Ever so often, a masterpiece arrives on the art scene with such compelling authority that it recalibrates our understanding and appreciation of an entire culture’s artistic output.

But what does it mean ?

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not one of those sophisticated art connoisseurs who can stand in front of a painting and decipher the myriad of emotions and messages the artist intended to communicate. But don’t get me wrong—that doesn’t diminish my appreciation for it. There’s something truly magical about a great piece of art, even if you’re not an expert. It’s just so beautiful to see. And lately, have been seeing a lot of that. It’s hard not to notice the burgeoning art scene in Nigeria, particularly here in Lagos. It’s a renaissance of sorts no longer exclusive to the elite class. What’s not to love about that?

However, while the Nigerian art industry is indeed flourishing, believe there’s room for growth in how we educate and promote the value of art. Engage the average Nigerian in a conversation about our cultural exports, and you’ll likely hear names like Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, or perhaps Davido. No doubt, music and movies have captured the hearts of many, but what about visual artists like Peju Alatise, Nnenna Okore, and Ndidi Emefiele? They are equally doing as great, crafting narratives just as compelling, yet they seldom receive the same spotlight. We should work on that. Maybe a bit more investment in art education and increased media attention for the art industry. Perhaps. And more importantly, for the younger ones, we need to preserve our rich cultural heritage by continuously promoting art. Baby steps, but win-win.

On to the next: have you ever wondered why you pick the clothes you wear? Yes, there’s a whole psychology behind our fashion choices! If this piques your interest, you should check out the article “The Psychology Behind Fashion Choices.” It’s quite the read!

While on the topic of introspection, if you’re having second thoughts about your relationship, maybe give the article “Relationship Red Flags” a look. Recognising what’s normal and not could be the first step towards mending or making important decisions about your relationships.

How’s April treating you? Hope your second-quarter goals are shaping up nicely. If not, remember, it’s been a whirlwind of a year—no need to put yourself under undue pressure. The fact that you are pushing through regardless also means you are winning. Just focus on being intentional, and things are bound to align. Wishing you a lovely week.

May your days be vibrant and full of potential!

A Perfect Symphony of Flavors: Glenfiddich’s Unforgettable Sensory Journey

In the era of fine dining, Glenfiddich takes guests on a gastronomic voyage where flavor meets finesse. The premium Single-Malt Whisky brand elevated the Grand Yozakura experience for guests by combining Japaneseinspired food with specially created cocktails in partnership with Chef Alex Stumpf and Professional Mixologist Robin Abrahamsson at RSVP in Lagos, Nigeria.

The evening unfolded into a rich tapestry of multi-sensory delights, echoing with laughter, animated conversations, and the delightful clinking of whisky glasses. Enyinna Nwigwe, Glenfiddich Nigeria’s Brand Ambassador, guided the tasting session with whisky aficionados, discerning clientele, and friends of the brand.

With a velvety texture that dances on the palate, the whisky reveals an array of flavors—subtle ripe fruits, delicate florals, spices, and oak, all expertly captured in signature drinks like Champagne Cascade, Whiskey Wonderland, and Sweet Symphony. Complementing these libations were a delectable array of dishes, from tantalizing starters to decadent desserts. The culinary artistry showcased by the esteemed Chef and Mixologist seamlessly blended classic Japanese nuances with modern twists, captivating palates with an array of mouthwatering creations.

“This experience was born from our desire to celebrate Glenfiddich’s remarkable Scottish whisky legacy, spanning 137 years. The Grand Yozakura whisky embodies the craftsmanship and dedication that have defined Glenfiddich as one of the world’s premier distilleries. Every sip unveils unique flavors and tasting notes, designed to enthrall your senses,” shared Enyinna Nwigwe, Glenfiddich Nigeria’s Brand Ambassador.

Since its introduction, Glenfiddich has become more than just a premium whisky; it is a symbol of mastery, collaboration, and the pursuit of excellence. The brand inspires whisky connoisseurs and enthusiasts to go out on a voyage of taste and exploration with every sip, where each experience is memorable and every moment is cherished.

In a country like ours, where the morning hustle often resembles a sprint rather than a serene awakening, pausing to whisper sweet nothings to ourselves might seem a tad outlandish. However, what if I told you that these very affirmations could be the espresso shot your morning routine desperately needs? Yes, integrating positive declarations into your AM ritual can do wonders, and I’m here to tell you why you should start serenading yourself with positivity as soon as you throw off the covers! 5

1.Boosts Confidence and SelfEsteem

Imagine starting your day by affirming, “I am a powerhouse; I am unstoppable.” Sounds powerful, right? That’s because positive declarations are like your own personal hype crew, ready to pump up your self-belief before you even step out of bed. They fortify your self-esteem and bolster your capabilities, essentially programming your brain to believe in your awesomeness. This practice doesn’t just sprinkle a little extra confidence on your cereal; it embeds a profound belief in your abilities that helps you face the day’s dragons with a superhero’s courage.

2.Sets a Positive Tone for the Day

Who needs coffee when you’ve got affirmations to kickstart your day on a high note? Sprinkling your morning with positive declarations sets a vibrant tone for the entire day. It’s like deciding to wear rose-tinted glasses and seeing challenges as opportunities and interactions as blessings. This shift in perspective can make your day more bearable, delightful, and productive!

3.Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Reciting affirmations such as “I am peace, I am love, I choose joy” can help dissolve stress and anxiety. This mental mantra acts like a psychological buffer against the daily grind’s bumps and grinds. By focusing on these positive reinforcements, you can cultivate a zen garden in your mind, making you more resilient and less likely to crumble under pressure.

4.Strengthens Resilience and Mental Toughness

If life is a marathon, positive declarations are the endurance training you didn’t know you needed. They build up your mental muscle, preparing you to jog through life’s ups and downs with less huffing and puffing. This practice isn’t just about feeling good; it’s about creating a robust mental framework that enables you to bounce back from setbacks with the grace of a gymnast.

5.Helps you overcome Imposter Syndrome:

For anyone who’s ever felt like a fraud (yes, that gnawing feeling of imposter syndrome), morning affirmations can be your knight in shining armour. By regularly reminding yourself, “I deserve my dreams,” “I am worthy of praise,” you slowly start to dismantle those internal critics. Over time, you’ll not only silence that nagging doubt but replace it with a confident voice that says, “I am exactly where need to be.”

Putting It Into Practice

So, how do you make these magical mantras a part of your life? Start simple. Set aside a few minutes each

morning—yes, before you rush off to your daily commitments. Stand in front of the mirror, look yourself in the eye, and declare your worth, strength, and capability. Feel silly? Perfect! It means you’re stepping out of your comfort zone, which is where growth happens. Keep at it for at least two weeks. Like any new habit, it feels awkward at first. But soon, you get used to it. Before you know it, these positive affirmations will not just be something you do; they’ll be a part of who you are—someone who faces the day with optimism, resilience, and a zest for life.

Ten Things This Week

This week, we met with Alessandro Martorana, a well-known Italian fashion designer who offers a luxury total look that can be customised in every aspect but does not like to call himself a tailor. He is about to open his atelier in Lagos. In this interview, we talk about his origins and success in the fashion world, from Milan to Nigeria, and his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo and the Saudi Royal Family.

Alessandro Martorana

I AM NOT A TAILOR

Why do you think your customers and those approaching the Martorana brand do so? What drives them?

Beyond the product, certainly for our professionalism and personalised experience. We organise meetings in our ateliers by appointment, share projects and ideas, and have a glass of champagne while choosing models, fabrics and colours.

Who do you count among your clients?

How was the Alessandro Martorana brand born?

The brand was born from a passion for luxury and lifestyle, from the desire to emerge and to create a unique brand that could stand out within the fashion world. At the beginning of my career, only produced shirts that were modern in idea but classic in quality. Later, expanded my sample collection, thanks to my friendship with Lapo Elkann, grandson of the famous Italian entrepreneur Gianni Agnelli, who asked me to adapt some Italian and English clothes he had inherited from his grandfather. That was the starting point for expanding my collection.

What are your sources of inspiration?

My father, without a doubt, instilled in me a culture of work and sacrifice. He was a barber of humble origins; we were very close. I see him in me every single day. After all, going to the barber is like going to the tailor: to improve your appearance, to feel good.

Where would you start from if you were to describe to the uninitiated the fundamental characteristics of the Alessandro Martorana collections? We offer a service made with the Italian quality of the old tailors’ school but leaving room for the imagination of those who commission the clothes. We do not have pre-set patterns; with us, every single garment is customisable in fabrics, colours, linings and details.

How important is the legacy of Italian tradition for Alessandro Martorana in his daily work?

Certainly, the Italian fashion industry is one of the world’s leading brands. The brands are known more for ready-to-wear than made-to-measure, with industrial products, albeit of the highest quality, accessible to many in the same model. The tailoring I draw inspiration from is different and unique, albeit always made in Italy: like a writer writing a book for a single reader, like a letter.

You have conquered a position of absolute international prestige relatively quickly; which markets have given you the greatest satisfaction?

The hard core of our clientele is certainly in Italy, but we have customers worldwide, from England to Saudi Arabia and from the United States to Serbia. Our customers don’t necessarily come to our ateliers; my collaborators and I reach them anywhere in the world. We like to say that we are everywhere.

From businessmen to footballers, celebrities to politicians from all over the world, and even some Nigerians. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lebron James, Andy Garcia, Adriana Lima, to name a few.

When did you start thinking about the Nigerian market?

Because of my friendship with Mr. Gabriele Volpi, a well-known Nigerian entrepreneur who has had great success in Nigeria and who has always extolled to me the beauty and potential of your country. Having approached the fashion world because of his group’s investment in the Cruciani fashion brand, he offered me the prospect of opening an Alessandro Martorana atelier in Lagos on his return from a recent trip to Nigeria, and I immediately welcomed the idea.

Can Nigeria be considered Alessandro Martorana’s gateway to the entire African continent and its most interesting countries?

Why not? Africa is a marvellous continent with great potential, so we are willing to consider further openings in our expansion project. Where will Alessandro Martorana’s atelier be in Lagos?

In Eko Atlantic City, in one of the penthouses of the exclusive Heliconia Park Luxury Apartments & Suites, with luxurious furnishings that reflect the style of our brand. Eko Atlantic City is a fast-developing location that, in addition to us, will host other important brands in the future, not only related to the fashion world.

What do you want to bring and offer differently to Nigerian customers and the country? Certainly, a product that is not accessible locally, so Nigerians usually have to travel between Milan, London or Dubai to get it. In the country, we will showcase our garments, finalise orders and deliver the final products directly to our customers’ homes in Nigeria or to our Lagos atelier.

Does Alessandro Martorana just mean suits?

No, absolutely not. Alessandro Martorana is a total look, from suits to shirts, jumpers, jackets, shoes and crocodile luggage. Furthermore, we would like to bring to Lagos other realities with

which we have already collaborated, from interior design to the world of luxury watches.

Are you excited about this new adventure?

It will be a great challenge; I can’t wait to start!

we would like to bring to Lagos other realities with which we have already collaborated, from interior design to the world of luxury watches.

ART’S NEW MASTERS!

Ever so often, a masterpiece arrives on the art scene with such compelling authority that it recalibrates our understanding and appreciation of an entire culture’s artistic output.

Such has been the case with Nigerian contemporary art, which has for a while now catapulted onto the global stage with phenomenal auction results and international acclaim. Central to this narrative are two iconic paintings by the late Nigerian artist Ben Enwonwu—Tutu and Christine. These portraits, fetching $1.5 million and $1.4 million respectively at prestigious London auction houses Bonhams and Sotheby’s, symbolised the dramatic rise of Nigerian art in the global market.

A decade ago, major African artists were conspicuously absent from international auctions.

Today, Africa—and Nigeria in particular—commands a very visible spot on the global art stage. This transition is not just about the monetisation of Nigerian art but the reflection of a deeper cultural shift towards appreciating and understanding the rich, diverse narratives that our artists bring to the fore.

Historically, Nigeria has been a crucible of culture, with artistic expressions rooted deeply in the tribal motifs, rituals, and customs from the ancient Kingdom of Benin to the Yoruba arts. However, the past few decades have seen a seismic shift. A new generation of Nigerian artists, imbued with the influences of modernism and global trends, coupled with the democratisation of information via the internet, has started to redefine what Nigerian art stands for. The changing landscape is also mirrored in the educational and professional choices of young Nigerians, who are increasingly embracing creative careers over traditional whitecollar paths.

From the politically charged works of Victor Ehikhamenor to the bold abstractions of Peju Alatise, Nigerian artists are using their canvases to tell new stories of our tradition with a vibrant modernity.

We can’t also ignore pivotal moments like Sokari Douglas Camp’s steel sculptures finding their home in the British Museum or Yinka Shonibare’s “Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle” making a statement in London.

Or the works of the likes of El Anatsui, a Ghanaian-born titan of contemporary art who has spent over four decades in Nigeria. Anatsui’s awe-inspiring work from discarded bottle caps and metal scraps, challenge traditional notions of sculpture and installation art. Exhibited across leading

galleries worldwide, his works are not only visually arresting but also carry a potent commentary on global consumerism.

There are also artists like Njideka Akunyili Crosby who has a 2017 botanical painting, titled “Bush Babies”, which recently sold for $3.4 million USD. Her work intertwines Nigerian motifs with Western aesthetics and creates a dialogue that transcends borders. Her art, like many others, does not shout but rather converses with the observer, inviting them to look closer and understand deeper.

Technological advancements have also further amplified the reach and impact of Nigerian artists, offering unprecedented access to learning resources, international networks, and collaborative opportunities. Noteworthy platforms fostering this growth include the Lagos Biennial and Art X Lagos, which not only showcase the diversity of African creativity but also attract a global audience, enhancing Nigeria’s cultural footprint. Most importantly, the Nigerian government has also begun to recognise the importance of nurturing this creative ecosystem.

Investment in Nigerian contemporary art is not just a financial venture; it’s a cultural and emotional investment. Collectors say, “When you buy Nigerian art, you’re not just hanging a piece on your wall; you’re adopting a piece of the nation’s soul.”

Amidst this narrative of ascent, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the path has not always been a clear, upward trajectory. Challenges like funding, recognition, and infrastructure have long plagued the Nigerian art scene. Yet, these hurdles have only added depth to the art that overcomes them, much like the intricate scars that adorn the bronze sculptures of Benin, adding beauty and history to each piece. The local art market is still burgeoning, with few collectors and galleries dedicated to contemporary works.

This transition is not just about the monetisation of Nigerian art but the reflection of a deeper cultural shift towards appreciating and understanding the rich, diverse narratives that our artists bring to the fore.

Addressing these challenges will require concerted efforts in art education, public engagement, and investment in cultural institutions.

The future of Nigerian contemporary art is as bright as the colours that dance on the canvases of artists like Jacqueline Suowari, says a Lagos-based curator. “We are only scratching the surface of what Nigerian art-

“Our art is a journey, and the whole world is coming along for the ride.”

In this unfolding narrative, every curator, artist, and enthusiast plays a pivotal role. And for those still contemplating the depth and vibrancy of Nigerian contemporary art, the message is clear: Dive in now, because as this cultural renaissance unfolds, you’ll want to say you had a front-row seat. To the movers and shakers of the Nigerian art scene, we salute you. To the art lovers and collectors, grab these masterpieces while you can. The rise of Nigerian art is not just a moment—it’s a movement.

The next time you find yourself before a Nigerian piece, pause and listen. You’re not just viewing an artwork; you’re partaking in a conversation centuries in the making. And perhaps, just maybe, you’ll find that the piece is whispering back to you, offering insights into a world both ancient and refreshingly new.

POWERSUIT HOWTAILORINGCANTRANSFORMYOURLOOK

Dubbed the ‘power suit,’ this style staple isn’t just about donning a piece of clothing. It’s a transformative piece, sculpting not only our outer appearance but fortifying our inner confidence. This isn’t hyperbole—it’s a reality for many who’ve felt the immediate impact of a suit that fits like a second skin. The journey of the power suit is as rich in history as it is in fabric. Emerging prominently in the 1980s, it was synonymous with a burgeoning era of corporate culture and economic boom. Men and women alike adopted this bold silhouette, which promised a visual assertion of competence and ambition. Today, the power suit has evolved but its essence remains the same: it is the uniform of the empowered, the gogetters, the bold. But what exactly about a tailored suit boosts confidence? According to fashion psychologists, it’s all in the ‘enclothed cognition’—a theory suggesting that a person’s clothing can trigger mental changes that positively influence their performance and attitude. When you wear a suit tailored to your measurements, you’re not adjusting to fit into it; the suit adjusts to accentuate the best of you, making you feel undeniably confident.

Tailoring does more than just alter a garment to fit snugly—it ensures each seam, cut, and contour is in harmony with your body. The difference between off-the-rack and bespoke is dramatically visible. Where off-the-rack might hang awkwardly or pinch uncomfortably, a tailored suit flows seamlessly with your movements. This isn’t just comfort—it’s a declaration of selfawareness and self-respect. The process of getting tailored itself can be a revelation. Stepping into a tailor’s, with bolts of fine fabric lined up like books in a library, is the first step into a world of personal choice. Here, details matter. The colour, the fabric weight, the lapel width, the number of buttons—each choice reflects personal style and preference, contributing further to one’s unique brand of confidence.

In interviews and important meetings, a power suit becomes your ally. It speaks of professionalism and preparation before you even utter a word.

The magic of the power suit isn’t reserved for the boardroom alone. Its influence seeps into various aspects of life. Social events, important personal appointments, or even a night out—whenever there’s a need to impress and express, the power suit stands ready. What’s more, the appeal of a tailored suit

transcends gender and age. It’s as impactful for a woman in her tech startup pitch as it is for a man at a charity gala. Anyone can look stunning in a suit if it’s sculpted to their frame and styled to their taste. It’s a democratic element in fashion, where everyone has the right to look and feel remarkable. At a time when first impressions are made in a heartbeat, investing in a tailored suit is investing in your self-assurance. It’s more than fashion—it’s strategic attire. Whether you’re trying to persuade a room of investors, charm a date, or command respect in your field, the power suit is your unspoken ally.

RELATIONSHIP RED FLAGS:

Every relationship has ups and downs. But when the scales tip more towards stress and discomfort than contentment and happiness, it might be time to stop and reevaluate. Recognising relationship red flags isn’t always straightforward; often, they’re overshadowed by memories of happier times or dimmed by hopes for the future. However, spotting these signs early can save you a lot of heartache.

Lack of Communication

Communication is the bedrock of any strong relationship. If conversations have dwindled to practicalities or you no longer feel comfortable discussing how you feel, this silence can create a chasm between you and your partner. When it’s easier to talk to friends or family about your relationship troubles than to the person you’re with, it’s time to question why.

Control Issues

Does your partner dictate how you dress, where you go, or even who you spend time with? Controlling behaviour is often justified under the guise of concern. However, love does not restrain freedom. This behaviour can escalate beyond choice restrictions, extending to overt actions like checking your phone, managing your finances without consent, or isolating you from loved ones. Recognising this pattern is crucial for your well-being.

Jealousy and Trust Issues

tionship without conflict, but how these disagreements are handled matters. If your partner dismisses your concerns or avoids addressing conflicts altogether, it’s a red flag. This avoidance can manifest as ghosting (ignoring you until they decide it’s time to communicate again) or switching blame to evade responsibility. Healthy relationships require confronting issues openly and respectfully.

Inconsistent Values and Life Goals

While opposites can attract, fundamental differences in life values and goals can be a source of ongoing conflict. Whether it pertains to finances, children, career aspirations, or lifestyle choices, if you’re consistently at odds with your partner’s vision of the future, it may lead to dissatisfaction for both of you.

Lack of Support

behaviours that intimidate, threaten, or hurt you. The presence of abuse is an undeniable signal that the relationship is not just unhealthy but dangerous.

Power Imbalance

A healthy relationship is built on equality and mutual respect. When one partner consistently holds power over the other through financial control, manipulation, or coercion, it creates an unhealthy dynamic. Power imbalances can lead to feelings of resentment, inadequacy, and dependency.

Emotional Distance

When you wear a suit tailored to your measurements, you’re not adjusting to fit into it; the suit adjusts to accentuate the best of you, making you feel undeniably confident.

While jealousy is a natural emotion, it becomes a red flag when it’s excessive or unfounded. If your partner expresses distrust regularly without reason, accuses you of things you haven’t done or needs constant reassurance, then trust—the very foundation of a relationship—is missing. Without trust, a partnership cannot thrive.

Avoidance of Conflict Resolution

It’s unrealistic to expect a rela-

Life isn’t always smooth sailing. During tough times, support from your partner is crucial. A red flag waves high if you find yourself consistently unsupported, whether emotionally or in your personal endeavours. A partner who is indifferent to your needs in difficult times may not provide the companionship you deserve.

Physical or Emotional Abuse

Any form of abuse—whether physical, emotional, or psychological—is the most glaring of all red flags. There is no excuse for

Emotional intimacy is essential for a fulfilling partnership. When one or both partners withdraw emotionally, it’s a sign that they’re no longer invested in the relationship. Whether due to unresolved conflicts, external stressors, or simply growing apart, emotional distance can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Constant Criticism

Constructive criticism can benefit personal growth, but when it becomes incessant and undermines your self-esteem, it’s toxic. Feeling constantly judged or belittled by your partner erodes trust and damages the emotional connection.

THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND FASHION CHOICES

Ever stood in front of your closet with loads of clothes staring back at you, yet you felt like there is absolutely nothing to wear? Or maybe you’ve found yourself buying another pair of shoes that look suspiciously similar to half a dozen others you already own. Welcome to the club—it’s not just a personal quirk but a slice of the fascinating psychology behind fashion choices that not only dictate what you wear but also tweak how you feel. Think of fashion as your silent spokesperson, a visual conversation you’re having with the world without even whispering a word. It’s how we shout out our mood, whisper our desires, and even fib a little about who we are. So, why do we pick the ensembles we do? Lets find out

1.Identity and Self-Expression

At the heart of fashion is storytelling. What you choose to wear each morning tells people a bit about your plotline. Our clothes mirror who we think we are or aspire to be. Rock a sharp, crisp suit; you’re broadcasting confidence and professionalism. Throw on an outrageously vibrant dress; you’re practically screaming creativity and daring.

2.Mood Enhancement

Ever slung on a blazer and felt instantly powerful? Or zipped up your favorite jeans and felt a surge of good vibes? Welcome to “enclothed cognition”—the scientific tale of how clothes can play with our mental state. It’s the secret sauce behind “dressing for success” and why “retail therapy” actually feels like therapy.

3.Peer Pressure Closet

Our social circles have a VIP pass to our fashion show. Whether it’s the corporate dress codes of the business world or the casual, sometimes avant-garde styles seen in creative fields, our attire can sometimes be heavily influenced by peer pressure and the desire to fit into particular social or professional circles.

4.Label Lust

Fashion is also a power play. The logos we flaunt, the trends we chase, and even the authenticity of what we wear send signals about our place on the social ladder. High-end brands know this all too well, designing their goods to be coveted badges of luxury and aspiration. Even when practicality screams “no,” our inner social climber whispers “yes.”

5.Cultural Threads

Our roots shape our fashion sense too. Cultural norms spell out what’s hot and what’s not, dictate lucky colors for weddings, and even appropriate funeral attire.

6.Comfort Fabric

Sometimes, our fashion picks are less about impact and more about comfort. That beat-up sweater? It’s basically a hug in clothing form. Worn and beloved items act like emotional security blankets, wrapping us in warmth and memories.

7.Weather or Not

Finally, let’s not forget Mother Nature and common sense. They have a major say in our sartorial selections. Rainy days call for sweaters and waterproof jackets—not just to stay dry, but because it’s the smart choice.
