The Moment of Collapse: Akira Kurosawa Film Festival

[Objective]

Create a film festival for a chosen movie director. Extract a theme that ties together all of the director’s selected films and creates a cohesive visual system through various materials.

[Concept]

Showcase Japanese film director, Akira Kurosawa’s most idiosyncratic movies, including Ikiru (1952), Seven Samurai (1954), Throne of Blood (1957), The Bad Sleep Well (1960), and Yojimbo (1961). The visual execution is based on the director’s quirky and personal take on life and his constant theme: evil overwhelms the good in human nature, leading to defeat and hopelessness.

Give a dying or defunct brand a new life. Reposition the brand while keepingits original core.

[Concept]

I chose to rebrand SEGA, a Japanese multinational video game developer and publisher. Now, SEGA’s mission is to help people develop strategies to meet ever-increasing challenges. SEGA has many possibilities to push people through to the next level in many physical and mental abilities such as sports, fitness, and futuristic experience lab.

[Objective]

Create two experimental typography posters which explore existing modern typographical ideas and techniques in experimental ways. Investigate the communication of content and the emotional qualities of posters.

[Concept]

The first poster is monochrome. I defined a word, ‘bedlam’, and used typographical contents to present my personal feeling of this word. The second poster is a music poster. I chose heavy metal music and used a projector and camera to create unusual typographic approaches to present my interpretation of the song.

Interpret my personal experience through experimental approaches in typography. The book tells the story of the sounds of downtown San Francisco.

[Concept]

Living in downtown San Francisco, I am surrounded by the sounds of the city. Different times have sound components which formulate the moments of the city. I used experimental typographic elements and mono-color images to present the concept of the relationship between sound and city life.

Choose an issue or audience research in the real world. Explore user experience and create an app through graphic design and audience research.

[Concept]

Research showed that skateboarders are familiar with physical barriers and skating spots in their city. City skaters need more inspiration to enhance their personal skills and experiences. I developed an app as a platform for urban skaters to get skating inspiration, share their experiences, and recommend appropriate locations for skating skill levels.

Many people are scared they won’t be able to understand art or know “what it means.” This project is an art education solution which conducts art classes for youths. The design deliverables have interactive activities and art events to help youths learning and creating fine arts in many different perspectives and creativities.

[Objective]

Investigate how research and audience understanding create successful interactive projects that can enhance a user’s experience with a brand. Use research and design strategies to align a brand with a series of design communication solutions.

[Concept]

Common and seemingly overwhelming questions usually come up when it comes to craft beers: “What is craft beer?” “How do I choose a craft beer?” I designed an app which helps people choose craft beers in San Francisco. In design choices, I used vector patterns and golden colors to present the beer mood. Also, I chose a gothic but modern typeface to present the new trend of the local craft beer.
