History

fter California’s statehood, the Orinda area was a rich ranchland and its natural beauty made it a retreat for city dwellers from Oakland and San Francisco. Joaquin Moraga and Thomas Wagner were early settlers and many weekend picnickers from the large cities enjoyed the tranquil hills of Orinda. In the 1920’s Edward de Laveaga built the Orinda Country Club and the first organized development of homes in Orinda. The completion of the Caldecott Tunnel in 1937 brought in many new residents who could now commute comfortably to San Francisco. The construction of the Orinda Theatre in 1941 established the “Crossroads” as a center for business in Orinda. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Orinda added many businesses; including real estate agencies, multiple supermarkets, service stations, and restaurants, as well as legal and medical professionals. Orinda continued to grow steadily, but remained an unincorporated suburb until 1985 when a vote by the residents created the City of Orinda.

Important Numbers City of Orinda

five-member City Council governs the city, and elections are held biannually. Council members serve four-year, non-paid terms on a staggered basis. Each year, the Council selects one of its members to serve as mayor. The City Manager is the chief executive officer and is responsible for the administration of city business. City Council meetings are normally held on the first the third Tuesday of each month, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Auditorium. The warmest month of the year is September with an average maximum temperature of 71.70 degrees Fahrenheit, while the coldest month of the year is January with an average minimum temperature of 43.60 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperature variations between night and day are generally limited during summer with a difference that can reach 15 degrees Fahrenheit; winter brings an average difference of only 13 degrees Fahrenheit. Moraga Orinda Fire District

uch of Orinda, due to the weather, terrain, and other factors, is designated a very high fire hazard safety zone underscoring the importance of fire and emergency coverage in the area. The Moraga Orinda Fire District (MOFD) provides the highest quality fire protection, fire prevention, and emergency medical services available in northern California. Orinda’s first fire protection agency, the Orinda Volunteer Fire Department, was established in 1923. Fourteen years ago, the city of Orinda and the town of Moraga joined forces to form the MOFD, an independent special district supported by local property taxes and a special assessment tax based on property size. The MOFD has a five-member, unpaid governing board elected by neighborhood districts. The District is also fortunate to have the support of the Rescue One Foundation, a citizen-inspired non-profit organization, which raises funds to support the paramedic and ambulance service programs The District’s 74 full-time staff and18 paid on-call reserves manage approximately 2,900 emergencies a year throughout Orinda, Moraga, Canyon, and the surrounding unincorporated areas. The MOFD’s five fire stations, of which three are located in Orinda, collectively respond an average of 16 times each day. The District has three ambulances staffed by firefighterparamedics who are cross-trained and work in a dual capacity. In addition, paramedic coverage is provided on every fire engine that goes out on a call. The MOFD can be reached at (925) 258-4599. he citizens of Orinda are fortunate to live in a city where “community” counts. As needs arise, community organizations are formed and people donate their time and money — Orindans come together to help create, build, fix, teach, honor, assist, and celebrate.

Lamorinda Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) www.lamorindacert.org The CERT program trains people to be prepared for emergency situations in our community by giving them the practical skills needed to organize and offer immediate assistance to family, neighbors and associates while waiting for first responders to arrive. Orinda Community Center Auxiliary (OCCA) (925) 254-2445 The OCCA has supported the Orinda Community Center since 1976. The OCCA sponsors the Tuesday night summer concert series in the Community Center Park and the Holiday Bazaar in early November. Orinda Association www.orindaassociation.org (925) 254-0800 Founded in 1946, The Orinda Association focuses on promoting awareness and encouraging dialogue among Orinda residents on issues of importance to the community. The association produces “The Orinda News” monthly and hosts a Candidates Forum every two years. Mobilizing volunteer efforts to enhance the beauty, character and security of Orinda, the Association runs the 4th of July parade as well as the Seniors Around Town transportation program, the Volunteer Center and the Soccer For All donation program, among others. Educational Foundation of Orinda (EFO) http://orindaefo.org (925) 253-0885 Working in partnership with the Orinda Union School District and Miramonte High School to bridge the gap where state funds leave off, the EFO provides financial support for quality educational and enrichment programs that impact every student in Orinda’s public schools. Orinda Historical Society www.orindahistory.org (925) 254-1353 The Orinda Historical Society helps to preserve the history of Orinda by protecting, preserving and displaying artifacts, documents and images in its museum and educating its members and the general public about Orinda area history. Orinda Parks and Recreation Foundation (925) 254-2445 Incorporated in 1975, this group is the original fundraising arm for the Orinda Parks and Recreation. They gave financial support to the Community Park and Center. The Foundation focuses on the recreation, beautification, open space, community improvement and community service needs of the total Orinda Community.

Orinda Community Foundation www.orindafoundation.org (925) 254-0800 The Orinda Community Foundation, established in February 2010, helps to support many of the treasured traditions, community programs and events in Orinda through fund raising, encouraging philanthropy and building partnerships with other community organizations. The "Celebrate Everyday Heroes” Golf Tournament in July, the NorCal Kids Triathlon in late summer, and direct mail solicitations are the Foundation’s major fundraisers. Recue One Foundation 1280 Moraga Way, Moraga The Rescue One Foundation functions as the support group for the paramedic program for the Moraga/Orinda Fire District. Since Rescue One Foundation was established, about 30 years ago, over $340,000 has been received in donations from the community to purchase emergency medical equipment and training materials for the District’s paramedic program. The Friends of the Orinda Library www.friendsoftheorindalibrary.org (925) 254-2184 The Friends raise funds to enrich library collections, help the library respond to patrons’ needs, and serve as advocates for library funding. The Friends own the library building, which is maintained by the City of Orinda, and the Contra Costa County Library system operates the library. The Orinda Arts Council (OAC) www.OrindaArtsCouncil.org Founded in 1950, The Orinda Arts Council has been stimulating, supporting, and advocating the visual and performing arts in our schools and community for the last sixty years. Key activities include classroom and after-school arts programs, art competitions and exhibits, theater, musicals, and a film festival; the OAC also presents the annual Orinda Idol competition. The Friends of Orinda Creeks (FOC) www.orindacreeks.org A volunteer organization founded in 1994, the members of FOC work hands-on to monitor, restore, and protect native habitat to our creeks in order to maintain clean water and a healthy watershed. The friends also seek to help educate the public about the values of, and threats to, Orinda’s creeks

The Orinda Chamber of Commerce

he Orinda Chamber of Commerce works closely with its members, the City of Orinda, and many of our community organizations and clubs to promote Orinda. The Chamber organizes a Comedy Night in the spring and the annual Restaurant Tour in the fall. Every 4th of July, Chamber members can be spotted in the parade as well as selling hot dogs in the Community Park. In December, the Chamber and Hospice of the East Bay sponsor a tree lighting ceremony. For its members, the Chamber offers networking and promotional opportunities throughout the year with mixers, event sponsorship opportunities, introductions and referrals. Special lunch meetings with keynote speakers and ribbon-cutting ceremonies are additional benefits. The Chamber website and e-newsletters keep everyone informed. Spring Egg Hunt Featuring over 1,000 eggs and many happy youngsters, the Orinda Rotary Club's Annual Egg Hunt takes place at the Orinda Community Center Play Field. Orinda and the Arts

rinda celebrates the arts everyday through visual art, live music and theater, and film. The Orinda Arts Council (OAC) has taken the lead in stimulating the local art scene and supporting the visual and performing arts in both the schools and the community for the past 60 years. Taking a stroll through Orinda Village, residents and visitors enjoy the variety of museum-quality sculptures that are on display in and around the Community Center and City Hall. The City’s Art in Public Places Committee, a team of resident art lovers, obtains the artworks “on loan” from several local and nationally-recognized artists and regularly rotates the pieces providing an ever-changing outdoor landscape of art. Some of the works, such as “Outta Here”–the whimsical frog flying over the fountain– have become so well-loved that they have been purchased, or donated by the artist, so they may continue to delight passersby. In addition, the Library Art Gallery hosts a rotating monthly exhibit of paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, sculpture and crafts by Bay Area artists and Lamorinda students. Orinda’s Tuesday night summer concert series in the Community Center Park; which features a mix of rock, R&B, disco, and blues, is a favorite time for residents (young and old alike) to picnic and visit with friends. Recently, the Orinda Rotary Club added opera to outdoor concert schedule. This afternoon of music features performances by several Bay Area opera stars. One of the highlights of the year is the OAC’s annual Orinda Idol contest, which showcases the remarkable musical talent of the youth in Lamorinda. Orinda also has two performance venues that give patrons the opportunity to watch live theater up close and under the stars. The Starlight Village Players, a community theater group, performs three plays each summer/fall season in a terraced amphitheater set in a redwood grove in the Community Center Park. And California Shakespeare Theater, a nationally recognized regional theater commonly referred to as Cal Shakes, presents Shakespeare’s works along with contemporary stage classics between June and October at the unique and beautiful Bruns Amphitheater–a great place to witness outdoor theater. Visible from Highway 24, the iconic marquee of the Orinda Theater serves as a historic landmark for the city. The Orinda Theater, with its art deco interior and painted murals, itself is much more. The Theater shows contemporary film favorites, provides indie-film lovers with a monthly international film selection, premieres local independent film projects, and hosts comedy nights.

The Orinda Library

he Orinda Library has come a long way since it started with a handful of books housed on two shelves in the local dry goods store in 1924. The first dedicated library was built on Irwin Way in Orinda Village in the late 1950’s. The autumn of 2011 marks the tenth anniversary of the opening of the library as we know it today; a community treasure that includes an art gallery, a large auditorium, meeting rooms, a plaza, and a café. Built through the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the Orinda Library in partnership with the City of Orinda, what some still call our “new” library was the first in Contra Costa County to be owned by a non-profit ‘Friends’ organization — the partnership continues to flourish as the Friends own the building while the City of Orinda maintains it and the county library system operates the library. The library is WiFi enabled and has 29 computers available for public use. Visitors can enjoy the library’s large collection of book, periodicals, music, and electronic media sitting on the many comfy chairs and pillows and in reading nooks naturally lit by the building’s large windows and skylights. The Library also hosts several live events throughout the year including children’s programs, musical performances, presentations by docents from the Berkeley Repertory Theatre and California Shakespeare Theater, and a mystery book club. Located near the Community Center and Park, the library is a focal point of activity–the Orinda City Council holds its public meetings in the Library Auditorium on the first and third Tuesday of each month; the Orinda Arts Council organizes and curates monthly art exhibits in the Library Gallery featuring local artists or interesting displays; and neighbors are frequently spotted relaxing in the plaza, enjoying the fountain and public art installations over tea and treats from the café.

Although not a golfer himself, land developer Edward de Laveaga knew it was essential to create a topnotch golfing and recreational facility to complement the 418-acre subdivison–called Haciendas de Orinda–that he built in and around Lake Cascade. Completed in 1925, the Orinda Country Club clubhouse has a spectacular view overlooking the 18th fairway. Today, the clubhouse with its Spanish Mediterranean architecture serves as a historical landmark. Construction of the OCC golf course in the 1920’s was an ambitious endeavor given the topography of the landscape with many peaks and valleys. de Laveaga recruited the internationally renowned golf course architect and Scotsman Willie Wilson to design the course. Watson gave each hole a unique name to reflect to the area’s Indian history (#11 Graveyard is the site of an old, native American burial ground), Spanish culture (#17 is called Rincon which means cozy corner), and the difficulty of the terrain (like #5 a tricky dogleg called Mousetrap). OCC promotes a “family club” atmosphere and offers a range of dining, social, and recreational activities, which includes five tennis courts, lighted for night play; a heated, Olympic-sized swimming pool; and a fitness center. Parks, Trails and Recreation

he Orinda community is surrounded by several large park and regional preserves, including Tilden Park, San Pablo Reservoir, Briones Open Space, and Lafayette Reservoir. Orinda is at the crossroads of many National and Regional Trail systems. These include The American Discovery Trail, The deLaveaga Trail, and The East Bay Regional Park Trail System, as well as several local walking areas. Orinda has received the designation of "Trail Town U.S.A." by the American Hiking Association, and also has a couple of nice parks of its own. Parks Orinda Community Center Park The Community Park is located next to the Orinda Community Center at 28 Orinda Way. The Park includes a large open grass area, two playground areas (one featuring a water play area), picnic and barbecue areas along with three tennis courts with lights.

Orinda Oaks Park This semi-rural park is located on Moraga Way between Hall and Ivy Drives. The Oaks Park offers an 11-acre picnic/barbecue and play area that includes one horseshoe pit and a large grass area suitable for field games and volleyball. Above the park lies Mulholland Ridge Open Space, a 250 acre preserve that is open for hiking from dawn to dusk daily. The ridge is relatively high, offering breathtaking views on a clear day of the surrounding East Bay hills and the Diablo Range.

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Recreation Areas www.ebmud.com/recreation San Pablo Recreation Area 7301 San Pablo Dam Road, El Sobrante (510) 223-1661 This recreation area offers exciting outdoor activities including fishing, boating, picnicking, kayaking and hiking. Park facilities are also available for group events. San Pablo Recreation Area is located off San Pablo Dam Road between Orinda and El Sobrante. Dogs on leash are welcome but leashes may not be longer than six feet in length Lafayette Recreation Area (925) 284-9669 3849 Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Lafayette Lafayette Recreation Area is an all-year day-use area ideal for hiking, jogging, fishing, boating and picnicking. You can take the one mile long St. Stephens pedestrian and bike trail to get to the reservoir.

East Bay Regional Parks www.ebparks.org/parks 1-888-EBPARKS Briones Regional Park With its rolling, grassy hills and secluded, shady canyons, Briones is a secret wilderness with peaks within it from which you can see only park and watershed lands for miles in every direction. To reach the Bear Creek Staging Area on Bear Creek Road, take Camino Pablo (which becomes San Pablo Dam Road) and head toward Richmond. Turn right on Bear Creek Road and travel five miles to the staging area on the right. Tilden Regional Park You can enter the park on its east side from Wildcat Canyon Road off San Pablo Dam Road just north of Orinda Village. From there you can access hiking and views from Inspiration Point, visit the Botanic Garden and Brazil Building, or enjoy golfing and the park's other attractions. Tilden's 2,079 acres Tilden Nature Area is a 740-acre preserve located just North of Tilden Regional Park. With over 10 miles of hiking trails as well as a renowned Environmental Education Center and the historic Little Farm.

Parks, Trails and Recreation Trails You can enjoy 80 miles of EBMUD trails in the East Bay. These hiking and horseback-riding paths go through 27,000 acres of open space. EBMUD provides parking at five staging areas and water on the trails for horses. EBMUD manages watershed lands to protect water quality. For this reason, trail users must follow use rules and have permits. Trail maps may be obtained at the Orinda Community Center or by contacting EBMUD at (510) 835-3000. Order a permit online at www.ebmud.com/recreation/ebmud-trails-permits. de Laveaga Trail The de Laveaga trail, an EBMUD trail, starts just at the corner of Moraga Way and the Orinda on- ramp to Highway 24. You'll see a chain link fence with some EBMUD signs, and you can park in the gravel area. The challenging three mile trail gives access to the National Skyline Trail and leads to spectacular ridge-top views of Orinda and beyond. There is a four hour time limit. Purchase an EMUD permit beforehand as you need to sign in. St. Stephen’s Pedestrian & Bike Trail The St. Stephen’s Trail runs along the eastbound lanes of Highway 24 to St. Stephen's Drive; a safe bike path from the Crossroads in Orinda to Lafayette. To find the trail, start at Theatre Square in Orinda. Head east as if you are getting on Hwy 24 toward Lafayette. Turn right At Davis Road —on the left of the first stop sign is the hard-to-spot entrance to St. Stephen’s Trail. The American Discovery Trail (ADT) www.discoverytrail.org The EBMUD trail at Wagner Ranch connects to the American Discovery Trail which is a national trail that links community to community through 6,800+ miles of continuous trails stretching across America.

Cycling A great way to get to know our community is to pedal the 15-mile Lamorinda Loop. Take the St. Stephens trail (above). The trail runs along the eastbound lanes of Highway 24 to St. Stephen's Drive. Ride down the hill and follow Happy Valley Road to Mt. Diablo Blvd. A right turn on Mt. Diablo will eventually bring you to Moraga Road; turn right on Moraga Road and then left at School Street. Just past Stanley Middle School is an entrance to the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail. Follow the trail all the way back up to Moraga, emerging at the Moraga Commons Park at the corner of St. Mary’s Road and Moraga Road; cross Moraga Road and follow the trail around the Safeway, then turn right on Moraga Way and cruise back into Orinda.
