The 2018 Manitoba Games went out in style March 10 with an elaborate closing ceremony that paid tribute to the athletes, coaches, volunteers and organizers who made this seven-day multi-sport event possible.

Much like the opening ceremonies that took place March 4, Saturday’s festivities got underway at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena and featured the same kind of spectacle from the previous week.

Once again, the athletes and coaches were put front and centre at the beginning of the ceremony, as they marched onto the ice wearing colours that represented six different regions of the province.

Members of Team Winnipeg Gold were in particularly high spirits that afternoon, since they finished the games at the top of the medal standings with 47 gold, 56 silver and 53 bronze.

Because of their accomplishments, Team Winnipeg Gold was presented with the J.A. Ernst Spirit of the Games trophy for showcasing the greatest level of enthusiasm throughout the week.

Meanwhile, Team North – which landed in last place with seven gold, eight silver and six bronze medals –was given the Larry Desjardins Sportmanship Award for their continued display of respect before, during and after the competition.

However, most of the dignitaries who took to the stage to provide closing remarks reminded all these athletes that trophies and medals are secondary to the real driving force behind the games: showcasing the spirit of competition.

Thompson games set the bar high for next host, says Sport Manitoba CEO

The host society had just over a year to complete preparations, but they achieved the goal of putting on a memorable event, Sport Manitoba CEO Jeff Hnatiuk said on the last day of the 2018 Manitoba Games in Thompson.

“Everybody had an absolutely outstanding time,” Hnatiuk told a gathering of sponsors, organizers and volunteers just before the closing ceremonies March 10.

He also said that Thompson had set the standard for the 2020 Manitoba Games – a summer edition – in Dauphin, whose host society co-chairs were at the reception.

“I don’t want to say that the bar’s been set real high here, guys, but it has,” said Hnatiuk.

Thompson host society cochair Sandra Ross-Hitch said the success of the games was due to about 800 volunteers.

“They have made us look good,” she said. “We were in it 100 per cent and so was Thompson and for that we are ever so grateful to you.”

Volunteer recruitment and administration chair Samantha Leahy said that many volunteers did more than they had signed up for, sticking around for extra shifts and helping out in other areas.

“All our feedback’s been really good and the athletes have been thanking volunteers, which is nice to see too,” said Leahy, who previously participated in the Manitoba Games as a ringette player in The Pas in 2002.

The other host society cochair, Murray Kissick, said donations were still coming in on the last day of the games and thanked everyone involved once more.

“We just happened to be at the top,” said Kissick. “It was everybody below us that did the job.”

Former mayor Tim Johnston, who served on the host society with the Friends of the Games to drum up sponsorships, said the event shone a positive spotlight on the Hub of the North.

“One of the things I keep hearing from people is how impressed they are with

Thompson, not just the facilities but the people and more importantly, how that changed their perception of this community. Everyone deserves a hand for showcasing that and showing everybody what great places Thompson and Northern Manitoba are.”

Ed Broome of Brandon, who came to watch his grandson play hockey in the games, had plenty of priase for the Hub of the North.

“I found that the people are very friendly, the games were excellent, it was really run well but the most memorable part of the whole trip was going to one of your pizza restaurants called Tom’s,” said Broome. “It was outstanding.”

Bobbi Montean, who was a volunteer when the games were last held in Thompson in 1994, said Thompson proved it should have been selected as more than a last-minute replacement.

“We submitted a bid before and it was refused and we wanted to do this again and we proved it. Absolutely.”

The proof is in the pudding To the Editor: I am writing in response to an article in your newspaper on Feb. 28, specifically, the remarks made by Mr. Kong about his efforts to enhance Indigenous employment with Canadian National railway.

Mr. Kong, contrary to your comments, the skilled and dedicated Indigenous employees of Canadian National were instrumental in the building of the Bayline and for seven decades repaired and maintained the track from The Pas to Churchill.

By retiring its most skilled employees and reducing the workforce by about 50 per cent, OmniTrax ran the Bayline into the ground, not the Indigenous workforce, as you seem to suggest.

What this region needs is not more bureaucrats collecting fat paycheques but people who recognize the contribution of our First Canadians to the success of the transportation industry and thus allowing the local population to manage their own affairs – case in point, Keewatin Railroad, The Pas, Manitoba.

Games organizers and volunteers deserve recognition for a job well done W

hen it comes to attracting major Manitoba sporting events to Thompson, the script has been pretty much established.

The organizers work and work and work and work some more until finally they can’t be ignored any longer and the powers that be throw them a bone, saying, ”OK, you’ve worn us down. Just host this thing and stop harrassing us.”

That’s what it took for the late Red Sangster to finally convince Baseball Manitoba to let Thompson host the senior men’s provincials in 2012, likely with some help from former Thompson baseball coach Faron

Asham, who would go on to serve the association as president and in other executive roles.

That was the same year that the girls’ AAA high school provincials were played at R.D. Parker Collegiate. A few years earlier, it was the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League AllStar Game. Three years ago, Rogers Hometown Hockey rolled into town for a weekend full of festivities that Thompson turned out for in a big way.

Apart from the last of those, the common theme was that it took a lot of convincing to get those events here in the first place. But once they were over, the participants all said the same thing: Thompson

was a great host, the event was amazing, and why didn’t we do this sooner?

Maybe now that the city has stepped up and put on, not a flawless, but a definitely successful edition of the Manitoba Games, in the future it won’t take so much convincing to attract the next big event.

There were plenty of reasons early on to doubt whether Thompson’s games would come off as well as they did. There was less time to prepare, some venues – the Norplex Pool in particular – had some issues that needed to be straightened out, and there were extra events added, including swimming and downhill skiing as

well as speed skating, which was part of the Manitoba Games for the first time ever last week. While an event the size of the games was definitely welcome this year, which will see Vale Manitoba Operations shut down its smelter and refinery after having suspended mining operations at the Birchtree Mine late last year, it wasn’t necessarily clear early on in the process if Thompson would have more success rounding up volunteers than Virden, which bowed out of hosing the games late in 2016 because their host society didn’t think they could pull the games off successfully.

But as anybody in

Thompson knows, a lot of things are given low priority here until it becomes clear that help is really needed, and when that call goes out, people respond, as they did to successfully host these games.

And while those volunteers – the tired but happy looking people in blue shirts you saw throughout the Thompson Regional Community Centre and at the pool and cross country ski trails and Mystery Mountain Winter Park and schools hosting events or serving as dormitories for athletes – were the backbone of the games during the seven days that they were on, that effort only represents the tip of the iceberg.

Thompson’s Manitoba Games co-ordinator Dave Martin said on the morning of the last day of the games that the whole thing was a bit like Christmas – a huge buildup of anticipation and then it’s over almost before you realize it. But the fact that, like a good Christmas, the payoff justified the lead up, is thanks to more than 800 people who freely donated their time to give athletes from near and far an experience they won’t soon forget.

Hopefully, the 2018 Manitoba Games have proved something once and for all: if there’s one things Thompson knows how to do, it’s putting on a memorable party.

Gold and two silvers for Team North in individual badminton events

Team North came through with three Manitoba Games medals on the badminton court March 8, with Avery Dick and Easton George of Grand Rapids winning the gold in the under-17 boys’ doubles event.

“I think we played pretty well,” said George, 15. “We gave it our all and came in first. Our hardest game probably would have been the finals but it wasn’t that hard. We played well together right off the bat. We were cooperating well.”

It was the first time for the pair to play doubles together, but Dick said the key to Grand Rapids players’ badminton success is practice.

“We practise every lunch and at six in the evenings,” said Dick, whose next competition will be tryouts for the Western Canada games.

George closed the day with a singles win in the team badminton event.

“That was probably the hardest match I played this tournament so I was happy to clutch the win,” he said.

Thirteen-year-olds Louanne Wilson from Grand Rapids and Kyleigh Henderson from Wabowden just met but hit it off as friends and doubles partners, winning silver in the U15 girls’ event.

“It was very intense. It was really close,” Wilson said about the final, a three-set affair in which the biggest margin of victory for either side was four points.

Losing that game didn’t sit well with Henderson initially.

“At first I felt pretty mad, I don’t know why, but after a while I just cooled off and I’m pretty proud that we got silver at least because this is my first big badminton tournament,” Henderson said. “It was a good experience.

We only lost by a few points and that’s pretty good.”

U15 boys’ doubles silver medallists Logan Baker and C.J. Halcrow, both 13, have played doubles together once before a long time ago but didn’t have any trouble working together though they wish the final game had gone differently.

“It’s hard to lose in the finals because you’re playing for the one thing you want,” said Halcrow.

“We were pretty happy to be working as a team,” said Baker, who called the silver “a nice medal to hang up.”

After the individual events, the athletes were still busy competing in the team badminton event, where different regions face off against each other in boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles and mixed doubles.

“You have to win three events to move on,” said Halcrow, who said he played in an event like that before at the Western Canada team championships.

“It was awesome and hard,” he said.

Team North finished fifth in the under-15 team competition and fourth in the under-17 team competition.

Team North captures truckload of medals in swimming events

After a slow start to the 2018 Manitoba Winter Games, Team North finally started to find its footing during a series of swimming events at the Norplex Pool March 8.

Throughout the course of a single evening, the Norman region managed to make a big impression by securing six medals – three gold and three bronze – increasing Team North’s overall medal count from three to nine.

Over half of this medal haul came courtesy of Jarvis Gibb, an athlete from The Pas who scored three gold medals in the 100-metre individual medley, 50m breaststroke and the 50m freestyle for youth (aged 13–14).

Gibb also helped lead the 200m mixed youth relay team to a bronze medal victory, alongside fellow athletes Connor Brown, Caitlin McDonald and Paige Kirby-McDougall.

The rest of the hardware was captured by Creighton athlete Jordan Gorrell, who scored a pair of bronze medals in the 100m backstroke and 100m individual medley events for junior males (aged 11–12).

While swimming coach Nick Popiel said that his athletes definitely exceeded expectations in a lot of their races, he was really impressed with their ability to roll with the punches and get through the over 40 swimming events that took place on March 8.

“It’s been an extremely long day,” he told the Thompson Citizen once the competition wrapped up. “They were up at 6 a.m. and, in total, 10 hours at the pool, with no time to really rest. Even eating was really rushed.

So we really fought hard and persevered.”

Popiel went on to say that this result is particularly special to athletes participating in this kind of sporting event for the first time “It’s the first time that swimming has been a part of the winter games, and it’s kind of a welcome addition. It’s definitely a mid-season highlight for these guys.”

Gibb would go on to win another pair of gold medals in the 100m breaststroke and 50m butterfly, and silver medal in the 200m mixed medley relay on March 9. This made him Team North’s most decorated athlete in the 2018 Manitoba Winter Games by a long shot, adding to his collection of Manitoba Games medals that includes two silver and five bronze from the 2016 summer Manitoba Games, and giving him the honour of carrying Team North’s flag in the closing ceremonies March 10.

Northern wrestling crew impresses in Manitoba Games debut

Athletes representing the north in the 2018 Manitoba Games walked away from Friday’s wrestling events with half-a-dozen medals – four silver and two bronze.

Thanks to the efforts of athletes like Fahed Ahmad, Heidi Halcrow, Liddell Blacksmith and Michelle Omand, the group also helped Team North break the 20-medal threshold in the standings.

While the group’s opponents at the Bill Comaskey Wellness Centre weren’t as formidable as they could have been due to low numbers, their performance was still impressive considering the fact that March 9 marked the first time that most of them wrestled competitively.

The majority of the team hails from Cross Lake and started wrestling less than a

year ago, said coach Kendall Robinson. Even though most of them picked up the sport rather quickly, Robinson said the idea of debuting their skills at the biggest multisport event in the province did pose a bit of an obstacle.

“They were overwhelmed, they were scared and they were excited,” he said. “They were mostly nervous this morning before the competition. After their first match they started getting used to it.”

Kassia Ross definitely got over this mental barrier, since she eventually went on to win bronze in the 50 kg weight category. Ross told the Thompson Citizen that she is looking forward to honing her skills in future competitions.

“It was fun and exciting watching our teammates

wrestle,” said Ross. “Whenever we have another tournament we’ll know what we can do.”

In the end, Robinson said he was extremely impressed with his team’s performance on Friday, which bodes well for the future of freestyle wrestling in Northern Manitoba.

“Today they did an awesome job. It was incredible,” said Robinson. “After their performance today I’m very proud of them. I’m very happy that they came and they competed in provincial games like this.”

According to Robinson, the team is already eyeing their next official wrestling competition, since they hope to attend a provincial championship tournament in Winnipeg on March 17.

Skate Thompson ďŹ gure skaters Amy Shier and Megan Szabo ďŹ nished ďŹ fth and 14th, respectively, in their categories at the 2018 Manitoba Games on familiar ice at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

Shier, competing in the juvenile female category, earned 20.05 points for her ďŹ rst free skate March 8, ďŹ fth-best of all the competitors, and improved that two 20.63 in the second skate March 9, which was once again ďŹ fth. The only other skaters to record scores of 20 or better in both their skates were the four who ďŹ nished ahead of her in the ďŹ nal standings.

In the pre-novice female division, Szabo scored only 15.66 points in the short program March 8, second from the bottom, but performed much better in the free skate March 9, earning 34.61 points, 10th-best among all the competitors.

Team North’s under-15 female curling squad of Brooke Graham, Kamryn Brown, Sienna English and Gabby Fisher fell one win short of a medal at the 2018 Manitoba

Games March 10, losing 6-3 to Winnipeg Gold in the bronze medal match and winding up fourth.

Graham and Brown are from Thompson while English and Fisher live in Gillam and the newly formed team fell 8-2 to Team

Winnipeg Blue, Winnipeg Gold and Team South 2 took the under-15 male curling medals at the 2018 Manitoba Games.

Myles Campbell and Mason Campbell of Thompson were half of Team North’s male under-15 curling foursome, which also included two members from Gillam and finished seventh at the 2-18 Manitoba Games.

East, the eventual champions, in the semifinals after going 2-1 in round-robin play to wind up second in their pool.

Team North a shootout goal away from female hockey bronze medal

Team North went as far as it possibly could in the 2018 Manitoba Games female hockey competition without earning a medal, falling 3-2 to Winnipeg Gold in the bronze medal match at the Gordon Beard Arena March 10 in the sixth round of the shootout after 10 minutes of overtime and three periods before that failed to determine a winner.

Taylor Coward’s goal on North netminder Jillian Szabo proved to be the winner, as Winnipeg Gold’s goalie Julianna Thompson stopped Joie Simon’s final attempt for the North to give her team the medal. Team North had started off the shootout with a goal from Ashley Keller on the very first shot but couldn’t solve Thomson after that, while Rorie Ringor’s do-or-die attempt in the third round got past Szabo to keep Winnipeg Gold’s medal hopes alive.

City councillor Kathy Valentino went even further by saying that watching these athletes perform over the past week has inspired her and other Thompsonites to keep fighting and get through the rough financial times that they are currently embroiled in.

“We watched you fall down, we watched you get

up, we watched you win some medals, we watched some of you not win some medals, but you’ve inspired us to get up and work hard for what we believe in.”

Sport Manitoba CEO Jeff Hnatiuk also took the time to remind everybody in attendance that this was the largest winter games that have ever been held in Manitoba, with over 1,400 participants and 10,000 spectators watching throughout the week.

Thompson’s unique and multi-faceted facilities also allowed Sport Manitoba to include several athletic events that weren’t seen in some previous winter editions of the games, including swimming, alpine skiing, and speed skating, which was featured for the

first time.

Hnatiuk went on to say that this year’s event was even more impressive when one considers the fact that the host society was saddled with the shortest-ever planning period to put on a games. Thompson took over hosting duties in January 2017 after Virden dropped out due to low volunteer participation.

However, host society co-chairs Murray Kissick and Sandra Ross-Hitch managed to attract around 800 volunteers, who were mentioned countless times throughout the closing ceremonies.

“It didn’t matter what role you played,” said Valentino “It was those Thursday night meetings for the last 14 months, or

if you were the people that scooped out my scrambled eggs this morning at food services … you made a difference and the City of Thompson couldn’t have done this without you.”

The ceremony closed with a reminder of future large scale sporting events to come.

Once the Manitoba Winter Games flag was finally lowered it was handed off to the host society co-chairs of the upcoming Manitoba Games in Dauphin Aug. 9–15, 2020.

Many of the athletes who participated in this year’s games have also been identified for Team Manitoba, and will go on to compete in the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta starting next February.

The Manager of Finance and Operations will ensure the agency has systems in place to plan, monitor, control and evaluate agency operations.

The Manager of Finance and Operations will work with the management team to ensure that all financial management aspects of agency services meet the requirements of provincial legislation and standards, as well as the agency’s policies and procedures. R.D. Parker Collegiate’s junior girls’ basketball team lost 45-35 to the College Pierre Elliot Trudeau Canadiennes in the bronze medal game to finish fourth at the junior varsity AAA basketball championships in Winnipeg March 10.

Emma Tomchuk of the Trojans was named one of the tournament all-stars.

The Trojans opened with a 51-32 win over the Linden Christian Wings and then fell 48-32 to the Lorette Collegiate Scorpions in the semifinals.

In the boys’ tournament in Stonewall, RDPC lost their opener 71-56 to the St. James Collegiate Jimmies and then dropped a 69-62 decision to Lorette in the first round of consolation playoffs.

An Oxford House man is facing 35 criminal charges after police responded to reports of an armed male threatening to shoot someone March 5, according to Manitoba RCMP social media accounts.

Police detained the man at his residence where there were several children and seized four guns, ammunition and magazines.

Provide elements in which services have a particular responsibility to take the lead in securing effective development, delivery and review of services.
