Esta frase, pronunciada con la cantarina voz del abogado y, excepcionalmente en ese episodio, agente inmobiliario Lionel Hutz –referencia de un millennial a un capítulo de Los Simpson, para sorpresa de nadie– plantea dos realidades enfrentadas: la verdad –oscura, pesada, negativa– y la verdad –sonriente, afirmativa, casi ilusoria–.
El acto de crear –idear o proyectar– parece un truco misticista, asociado a la visita etérea de las musas –quienesquiera que sean esas esquivas damas–. Sin embargo, la realidad es mucho más terrenal y, paradójicamente, incomprensible, desligada del cómodo mito de la inspiración divina.
De hecho, considero que el cerebro no logra descifrar del todo el mecanismo de la creatividad: un proceso que suele nacer desde el acto de redibujar lo conocido, lo existente y lo aprendido, copiando a veces, como un impostor, engañando a la mente para que aterrice sobre algo estable y, desde ahí, evolucionar. Crear parece entonces un acto de imitación que se disfraza de originalidad.
This phrase, spoken with the melodious voice of the lawyer and, exceptionally in that episode, real estate agent Lionel Hutz –a millennial reference to an episode of The Simpsons, to no one’s surprise–presents two opposing realities: the truth –dark, heavy, negative– and the truth –smiling, affirmative, almost illusory–.
The act of creating –of conceiving or designing–seems like a mystic trick, associated with the ethereal visit of the muses –whoever those elusive ladies might be–. However, the reality is far more earthly and, paradoxically, incomprehensible, detached from the comfortable myth of divine inspiration.
In fact, I believe the brain doesn’t fully decipher the mechanism of creativity: a process that often originates from the act of redrawing what is known, what exists, and what has been learned, sometimes copying, like an impostor, tricking the mind into landing on something stable, and from there, evolving. Creating, then, seems like an act of imitation dressed up as originality.
El inquietante dibujo de Jørn Utzon, donde el arquitecto se alimenta de su propio cerebro para dibujar, logra plantear esa idea, sin duda, pero en la realidad, ese ser monstruoso y autofagocitante contaría con tres brazos: uno para comer, otro para dibujar y, un tercero, para sostener a un niño a punto de destruirlo todo. Porque crear siempre ha sido una cuestión de equilibrios precarios, donde el aprendizaje, la producción y el caos de la realidad conviven en un tenso pero necesario baile.
Este conjunto de verdades, de realidades, que se materializan de manera simbiótica al proyectar, no pueden ignorarse ni relegarse, por más oscura que sea su entonación. Al igual que en una delicada pieza de origami, donde la forma de la grulla ilusiona pero no oculta la fragilidad del papel, estas verdades deben asumirse, aceptarse y, tal vez, exhibirse. Es en esta tensión entre lo visible y lo velado donde reside la autenticidad del proceso creativo.
Que la arquitectura sea capaz de mostrar sus hilos, sus dobleces y sus sombras; que no tema revelar el equilibrio precario entre la mística y la trampa. Solo así podremos aproximarnos a una comprensión plena de lo que significa proyectar y construir.
Jørn Utzon’s unsettling drawing, where the architect feeds from his own brain to draw, undoubtedly conveys that idea, but in reality, that monstrous, self-consuming being would have three arms: one to eat, another to draw, and a third to hold a child on the verge of destroying everything. For creating has always been about precarious balances, where learning, production, and the chaos of reality coexist in a tense but necessary dance.
This set of truths, of realities, that materialise symbiotically when designing, cannot be ignored or relegated, no matter how dark their tone. Just like in a delicate piece of origami, where the crane’s shape is enchanting but doesn’t hide the fragility of the paper, these truths must be embraced, accepted, and perhaps even displayed. It is in this tension between the visible and the veiled that the authenticity of the creative process resides.
Let architecture be able to show its threads, its folds, and its shadows; let it not be afraid to reveal the precarious balance between mysticism and trickery. Only then can we come close to a full understanding of what it means to design and build.
