In Waterlook Park there is a barren and unused area in the east area of the site. This location is the vehicular entrance to the park, however, it lacked a pedestrian entrance. Additionally, the area of the park severley lacks shelter from high volumes of rain, and is in need of more spaces for shade. Heavily inspired by the Hegemonikon by Christina Zeibak and Daphne Dow, and Part to Whole by HG-A the Slab Stack Paviloin implemented elements from the two projects. As a result, the Slab Stack Pavilion with laters of cross laminated timber to adress the challenges of Waterloo Park.

The Douglas Wright Engineering (DWE) Building, formerly known as Engineering 1, constructed in 1958, has significant performance issues due to envelope failures. The project aimed to improve occupancy comfort by adding shading devices to reduce solar heat gain and prevent overheating during the winter. Improvements to the building envelope were made to enhance energy performance through continuous insulation and ensuring the building’s air and water tightness. The building’s aesthetic is modernised replacing the brick veneer façade with fiber-reinforced cement panels.

The Univeristy of Waterloo faces challenges of having high-quality short-term residences, underutilized environment, limited comfortable spaces, and poor accessibility. Laurel Lake Retreat is revolved around a compact guest housing space within a 10-square-meter constraint. Being situated in an open space surrounded by trees and a nearby river, it optimizes the natural beauty of Waterloo. Additionally, the orinetation of the building is north-facing allowing for great sunlight wihthout overheating in the evening.
