The MOUNT at Powell Spring 2021 Instructor: Jen Shin THE MOUNT takes scale and landscape into considera on as it unifies the many popula ons across the powelton area. As permenant and transient popula ons clash over land, this community center looks to find common ground among locals and students alike. THE MOUNT hosts a cafe, a music venue, ar st studios, and a gallery to become a crea ve hotspot, all under a rolling green hill where all are invited to meander, explore, and gather.

The Call to Action According the Philadelphia 2035, thee western region of Philadelphia is most concerned with revitalizing the commercial corridor and breathing life back into it. This change cannot be achieved simply through the addi on of fast food chains and corperate intrusion.

There must be a community incen ve to support the surrounding area.

By understanding the social, economic, and environmental needs of the many communi es occupying Powelton Village, this project has the poten al to foster a bright future for Lancaster, the surrounding community, and the rest of University City.

Studio spaces are buried beneath the hill, but offer snapshots of the ac vity below to passersby.

The restuarant and studio spaces juxtapose one another, one open, tall and loud, the other a low expanse, nestled into the landscape. Their connector, the gallery, juts out over the street, the bridge between the two programs.

WORK/LIVE Fall 2021 Instructor: Jacklynn Niemiec The Work/Live Units were designed with the purpose of gran ng the resident with the power of spa al agency. The facade is able to undergo changes based on the needs of the resident. Wooden panels are in place of aperatures and can be slid to the side for maxium light and air or replaced depending on the use of the space within. A telescoping door is put in place of the first floor facade to enagage the street.

CO- LIVING Fall 2021 Instructor: Jacklynn Niemiec The Co/Living Units were designed to engage community inside and out of the envelope. The ground floor is designed to be the kitchen to the residents occupying the apartments above in the second and third floors. Ac ng as a bridge that unites the residents, the staircase climbs up the building beneath a skylight that brings light down throughout the building.

Finding Unity...

Shared space invites inhabirtants to collaborate, unite, and relax underneath an adjustable wooden canopy.

Co-Living stair acts as a gateway between kitchen and living spaces as it brings light down to the first floor.

IN THE MANNER OF...

Winter 2020 Instructor: Hanneke Van In The Manner of... is an explora on in dialogue.

As we con nue to renovate our landscape with new buildings, designers must face an over arching challenge, how to handle context. In this facade study, the muscular architecture of the City Bank on Lancaster Avenue in Philadelphiawas extended next door and wraps around the delicate mullion framing.

THE ARENA Spring 2020 Instructor: Alesa Rubenthal The Arena Boathouse was designed tobe an addi on to Philadelphia’s iconic boathouse row. The Arena was designed with the purpose of mo va ng athletes of any level. The Arena accomidates the community with a training facility that over looks the river. The boat storage, which is typically tucked away within the structure, brings the boats out on display in a huge glazed structure with a green roof that seats viewers of thje rega as on the schyulkill river.

The Belmont Library Winter 2021 Instructor: Jeremy Voorhees The Belmont Library serves the community in many different ways. The Library is a land mark for anyone across the city of Philadelphia to enter into a light filled space designed to mo vate and excite. The residen al bars that float above the street act like arms that conceal the quiet courtyard within. This project is devised as a method of bridging the gap between what is considered public and what is considered private.

This exercise developed the overall layout of the Belmont library. This lead a light and airy entrance to the library on the corner of 40th and Wallace Street in West Philadelphia.

This view illustrates the essence of the interior courtyard and how it operates with the public program on the 1st floor.
