One might have expected a vigil for missing and murdered loved ones at the Manitoba Métis Federation Hall Dec. 2 to have been a sombre affair, but one of the sound heard there was laughter.

“Indians like to laugh,” emcee Ed Azure would later say. “If you hang out with Indian people long enough, it doesn’t matter where they are, what the occasion is, you’re going to hear laughter. In laughter, we understand, it is the music of our Creator. It helps to ease the sorrow we carry, and at the same time, honours our maker.”

The Manitoba Métis Federation was hosting its second vigil and feast for those who lost loved ones to homicide, and those that remain to be found. While not exactly an annual event (the last one was in 2013), it’s hoped that future years will see a regular return. The vigil also marks the beginning of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation’s (NCN) homicide support group, beginning Dec. 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Caring 4 You office in Thompson.

Felix Walker, CEO of the NCN Family and Community Wellness Centre, helped greet attendees for the evening: “It’s times like these that the memories of my brother come flying back to me. One of the things we want to accomplish this evening, is to create awareness, to all of you that are here, that you’re not alone. We share a common experience, that we hope will create a common bond amongst all of us. Some of the families here have found closure. Others have not, and that’s a difficult thing, in communities as small as ours. As we go through this evening, remember that you’re not alone. That none of us are alone.”

Present to speak for the community were Thompson Mayor Dennis Fenske, NCN Coun. Shirley Linklater (representing NCN Chief Marcel Moody) and Chief Hilda Fitzner (representing Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Sheila North Wilson), and Rielle Beardy, (representing Churchill-Keewatinook Aski MP Niki Ashton). It also featured an honour song performed

by Tiffany Yetman and company.

With ever-certain hope, Azure introduced the feast with a testament to our loved ones’ final resting place: “As Indian people, we never knew of this place called hell. For us, there were four heavens, and there still are. Every once in awhile, they’ll come and visit you; when you’re driving somewhere, you’ll feel a little chill, and their memory will come back strong. That’s them. And that’s what this is: An offering to our loved ones. We want to make sure, through this food, we send our love to our loved ones. We say, ‘come and eat with us.’”

The second half of the evening gave an opportunity for families to speak of their loved ones, with heartfelt testimonies from the Stweart, Moose, and Spence families. For some, their loss had come over 20 years earlier; but as families fought through tears to express their hopes and their pain, it would seem that not a year had passed. It was a powerful part of the vigil, with open tears, loving embraces, and the padding of Azure’’s gentle humour.

The end of the vigil was marked by the singing of songs, and the lighting of candles to be offered to the pictures of absent family. There were not enough candleholders to hold the love that was in the room that night.

The Thompson Crisis Centre thanks École Riverside School for their efforts in this year’s contest.

It is with heavy hearts, we the King family, regretfully inform family and friends of the peaceful passing of Gene. After a short courageous battle against cancer, and with his family at his side, Gene succumbed quickly in the early morning of November 10, 2015 in the Assiniboine Centre at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Gene was born in Bonavista, NÀd on October 23, 1959. He left Newfoundland in 1978 to work 2 years seasonal with CN Rail.

In September of 1980 he was hired on with Inco Metals Co. In Thompson and spent the next 33 years working in the re¿nery. He retired on April 1, 2013 and moved to Oak River, MB where he spent his last 2 ½ years enjoying retirement.

He leaves to mourn his two sons Jeffrey and Mitchell; 3 grandsons Ethan, Hunter and Madden; mother Nellie Blundon; brothers Keith, Greg, Jared (Tammy) and Harold (Mary); sisters Yvonne (Bruce) and Bridie; step brothers Bruce (Gladys), Barry (Linda), Don (Ellen) and Jeff; step sisters Rosanne (Glen) and Debbie, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He will also be sadly missed by numerous coworkers and the many friends he made throughout his lifetime.

A Celebration of Gene’s Life will be held at his home in Oak River in May of 2016.

Thompson woman survives fall through ice on Burntwood River; city warns of extreme hazard KACPER ANTOSZEWSKI KACPER@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

Winter defines our lives in Thompson: Every year, we drag solid shacks onto the ice for fishing, winter roads are provincially managed banalities, and for those years outside of the norm, cold summers are more quickly recalled than warm winters.

It’s hard, then, to complain about midnight rains in December. But a harrowing experience on Nov. 27 reminds us that changes in the season require changes in habits, as local resident Janice Gagne survived breaking through the Burntwood River’s ice twice while trying to rescue her struggling puppy, and was rescued through the efforts of her daughters, and Thompson Fire & Emergency Services (TFES).

Gagne came into the Thompson Citizen office to speak about her experience Dec. 1. With a few days to collect her thoughts, she was still visibly shaken. “My body is still spasming. I was told it would be a few weeks before that would stop.”

She told me how her daughters were out with their puppy between Sauger Crescent and the Twilight Water Ski Club, along the shoreline beyond the Millennium Trail. The puppy, unaccustomed to winter, ventured out onto the ice, and slipped off of the edge into the river. Her oldest daughter attempted to reach the puppy, but when she heard the ice began to crack under her, she called her mother.

“I got together a sled, a hose, and a blanket, and called emergency services. Spread my weight on my belly, I crawled out, and once I realized it was getting thinner, I stayed where I was and attempted from there. I guess I shifted my weight a few too many times, and I broke through.” Janice’s daughters managed to pull her out, but it was when she broke through a second time that proved a more challenging: “That time I was in the water, out a little deeper, and the only thing that saved me was that I didn’t go fully under. The current was strong: my boot came off of my foot.”

After five minutes of struggling, Gagne’s daughters managed to pull their mother out a second time. By then, her body was completely numb; without competent hands and a backboard, she would not make it out of the woods, despite making it out of the icy waters. “I thought that I would be able to get up, but I couldn’t.

My body had seized right up. I knew I was going to end up in the water I think,

subconsciously, because I emptied my pockets before I went out. So I knew the risk. But I never knew what it would feel like going through. There’s no mental prep for it. There’s nights I wake up and I’m jumping, gasping for air. It’s all in my head, but, well, it’s in how you deal with it.”

Luckily, emergency services was not far. A team from TFES, suited up with wetsuits, tried unsuccessfully to rescue the puppy, but were quickly able to come to the aid of its owner. “If I had to wait out there another 20 minutes, I’m not sure I would be here to tell the story.”

Though she’s still feeling the aftermath of the experience, Gagne says she might very well do it again: “I would like to say I wouldn’t go in after the dog, but he’s your family. Seeing him, hearing him cry, I knew my daughter’s heart was breaking, and there wasn’t anything else I could do.”

Gagne had written a heartfelt thank you on Facebook to the emergency workers who extracted her from the riverbank.

Captain Steve Molloy from TFES, who headed up Gagne’s rescue, was unequivocal about the ice conditions surrounding Thompson this winter, telling anyone planning to head out on the ice that it’s a bad idea. “This time of year? Do not even venture near the river’s edge. Stick to the Millenium Trail. Keep your animals on the leash. For walking, the rule of thumb is 15 centimetres. For skating it’s 20, and for snowmobiling, the minimum is 25 cm. Where we found Ms. Gagne, she was lying on, at best, two-and-a-half inches of ice, and where she had fallen through attempting to rescue her dog, it was maybe an inch. ” If you’re travelling with companions who have fallen through the ice, Molloy says to ensure you’re not putting yourself in the same danger before attempting a rescue: “As hard as it may be, don’t try to go out and rescue your partner, because you may be putting yourself in harm’s way as well. If you are attempting it, get low, test the ice as you go along, and use whatever you have, a rope, a large branch, anything like that.”

Malloy mentions the City of Thompson is asking even experienced snowmobilers to stay off of the ice until conditions improve: “Younger, inexperienced riders, inquisitive as they may be, may possibly follow their tracks and get into trouble.”

School parking bylaw enforcement making responsible parents victims To the Editor: This morning I witnessed something that I know is a source of frustration for many parents of small schoolaged children around the Thompson area. At the Burntwood School, an elderly man parked in the drop-off zone and quickly walked his kindergarten-aged child into the school. Waiting on the scene were the Community Safety Officers who promptly wrote and issued this man a ticket.

He broke the law. No doubt about it. It was a no-parking zone. However, is this really the kind of enforcement of bylaws the city is going to practise? Parents bring their children to school now because many don’t view Thompson as a safe place to allow young children to walk anymore. At the Burntwood School, there are 14 visitor parking spots for over, what I estimate to be, 200 students. There simply is no place to stop legally and walk in or to observe your child going into the school without breaking the law unless you are lucky enough to secure one of these spots.

Instead of recognizing their culpability in a shortage of parking spots, daily dangerous traffic congestion, and an unsafe environment for children to walk to school in the first place, the city chooses instead to enforce bylaws at times of school drop-off and pick-up. I believe this does not fit into a responsible community policing practice. I can certainly understand parking enforcement at the mall, on the streets on snow and garbage days, but parents dropping off their children at school and making sure they are safe before they leave? I struggle with that. I know that I am not alone thinking this.

I urge the City of Thompson, and School District of Mystery Lake to take a good hard look at the parking and waiting requirements at each of their elementary schools and come up with a parking plan and bylaw enforcement that serves the community a little better than this. You are making victims out of responsible and caring parents. Was that the intent of these bylaws?

Sale of port and railway could be good or bad

T

he news that OmniTrax Canada is looking for a buyer for the Hudson Bay Railway and the Port of Churchill is a glass half-full, glass halfempty situation which could go either way at this point.

In a best-case scenario, the company finds a buyer who agrees to their price and who has the desire and means to make the railway and port more reliable and profitable than they currently are.

In the worst case, no buyer steps forward and both the port and the railway shut down, jeopardizing the very existence of Northern Manitoba communities that rely on the Hudson Bay Railway and giving shippers one less place through which to send their wares.

The latter scenario does

not seem likely to come to pass. Although it isn’t unprecedented for communities to close up shop when their transportation link are eliminated, it hardly seems that either the federal or provincial governments would like to be seen abandoning the railway that serves as the only land link for some Northern Manitoba communities outside of the winter road system.

The port, however, may not have a saviour.

Churchill is often touted as Canada’s only deepwater Arctic port, which it is, and a strategic asset that benefits the country in somewhat nebulous ways. But, as a private entity, it is also a business and, while in recent years it has seen record volumes go through, this year, it is not a very suc-

cessful one, having shipped several hundred thousand fewer tonnes of grain and other products than the previous shipping season. And though endless successions of failed restaurants in the same location are testament to the fact that, in business, there is often someone who thinks they have the secret, the port and associated railway are a much larger proposition. OmniTrax paid only $10 to purchase the port from the Canada Ports Corporation after buying the rail line from The Pas to Churchill from CN for $11 million in 1997. What’s more, the problems with the railway are well-known, with sometimes frequent and lengthy delays, which are existence-threatening for the communities that depend on the line to get

To the Editor: When we were children, we shared like a child, laughed and danced like a child, full of love only children know in their hearts. At Christmas season, a spirit blooms, and again we share, laugh and dance, just like the little people do.

My hope at this Christmas is that we re-live this spirit every day, as a human family, transforming the world we share, as only a child can.

To the Editor: “Pathway to Grief.” We hear often out of our comfort zone is that we do not want to be burdened with your troubles because we have enough to worry ourselves. Yet, sharing our troubles with loved ones, a close friend or a neighbour lightens our burdens of pain and restores our balance to move forward. Sharing with others pulls us out of isolation. It brings us closer into a circle of connection with our lives in dealing with moments of “pathway to grief.” How often, without surprising that we do feel the knots in our gut loosening once we explain in our own words our situation to others. Periodically, this may open the doors to our deepest connection with each other. When this happens the “pathway to grief” can be shared and we can break down the walls of isolation and thus we can rebuild many bridges to strengthen that connection that were never connected before.

But the truth is, their services have been cut, and it will likely require some creative solutions from the private sector and government, and most likely both, to ensure that the rail link and port do not become history.

Thompson Tourist app now available for iOS

The Thompson Tourist app is now available in Apple’s App Store, providing iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users with support for the application.

The app has been available on the Google Play Store since the end of August, and remains free to download across all platforms.

App developer Edward Palmer originally developed the app as a tool for visitors and newcomers to Thompson to navigate what can often be a word-of-mouth landscape. Though now resolved, the lack of support for Apple products represented a significant barrier in the app’s proliferation.

However, as Palmer explains: “An app is always in your pocket; not everyone can browse the Internet on their phones.” Packaging the service in a small app allows the service to be

used consistently on devices that do not have access to the cellular network, or whose users have used up their data.

Palmer sees the potential to address what he sees as an overall deficit in information about businesses and events in Thompson, and hopes to expand the app in the coming year.

For December, Palmer plans to include holiday-specific information: “For Christmas, I’d like to add a holiday icon that will include community events in chronological order.” The list will focus on non-profit events, and will include a “donate now” button to make it easy to contribute to your favourite community organization over the holiday season. There will be no cost to being featured in the holiday schedule.

Thompson to adopt statement on the sustainable development of the boreal forest

Thompson took one more step towards the establishment of a distinct boreal identity at the Nov. 30 city council meeting, when a statement on sustainable development of the boreal forest was adopted.

The statement had originally been presented to to council on Nov. 16

by Tim Johnston, manager of Community Futures North Central Development and former mayor of Thompson, on behalf of Mathew Jacobson, from Pew Charitable Trusts’ International Boreal Conservation Campaign. Johnston recalled when northern stakeholders fi rst met regarding the boreal plan back in February: “What I found is that industry, municipality, First Nations, Northern Affairs communities, and environmental organizations understand that no one can be successful without working in partnership with each other.”

Fenske’s words come with added weight when considered with an interview he and Ceppetelli offered for the Winnipeg Free Press’s Town and Country Edition: “While it’s good press to show what sort of things we’re doing up here, I have some frustrations with the southern media. Out of a 30-minute interview, where we had just finished discussing everything that had been happening in Thompson, it ended with questions like, ‘Do you have an airport? Do you have a railway?’

Johnston notes several boreal plans already being formulated by the Manitoba government and several development groups, like the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce.

“I welcome all of these initiatives and I think they’re important. But there was one key ingredient that was missing in all of them: The need for the involvement of Northern Manitoba, not as a recipient of a document, but as a contributor to a document. We know there’s an election in this province next April.

We know it’s important to get in front of these political parties what Northern Manitoba believes.”

The statement was received with strong support by city council, with both Mayor Dennis Fenske, city manager Gary Ceppetelli, and Coun.

The Thompson Ski Club can breathe easier for 2015, after replacing their snow-making system what was destroyed by an electrical fire on November 10. However, the weather to date remains un-cooperative, making the beginning of snowmaking, or the ski season in general, uncertain.

2014 was a rough winter season for Mystery Mountain and the Thompson Ski Club: A garage fire on November 10 destroyed the winter park’s capacities for snowmaking, including guns, water pump, resevoir tank, and an assortment of spare parts and supplies which could have made salvaging the season, well, a lot easier. Then there was the snow: While Atlantic Canada was being bombarded with record-breaking storms of over 400cm of total snowfall, the air in northern Manitoba seemed frozen in place by a “polar vortex” that had gripped the area for the last two winters. Mystery Mountain’s snow base was less than ten centimeters on main runs, and volunteers spent several late nights grooming and packing pitiful snowfalls to squeeze out every last bit of winter.

“You’d think in Thompson Manitoba, we’d get enough snow,” says former President and continuing member Geoff Lamontagne.

“But when you grow up in Thompson, you might not get much snow until Christmas.

You might get the cold weather, but not the snow.” On average, Mystery Mountain makes roughly 30-45 centimeters of snow every year. It’s not fluffy, magical snow, by any means: “It’s dense, very dense. Almost like pouring sugar out and standing on it.

But when you use it as a base, along with fresh snow, it’s a good thing to have.”

For now, Mystery Mountain renewed it’s snowmaking capacities with a new pumphouse, built by volunteer members, and a new HKD Snowmaking system, including a variable-drive pump and 3 snowmaking wands, securing the ski season for 2015.

The previous snowmaking system used low-pressure nozzles to atomize the water being pumped through them, creating a mist that would freeze almost instantly into snow crystals, feeding into a high-powered fan which distributed the mist and provided some control over the distance and direction which the mist was being sprayed. The new wand systems have no such fan. They do offer other advantages, however: the higherpressure nozzles used allow effective snowmaking at warmer temperatures (-5C, as

opposed to -10C), and can be moved short distances by snowmobile. Meanwhile, the new variable-drive pump allows for compensations in pressure depending on the length and path of the hose, meaning, with luck, that a resevoir tank is no longer necessary.

Not to mention, they offer a significant cost advantage over fan-driven snowguns, both in terms of regular cost and power usage.

The new system has run roughly $100, 000 at this point, but Geoff says the work isn’t over yet, and that the process of upgrading has already been moving for years: “It’s a multi-step process, and we’re still hoping for some funding from the province; While we’re back to where we were before the fire, we need to replace the piping system that runs up the mountain, to ensure they can handle the new pressure and volumes.”

Mystery Mountain is a non-profit facility: the continuing upgrade of the park’s facilities is funded through regular operations like lift tickets, as well as fundraising efforts, grants, and support from local businesses: Last year, Vale helped alleviate the burden of a poor season with a $25, 000 donation.

Volunteers have been working since October to ensure that the new building, and the new system. “The good thing about our base of volunteers here,” says Geoff, “Is that everyone has a specialty. Geoff Lindstrom knows diesel very well, some members who are very good carpenters, everyone has something they do really well, and can use it to help support the club. It’s like a co-op.”

Yet while ski resorts out West have been opening weeks ahead of schedule, skiers and resorts alike are cursing what is no doubt a source of joy for most: A lack of precipitation is one thing, but with temperatures still regularly approaching zero here in the north, the weather remains too unstable for effective snowmaking, and the margin for error with an untested snowmaking system shrinks by the day.

I asked Geoff why he keeps skiing in Manitoba, where so many others drop the sport. While the runs are short, all varieties of terrain can be found around Thompson, from tree runs, to moguls, to groomers: “The volunteers that came before us made sure that every type of terrain was available here.

By the time you get out to the mountains, their black runs are like our blue runs!”

Dec. 6 was the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, Girls, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) Community, and to mark the occasion, University College of the North (UCN), the University of Manitoba, the Thompson Crisis Centre and Ma-Mow-We-Tak Friendship Centre hosted Thompson’s second-annual REDress Project Dec. 4. The REDress Project is an art installation planned

by Jaime Black, hoping to gather donations of 600 red dresses, which will be hung across Winnipeg,

as the project’s web page describes, “as a visual reminder of the staggering number of women who are no longer with us�.

Also presenting were Sue Caribou, of Family First and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, Colin Bonnycastle with the White Ribbon Campaign, as well as the UCN Gay Straight Alliance.

After opening prayers, the gathering began with a special mention to the murder of 14 female engineering students in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989.

event that day: “One of the responses was that a few male friends of mine got together, a few weeks afterwards, to create a response by men, and out of that, the White Ribbon Campaign was created.“ Dr. Marleny Bonnycastle, professor of social work at University of Manitoba, introduced the REDress Project: “This is an educational awareness day, and some say, a political day, too. This is a day to reect on the fact that violence against women continues in all societiesâ€?.

Recent UCN graduates Bertha, Ras, and Amy each offered proďŹ les of women and their families, who have gone missing, like Belinda Vivian McKay, Carrie Marie Sinclair, or Lorna Lynn.

LGBTQ activist Brielle Beardy was also invited to speak “Our new government has promised an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women. We have to hope that this inquiry will happen, but this is not only the responsibility of our federal government; we have to hold it to all levels of government, and ourselves.�

Long-time activist Hilda Anderson-Pyrz spoke to the colonial role in domestic violence: “The role of indigenous women has changed since the beginning of European contact.

Prior to contact, our indigenous women, girls, and transgender women

were highly respected in our communities, as leaders and as givers of life.

Understanding and knowing how colonization, residential schools, and racism have impacted our family structures is essential for building a better life for future generations. If we don’t understand what happened, it’s hard to move forward.� Anderson-Pyrz recently founded Women of Heart, a circle based in Nelson House seeking to empower women and girls in Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation and provide local support for women in crisis that would otherwise be unavailable.

Yet it can’t be said that progress hasn’t been made. One member of the audience noted how the landscape for LGBTQ youth looked 20 years ago: “Between 15 and 20 years ago, some teachers and myself were on a committee charged with developing a protocol to make the district a ‘safe’ place. It was not met with a lot of acceptance.â€? The sister of one member of the committee, she says, had to leave town to ďŹ nd a safe school. “People at Inco were beaten up regularly.

Twenty years ago, there could be no way we could have a gay pride parade.

Today, we’ve had two. It’s good to see there’s been some progress, though that’s not each individual’s experience, and it’s important to remember that.�

Juniper Centre celebrates Disability Matters: Vote 2016 kickoff on IDPD

The United Nations declared Dec. 3 to be the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and this year it also marked the kick-off of the Disability Matters: Vote 2016 campaign at the Manitoba Legislative Building in Winnipeg. The non-partisan campaign is meant to raise awareness among disabled voters regarding the options available to get out to the voting station, as well as all Manitobans, regarding putting issues surrounding disability at the forefront of the next provincial election.

Brenda Davidson, supervisor of the Society of Manitobans with Disabilities northern regional office, and Rachel Templeton, executive director for the Juniper Centre, helped explain the campaign.

“This event is more about awareness, advocating to people in the community,” Davison said. Templeton added, “The big role we do play is making sure that any of the people we support, if they have any questions about the coming election, or any accessibility issues, then we advocate and make sure they get out and vote. If they have any questions about who to vote for, we ask them to contact the parties themselves. We don’t say one way or another.”

For concerns among disabled northerners, the two say that accessibility is key: simple things like being able to call a cab, reach the ballot box, or even negotiating rough sidewalks, all become a significant challenge, both in reaching the ballot box, and in everyday life. “The bus might have a lift, but if the sidewalk is covered in snow, then how are you supposed to even get into the bus?”

Davidson, who is hard of hearing, also pointed out that there’s a lack of services available: “There’s a lot of things I don’t participate in, because I can’t hear them. We have no interpreters in Thompson, no computerized notetakers. If I wanted to bring up an interpreter, it would cost over $8,000 to bring one up for a day, including airfare and housing.”

The Disability Matters: Vote 2016 campaign is spearheaded by Barrier Free Manitoba, an organization of over 70 agencies of which the Juniper Centre is one. Barrier Free Manitoba, along with the Society of Manitobans with Disabilities, were instrumental in the implementation of the Accessibility for Manitobans Act in 2013.

Also speaking at the event was Kris Blake, president of People First, and Kelly Bindle, Progressive Conservative candidate for Thompson, was also present to thank participants for their attendance. People First is an educational awareness and advocacy group for

people with disabilities.

Notably, People First successfully campaigned to have an elevator installed in the Thompson Regional Community Centre. Bindleexpressed solidarity with the organization, though made no claims one way or another as to policy efforts.

LABAN students strut their stuff at Olmpic-style taekwondo tournament It was a day of tears and of joy, of losses and victories, of cheering and proud families. It was another exciting Olympic style taekwondo tournament. On Dec. 5, Olympic taekwondo coaches, Chris and Mitch Byrne of LABAN Fitness brought 20 students to Winnipeg to compete in the fourth-annual Taekwondo Manitoba Winter Classic Competition. There were more than 200 competitors in attendance at the West Kildonan Collegiate in Winnipeg and the LABAN team captured six gold, 12 bronze and eight bronze medals in total.

Second-degree black belt Terrance Thomas, originally from Nelson House and now the lead instructor at LABAN’s Fisher River branch, impressed the judges with his gold medal performance of the Keumgang form, sending the others in his division home with their tails between their legs. Green stripe Aliyah Cook, lead instructor of LABAN’s future Cross Lake branch, also blew away her competition with her gold medal performance in the forms competition. Green belt Dwayne Anderson, one of the lead instructors from LABAN’s Norway House branch, got a taste of his first-ever tournament and brought home a silver medal in forms.

Thompson students also came back proud and confident with multiple medals. Green belt Zander Reddy, who has now attended three tournaments, received a gold medal in forms and a bronze in sparring.

First-time tournament competitor green stripe Austin Kelly made everyone proud when he “kicked butt” and took the gold medal in sparring. First-time competitor green stripe Alexandre Parent received a received a bronze medal in forms after a close battle for the top in a large division, then he fought his way to a silver in sparring.

stripe belt siblings Rowan, Evander, and Lennox Nepitabo competed in both sparring and forms and brought home a total of four bronze and two silver medals.

Phyllis Bignell and husband, super parents and foster parents, brought their group of Aiden, Ethan, Darnell, and Nate to the Winnipeg competition and earned a household medal count of two gold, two silver and two bronze.

Blue stripe Erjonit Shabani, who attends tournaments often to gain more experience, brought back to Thompson two silver medals in both forms and sparring.

Yellow belt Krish Joshi’s second-ever tournament, impressed coaches and his very supportive mother, taking back to their new home in Alberta two shiny silver medals, defeating many in both events.

Yellow belt Gerald Hart and white belt Keiston Halcrow of Thompson, but under the Norway House taekwondo program, brought home a silver in forms and a silver in patterns respectively.

Kyle Chartrand’s sparring match was one of the most intense fights of the competition as he had to compete against a more experienced student. The battle was difficult as his opponent hit hard and was accurate. His opponent was quick and able to block and move away from Kyle’s fury of kicks. Despite getting kicked numerous times, he never fell to the ground. Kyle demonstrated what taekwondo training represents: confidence, self-control, perseverance and indomitable spirit.

Win or lose, LABAN Fitness taekwondo students fought well in both categories, gained experience and confidence, met new friends and contacts, and are now back in their training with more focus and determination than ever to do even better in their upcoming competitions scheduled for the end of February in Regina and another in Denver, Colorado.

Saunders second at national team selection event in Quebec

Former Thompsonite Jennifer Saunders came up one win short of a title at the Racquetball Canada national team selection event in Brossard, Que. Nov. 27-29, falling 8-15, 8-15 to Frédérique Lambert in the women’s final.

Lambert came into the tournament ranked as Canada’s top female racquetball athletes and leaves in the same position, while Saunders is ranked second.

Saunders opened the tournament with a 15-5, 15-4 victory over Danielle Drury of Saskatoon, then

knocked off Christine Richardson of Regina 15-3, 15-1 in the semifinals.

Results from this selection event and a second being held in Grande Prairie, Alberta in February will be used to select the racquetball players who will represent Canada at the Pan American Championships in Chile in March 2016. Along with the results from the Canadian championships in the spring, national team selection events will determine who Racquetball Canada sends to the International Racquetball Federation World Championships in Colombia next July.

Saunders also lost to Lambert in the finals of

the 2015 Canadian racquetball championships last spring after winning the doubles title with Drury earlier in the tournament.

That was Saunders’s 11th national women’s doubles title and, combined with her eight singles championships, gave her a record-tying 19th career women’s racquetball title. It was the first time she won a title with Drury. She and her previous doubles partner Josée Grand’Maître of Longueuil, Que., with whom Saunders won the 2014 national doubles championship, are tied with 19 combined national women’s singles and doubles racquetball championships.

One point for Northstars on the road

They didn’t return with a win but the Norman Northstars did pick up a point on their most recent road trip Dec. 4-6, courtesy of a 3-2 overtime loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings that opened the three-game swing.

Braden Paulic scored with just over five minutes left in the third period in Brandon to draw the Northstars into a 2-2 tie. Chipper Osiname had given the Wheat Kings a 2-1 lead a little more than halfway through the final frame. Bryce Webber opened the scoring for Brandon in the first period while Lance Laycock replied on a power play in the second period to knot the score 1-1. Jackson Popple got the winner for Brandon 3:18 into overtime.

Connor Faulkner made 29 saves in the loss, which saw the Northstars outshot 32-23.

The Northstars fell behind by three in Shoal Lake against the Yellowhead Chiefs the following day and never got back on even terms, though they cut the Chiefs’ advantage to a single goal three times before losing 6-4.

Brody Smith, Tucker Scantlebury and Josh Belcher all scored in the first

period for Yellowhead before Tony Apetagon got the Northstars on the board in the last minute of the period.

William Lutz cut the Chiefs’ advantage to one goal with his team on the man advantage five minutes into the second period, but Ryan Heino replied just over a minute later to double the lead. Paulic made it a 4-3 Yellowhead lead just before the midway point of the game before Datyon Heino struck back to put the Chiefs up 5-3 going into the third.

Tristan Galarneau did his best to get a Northstars comeback started when he scored just nine seconds after the first faceoff of the third period but Jacob Tibbats’s goal with a little more than eight minutes to play gave Yellowhead some insurance to seal the win. The Northstars were outshot 4024 with Jeremy Dutcawich making 34 saves in a losign cause.

Four goals against in an 11-minute span of the third period put the nails in the coffin for the Northstars in a 6-3 loss to the Parkland Rangers Dec. 6.

Shots in the game were 29-27 for Parkland with Faulkner making 19 saves on 45 shots before being replaced after the Rangers’ fifth goal by Dutcawich,

who stopped four of five shots he faced in the last 10:20 of the game.

The Northstars are 12th in the 12-team Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League with a 3-21-2 record for eight points, one behind the Pembina Valley Hawks. The Southwest Cougars, who

currently hold the eighth and last playoff spot, have 20 points so far this season.

The Northstars will be on home ice this weekend when they take on the Winnipeg Wild, who are currently second in the league with a 17-3-2 record for 36 points.

R.D. Parker Collegiate’s senior girls’ basketball team – the defending AAA provincial champions – started their quest fore a repeat in Winnipeg Dec. 3-5 but didn’t get as good a start as they wanted, winning one of three games.

The Trojans started off against the Sisler Spartans, who went on to win the tournament title, and fell 68-42. Their second match was a 53-47 win over the Kildonan East Reivers and they finished off the tournament with a 52-30 loss to the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes in the consolation finals.

The squad will be on the road again this weekend for the Pembina Trails Classic tournament in Winnipeg.

Jammin’ for Jackets keeps Thompson warm for a night

Jammin’ for Jackets shook the Juniper Centre apart on Dec. 3, bringing musicians, dancers, and music lovers together to have fun for a great cause, taking winter clothes, jackets, and perishable food donations to be donated to charity over the holiday season. The organizers, who said donations exceeded their expectations, thanked École Riverside School, Westwood School, Burntwood School, the Thompson Boys & Girls Club, After Dark Productions, Juniper Centre, RCMP Const. Rob Cleveland and Blake Ellis, as well as featured artists Monolith, Five Minutes from Everywhere, Rebel Riel, Harlie Pruder, Babylon & Blass, Kate Cook and the dancers. Pictured here is Five Minutes from Everywhere, who left the crowd chanting for an encore performance. They were more than obliged.
