Change can be stressful at times, especially when we find ourselves peering at a possible future that gives no certainty making us watch our income deplete with the cost of grocery bills. Most of us despite various income levels have been tighter financially through current inflation, but that shouldn’t cause us to fear when we see the extended hand of the community fighting along side our personal struggles helping to maintain steady living.

Snow plow update set in motion

We Northerners are certainly no stranger to the steady fall of snow that can cover the streets within even minutes of time, having the city snow plows running constantly throughout the whole winter season. Even though it might be difficult to keep up with the safe clearing of every side road in the city a lot of residents question neglect to certain roads in fear of their safe travels.

On December 11th the Motion for updating the snow clearing was passed from clearing at 20 cm (7.8 inch) to 10 cm (3.9 inch) making a specified list of required roads top priority more often as snow continues to fall.

Former Counselor Ron Matechuk has expressed his favor on the update in the last couple Counsel Meetings as he feels letting the snow build up to 20 cm poses as a greater

hazard and is harder on plowing equipment.

“A couple reasons why it should be 10 cm rather then 20, first of all the machines will be working a lot easier” States Matechuk, further explaining how nearing that hight is when snow drifts begin to pull vehicles into the ditch and curbs start being taken out with the lack of visibility and the horsepower these big machines have, ripping chunks out of the sidewalks with ease.

Matechuk has stood as a Thompsonite for 59 years, and with the vast changes he’s seen over that span of time motivated him to run for Mayor four times in 2006, 2010, 2018 and finally in 2020, resulting unsuccessfully. As he stated in an interview given during his 2020 campaign; “I’ve been on council before, I know the battles that take place. I believe I see what’s wrong with everything in city council but it’s very tough to

solve these problems. It’s not written in stone but its close. I think, like a lot of people in this community, that change is needed and in the last general we didn’t see it” Says Matechuk referring greatly to the city’s overspending “It’s way out of hand, It’s a spend-happy council right now.”

Living on 20 Ash Street surrounded by many of the policy’s priority roads Matechuk feels as though neglect pushes the boundaries beyond 20 cm as he shares his struggle in traveling from his home and within the city. Matechuk feels as though updating the policy will ensure a safer level of snow on the priority roads.

With increasing the snow plow activity, this requires more workers more machines, and more maintenance. Though this may open new jobs, workers have proven to become more scarce among all of Thompson businesses, and if extra workers are not found for the increase of shift work it could result in greater neglect on roads not marked as priority.

“The whole policy is already in place, if you want to make a change, then make the right change, not by just adding one street name to the (Priority) map and paint the color to green” Says Councillor Wong, “I know we want to change things somehow in some spots, but I don’t think we want to make changes only a little bit only. My intention is to make it work for everyone to travel easy”.

Says Wong, referring to the neglect certain areas will undergo as some areas raise in priority.

After coming to a vote, the motion was set forth with the current policy reading that It shall be the normal practice of the City of Thompson Public Works Department to remove snow and ice from City streets and sidewalks in the event of a heavy snowfall, or when the accumulation of snow or ice poses a hazard to vehicular or pedestrian traffic.

Every effort shall be made to clear all streets and sidewalks at least once during a four to five working day period in conclusion of a snowstorm and carried out as defined in the following priorities. In the event of a heavy snowfall existing of 10 cm or more within a 24 hr period.

With the hourly rotation beginning with the priority roads marked as red; Thompson Drive,

Princeton Drive, Westwood Drive, Cree Road and the access points for Schools, R.C.M.P., Fire Hall and the General Hospital. Shortening ice road seasons threat to safety for northern Manitoba First Nation: NDP MP Niki Ashton

The federal Liberals are leaving a Manitoba First Nation in danger and suffering, as shorter ice road seasons lead to isolation and “inhumane” conditions, a northern Manitoba MP says.

“It's time for the feds to act for Wasagamack,” Churchill-Keewatinook Aski MP Niki Ashton said at a media conference in Ottawa where she was joined by the chief and council of the Wasagamack First Nation on Thursday.

“Prime Minister Trudeau got elected on a promise of reconciliation, and we are not seeing that in action.”

Ashton said she and members of the Wasagamack band council believe climate change is to blame for increasingly erratic weather patterns and for warmer than average temperatures this fall in Manitoba, and the federal government must step in to help the community get an airport, something she said they have been requesting for “decades.”

“As a result of the impacts of climate change we must act now,” Ashton said.

“This is having devastating impacts to people’s health for those needing urgent medical care.

“Indigenous Services Canada, you need to step up and work with Wasagamack and with all partners to build an airport, and create all-weather access.”

Wasagamack, a community about 500 kilo-

metres north of Winnipeg, continues to be one of the most isolated communities in Manitoba and in Canada, as it has no airport and no all-season road, and is only accessible via seasonal ice road.

As temperatures across the province continue to sit well above average for this time of year, Wasagamack First Nation Chief Walter Harper told reporters Thursday those temperatures have kept the ice road into his community shuttered.

That closure will have both short and long-term negative effects on the community, he said, as they struggle to acquire basic goods and to get residents who need medical or emergency care out.

“Normally we would have been driving already, but right now we can’t do anything,” Harper said. “We only have a certain window for transporting goods, and because there has been no snow and no cold, we are looking at a very short window of delivering goods this year.

Ashton added the road closure is “devastating” for those seeking medical care, including the elderly.

“As a result of the lack of an airport, people have to rely on inhumane conditions to get to medical care.

People rely on boats, and helicopters that can't always fly to get to an airport,” Ashton said.

“When you’re in that situation, those costly minutes and in some cases hours can mean life or death.”

Having no airport also makes it dangerous to live in the community when natural or man-made disasters strike, because of how difficult it can be to pull off an evacuation, Ashton said.

In August of 2017, Wasagamack was evacuated by boat due to wildfire. Once they reached the airport in St. Theresa Point they were flown to Winnipeg, Brandon or Thompson.

Ashton said the conditions of that evacuation were “inhumane.”

“We’ve heard what it was like to be evacuated in the middle of the night by boat because of wildfires closing in,” she said. “This is the lived experience of the people of Wasagamack, and we know with climate change it’s only going to get worse.”

Chief Harper said he also has a personal reason to build an airport as his mother, Bernadette Harper, died on April 23, 1998 when a helicopter taking people to a funeral crashed shortly after takeoff, killing his mother and one other.

“With the fact that this precarious situation led to the death of Chief Harper’s mother, this is heartbreaking,” Ashton said.

Living legacy honored by the city

At times we can get lost in a vast population.

Whether we live in a massive city or local town sometimes we wonder what mark we can make just being one person in a whole community. Sometimes we get lost living in

the here and now, when as times passes us by we look back and see a legacy left behind.

Rewarded to one such living legend of Thompson is Rob Trainor who was presented a plaque dedicated to the past 50 years of service he has invested into the community, reflecting a legacy a number of us have

unknowingly relied on.

Together with his wife Joyce, the venture began in the industry of ice cream, selling Dickie Dee to the satisfactory of gathered sweet cravings. This venture quickly widespread his familiar reputation, that even once the ice cream shop closed down it made revenue for what

Premier Wab Kinew announced the creation of the council to the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce while delivering his inaugural State of the Province address on December 7.

Time eventually moved Trainor to new revenues, finally stretching beyond Ice Cream and Counsel but then into serving as a Security Guard at the Thompson Regional Airport, glowing his versatile skills an ensuring his efforts were

being put to best use.

If any spare time was left in his long days, his evenings often consisted of volunteering time to Operation Red Nose which operates from 9PM to 2AM, giving drunk drivers a safe drive home or to their destination.

Trainor also dedicated an immense amount of his off hours to the Baptist Church on Beaver Crescent, helping them plan or coordinate future events and leading a hand wherever needed.

With such sacrifices taken by one remarkable individual, the Thompson City Counsel on December 6th ensured Proper honor was bestowed in tribute.

Only our highest thanks is due this man for living a life for only the lives around us, showing us the prime example of a citizen that upholds a community.

Group calls for highway safety two years after Manitoba MLA killed in crash

Two years after a crash on a remote stretch of highway took the life of a Manitoba MLA and mother to two young children, a group says they are continuing to fight to see improvements made to the highway, and believe that if changes aren’t made it could lead to another tragic incident like the death of Danielle Adams.

Last Friday marked two years since 38-year-old Adams was killed near the community of Ponton while travelling from Thompson to Winnipeg on Highway 6, a road that connects northern and southern Manitoba, and one that is well-travelled by those driving between Thompson and Winnipeg.

Adams, MLA for Thompson at the time, was driving south on the highway on Dec. 9, 2021 in a SUV when she collided head-on with a semi-truck heading north.

The collision left Adams dead, and left behind her husband and two young children just weeks before Christmas.

In a video message posted online on Friday, Premier Wab Kinew paid tribute to Adams, and to what he said will be her ongoing legacy in Manitoba, and in

the north.

Adams was elected in 2019 as the first female elected to represent the constituency of Thompson, and she served as the party's critic for child care, housing, disability and poverty.

“Danielle Adams was a big part of our team and she helped to make us who we are today,” Kinew said.

“While we’re starting to implement the things that she wanted us to do together, I wanted to say that even though she is not here in person, Danielle is still a big part of this thing.”

Volker Beckmann of Thompson is one of a group of Manitobans who have been calling themselves #SaferHighway6, which has been advocating since Adams’ death for improvements to the highway.

Beckmann says he also personally felt the shock of Adams’ sudden death, because he is a ski instructor and taught Adams when she was a teenager.

“I’ve known her since she was a teenager,” he said. “And sadly the last time I saw Danielle was at a Christmas parade just before she died, and she told me she was going to enroll one of her kids for skiing lessons with me, and that was the last conversation I ever had with her.”

According to Beckmann, one of the biggest issues

with Highway 6 north of Thompson is the number of large semi-trailer trucks that travel up and down the approximately 760 kilometre stretch between Winnipeg and Thompson, and how dangerous that can be for drivers in snowy and wintry conditions.

“If it’s snowing or if there is snow on the road, every time you come behind a semi or you see one coming straight towards you, there is a billowing snow, and it just becomes a temporary whiteout, and that is what happened to Danielle,” Beckmann said.

Soon after Adams’ death, the #SaferHighway6 group released a specific list of what they believed needed to be changed along Highway 6 to keep it safe, and to avoid collisions and more tragedy.

Those improvements must include, according to the group, passing lanes every 50 kilometres, rumble strips at key locations, faster response times for major highway accidents, shoulders wide enough for drivers to park off the road safely, and more and improved rest stops.

“For people in the north it’s not uncommon to drive sometimes seven or eight hours in one trip on that highway, so it’s already a stressful drive, and then there’s the extra stress be-

An increasing number of Canadians recognize the harms and trauma residential schools inflicted on generations of Indigenous people, according to a new study but some experts say along with that a disturbing trend of residential school denialism also continues to grow.

“We cannot discount or deny the dangerous rise in denialism in both mainstream and online media,” National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) executive director Stephanie Scott said in a Wednesday media release. This is why our work is so crucial; we are amplifying the voices of residential school Survivors.

“Their truths must be heard.”

Scott’s comments come in reaction to the release of the second national Canadian Reconciliation Barometer, a study conducted by a group of researchers from Canadian universities investigating public perceptions of progress towards reconciliation with Indigenous people in Canada.

The report shows awareness of the history of residential schools has increased in Canada since 2021, and increased significantly among non-Indigenous people, as 90% of non-Indigenous respondents said they had previously read or heard about residential schools, up from just 65% in 2021.

Awareness about residential schools has also grown among Indigenous people in Canada up from 87% of respondents in 2021, to 94%.

The study also shows other important measures of reconciliation have not improved or improved “only slightly,” including the number of non-Indigenous people engaging with Indigenous people, and spending time in Indigenous communities.

“We are still far apart on a lot of issues and progress is slow in many areas,” the report states. “For example, non-Indigenous people are not yet taking that next step in reconciliation, such as getting to know Indigenous communities in their area, taking in Indigenous cultural events and trying to learn more.”

The study also shows that since 2021, non-Indigenous respondents reported a better understanding of the harm government policies have caused to Indigenous peoples, as 66% of non-Indigenous respondents agreed that governments in Canada have harmed Indigenous peoples “intentionally, systematically, and for a long time,” up from 57% in 2021.

Ry Moran, a team member on the study, and an associate university librarian, reconciliation, at the University of Victoria, said he believes education about residential schools must be implemented in schools, and in all areas of society for reconciliation efforts and perceptions to improve.

“Awareness is the start of the journey,” Moran said.

“It helps open the door for further learning and paves the way for deeper and more meaningful engagement with the historical and contemporary realities faced by Indigenous peoples.

“We need to be cautious that we don’t rush into thinking we are further ahead than we are.”

“At the moment we’re just being patient with the new government, because we know they are going through a lot of stuff and a lot of requests right now, but we intend to continue pushing for this, and we are hopeful they will be receptive to these concerns,” Beckmann said.

During the recent provincial election campaign Kinew and the NDP did promise to invest money into roads and highways in northern Manitoba, saying they planned to support funding for road improvements for Highway 6, as well as for several other roads including Provincial Roads 280, 374 and 391, but no official announcements about any of those roads has Wednesday, March 21, 2018 been made since they took power.

Louis Riel Act receives royal assent

Future students in Manitoba will learn about the history of Louis Riel and his role as the province’s first premier after the Louis Riel Act received Royal Assent and became law on Friday, David Chartrand, president of the National Government of the Red River Métis, said.

The Act, Chartrand said, is the result of over three decades of advocacy and public education work by him and other ministers of the Manitoba Métis Fed-

eration. It sets to rights a 153-year-old injustice by declaring Louis Riel as the first premier of Manitoba, he said. It also requires the Manitoba education curriculum to include the significant contributions of Riel.

“We’re trying to correct this historical wrong that includes not only implications towards (Riel), our first premier, but implications against our Nation as a people, and how society looks at us differently because they adopted the ideology that Riel was a traitor and a madman,”

Chartrand told the Sun. Riel was born in 1844 and formed a militia, taking possession of Upper Fort Garry and beginning the Red River Resistance in 1869, the Manitoba government website says.

During the winter of 1869-70, Riel formed a provisional government and presented a Bill of Rights to Canada, which went on to become the Manitoba Act on May 12, 1870. Riel’s government approved it on June 24, and the Act came into effect on July 15.

denied his seat on three separate occasions. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1874 for executing an agitator in 1870, the website said.

Riel received amnesty on the condition that he remain in exile for five years, and after being defeated in the North-West Rebellion at Batoche in May 1885, was found guilty of high treason and hanged in Regina on Nov. 16, 1885.

Chartrand, along with Red River Métis citizens, staff and MMF cabinet members, were at the Manitoba Legislative Building yesterday to witness the moment the Act received Royal Assent.

“It’s almost hard to believe that all the years of struggle and advocacy could end with a single gesture by our lieutenant governor, Anita Neville,” Chartrand said. “This makes our Nation’s dreams come true, and instils a huge sense of pride in our citizens.”

After the Act was passed into law, Chartrand was presented with a copy of

the Act signed by Premier Wab Kinew and the Red River Métis Members of the Legislative Assembly who helped usher in the legislation. The first signed copy will be taken to Riel’s gravesite, and the second will be framed and put on display in the MMF’s heritage centre, so future generations of Red River Métis people will be able to see an understand the battle for Riel’s recognition, Chartrand said.

“I commend Premier Kinew and his team for joining us in this long battle, walking alongside us for the last few years as we worked to achieve this vision.”

The MMF will continue to work with the province to see that an oil painting of Riel, similar to the paintings of other premiers, will be installed to further inspire Red River Métis citizens, Manitobans and Canadians.

The next step for the MMF will be to ensure that Canadians are educated about the contribution of Louis Riel as a father of Confederation, Chartrand

said.

“Without doubt, he is looking down on us and seeing that his courage, bravery and sacrifice were not in vain.”

Chartrand is also excited about the portion of the Act that involves education.

“All children in Manitoba and Canada will now learn about Louis Riel the hero, the visionary, the founder of Manitoba and a father of Canada’s confederation,” he said. “It’s a proud day to be Red River Métis.”

Adrienne Carriere, the director of the MMF’s Infinity Women Secretariat, agreed with Chartrand’s sentiments.

“It’s been an exciting couple of weeks with the MFF,” she said.

The granting of Royal Assent to the Louis Riel Act was part of the Kinew government’s end to the fall sitting of its first legislative session, with the passage of three bills focused on reconciliation and cutting fuel taxes. The session will resume with the spring sitting on March 7.

“We heard from three family members about the importance and the significance of this work that’s being done by the families — work that’s been started by the families and has been propelled forward,” Carriere told the Sun. “It was an extremely beautiful ceremony.”

The licence plates will be a powerful stimulus for grassroots education and efforts to prevent the issue of MMIWG2S and is very significant for families who have been affected, she said.

“It’s an epidemic, and its been an epidemic for a long

time, so this is another step in that process to continue to advocate and hopefully, at some point, not have to have these kinds of things.”

Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith said she introduced the bill to create the licence plates on behalf of MMIWG2S families as it is very close to her heart and has impacted her own family.

“We wanted to make sure other Manitobans recognized the significant impact of the reality we face. Ka Ni Kanichihk has incredible programs that support families who have been impacted by the loss of missing and murdered loved ones,” she said. “This will truly make a difference in our community.”

Dodie Jordaan, executive director of Ka Ni Kanichihk, said the licence-plate initiative not only raises awareness about MMIWG2S, but also provides support to Ka Ni Kanichik’s programs towards education.

“Together, we drive change, honouring the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQ+ while supporting survivors and communities on the path to healing and justice,” she said.

Smith’s bill, called Bill 204, received royal assent on May 30 and unanimous support from all parties. If all the 6,000 plates available are sold, Ka Ni Kanichihk will receive $180,000 by springtime, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe, the minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance, said.

We are reminded how short life really is and how we are just passing through. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sandra Rust at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with cancer at The Boundary Trails Health Centre. She will be forever missed and remembered by her daughter, Juliana, her granddaughters Ashley (Mitch) and Suzanne (Peter). Her great grandsons Tayden Adam Don, Lukas Adam and Nolan Parker. She was also so close to meeting her first great granddaughter. Her sisters Betty, Anne, Chris(Bill), Brother Jack(Shirley) Sister-in-law Anne. She was predeceased by her brothers Henry and Peter in infancy. She will also be missed by Jurgen and family in Germany. We can’t forget about her precious girls, Gloria and Abby, her beautiful shaded silver Persian cats that she loved and adored.

She was born in Winkler, Manitoba to Helena and Henry E Fehr. She grew up on a farm and was raised in a Christian home where there was strong faith and love for the Lord. Working on a farm, her parents had strong work ethics which she followed and carried through her whole life. She took pride in a job well done in everything she did. From gardening, decorating her home (especially at Christmas), cooking/baking, painting and so much more. She was a one woman show!

Sandra met Adam and got married on October 23, 1964. They then moved to Thompson where they spent over 50 years. Adam worked for Inco and Sandra worked at Canada Post for a total of 48 years. Her dream home in Morden went up for sale and she was driving down ASAP to make all the arrangements to buy it.

She got transferred with Canada Post and worked part time in Morden and Winkler, finally retiring in 2020.

She was always the life of the party. She loved to laugh and it was very contagious. She enjoyed sitting on her veranda drinking coffee scrolling on her iPad, going for rides with Adam, puttering around the house, cleaning, finding new projects to work on, taking pictures of the sunrises and her home, anything that was the color white and trying to stay in touch with everyone who knew her. She had a special talent for antiques and beautiful things. Her last piece was a China cabinet that she had to pick up in Winnipeg with all the treasures still inside.

She said this is the last one, and it was truly a beautiful find. She always had such an eye for these things.

Most importantly, she loved her family and she showed it in everything she said and did. She felt so blessed to have her daughter and even more so when Juliana gave her two granddaughters to love, spoil and spend so much time with throughout their lives, she never let them down. Then having her great grandchildren and watching them grow for as long as she did was an added blessing that she was so fortunate to have and she knew that. She woke up every morning blessed to see another sunrise and she was at peace for when angels would come take her to heaven. We really hope it was Adam, in his handsome tuxedo and his chauffeur hat, white gloves, and all. We are positive it would have been.

When Adam passed away 2 years ago, it was a big hit to our family, but now .. knowing she is in eternal life and we will not get to see her smile, touch her hand and hug her tightly, stings.. but, in Sandra fashion, we are going to smile, laugh, be humble, work hard, and stay strong because that is all the things she has shown and taught us to do. She would want us to think of all the good times and try not to stay sad for too long.

We would like to thank all the palliative care doctors, nurses and health care aids at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Larry Reimer the Chaplin, Juliana and Betty for all the long days and nights at the hospital, working split shifts making sure she never had to be alone. Thank you to all her family and friends for reaching out to the family during this difficult time.

Cremation has taken place and as per Sandra’s wishes, there will be no formal service. A celebration of life to follow at a later date.

The Manitoba Métis Federation’s Infinity Women Secretariat is applauding the provincial government’s decision to sell specialty licence plates in support of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and TwoSpirited people.

On Friday, the Manitoba government announced the plates would be available for purchase at Autopac agents across the province. Thirty dollars from the sale of each set of place, which cost $70, will go toward supporting Ka Ni Kanichihk, a Winnipeg-based Indigenous-led organization.

Oct 2, 1938 – Nov 29, 2023 James (Jim) Petrie passed away on November 29th at the age of 85 at Thompson General Hospital.

Jim was born in Glassville, New Brunswick but has lived in Thompson, Manitoba for 40+ years.

Jim was the youngest of 5 children born to Jim and Edna Petrie, and is survived by his brother Ralph Petrie who resides in Idaho. Jim is also survived by his step-son Gary MacInnis who resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and many family members scattered across Canada and around the world.

Jim was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and pretty much any activity that allowed him to be outside. He was also a member of the Legion, and over the years he participated in many events hosted by the Legion including cribbage tournaments, darts, curling, Bingo, and meat draws.

Jim will be missed by many.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life, as well as a private family interment to be held at a later date Jim’s family would like to thank the staff at Thompson General Hospital for the care and compassion they provided in his final days, as well as his many friends and invaluable neighbours who have been such a great support system.

Festivities has only began as the Holiday spirit has us all dancing once again to Maria Caries’s finest. Parades and Santa Clauses dazzle the children all over again from one community to the next.

Coming from the small but immensely mettlesome town of Wabowden is the annual anticipated Christmas Tree Lighting and Santa Parade. Festivities packed this past weekend with activities fit for the whole family from beginning to end, starting with the Community Christmas Parade featuring a total of 5 floats, hasted by the Fire Hall and Ambulance services.

Then moving into the evening the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) far surpassed high expectations in their coordinated events with setting up a loader to bring in their towering record breaking Christmas tree to be set up in the center of town teetering into the clouds. The countdown commenced as the numerous lights swarming the tree lit up the town square like daylight.

Recreation Director Jaimie Henderson has only held this current position since the 1st of April making this her first Christmas coordinated event. Henderson gloated on her remarkable volunteers who put in a great deal of effort

to ensure everyones enjoyment. A skating rink was even cleared special for the occasion.

As the evening concluded Jordan’s Principle came from Thompson to give out free Santa photography

for kids and families, with even a special prize given to nearly every child from Santa.

Antisemitic rhetoric in Canada: a call for concern and action

Dear Editor: According to police and independent monitors, antisemitic incidents in Canada have spiked dramatically in 2023. Many Canadians will satisfy ourselves with the idea that this is merely an unfortunate consequence of overseas events. Jewish Canadians, we are confident, need not worry. These are political acts, not real hate crimes.

We would never discount the experiences of any other group in this

fashion. Only Jews. That should be evidence enough of a problem.

Moreover, the explosion of antisemitic rhetoric and incidents is clearly a sign of a larger problem. Other overseas conflicts do not lead to measurable spikes in domestic hate crimes.

Why does this one?

Finally, and more importantly, there is a significant strain of undeniable Jew-hatred and even genocidal threats in the anti-Israel perspectives we are hearing in mainstream

public discourse. The omnipresent slogan “From the river to the sea” is a call for the elimination of the Jewish state and maintains only the weakest plausible deniability against the idea that it is an overt call for extermination. More unnerving is the chant, “Intifada! Revolution! There is only one solution!” – an outright call for violence and a deliberate echo of the “solution” attempted against the Jewish people just a few decades ago.

Decent Canadians are

mostly silent in the face of these rhetorical atrocities – even though we know that words have consequences.

And that is precisely why our Jewish neighbours are alarmed. It is not so much that a small number of activists perpetuate deeply hateful antisemitism. It’s that seemingly every other person marching for Palestine is utterly untroubled by the company they keep.

New Manitoba license plates to support MMIWG2S

Manitoba drivers now have one more option to choose when getting a license plate. At a cost of $70, the sale of these new plates will help support families of the MMIG2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirited) community.

From each plate sale, $30 will be donated to Winnipeg-based Ka Ni Kanichihk, an Indigenous-led charity that provides prevention and intervention programs to help families and individuals of all ages heal from trauma, find success in life, and become leaders themselves.

They also provide education and job skills training and mentorship. Proceeds from the licence plate sales will primarily support education costs for students from MMIWG2S families.

The announcement of the new plates, which are available at any Autopac agent, was made on December 8

by Bernadette Smith, Minister of Housing, Addictions

and Homelessness, and Justice Minister Matt Wiebe, the minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI).

Smith introduced the bill earlier this year and on May 30 it received royal assent in the Legislature after garnering unanimous support from all the parties.

“The pain and grief of the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people is felt every day across our province,” said Wiebe.

“These specialty plates are just one small way Manitobans can show solidarity and contribute to an important cause.”

According to an RCMP report, nearly 1,200 Indigenous women and girls were murdered or went missing between 1980 and 2012.

In September 2016, the federal government launched a national inquiry to investigate the cause. Three years later, the MMIWG National Inquiry released their final report, finding that the murders and disappearances were largely the result of “persistent and deliberate human and Indigenous rights violations and abuses.”

The REDress project

began with Métis artist Jaime Black. Her goal was to draw public attention in an artistic way to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes meted out against Indigenous women in Canada.

Red, she says, is a sacred colour in many cultures. The fact that the dress is empty, she adds, is symbolic of the person who is no longer with us.

Dodie Jordaan, the executive director of Ka Ni Kanichihk, is grateful for the license plate initiative and believes the proceeds will go a long way to healing within the Indigenous culture.

“Together we drive change, honouring the lives of the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQ+ while supporting survivors and communities on the path to healing and justice,” Jordaan said in the press release.

According to Wiebe, the license plates have the potential to raise around $180,000 for Ka Ni Kanichihk by the spring of next year if all 6,000 plates are purchased by then.

Hanover, Man., man charged, fined after allegedly shooting bald eagle illegally, Conservation Officers say

A man is facing fines after Manitoba Conservation officers say he illegally shot a bald eagle with a high-powered rifle, and left the animal for dead.

According to the province, Manitoba Conservation officers received a tip through their Turn In Poachers (TIP) program last Friday about a bald eagle that had been shot, and left wounded near the community of Grunthal, south of Winnipeg.

A provincial conservation officer, along with volunteers from the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre responded to the call last Friday, and found a bald eagle, a species protected under conservation laws in Manitoba, badly injured with a bullet lodged in its chest area, and a broken

wing.

According to the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre, their staff captured the eagle and tried to save its life, but it succumbed to its injuries about two days after being shot.

The witness who called in the incident also helped conservation officers to locate the man who is alleged to have shot the animal, as according to the province that witness was able to provide a description of a truck involved in the incident, and an officer later located and interviewed the man they say shot the eagle.

According to Manitoba Conservation, a 50-year-old man from the RM of Hanover has now been charged under the Wildlife Act for hunting on private land without permission, and for killing or attempting to kill a protected species, and now faces a maximum fine

“I’ve been posting my letters in the dog poo box for two years”

In the peaceful community of Munk, located only a handful of kilometers South of Split Lake is year round dog walking trail and open meadow dedicated to the recreation of local residents. But the quant title of a simple dog park got an upgrade of postal service when letters began to be a constant find in the poop discard box.

This discovery didn’t become evident for the first 7 months as smelly letters were confronted to the

garbage boy who had been collecting these anonymous letters nearly since the beginning.

“I thought someone was playing prank on me at first, but none of them applied to me and I didn’t know what was going on” stated 14 year old Keenan Matthews who has volunteered the last year to take care of the dog park trash and the apparent prizes left in the poop box.

It was soon discovered that an elderly man living near the meadow on his own in the comforts of his own home and diagnosed

with Alzheimer’s Disease had mistaken the poop box as a mail box sending letters to a long diseased lover.

No living family remains living in this elderly man’s life as this unique misunderstanding brought awareness to the local seniors home and now houses him with proper care. When asked about the letters he’s been sending it’s believed this has been an occurrence for the past two years!

We’re now left with the reminder and friendly advice that even if it might seem like our mail is stuck

in the muck of one place delivering like snail mail, it hasn’t quite gone to the dogs like this delivery

Duties: The Program Support Clerk provides customer service to a diverse clientele and performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties including reception, performing financial management, timekeeping, purchasing inventory of office supplies, maintaining equipment and service contracts, maintaining vendor (individual, employer, or organization) documentation and case management, maintaining contracts and general office support and archiving.

Qualifications: Essential • Experience working with the public in a customer service-oriented environment, providing service to a diverse clientele.

• Experience performing administrative and/or clerical duties which may include but are not limited to: reception, answering phone, records, management, filing, data entry, etc.

• Experience performing timekeeping, accounting transactions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations and/or creating financial reports.

• Ability to coordinate and support processing of financial and program paper and electronic documents.

City: Winnipeg Department: Community Oncology Program–Provincial Cancer Referrals & navigation (PCRN) Union: MNU Hiring Status: Permanent, 1.0 FTE, Days Mon-Fri Salary: $42.124, $43.683, $45.245, $46.947, $48.898, $50.789, $52.855, $55.007 Reporting to the Manager of Provincial Cancer Referral and Navigation, and supported by the Director of Community Oncology Program, the Indigenous Nurse Navigator will enhance patient outcomes and experience by facilitating culturally safe, trauma-informed care, and access to cancer care services and resources for First Nations, Métis and Inuit people with cancer. The Indigenous Nurse Navigator has knowledge of Indigenous context, culture, the impacts of colonization and racism, and gaps and barriers to accessing care.

This position will provide person-centered guidance and support and will promote self-management and empower Indigenous patients and families throughout the cancer experience at CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB). The Indigenous Nurse Navigator will work within the scope of practice, standard operating procedures, directives and guidelines to support patients. The incumbent will work collaboratively within a provincial community of practice of Nurse Navigators. Through case management and comprehensive assessment, the Indigenous Nurse Navigator can assess, recognize and address a wide range of physical, psychosocial, emotional, and practical needs.

The incumbent will support patients in navigating and throughout their journey along the healthcare system by creating plans that address their specific needs and the needs of those included in their circle of support. Approaches will include facilitating access and connections to supportive services, appropriate referrals, surgery, primary care, and other specialist care such as Medical Oncology and Hematology.

The Indigenous Nurse Navigator will help foster the advancement of health equity at the service delivery organization and healthcare system levels.

Education • Bachelors degree in Nursing from an accredited educational institution required • Masters degree preferred Experience • Must be of Indigenous ancestry • Completion of an oncology related program or willingness to complete a recommended course within 12 months of taking the position as part of orientation supported by CCMB- e.g. DeSouza Introduction to Oncology course • Completion of a recognized Patient Navigation Course or willingness to complete within 12 months of taking the position, as part of orientation supported by CCMB e.g. DeSouza Navigation course • Professional experience caring for patient and families with cancer or other related chronic conditions • Experience with community and/or public health healthcare delivery and/or case management • Experience in working with equity-deserving communities • Understanding of and experience with Adult Education principles • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered Preferred • Ability to speak an Indigenous language • Ability to speak French Required Licenses, Registrations, Designations • Must be registered or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) • Physical Demands and Working Conditions • The incumbent must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.
