’Tis the season for Christmas readings It was all smiles on Dec. 19 at the Boreal Discovery Centre, during the Night Before Christmas reading. A group of children sat and listened to the Christmas tale, and even got a chance to let Santa hear their Christmas wishes afterwards. Crisis centre receives Christmas donations

The Thompson Crisis Centre was given a $500 donation on Dec. 19, from Donna Wilson and Danny and Charmaine Morris.

Wilson says the money was from the silver collection at the old-fashioned Christmas concert, which was held on Dec. 15. “ I knew I wanted to donate $300 to the Thompson Crisis Centre, and Danny [Morris] asked, when he got offstage, if he could help out.” Morris donated $250 from Mystery Lake Autobody, along with tuques for all the children at the centre.

Kim Hickes, executive director for the crisis centre, says it is a holiday miracle. “I was nearly in tears when Donna called and said they would be donating $500.”

Hickes said they had just made the decision to not have stockings for the children, because the

They made 22 scarves. This initiative was inspired by the girls to show kindness in our community. The girls would also like to thank everyone who donated wool. We are very proud of their efforts! Unhappy with recommendation, council tables school zone bylaw

A proposal to limit the effective hours of the school zone in front of R.D. Parker Collegiate to 12 hours a day was sent back to the public safety committee by council on Dec. 15.

School speed zones were put in place in the summer following the passage of a bylaw. The zones, which are around all schools, are 30 kilometres an hour, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. This hasn’t sat well with the public, and because of that the City of

Thompson has set out to see if changes can be made.

On Oct. 28, the city released a survey to the public via the Internet to get residents’ opinions about the speed limit on Thompson Drive, in front of RDPC. Over 800 citizens filled out

the questionnaire and 92 per cent of respondents said they wanted changes.

This information was then passed to the public safety committee which made the recommendation to change the speed limit in front of RDPC to 30 kilometers per hour from 7

a.m .to 7 p.m. After 7 p.m it would be 50 kilometers per hour. These speed limits would be in effect 365 days a year.

Coun. Duncan Wong put forth a motion Dec. 15 to table the revamped bylaw.

“I think I would like to recommend this be tabled because the way it goes is not close to what the public would like to see. I would like to bring it back to the public safety committee and restructure the bylaw.” The motion was supported by all councillors except Coun. Dennis Foley and Coun. Blake Ellis, the public safety committee

chairperson.

“When I look at this, I think to myself if we’re going to reduce the hours, it’s not the hours, it’s the days. Why are we having a speed limit during times when school is not in session?” said deputy mayor Penny Byer. “I see no point in having the speed limit in July and August, having a speed limit there when no one is going back and forth to school.”

The public safety committee will take another look at the recommendation to change the bylaw.

The committee’s next meeting is Jan. 8.

Christmas in Canada, eh?

To the Editor: It’s coming close to Christmas, we’re putting up trees; buying gifts and hanging lights, talking about love and peace.

At this time of year, I am grateful for these efforts of great Canadians for giving us this land of plenty. People like Poundmaker John Diefenbaker, Samuel de Champlain, Tommy Douglas, Allan Blakeney, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Joseph Howe, Tecumseh and last but

certainly not least Brian Tobin. They were driven by their convictions, a trait of Canadians working for the common good.

Christmas isn’t just another religious extravaganza, it’s a time to celebrate all the good things God has given us; the people like us who live in the promised land, some call it Canada but I like to call it home.

Merry Christmas.

Out&About

Concert generates over $1,000 for local causes My heart is overjoyed with the generosity and kindness shown at the Old Fashioned Christmas Concert this year. This was our sixth annual and I heard from many that it just gets better every year.

I’m proud to have started this concert six years ago but can’t take credit for all the talent that walks across that stage. The Thompson Community Band kicked off the concert, followed by over 50 girl guides singing Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. We were lucky enough to have wellknown artist Jasyn Lucas sing us a tune followed by the talented dancers from Diamond Dance Academy. Tony Whalen, a former Thompson Idol, sang for us accompanied by his friend Jennifer Rolles on the accordion.

We had more beautiful dancers entertain us from Aurora Dance Academy.

Donna Wilson while a manger scene played out. Sarah Monias sang beautifully as did the Thompson Citizen’s very own Amy Caldwell.

Thompson Playhouse performed a short Christmas skit followed by an audience sing-a-long.

Santa arrived just on time thanks to Thompson Fire & Emergency Services and handed out candy canes to the children. Thompson’s tallest elf, Kevin Hopton, entertained the children between sets and had a great time dancing and

even convincing a lovely ballerina to join him on stage where he tried to teach her his moves. The concert started at 6:30 p.m. but by six o’clock there was a huge lineup of people waiting to get in who generously donated to our silver collection. NorMan Pet Rescue held a fundraising bake sale during intermission.

We were also able to help others in the community with a nice donation from Danny Morris bringing our total to $1,029. We were able to donate to the Thompson Crisis Centre, making 40 Christmas stockings. We bought gift cards for some Juniper Centre participants that deliver flyers through the cold winter months and we were able to help families in need and buy desserts for the community Christmas dinner. May your Christmas be surrounded with blessings of family, friends and love.

Former Snow Lakers abound at mining convention My Take on Snow Lake mjaxon@gillamnet.com Marc Jackson Walking the exhibition floor at the annual Manitoba Mining and Mineral Convention is just like old home week for a Snow Laker. A wide variety of people who have either lived here, or had extended visits, were around every corner, or in some cases working a booth on the convention centre’s massive exhibition floor.

This was indeed the case for several gents clustered on one of the central avenues of the floor looking to drum up interest in their “prospective” properties.

Dan Ziehlke, representing his company Strider Resources Ltd., was welcoming, conversational, and partaking in something he called “the miner’s breakfast” (a bag of popcorn from the kettle maker set up on the convention floor) when we happened upon him. Dan firmly believes – and he can back it up with the geology, prospecting and geochemical work – that he has another Nor-Acme type deposit on the east side of Wekusko.

Jim Parres was set up immediately to the left of Ziehlke and promoting his Jiminex Properties: Misehkow River near Pickle Lake; Northern Eagle near Hemlo; and the Parres and Parres Two near Osborne Lake.

He was also advancing the Nor-Acme Gold Mine and Headframes, Happiness, and Heartaches books, as well as a third “yet to be named” volume that he plans for the near future. Jimmy is always pleased to see old friends and happy to meet new ones... you just gotta watch out for that steel trap handshake of his!

To the immediate right of Strider Resources was Peter Dunlop of Peter C. Dunlop Mining Exploration/ W. Bruce Dunlop Limited. Peter, as with the previous two gents mentioned, is a tireless promoter of the Snow Lake mining camp. He had a large sample from the Moosehorn-Ballast property – originally staked in 1914 by R.A. Hazelwood and Hugh Vickers – on display at his booth, and spoke vividly of the lack of exploration work done on East Wekusko’s Rex/ Laguna property. He noted that there hasn’t been any serious work done on this once prom-

inent producer since the 1940s.

Over and across from these three was former Snow Lake resident, Ken (Pete) Klyne Jr. representing Klyne Exploration. He has an interesting property on Pemmican Island, located near the west shore at the north end of Lake Winnipegosis (said to contain up to 1.18 per cent Ni and 0.76 per cent Zn). Kenny, an old school chum, is gregarious and engaging as ever and advised that he is seriously considering taking a run at provincial politics. He is particularly concerned with what he says is the NDP’s infatuation with turning prime mineral property into parkland. He says that he will very likely run as an independent in the Flin Flon constituency under a pro-mining platform.

Also out and about and up for a chat was former Hudbay Snow Lake mines manager Mike Willett who is currently vice-president of mining and business development with Saskatoon-based March Consulting. Discussing that day’s signing of a declaration of priorities for the development of a resource revenuesharing mechanism with aboriginal communities, Willett noted that it was a crucial step for the Manitoba mining industry.

Neill Brandson, who is a field support manager at Manitoba Geological Survey (MGS), was keen to discuss the community and amenities of Snow Lake. He has visited it on numerous occasions throughout his long history with MGS and feels that the Snow Lake Mining Museum is something that not just Snow Lakers, but all people associated with the industry in Manitoba should be proud of.

“You have a real treasure there,” he said.

Another Manitoba Mineral Resources employee who is mightily impressed with Snow Lake is Dale Wride who is a claims inspector stationed in Flin Flon with the Mining Recording Section. He mentioned the community and his affinity for it several times during the convention.

Locally owned café to make comeback

Two come from away Thompsonites have decided to really make Thompson their home by buying the old Northern Flavours business and opening their own café called Northern Delights.

James Lee, originally from Vancouver, moved to Thompson in the summer of 2008 to start working for Vale. Lee heard about the business being for sale and decided to buy it.

Owning a business is in his blood, Lee says. “My aunt and uncle own and run a coffee shop in Vancouver.

Business is kind of in the family, so I guess I am the next generation of business owners.”

Working for Vale fulltime means Lee will need someone to run the café for him, and Courtney Carswell is just the person. “James called and said ‘The Northern Flavours business is for sale and I’m buying it, will you run it?’ and right away I said yes, sure.” Says Carswell.

Lee says Carswell was the person for the job because they work well together. “Courtney and I have worked together on other projects in the past.

A lot of people forget that in business personal relationships and trusting your partner are two of the most important things needed.

I know Courtney has the skill, I know she is capable of doing this.”

Originally from Ontario, Carswell moved to Thompson with her partner in 2010 so he could begin working for Vale. Not finding a teaching job like she hoped, Carswell said this café became the perfect thing. “It was a great opportunity. I love to cook and I love to bake. It just really lined up well with what was going on with me at the time.”

Carswell hopes this café can be a place where people can be comfortable in, meet people, and even take someone on a quiet date.

Lee feels the same way.

“I think a lot of people miss that sort of atmosphere that a coffee shop can bring.

This is a dedicated place where people can come relax and have a coffee.

In general there is nothing in town that can provide that sober atmosphere, and close-knit feel. We want this to feel like a lounge. ” The café will focus on fresh food, with a hint of sugary sweets. “We don’t have a deep fryer and have no intentions on getting one. We will have sandwiches with lean meats, homemade pulled pork sandwiches, and nice vegetarian option with homemade humus. We have 20 different types of cookies

we’re rotating, brownies, and different bars” The price range is on par with other businesses Carswell says. “You can expect to get a sandwich, a soup, a small dessert and a drink for $15. We’re on par and it’s real, and it’s made by a person.”

Lee says prices even could go down depending on future business. “It’s one of those things where we’re basically starting out scratch. It’s all homemade food made from scratch, so it’s real food, which is part of the reason it’s more. But we’ve been working on getting our prices lower, so in the future we get it down.”

On top of the new café, the pair also run a catering business. Since the end of summer they’ve been learning the ropes, and Carswell says they’ve re-

ceived good feedback.

“We’ve got the menu on our Facebook group, on our website, our email is there as well as an order form for an estimate of cost.” Lee wants to bring a healthy alternative to Thompson.

“If you look back and look at what Northern Flavours used to be, in 2004, they started the whole idea of café and catering. I wanted to bring it back to that idea where it isn’t just a coffee shop, and we’re going to bring a healthy alternative to business meetings.”

Carswell says hours will be limited when the business opens. “We’re doing a soft lunch open to start. We’ll be doing a 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with some special events on weekends. The second Saturday of every month we will offer board games for people to play. We’re

thinking of every fourth Saturday just having people come in and bring their instruments.”

Carswell can’t wait to open the doors. “We’ve done a lot of work; painting, new chairs, a fireplace. We’ve gotten good feedback about the catering, and our menu.

I’m excited to share it with the community.”

And Lee feels the exact same way. “It’s excitement and relief. The amount of work, time and effort we’ve put into it has really changed the look of it. Relief that the waiting is over, and excitement because we’ve waited, and we’re finally getting our foot forward.

I really hope the community supports us.”

The opening date for Northern Delights is not yet set.

United Steelworkers donate Christmas presents through toy drive

The United Steelworkers Local 6166, and the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) came together to donate toys to the Thompson Crisis Centre this Christmas.

On Dec. 22, Earl Timmons, co-chair of SOAR and Murray Nychyporuk, president of USW Local 6166, dropped off gifts from their annual Christmas toy drive. This is the second year the donations have gone to the Thompson Crisis Centre.

Kim Hickes, executive director of the centre says these gifts are very much needed. “We’re really really busy this year, we have a lot of people, families, and children, so we’re so thankful for these presents.”

Same old, same old in rental market survey

There’s good news and bad news when it comes to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) rental market report for Thompson based on data collected in October.

The good news is that the vacancy rate was not much worse than it was one year previously.

The bad news is that it wasn’t any better.

The vacancy rate for Thompson was 1.7 per cent for private structures with three or more apartments in October of this year, better than Brandon’s 0.9 per cent but lower than the vacancy rates in Winnipeg, Steinbach, Winkler and Portage la Prairie, which was tops with a vacancy rate of 5.5 per cent. That was almost the same as in 2013, when it was 1.8 per cent.

The vacancy rate for two-bedroom apartments nudged up to 1.7 per cent from 1.6 per cent in 2013, while for one-bedroom apartments it was 1.9 per cent, down from 2.3 per cent a year earlier. CMHC reported the vacancy rate for bachelor apartments unchanged from 2013 at zero per cent. That was the same as the rate given for three-bedroom and larger apartments this year. There was no data for that category in 2013.

The average monthly rent of bachelor apartments dropped from $676 in 2013 to $652 last October, while the average rent for a onebedroom apartment rose from $748 in 2013 t0 $763 this year. Two-bedroom apartment rent rose

to an average of $841 per month from $836 the previous year, while three-bedroom apartment rents were up from an average of $871 per month in 2013 to $957 in 2014, an increase of 4.5 per cent. Overall, the average rent for all types of apartments rose from $797 in 2013 to $808 in 2014.

CMHC said there were 30 bachelor apartments, 478 one-bedroom apartments, 778 two-bedrooms and 15 three-bedroom or larger apartments in Thompson in 2014, for a total of 1,301 units. The agency counted 1,264 units in October 2013.

CMHC conducts rental market surveys every April and October that target privately initiated buildings with at least three rental units that have been on the market for at least three months. The surveys are conducted in the first two weeks of the month and include a combination of telephone interviews and site visits, with information obtained from owners, managers or building superintendents.

The agency also conducts secondary rental market surveys in September and October to estimate the strength of the rental market for rental dwellings not included in the regular rental market survey, such as single detached homes, semi-detached (double) homes, freehold row and townhouses, duplex apartments, apartments within other dwelling types or commercial and other buildings, as well as rented condominiums.

Thompson kid reporter contestant goes viral

Ethan Meilleur may seem like a normal 12-year-old boy to anyone on the street, but the Westwood Elementary School student recently went viral after entering a contest put on by the Winnipeg Jets.

The contest was for children between five and 12 who filmed vidoes explaining why they should be the next Winnipeg Jets kid reporter. The contest winner received a personalized jersey, the opportunity to watch a Jets game in the press box, and the chance to meet

Ethan’s mother Danica Meilleur found out about the contest through a friend. “Someone actually messaged me on Facebook and showed me the link. They said I should get Ethan to enter this contest. The day that I got that message, the next day we shot the video. I didn’t want to miss out on this, it’s so cool.”

Ethan had his 12th birthday during the competition, and received the best present ever that night, his mother says.

“On his birthday before he went to sleep, he went to first place. He went from seventh place to first place, with like 5,000 votes.”

Voting took place from Dec. 1 until Dec. 12. Once voting finished, the five highest vote-getters won a prize, and Ethan was one of those. “It felt amazing knowing so many people wanted me to win,” said Ethan, who got over 6,900 votes. Of the 90 children who uploaded a video, Ethan received the second-highest number of

votes.

Meilleur says she was so proud of her son, and the whole city of Thompson for supporting him.

“I would go uptown and I would get stopped by people who I had no idea who they were, and they’d ask if it was my son doing the contest. People would tell me they were voting for him every day.”

The left winger says he feels more confident while on the ice. Ethan plays hockey at least five times a week, says his mom, and is on the ice for power skating, house league hockey, and also for the peewee A Thompson King Miners.

Ethan says his dad got him into hockey, which quickly became his favourite sport, and his career of choice. “I’d like to play for the Winnipeg Jets, and win the Stanley Cup. It would be funny if that happened and they showed this video from when I was a kid.” His mom says Ethan has no other career goals. “He doesn’t have a backup plan as of yet. It’s just to

play for the NHL.” The Meilleur family redid their basement into a Winnipeg Jets-themed hockey rink equipped with real hockey boards, a penalty box and Jets carpeting. This is where the hockey player goes to practise off the ice, which usually involves some mini sticks. Meilleur says it’s because of her husband Mike Meilleur that the Jets have taken over their lives. “Mike was a huge Jets fan his whole life. When they left, he was crushed. As soon as they announced they were coming back he knew it was his team, which quickly became all of our team.”

A panel of judges picked the winner for the Jets contest, and unfortunately Ethan didn’t pull through and win. The young Thompson resident’s video was shared all over the world, though. “We’ve had votes from all over the world. It was shared in Hong Kong, Mexico, we had votes from all over the United States,

all over Canada, in Newfoundland, Alberta, B.C., Churchill and it was shared all over,” said his mother, admitting it felt surreal having so many people know her son’s name. “It’s neat to know people from all over the world were sharing it, talking about him, and wanting him to win.”

As one of the top five, Ethan received a prize package. “I won $50 worth of Winnipeg Jets gear in a gift card and two tickets to the skill competition.” The family was not able to attend the competition due to distance, but gave the tickets away to family who did get to enjoy the event.

Meilleur says the contest gave her son a splash of confidence, though it took 100 takes to film the video. “It’s amazing.

He’s a little bit shy, and this brings him out. Just doing the video and getting it out there, it’s done so much for him.”

And as for Ethan, “there’s always nextyear,” he says.

Trojans hit the court in southern basketball tournaments

R.D. Parker Collegiate’s varsity girls’ basketball team finished ninth overall as the consolation side winners at the Pembina Trails Classic AAAA basketball tournament at Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg Dec. 11-13.

The AAA Trojan girls dropped their first game of the tournament 58-47 to Miles Macdonell Collegiate who went on to finish fifth overall. RDPC then won their next three games, defeating the Dakota Lancers 59-

32 and the Lord Selkirk Royals 71-48, then finishing with a 67-35 win over the Kildonan East Reivers.

RDPC’s Adrianna Proulx was named a second team all-star at the tournament.

The varsity boys’ basketball team was in action the same weekend, competing at the Brandon Sun Spartan Invitational tournament at Neelin High School in Brandon, where they finished 0-3 in the round robin, losing 5775 to the Garden Valley Zodiacs, 42-77 to the

Crocus Plains Plainsmen and 42-79 to Lloydminster Comprehensive High School from Alberta.

The boys picked up a win in the Tri-Star Screenprinting playoffs on Dec. 13, defeating the junior varsity Neelin Spartans 58-37, with Querwin Camcino leading the Trojans with 20 points. RDPC ended the tournament with a 67-30 loss to the Hapnot Collegiate Institute Kopper Kings from Flin Flon. Camcino was the Trojans’ leading scorer again with 19 points in that game.

Goaltender Connor Faulkner made 28 saves for his first win as a Norman Northstars and Bryce Horning scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as Christmas came early for the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League team in the form of a 3-2 win over the Kenora Thistles on Dec. 20.

The win – the Northstars’ fourth this year and the first in regulation time at home – marked the second time this season that the Northstars have beaten the Thistles. Norman’s second win of the season was a 4-3 win over Kenora on the road on Oct. 23.

The Thistles got on the scoreboard first in the contest as Daniel Nault scored from a crowd in front of Faulkner with about seven minutes left in the first period. That lead stood up until Horning poked a puck in the crease over the goal line early in the

second period after Thistles netminder Brock Aiken couldn’t squeeze the point shot by Brandon McKay between his pads with the Northstars on a power play.

Daylon Campbel gave the Northstars their first lead with 6:18 left in the second when he beat Aiken with the teams four-on-four.

Horning’s second came just 14 seconds later when he roofed the puck with the Northstars on a four-onthree power play.

Adam Withers cut the Northstars lead to one with a power play goal early in the third period, but Faulkner held the fort the rest of the way.

Shots in the game were 35-30 in favour of the Northstars.

Michael Markus had the only Northstars goal in the second game of the weekend series Dec. 21, notching a power play marker assisted by Horning just 2:36 into the first period for a 1-0 lead. The scoring

was all Kenora from that point onwards, as Jake Tresoor and Brandon Stanley scored power play goals in the first period to give the Thistles the lead.

Kenora got even-strength markers from Turner Santin and Ben Hendricksen in the second period and Stanley added his second of the game just 35 seconds into the final frame for a 5-1 Kenora victory.

The Northstars are off until Jan. 10-11 when they host the Winnipeg Wild in Thompson but past members of the team will be on the ice this Saturday for a Northstars alumni game to mark coach Doug Korman’s 20th year of service to the club. Admission to the 7 p.m. game at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena is free, with a silver collection going towards the Wall of Fame project. The Norman Wild wrapped up the 2014 portion of the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League (MFMHL) season by beating the visiting Yellowhead Chiefs 3-2 in a shootout in The Pas Dec. 19, before dropping a pair of one-goal games on Saturday and Sunday.

Thompson’s Kendra Hanson scored from just inside the blueline to even the score at one apiece before the first intermission on Friday after the Chiefs opened the scoring. Yellowhead took the lead again in the third period but Christine Sheppard of The Pas relpied for the Wild just 10 seconds after.

Hanson was named the MFMHL player of the week for the week ending Dec. 14 after scoring four goals to lead the Wild to a 6-1 win over the Eastman Selects. The Grade 12 student at R.D. Parker Collegiate is third in league scoring with 15 goals and six assists for 21 points in 23 games.

Year one results of Memorial University wolf survey released

Nearly 65 per cent of Thompson residents who filled out the Memorial University (MUN) wolf research survey say they like wolves, with only 3.9 per cent of respondents saying they don’t.

Alistair Bath, an associate professor in the Department of Geography who teaches human dimensions at the Newfoundland university, spoke to the Thompson Chamber of Commerce on Dec.10. Bath’s graduate student Bonnie Bishop was in Thompson last summer to distribute the survey and to collect data on wolves. Bath says about 30 per cent of respondents stayed neutral throughout the survey. “If you’ve got about a third of people neutral, what you’re interested in is what will cause that neutral group to switch.

If they go to support something, what are the triggers, or what are the triggers for them not to support something?”

Bishop used the Thompson telephone directory to randomly select residents to take part in the study.

A total of 502 surveys were handed out with 389 being returned. That gave the researchers a 77 per cent response rate, which they were pleased with.

Spirit Way Inc. took the lead on this study and has partnered with MUN for a two-year research study because they identified human dimensions as a key research area. Bath says he was very interested in coming to Thompson. “Typically places don’t want to coexist with wolves. What makes Thompson really unique

and what I think sparked my interest is, all around the world I’ve worked on projects like this and I’ve never had a community say, ‘It would be really cool to advertise ourselves as the wolf capital of the world. It’s a connection where wolves and people can coexist.’ That is really unique.”

The International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota which Spirit Way has connected with has had two representatives - Dr. David Mech, founding director and top wolf biologist, and Rob Schultz, director, – visit Thompson and speak about the city becoming the wolf capital of the world.

In the survey, there were 101 items being researched. “We covered things like attitudes towards wolves, existence values, generation values, fear, how does fear relate to attitudes. We wanted to explore perception of risk.

How likely certain events are like seeing a wolf or being attacked by a wolf.

We wanted to explore management options, like should you kill a wolf under certain circumstances. We asked about knowledge levels and beliefs, and behaviours. We asked about creditability and trust,” said Bath.

The survey asked for the public’s opinion on whether Thompson should become the wolf capital of the world. There were split opinions. One respondent said, “It’s a million times better than being the crime capital,” while another replied, “There are many more wolves in the exclusion area of Chernobyl than all of the Thompson area and surrounding. So why is

In fact, Bath says 84 per cent of respondents did indicate that they’ve seen a wolf in the wild. The survey also asked if residents felt fear because of the animal. Over 83 per cent of respondents said they do not fear wolves, which Bath says is unique.

Two of the most important questions in the study were if people wanted Thompson to become the wolf capital of the world, and if residents wanted a wolf exhibit in the city.

Just over 53 per cent of

people say they would be proud to live in a city, which was called the wolf capital of the world, while 10.9 percent say they would not be proud.

In addition, 68.6 percent of respondents said becoming the wolf capital of the world would benefit Thompson, while only 8.9 percent disagreed. Just under 69 per cent of survey respondents said they would visit a wolf exhibit, with only 13.3 percent saying they would not.

Lastly, the survey asked respondents out of four groups, who they would believe most when wolf information is given out.

Bath says this was important to know because the message needs to come from the right messenger to get the residents

on board.

Manitoba Conservation came in first place with 38.4 percent believing everything they say and 43.9 per cent saying they believe most. Then it was Parks Canada with 40.1 per cent saying they believe most, and 35.4 per cent of people saying they believe everything.

Thirty-two-and-a-half per cent of people believe most of what Spirit Way says, and 16.1 percent believe everything. The past Thompson city council came in last place with 8.7 believing most of what the council said, and only 5.2 percent of people believing everything.

“This is just the first cut on how the community feels about things.

We have to look at where

we want to take this next summer when Bonnie [Bishop] comes back,” Bath said, adding that he hopes to get more information about how the First Nations community feels. “There’s support from the First Nation community for the initiative, but it’s a slightly less support than the non-aboriginal group.”

Future research will include how the youth feel and tourists. Since the questionnaire used the telephone directory, Bath says they lost out on a lot of youth responses since primarily it is 19- to 25-yearolds that only have cell phones. Bishop will return in June and July to start year two of the research.

Thompson Community Foundation accepting 2015 grant applications

Grant applications are now available for the 2015 from the Thompson Community Foundation (TCF) fund, Liz Sousa, present of TCF, told the Thompson Chamber of CommerceDec. 17.

“We are a non-profit, and a registered charity, and we raise money continuously, and all the money gets put in an endowment fund, and we just spent the interest on worthwhile community projects,’ said Sousa.

The foundation was established in 1995 To apply for a grant from TCF and receive the money, an organization must be approved by the Canadian Revenue Agency and have a charitable number. Sousa says it’s possible for organizations to borrow another organization’s number. “Some organizations we have given to, although they don’t have a charitable number, they will apply under someone else’s with a mutual agreement between the two parties. We only give to groups. Unfortunately, our bylaws prohibit us from giving to individuals.”

To date TCF has granted $823,509.22 to Thompson organizations and causes. In 2014, there were 14 applications approved. Some of the recipients included La Voie du Nord Ecole communautaire, the Community Futures Rotary Park Association, YWCA, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Men are Part

of the Solutions (MAPS), the Thompson Public Library, the Thompson Homeless Shelter and Spirit Way Inc. Along with the grants, TCF also has a memorial Christmas tree set up at the City Centre Mall. Donations made will give a resident a card with a loved one’s name on it, and can be then hung on the tree. “If no one [from TCF] is there at the mall, you can go to KB Insurance and they will take your donation, and write on a card and put it on the tree right then,” says Dave Moore, grant chair.

Sousa says the tree raises anywhere between $700 to $1,200 every year.

Recently, Sousa said, the TCF has reached the $1.5 million mark, which is a huge milestone. “It took us 12 years to reach the $1 million mark, and we worked strictly on volunteers. Since we reached the $1 million mark we were able to hire Tammy Cober half-time, and in the last five years we’re up to $1.5 million. It’s starting to grow.” Sousa said the foundation needs to reach the $5 million mark to really start seeing the benefits. Once that level is reached, TCF will be able to give more money away.

This year, Sousa said, they started to concentrate on advertising the foundation more. “We just started an ad hoc committee for advertising and fundraising. We realize that is one of our target areas and priorities going forward. We have a group of people on there,

and we are always looking for volunteers to find ways to advertise and get the word out.”

This year in its grant application, TCF is asking applicants to fill out as much information as possible. The more information an organization gives, the more likely they will receive the funds. “We are now accepting the applications for the 2015 grant cycle.

Applications can be accepted from non-profit organizations in Thompson. Grants are awarded in June of 2015 to worthwhile community projects to be completed before

Dec. 1 of 2015,” said Moore.

Moore says the amount of money given depends on how many people apply, how much they apply for, and if the project would go forward with or without the TCF helping. Criteria for the non-profit organizations hoping to receive the funds are included in the application package.
