Liam’s continues to offer a small but purposeful and delicious menu to its guests

R

h onda and Scott Foster had an idea— an idea to open a restaurant that serves wholesome food, most of which is grown and raised by local farmers and ranchers right here in our area.

So, they moved their family of three to Thomasville from Englewood, Florida in 2002 and that December opened Liam’s, named after their now 19-yearold son.

“There weren’t really any restaurants in downtown

Thomasville when we opened,” Rhonda recalls, “and I think we were one of the first to really help start that revitalization of the area.”

Together, Rhonda and Scott have approximately 33 years of restaurant experience. She works with the back of house and the bar staff, as well as costing, while Scott has a background as a chef and works with the kitchen staff.

They work alongside area farmers and ranchers to set their menu, which changes pretty regularly.

“We keep some main staples, but we also like to keep the menu small so that everything stands out,” Rhonda says.

“Depending on what’s in season, we also add and take stuff away, and we like to revamp the menu when fall and winter produce is growing.”

Chef Tyler Bailey has full control of the menu, which Rhonda describes as “deliberate,” because he is trying to create the best flavor combinations and showcase local and seasonal produce.

A few of the local vendors they work with include Hubbard Sausage in Thomasville, Grateful Hill Farm in Brooks County, Grassroots Coffee in downtown Thomasville and Georgia Olive Farms in Lakeland.

“We really try to utilize what’s around us when we can,” Rhonda says. “When you buy something in season, it’s economical. But we’ve also learned that we have a chance to monitor the quality of what we feed our customers. I also think people feel better when they eat locally grown and raised produce.”

n hour spent with expressive realist Ron Thomson is time well spent. He’s a prolific artist and nature aficionado who has called Thomasville home for the past few years. I had the privilege to sit down with him and learn about his artistic inspirations, his

enduring love for wildlife and nature, and his perspective on life in a small community.

Thomson was born in Spain, but spent the majority of his childhood in Sopchoppy, FL, exploring the outdoors and cultivating a deep love for nature that would blossom into a lifelong 19 THOMASVILLEMAGAZINE.COM | WINTER 2019

Not only is Thomson incredibly talented, he also has the credentials to back it up. He earned his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Florida State University and notes that, although it was difficult to subject his life’s passion to a board of critical art educators, he learned valuable skills during his university time, chief among them being the process of elimination. ARTIST John Singer Sargent, a gifted portrait and landscape painter who made his brush strokes on the tapestry of history during the late 19th and early 20th century.

Thomson describes a particular piece by Sargent in which it appeared the artist had painted a string of pearls on a beautiful woman’s neck, when in fact it was only the illusion of pearls. It was what he didn’t paint that caused the viewer to take a second look.

“That is the kind of magic I aspire to: to master the interplay of light and shadow to capture beauty.” Thomson’s prolific collection includes breathtaking landscapes, wildlife of all varieties, dogs, portraits and a plethora of other provoking scenes, such as that of a red front door on a side street in Charleston, South Carolina. At first blush, it’s a simple painting, but as you look deeper and listen to the artist describe it, so much more can be discovered. The newspaper on the front stoop gives the impression that the morning is stretching long and lazy before the residents inside, where a light is on so it appears they are home. There are no people in the painting, but you feel as though just beyond that friendly door, there may be a lovely couple perhaps enjoying a Sunday morning together eating breakfast.

Thomson has mastered the subtle art of evoking something far beyond what appears on the canvas.

Thomson has resided in the Thomasville area for a few years now, and he cherishes the community he has found here. Through his position as an artist-in-residence for the Thomasville Center for the Arts, he’s had the opportunity to make countless connections with other members of the community, from designers and curators, to young children in art class, and he appreciates all of them. He loves being able to impart wisdom to the younger generation and appreciates the opportunity to grow his career in a town that fosters a love for the same thing he does―the outdoors.

even more people in the community, including artists and those who appreciate it. He has two pieces of advice he shares with burgeoning artists.

“If you want to be a successful artist, do not neglect relationship and community. You will fail if you are in isolation. We all need each other,” is the first. And the second? “If you really want to be an artist, be a schoolteacher or an engineer. If after that, you still want to be an artist, you may really be an artist after all.”

ocated just outside of Thomasville is a national treasure experiencing a renaissance worthy of the phoenix.

Now rising from the ashes of neglect and abuse, Pope’s Museum closed in 1973. Following that last ticket sale, time, humanity and nature took a

harsh toll on this amazing site, but new owners, fresh vision and community support have enabled one of America’s first outsider artist collections to return to its place of civic pride, cultural strength and economic growth. Today, Pope’s Museum, an artistic, architectural and economic jewel, has 27 THOMASVILLEMAGAZINE.COM | WINTER 2019

been restored and has a bright future ahead.

Found in what was formerly the western portion of Thomas County, Pope’s Museum is the former home of Laura Pope Forester (1873-1953), a selftaught artist notable not only for creating a large art environment of high artistic quality around her rural residence and store, but also as one of the few female artists to do so in the 20th century.

She had no formal training other than three months from a traveler, and her art was not featured during her lifetime in any exhibits. Yet before her death in 1953, she had created 200 sculptures, wall to wall murals, and gardens of exquisite design and intention.

She also spent her life working to open up possibilities for women, often with her art.

Because of her position on opportunities for women, Laura’s message was just as revolutionary as her art. She intentionally created replicas of the women and men (mostly women) that demonstrated a 28

trait she found admirable. Examples are Cleopatra, Margaret Mitchell’s literary heroine Scarlet O’Hara, and Nancy Hart, the Georgia heroine who singlehandedly captured and hung six British military officials during the Revolutionary War. Using such common objects as Model T wheels and sewing machine parts, sand from Pope’s Creek and berries from the estate, she created an emporium of architectural marvels, large wall murals and statues that were statements of her convictions.

She was also a patriot.

Statues of Red Cross nurses of World War I, women in industry and the Queen Mother are embedded with hand hewn marble slabs of the veterans from our area who served in the world wars. Along with honoring our veterans, her message resonated the value of women in our society.

Laura Pope Forester’s art and message captured the attention of newspapers and print throughout Georgia and the nation. There are dozens of files of her work in the United States Library of Congress, Atlanta’s High Museum and Georgia

AN ECLECTIC STEP BACK IN TIME

The renaissance of Pope’s Museum combines more than architecture and art with gardens and groves; it is beauty with elegance and history with art. This is a national treasure with its roots in our community and a story that all can be proud of.

State University. Even today, travelers walking through the main terminal of the Denver, Colorado airport see a wall size U.S. map featuring two places in each state that travelers are encouraged to visit. For Georgia, Pope’s Museum is one of those two featured attractions.

All of this was unknown to Dan and Michelle Dean when they purchased the home three years ago, but they soon realized they were stewards of a national treasure. With direction from a lawyer and an accountant, a nonprofit organization was formed to preserve, rehabilitate and acquire the surviving works of Laura Pope Forester.

Since its inception nearly 24 months ago, much has been accomplished.

Through a partnership with UGA Archway, Pope’s Museum has received complete blueprints for historic rehabilitation of the gardens. Phases one and two have begun, with the corporate sponsorship of Flowerwood Nursery, Graco Fertilizer, Monrovia Nursery and G and M Landscaping.

With donations from businesses and individuals, various works of Laura’s have been returned, including one from the estate of Jonathan Demme, the Oscar winning director of the film Silence of the Lambs.

These examples of community support are only part of the story. Validation of preserving Laura’s artwork has been given at the governmental and artistic level. Specifically, the site received contingent approval to be on the National Register of Historic Places for art, recreation and leisure, and women’s history. Also, Laura’s work and Pope’s Museum were featured by the High Museum in Atlanta as part of their outsider art exhibit from March to May of 2019.

Perhaps most unique, Pope’s Museum and the Deans received royal mail. Literally. The family wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth II to share with her an onsite statue honoring her mother within the World War II memorial. To their delight they

received a reply from Buckingham Palace.

Unless you live under a rock, you have heard this word floating around the health and wellness community for decades. Study after study shows how meditation, even just five minutes a day, can lower stress levels and boost the immune system in ways almost unexplainable. Yes, meditation is even for those Type A personalities who are workaholics and often exhibit high stress. There are many different techniques, from breath work to repeating mantras.

The key is finding the right one for you. A great place to start is by checking using Dr. Andrew Weil’s 4-7-8 Breathing Exercises (drweil.com). This is by far the easiest way to de-stress this holiday season, and meditation can be done anytime and anywhere, even while standing in those long lines this season.

When we exercise, dopamine— a key chemical to maintaining happiness in the brain—is released.

Ever heard of runner’s high? Or wonder how people can become “addicted” to exercise? This chemical is the main reason. Exercise will release dopamine and help you feel happier and less stressed.

Exercise also puts low levels of stress on the body naturally. By doing this, the body learns to adapt and handle the stresses of everyday life, i.e. the holidays, more efficiently. Walk, run, play pickleball, hit the gym, take a Pilates or yoga class. Whatever fits your schedule, do something you enjoy! Exercise does not need to be something you dread. Nor does it need to take hours of your time. Find an activity you like that fits into your schedule, and make it part of your daily routine.

This is a big one for the holidays, party after party. Maybe you have to go over to grandma’s house and be tempted by all your childhood comfort foods. Take a step back here, my friends. This is where stress rears its ugly head. People are way too hard on themselves, trying to deny what they really want only to end up binging on foods they shouldn’t.

Allow yourself some freedom, but be mindful about it. Choose where and what you will let yourself enjoy.

Giving can be to someone you know or do not know. It doesn’t have to be huge or expensive. But I dare you to give this a try. You will be amazed how your stress level drops when you put someone before yourself.

Our bodies work hard every day. So many systems are working to keep the brain functioning, organs functioning, blood flowing and so on. When we are stressed, these systems will suffer dysfunction or even fail. When one or more systems in the body aren’t working properly, we can experience more stress.

Lack of sleep can also make us feel more stressed. Our bodies rebuild at night.

With proper sleep, we can manage stress more effectively. How do you sleep better? Follow the checklist above―clear your thoughts with meditation, decrease inflammation through proper nutrition choices and grounding, increase joy with giving, and move or exercise.

Thanksgiving isn’t the only day of the year we need to be thankful.

Celebrate life with those you love and let them know how thankful you are for them. Send five postcards to friends or family with a little note saying how much you love them and are thankful for them. Gratitude sets everyone up for happiness and a stress-less attitude.

s far back as our nation’s earliest days with George Washington at the helm, Americans have been enamored with galloping their horses over hill and dale behind a pack of hounds. Antique paintings depicting flashy red coats, shining horns and idyllic farmland can be found in even the most modern of homes. What most people probably don’t know is that they can still experience the thrilling traditional sport of fox hunting in many places

around the country, including right here in South Georgia.

Straddling the Georgia-Florida border with a driveway in each state, Live Oak Hounds (LOH) is as deeply rooted in Thomas County as it is a world-renowned fixture in the fox hunting community. With roughly 120 hounds, 28 horses and five professional hunt staff, it’s one of the largest operations in the country and the only hunt of its kind for about three hours in any direction. In a region famous for

“The worst experience that a fox hunt ever gives is a trail ride through beautiful country with nice people. On the other end of the scale, it can be as exhilarating as the most difficult downhill ski slope, and then there is everything in between,” says LOH’s co-founder, Daphne Wood.

While the name “fox hunting” of course implies hunting foxes, these animals are not a focus for the hunt as they are not the primary threat in this area. Feral pigs, however, can wipe out a large crop field in a single night, costing American farmers millions of dollars in damages each year, and coyotes prey on quail and their eggs. Both the pig and coyote populations have drastically increased over the past decade. Riding through farmland with horses and hounds deters these animals from making their homes―and finding their meals―on those properties.

Daphne discovered her passion for the sport during her time living in Virginia while her husband attended business school. When he became CFO of her family’s business,

Flowers Foods, they moved back to her hometown of Thomasville. Because the nearest hunt was three hours away, she convinced her husband, C. Martin Wood, to come along for a few, and he was quickly hooked. Naturally, when Marty suggested getting a few hounds of their own, Daphne was all in.

“If we’d known what we were getting into, we might’ve thought twice,” she says, admitting she has no regrets, and creating a world-class pack of foxhounds with her husband is one of her proudest achievements in life. When the hunt launched, it was with Marty “carrying the horn,” which he did for 31 years. They both still actively participate in every hunt­—Marty drives his trusty Tahoe through the tall pines and over muddy firebreaks with great enthusiasm and Daphne, at 73 years old, rides her horses over 90 times each season. Since they own, operate and fund the hunt facilities, they each hold the title of “Master” of the hunt.

at ever-increasing rates. Daphne has been on the board of Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy since 1993, where she has volunteered for 40 years. With her help as chairman of the easement committee, the organization has placed about 135,000 acres of land under conservation easement. In addition, the Woods personally own tens of thousands of acres that they use for hunting, which is also under easement. Development of this protected land will be very minimal, allowing over 80 endangered plants and animals to continue living as undisturbed as possible. Without the extensive and costly conservation efforts of the hunters, the land would inevitably be paved over and many species lost.

“Asphalt is the last crop,” says Daphne, “and it’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when.” The presence of hunting plantations like Live Oak and the surrounding properties is the very reason that animals such as the native Bobwhite quail still exist, and even thrive, in this pocket of the Southeast.

LOH is also an enthusiastic supporter of the Pony Club, which every year holds a special camp, drawing dozens of kids to ride in two hunts in addition to daily activities geared towards piquing their interest in the sport. In the evenings, the families gather for big spaghetti dinners in a rustic lodge on the plantation, where they are educated about the sport and get to talk to the friendly staff. The Woods fund the Live Oak Hounds Fox Hunting Challenge, awarding $10,000 to the top six hunts in the country who get the largest percentage of their local Pony Clubbers to go hunting.

Riding cross-country can be extremely challenging and takes practice for both horse and rider. For this reason, there are different groups that riders can choose to join during a hunt. “First Flight” will ride as fast as necessary to keep up with the huntsman and hounds, while “Second Flight” will take it a little easier. “Third Flight” is perfect for beginner fox hunters and kids.

Even if a rider has a lot of experience, their horse usually needs some time to adjust both mentally and physically to the new environment. There really is no typical ride; a day’s hunting could meander around a couple hundred acres, or blaze across state lines and cover seven plantations.

The uncertainty of what the day will bring is part of the fascination for people who have fallen in love with the sport.

Fox hunting is a professional sport and as such requires a specialized and dedicated staff. These are the huntsman, the kennel huntsman and the whipper-in. Live Oak is fortunate to be able to accommodate five professionals.

Having more staff provides a better experience, enables the hunt to be more dynamic and makes everyone’s jobs easier.

The huntsman is responsible for the training and daily care of the hounds, in addition to guiding them through the hunt country. The kennel huntsman works with the huntsman in almost all aspects of the job, except when they are out hunting, at which point he or she will function as a whipper-in. The whipper-in’s job is to keep the hounds safe during the hunt. Sometimes they crack a long whip to signal that a hard stop is required, hence the name. All of these positions require a very high level of horseback riding skill that comes only with experience in the hunt field.

Live Oak has a very large pack of hounds considered professional athletes in their own right. Around 40 to 50 hounds go out together. Traditionally they are counted in

pairs, so the staff refers to the number as “20-25 couple.”

Without the hounds there is no hunt, and when Daphne refers to their hounds as world-class, she’s not exaggerating.

They have won innumerable awards in top hound shows around the country over nearly five decades.

Martin is the only American to be invited to judge at the extremely prestigious Royal Peterborough Hound Show in England, a very high honor.

Through their connections across the pond, they have been able to import many champion English foxhounds into their pack. Most of their hounds are either pure English foxhounds or Crossbred foxhounds with an emphasis on the English lines because the couple believes that English foxhounds have superior noses, drive and are “biddable” or easy to handle.

They have been breeding more “voice” into the pack, meaning how much sound the hounds make while following a scent. They need to “speak” frequently in order for the riders to know which way they’ve gone in the woods. For this, they have outcrossed their English hounds

with American ones, particularly the Treeing Walker Coonhound, which has produced exceptional results.

LOH breeds three to four litters a year, with every hound carefully looked after and receiving the very best veterinary care throughout their lives. LOH hounds enjoy a comfortable retirement there on the property, and the Woods are frequently overheard referring to the hounds as their “children.” They do love them more than anything else in the world—except for perhaps the Jack Russell and Labrador that snuggle up with them every night.

Fox hunting is a traditional sport that has evolved to fit modern times, retaining the beauty and excitement that has carried it through the centuries.

& Frye food truck, along with Spencer Young of Grassroots. Chef John has over 15 years of experience working as a chef in NYC, where he most recently served four years as executive chef at PJ Clarkes in Manhattan.

RECIPES CHRISTMAS EVE Moving down here, John was exposed to venison for the first time. When asked by a client to prepare Christmas dinner for a private residence, John had his first request for venison stew. While looking through his mother-in-law’s old cookbooks, he found a recipe he could work with and has been making it for the past few years, giving it his own twist and perfecting a specialty he can call his own.

Venison Stew Serves 12 Set oven to 350 degrees 8 lbs of venison, cut into 1 ½ inch cubes ½ cup flour 1 lb uncured or applewood smoked bacon 2 – 32oz low sodium beef stock 10 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 1 ½ inch chunks 2 lb new potatoes 4 Vidalia onions, medium dice 2 tbsp tomato paste 1 can of Guinness Salt and pepper to taste

Cut bacon into 2-inch chunks, place in a heavy bottom Dutch oven, and cook until bacon is crispy but not burnt. Remove bacon and leave fat.

Toss the venison in flour and cook in the bacon fat. Remove venison after it has nice color. Add carrots, celery and onions, and cook until onions are translucent. Add tomato paste and coat vegetables. Cook for 2 mins. Add can of Guinness and beef stock.

Once Guinness and beef stock have begun to boil, add venison, bacon and potatoes. Cover with lid and place in oven. Cook for 1 ½ to 2 hours until venison is tender.

As a parent, John knows how crazy and exciting Christmas morning can be. After all the presents have been opened, it’s time to eat! This

crumb cake can be made a couple of days in advance, he says, and placed in a 200-degree oven about an hour before serving.

Blackberry Ginger Crumb Cake 9x12 inch cake pan greased with butter 350 degree oven For the Streusel 1 lb unsalted butter 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup dark brown sugar 1 tbsp kosher salt 2 tbsp cinnamon 2 cups all-purpose flour Once butter has softened, combine ingredients in a mixer on low speed with paddle attachment. The consistency should crumble like wet sand. If not, slowly add more flour. Divide in half.

For the Cake 1 cup of butter 1 cup granulated sugar 8 egg yolks ½ cup whole milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 ½ cups cake flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp kosher salt 1 pint of blackberries split ½ cup of diced candied ginger

Cream butter and sugar on medium speed until light yellow and fluffy. Slowly add egg yolks and vanilla.

Sift together dry ingredients.

Alternate between milk and dry ingredients, adding on low speed to batter. Pour batter into greased cake pan, and top with half batch of crumbles,

split blackberries and candied ginger. Crumbles will fall to the bottom, and that is ok.

Bake for 15 minutes. Carefully remove pan and top with remaining crumbles. Cook for 15 minutes more or until a toothpick comes out clean.

RECIPES NEW YEAR’S EVE

As a chef, John is frequently asked to bring food, and the pressure is on to “wow” people, he says. These crostini look good, taste good, will impress all your foodie friends and will not have you stuck in the kitchen for hours.

Everything is made in a large non-stick skillet.

Celebration Crostini Serves 12 1 French baguette ½ pound fontina cheese 2 Vidalia onions, sliced thin 1 8 oz jar fig jam 2 tbsp dark brown sugar ½ lb pancetta (preferably pre-diced) 2 tbsp unsalted butter 1 small bunch fresh thyme Slice baguettes on an angle and keep the slices thin. This will give you a crunchy crostini. Place diced pancetta in the nonstick skillet and cook over medium heat. Once the pancetta is nice and crispy, remove it and leave the fat in the pan. Add

sliced onions. Once onions start to get brown, add brown sugar.

Continue to cook (add water if pan gets too sticky).

Remove onions and place pan away from heat. Once pan has cooled slightly, add butter and put back on burner. Place crostini in buttered pan on medium heat, cooking until the edges start to brown. Turn off heat, flip crostini and top with fontina cheese. Cover with a lid and put burner on low to allow the cheese to melt. Once melted, remove and top with jam, onions, pancetta and finish with chopped thyme.

A

s I write this, I’m looking out the upstairs window of the shop, and the leaves on the trees outside are finally beginning to change.

The nights are growing longer, and there’s a slight chill in the air; we’re officially entering the busiest and brightest season at The Bookshelf. Despite the chaos, or perhaps because of it, this is our favorite time of year. There’s something magical about downtown Thomasville during the holidays, and it’s a joy to fill our shop with all sorts of meaningful books and gifts you’ll give to your friends and family this December.

FOR THE TODDLER

E

very family we know owns multiple copies of Goodnight Moon, so this holiday season go for something a little less traditional for the little ones you love. High Five, written by the creators of Dragons Love Tacos, is colorful and interactive, teaching kids how to give the best high five. There are stretches and challenges that will have preschoolers rolling with laughter, and the rhyming scheme is great for reading aloud. Another one of our holiday favorites is Kevin the Unicorn: It’s Not All Rainbows, which hilariously shows children how to turn a bad day into a good one.

FOR THE ELEMENTARY KID

M

iddle grade readers tend to stick with book series— think Dogman, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Magic Treehouse, Junie B. Jones and Last Kids on Earth—but it can be tough to know which books they already own or have read. Our manager Olivia is an expert in children’s lit, and each month she mails out our children’s Shelf Subscription, a book-a-month club for kids that includes a brand new hardcover middle grade title she’s read and loved.

A children’s Shelf Subscription would make the perfect Christmas gift, but if you want to put an actual book under the tree, Pages & Co.: The Bookwanderers is utterly original.

livia and I both read and loved Frankly in Love by David Yoon this summer. I appreciated Yoon’s realistic look at high school romance and his ability to tackle some pretty tough territory—identity, longing and home—with relative humor. And although the book was filled with various romantic pairings to potentially root for, my favorite relationship in the book was the friendship and affection between Frank and his best friend Q. Is the teen in your life reticent about romance? The latest edition of Atlas Obscura is gorgeous and inspiring, perfect for the teen on the cusp of adulthood and adventure.

L

iane Moriarty (of Big Little Lies fame) has been the name in women’s lit for the past several years, but chances are your friend/wife/mother/daughter has already read most of those titles. Instead, gift Joshilyn Jackson’s Never Have I Ever, a compulsively readable novel filled with the same snappy wit and mystery Moriarty is known for. If a memoir is more appealing, I’m obsessed with Wild Game, a mother-daughter story you’ll have to read to believe. It’s perfect for fans of Inheritance and The Glass Castle. And, if literary fiction is more her speed, try The Dutch House by Ann Patchett or The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall, both in my top 10 books of 2019.

A

s planning for the 31st annual Thomasville Antiques Show is underway, the Thomasville Antiques Show Foundation (TASF) is bringing into the spotlight their longtime mission by dedicating this year’s show to all the children who have been impacted by the over $2.5 million raised and distributed to local children’s charities over the past 30 years. Previously, shows have been dedicated to an individual who has shown

enormous generosity of time and efforts in support of the foundation and its mission. This year, the TASF wanted to honor the collective group they have pledged to serve since inception.

The mission of the TASF is to raise funds for nonprofit organizations focused on children’s programs in Thomasville, Thomas County and the surrounding areas. Only second to that mission is the goal of creating

an opportunity for the community to hear leaders of the design world speak as well as to shop the wares of some of the finest antiques and art dealers in the country.

TASF was established 30 years ago by Marguerite Neel Williams, a tireless philanthropist and a passionate advocate for education and the arts. A woman who loved antiques and historic renovation, Williams had been involved with the successful antiques show in Jacksonville and thought a local show would be a good way to raise funds for area children.

Five specific organizations—the Thomasville History Museum, Thomasville Center for the Arts, Thomasville Landmarks, the Thomasville YMCA and the Thomasville Public Library—were included in the TASF charter to be considered for yearly grants upon submission. Other frequent grantees and sample projects include the following: • The Family Enrichment Group received gifts to provide advocacy and services for abused and neglected children.

• The Boys & Girls Club has used funds to integrate STEM learning into its core programming.

• Hands & Hearts for Horses has used its TASF grants to support its therapy program and summer camp.

• The Vashti Center was granted funds to help continue their substance abuse intervention program for youth.

• The Treehouse Children’s Advocacy Center was gifted funds to improve safety features and enhance the security of children and families during visits.

While many of the grantees offer uplifting and joyful programs and services for local youth, unfortunately, a harsh reality of any community is that there are children affected by abuse, physical and mental disabilities, violence, homelessness, hunger and many other painful and unspeakable circumstances. TASF believes that how those in need, particularly children, are supported is what truly exemplifies the character and compassion of a community.

TASF is proud to garner attention for children in the area and honored to have such a mission in the hopes of making a better community now and in the future.

The Thomasville Antiques Show Foundation looks forward to yet another year bringing much needed awareness and funding to local children’s charities in a continued effort for each year to be a record-breaking one. TASF encourages everyone in the community to come enjoy any of the numerous activities throughout the Antiques Show weekend February 28 through March 1. TM

The Flowers Baking Company Christmas lights display includes new additions in celebration of the company’s 100th anniversary Through New Year’s Eve Flowers Light Extravaganza Starting the Sunday before Thanksgving, the Flowers Baking campus began welcoming guests to tour its all new Christmas light display, revamped in celebration of their 100th anniversary. The new display opened earlier in the year than usual and this year has extended hours, 6-10pm, as a thank you to the Thomasville community for their support these past 100 years.

Through New Year’s Eve Pebble Hill Christmas Display Celebrate the season as the entire estate is transformed into an oldfashioned Christmas wonderland, a magical holiday experience for the whole family. Covey Film Festival The festival is the signature fundraising event for the Thomasville Community Resource Center, which benefits hundreds of children every year.
