In Mystery & Suspense Novels, the most complex aspect is the characters. A character who is the good guy need not be a model citizen, and the bad guy has a back-end story that would justify his deeds, at least in the mind of the character.
It is the rivalry between these two opposing forces that give rise to a plot that will ensure that the story moves forward; hence it is essential for each character to have a clear motivation. As a novelist, you need to be able to satisfy the following questions
What is the purpose of what they are doing? What is the character's eventual goal? Who has the protagonist to save himself or somebody else? How will the characters react in the face of adversity?
