Vale Manitoba Operations and the Mining Association of Manitoba hosted the 2016 Manitoba Provincial Mine Rescue Competition in Thompson May 27- 28, pitting four mine rescue teams from across the province in practical, technical, and firefighting challenges to qualify for the privilege to compete at the national level. The four teams represented the Tanco Mine from Bernic Lake, Hudson Bay’s Lalor and Flin Flon operations, and Thompson’s own Vale.

Friday featured an underground portion, where mine rescue competitors were subjected to a mine rescue scenario, and resolve a fi rst aid problem.

Saturday morning, teams alternated between firefighting and technical competitions. The technical portion was a written exam administered to competitors as individuals.

After, competitors had to troubleshoot and resolve a fault in a malfunctioning breathing apparatus.

Saturday afternoon, miners mixed and mingled for the practical skills portion of the event: crib building, the hose roll, the dummy drag, the passageway challenge and the Kaiser sled. While each competitor was scored individually, many challenges required teamwork among a mixed team of competitors. The events were judged and timed by a variety of mine rescue instructors from across the province.

The second was a basic, open fuel fire suspended over top of water, while the last was a large barrel fire to be fought with two people. Judged by representatives from Levitt Safety, scores were tallied on a demerit system: the more mistakes you made, the more demerits you received, with most mistakes costing a competitor one to two demerits. However, firefighters received only one canister each, and failure to extinguish a fire would cost a competitor a full 10 demerits.

This year was the fi rst year that the fire component would merit its own award, which was reserved for Hudson Bay’s Snow Lake team. But the overall 2016 provincial championship was claimed

by Thompson’s own Vale miners for the second year in a row, qualifying yet another team for the National Western Region Mine Rescue Competition to be hosted in Fernie for 2017.

At least one is not impressed, however, with the placement of dumpsters to collect renovation debris in the handicapped parking spaces nearest the hospital’s front entrance, after getting a ticket for parking in an area designated for taxis because no temporary handicapped parking had been designated.

Development at 128 Hemlock survives motion to rescind

Some members of city council continue to voice their dissatisfaction with the arrangements agreed upon concerning 128 Hemlock, a proposed multi-unit housing development that has drawn criticism for its dramatically reduced parking accommodations of only six immediate spaces, with an overflow agreement signed with the United-Lutheran Church nearby.

A motion was put forward at council’s May 24 meeting to rescind an earlier variance reducing the amount of parking required from what it would normally be.

The motion’s mover, Coun. Ron Matechuk, noted that he continued to have concerns about the development itself. However, he characterized his proposed rescindment as a matter of procedure: “The parking agreement is not meeting the requirement of another section of the same bylaw, due to the fact it’s outside of 40 metres.

Once they proposed this, I believe it should have gone to another variation order, and that at this point has not been addressed.”

Deputy Mayor Kathy Valentino dismissed any concerns that procedure was not properly followed:

“We’ve already voted on this once, and we can’t always go back to the table when we have questions and concerns. It doesn’t do much for our credibility. I’m happy with the process that was followed, so I won’t be supporting this.”

Both Mayor Dennis Fenske and Coun. Penny Byer agreed, with Byer noting that she believes there are other avenues open to resolving the parking issue other than rescinding the previously approved variance.

Coun. Duncan Wong also had qualms with the development’s satisfaction of bylaws as it currently stood, claiming that city bylaw’s stipulated that such facilities must have either a green space or a playground constructed alongside of them. “Look at all of the properties built over the last few years,” he explained. “Two on Arctic Drive, one on Fox Bay, and one is going up on Cambridge. When you drive by there, there’s no green spaces, no playgrounds for kids. Are we building a family-friendly complex for the people? I don’t think so.”

Coun. Dennis Foley noted that while the development did not feature new green spaces, it was located close to a recreation area. “This is a short walking distance from the

very popular Rotary Park, across two roads with designated crosswalks.

Never heard of playgrounds in bylaws. This is great development of the downtown area. The building is currently boarded up, and we have an organization looking to develop it into something positive.”

Coun. Blake Ellis agreed that it is an ideal, if not critical, opportunity.

“This is an element of $4 million, and if we choose to rescind this, we show to investors that the city is not open for business. We need this investment, and we need this housing.”

Coun. Colleen Smook did have concerns that two businesses (Fas Gas and one which chose to remain anonymous) continued to express their disapproval of the parking arrangement, and had asked her whether the city will be prepared to hand out tickets to wayward parkers. Coun.

Judy Kolada withdrew her previous support, noting that unnamed residents had also expressed some concerns.

In a recorded vote, the motion to rescind the previous resolution was defeated 5-4, with Wong, Smook, Matechuk and Kolada voting to rescind, and Foley, Ellis, Byer, Valentino and Fenske opposed.

JRB basketball has come a long way from humble beginnings

Thompson JRB girls’ basketball program has come a long way in seven years, from having a team who couldn’t even score a field goal at its first provincial club basketball championships in its first year to winning the under-14 rural division for the second time ever and qualifying for the under-16 city finals at this year’s championships.

“Our first season we played in the club provincials hosted by Basketball Manitoba,” recalls coach Kristin Donovan, one of the club’s founders. “We had kids from Grade 5 to Grade 8 playing the U14 category. Our first game out we played Kenora and were beat pretty bad, but our second game against the Magic was our most memorable game.”

That game saw the JRB squad lose 72-2 with the only points coming off a pair of free throws from Caitlin Fennell, who earlier this year was an all-star with R.D. Parker Collegiate’s back-toback champion senior girls’ basketball squad. Rather than letting that dampen their enthusiasm, however, the club’s players and coaches used it as motivation. In the years since, the U14 team has won the rural championship twice and been finalists two other times.

“The U16 club has placed in several tournaments but the highlight for their team was this year placing second in the city side of the provincials,” says Donovan.”The club is very proud of all of the girls and the hard work and dedication is has taken to get them to where they are.”

Members of this year’s U16 team were very proud of their accomplishments.

“Provincials this year, I believe it’s the best that our group of kids has ever done,” said Hannah Murdy, who’s been in the JRB club since it started. “We played amazingly. With the school program we won provincials so it would have been amazing to win both but we played very well that weekend.”

“They were very good games,” she says.

Elyshia Best joined the JRB program last year and said provincials was a wild ride.

“We won all our games up to finals and then played really really good in our first quarter, kept it 2-0 and then played hard the rest of the game,” Bast said. “Didn’t come out with the ‘W’ but a lot of effort was put into it.”

Members of the U14 team that won the rural provincials this year had a blast on the way to their title.

“I really enjoyed the tournament because we kept winning,” said Morgan McIvor.

“It’s just really been awesome playing in the atmosphere at provincials and I had a lot of fun with the girls,” said Emma Deibert, who joined the club just a few months ago.

“It was my first provincials ever and we got first place,” said long-time club member Ashley Singh.

Aarti Ghai was in her first club provincial tournament, too.

“Provincials was amazing,” she said.

The JRB players also enjoy the other aspects of being in the club.

“I’m super glad that coach Donovan asked me to come play because now I know how to play basketball,” said Madyson Caldwell,

who didn’t make the trip to provincials.

Serenity Katchmar, who used to watch her older sister play in JRB before joining herself, did play in provincials but credits the program with much more than that.

“I’m really thankful for coach Donovan because she practically built me,” Katchmar says. “She taught me how to actually play basketball.”

Adrianna Proulx, Kali Cummings and Blair Bodie are soon to be high school graduates, but they remember the program’s first few years, when it had far fewer than the 90 to 100 girls per season it has now.

“We started when there was probably like only 15 girls in the program when I was in Grade 6 and now seeing how many girls are playing in it now is incredible to see,” Proulx said. “Donovan and [coach Chris] Pelchat have been coaching since I was little and the amount of time that they’ve put into it is incredible because they don’t have to do it and they have grades all the way up from kindergarten to Grade 10 now.”

“The senior girls [at RDPC], they’ve been in the finals and won the last couple of years at provincials,” says Cummings. “A bunch of those girls played for JRB. That’s where it all started and Donovan and Pelchat turned us all into great athletes.”

“I started the second year

and it’s pretty awesome to see how far it’s come,” said Bodie. “It’s awesome to see all these girls out here and how much fun they have, just like we did when we were their age.”

The program wouldn’t have been possible without support from a lot of people over the years, Donovan says, including Corey Murdy, Randy McKay and Stephanie Wood, who helped outfit the team when the club had no money to buy jerseys. Also integral to JRB’s success have been the Rotary Club, which helped it build a fund to pay for participants who can’t afford the registration fees, and former University of Manitoba women’s basketball coach Pam Danis.

“Without her it would not have seen its second season,” Donovan says. “She made us feel like a part of the Bison family and the basketball community in Manitoba. She introduced us to clubs, tournaments, coaches and trainers that we never would have found and had the pleasure of having their expertise handed down to us had it not been for her.

She helped make our JRB program what it is. Thompson has really embraced basketball over the past seven years, and as coach Pam said after seeing the results from the Manitoba club basketball championships, basketball is alive in the North.’”

Editorial

Plenty of good to go around Newspapers and the media in general are often accused of focusing too much on the negative and in an industry where maxims like “if it bleeds, it leads” are among the guiding principles, the accusation is quite often true.

Not that it’s the fault of the media; there’s a lot of bad in the world and the job of journalists is to report what happens.

That said, there’s a lot of good in the world, too, and that world includes Thompson. As this week’s newspaper shows, there’s plenty to be proud of in the Nickel City, including a mine rescue team that’s the best in the province for the second year in a row, a girls’ basketball program that’s been developing the sport in the north for the

past seven years and a Scout who’s been recognized with a national awards, as well as a dancer and a couple of lacrosse players who’ve taken their skills beyond the borders of their hometown to display to a broader audience. And the truth is, there are other good news stories that never make the newspaper happening every day.

Highlighting positive accomplishments doesn’t diminish the fact that there are still plenty of areas in need of improvement in Thompson, but it does help to give people a more balanced perspective. Cities are human creations and, like all human creations, there’s good and bad in all of them.

Still, it’s nice when the good parts shine through.

A good time had at Halls’ golden anniversary party

ongratulations to Jan and Wayne Hall on their big 5-0!

When deciding how they wanted to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, Jan and Wayne chose to be around their family and friends and threw a big party at the beautiful Riverview Lodge. I was lucky enough to be invited.

What do you get a couple that’s been together for 50 years? The answer was nothing. They insisted no gifts and no cost to any of their guests to attend their celebration. Furthermore Jan, well known for her beautiful talents, had a table of her amazing art

that she gave away during the night. Everyone was given a free ticket and it was winner’s choice. I believe she had about a dozen amazing art pieces to choose from and made many people happy. My number wasn’t called, but had it been I was going to try to get the loon she had painted and give it to Ralph Dyke, who was eyeing it up from the moment he walked in the door. About the sixth number called was Ralph’s and luckily he was able to get the loon.

Delicious food and stories told were among some of the memorable moments of the party for me. When asked to share any favourite stories I decided to tell my favourite Wayne Hall experience. About 15 years ago, I organized a fundraising social to help raise money for the personal care home to be built. I asked if anybody in the room was at that fundraiser and remembered Wayne and I singing. Colleen Smook remembered and I kid you not, Wayne was amazing! Wayne Hall was the chair of the fundraising committee and we decided to

sing a karaoke song together. We chose a John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John duo. I was shocked when Wayne took the microphone!

He was amazing! My eyes grew big and a lump in my throat swelled as I knew my turn was coming and I didn’t want to embarrass him. I belted it out with everything I could. We had so much fun with fans waving lights in front of the stage, and when the song was over I was flabbergasted. As we hugged, I told Wayne, since we hadn’t practised, that I had no idea he could actually sing! About a week later he came to visit me at my job at the radio station and said, “You do know I can’t sing.”

Ummm, are you kidding me, Wayne, you rocked it!

He said, “Well, the DJ and I had it all set up. When it was your turn to sing it was you, but when it was my turn to sing it was really John Travolta and I just lip-synced.”

We had such a good laugh.

He got me good!

Wayne had some storytelling of his own to share with us, letting us in on a little of his life with Jan. One such story was about Jan’s

Wayne then introduced her brother who presented Jan with a new doll, head fully attached. I also enjoyed browsing through their old photo albums and reading up on a little Jan and Wayne history.

Volker style suggested a hat be passed around to collect money that the happy couple could donate to their favourite charity. Close to $600 was raised quickly which the Halls just as quickly turned over to Jennifer and Ralph for Rotary Park, which is literally really close to home and also close to their hearts.

Thompson is lucky to

have such a wonderful couple that does so much for our community. Thanks for the fun night and I especially enjoyed the end of the night when the place was locked up and we were all outside saying good night to each other and noticed my husband was missing. Leave it to Brian to be left inside in the bathroom.

Walking ‘The High Street’

BY DANIEL MCSWEENEY The other day I heard talk about what’s happening “on the High Street.” I discovered it wasn’t about our High Street in Solihull; rather business conditions in the U.K. retail sector, generally known as “the high street.” From all indications, “The High Street” is rather “low” in these tough economic times. Sales are in the dumps and some retail giants are hanging on by their fingernails. One big U.K. retailer predicts 2016 will be like “walking up a down escalator” while fighting to stay on the same step.

On the other hand, High Streets are real streets, still reasonably vibrant in spite of the pinch of hard times.

Pretty much every U.K. city and town has a High Street.

In fact, it’s the most popular street name in the U.K., followed by Station Road, Main Street and Park Road. At the local level, “the high street” is a town’s main shopping area. Its “high” reference suggests not topographic elevation; rather “high rank and excellence,” qualities merchants obviously like to link with their products and services.

Strangely enough, it is not where the really, really rich shop. They do most of their shopping at places like Selfridge’s on Oxford Street

and Harrods on Brompton Avenue in London. It’s not places we frequent, but I suspect Paul McCartney and Rupert Murdoch do. I wouldn’t be surprised though if their wives sometimes send them over to High Street convenience stores for milk and bread when the hired hands are sunning on the beach in Brighton. I wouldn’t hold my breath watching for them; but then they too just might have to nip down to the High Street with the rest of us.

Most High Streets are unlike any shopping districts in Canada. They offer an experience “so English” that they can’t be duplicated.

Our High Street is particularly nice, a relaxing road free of vehicular traffic. On weekends, there are little booths selling everything from sausages and baked goods to balloons and batteries. Flower vendors walk the street and musicians strum their guitars and beat their drums providing a lively High Street soundtrack.

And of course, like everywhere, there is the ring of British accents, a brash “Oy” now and again, or softer and more refined English banter.

Perhaps though it’s the architecture that makes it so attractive. You can clearly see efforts to maintain “street character” have been successful. One of the most

remarkable structures is the old “Manor House” established on the High Street in 1495, just three years after Columbus discovered North America. It’s a wood framed Tudor-style dwelling, built during the Tudor period that lasted from 1485 to 1603.

Such buildings were made with timber framing and exterior walls of rain-resistant lime-washed “wattle and daub.” It’s a material similar to lath and plaster; a construction technique dating back 6,000 years or more.

Their appearance is quintessentially English.

In contrast, construction is underway on a nearby modern low-rise office structure with a café on the ground floor. Quite clearly, the developers have gone to great pains to ensure that it does not clash with nearby historic structures. In fact, they have created a grand mural on the construction site fence showing the finished product. It is done remarkably well, and you would think the new street addition is already in place. And while some people might not like what they see; I believe it will blend quite nicely into the character of the street, something I agree should be preserved.

The Internet age is admittedly transforming High Streets, changing the way

people shop and the goods they buy. High Streets now have more convenience stores, tattoo parlours, takeaways, betting shops and health clubs. These are businesses customers must actually visit. Over the last 10 years, banks, green grocers, pubs, video rentals, film developers and travel agencies have disappeared from High Streets. Some writers warn that the changes are bringing about the death of High Streets. I understand the concerns; but I believe it just means High streets are changing as the world changes.

I used to think that “High” Street had something to do with elevation. Certainly the Solihull High Street is not all that “high” though. On the other hand, it sits much higher than where we live in a gully just off the Church Hill Road. I imagine blokes in times long past realized that building town centres in low-lying areas that might flood was perhaps not the best of ideas.

I mentioned about how the super rich do most of their shopping at Selfridges and Harrods. While we have not been to Harrod’s, we did wander through Selfridge’s on Oxford Street. During our visit, we spotted a nifty little denim jacket. Perhaps we could pick it up for a snip!

Therefore we’ll stick to shopping the High Street in Solihull. And if Sir Paul is there picking out a bargain t-shirt or socks, I’ll invite him to Solihull so he can have coffee at “Canada Dan’s” favourite coffee shop on The High Street.

The 737 Northern Pride Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron hosted it 53rdannual ceremonial review on the evening of May 16, wrapping up the group’s activities for the 2015-16 season. Thompson’s Air Cadets put on a formal parade display for the audience and officers, and following inspection were awarded with a variety of accolades earned throughout the year. Receiving top awards that evening were Cpl. Meuse (Top Junior Cadet), Fsgt. Magistad (Top Senior Cadet), and WO2 Dew, who received the Lord Strathcona Trust Medal, the highest physical and military training award achievable by a Canadian Cadet.

Capt. Martin Murphy, 737’s commanding officer, offered words of congratulations and encouragement, both for members of 737 and for the cadet program as a whole. But along with congratulations and praise for the program, Murphy was clearly conscious of the program’s declining numbers. “I’m ending my address with a challenge to you: to get the word out about what the cadets program has offered you, to talk to your friends, and the future will look very bright for

the 737squadron.”

Vale’s vice-president of Manitoba Operations Mark Scott was this year’s reviewing officer, “It strikes me in learning about the cadets program that there are many similarities btween your team, and our team at Vale Manitoba Operations. Excellence is built on core values, and our actions, not our words, define who we are. In all of our dealings, we want to be seen as honest, trustworthy, caring, courageous, fair and respectful, and I’m sure those are all values that our cadets here tonight have heard repeated throughout your training. The specific words may vary, but the

principles are the same and these are the values on which you will rely in school, in service or in life.” Scott thanked all of the Vale employees who contributed their time to making the cadets a reality every year, including Murphy, civilian instructor Brett Hanson, and administration officer Lindsay Bygnes.

At the end of the evening, cadets set up educational displays for parents surrounding activities and historical aspects of the cadets program put together by the cadets themselves, while the main hall became a rifle range for parents to test out the program’s air rifles.

CEDF showcases financial opportunities for northern entrepreneurs

Communities Economic Development Fund hosted its second annual Developer’s Forum April 27-28, providing both workshops for northerners already engaged in the business world, as well as giving lenders, advisors, and potential business partners the opportunity to introduce their services.

Many of the organizations came with offerings tailored to enterprising northern residents, and in particular, specialized loans for aboriginal entrepreneurs were a significant portion of programs offered. Jim Parks, with the Business Development Bank of Canada, presented the group’s Growth Capital for Aboriginal Business (GCAB) loan, which offered up to $100,000 for entrepreneurs who selfidentify as aboriginal. The loan featured a unique rebate option for loans in good standing, where a portion of the interest would be returned in the form of a donation to a local organization or charity. “We know that giving back to the community is big in the aboriginal community, and that’s why we included it,” Parks noted.

“This is the only program that has that feature.”

Shaun Hampton and Erica McDonald were also present to outline services provided by the Louis Riel Development Fund and the Métis Economic Development Fund. The LRCC, along with more conventional loans, also offered a non-repayable grant of up to $99,999, through the Business Equity Contribution Fund. The fund would cover a portion of a businesses capital and operating, marketing, and business supports for qualifying business models. However, businesses taking advantage of the loan will be subject to a three-year “control period”, where detailed financial and business reports are expected to be provided. Should a business not remain in business for those three years, a portion of the grant becomes repayable.

For more experienced business owners, the closely affiliated Métis Economic Development Fund provides equity loans of up to $500,000 in capital for start-up costs, mergers, and expansion, in exchange for a minority partnership of up to 35 per cent controlled by MEDF over a determined period of time. As recovery of funds is dependent on business success, equity loans from MEDF require a more experienced management team to qualify.

Both the LRCC and

MEDF programs require a controlling share of the company to be owned by a Métis, Inuit, or non-status aboriginal individual as proven by genealogy or registration, and require the borrower to have accumulated 10 per cent of the total project cost in non-borrowed funds. Not all businesses are eligible, either: neither program is intended for businesses serving or selling alcohol, or VLT’s, nor are passive investments permitted.

Also presenting was Fabian Sanderson from The First Peoples Economic Growth Fund, a lender focused on forprofit businesses and job creation offering several programs for aboriginal entrepreneurs, including interest-free loans of up to $200,000 for up to 10 years. Much like the LRCC and the MEDF, majority ownership must be aboriginal, and “nefarious” businesses like alcohol or VLT’s don’t qualify.

Uniquely, FPF offered a specialized loan for natural resource development available for larger borrowers such as development corporations and industrial partners.

Communities Economic Development Fund was, of course, there to showcase its own program offerings, custom-tailored to northern residents. CEDF CEO Oswald Sawh presented broader programs such as substantial lines of credit for both equipment and property development, but also programs tailored to residents of the rural north, such as commercial fishing loans. CEDF also offers community development and business services, including specialized training and networking services to assist smallscale harvesters of nontimber forest products (such as wild foods and medicinal herbs).

A loan’s return on investment depends on the success of the business of course, and several groups offered extensive services to help new businesses succeed. At the centre was the province’s own Entrepreneurship Manitoba, an agency which positions itself as the go-to fixer for potential business owners in Manitoba. As Chantelle Winters puts it, “We want to be your first point of contact when you’re starting a business in Manitoba.” EMB’s primary offering are its business review services, where the agency will work with you and potential lending and investment partners to develop a business plan that meets the potential partner’s requirements.

EMB also offers prospective entrepreneurs a threeday business-planning

workshop that rapidly orients first-time startups to what Winter calls “the business side of running a business.”

EMB also offers resources like a market research librarian, that can help business owners access marketing information like financial reports and trends across the province, or their “Ask the Expert” professional consultation program, or the online Bizpal Manitoba page, which allows entrepreneurs to quickly look up the permits required for any potential venture.

EMB works in close collaboration with Futurpreneur Canada, a national organization designed to help young entrepreneurs (18-39) succeed in the small business market.

Spokesman Brad Hack noted that small business is a sector often underappreciated by the younger generation, despite making up 50 per cent of Canada’s GDP: “They’re a huge driver of our economy, and a lot of young people don’t realize that. They think they’re going to work for a big corporation, get a nice retirement package, and everything is going to be great. It doesn’t usually work like that.”

BDC also offers consultation services, from early business planning to later stage services like operational efficiency assessments and international expansion. BDC consulting partner Stace Gander provided a recent example of two Manitoban honey producers that he had helped to bring their products to international markets.

Shaheryar Qureshi, focusing on start-up themes such as community opportunities, start-up challenges and fundamentals, and capacity building.

Former Thompsonite Jennifer Saunders set a new record for the most women’s singles national racquetball titles at the Canadian racquetball championships in Burlington, Ont. May 28, coming from behind in the second game of the women’s open final to win her ninth singles championship.

Saunders defeated Michèle Morissette of BaieComeau, Que. 15-10, 17-15 in the final, taking five of the last six points in the second game after trailing 12-14 and in danger of having the match go to a tiebreaker.

Saunders held the previous record for the most women’s singles title with eight. This championship, combined with her 11 national women’s doubles

titles, gives her a record 20 national titles combined.

Last week she and her partner Danielle Drury of Saskatoon lost in the women’s doubles final. The two won their first national doubles title together in 2015.

“I remember feeling that I was ready,” Saunders said in a Racquetball Canada press release, recalling her first singles title in 2002, “that it was my turn.

I didn’t ever imagine that I would win nine. I thought I might win one or two because I know how hard it is to win this event.”

Saunders was the singles champion again in 2005 and then won it six times in a row rom 2009 to 2014 before finishing as the runner-up in 2015.

She was a member of the doubles champion team from 2003 to 2007 and 2011 to 2015, with an-

“Each win is special in it’s own way,” Saunders said. “When I reached eight wins, it was special

because it was the record setter. This one will be special because I was able to dig in and come back from behind.”

Thompson dancer taking talents to bigger stage as CFL cheerleader

A Thompson dancer will be displaying her moves to a much larger audience this summer and fall after landing a spot on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers cheer and dance team.

Danielle Spence, 21, who grew up taking dance classes in Thompson and has worked as an assistant in Kelly Waterman’s dance school and as a Diamond Dance Academy teacher, ďŹ rst got the idea of trying out for the squad in 2015 but couldn’t do it then because she was still in school studying law enforcement.

But this year, she gave it a shot and wound up earning a spot on the team. “I have a different background so I was really iffy and not too sure if I was going to make it,â€? Spence said from Winnipeg, where she moved in April after making the cheer team. “All my friends and my family were really supportive, saying, ‘Oh you know, you’re going to make it, you’re going to make it.’ I was like, ‘I don’t know that yet. I’m different.’ But it’s really great I got this opportunity on my ďŹ rst shot. It’s an amazing feeling.â€?

Spence, who was born in Brandon but lived in Thomp-

son since she was just a year old, got started in dance around the age of four when her mother enrolled her in jazz, tap dancing and ballet.

She quit for a couple of years around the age of six, spending the next couple of years concentrating on gymnastics until she hurt her back and returned to the dance oot. “It’s my actual passion and I just fell in love with it,â€?

Spence said. “I didn’t want to stop doing it. I think when I quit I really missed it.�

After getting back into it, she branched out into hiphop dance. “I just continued on from there and then after that I was an assistant for Kelly Waterman. I was a teacher at the the age of 15 doing hip-hop classes and I just pursued that basically.�

Having participated in dance competitions and conventions in Winnipeg, Toronto, Vancouver, Regina, Edmonton and Red Deer as a teenager, Spence loves the feeling of performing in front of a crowd, a feeling that intensiďŹ ed as she watched her students do that. “I love watching the kids doing that and I was just like, ‘Oh, wow, I really miss being onstage and performing in front of an audience,’ so I was trying to ďŹ gure out dif-

ferent ways how I can still do that,� Spence says. “I came across the Blue Bomber cheer team and it’s a dance and stunt team so I just looked up some YouTube videos, watching the girls dance and I was like, ‘Wow, that’s really interesting, you get to perform in front of a big audience, like a stadium, that’s amazing.’�

Spence relied on herself and the Internet to brush up her skills. “I looked on YouTube videos and I was just teaching myself other dances because I’ve always taught myself hip hop and that’s what the Blue Bomber cheer and dance team really perfects in so I tried teaching myself new choreography from different people on the Internet just to keep up with my dancing and then I just went for the tryouts and did my best,� she says.

She found out she made the team about a week later, receiving the news by email while she was at a dance competition with her students from Diamond Dance Academy. “I think that was the most exciting moment yet,� Spence said. “I was with my directors and all my students and my students’ parents. I just told them all. They were really

They really encouraged me to go and do this tryout so I’m lucky to have all that support back home.�

With lots of work ahead of her to get ready for the season, Spence says she’s looking forward to the preparation. “My coach was telling we’re going to have lots and lots of practice but I think I’m really up for that challenge,�

Spence says.

She’s also eagerly anticipating her ďŹ rst time out on the ďŹ eld at a football game. “I’m super excited to have my ďŹ rst experience in the stadium, just performing again,â€? she says, though she admits she doesn’t know a lot about football. “It’s hard to be a football fan, especially being in a hockey community up north,â€? Spence says. “I think learning about the CFL will be something different. I don’t know too much about it but

I think I’ll get right into it.�

Looking back on the journey that brought her to this point, Spence credits her mother as the source fo her success. “She’s always encouraged me and always been by my side and is always there for all my decisions and always supports me through everything,� Spence says. “I’m really grateful for that and if she wouldn’t have put me in dance class I don’t think I would be where I am today.�

Brothers’ lacrosse skills land them on same squad in Winnipeg

Evan Ritchie is following in his brother Taylor’s foosteps this year by becoming the second player from Thompson to suit up for the Manitoba Blizzard lacrosse club, which competes in the Tier I junior B circuit of the Rocky Mountain Junior Lacrosse League against teams from Saskatchewan and Alberta.

He does so alongside his older brother, who is in his

second season as a Blizzard player.

Evan wasn’t sure when he went down for tryouts if he would end up being selected for the team.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “Last year, they had a really good team.

They went to the finals in their league. I just watched them and I was pretty amazed last year. It was pretty impressive. I watched as many games as I could and just to be on the team it

was quite honouring. I feel like I had a good tryout but at the same time it was big news for me. I didn’t see that coming before I went into tryouts.”

The brothers didn’t get a chance to play much together on the first weekend of the season, as Taylor was penalized in the third period of the season opener and received a three-game suspension as a result.

“I’ve actually never played on a competitive team with my brother before,” Taylor said. “We played house league in Thompson together but this is our first year playing together on a tryout team. It’s been a lot of fun so far. I’m excited about it. It’s definitely a cool experience to play with your brother at this high of a level.”

Evan said his first game was about what he expected in terms of the speed and physical play.

“My first game I didn’t get a whole lot of shifts,” he said. “There were tons of penalties and there was lots of penalty-killing we had to do so I didn’t get on the floor a whole lot. The second game was a lot of fun; it was a real confidence-booster, more floor time.”

The Blizzard improved their season record to 5-4

with a pair of victories at home against the Saskatchewan Swat last weekend and Evan says he knows from their time together on R.D. Parker Collegiate’s field lacrosse team what it’s like playing with Taylor.

“Back then I probably wasn’t as open to advice but this year I’m more open to advice because I know it’s a tough league and he knows what he’s talking about so he’s pretty good for it,” Evan says. “He helps me out a lot and tells me what I’m doing good, what I’m doing not so good.”

Evan is looking forward to heading on the road with the team and says his experience as a hockey player in Thompson means he’s used to long bus trips, though the ones he embarks on with the Blizzard will be even longer, sometimes spanning two provinces.

“I heard you’re pretty busy most of the time, you don’t have a whole lot of time to relax but I feel like I can handle that,” he says.

“It’s good to go out of the province, do some different things. I’m looking forward to it. I’m not dreading it whatsoever.”

much. I’m more just worried about trying to play my own game. I don’t try to put a ton of pressure on myself in that sense.”

“They don’t see a whole lot of people coming out of Thompson playing lacrosse and I guess it’s good to show that we should be taken seriously and that lacrosse is also a sport in Thompson, not just hockey,” Evan says.

“I like to represent Thompson as well. I think we’re doing an all right job of that.”

Evan says he couldn’t have imagined himself playing lacrosse for a team in Winnipeg when he was playing the game growing up in Thompson.

“I wasn’t always one of the best players my age, that’s for sure, so I just spent a lot of time outside in my yard, just shooting around on the rebounder and stuff,” he recalls. “It helped me come a long way.

It’s pretty impressive. When we just joined the sport we kind of said, ‘Oh we’ll just try this out for a bit.’ We didn’t know much about it.

Now, look where it’s taken us. It’s taken us all over the country and into the states and everything like that so it’s definitely a big part of our lives that we didn’t see coming.”

The Ritchie brothers hope other Thompson lacrosse players take what they’ve learned to heart and realize that the game can taken them places they never imagined it would.

“There’s a lot of lacrosse players that are very good from Thompson but no one ever seems to get them to come out [for tryouts],” Evan says. “It’s a lot of opportunity, if you want to go do somethign with your life.

It’s awesome.”

RDPC wins zone track and field banner, will send many athletes to provincials

Thirty-one individual Trojans athletes and 14 relay teams qualified for provincials at the Zone 11 track and field championships in The Pas May 27-28, where R.D. Parker Collegiate won the banner as the team with the most overall points.

Three individual athletes from RDPC qualified first in three events each, including Jack Kennedy, who was first in the senior boys’ 100 metre, 200 metre and 400 metre races, and Adrianna Proulx, who finished first in the senior girls’ high jump, javelin and triple jump. In the junior varsity ranks, Hayley Jenkins finished first in the girls’ 800 metre, 1,500 metre and 3,000 metre races. Also qualifying for provincials in three events was Aub-

rey Queen, who was first in the senior girls’ 1,500 and 3,000 metre races and second in the 800 metres.

Dennita Cameron finished first in both the junior girls’ long jump and high jump, while Jonna McDonald was first in the junior girls’ discus and shotput.

Other doubles winners included Tyler Monias in the junior boys’ discus and shotput and Karly Kraychuk in the senior girls’ 400 metre and 800 metre races.

Nine athletes finished first in individual competitions, including Nathan Traverse-Smith, who was first in junior boys’ high jump and second in both the 100 and 200 metre races. Abbey Smith was first in the junior girls’ 100 metres and third in the long jump, the oppositve of Zoe O’Callaghan, who

was first in the senior girls’ long jump and third in the senior girls’ 100 metres.

Taylor Watson finished first in the junior girls’ 80 metre hurdles and also qualified for provincials in the multidiscipline tetrathlon event.

Ashley Williams was first in the junior girls’ 200 metres and second in the discus.

In the senior ranks, Caitlin Fennell finished first in the girls’ shotput and second in discus. Gabe Dy was first in the junior boys’ triple jump, while Jashan Sandhu was first in the senior boys triple jump and Magan Griffin was first in the junior girls’ triple jump.

Trojans who earned second-place finishes included Jules Cruda (second in senior boys’ high jump and third in senior boys’ triple jump), Eric Olson (second in seniro boys’ shotput and third in dis-

cus), Kerri-Ann Sweeny (second in senior girls’ 100 metres) and Blair Bodie (second in senior girls’ long jump).

Individual athletes finishing third in their events to qualify for provincials included Jarrett Conley in junior boys’ 400, 800 and 3,000 metre races, along with Kurt Young, who was third in the senior boys’ 800 and 3,000 metre races.

Brayden Dudley was third in the senior boys’ long jump, Jamie Verhaeghe was third in the senior girls’ 1,500 metres, Kyle Dumas-Olson was third in junior boys’ discus, Jenna Horvath was third in junior girls’ 200 metre, Tyson Mosiondz was third in the senior boys 200 metre, Gordon Reuther was third in the senior boys’ javelin and Kali Cummings was third in the senior girls’ triple jump.

Cree language on city signs a possibility

The City of Thompson’s planning and development department will be considering the inclusion of the Cree language on city signs during its current re-branding initiative, director of city planning and development Matthew Boscariol says.

Cree has made its appearances in the city before: the circular signs which once welcomed motorists driving into Thompson, both from Highway 391 and Highway 6, once included both “Welcome” and “Tansi,” as does the sign welcoming motorists downtown at the intersection of Mystery Lake Road and Nelson Road.

Many Thompson streets have Cree names, such as Manasan, meaning, essentially, “beautiful place.”

But these names are written solely in Roman characters, and Thompson resident Hilda Rose-Fitzner noted that only three public buildings currently featured signs written in Cree syllabics: the liquor store, the RCMP station and the hospital.

“What kind of message does that send?” she asked.

Rose-Fitzner floated the idea on the community Facebook page Thompson

Talk. The gesture would be both a symbolic and a practical one: Thompson rests within Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation’s traditional territory, a legacy that Rose-Fitzner believes is important to honour. But she also notes that while few Thompsonites may live their lives in Cree, there are many in surrounding communities for whom Cree is a first language. “If you step into Nelson House, you’re going to hear Cree first. When things happen in town, they want to come here. By acknowledging Cree people and putting up a few signs here and there, they’re going to feel more welcome here.”

Rose-Fitzner particularly spoke of youth: while members of the older generations of northern First Nations speak primarily Cree, many aboriginal millenials have become isolated from the language, increasing the sense of isolation and otherness which draws wayward youth to crime, substance abuse and suicide. She recalled discussions surrounding the development of student housing for University College of the North, where it was understood that the majority of tenants would be aboriginal:

“I was seeing people blame the indigenous for all the crime and gang activity in the city. My message was, if you want to get rid of gang activity, you have to include the people.”

Cree signage, RoseFitzner says, would go a long way in making Cree residents and visitors feel at home and welcome. She notes that the impact of the gesture can’t be underestimated, citing the popularity of Wapanohk Community School with indigenous parents: “Any indigenous people moving into town, they want their kids in that school. You can really see a lot of our indigenous culture there.”

A significant criticism of Rose-Fitzner’s original suggestion was cost, with many Thompsonites concerned on the impact such projects might have on the city mill rate. But Boscariol noted that the suggestion comes at an ideal time, when major changes in the city’s brand mean that a significant portion of signage will have to be replaced one way or another: “Grants aside,” he notes, “the city is going through a re-branding strategy to ensure that all signage gets phased in, and with that in mind, we’d be able to

put the language there as we phase it in.” Street signs, he noted, could also be phased in at minimal cost, as they must be regularly replaced due to wear and tear regardless of any design changes.

The concept remains in its early stages, and has not been submitted for any formal consideration by the city’s development review committee. Nonetheless, Boscariol assures the idea will be reviewed in due time.

“We’re so embedded in the cultural practices of the Cree here, that I just see it as a natural thing to do.”

Beyond the municipal government, Rose-Fitzner also challenges local businesses to adopt multilingual signage, citing the economic contribution of indigenous shoppers from outlying communities. “I would like to be able to be able to total the amount of money that comes through our malls on a child tax credit day. The TEDWG process recognizes Thompson and region, because they recognize that businesses can thrive here because of the outlying region.” RoseFitzner suggested that even a sign reading “Welcome,” “Tansi” and Cree syllabics would be a “warm thank you to the people.”

Municipal leaders from Colombia and Peru will visit Thompson May 31 and June 1 to learn about the city’s strategic plans, industry and culture.

The tour is part of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Sustainable and Inclusive Communities in Latin America (CISAL) program, which focuses on building resilient and sustainable communities and building stronger local governmennts in areas with mining activity. The suspects can not be named under the terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act because they are under the age of 18.

“Our officers have been dedicating their efforts to locate the two suspects since the incident.” said Manitoba RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Bert Paquet in a press release.
