Orinda: A Great Place to Live, Learn and Grow

R

ecently ranked among the ten best places in California to live and learn by GreatSchools.org, Orinda values the top-notch education that its children receive. And in Orinda, education is not just for kids — amidst the city’s highly educated adult population thrives a commitment to learning as a lifelong endeavor. Our Schools The Orinda Union School District (OUSD) is composed of four elementary schools — Del Rey, Glorietta, Sleepy Hollow, and Wagner Ranch — along with Orinda Intermediate School. Miramonte High School is part of the Acalanes Union High School District, which serves Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette and parts of Walnut Creek. All of Orinda’s elementary schools and Miramonte High School have recently been recognized as California Distinguished Schools. Young students may do Math in the Garden, experience Pioneer Days firsthand, or walk in a Lunar New Year parade. As they get older, they will Take Action in 7th grade science, learn to give back by participating in Lamorinda’s flagship middle school community service program — Others First– and celebrate differences during Diverse Abilities Awareness Week. By the time they graduate from high school, Orinda’s students will not only be thoroughly prepared for college but are likely to be top-notch public speakers, athletes, and performers. Orinda’s public schools are supported in part by parents, businesses and community organizations who donate generously to the Educational Foundation of Orinda, which last year distributed $1.5 million in funding for educational and enrichment programs, bridging the gap where state funding leaves off. The district also has active school-site Parent Clubs, which expect to collectively provide about $2 million this year for programs, services, and personnel. Orinda is also home to two private schools — the college-preparatory Orinda Academy serving grades 6-12, and Holden High School, which offers an alternative education program.
