This Parent Handbook covers much of the basic information that you will need as a new or existing parent.
There is a Contacts page at the beginning and the remainder of the information is provided alphabetically for ease of reference. Much more information is available on our website and My School Portal, including our school policies.
We hope that you will find this handbook useful.

This handbook is confidential to parents of Thomas’s Clapham
We aim:
• To provide an exceptional and innovative education to young people aged 2 to 18, founded on breadth of experience and opportunity.
• To enable pupils to achieve academic excellence through a holistic approach that develops knowledge, skills, character and selfunderstanding.
• To ensure that every member of our school communities learns and lives by a strong set of values, with kindness at the heart.
Our vision is that every pupil at Thomas’s develops core values and a strong sense of social responsibility; inner strength, outward assurance and positive physical and mental health; academic success and a wide range of skills, interests and attributes; curiosity about the world and a love of learning.
The overall goal of a Thomas’s education is to equip all of our pupils with optimism and readiness for the future, to become net contributors to society, and to flourish as successful, conscientious and caring citizens of the world.
Our Values As well as the school rule ‘Be Kind’ we have a set of school values that underpin our curriculum and are explicit within our school community.
We expect pupils at Thomas’s to be kind; to be good friends to those around them, always on the lookout for and ready to support those in need of a word of encouragement or a listening ear.
We expect our pupils to be unfailingly courteous and polite; to have regard for the needs of others; to be responsible for the impact of their behaviour on those around them; to stand back, holding the door open, to allow adults through; to be particularly aware of the very young and the very old; not to ‘hog the pavement’ on school trips; to say “please” and “thank you” without prompting.
We expect our pupils to be honest, to act with integrity at all times and to understand and uphold the rule of law.
We encourage all members of the community to respect themselves, each other, their learning environment and the wider community. We expect our pupils not just to tolerate but to celebrate difference, to respect the right of others to hold differing beliefs or views and to develop an awareness of individual liberty. As our pupils become old enough to understand the characteristics protected by law, we look to them to challenge discrimination in all its forms and to foster healthy, positive relationships grounded in mutual respect.
We would like our pupils to appreciate the importance of, and to show, perseverance; to acquire a ‘growth mindset’ by understanding that intelligence can be developed; to embrace challenges; to persist in the face of setbacks; to see effort as the path to mastery; to learn from criticism;
to find lessons and inspiration in the success of others and, as a result, to reach ever-higher levels of achievement and a greater sense of free will.
We would like our pupils to become independent learners; to work hard; to be responsible, organised and to manage their belongings effectively. In the classroom, we would like them not only to make valid contributions, but also to be good listeners, who respect and encourage the efforts of their peers. We hope that, as a result of their lessons at school, our pupils will begin to take responsibility for their personal learning, reading around subjects that interest them, carrying out their own research and making full use of the many excellent resources available to them.
As a result, we would like our pupils to gain a growing sense of enquiry and wonder about the world around them; about the vast body of knowledge and skills that has brought mankind to where we are today – and about how much there is still to learn.
We expect our pupils to acquire selfknowledge by encountering both success and failure in an environment of support and encouragement, both at school and at home. Consequently, they should be ‘comfortable in their own skin’, full of self-confidence, yet always free of arrogance, and able to make sound judgements. We would like our pupils to become their best selves, not a second-hand version of someone else.
We aim to equip our pupils to lead by example and to recognise service as a powerful form of leadership; to be prepared to stand out from the crowd; to be the first to respond to someone in need; to stand up for what they believe to be right; to challenge what they know to be wrong; to risk making an unpopular decision, if they believe it to be for the greater good; to earn the trust and respect of others. We hope that our pupils will experience at an early age the opportunities and challenges of leadership.
Notwithstanding their confidence, our pupils are expected to retain a sense of humility; to be without arrogance; to be conscious of the advantages they enjoy and to show gratitude for them by putting them to best use by helping others. We hope that all our pupils will acquire a sense of the eternal and that this will inform their perspective of their place in the world.
Above all, we would like our pupils to be givers, not takers; to show generosity of spirit; to use their skills and talents first for the benefit of others. We hope that our students will leave their school with a strong sense of social responsibility, set on a path to become net contributors to society and to flourish as successful, conscientious and caring citizens of the world.

If your child is unwell please email: cla-absence@ thomas-s.co.uk and your child’s form teacher by 8.10am on the day, and each subsequent day thereafter that your child remains absent from school. This is extremely important as the school must follow up each morning on pupils who are not in school at the time of registration and who have not been reported as absent by the parent.
All pupils are expected to begin and end term on the stated dates. The school publishes term dates in advance and family holidays should be arranged to coincide with the school holidays. Published term dates can be found on the Thomas’s website: www.thomas-s. co.uk and through the TomCom app.
Pupils should not be absent from school for nonmedical reasons unless prior permission has been granted by Helen Stewart-Morgan, Senior Deputy Head, copying in Nathan Boller for information. Parents are asked to consider whether it is really necessary for their child to be absent. Routine medical and dental appointments should, wherever possible, be arranged outside the school day. The school must be notified of any absence, authorised or unauthorised, by emailing cla-absence@thomas-s.co.uk.
Permission for absence, except for sickness, is only given in exceptional circumstances. Unauthorised absences are recorded as such and must be reported in the school’s annual DfE return.
We offer all parents from Reception to Year 8 the option of After School Care which takes place in the Art Block after school every day until 6pm. Parents are able to book online through the school’s MSP. Parents are able to book regular long term slots or ad hoc sessions when needed (subject to availability).
In light of the possible misuse of aerosols and the ready availability of alternative non-aerosol products, we ask that pupils do not bring aerosol products into school.
Thomas’s Clapham is an Allergen Aware school. We have pupils with a wide range of allergies to different foods, including anaphylaxis if they come into contact with nuts/sesame or someone who has handled them, so we encourage a considered approach to food.
Thomas’s strives to be a nut-free environment but we do not claim to be ‘nut free’. The school asks staff and pupils not to bring any nuts (including pine nuts and peanuts) or sesame products into school. Where reasonably practical items that state ‘May contain nuts’ should not be brought into school.
Anaphylaxis UK advises that this is a pragmatic approach, for the following reasons:
• It would be impossible to provide an absolute guarantee that the school is nut-free. Pupils regularly bring in food from home and food bought on the way to school.
• There would be a risk that children with allergies might be led into a false sense of security.
• There is a strong case to be argued that children with food allergies will develop a better awareness and understanding of how to manage their allergies if they grow up in an environment where allergens may be present but, as at Thomas’s, are restricted and monitored, as much as is reasonably possible.
It should be acknowledged that, given current food manufacturing processes, it is impossible to guarantee that all products will be free from possible ‘traces of nuts’ and other allergens.
If your child has a food allergy or a specific dietary requirement, it is important to complete and update their Medical Form on My School Portal. The form can be changed as and when needed. Once the form has been completed an email is automatically sent to the School Nurse who is then able to update their details. Our Allergy and Anaphylaxis Policy is available under Information for Parents on My School Portal.
We believe that your time at Thomas’s should not end when you leave the school. Thomas’s Alumni aims to build an active association of past pupils, parents and staff so that they are part of the school community, for life.
Founded in 2021 to celebrate the 50th Year of Thomas’s London Day Schools, Thomas’s Alumni is an organisation which keeps past pupils, parents and staff, affectionately and collectively known as OTs (Old Thomasonians), in touch with each other and with the school through events, reunions and OT communications. The association provides a network for people who have been involved in a Thomas’s education so that they can reconnect with each other and with their particular school. We hope that by being a member of Thomas’s Alumni, you will be part of a family which will be of value to you as you progress through life.
Please visit the website: thomas-s.co.uk/alumni/ for more information or email: alumni@thomas-s.co.uk.
The school doors open at 8.10am and Registration takes place between 8.10am and 8.20am. To encourage pupil independence, we ask that parents only come into the building/classrooms as detailed below.
We ask that all parents vacate the building and school grounds by 8.20am to enable registration to take place. The first lesson of the day will start at 8.30am.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, you are welcome to enter the building to drop your child to their classroom. We ask that parents drop their child at the classroom door to aid a smooth and calm start to the school day.
In addition, on the first day of any school term you are welcome to drop your child off at their classroom.
On Mondays and Fridays you are welcome to enter the building and drop your child in the classroom.
We ask that parents drop their child at the classroom door to aid a smooth and calm start to the school day.
In addition, on the first day of any school term you are welcome to drop your child off at their classroom.
Children enter the building independently. If you need to talk to the Form Teacher, please email them –staff email addresses can be found on MSP (My School Portal).
On Fridays, you are welcome to enter the building and visit your child’s form room. Teachers are not available for meetings at this time unless otherwise arranged.
If your child arrives after the school day has started at 8.20am they must register in the School Office.
All pupils must say goodbye at the end of the school day. This ensures that each teacher is aware that the pupil has said goodbye, teaches good manners, and also marks the time that the safety and responsibility of the pupil has been transferred from the school to the parent/carer.
Pupils are dismissed from the following areas:
RECEPTION YEARS 1 AND 2 YEARS 3 AND 4 YEARS 5, 6, 7 AND 8
Time of dismissal 3.30pm 3.30pm 4.00pm 4.00pm
At the end of the school day Dragon’s Den and Mindfulness Place are closed to families. Clamber Close is open until 4.00pm and then we kindly ask that you leave, so that we can prepare the playground for after school clubs. Once the children have been dismissed by their teacher, then parents/carers must supervise their children at all times.
Please note:
• There is no parental access to the school building at the end of the school day.
• Once a pupil has been dismissed and care has been passed to the parent/carer, children must be closely supervised by the parent/carer whilst in the school grounds.
• Please vacate the playground promptly as this area is used for after school clubs.
For the children’s safety we need your authorisation if we are to allow your child to be collected by anyone else. Please introduce regular carers to the Form Teacher and ensure that the School Office has contact details for them. For occasional collections, or for a change made during the school day, please email the Form Teacher.
We request your cooperation in arriving punctually to collect your children as teachers will need to prepare for after school clubs and meetings. Please telephone the School Office to let us know if you have been delayed. The school will always look after your child in an emergency and the child will stay with the teacher dismissing them until they are collected.
Please ensure your child’s uniform is clean and tidy. Shirts should be tucked in, shoes polished and hair longer than shoulder length tied back. Extreme versions of any hairstyle are not appropriate for school. Nail varnish should not be worn. There are some uniform items parents do not see their children
wearing often e.g. art smock and swimming costumes. From time to time please do check if they still fit.
Pupils in Years 7 and 8 are allowed to wear one small pair of gold or silver stud earrings at school. This is a privilege and in line with Thomas’s Battersea and Thomas’s College; children lower down the school are not permitted to wear earrings. No other jewellery is allowed at school.
We have weekly assemblies in school which reinforce our sense of community and provide an opportunity for each area of the school to gather together, to sing together, to pray together and to share important messages and celebrations.
Dates of Lower School Class Assemblies are published in the calendar. These take place in the Hall and parents are welcome to attend their child’s class assembly.
Other Lower School, Middle School and Upper School assemblies are taken by a range of staff, pupils or visiting speakers and are internal pupil events.
At Thomas’s Clapham, our aim is to develop a whole school culture of excellent behaviour which provides a supportive and safe environment for all to learn and thrive.
Thomas’s Clapham believes that all members of the community should Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Calm, and Be Ready. Our positive behaviour management approach is underpinned by a shared understanding of these four rules and our school values, the promotion of calm and consistent adult behaviour and a focus on recognition and relationships.
Please refer to our Behaviour Policy and School Supplement on our website for detailed information.
(see also Scooters)
Cycling to school is encouraged, and there is a bicycle rack in the playground opposite Clamber Close. Children must walk and push their bikes once inside the school grounds. We feel that helmets are essential, as is reflective clothing and lights in darker months. The Lower School pupils can park their scooters opposite Clamber Close, the Middle and Upper School pupils are to use the scooter rack on Pitch 1 & 2 in the playground.
All bicycles must be padlocked and then taken home at the end of each day. The school accepts no liability for loss or damage to bicycles whilst in the school grounds.
We ask all parents and pupils to be respectful of our neighbours and those using the roads and pathways in the area.
Due to the complexities and number of children with severe allergies, we do not allow cakes, or other foods or sweets, to be brought into school for birthdays. All children are made to feel special when it is their birthday and class teachers will ensure that birthdays are remembered and celebrated.
We hope that children’s birthday parties are not held during the week as they can produce a class of very tired and over-excited children. If your child distributes party invitations at school we ask that no one in the class is left out. If you are having a smaller party please issue invitations out of school.
Pupils are provided with a mid-morning snack. The mid morning snack item is published along with the weekly menu which can be found on TomCom.
At Thomas’s Clapham, staff, parents and pupils work together to create a happy and safe learning environment. Bullying, whether verbal, physical,
emotional or online, is not tolerated. It is everyone’s responsibility to promote an anti-bullying culture and to deal with any incidents quickly and effectively.
We always encourage children and parents to promptly highlight the problem to staff so that difficult circumstances are not left to grow bigger. If you believe your child is being bullied, please inform us at the earliest opportunity. Pupils in Year 3 upwards can also report any unkindness using the ‘Virtual Worry Box’ on their iPad.
Kirsty Whitwood, Deputy Head - Wellbeing and Health, leads on this aspect and works closely with the pupil ‘Be Kind’ Committee. Please refer to our Anti-Bullying Policy for detailed information.
When the children travel off-site on trips or to swimming lessons (starting in Year 1) on coaches or school buses, wearing seat belts is compulsory.
There is a Thomas’s bus run for children in Years 7 and 8 that join the school from Thomas’s Fulham. If you partake in the bus run it is essential that your child is ready at the collection time so that the bus run is not delayed. Please remember to advise the driver, or Michele Carpenter (mcarpenter@thomas-s.co.uk) on days that the bus service is not required. The bus will leave at 4.15pm at the latest (5.15pm on a late bus day). If your child is not ready by that time the bus will not be able to wait and parents will need to come to school to collect them.
Michele Carpenter is Thomas’s London Day Schools Transport Manager and coordinates all school buses. She is based at Thomas’s Battersea and can be contacted on 07737 860301 or via email.
David Hallas, Assistant Head - Operations and Services, is Thomas’s Clapham’s contact for buses.
Children in Years 7 and 8 will need a scientific calculator – one that has functions such as SIN, COS, TAN and LOG and that can cope with numbers in standard index form. There are restrictions on some of the models available and we recommend a model which is available from our PTA School Shop.
You can access the school calendar through the TomCom App. By clicking on the dates, you will be able to see what is scheduled for each day. You will also be able to add important dates to your personal calendar.
Carlos Sanchez is our Caretaker who works from 10.00am to 8.00pm Monday to Friday, and Carl Whittaker is our Caretaker - Grounds and Security who works from 6.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. You will see Carl on duty at the entrance each morning and afternoon.
We believe passionately in engendering a sense of social responsibility and a culture of being ‘givers not takers’ at Thomas’s Clapham. Please see the Charities Policy on MSP and look out for information from the school and the PTA about how you and your families can engage in charitable activities throughout the year.
Please update any change of address and telephone number, for yourself or your child’s emergency contact via My School Portal (MSP). This is so that our records are up to date and the school is able to contact you in the event of an emergency.
All pupils in Years 6 to 8 change for PE activities in the changing rooms. All other pupils change in classrooms. Red bags should be kept in the specified areas and should only be in the changing rooms during PE lessons.
There are a number of choirs, orchestras, ensembles and groups that are open to children of all abilities, from Year 1 upwards.
Mini groups (open to Year 1 and 2) take place at break times and are termly due to demand. All other music clubs and choirs are a year long commitment.
Details are published with the clubs programme in the Michaelmas Term and you will be able to sign up along with the other clubs.
Please contact Mrs Claire Byrne, Music Administrator, (cbyrne@thomas-s.co.uk) if you would like further information.
Our local church is St Luke’s, Thurleigh Road, SW12 8RQ. Our church services are central to our Assemblies programme and play an important part of school life. Dates of our Lower School and Prep School church services are published in the calendar and parents are very welcome to attend. We ask parents to respect this as a calm and reflective place for the community and to refrain from bringing food and drink in with them, using phones, taking photos and standing up during musical performances.
There are a number of clubs which operate after school hours every term to stimulate and develop a child’s interests and talents inside and outside the curriculum. David Hallas, Assistant Head - Operations and Services, coordinates the clubs programme.
The full clubs programme is published in advance of each coming term and includes details of charges for each club. Charges for clubs are added to your school account at the end of the term. On occasion, some external club providers may invoice parents directly.
All pupils staying for after school activities from 4.00pm are provided with a snack (including a fruit alternative) by the school. This is not a full tea; the aim is to stave off hunger until the children get home. No snacks can be brought from home. This is because we have a number of children with significant food allergies and medical conditions.
Parents should monitor that a child does not become over-burdened with additional activity.
We expect everybody – staff, pupils, parents and anyone connected to the school to be kind, honest, considerate, trustworthy, courteous, responsible, cooperative, friendly and hardworking.
We should all respect others’ feelings and be ready to help; give praise and encouragement; be sympathetic to others’ needs; try our best; tell the truth; be reliable in carrying out our duties; be polite; show respect for property; be punctual and be ready for lessons.
Children should show kindness and courtesy to all members of the school community; work to the best of their ability; ask for help when necessary; listen carefully and involve themselves fully in the life of the school.
Teachers are expected to promote a happy environment for their pupils; ensure the safety of their pupils to the best of their ability; establish high expectations and maintain appropriate behaviour in their lessons; deliver the best possible lessons to their pupils through careful planning, assessment and
relevant feedback and show courtesy at all times in their dealings with parents.
Parents should support the school in their children’s education and discipline; show courtesy at all times in their dealings with all members of the school community; observe the given term dates and ensure their children’s punctual delivery and collection.
The school takes pride in the quality of the teaching and pastoral care provided to the pupils. The school believes in openness and it welcomes suggestions and comments from parents. It also takes concerns and complaints seriously. The school’s Complaints Policy can be found on My School Portal or you can request a copy from the School Office.
We are keen to promote an awareness of the community, both within the school and the local area. We work closely with many organisations including St Luke’s Church, SPIRES, Ace of Clubs, Friends of Clapham Common, Trinity Hospice and Thomas’s Foundation to forge valuable links providing opportunities for all at Thomas’s Clapham.
We have a Critical Incident Policy in place which is reviewed regularly. This includes our response to local terrorist attacks or threat. Our Critical Incident Management Team meet each term, led by David Hallas, Assistant Head – Operations and Services.
The school community undertakes Lockdown practices to ensure that all pupils and staff are familiar with the procedures in the event of an incident requiring the school to go into Lockdown.
Engagement with others, ideas and action A culture of thinking
An attitude of awareness
Our Learning Habits
Please refer to the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Policy on MSP.
We hold Curriculum Evenings at the beginning of the school year for Reception to Year 8 parents, when all information regarding the pupils’ programme for the year: content, routines and expectations, are outlined.
A Curriculum Guide for your child’s year group can be found on MSP (My School Portal) under Clapham Parent Information/Curriculum. This gives a brief overview. Homework guidance is also available within the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Policy on MSP. Subject specific handbooks have also been created to share more about your child’s learning at school. Parent handbooks for each subject and each year have been created so that parents have more information about how to support their children at home. These will be shared at the start of the year.
Throughout the pupils’ time at Thomas’s Clapham, tools are provided to develop metacognition, which is the process of thinking about one’s own thinking and learning. Our bespoke Learning Habits are used to aid this. Based on educational research, these are a visual, child-friendly representation of advanced learning techniques.
At an age appropriate way, the four Learning Habits encourage learners to:
• Understand why and how they are learning and thinking
• Think deeply, ask big questions, make connections within other areas of learning and develop resilience
• Create a common language and understanding to be built upon
Thinking Frames and Thinking Routines are also used as tools to support and develop metacognition. These tools, which become part of everyday classroom life right from Reception to Year 8, help pupils’ thinking and learning to become visible.
The Thinking Frames are used to:
• Support learning through strengthening neural connections
• Make specific cognitive processes explicit
• Provide a common language focused around thinking
The Thinking Routines are a short series of steps that guide pupils’ thought processes and encourage the consolidation and internalisation of information in a meaningful and coherent way.
Additionally, the routines lead to a growth in confidence, improvement in critical thinking and to open discussions.
Pupils are explicitly taught the following subjects:

At Thomas’s we have always taken data security very seriously, as we appreciate the consequences of data being shared inappropriately or incorrectly and the implications this can have on everybody involved.
Thomas’s London Day Schools aim to ensure that all personal data about staff, pupils, parents, visitors and any other individual is collected, stored and processed in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018). This applies to all personal data, regardless of whether it is in paper or electronic format.
Full details can be found in our Privacy Notice and Data Protection Policies which are available on MSP. Any queries should be sent to compliance@thomas-s.co.uk
Digital tools are used throughout the school to develop understanding and deepen knowledge and skills. Online resources and apps provide opportunities to learn, create, produce, evaluate, reflect and collaborate. We will continue to adapt to rapid changes in technology and ensure that pupil use of digital tools is purposeful and engaging and that online safety is at the fore.
The school operates strict filters to ensure pupils may only access suitable sites.
The school uses different digital learning platforms for the children. Tapestry and Seesaw are used for pupils in Reception, Seesaw for pupils in Years 1 to 4 and Google Classroom for pupils in Years 5 to 8. All pupils in the Prep School (Years 3 to 8) have a Google Drive account where they can save, share and collaborate on work. Pupils in Years 6 to 8 are given a school email account (to use within school as a way to communicate with staff/ peers) when they have been taught email etiquette and their appropriate use of this is monitored. Children will use lots of different websites to allow them to learn new content in engaging ways. As a school we use a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) process to help us identify and minimise the data protection risks of a website. Some of these need the children to sign in with their school Google account (hence sharing their name). Others state that if a pupil is under 13 that the School will provide consent and agree that the pupils’ activities while on the Service are subject to their Terms of Service. You will be sent information about these sites and asked for consent for us to use them with your child if relevant.
If you walk your dog to school there is a ‘dog park’ with hooks by the front doors. Alternatively, they should be tied to the railings on the side of the school before entering the playground. Please do not leave your dog tied up for long periods of time. Dogs that are anxious and bark continuously when left alone should not be left outside the school for any period of time.
Dogs are not permitted in the playground.
Please only bring your dog if they are used to being around small children and other dogs.
Please ensure children have all items required for the day. We understand that occasionally a child may have forgotten something and it will need to be dropped into school and we have a box in the front entrance for these items. Upon arrival at the school:
• Ring the gate buzzer and notify the Receptionist that you are dropping off an item
• Upon entering the school entrance, place the item (clearly labelled with name and class) in the box (just behind the pillar)
• Ensure you have emailed the teacher to let them know you have dropped an item off – children will then collect their item from the box
We are unable to guarantee that items will be collected in time so please be realistic with timescales.
Early Risers takes place in the Library. It is a time for supervised reading from 7.45am until school starts. It is there to help parents who might need to drop their child at school before the doors open at 8.10am. It runs every day of the term and there is no charge for this service.
Pupils should not bring their own electronic toys or games to school. Kindles, SMART watches and electronic readers may be brought into school but should be clearly named and wi-fi or internet access should be disabled. The parent of any child bringing in a Kindle, E-reader or SMARTwatch should complete an online Electronic Devices Agreement form to get the approval of the school. Forms are distributed to parents for completion and return at the start of the academic year. All residential trips for Years 4 - 8 are electronic free. This includes all SMART watches. Air tags or other tracking devices must also not be attached to children’s luggage or clothing.
If you wish to contact any member of staff to discuss something please send them an email. A list of staff email addresses can be found on MSP (My School Portal) which is accessed through TomCom.
This is the most efficient method of contacting staff. However, please consider their full teaching schedules; immediate responses cannot be expected.
We feel that lengthy email communications are not always desirable. Do consider if a phone call or requesting a meeting would be better.
In the interests of staff welfare, it is practice at Thomas’s Clapham that the staff do not, except in an emergency, send or reply to emails internally after 6.00pm during the week, and not at all at weekends. We ask that parents embrace the same strategy when communicating to the school. There may be occasions when matters of importance need to be addressed ‘after hours’ and we always commit to responding to a parent email within 24 hours during the week, and within 48 hours if an email is received at the beginning of a weekend.
Children from Reception to Year 3 do not need pencil cases – all stationery required will be provided by Thomas’s.
Children in all year groups should bring in a clearly named, refillable water bottle.

It is just about impossible to produce a comprehensive list of all the events which will happen during the year. We give as much notice as we can to enable you to organise your diaries; many events happen during the day. ‘Peak seasons’ for events tend to be in the run up to Christmas and the latter half of the Summer Term. Please refer to our School Calendar on MSP on a regular basis.
In line with our Safeguarding and Online Safety responsibilities as a school, we use filtering and monitoring software to keep pupils safe when using their school devices - both at school and at home.
Filtering systems: block access to harmful sites and content. This could be legal or illegal, and includes pornography, promotion of self-harm or suicide, misogyny, racism, fake news and extremist views.
Monitoring systems: identify when a user accesses, types or searches for certain types of harmful content on school devices. The school is then alerted to any concerning content (e.g. a search term, content in a Google Doc or email) so that we can intervene and respond.
All staff are trained on Online Safety, including the filtering and monitoring procedures we have in place. They also actively monitor what is happening on internet enabled devices in their classroom and use our existing safeguarding procedures to report any problems or concerns.
We encourage parents to take an active interest in the use of their school devices while using them at home. If you witness or suspect that any unsuitable material has been accessed then please report this to Kirsty Whitwood (kwhitwood@thomas-s.co.uk).
We undergo regular fire drills to familiarise children and staff with our evacuation procedures. Parents should also familiarise themselves with the procedures which can be found in the Information for Visitors Booklet in the School Office.
Our primary evacuation site is the playground.
If you are in the building when the alarm sounds please make your way to the assembly point in the playground.
We hope that your child’s first day at Thomas’s will be an exciting one for you all, even if there are a few butterflies around! You will be greeted by staff who will point you in the right direction. The door of each class is marked with its name.
In line with all schools across the country, we promote the Fundamental British Values of:
• Respect for the rule of law
• Individual liberty
• Democracy
• Mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs
Thomas’s Clapham supports families in their senior school selection process through a structured program of events and guidance. Every other year, the Senior Schools’ Fair welcomes representatives from over fifty schools, encompassing co-educational, single-sex, day, and boarding options from both local and wider regions, for an informative evening with parents.
In the alternate year, a Senior Schools’ Panel evening offers parents the valuable insights of up to six Headteachers on the topic of school choice, followed by a question-and-answer session.
The Head of Future Schools provides a dedicated presentation to Year 5 parents in September, outlining the 11+ and 13+ pathways for day and boarding schools. Additionally, all Year 5 parents benefit from an individual meeting with the Head of Future Schools to discuss their child’s specific senior school options. We continue to offer tailored advice and support as required thereafter.
To ensure the most appropriate recommendations, formal guidance on senior school selection is provided after Year 5, informed by a comprehensive understanding of each pupil’s developing abilities and strengths. Recognising the individual pace of development, accurate school suitability assessments are best made at this stage.
We remind parents that the responsibility for registering their child(ren) with future schools lies with them.
In the Prep School a number of sporting fixtures will take place against other schools.
The fixtures are published with the school calendar on the TomCom App.
This is of paramount importance; regular inspections and risk assessments of the school, its building and playground are undertaken.
David Hallas, Assistant Head - Operations and Services is Thomas’s Clapham’s Health and Safety Lead. Tasmin Ikin (tikin@thomas-s.co.uk) is the Group Health and Safety Lead across Thomas’s London Day Schools.
Our Health and Safety Policy is available on MSP.
One of the areas on the TomCom app is Highlights, where we upload photos of ‘highlights’ of the school day for all parents to enjoy.
Thomas’s was founded in 1971 as a Kindergarten in Pimlico, expanding to include a Prep School in Cadogan Gardens in 1977 when David Thomas joined his wife Joanna in running the schools.
In 1981 Thomas’s Kensington in Cottesmore Gardens opened, this was expanded further in 2002 following the acquisition of Lady Eden’s School in Victoria Road. In 2008 an additional building was purchased to enhance music and drama facilities for Thomas’s Kensington. The school in Cadogan Gardens moved to Battersea High Street in October 1990 while the second Kindergarten opened in 1992 in St Mary’s Church, Battersea.
Thomas’s Clapham opened in September 1993 and then Thomas’s Fulham followed in September 2005 with 97 pupils. From 11 pupils in 1977 Thomas’s has grown to over 2000 pupils. In 2015 Thomas’s Academy opened in Fulham. This was the former New King’s Primary School and is a genuine partnership between the independent and maintained sectors. Thomas’s Putney Vale opened in September 2021 as a senior school and Thomas’s College opens in September 2025.
Thomas’s London Day Schools (TLDS) is a private limited company. The Thomas family hold a majority share alongside a long term investor, Oakley Capital, who took a minority stake in March 2023. Tobyn and Ben Thomas are Directors and Executive Principals. David and Joanna Thomas are the Founding Principals and although no longer directors they maintain an interest in the activities of all the schools. You will see them at some school events.

Future holiday dates are published in advance and are available on our website. All pupils are expected to begin and end term on the stated dates and family holidays should be arranged to coincide with the school holidays.
Information will be given at the Curriculum Evenings in September.
A homework timetable for Years 5 - 8 will be published in September. Years 5 - 8 have digital planners, accessible through their iPads to record the homework set each day. All homework is set by subject teachers through Google Classroom. Parents can sign up via Guardian Summaries to see specific homework details. Information is given to parents as to how to sign up for this.
Thomas’s operates a House system for all pupils and staff. The House system encourages healthy competition between groups at the school. There are four houses (all famous Thomas’s) and each has a colour:
Thomas’s Clapham celebrates neurodiversity and understands that some children may benefit from specific adaptations and scaffolded support. This may be due to a specific learning difference, having English as an Additional Language, or a unique gift or talent. The Inclusion and Enrichment Team is led by Esther Sharkey-Yun, who is supported by three Inclusion and Enrichment Teachers; Rachel Doherty, Laura Cooper and Katie Hubber.
Pupils’ needs are identified as early as possible through classroom based assessment, observation, monitoring of progress and analysis of data. If staff members feel that any child would benefit from additional support, they complete a referral to the referral committee and a discussion takes place on the best course of action to support the pupil. When necessary internal screeners are completed to gain a deeper understanding of a child’s learning profile and where appropriate, intervention is used to target specific areas. We work closely with external agencies to ensure any additional needs are met at the appropriate level, in order to achieve the best outcomes. More Able pupils are identified within all academic and co-curricular subjects. Lesson content and activities are adapted in order to provide stretch and challenge for the More Able. Teachers ensure higher order questioning, an enquiry-based approach and high quality resources are used to extend the thinking of identified pupils.
Pupils are allocated a House when they join Thomas’s and remain in this House throughout their time with us. Siblings are allocated to the same House.
In the event of your child having a fever they should not return to school until their temperature has been normal for 24 hours. In the event of your child having diarrhoea or vomiting they should have not had any events of vomiting or diarrhoea for 48 hours.
If a pupil falls ill during the school day we will contact you to make you aware. If we are unable to contact you we will use the emergency contact details provided. We would therefore ask that you nominate emergency contacts that are local to school and ensure that the details we hold for them are always up to date.
If you are going away for any reason during term time and leaving your child in the care of another adult, it is vital that the In Loco Parentis form on MSP is completed so the Head, Area Leader and School Office are informed in writing.
Thomas’s Clapham has a fully qualified paediatric nurse: Nurse Maine Taylor-Chappell (mtaylorchappell@ thomas-s.co.uk). In addition to the School Office team, PE staff and many other members of staff hold first aid qualifications and training is updated regularly.
When a child has had an accident in school, or in the playground, the details are recorded on the school system with particular reference to head injuries. All head injuries are reported to parents via email and the child is monitored for the remainder of the day.
In the event of a serious emergency requiring urgent medical attention or an ambulance summoned, parents will be notified immediately. If the school is unable to contact a parent, a senior member of staff or the School Nurse would accompany the child to hospital.
Children only in Year 7 and 8 are allowed to wear earrings at school. They must be small gold or silver stud earrings and only one earring in each ear. The children must put tape over their earrings or remove them for all sporting activities.
This is a privilege for Years 7 and 8, in line with Thomas’s Battersea and the College; children lower down the school are not permitted to wear earrings. No other jewellery is allowed at school.
If a parent wishes for their child in any year group other than Years 7 and 8 to have their ears pierced, this should only be done at the start of the long holiday so that earrings can be removed once term restarts.
If children need to use the lift, they must seek permission from a member of staff and they must have one other pupil with them.
Lost Property is managed by our team of GAP Assistants.
All named items of lost property are returned to children’s classrooms on a regular basis. Unnamed items are displayed at the side of the school from 8.05am to 8.25am and 3.15pm to 4.15pm (weather permitting).
Please assist us by ensuring that all belongings and uniform are clearly named, and by checking regularly that name labels have not faded and are clearly legible.
Please remember to remove name tags and replace with name labels of your child when purchasing items from our PTA Nearly New Uniform sales.
Any unnamed lost property is disposed of at the end of each term.
Each child is given a Thomas’s Book Bag in their house colour when they join the Lower School. Replacement bags can be requested from the Head of Admissions (gjones@thomas-s.co.uk) and the charge for the replacement bag will be added to your school account.
Morning snack and lunch is prepared daily on site and provided by the Harrison’s catering team.
Pupils are provided with a mid-morning snack. Children have a choice of milk or water to drink with their midmorning snack. The mid-morning snack is fruit three times per week.
Lunch is a two course meal served in the Dining Rooms. Pupils in Reception to Year 2 are served family service and supervised by members of staff. Pupils in Years 3 to 8 have a canteen style service with staff supervising in the Dining Rooms. We encourage pupils to try new food and to eat a good portion. Fruit is offered each day as an alternative to dessert.
The menu for mid-morning snacks and lunch is published on the ‘Need to Know’ section of the TomCom App every week.
All children taking part in a 4pm club or activity after school are provided with a light snack, including a fruit alternative, by the school.
All medication is to be handed to the School Nurse and a medication form filled in – children must not carry their medicine in their bags, nor may it be left in the classrooms unless the School Nurse has approved and their form teacher is aware. The only exceptions to this rule is AAI’s (Auto Adrenaline Injectors) and Salbutamol Inhalers.
Medication Forms can be found on MSP (My School Portal) under Information for Parents -> Forms.
If your child is going on a residential trip a document will be shared with your prior to the trip - please ensure you read this document which details all information regarding medication on the trip.
We are a ‘smart phone free’ school. Children cannot therefore bring in smartphones. However, children in Year 6-8 are permitted to bring ‘brick’ mobile phones to school. Parents must sign a Mobile Phone Agreement form. The children with phones are usually those who walk to and from school without an adult or who get the bus from Fulham.
Phones must be turned off and handed to the Form Teacher on arrival and collected at the end of the day. Mobile phones are not permitted on school trips whether a day trip or a residential trip.
We politely request that parents do not use mobile phones in the school building.
Children can wear fitness trackers and watches at school but they must have cellular connections or the ability to connect to the internet turned off.
Children should not bring money into school unless for an authorised activity.
Pupils can start individual instrumental lessons as young as Year 1 or 2 (subject to a successful trial lesson, approval from the child’s form tutor and a space being available) on the following instruments: Cello, Guitar, Piano, Recorder, Violin.
We offer the following instruments for pupils in Year 3 or above:
Cello, Clarinet, Drum Kit, Flute, Guitar, Harp, Saxophone, Trumpet, Orchestra Percussion, Piano, Recorder, Violin.
We offer singing lessons from Year 4 and above. Please contact Mrs Claire Byrne, Music Administrator, (cbyrne@thomas-s.co.uk) if your child is interested in individual music lessons.
My School Portal is an online system which can be accessed from the TomCom App. Each guardian will have an individual single sign on login to the TomCom App, MSP (My School Portal) and all other systems. MSP will provide access to booking systems for parents’ evenings, buses and clubs and also access to all other systems. MSP will also provide general information about the school and more specific information about your child, such as timetables, teacher contacts, attendance records, academic reports.
Nearly New Uniform Sales are run by our PTA and a team of parent volunteers. They take place on many Thursday mornings during term time from 8.10am to 8.30am in the Low Dining Room. Cash and card payments are accepted. Dates of Nearly New Uniform Sales can be found on the Calendar. All monies raised are donated to the school’s chosen charity of the year.
If you have any items you wish to donate to the Nearly New Uniform Sales please bring them to a sale and hand them to a volunteer. Please ensure all items are clean, not torn or ripped, not pen-marked and zips are working and that all old name tags have been removed. Shoes (except dance shoes), tights, socks, judo kit and swimwear are not accepted.
If you purchase an item from a Nearly New Uniform Sale please ensure it is renamed clearly.
Parents will receive important messages through the TomCom App. These messages will appear on the parent’s mobile device, similar to that of a text message. For example, the school will use this messaging system to communicate important information, such as the late arrival of a class returning from a trip or last minute changes to arrangements for sports fixtures. The Need to Know is every parent’s personal inbox for important messages from the school.
Our weekly ‘News’ is circulated to parents every Friday via the TomCom App. The News summary contains a wealth of information, including a message from the Head, advance notices and celebratory reports of events. You will receive a message on your mobile which will indicate that the school News is ready to read. We would encourage parents to read this news every week.
Unfortunately, these unwanted visitors are part of any school life and we would ask you to check your child’s hair regularly and treat if, and when, necessary. Thomas’s Guidance on the Prevention of Head Lice can be found as Appendix 3 of the Thomas’s Medical Conditions and Medications Policy on MSP.
Further information and guidance can be found on the NHS website: nhs.uk/conditions/head-lice-and-nits
Thomas’s Clapham’s School Nurse is a Registered Paediatric Nurse. Nurse Maine Taylor-Chappell works from 8.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Nurse Maine is based in the Medical Room and can be contacted on: 020 7326 9343 or by email: mtaylorchappell@thomas-s. co.uk .
Thomas’s Clapham strives to be a nut and sesame free school but we do not claim to be ‘nut free’. We have a number of children who will have an anaphylactic reaction if they come into contact with nuts or sesame, or someone who has handled them. This can be extremely serious, and in the worst case, fatal. It is therefore essential that parents do not bring any nuts or sesame, or items containing these ingredients into the school building or the grounds surrounding the school. Unfortunately, it is now common practice for many food companies to cover themselves legally and state that the food item ‘may contain traces of nuts’ even if the product does not. However, we ask that parents do not bring anything into the school or the grounds surrounding the building that displays this warning.
The School Office opens at 7.30am and closes at 6.00pm Monday to Thursday and from 7.30am to 5.30pm on Fridays during term time.
Please only call the School Office to change collection arrangements or convey a message to your child in an emergency. Arrangements should be made before the school day starts or an email sent to class teachers.
The Finance Office is based in Ringwood and can be contacted on 01425 481500.
New technologies have become integral to the lives of children and young people in today’s society both within school and in their lives outside school.
Children, when supervised by a teacher, have access to pre-approved websites and these are used to enhance many lessons across the curriculum. We would suggest that you install filters on any home devices to which your child may have access. Information on this can be found on the Online Safety Page on MSP (My School Portal).
Responsible use of the internet and devices, both in and outside school, is discussed in Form Times, Computing lessons and through the PSHE programme. The school rules have been adapted for keeping children safe online. It is hoped that internet access outside school is appropriately supervised.
The school is concerned about the rise in online unkind behaviour nationally and works with parents to ensure this does not endanger the safety, security and wellbeing of pupils at Thomas’s Clapham.
There is a wealth of information on how Online Safety is approached at Thomas’s Clapham, along with useful links and tips to encourage safe internet use at home on MSP (My School Portal) for parents. We also hold an annual Online Safety talk for parents with an outside expert and publish regular News articles.
At Thomas’s we provide pupils with regular, challenging, enjoyable and safe opportunities to learn in the outdoor environment. In the Lower School the pupils take part in ‘Woodland Adventure’ exploring curriculum based topics. A ‘Young Explorers’ programme is offered to Years 3 & 4 who experience a variety of outdoor activities such as sailing and bushcraft. These are led by our Outdoor Department. In addition, Year 4 have a 3 night residential trip during the Summer term and Years 5 and 6 each spend a week at Thomas’s Daheim in Austria during the Lent term.
At Thomas’s Clapham we are committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment for everyone. As part of this, we set expectations about the conduct and behaviour of all members of our community, including the families of children at the School. When you accept a place for your child at Thomas’s it is the start of a partnership in which good working relationships between staff and parents are essential. Please refer to the Parent Code of Conduct available on MSP for
further information about how we expect parents to interact with the School and behave towards and communicate with other members of the School community, including School staff, representatives of the School and other pupils or parents – in person or online.
Parents/carers are respectfully advised that in the interests of courtesy and safety they should not make telephone calls or use any mobile devices in classrooms or communal areas except with explicit permission.
We are aware that parents at Thomas’s have a number of common interest communication groups that are hosted on social media platforms (such as WhatsApp). These groups are administered by parents and are not considered by Thomas’s to be official communication channels, or endorsed by the schools.
Where a member of Thomas’s staff is a member of a parent group, this is in their capacity as a parent/carer of a Thomas’s pupil. Any communication they share will be their personal opinion and shall not be considered to reflect the views of Thomas’s. Thomas’s will not monitor the groups or communicate with parents via any WhatsApp group or other social media platform.
Thomas’s Foundation partners with over 30 schools and organisations in the local boroughs. The Volunteer Readers’ Programme supports children locally by arranging volunteers to read 1:1 with children each week. Thomas’s Clapham works with primary schools in Wandsworth and Lambeth, where, despite many improvements over the last few years, academic success is below the national average.
If you would like to volunteer for Thomas’s Foundation and are able to offer 1-1.5 hours per week please e-mail info@thomassfoundation.org.uk to be connected with Lucy van Straubenzee, who will be able to give you further information on how you can help support the Volunteer Readers’ Programme.
Thomas’s Foundation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All volunteers will be required to have an enhanced DBS check and work in accordance with our safeguarding/child protection policies and procedures.
For more information about Thomas’s Foundation please visit thomassfoundation.org.uk/
The parking area within the school grounds is allocated for staff parking.
Please consider our neighbours when parking in the surrounding streets. Do not park on corners, in disabled bays, too close to junctions or block the entrance to school.
A plea to those of you that live near to school: please walk, cycle or scoot whenever possible.
Each child has their own photo gallery which can be found on the TomCom App. The photo gallery is personalised to the parent’s child and will gradually fill up with photos throughout the academic year. The gallery features three categories, ‘Every Day’, ‘Formal’ and ‘Productions’. Parents will be able to download their Every Day and Production photos for free. There is an option to give a small donation to Thomas’s Foundation, if parents wish to. There will be a fee to purchase the formal photographs. The formal photos consist of class and individual photographs and are taken by our inhouse photographer once a year. If a photo of someone else’s child accidentally ends up
in the wrong gallery, the parent can click on a report button which sends an alert email to the school. The School then redirects the image to the correct gallery. If a parent wants to purchase prints, the App provides the option to buy prints through our third party partner, Print Works.
Throughout your child’s time at Thomas’s, we may use images and videos to record their progress and celebrate their achievements. Thomas’s employs professional photographers who capture images of the children throughout their time at the schools. Staff also take photographs of the pupils’ activities. Images and videos provide an illustration of the children’s school lives and of our curriculum. They are celebratory and can inspire pupils.
We may use photographs of your child for internal school or parent communications, on TomCom, or in printed material such as a school magazine or prospectus. If we wish to use a photograph of your child in external marketing or publications we will contact you to ask for your permission.
Further information about how the school processes yours and your child’s personal information is available in the Privacy Notice and Policy on Taking, Storing and Using Images of Pupils, which can be found on MSP. Where you have such concerns, please contact the Digital Lead.
Parents are welcome to take photographs of (and where appropriate, film) their own children taking part in informal School events unless otherwise notified. Photography is not permitted at formal events such as School productions or Church or carol concerts.
When an event is held indoors, parents should be mindful of the need to use their cameras and filming devices with consideration and courtesy for pupils and others. Flash photography can disturb others in the audience, or even cause distress for those with medical conditions; the School therefore asks that it is not used at indoor events. No photograph or film taken in school may be published (this includes on any social media platform such as Instagram, Facebook, You Tube etc – regardless of privacy settings – or in any other way) without the explicit consent of each person recorded and, in the case of a child, without the explicit consent of their parents. For full details please see the Policy on Taking, Using and Storing Photographs of Pupils which is available on MSP.
Thomas’s Clapham uses a filming company to record annual year group productions.
Pupils in Year 5 to Year 8 use an online planner linked to Google Classroom on their ipad to record prep work and reminders for school. Pupils should keep this updated and refer to this each evening to ensure that they have completed all the appropriate tasks within the given timeline.
All of our playground equipment, including the climbing frames, are out of bounds before school and should not be used by younger siblings.
After school, Clamber Close is available for families waiting to collect a sibling until 4.00pm. Parents should wait until the duty member of staff arrives before entering Calmber Close. Parents/carers must supervise their children at all times. This will be closed if it is raining or the surfaces are wet.
The children go outside for a break mid-morning and after lunch. This is an unstructured, but fully supervised, time for the children to interact and occupy themselves independently. We feel that this is very important. Playground games are encouraged and children have access to a range of equipment. Reception children also have additional outside activities as part of their curriculum.
All school policies can be viewed on MSP (My School Portal), and key policies are available on the Thomas’s website: www.thomas-s.co.uk.
PSHE (Personal, Social and Economic Education) is taught in a dedicated lesson across the school each week. It is a spiral curriculum which revisits, reinforces and extends the following three themes in age appropriate ways:
• Health and Wellbeing: Healthy Lifestyles, Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing, Ourselves, Growing and Changing, Managing Risks and Personal Safety, Drugs Alcohol and Tobacco and Puberty and Sexual Health (Year 7-8).
• Relationships: Families and Friendships, Managing Hurtful Behaviour, Bullying, Abuse and Discrimination, Safe and Respectful Relationships, Consent, Respecting Self and Others, Contraception and Parenthood (Year 7-8).
• Living in the Wider World: Shared Responsibility, Communities, Media Literacy and Digital Resilience, Economic Wellbeing, Choices and Pathways, Money, Aspirations and Careers.
These lessons help our pupils to stay healthy and safe and provides them with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, both now and in the future.
Please look out for ongoing communication about the PSHE curriculum throughout the year and contact Kirsty Whitwood if you have any questions or feedback.
A happy and thriving school stems from its community: the children, their parents and the staff. The PTA provides an active but informal link between the school and its parents. Its predominant purpose is a community and charitable one: to encourage and bring together the class community, as well as the schoolwide community around larger events and support chosen charities.
The application process for Pupil Leadership positions is an important part of the transition between Year 7 and 8. At the end of Year 7 pupils are given the opportunity to apply for the following positions, which they commence at the beginning of Year 8:
• Heads of School
• Assistant Heads of School
• House Leaders
• Prefects (Including Learning and Teaching / Wellbeing / Equity, Diversity and Inclusion / Community / Sustainability / Sport / Arts / Technology)
Pupils are provided with defined roles and responsibilities and work with a designated teacher leader to fulfil them. There is also an expectation that all Year 8 Leaders role model the four school rules and work closely with a Lower or Middle School class as a Pupil Buddy.
Throughout the year there are calendared assessment points that allow us to measure the progress your child is making. This helps us plan effectively and gives us a clear idea of how your child is learning at that point in time. This will be shared with you in pupil reports and Parent Teacher Meetings. These meetings between teachers and parents are held throughout the year to discuss your child. However, members of staff will contact you throughout the year should they have any concerns or queries that they would like to discuss and we would ask that parents do the same. All dates of assessments will be shared with parents at the start of the year.
Thomas’s Clapham recognises the importance of pupil voice and during their time here pupils will have a range of opportunities to take on roles of responsibility and to have a say in aspects of school life in formal and informal contexts.
We have a number of formal Pupil Voice Committees which meet at least every half term and are made up of representatives from every class. These are:
• School Council
• Be Kind Committee
• Green Unicorns
• Digital Unicorns
PUSHCHAIRS/PRAMS
Prams and pushchairs should not be brought into school; they should be left outside the school building, by the front door.
Members of staff will be glad to speak to you or meet with you to discuss any individual matters. Please contact the particular person directly.
All pupils in Reception to Year 4 will be issued with a reading record at the start of the academic year. The reading record is a daily record of reading for pupils. This will be completed to reflect reading in school and parents/pupils should record any home reading. Should your child require a replacement reading record at any time during the year please contact Mrs Viki Stanton, Operations Manager (vstanton@thomas-s.co.uk).
Please note that a replacement reading record will be charged at cost to your school account.
Thomas’s Clapham strongly encourages positive recognition and reward.
All adults are encouraged to actively look for the positive and to use the following best practice approaches to consistent recognition:
• Positive conversations with pupils - verbal praise and positive feedback
• Positive notes in planners
• Positive phone calls or conversations with parents
• Sticky praise which refers back to the four school rules
Every teaching space should have a recognition board (e.g. a WOW Wall) which is used throughout lessons to recognise pupils who are going over and above.
In addition, the following reward systems are in place at Thomas’s Clapham:
• Golden Unicorns - Awarded to pupils of any age for outstanding work or behaviour. Pupils have a conversation with a member of SLT who awards the Golden Unicorn stickers.
• Above and Beyond Awards - Pupils can be nominated by any member of staff for going above and beyond in any area of school life. Pupils are publicly recognised and awarded with a certificate in assembly.
• House Values Points - Awarded to pupils for demonstrating any of the school values. The weekly total for each House is announced in assembly.
• BE Points - Awarded to pupils for actively demonstrating the four school rules. Pupils earn Be Point points which are collected individually for each of the four rules. BE Champions are awarded to one child per class each week in assembly for going above and beyond.
• House Points - These contribute to an individual’s House Points total and to the House Competition and are displayed on the screen on the top floor. Upper School pupils and their parents can view their rewards on MSP.
An electronic register is taken every morning at 8.20am and again after lunch. If your child arrives late for any reason (after 8.20am), or if you are collecting them early, the child must be signed in/out of the School Office to ensure our records are correct in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Safeguarding means protecting children from harm, so that they can grow up safe, happy and healthy. (Keeping Children Safe in Education)
Safeguarding is central to everything we do and is the responsibility of every member of staff at Thomas’s Clapham. We work to our values to ensure that every child, regardless of their age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation, has a right to equal protection from harm.
Our safeguarding team is made up of the following members of staff who work together to support and sustain a safe and child-centred approach:
For further information, please refer to the Safeguarding page on our school website and our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.
If you have any safeguarding questions or concerns, please speak to any member of our safeguarding team in person, on the phone or using the following email address: clasafeguarding@thomas-s.co.uk.

Our School Shop is run by our PTA and volunteer parents. It is located at the front of school and is open on ‘dry’ Tuesday and Friday mornings during term time from 8.10am to 8.25am.
The school shop sells school caps, Zaini winter bobble hats and headbands, stationery, water bottles, swimming hats, sports socks, mouthguards, hair accessories and many other items. Payment is by card only.
All profits from the School Shop go towards the school’s chosen charity of the year.
Thomas’s Clapham is divided into the following areas for organisational purposes.
There is a scooter park in the playground (Dragon’s Den side of the playground). Please make sure that if your child brings a scooter to school it is clearly named to avoid someone taking the wrong similar scooter home by mistake. Scooters are not to be brought into the school building or ridden in the school grounds. Scooters must be taken home each day and at the end of term. The school accepts no liability for loss or damage to scooters whilst in the school grounds.
In the interests of security there are security coded locks on the front and back doors of the main school building, the art building and the Reception building, as well as on the School Gates (see School Gates).
When entering the school grounds from the pavement gates, please press the bell and wait for the gate to be opened for you by a member of the School Admin team. Please ensure you look into the camera and speak clearly.
Anyone entering the school during the day must report to the Reception area of the School Office where they must sign in and out using our Inventory system and will be issued with a lanyard. Please ensure that all lanyards are returned to the School Office at the time of leaving the building and signing out.
We would ask that parents do not hold the gates or doors open for other parents or visitors to ensure that everyone entering or leaving the school building adheres to the correct procedure.
On occasions throughout the year, classes will host a Show and Share morning to enable the children to show what they have been learning and to share their achievements with parents/carers. Dates for these events are published in the school calendar.
A Sibling Room facility is available for Lower School children until 4.00pm. It is for use for those with siblings with a later pick-up time. The children will be collected from their usual pick-up locations at 4.00pm. If your child has a club at 4.00pm, they will go to the Club Room instead.
The school has a ‘no smoking’ policy and smoking is not permitted anywhere in the school building or grounds.
Very few social media apps are available for children under the age of 13. Our advice to pupils regarding the use of Social Media is to always use caution when sharing information or comments. We strongly recommend that parents do the same. Please do not discuss pupils, parents or teachers in any way that might cause offence. Any concerns should be brought to the school’s attention at the earliest possible opportunity to be resolved. For information about approaching age appropriate online safety protocols with your child we publish regular News articles and hold Online Safety talks hosted by outside experts.
You will find a full staff list on MSP (My School Portal).
We are fully committed to promoting sustainability throughout our school community. Within our ambitious five-year plan, sustainable resourcing and investment stand as one of our four crucial pillars. Our strategy encompasses a range of actions to reduce our ecological footprint and empower our students to become conscientious global citizens. These actions include pupil involvement, waste reduction, active travel, and developing pupils’ understanding of and interaction with biodiversity. We are proud holders
of both the Eco Schools Green Flag Award and the TFL STARS Travel Award, a programme that not only promotes sustainable travel options but also ensures the safety of our pupils.
Sustainability at Thomas’s Clapham is a communitywide endeavour. We highly value the perspectives and involvement of our pupils in promoting sustainability. Through our pupil-led Eco Committee and the Green Unicorns program, as well as our curriculum, we empower pupils to raise awareness of environmental issues and lead our school community towards greater sustainability. Staff members are encouraged to suggest new eco-friendly initiatives and to lead and manage these projects, enabling them to bring their unique ideas and passions to life. Similarly, our active PTA plays a critical role, offering unwavering support and engagement in advancing our green efforts.
We invite all members of our school community to actively participate in our sustainability initiatives, fostering responsible environmental stewardship. Together, we can create a thriving culture where sustainability is embraced as a way of life.
The Thomas’s Directory was created to enable parents to support each other’s businesses. It contains details of businesses and services run by or recommended by Thomas’s parents across the Thomas’s schools. An online version can be seen at: www.thedirectorythomas-s.co.uk
Day to day, it is optional for pupils in the Prep School to wear ties in the Michaelmas and Lent terms; please ensure they can tie them. All boys must own a tie and they will be expected to wear them for formal occasions e.g Carol Service, End of Year Celebrations. Parents will be notified about these occasions.
TomCom is a responsive website and mobile application which allows Thomas’s Schools to engage directly with parents, keeping them up to date and immersing them in their children’s journey through a centralised platform. Parents receive all the information they need from the school through the App. It’s essential that every parent has the App loaded onto their phones or desktops, as it will provide important notifications, the weekly news, the school calendar, a live feed showing daily highlights from around the school and a personalised photo gallery for each child. TomCom sits alongside MSP (My School Portal) where parents will be able access MSP through TomCom. N.B. Parents will not be able to communicate to the school using the App.
To avoid upset, pupils should not bring toys into school without prior permission from their Form Teacher.
The school grounds are closed to all parental vehicles at all times.
We ask that as many children as possible cycle or scoot to school whenever possible to promote healthy living and to keep the roads surrounding the school clear. Cycle and scooter racks are available within the school grounds – cycle racks are located opposite Clamber Close and scooter parking is available in the racks on the wall of the Dragon’s Den side of the playground. Helmets must be worn and children cycling after dark
must have working lights and wear a reflective vest/ jacket. Bicycles must be padlocked. Scooters and bicycles must be taken home at the end of each day. The school accepts no liability for loss or damage to bicycles or scooters whilst in the school grounds. We ask all parents to be respectful of our neighbours and all those using the roads and pathways in the area.
Pupils in Years 6, 7 and 8 (and Year 5 in the Summer Term) may walk to and from school unaccompanied by an adult. A permission form must be completed by a parent before a child is allowed to walk to or from school unaccompanied (form available on MSP).
It is essential that children walk in pairs or groups wherever possible.
Pupils in Years 3 and 4 are not allowed to walk home from school without an adult, even if they have an older sibling who is doing so.
Children will go on many trips, outings and visits to support areas of the curriculum. Trips are detailed on the calendar. Details of the trip and any costs are always given in advance.
We ask for your cooperation and assistance in encouraging a sense of pride and high standards by always ensuring that your child comes to school looking smart, tidy, and in clean uniform.
Shoulder length hair or longer should be tied back at all times, using the regulation hair ties: red or navy in the winter and pale blue and/or white in summer. Extreme versions of any hairstyle are not appropriate for school.
Uniform orders are to be placed online through Perry Uniform at perryuniform.co.uk. For comprehensive guidance on uniform requirements, please refer to the Thomas’s Clapham Lookbook, which is located in the
‘Need to Know’ section of your TomCom app. You can access the Lookbook tab below your ‘Need to Know’ Messages. It contains detailed photos of all uniform items, illustrating what each year group requires. The uniform list is presented at the end of the Lookbook for easy reference.
We also publish ‘What to Wear’ documents each term. Please ensure that your child has all the items needed for the relevant year group. Whilst the uniform is presented as girls and boys for guidance in terms of fit in the lookbook and uniform list, pupils can select either uniform list according to their preference.
Each child should have a coloured House t-shirt for PE lessons, Inter-House Games, and Sports Days. Parents will be informed in advance when children should wear their House t-shirts.
Becket - Blue Hardy - Green Lawrence - Yellow More - Red
Dance/Ballet uniform is supplied by Duo Dance, Half Moon Lane London, SE24 9JU info@duodance.co.uk www.duodance.co.uk or can be purchased at our TA Nearly New Uniform sales.
Every item of uniform or property should be clearly named and items should be checked regularly to ensure name tags are still attached and clearly legible. Bags, towels and art overalls can be given a more individual touch, e.g. a piece of ribbon or a sewon badge.
Shoulder length or longer hair should be tied back at all times, using the regulation hair ties: red or navy in the winter and pale blue and/or white in summer.
At the beginning of the Michaelmas term, children return to school in their transitional uniform. Full winter uniform is normally worn after the October Half Term, but it can be worn before Half Term if the weather turns cold. Summer uniform is worn after the Easter holidays. Ties for the Prep School are now considered optional for day-to-day wear with the long-sleeved shirt. However, they are required for formal occasions. Therefore, all pupils who wear the long shirt and trousers should have a tie available at home for such events.
Formal events are announced in advance e.g. Carol Services.
If you visit the school during the day at any time other than drop off or pick up (e.g. for a meeting), please report to the office, sign in and wear a visitor’s lanyard. Remember to sign out on leaving.
We would ask that parents do not hold the door open for other parents or visitors to ensure that everyone entering or leaving the school building adheres to the correct procedure.
It is important that children drink enough water during the school day. Children should bring plain water in a clearly named, refillable water bottle which must be taken home each day to be cleaned and replenished.
