The Ridge Apartments, Kiambu. • Scheme Design - We worked in teams handling different parts of the project but in close collaboration to ensure consistency of information output.

• Handled the implementation of BIM processes to ensure teams work efficiently to avoid repetitive tasks.

• Detailed Design - This involved production of detailed drawings for issue to the contractor during construction and suppliers for bidding purposes. Drawings include: Staircase and Balustrade Details, Kitchen Details, Bathroom Details, Wadrobe Details, Wall Sections, Reflected Ceiling Plans, Floor Pattern Finishes etc.

• Concept Design - Preparation of Site Analysis, Case Study analysis and Massing studies to explore various strategies of land use and determine the best fit for apartments while considering factors such as site regulatory constraints, orientation, accessibility and views.

• Detail Design Development - Production and issuing of a detailed drawing set to the contractor for construction.

• Project Supervision - Conducting site inspection meetings with the technical team to assess the progress of the perimeter wall construction and show-house setting out.

• Presiding over site meetings between the contractor and consultants and mediating issues between the team.

• Scheduling and Procurement - Preparation of a look and feel document in line with the underlying theme to determine the overall strategy for exterior and interior finishes.

• Preparation and issue of excel procurement packages to local and Chinese suppliers for bidding. The packages detail the specification and quantities of each finish item required. Most of these works were outsourced to competent Chinese suppliers to ensure quality whilst reducing cost. Items in the procurement package: Aluminium doors, windows & curtain walls, Floor finishes (porcelain tiles and wooden floorboards), glass balustrades, Kitchen cabinets and counter tops, lighting and electrical fittings, sanitary fittings and all joinery work.

• Inspecting containers on arrival to site to ensure receipt of all items and approve quality.

DEMONSTRATION FARMS Particular staple foods of the Taita people will be grown in these farms (sorghum, millet). They will supply the traditional restaurant, water from stored rainwater and recycled greywater will be used in dry periods.

AMPHITHEATRE This is the main performance arena overlooking the scenic landscapes of hills in Voi town.

BIODIGESTERS AND UNDERGROUND GREYWATER TREATMENT FACILITY Greywater and blackwaterwill be treated here. Recycled water will be used in the gardens and farms.

Being a project that is culturally grounded, heavy inferences have been borrowed from the Taita culture which is the most dominant in the town. The concept of the layout plan is derived from the Taita Traditional Homestead whereby they had 3 huts arranged around a central courtyard as shown. This initial idea is further abstracted in an intricate process to come up with a functioning master plan.

Care is taken to also respond to the south-eastern views which spot hilly landscape sceneries that could be defined as one of the identity markers of Voi town.

This project was undertaken in the graduating year of architecture school as a social impact project. It is the culmination of a 6 months long study on the challenges facing design of livable spaces that guarantee user thermal comfort in hot and dry areas in a Thesis titled: Sustainable Built Forms in Hot and Dry areas; A Case of Voi Town.

Voi town was chosen due to its rich historical and cultural background, its strategic positioning as a tourism hub, and its vibrant economy in the coast which places it as an emerging city in the near future. These factors provide rich context in the search of a regional identity, defined by History, Culture and Climate.

INDOOR PERFORMANCE This space will host theatrical and musical performances. It can be used during the night and during extreme weather conditions.

SHRINE. SHRINE This is a private space at the southern edge resembling a traditional Taita shrine, with the wild banana tree and the fig tree. It is meant for demonstration purposes only.

EXHIBITION PODS This are structures made of rammed earth , abstracted from the broken pot that is fixed atop the roof of traditional Taita hut. They are situated strategically at different activity nodes on site and artists will use them to showcase their wares

ROCK ROCKGARDEN GARDENAND ANDMONUMENT. MONUMENT This is one of the nodes along the central axis of the site. The monument is abstracted from the traditional Mwazindika Drums.

SHADED PROMENADE This walkway runs around the cultural exhibition court and is shaded using overhead sisal timber and wooden slats on the sides.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT FOR ARTISTS This section of the site will be set apart to put up residencies for artists who will be staying here on a temporary basis.

Site section across the cultural exhibition court Taita traditional culture majorly revolves around music and dance. They have various rituals such as pepo healing ritual to ward off evil spirits. The author thus heavily borrows from this aspect in designing the form and facade. Design is abstracted from the Traditional Mwazindika Drums, which are synonymous with this rituals. Its conical structure and imposing patterns are reflected in the double skin facade system that is implemented as a solar control mechanism.

The main objective for undertaking a social project in Voi town is to use it as a means to impact the local community on the importance of sustainable building practices in a region as hot as Voi. It is also a means to define the regionalism of the place through climate and culture.

Construction of the new standard gauge railway gives the impetus for redevelopment of this area, giving the CBD the opportunity to expand across the railway yard through an urban development strategy. The challenge therefore is to incorporate concepts such as revitalization, redevelopment, renewal, regeneration and pedestrian oriented developments into a new scheme that reflects the current needs of the contemporary society.

The Transit Interchange The site is located at the confluence of two major arteries/nodes ie the main road (factory street), the pedestrian boulevard and the public square. This is an integral point experiencing high vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The project thus envisions to accommodate all types of commercial activities due to its prime location.

Section through the commercial retail district The development is located in the commercial reatil district and thus adopts the strategy of a mixed use development, incorporating retail along the road front, hotel theme along the green central boulevard and a commercial office component which forms the main tower.

Interior View of the hotel lobby The design takes on a contemporary approach, implementing the use of modern materials such as glass reinforced concrete elements on the facade and alucobond panels. Passive design strategies also come into play with the use of wooden sunshading elements, deep roof overhangs, staggered balcony projections and recessed windows.

Ground Floor Plan The scheme is divided into three blocks each housing different activities and connected by a bridge. There is the hotel block to the south, a recreational block to the north and an office tower to the west.

Each cluster consists of an L-shaped block and two I-shaped blocks. Each block has a mix of accommodated units to encourage cohesion and inclusivity. The L-shaped block has a mix of 2 bedroom units, one bedroom units and bedsitter units while the I-shaped blocks have a mix of 3 bedroom units, 1 bedroom units and bedsitter units.

With each block going up 5 floors, each cluster accommodates 280 residents.

The housing scheme is arranged in clusters which in turn make up a sector. Each cluster consist of an L-shaped block and two straight blocks enclosing a central courtyard that contains the children’s playground and other recreational spaces. The courtyard also helps promote community and interaction.

Located in Mambrui, a small town on the outskirts of Malindi, this project combines swahili architecture and islamic influences with a contemporary twist in an effort to revitalize the coastline of this otherwise sleepy town while capturing the identity of its multicultural people.

The design consists of 4 blocks and a health club arranged in a U-shaped manner creating a central courtyard. The courtyard contains communal spaces such as a swimming pool and a playground and opens up to the beach and ocean, offering splendid vistas to the inhabitants.

I was exclusively responsible for the design, detailing and BIM Management of two apartment blocks out of the total 10 that are being developed. This involved coordinating and synchronizing with design teams handling other blocks into the scheme to maintain a seamless workflow handling of information.

Universal Design

This is a Mixed Use Residential Project undertaken by Aspera Design, situated along the Northern Bypass, off Kiambu Road. Its architecture embraces a fairly contemporary approach with a world class edge, and this reinforces Nairobi’s designation as a global city and destination for luxury living.

This involved the conceptualization and design of interiors in the apartment block units and common areas. The design proposed combines wood and earthy brown accents against a white backdrop with gold trims to give the space a rich authentic feel.

A colour palette was developed for the interiors to maintain harmony with the exterior elevations. Alternating brown and beige tiles were used on the floors, while the walls were plastered and painted white with alternating grey natural stone and wood accents. The gypsum ceiling was painted white.

Level One Level Two Level Three The building takes on a U shaped form, enclosing a central courtyard which is the primary organisational element and also acts as a central meeting place that promotes interactivity through recreational spillover spaces and thus enhances community.

The design borrows from one of the principle functions of traditional markets which was to bring people together. It adopts an U-shaped courtyard design thus creating a central piazza for interaction, community and engagement. It is purposed to be a lifestyle hub that reflects the changing needs of an increasingly modernised society in a growing town. This is brought out by its contemporary design and the spaces it accommodates such as a gym, an entertainment hub, convenient stores and a supermarket.

Level One Level Two Roof Plan The building is an elongated oblong shape due to the inherent shape of the site. Spaces are open plan and free flowing without any defined structural barriers such as walls. This assists in proper cross ventilation of the building’s interior.

This private residence in Mombasa borrows from the towns architectural character incorporating elements such as parapet walls, cornices and a white exterior to reflect the sun’s intense heat during the day.

Spaces inside are free-flowing, arranged in an open plan manner to allow for effective cross-ventilation. The oblong shape of the building is in response to the site’s constraints.

A second option was developed for the client on an alternative site as a result of the narrow constraints of the first site. This design adopts a more contemporary approach with wood accents on the elevation for aesthetics while maintaining the rooftop terrace, parapet walls and cornices, in a modern interpretation of swahili architecture.

A double volume living space has been incorporated to enhance cross ventilation.
