f you study art history, as I have, you’ll learn that evidence of plein air painting goes back a few hundred years. Over time, painters have been inspired to take brush and canvas outside. As a result, small plein air movements have arisen. The best known were Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the Barbizon School. But each of these involved just a handful of artists. Of course, America has its own rich history with the Hudson River School, which involved sketching, oil sketching, and in some rare cases, full paintings on location. Later, artists like Theodore Robinson, J. Alden Weir, and a small number of others who had lived and studied in Paris brought their impressionist styles back to America. As a result, plein air movements grew up in the East and in the West. But nothing in the history of art has ever seen a movement this large, a movement that has become a lifestyle. I like to say it’s the new golf. Whether amateurs, hobbyists, or professionals, thousands of artists are living the lifestyle of outdoor painting. Like golf, it is mentally challenging and stimulating, it’s social, and it’s relaxing and allows you to forget everything else for a while. It involves being outdoors in beautiful places, provides some exercise, and can even lead to world travel. But unlike golf, it means using your creative brain and is an outlet for developing your artistic ability. And for some it can provide an income, or at least the gratification of being occasionally involved in shows or sales. We are seeing thousands adopt this lifestyle, which means more painters’ groups, more events and shows, and more people being exposed to original art and collecting it. They are also joining the exotic trips PleinAir magazine has created (Cuba, Africa, New Zealand), and attending retreats that are all painting and not workshops, like my Adirondack and Fall Color Week events. Of course they want to be part of a community and want to learn and grow, which is why the Plein Air Convention & Expo is now attracting about a thousand people each year. Our PleinAir Podcast has also been bringing more people into painting. Like last time, we expect a hundred or so people to show up at our next convention who have never painted before and who’ll buy all their supplies at the event. And we’re seeing more young people coming into the plein air lifestyle. Our role is to not only create experiences that scratch their itch to participate, but to hold up the best examples of quality and encourage growth and high standards. This annual guide is evidence of the growth and success of this movement. We all play a role in keeping it moving forward, helping it grow, while keeping standards high so that plein air does not become known for low-quality artwork, but for high-quality paintings, often created after years or decades of experience and growth. We can keep this movement growing and alive for generations to come by helping others paint — reinforcing my goal of helping 1 million people learn to paint, because it changes lives. Most will never go pro, will never do shows or even show their work, yet with our help they will be introduced to a life as an artist, which is rich and rewarding. Thank you for the role you play.

WELCOME! To the 4th Annual Ultimate Artists’ & Collectors’ Guide to Plein Air Events & Organizations

A

s president of the Exhibitionist Council of the Laguna Art Museum in 1991-92, I became aware of a group of painters who gathered in the town of Avalon, on the island of Catalina off the Southern California coast. They called themselves the Plein Air Painters of America, a name borrowed (with her blessing) from the author Ruth Lilly Westphal, who had penned two books with similar titles. The group was founded by Catalina resident painter Denise Burns, with the purpose of “seeing” color, to “capture the light.” She and Jane Shuss invited fellow artists to paint Avalon and the interior of the island, sometimes chased by island buffalo (and fascinated tourists). They assembled the first adventurous painters to paint “en plein air” and show their work in 1986. Their exhibition included Denise, Jane, Lynn Gertenbach, Louise DeMore, Dan Peterson, Stanley Sampson, and Betty Billups. The next year Linda Tippetts, Joan M. LaRue, Jack Hines, Jessica Zemsky, Raleigh Kinney, Mary Deloyht-Arendt, and Bill Perkins joined the group. By year three, Kevin Macpherson and Jean Perry were among the growing roster of artists. Denise’s vision of educating and establishing plein air painting as a valid genre was being wholeheartedly embraced. By the 1990s, the group had become well known among painters who enjoyed painting outdoors, and more amazing artists joined: Kenn Backhaus, John Budicin, Gay Faulkenberry, Jean LeGassick, Joseph Mendez, Ned Mueller, Ralph Oberg, Ron Rencher, Matt Smith, Brian Stewart, George Strickland, Frank LaLumia, and Peter Adams. Ten years after PAPA’s founding, a Laguna Beach and Catalina art patron by the name of Roy Rose formed the Society for the Advancement of Plein Air Painters, or SAPAP. Rose not only brought his collector friends to purchase art from PAPA artists, he sponsored elegant openings of many PAPA exhibitions to follow. The Casino Ballroom at the luxurious Avalon Theatre included a red carpet entrance and the first framed wet paint sale. This hugely successful sale saw the vision Denise had gambled on years before come to full fruition. The 25 artists, in more than 100 paintings, captured on canvas the island’s beauty, its people, boats, and architecture. I was lucky enough to attend the 13th Annual PAPA show and sale in November of 1998. There were artists I’d heard of, and some I knew, but what

v2-ULTIMATE DIRECTORY 2018 (every page 1 file).indd 3

was really evident was the camaraderie of those who loved to paint on location. They swapped paintings for golf carts and lodging and had so many stories to tell … helping each other late into the night, and critiquing one another’s paintings from the day as artists gathered at the Atwater Hotel in the evenings. The “losers” were scraped off to present a fresh canvas for the next day’s challenge. When you meet a painter out on the road or in a field or standing on a sandy beach, make sure you engage them in conversation. Ask them for a painting story. One artist might tell you about the time she was painting on a secluded beach when a man pulled his Zodiac up on the beach, stripped down to his swim trunks, and watched her paint. After a few hours, he swam back to his sailboat and brought her back a check in a plastic bag to purchase the finished piece. If only there were room here to tell all their stories — trips to Venice, gypsy camps in Portugal, so many of the national parks. It’s an extended family who to this day enjoy the life of “schlepping canvases, paints, frames” so we have the opportunity to see what they see. This legacy is alive today. Alive in the many plein air painting groups around the world, small and large groups who meet in Ireland, Arizona, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Nova Scotia, Vancouver, and every point in between. All because they love to share the camaraderie of painting in every medium, in early morning light, in the dark by flashlight, and even in the rain. Not only is PAPA going strong at 31 years old, with workshops, paintouts, and exhibitions, so are the many listed in this 2018 Ultimate Artists’ & Collectors’ Guide to Plein Air Events & Organizations. Whether you are a painter just starting out or a patron who loves to watch a painting being created before your eyes, we hope you enjoy this year’s guide. Keep on painting, and keep on collecting great plein air paintings!

MAKING THE MOST OF PLEIN AIR EVENTS

A Guide for Artists, Collectors & Organizers By M. Stephen Doherty

An artist participates in the annual invitational event organized by the Laguna (CA) Plein Air Painters Association.

A

mong the driving forces behind the growth of interest in plein air painting are the numerous outdoor painting festivals launched within the past 15 years. As artists or collectors are trying to determine whether to get involved with one of these plein air events, they first need to understand how festivals are organized, promoted, and supported. Typically, events involve artists painting on weekdays in designated areas and then submitting their completed works for an exhibition and sale over the weekend. The organizers invite or jury top artists; offer opportunities to learn about materials, equipment, and techniques; encourage collectors to buy plein air paintings; and cele4

brate the idea of painting specific locations. They are “win-win” opportunities for the organizers, patrons, cities, and artists. The easiest events to participate in are those that don’t require advance registration and are open to anyone who shows up and pays a nominal fee. These community-oriented events are often fundraisers, and the artists donate all or a large percentage of the money they receive from selling their paintings. These events offer artists an opportunity to test their level of interest in timed plein air events. Even at invitational or juried events, there is often an opportunity for amateur or semi-professional artists to paint and compete in the two-hour quick draw events.

Member & Invitational Events These events can be as casual as a “paint-out” of artists who belong to a plein air group and just need someone to pick a location and date, or they can be as high-powered as the Laguna Plein Air Painters’ Invitational event in California. The artists that participate in this event are selected by committee and sent invitations to participate. Another type of invitational is organized by an art school, commercial gallery, or civic group that wants to hand-pick the participating artists. Most of the participants are connected to the host organization, but others submit examples of their work and ask to be invited. One of the largest of these invitationals is the Door County Plein Air

A group of people watch Tom Nachreiner during the annual Door County Plein Air Festival in Wisconsin.

Festival in Wisconsin, which, according to the group’s bylaws, must invite a significant number of artists who did not participate in the previous year’s event.

Juried Shows This is the most common type of plein air festival. The organizers put out a call for applications, artists submit digital images through an online jury system, and an outside person or persons selects artists up to the number that can be accommodated. There is almost always a fee to apply, and it is usual for an artist to submit digital photographs of three paintings. Most artists submit their best plein air paintings, especially those that have won awards in previous events, but others make sure to enter paintings that will catch a juror’s eye and are easy to understand and appreciate in a split second. Plein air events of these types are almost always fundraisers for the host organization or some designated charity like a school, art center, or foundation. Commercial galleries will also host events as a way to make money, bring attention to their regular stable of artists, or bring out collectors who might become clients of the gallery.

Publicity Events: Quick Draws, Nocturnes, Landmarks One of the best ways to build an audience for a plein air event is to schedule timed activities and have them take place in a specified location. That makes it easier for people to find and observe a group of artists working on location, and these events are perfect material for a local newspaper to feature. Two-hour quick draw and nighttime (nocturne) painting events help to bring attention to artists and the event in which they are participating, and they offer another opportunity to sell paintings, since most of these timed competitions end with completed work being displayed and offered for sale. 6

In another variation of these competitions, plein air artists are expected to spend a day painting in a specific town, a historic district, or near a historic landmark. The motivation is essentially the same: the scheduled events encourage people to travel to that designated location, get to know the artists, and purchase paintings. When time is limited by the rules of a quick draw competition or by the disappearing light at dusk, artists tend to paint on smaller panels and quickly block in the important pattern of light and shadows. It helps to identify a good location in advance of the event, perhaps even checking out locations after sunset a day or two before so the artist will know where the interior and exterior lights might work well in a nocturne.

Sales & Awards Buying art is a very personal and individual decision that is hard to analyze. The final selection is influenced by individual taste, interest in the subject, ability to pay the asking price, and the level of energy during the opening of an exhibition. Likewise, the decision made by an awards judge (or jury committee) is just as personal and subject to the taste, standards, and — yes — personal relationships between the judge and the competing artists. Perhaps the most common issue about plein air awards is that sense that the judge has rewarded his or her close friends, former students, or gallery associates. No judge will ever deliberately play favorites or pay more attention to signatures than painted images, but human nature and personal taste will always influence their final decision. The staff of Plein Air Easton (MD) conducted research and found that many folks who buy competition paintings were as interested in learning how to paint on location as they were in building a collection of plein air paintings. In particular, men and women who knew exactly when they would retire used the event in Mary-

land to explore the idea of becoming visual artists after they concluded their professional careers. The festival provided the perfect opportunity to see paintings develop from start to finish, ask questions about the decisions made by the artists, and buy the paintings that could remind them of the lessons offered by the painter. One of the conclusions to be drawn from Plein Air Easton’s research is that education is one of the ways artists can attract interest in their paintings. There are other ways to identify and motivate people who have the means to buy paintings, and the next section offers some proven methods of reaching that level of success.

Intangible Benefits There are many positive aspects to being a participant, volunteer, or supporter of plein air events, both on a personal and a professional level. One has the chance to talk with other artists, learn about materials and techniques, support the non-profit partner of the festival, buy or sell paintings of hometown scenes, make progress in one’s skills and style of painting, and establish friendships with creative people. Volunteers and staff members spend months in advance of an event trying to increase award purses, smooth the daily procedures, prepare for the exhibition, promote participation and sales, and offer every comfort possible to the artists. Families open their homes and provide accommodations, meals, snacks, and warm hospitality to the participating artists. Those volunteers and staff members offer a valuable service to artists, collectors, and community members. M. STEPHEN DOHERTY is editor-in-chief of PleinAir magazine.

MBPAPA works to foster the appreciation of plein air painting and its history. Meeting twice a month for paint-outs around Monterey Bay, members bring a contemporary approach to the challenges of painting in the open air. Paint-outs are listed on our website and are open to all. MBPAPA helps to distinguish member artists by hosting several juried exhibitions each year. Our quarterly newsletter highlights major museum and gallery shows and celebrates our member career successes. MARYLAND Washington Society of Landscape Painters Contact: Brenda Kidera E-mail: webmaster@wslp.org Phone: 410.489.0431 Website: www.wslp.org The Washington Society of Landscape Painters was founded in 1913 by a fortuitous chance encounter between two plein air painters in Washington, D.C.’s Rock Creek Park and is the nation’s oldest continuously active landscape painting organization. Initially known as the Ramblers, their handwritten and delightfully illustrated Log Book began a century-long detailed record of the club’s activities and adventures. While these archives now reside in the Smithsonian Institution, WSLP members today are still actively painting the landscape together around D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, holding exhibits, and, most importantly, enjoying the camaraderie of their shared passion.
