Meet Defence Chief, Musa, Gov. Sani, others Duchess of Sussex to co-host event on leadership with Okonjo-Iweala today

Kingsley Nwezeh in Abuja and John Shiklam in Kaduna

Members of the British Royal Family, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, yesterday, met with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Also yesterday, at a reception by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State for Harry at the Government House in Kaduna, the Prince said he and his wife were in Nigeria to put smile back on faces of wounded soldiers and lift their sprits.

In his remarks at Kaduna, Harry said, the focused of his trip was on the wounded Nigerian soldiers.

He said his wife Meghan couldn't accompany him to Kaduna because she was holding series of meetings in Abuja.

"Thank you for everything that you do as service to this community.

"Focus of this trip is obviously the wounded Nigerian forces, men and women who served in the Nigerian forces to keep people safe and having

"And as we had a conversation with the chief of defence staff a few hours earlier, he acknowledged the smiles on their faces and the fact that opportunity, that moment of being part of the Invictus community put a smile back on their faces.

"So when you talk about lifting the spirit, that is what we are here to do.

"We will build on that morale that anyone that is put in the line of fire with their lives despite injury is not over, he said.

Earlier, the Kaduna State Governor said the Prince’s pursuit of good causes, aligned with his life's long activism for improvement in the condition of the poor.

Sani said: "I am extremely delighted to welcome Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, to Kaduna State, the heartbeat of Northern Nigeria and Nigeria’s Centre of Learning.

Speaking in Nairobi, Kenya, during the wrap-up session of a three-day AllAfrica Media Leaders’ Summit with the theme: “Re-engineering African Media in Times of Critical Transformation,” Obaigbena, who was one of the co-chairs of the summit, stressed that the media was essential in shaping the narrative in Africa. He urged media owners and practitioners to also engage political leaders on the need to deliver good governance to citizens in the continent.

police presence was sighted at the entrance gates of the Assembly Quarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

THISDAY learnt that the Amaewhule-led members of the state assembly had allegedly mobilised the policemen to their three access gates to stop the governor from accessing the facility.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, had on Thursday visited the State Assembly Quarters with many speculating that he may be considering to renovate the facility.

But Amaewhule had stated that they do not want the governor in the facility any more. However, yesterday, over 35 fierce-looking and fully armed policemen and over four security vans were mobilised to all the gates leading into the assembly quarters.

In its ruling yesterday, the court also stopped the affected lawmakers from sitting at the Auditorium of the House of Assembly Quarters located off Aba Road, Port Harcourt or any other place whatsoever to carry out the legislative business of the Rivers State House of Assembly, pending the hearing and determination of the

The report highlighted current exchange rate volatility, stating that the Naira appreciated for most of April almost as quickly as it depreciated earlier in the year.

It explained that recent FX volatility might have been caused in part by the rise of geopolitical tensions in mid-April when Iran launched drone strikes at Israel, which likely prompted foreign investors to sell Naira assets in a flight to safety.

It stated that the investment landscape may have been negatively impacted when recently concluded World Bank/IMF meetings, in Washington D.C, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor,

"Your visit reminds us of another happy event 68 years ago, when Queen Elizabeth II, your grandmother, was welcomed to Kaduna on 2nd February, 1956, by our revered leader, the Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello (of blessed memory)", the governor said.

The governor described the Prince as, "a symbol of courage, perseverance, compassion, and the oneness of humanity" and commended him for his selfless service to the United Kingdom and humanity.

"You made your mark in the United Kingdom's Airforce, attaining the rank of Captain.

"Despite your privileged upbringing and position in the Royal Family, you opted to go to the battlefield in the service of your country.

"You are an inspiration to the youths and an epitome of patriotism."

He also lauded the Prince for his exemplary activism in the area of wildlife conservation, especially in Africa.

"You also helped found a Charity

Obaigbena explained: “This is the time for dialogue amongst media. The time to engage our leaders in good governance is now. It is a matter of shame that you are a Nigerian or a Kenyan or a South African, and you need visa to go across Africa; while in Europe, they cross borders without hindrances.

Motion on Notice filed yesterday, by the newly sworn-in Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, RT. Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo and Hon. Sokari Goodboy Sokari.

Justice Wali gave this order in suit number PHC/1512/CS/2024, filled by Rt. Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo, Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly; Hon. Sokari Goodboy, and Hon. Orubienimigha Timothy, against Hon. Martin Chile Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers.

Also joined as defendants were the Governor of Rivers State, the Attorney-General of Rivers State, and the Chief Judge of Rivers State, respectively.

The court also restrained Governor of Rivers State, the Attorneys-General Rivers State, and the Chief Judge of Rivers State from dealing with, interfacing, accepting any resolutions, bills or interacting with the affected lawmakers in their purported capacities as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, their legislative seats having been declared vacant with effect from 13th December, 2023.

"As governor, I have committed myself to bringing hope to the weak and vulnerable", Sani said.

He said Nigeria and the United Kingdom have had long-standing relationship.

He said, "In the forging of Nigeria - British relations, Kaduna hosted some of the most prominent political and administrative officers from colonial times to the attainment of Nigeria's independence in 1960."

The governor noted that the first British Governor of Northern Nigeria, Sir Frederick Lugard, chose to operate from Kaduna due to its proximity to the Lagos - Kano Railway.

He said Kaduna became the

capital of the defunct Northern Nigeria in 1917 adding that "to date, Kaduna remains the political and cultural capital of Northern Nigeria".

The governor added that Kaduna is home to many military formations, including the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and the Command and Staff College, Jaji, among many others.

Earlier, at Abuja, at the meeting with the CDS, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were accorded a warm reception.

They were received by the wife of the Chief of Defence Staff, Oghogho Musa and wife of the Chief of Army Staff, Mrs. Taoreed Lagbaja.

The duo and their entourage arrived the Defence Headquarters at 12 noon where the Duke inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Defence Headquarters.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan were also entertained by cultural dance troupes.

The visitors later proceeded to a private meeting with the Chief

of Defence Staff.

After 30 minutes, they were later seen off by the Chief of Defence Staff. The royal couple’s visit coincided with the 10th Anniversary of the Invictus Games, a sporting event championed by Prince Harry to support injured servicemen and women.

Prince Harry, who served in Afghanistan, founded the Invictus Games in 2014.

The games offer wounded veterans and service members the opportunity to compete in sports events, notably, paralympics, promoting physical and mental recovery.

During their three-day stay, the royal couple would engage with wounded soldiers and their families, stressing the importance of ongoing support for military personnel. Standard Bank further noted that it expected the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to increase the MPR further, by 100 bps, when it meets on May 20, as inflation was likely to rise further in April and peak in May, based on the bank’s current estimates.

In its reaction to the crisis in the State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said, “the Governor of Rivers State, Siminilayi Fubara is actively and vehemently precipitating his own impeachment through his actions, conduct and infantile comments.”

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka stated this yesterday while addressing a press conference in Abuja.

He added, “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently tendered a hogwash argument that by Section 109 of the Constitution, the 27 House of Assembly members who defected from PDP to APC have forfeited their seats, and echoed the governor’s declaration that the Rivers State House of Assembly is non-existent.

“Contrary to PDP’s assertions, it is not APC that is calling for the impeachment of Governor Fubara. Rather, by his egregious actions, conduct and infantile comments, Fubara is actively and vehemently precipitating his own impeachment.

The report noted the recent decline in gross FX reserves by $2.3 billion, from the year-to date peak of $34.45 billion on March 18, to $32.15 billion as of April 26.

Judge Compels Ex-Kogi Gov, Yahaya Bello to Appear in Court

Fixes June 13 for arraignment

Alex

Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday, granted the application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the former Governor of Kogi, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to appear in court for his trial.

Nwite, in a ruling reiterated that an applicant or defendant who disobeyed the orders of a court of competent jurisdiction was not entitled to be heard by the court.

The judge while remarking that even if his orders were issued in error, "the humble thing for him to do is to make himself available in court."

The court had in a ruling on April 23, ordered the service of the charge containing money laundering allegations against Bello, on his lawyer, Mr. AbdulWahab Mohammed.

The judge had predicated his decision on grounds that having appeared for Bello in the last proceedings, it was only proper that Mohammed received the charge on behalf of the defendant.

After taking submissions from parties, Justice Nwite had fixed May 10, for ruling.

Delivering ruling yesterday, the court agreed with the EFCC that until Bello makes himself available in court for arraignment, the court cannot take his applications or even hear him.

Nwite in the ruling lamented that despite Bello's awareness of the court's orders made on April 17 and 18 and the service of the charge on April 23, the defendant blatantly refused to appear in court in the guise of pending applications, adding that the conduct of the defendant, "clearly shows his intention not to appear before the court".

According to the judge, his orders for the arrest and arraignment of Bello subsisted until it was set aside, pointing out that the defendant's refusal to obey his orders are deliberate ploy to truncate the trial.

The judge stated that Bello "cannot sit in the comfort of his house" while his lawyers are filing various applications to frustrate the trial.

Meanwhile, the judge berated counsel representing Bello for

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has advocated for the revival of the Sambisa Forest which was affected by the Boko Haram insurgency spanning over a decade.

Zulum, made this call while speaking on Thursday in New York at the UN’s High-Level Segment Roundtable on: 'Forest-based solutions to the triple planetary crises: A focus on people, science, technology, and finance'.

The governor said, “Borno State has been significantly impacted by the crisis of insecurity caused by Boko Haram insurgency which has led to widespread displacement of communities, destruction of infrastructure, and loss of livelihoods."

He added that “the conflict has also exacerbated environmental degradation, including deforestation and loss of biodiversity in our major forest (Sambisa Forest), further exacerbating the vulnerabilities of our region.”

He added that: “The loss of forest cover has resulted in soil erosion, reduced water availability, loss of biodiversity and increased vulnerability to climate change impacts.”

Zulum noted that the shrinking of Lake Chad, which was a vital source of water and livelihood for millions of people in the region, has been a direct consequence of climate change resulting from the incessant destruction of forests such as Sambisa.

Benin Blocks China's First Crude Oil Shipment from Niger over Border Dispute

Benin has blocked China’s first shipment of crude oil from Niger amid an ongoing border dispute between the two West African nations arising from a coup that has put a military junta in Niger in power which caused strained relations with other African nations.

China’s first imports of crude oil from Niger’s military junta arrived in Benin in three vessels but were prevented by the authorities from docking at the port.

Benin's President, Patrice Talon, justified the action in a statement, arguing that Niger could not view his country as an enemy and still

The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has pledged the commitment of the National Assembly to support the Nigeria indigenous oil and gas companies to achieve increased production and maximise the potential of the industry in the overall interest of the Nigerian economy.

Speaking while leading a delegation of the Senate on a visit to the exhibition stand of Green Energy International Ltd (GEIL) at the ongoing Offshore Technology Conference OTC in Houston Texas USA, Senator Bamidele commended the company for the innovative development of the Otakikpo Marginal Field in constructing a LPG extraction plant within a record time.

The Chief Executive Officer of Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), Mrs. Rosie Glazebrook, has canvassed for much deepened collaboration with the federal and state governments that would strengthen trade and investment opportunities between Nigeria and other member countries of the Commonwealth.

Glazebrook made a case for deepened collaboration when she led a delegation of CWEIC Strategic Partners during her recent separate meetings with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in Ikaja, Lagos State.

She also pledged the CWEIC’s support to the Nigerian government and highlighted some of the council’s forthcoming events both in Nigeria and outside, including the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit in London in 2025, and the proposed Trade and Investment Summit to be held in

Nigeria in the second half of 2025.

She said: “We want to help boost trade and investment into Nigeria and equally support Nigerian businesses looking out to develop plans for more interactions with foreign partners.

“We will really like to look up ways where we can encourage the Nigerian government and the business community to take advantage of the commonwealth market across the 56 countries and other partners in the Middle-East and North Africa."

Responding to the CWEIC’s delegation, Vice President Shettima said that Nigeria would become a major economic force in the world under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Shettima said: “Nigeria is where the attraction should be for investors all over the world as Nigeria will become a major global economic force under President Tinubu.”

In Lagos, Governor Sanwo-Olu welcomed the CWEIC’s delegation and talked about the huge potential the state offers to investors and the key priority areas of his administration.

Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, said this during his address at the launch of the digital economy report by Groupe Spécial Mobile Association (GSMA), which held Thursday in Abuja.

According to Adebayo, the government must make efforts to address the challenges facing the telecoms sector, and he advised that the telecoms sector should not be a palliative to solve economic woes.

The GSMA digital report, launched in Abuja, highlighted the telecom's eight per cent contribution to Nigeria's GDP and 13.5 when considering the

broader ICT ecosystem. The report also highlighted the significant challenges plaguing the industry including investment challenges, right of way, multiple taxation, and regulation.

Adebayo highlighted the existence of over 45 associated charges and levies on operators, despite the supposed removal of right of way costs.

The British edition of the popular general interest family magazine has been rested, writes Isidore Emeka Uzoatu

Imore so when the deceased is human. But even that is apart from some rare occasions.

However, when the demise is of an inanimate being, one is left more at ease to say the truth. Like the sign outside a church somewhere in the Western Hemisphere urging its congregation to strive to lead better lives. But, unbeknownst to all, this was not just to see them make heaven. More important was the earthly need to save the clergymen from having to tell blatant lies at their funerals. So this morning, urged forth by Keats’ to a nightingale, I finally downed enough glasses of liquids with ‘beaded bubbles’ at their brims to attempt one to the good, old British Edition of the 1922-founded American general-interest family magazine Reader’s Digest. O yes, it’s no longer news that the up-to-then ageless publication got rested last month after a whopping 86 years.

This unforced tear(s) from my reddened eyes should have sufficed. But not without the ensuing eulogy. Not when a guy can hardly recall the first time one set his inchoate eyes on the gem. Of course, born to teacher parents like I was, there was always readable stuff around the house. Though as meagre as their modest salaries, they were always to keep their children busy enough to dream.

Like a dog-eared copy of Pears Encyclopedia, the occasional Reader’s Digest and sundry daily readers that each gets to see upon growing up. Expectedly, we honed our reading and comprehension abilities on them. Much before either of our short hands could boast that envious roundtrip to the alternate ear needed to make school. Inevitably that saw us gaining a mastery of the meaning and usage of words ahead of our peers.

Of course, we waxed strong in the precocious attainment it showered on us for long. Until we chanced upon a picture in one of them. In it, a boy was spying upon a congress of baboons from a covering in a wood. It had him musing thusly: I saw standing before me… Who could have thunk it! To imagine someone seeing something afore of himself. If nothing else, it had us - my elder brother -and I - declaring the volume an anathema.

The truth be told, that misunderstood faux pas remains part of the reason, it was the infrequent back files of the British Edition of Reader’s Digest that ultimately got me. What with its table of contents appearing on its cover. The many articles apart, there were the regular features like Laughter Is The Best Medicine, It Pays To Increase Your Word Power, Humour In Uniform, Book of the Month, Quotable Quotes, Points To Ponder, and their like.

And so it turns out that upon the breaking of the news of the magazine’s ‘death’, my mind had flashed to a copy I had recently acquired from a used-books stall I consult frequently. Dated July 1967, I could not but fish it out from its shelf space in my library. Published when I was a child soldier in Biafra, it served at waking up all the hibernating kicks on offer by the publication.

Like this brief exposè of the content of this edition will opine. Not unlike wine in a cask, it has all the attractions to still pack a punch. In fact , the passage of time appears to have added another

Cfeather to its cap of influence. Enough, indeed, to fill one with too much nostalgia for the decades that have been crossed ever since. Most so, the lead article by James Stewart-Gordon on the achievements of one Colonel Eric Hefford who ‘presents new nations to the World with royal pomp and impeccably timed circumstance’. Titled Britain’s Impresario of Independence, it detailed how the retired British soldier masterminded the Independence celebrations of Nigeria on October 1, 1960; Sierra Leone, April 27 1961; Jamaica, August 6 1962; Tanzania, December 9 1961; Malta, September 21 1964; Guyana, May 26 1966 and Barbados, November 30 1966. According to the story, he resumed the enviable occupation when, upon retirement in 1958, a friend he had met in Africa had asked him over to Nigeria to organise Nigeria’s independence celebrations. In Lagos, there was no hindrance to the sealing of the deal with the Prime Minister, the Late Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Not even when it came to the cost:

Balewa: How much?

Hefford: Ghana spent over a million pounds… Balewa: Fine. We want ours to be twice as good.

Hefford: That will cost two million.

Balewa: Go ahead.

Hefford: I’ll need a million to get started.

Balewa: You can pick it up on your way out.

Reportedly, that of Malta took just 130,000 Pounds.

News about Nigeria apart, the issue was laden with some time-honoured pieces. A stand out is The Man Who Tamed the Motorcycle on a Japanese millionaire who ‘has put his machines on every road in the world. His name? Soichiro Honda. Need I say more? Perhaps the likes of Chief Innocent Chukwuma of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM) and other local innovators in our automotive startups can never walk alone.

Indeed, the articles in the magazine appear to have gained more prominence with age. Like yet another piece on the head of Jesus’ apostles titled Peter, the Sinner Turned Saint. Written by a certain Ernest Hauser it detailed how the ‘(O)ften blundering, often in doubt’ fisherman ‘conquered his many human failings to become… the Rock on which the Christian Church was founded.’

Perhaps, as though to further thicken the potpourri, the Book of the Month back then was Madame Sarah: The Story of Sarah Bernhardt, a condensation of the French actress’ life and times by Cornella Otis Skinner. It detailed the many achievements of the thespian who literally beat her irons unheated; bestriding the taut peripherals between stage and screen with uncanny calm.

Though the publication is still existent in its USA and other editions, I shall still occasionally shed tears for its British Edition. Not unlike I did - and still do - for other local and international periodicals.

Like the humour-packed Punch in London. That one to me was like the crucifixion of laughter.

Locally, I still mourn the closure of Crown Prince and Mister magazines of Lagos where I’d practised the trade.

Uzoatu writes from Onitsha, Anambra State

John-Okoria Ibhakewanlan SJ writes a socio-economic background of tithing, and the practice in many churches today

hristianity in Africa has faced many threats over the decades. Today the greatest threat to the Christian faith in the continent may be from within the church. There seems to be a major distraction from the primary mission of the church, which is to proclaim Jesus as God’s Good News, or Gospel, for humanity and creation.

churches may well be at the expense of the Gospel itself. This article focuses on a particular form of this practice, namely, tithing.

Those who tithe generally base the practice on the Old Testament books of the Bible (Genesis 14:20, 28:22; Leviticus 27:30-33; Numbers 18:21-32; Deuteronomy 14:22; 26:12-14; Malachi 3:8-10). In these and related texts, tithe refers to an offering to God of a tenth of one’s produce. Although the payment of tithes is commended in the Bible, the reader is here invited to reflect on the particular situation that justified the practice in biblical times – which is different from present-day circumstances. Has the practice of tithing today become more of an aberration and a distortion of the original purpose and intention?

The original purpose or reason for the tithe, as expressed in the book of Deuteronomy 26:12-14, is to feed the poor, widows, orphans, sojourners, as well as the Levites (priestly tribe/class in ancient Israel). Importantly, the socio-economic and cultural context that necessitated the payment of tithe is uniquely that of ancient Israel. Is that context and the biblical purpose for tithing in consonance with what churches practice today? It is helpful to briefly recall that ancient context.

In biblical interpretation, it is important to pay attention to the complex socio-economic and cultural context of the Bible in ancient (Bronze Age and Iron Age) Palestine.

Geographically, ancient Palestine refers to the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. It is located in the western end of that crescent stretching from the top of the Persian Gulf toward the Nile valley. Ancient Palestine was the land bridge that connected Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Hence it was a funnel for multiple trade routes for Egypt, Arabia and the Greco-Roman civilizations of Europe. This geographical and commercial positioning also meant military trespassing by the armies of warring empires. Thus ancient Palestine was a nation beleaguered, insecure, and beset on all sides by invading forces which often left in their wake many displaced or impoverished people, widows and orphans.

Besides being a strategic location, ancient Palestine did not have much else. Natural resources were limited. It is Lebanon, not ancient Palestine, that is known to have possessed timber. The ancient Palestinians used the wood from their little forests for building and fuel.

Besides the little iron ore in the east of the Jordan and copper in the south, there was no great mineral wealth in the land. Worse still, for a vastly rural and agrarian people, the land was predominantly rocky – not quite flowing with milk and honey. It was land full of limestone and clay soil. That meant scant arable soil for agriculture. Added to that was an erratic climate.

Rains caused a deluge; the summer sun scorched the soil and drained all the moisture from the rainy season. The people certainly did not possess the kind of irrigation methods evident in Israel today. Droughts and meagre harvests were common. Livestock husbandry, mainly the rearing of goats and sheep, was also at the mercy of the seasonal variation in pasture availability. Farming and herding needed to be well integrated for survival.

Socio-culturally, ancient Palestine was generally a stratified society of mostly uneducated citizens. People were radically separated by class and related divisions. The biblical literature itself was the product of a literary elite. Biblical authors were predominantly urban male. Women were mostly relegated to the private or domestic sphere of life. Events and history in general were dominated more by strong personalities rather than by a stable social system.

The primary mode of settlement was a village living based on subsistence activities.

Ancient Israelites mostly lived in the countryside

or rural areas. Despite the Bible’s emphasis on urban life, which is apparently a reflection of the urban biblical authors themselves, most people neither lived in cities nor towns. During the monarchical period, urban-rural relations was marked by the appropriation through taxation of the productive output of rural communities. In the book of Nehemiah 10:38-39, for example, Levites travelled from village to village collecting tithes for building the post-exilic Temple. Monarchical taxation financed the rich lifestyle of the urban elite.

Within this vastly subsistent agricultural-pastoral living of ancient Palestine, where labour was only guaranteed by a family structure, it would have been extremely difficult for orphans, widows, and other poor people, to survive. It was therefore crucial, in a context where the spiritual and the material were intertwined, to religiously mandate support (tithe) for the poor, orphans and widows.

In addition to the tithe being used for the support of orphans, widows, sojourners and other poor people, it was also for the support of the Levites. A little background would be helpful here. The religious life of ancient Israel was centered on the institution of the temple.

God was believed to be present in the temple, especially after the Ark of the Covenant was moved into the holiest room in the temple. It was where God dwelt on earth. Since the temple mediated divine presence, adherents experienced that presence via the offering of sacrifice.

Tabernacle cult helped to bring the sacred (God) and the profane (people) together. Who then was to offer that mediating sacrifice to God in the Temple?

Chapters 18 and 19 of the book of Numbers provide guidelines for approaching God. Not everyone could come near the Lord of heaven and earth. Today, Christians generally view God as loving and approachable. That is new. Ancient Israelites were afraid of the proximity of divine holiness. In the book of Numbers (17:28) the people exclaimed to Moses: “Anyone who approaches the tabernacle of the Lord will die! Will there be no end to our perishing?”

God’s holiness meant that only holy persons

could approach the divine dwelling place. In ancient Israel, the High Priest was the holiest, followed in rank by the other priests and Levites.

The Levites assisted the priests and helped perform the ceremonies of purification and other services in the house of God. They guarded the sanctuary so that no lay person may encroach that sacred place. That huge responsibility helped to alleviate the people’s fear of God’s lethal presence. A subsequent implication of this Levitical service is that the Levites became responsible for collecting the temple tax. They had to be compensated for this service.

The book of Numbers 18:21-24 makes it clear that a tenth of a person’s earning should be given to the Levites. For the dangerous task of service of the tabernacle, God “assigned to the Levites as their heritage the tithes which the Israelites put aside as contribution to the Lord”.

(Numbers 18:24). Note the unique context of this tithe. Yes, it was a required payment for all Israelites. But, interestingly, the condition for the Levites receiving the tithe is that “they will not have any heritage among the Israelites.” So, the priests and the Levites had no allotment of land in Canaan. Strictly, there was a divine command to Aaron that priests cannot possess land (Numbers 18:20). Clearly, the tithe received by the Levites served as a form of compensation substituting for ownership of land. Also, the Levitical priests themselves must pay their own tithe, “a tithe of the tithe”, as described in a divine speech singularly made to Moses (Numbers 18:25-32) rather than with Aaron – who was to actually receive the tithe from the Levites. The penalty for the Levites withholding their own tithe was death. There may be a serious implication here for those collecting tithes today!

Therefore, the payment of tithe was clearly not meant to enrich the one collecting the tithes. In fact, there was hardship for local Levitical priests when cult centralization cut off their income from the tithes of locals. This is because tithing became linked to cult centralization.

MAY 11, 2023 • THISDAY, THE SATURDAY NEWSPAPER 12 COMMENTARY

Why Fubara Cannot be Impeached

Rivers State has 32 state constituencies. This means that the state has 32 House of Assembly members. Currently, there are two factions of the House. One led by Martin Amaewhule and the other led by the new speaker, Oko Jumbo.

All the House of Assembly members were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election. However, about 27 of them had long defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). One of them had died last year and the independent national electoral commission (INEC) is yet to conduct a by-election to fill the vacancy several months later.

That the defected lawmakers have a greater number on their side does not confer legitimacy on them. Their defection to the APC is still a subject of litigation by a group of civil society organization. The minority faction even with just three members including the speaker has legitimacy on their side. The greater number or greater amount of illegality can never make it legal.

The minority faction which had last year passed the current fiscal budget for the state has all legitimacy and constitutionality on its side. In this case, numbers do not matter. For instance, assuming in a state assembly that comprises 50 lawmakers, 47 of them unfortunately have a fatal accident like a plane crash (God forbid), will the surviving three lawmakers not carry out their duties as lawmakers until the 47 vacancies are filled? Will the remaining three lawmakers not elect a speaker among themselves to continue with the business of legislation or will the state be grounded until the 47 vacancies are filled?

Since Rivers State has two factions of the state assembly now, the activities of the other faction even with greater majority will remain null, void and of no effect until the courts of the land interpret their defection. All their activities so far including the purported intention to impeach the governor will remain invalid until perhaps the supreme court finally confers legitimacy on them by upholding their defection to the APC. Unfortunately for them, they can not return to the PDP now even if they so wish. They shot themselves on the foot by hurriedly defecting to the APC even when their godfather is still claiming

to still be a member of the PDP. They would have had every authority and legality to frustrate the governor as they are currently doing if they had remained in the PDP with their overwhelming majority. But God put confusion in their midst and they made a costly mistake of defection. Nigerians are waiting to see how the courts of the land will interpret their defection since there’s no crisis in their former party.

Just like the governor recently said, they are floating on air. It’s just a matter of time before they know their fate on the issue of defection. It behoves on the Nigerian courts to give this matter speedy or accelerated hearings and conclusion since the matter of interpreting defection does not require a load of exhibits and calling of witnesses. This matter can be thrashed out within a year even if it goes up to the supreme court. The interpretations of the courts will also help to deepen democracy in the country. The final interpretation of this vexatious issue of defection will set a precedent in the country even though there seems to be a precedent already on the matter.

Katagum LGA offers scholarship to candidate who scored 347 in JAMB

Professor of Political Economy and management expert, Prof. Pat Utomi, has disclosed the groups that will form the mega political party to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Some politicians including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the last presidential election, Atiku Abubukar and the presidential candidate of the Labour party, Peter Obi, are said to be involved on how to form a mega political party ahead of the general election in 2027.

Utomi, who is the chief promoter of the mega political party meant to upstage the APC in 2027, said that the redemption of the country could not be achieved by the ruling APC, or any of the opposition parties.

While listing the groups, Utomi said the present political parties failed Nigerians, noting that He they have not added value to nation-building.

According to him, the planned mega party is to disrupt the current political order and deliver that impactful leadership that the country truly deserves.

He said, “It is precisely the reason I arrived in Nigeria yesterday (Wednesday) to continue that work (formation of a mega party).

“I believe that the political party system in Nigeria has failed completely. Political parties are not democratic and they are not serving the purpose.

“Political parties and politicians of these parties cannot save Nigeria now. It is clear.

“The nature and the structure of our politics is such that even good people, when they enter these existing political parties, will play to their interests.”

Utomi, Founder of the Centre for Values in Leadership, returned to Nigeria on Wednesday after a long stay in the United States of America.

Also, he was the presidential candidate of the African Democratic

However, Obi who was reacting to the recent JAMB results, lamented the low scores among the students when compared with others in developing countries.

In a statement he signed, Obi said, "We must prioritise education

The presidential candidate of the Labour party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has canvassed the need for aggressive investment in education, stressing that education remains the key to development in Nigeria. This was just as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Musa Azare, announced that he has taken full responsibility of paying the school fees of Abdullahi Aliyu Garba, who scored a total of 347 marks in the recent Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.

Congress (ADC) in 2007.

According to Utomi, parochial culture has consumed civic culture in the country and this has affected the mindset of politicians.

“We want Nigerians to develop that mindset. Right now, the mindset

as a key driver of development by aggressively investing in education, enhancing teacher training programmes, and implementing inclusive policies."

Stressing further, Obi said, "The recent revelation regarding the JAMB UTME 2024 results and percentages has sparked deep concern about the state of education in our country.

that Nigerians have is me, myself, and I.

“Self-love is so consuming and that is why Nigerian politicians don’t act in the interest of the people or the state. They act so narrowly in their self-interests,” he said.

Ondo APC Primary: Group Calls for Suspension of Ibrahim, Oke Over Alleged Attempt to Undermine Democratic Process

Fidelis David in Akure

A group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Ondo Peoples Assembly (OPA) yesterday condemned the alleged continued attempts by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim and Olusola Oke (SAN) to undermine the democratic process and instigate crisis following the recently concluded APC gubernatorial primary in the state.

THISDAY reported that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa was declared winner of the April 20 APC primary in the state after polling 48, 569 votes to defeat Jimoh Ibrahim, Olusola Oke

and 13 other aspirants in the contest.

Since the announcement, some aggrieved aspirants including Ibrahim and Oke have continuously called for the cancellation of the exercise over alleged irregularities.

However, Olufemi Lawson, the convener of Ondo Peoples Assembly (OPA) while speaking at a press conference held at the NUJ Press Centre in Akure the state capital, said the group is deeply displeased by the relentless efforts to discredit Governor Aiyedatiwa and the process, which has been adjudged by the APC and observers of the process, as free, fair

and credible.

"It is with deep dismay that we address the sustained attacks on the personality of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim and some supporters of Chief Olusola Oke, who were among the losers of the primary.

"It is indisputable, that Governor Aiyedatiwa emerged as the winner of the primary through a transparent and democratic process. It is therefore unacceptable that individuals would seek to undermine the will of the people and disrupt the peace and stability of our state.

Fear Grips Students, Parents, Mgt as Gunmen Invade CUSTECH Campus Abduct Many in Kogi

Ibrahim Oyewale in Lokoja

Palpable fear gripped the students, parents and management of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) as gunmen invaded the campus in Osara in Kogi State and abducted several students.

Owing to the unfortunate development, President of the

Senate, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Babatunde Afeez, urged the federal government to beef up security around all tertiary institutions in the country.

THISDAY gathered that both students and staff of the institution were abducted by the gunmen on Thursday night.

The Vice Chancellor of the

university, Prof. Abdulrahaman Salawu, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to the journalists in Lokoja, yesterday.

"This is to inform the general public that Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara experienced an unfortunate security incidence on Thursday 9th May, 2024 around 8:23p.m.

"These statistics paint a troubling picture that demands urgent national attention and discussion.

"The distribution of scores is alarming, with only 0.5 per cent of candidates reportedly scoring 300 (75 per cent) and above, while a staggering 76 per cent scored below 200 (below 50 per cent).

"This highlights a systemic issue within our education sector indicating a significant lack of attention to this very critical contributor to national development. This brings to limelight an obvious gap in the quality of education provided nationwide. Education remains a critical determinant of a nation's progress on the Human Development Index (HDI)."

The former Anambra State governor said these are within medium and high HDI.

According to Obi, "Though we claim as a nation that our literacy rate is above 50 per cent, which is far below the global average of about 80 per cent and continues to lag behind other comparable countries like Iran, Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh and the Philippines with literacy rates of above 70 per cent.

"This again, underscores the

systemic challenge in access to quality education, particularly in rural areas," Obi stressed.

He said, "One of the consequences of the reported general poor performance in UTME is that with our population of over 200 million, Nigeria can only boast of about two million full-time students in different universities.

"While Iran with a population of over 89 million has over 8.2 million students in one university alone, Islamic Azad University, Bangladesh with a population of about 173 million boasts of over two million enrolled undergraduates in the National University of Bangladesh.

"This underscores the urgency of the attention needed in our education sector. In solving this challenge, we must prioritise education as a key driver of development by aggressively investing in education, enhancing teacher training programmes, and implementing inclusive policies.

"A new Nigeria is indeed POssible!," Obi stated.

Meanwhile, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Katagum LGA, Azare has taken full responsibility for paying the school fees of Garba who scored a total of 347 marks in the recent JAMB examination.

The Jamaican government has announced its intention to pursue a robust collaboration with Nigeria in the film and animation industries.

The Jamaican High Commissioner to Nigeria, HE Lincoln Downer, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, in Abuja.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the minister on Media and Publicity, Nneka Ikem Anibeze, Downer emphasised the strong relations between Jamaica and Nigeria, highlighting the existing creative industry exchanges and expressing enthusiasm for expanding these collaborations.

He noted that Nigeria has supported Jamaica through the technical eco-prograe, which has facilitated

exchanges in areas like Batik and jewelry-making.

“There is a lot of scope for collaboration, particularly in the area of film and animation. Nigeria has supported Jamaica over many years in the creative industry through the technical eco-programme, where artisans have been dispatched to Jamaica for exchanges in areas of Batik and jewelry-making.

“We are hoping that sometime in the future, these collaborations can be expanded. We also note that Nigeria and Jamaica are in very close relations when it comes to entertainment. A lot of Nigerian entertainers like Burner Boy and WizKid, have come to Jamaica, and even Victor Thompson who was in Jamaica last month. We are looking forward to these sorts of exchanges between both countries and to see how we can establish a framework for deeper collaboration between the two countries.

Enugu Govt, Pragmatic Palms Seal

N100bn Deal to Revive United Palm Ltd

In continuation of its bid to revive and convert its dormant assets to productive assets, the Enugu State Government has signed a N100bn deal with Pragmatic Palms Ltd., a subsidiary of Diamond Stripes Ltd, to resuscitate and boost the moribund Enugu State United Palm Products Ltd (UPPL).

The partnership will see Pragmatic Palms transform one of the agricultural and agro-industrialisation initiatives of the late premier of the defunct Eastern Region, Dr. Michael Okpara, which has been fallow for ages.

Speaking during the contract signing, Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, said the move was in line with his administration’s determination to grow the state’s economy exponentially, from $4.4 billion to $30 billion dollars, assuring the investors that his government would play its own part.

“This is a moment we must all be very proud of because it represents a major leap in our quest towards the revival of our dormant assets in line with our vision and the promises we made to our people.

“This investment outlay of over N100bn is very significant because we also see agriculture beyond food security. We see agriculture as business.

“I want to assure you that the government you are dealing with is business-facing, and given my background as an entrepreneur, we understand what it means to have the ease of doing business. So, we are going to ensure that this will be an experience that you shall use as a reference point. We shall be very responsive, and we are going to make sure that this partnership works for the benefit of the company and also that of Enugu State. So, what we are doing here today will also mark the beginning of great things ahead,” Mbah stated.

Fielding questions from journalists, the Enugu State Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry, Adaora Chukwu, described the deal as a milestone, listing its many socio-economic benefits to the state.

“Today, we witnessed a remarkable milestone. Recall that before His Excellency came on board, one of the first promises he made to the people of Enugu State was to revive our none operational asset and United Palm Products Ltd. is one significant asset that has been dormant for years. And what we did today is the partial handover and the contract signing of UPPL to a company called Pragmatic Palm Ltd, which is a subsidiary of Diamond Stripes Ltd.

“The economic significance of what we did today is huge: The number of jobs it will create, the multiplier effect in terms of increasing production in the oil palm industry. You know that oil palm is an export commodity. We are not talking about the forex earnings into the state and also the building of capacity in-house,

technology transfer, as well as skills and knowledge transfer to the people of Enugu State,” she said.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Diamond Stripes, George Nwangwu, said that palm products were in high demand, noting that Enugu State United Palm Products Limited was capable of kick-starting the economic transformation of Enugu State. He explained, “We have to realise that agriculture is a business. We are going to bring in a lot of equipment; we are going to process the palm. Not just the palm, the palm kernel is an export commodity. If you go back and look at the biggest import over the years, palm is actually number five on the list. So, it is a significant product, and we tend to make sure we optimise its potential here. "First of all, we have to secure the asset. UPPL is in three locations. The first thing is to secure it and optimise it, and then we look at how we can add other benefits to the state"

of the gaffe by Dr. Tunji Alausa', the pharmacists condemned the hasty declaration of the ban and the directive to all Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Hospitals to procure their syringes and needles from only National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) approved local manufacturers.

In the document signed by its National Chairman, Adewale Oladigbolu, and National Secretary, Omokhafe Ashore, ACPN which described Alausa’s circular

The circular, HMSH&SW/CMDs/ MDs/FTHs/ Circular/S&N/03 dated March 28, 2024, called for the “Use of locally manufactured needles and syringes,” signed by the Hon. Minister in charge of the Federal Ministry of Social Welfare, "appears a misnomer in many aspects and ramifications,’’ ACPN stated.

"We have been able to get to many local governments, including Orumba North and South, Dunukofia, Aguata and many more. We still have some more local governments to deliver.

"Our distribution process is that we use president general of town unions. Each community will get 50 bags of 10 kg of rice, and because it is meant for indigent people, we have devised a means to ensure that it gets to the people it is intended for.

"What we do is that we request that while handing the bags over to indigent people, they take photographs and videos and send them to us, which we also post on our platform to confirm that it got to the intended people."

Michael Olugbode in Abuja

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) yesterday disclosed that the National Identity Number (NIN) has reached 107.338,044, showing a growth of 3.2 million from the 104 million reported as at the end of last year.

The Commission also announced ongoing plans to introduce a general multipurpose NIN card for which Nigerians will be required to pay.

She further mentioned that the Commission intends to review the prices for its services to improve service delivery to Nigerians, noting that the Commission would prosecute any staff members caught conniving with illegal actors.

She said: “All we are trying to do is to ensure that we provide a

African Steel Not Shut Down, Observes Highest Ethical Standards, Says Mgt

The management of African Steel Limited has refuted recent media reports of a purported shut down of its Ikorodu steel factory by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for standards infractions.

Describing the publications as false, the company attributed the report to the handiwork of some competitors who thrive in gaining advantage through unfair business practices.

In a statement, the company’s Director, Ravi Sharma, explained that officials of SON recently visited the premises of African Steel, Ikorodu in the course of their regulatory oversight, took inventory of already manufactured steel products and took samples for further regulatory processes with proper documentation.

He said the company is aware that similar regulatory steps were undertaken by SON to the premises of other steel manufacturers across the country, stressing that, at no time did SON officials shut down the company.

He said, “African Steel Limited is a member of the African Industries Group which commits to the highest ethical standards in all its operations in Nigeria and across the globe.

"We therefore assure our numerous Customers of quality products at all times and advise them to ignore the untrue publications.”

Sharma restated the group's commitment to upholding the highest standards of its manufactured products and providing services that conform with all regulatory requirements in view of its huge investment in the Nigerian economy which includes an integrated iron

ore mining, processing and steel production plant located in Kajuru, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna state with a capital outlay in the region of $600 million.

However, SON Director, Steel Sector Product Certification, Enebi Onucheyo, also corroborated the African Steel narrative and confirmed that neither the facility of the company nor those of any other steel manufacturer was shut down in the latest exercise.

According to him, “Rather, spot inspections were carried out, inventories and samples taken and products were kept on hold with proper documentation to enable SON conduct laboratory tests and analysis in order to arrive at

informed conclusions in line with our organisation’s standards operating procedure.”

He further clarified that SON nationwide regulatory action was part of routine exercises usually carried out periodically without notice, to checkmate the production and circulation of substandard iron rods in the Nigerian markets.

He said SON remained determined to clamp down on standards infractions in all sectors of the economy with particular emphasis on products classified as life-endangering, adding that such infractions will be duly prosecuted in line with the provisions in the SON Act and other extant laws of the nation.

The Managing Director of Henkel Nigeria Limited, Mr. Rajat Kapur, in this interview speaks on how cost efficiency and innovation enable his company to run at nearly 100 per cent manufacturing capacity. DIKE ONWUAMAEZE brings the excerpts:

Those w How are the challenges in the Nigerian operating environment affecting Henkel’s operation in the country?

That is a tough question to start with but I think that there is no disputing the fact, and I think that everybody in Nigeria knows that, that it is tough not just because of the Naira devaluation but also because of the volatility of the Naira, which does not enable easy planning. But I think that what is most important is that in the end we must realise that this is a country of 200 plus million people. So there is a vast potential and opportunity. And as the government drives to fix the volatility that opportunity still exists on the ground. To navigate this, the easiest thing is to look at two bouquets. The first bouquet is your cost structure and how you can be more efficient when it comes to energy, usage of materials and the way you are doing business on the ground. That is one of the Henkel’s global goals of doing sustainable business by reducing not only energy consumption but by being able to produce at the same quality. Henkel is the first company in Nigeria to move to fully dissolvable formula. That has two benefits. One, it means that you will get the full benefit of the formula. The second benefit is that because it dissolves fully, it will not harm marine lives. This is giving two benefits at the same time: sustainability and better efficiency. The second bouquet is more on the consumers. You need to understand the consumers’ needs. You can divide Nigerian consumers into two categories: the mass consumers and the premium consumers. For the mass consumers, you need to have the right offering: efficiency at value cost. For the premium consumers you need to come up with other things that they need on top efficiency and cost. So, is diversification of your portfolio and looking at the Nigerian landscape ways of tackling this challenge of volatility in the market. Is it going to be hundred per cent easy? No! But always keeping it in the back of your mind that you have 200 million plus consumers on the ground will make it easier for you to survive the volatility and wait for better times to come.

Are you considering expansion to other markets beyond Nigeria or across the West African market?

I can answer this in a simple way. We came to Nigeria in 2016 and the entire rationale of coming to Nigeria was that we will take the strongest place as the base for expansion into West and Sub-Saharan Africa. And we want to continue on that vision that we use Nigeria as a base to offer operation which will expand first into the West African markets like Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso and even to Cameroun, which is not part of ECOWAS but is a country that is close by to Nigeria.

How far have you achieved this vision of producing in Nigeria and exporting to other countries?

There are products that are going into Chad and Ghana. But in the coming weeks, hopefully we will have formula for people in other countries like Ghana that will increase the efficiency of our manufacturing and also helps us to get more foreign exchange into Nigeria at a much higher rate. Are we there 100 per cent? No! Absolutely not! Are we still moving in that direction? The answer is yes. We are making partners on the ground in the relevant countries to further expand in a very formal setting.

Are you meeting your timelines in realising this vision?

We were able to meet most of the timeline in 2022 despite COVID-19 being on the ground and causing some challenges. Our manufacturing footprint is being utilised at nearly 100 per cent capacity level. The recent volatility that we have seen has impacted us to some level so there have been some delays in the past one year. But if you ask in the past eight years, I will say that we are practically on time though we have seen some delays because of the recent challenges. So, I am sure that we will catch up on the timelines. But in 2022 we were pretty on the time lime especially at the expansion. Imagine that we were operating virtually at 100 per cent capacity utilization, which is a dream for most manufacturers. There had been some setbacks in the last year but I am hopeful that with all the measures being put on the ground that we will get the whole thing going again.

What are your sustainability goals?

We do a lot of things that have societal impacts on the ground. But I will talk about two that we focus on. We have a global programme that has been brought to Nigeria that targets primary school kids by teaching them STEM skills. What is interesting there is that they will contribute to the economy in a better way if you can get them to get interested in science, technology and mathematics and they pursue this line to become engineers, scientists and researchers. This programme has already impacted on about 2000 students. We started with Ibadan and have come to Lagos and are preparing to expand to other parts of Nigeria. The other project that we do in a big way is what we call “Peer to Peer (P2P)” that gives opportunity to the unemployed youths to become entrepreneurs. They are youths that want to do something that is positive and gainful but does not get the opportunity. What we do in this case is to invest in them by training them on how to sell in the market, providing them with mobile shops, teaching them accounting on how to manage cash flow and we give them the skills. We are letting them to start their own business at zero cost to themselves. As they sell and make money we can give them credit lines from our distributors to pick more products so that they can sell more. We started with two youths in 2018. Today we have more than 250 such P2P entrepreneurs on the ground. For me, this is the classic example of turning job seekers into job makers. I have a lot of examples when a person who started with us as jobless person is today a retailer with people working under him. These are our two main initiatives but we are also working on a project in an orphanage in Ibadan to help the people in the orphanage. We have an international world giving day where employees and team members donate their time to go and help on the ground or cleaning the street or doing something else.

How are you managing to stay afloat?

The only way to do this is to stay close to the consumers and to launch innovations fast enough. Also, invest strongly on the structures that are on the ground, keep looking at the macro trends, keep adapting and focusing on innovations. Over the past year, we have launched new technologies like anti-bacterial detergent that cleans and removes bacteria from the clothes. We have been in existence for 147 years. We have a huge global portfolio which we can bring into Nigeria and adapt them for the Nigerian needs. That gives us two approaches. One is coming up with local ideas that we launch for Nigerians. The other is to look at our global portfolio and adapting it to local needs as much as possible. That is the way we keep addressing the changing needs of Nigerians.

How has it been getting the appropriate workforce for your operations in Nigeria?

There is high availability of human resources on the ground. But at the same time you need to invest a lot in their training on vocational skills. We invest properly and systematically in bring up the local talent. The challenges of finding the right talent here are similar to challenges in any country. But the advantage that we have is a legacy of knowing how to build within the organisation. Whether it is in Germany or 73 countries that we operate in, we have systematic way of building local talent on the ground. The arrangement should be that at the end of the day the organisation is running sustainably.

Looking ahead, what do you think is the future for Henkel Nigeria?

We are pioneers at heart for the good of generations. This is what we believe in. At the end of the day what is critical is that we are not thinking short term but for the future on the long term. What is important for us is to have sustainable manufacturing footprint on the ground, including efficiency in energy utilisation that is built on sustainability on the ground. We are conscious that what we want to achieve will be beneficial for the oncoming generation. We will not be a business that is there for only 10 or 20 years. We should be a business that lives for hundreds of years. Because of this, having the right people, having the right processes, having the right manufacturing footprint on the ground are very important. That is what we want to do. We believe that our products should appeal to the changing needs of Nigerians and we ensure that the company is able to deliver them very sustainably with profitable results irrespective of challenges and volatility on the ground. Our idea is volatility proof operating system. That is what I will say.

What percentage of local inputs do you have in your products?

On raw materials, 70 per cent are sourced locally and that is critical to our cost efficiency also. Imagine we are to import all these raw materials and everything from outside when foreign exchange (FX) is very volatile? If we have been doing that, we will be far more exposed to FX volatility. It is in our own benefit to source more inputs locally as much as possible. Only patent raw materials that cannot be made locally that we are importing currently.

How are you positioning your organisation for the emerging AfCFTA market?

We are still at our step one, which is expanding and taking advantage of the ECOWAS sub-region, which is where we are currently. And we have not taken the full advantage of ECOWAS yet. Once we have achieved our step one then we will leverage the AfCFTA on step two and expand the base further.

What does it take to be a distributor with your organisation?

It takes a lot of things. But what we consider most imposrtant are collaborative and entrepreneurial spirits. We are not looking at only what you bring to the table in terms of money. We are willing to invest in our distributors to make them grow with us and a lot of them have. But, first of all what it takes is collaboration, which is very important in arriving at mutually agreeable position. For me, the entrepreneurial and collaborative spirits are more important than the money because the money will always come. Money is important but it is not the key point in starting the relationship.

What advice do you have for the government on improving the business environment in the country?

I truly, truly believe that it is a tough time for everybody. If you look at it from an economist’s point of view, every decision that has been taken by the government ii fundamentally the right decision for the country. Yes, it is causing volatility and shocks but I honestly believe that many countries have gone through this and emerged better off for it. I do not have any real advice to give to the government but I must say that whatever they are doing, they must systematically keep doing and follow through with what they are doing already.

Kim Pankyu: Strengthening Cultural Ties Can Improve Nigeria- Korea Relations

The Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Kim Pankyu, recently had a parley with journalists in Abuja, where he laid bare his plan to strengthen his country’s relations with Nigeria and things put in place to ensure success of the upcoming first Korea-Africa Summit. Michael Olugbode brings the excerpts

Can you introduce yourself?

Iam Kim Pankyu, the new Korean Ambassador to Nigeria. As some of you might know, I served almost 40 years in the Korean navy and this is my first time to serve as an ambassador representing my country. I feel honoured to be once again given the opportunity to work for my country, especially in this important and beautiful country. Already more than 50 days have passed after I first arrived in Abuja. I think it might be fair to say that I had a busy first 50 days. I met many Nigerian counterparts and diplomat colleagues to get the idea of what I need to do as a Korean ambassador to this country. I also visited Lagos, the business hub of not only Nigeria, but also Africa. I met Koreans doing business there and listened to how Nigeria is changing. At the same time, I tried to visit places where I can experience Nigerian culture such as Nike Art Gallery. I was deeply impressed by vivid and bold colours. All these experiences helped me identify priorities for my time in Abuja. First and foremost, I would like to do my best to further expand economic exchanges between Korea and Nigeria. Promoting economic partnership has always been the focus since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between both countries 44 years ago. Nigeria is already Korea’s top five trade partners in Africa. I believe we can do more. Since the current Nigerian government is actively carrying out economic reform to improve business environment in Nigeria, I will introduce this change to Korean companies and encourage them to venture into Nigeria and make investment. Secondly, I will explore ways to deepen security cooperation drawing on my expertise in military and security affairs. In particular, I would like to focus on promoting cooperation on maritime security because securing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea is essential not only for coastal countries including Nigeria but also for countries passing through this region including Korea. In addition, I intend to expand Korea’s support for capacity building of the Nigerian military and security officers. Also, I will try to facilitate people-to-people exchange between the two countries. I believe culture has the power to connect people and improve understanding of each other. Korean Culture Centre in Abuja has played an important role in introducing Korean culture in Nigeria so far. I will do my best to provide Nigerians with more opportunities to experience various Korean cultural contents. I will also explore ways to let more Nigerian students can study in Korea. I believe the first Korea-Africa Summit to be held in June in Seoul, will be a momentous occasion for the relations between Korea and Africa and also Korea and Nigeria. The inaugural Korea-Africa Summit is expected to be the largest international gathering under the current administration. This reflects President Yoon Suk-yeol’s commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial, sustainable, and strategic long-term partnership with Africa, aligning

with Korea’s vision of becoming a Global Pivotal State. This marks a significant step in Korea’s comprehensive strategy to engage more deeply with the Global South, reflecting our commitment to global inclusiveness and cooperation.

Korea will host many side events on this occasion including Korea-Africa Business Summit and forums on ICT, health, tourism and energy. These events will help us come up with practical and concrete measures to expand cooperation. During the Summit, there will be plenty of opportunities for Nigeria and Korea to explore ways to expand their bilateral economic and cultural exchanges both between governments and private sectors. In a nutshell, I believe the upcoming Korea-Africa Summit will set a new milestone in the relationship between Korea and Africa.

What are objectives South Korea aims to achieve with the upcoming Korea-Africa Summit in terms of economic cooperation and investment opportunities?

During the summit, leaders will engage in discussions centered on developing win-win strategies by leveraging the respective comparative advantages of both Africa and Korea, creating interactive opportunities that benefit both parties. Korea’s expertise in development, coupled with its unwavering commitment to aid advanced technologies, positions it to catalyse Africa’s economic growth and sustainable development. Meanwhile, Africa’s burgeoning market and ambitious development agendas offer avenues for Korea’s own growth and supply chain diversification. Above all, Korea will ensure that the results of the discussions are translated into concrete initiatives and projects. I believe it will lead to increase in joint economic projects and Korea’s investment in African countries.

What should Nigerians expect from the summit?

First of all, I believe Nigeria’s participation in the Summit is something natural, considering that Nigeria is the largest economy and the most populous country in Africa and that currently it is the chair of ECOWAS. The Nigerian delegation’s participation in the summit will help translate Korea’s interest in Nigeria into practical cooperation and initiatives. Many Korean companies are interested in the Nigerian market and considering doing business in Nigeria, however, there are certain obstacles that should be addressed. Problems of double taxation and profit repatriation are major concerns. During the summit, the Nigerian government can share what it has been doing to address these problems and assure the Korean business community that the business environment in Nigeria is improving. I believe it will facilitate Korean companies’ investment in Nigeria. On the sidelines of the upcoming summit, many side events including Korea-Africa business summit will be held. Various forums on energy, ICT, health, tourism, etc. will be held and these events will help explore practical ways to strengthen and expand cooperation in these areas.

What advantages does the upcoming Korea-Africa Summit have for Nigeria and Nigeria-Korea bilateral cultural

relations?

On the occasion of the Summit, many events to introduce African countries and their culture to Koreans will be held. For example, 2024 Africa Culture Festival will be held this week in Seoul. I believe these kinds of events will help improve Korean people’s understanding of African culture and contribute to facilitating cultural exchange between Korea and Africa, and also between Korea and Nigeria.

We have seen many Western and Asian superpowers holding summits to expand relations with Africa. Why do you think the Korea-Africa Summit is important how does it benefit Africa and Africans?

Having experienced the oppression of colonisation and having overcome the ravages of war, Korea possesses a profound understanding of the challenges and aspirations of African nations, more than any other country in the world. Among the countries who already held Summit with Africa, not a single country has such history that Korea and Africa share. Korea overcame those obstacles and achieved remarkable growth not solely by itself but with the support of the international community. Moreover, Korea boasts a diverse array of technologies, ranging from traditional industries to cutting-edge innovations. This technological prowess positions Korea to offer tailored solutions to address the varied needs of African countries. Leveraging Korea’s expertise in education and vocational training, alongside Africa’s abundant youth population, presents a significant opportunity for Africa’s capacity-building and skill development initiatives, empowering its youth and driving economic growth. Through the Korea-Africa Summit, we are eager to share our unique and unparalleled experience with all African countries, embodying the true value of solidarity.

My Regret is Not Commercialising My Music Stella Monye:

Stella Monye, the “Oko Mi ye” crooner, was a popular name in the 80s when she released her hit album, “Mr. Right.” She dominated the national scene and participated in several tours, both at home and abroad, representing Nigeria. However, the accident her son, Ibrahim, had while she was on one of the international tours seriously affected her career and slowed her down. She speaks with Ferdinand Ekechukwu about her life, career, son as well as advises the present crop of female artistes about how to remain focused.... excerpts

Can you bring us up to date about your life and music career at the moment?

Not much has been done. I’ve been away because of my son’s medical condition. We’ve been away in the United States trying to undergo treatment for him. I’m sure a lot of persons know about my son’s incident and are aware of the accident he had some years back when I was on a national engagement. I had to put a stop to my career because I felt if I hadn’t gone away on career work and national engagement my son wouldn’t have had the accident because I would have kept an eye on him. So, because I felt guilty that I was not there for him as a mother, that’s why what happened to him, happened to him, I had to take time off. I had to go on break from my career to attend to him. The surgery has taken a toll on him as he has had so many surgeries. We have been to India and back. Then we left for the US after going to many hospitals in Lagos. It’s been a very long, tormenting journey. But we thank God he’s almost there. He’s still undergoing systematic medical procedure at NYU Langdon Health, New York. So, that’s where we are now. Recently, I recorded a single that will be released by an American producer who wrote me a song out of inspiration and sent it to me. I have done the song and I have sent it back to him, I don’t know what the outcome of that will be. But I look forward to something good from that.

But 40yrs after you made your debut as an artiste, can you take us back a bit to your early beginning and what sparked your interest in music?

I was in school; I was in University of Ife studying drama and I know I did a lot of things that have to do with entertainment. I was into drama, I was into music, I sang with Nelly Uchendu (late). Music was not really a focus for me until I wrote that song ‘Oko mi Ye’ that became a mega hit because of that African theme. Even before people like Chaka Chaka, and late South African girl that was as well popular in Nigeria (Brenda Fassie), I started that African beat with ‘Oko mi Ye’. It was just a joke because I was just messing around with somebody on a piano and I came up with the song. Somebody heard the song and said “the song is fantastic you know you have to do something with it, you can’t just leave it. You can take it to EMI Records.” So, I took it to EMI the next thing a message came to my father’s house that my song came first at the panel. You know the whole thing started from there and smashed everywhere. That was it and I just said, “So, I’m a musician now, ok good, it’s all good,” and I continued from there. You were in your teen when you started music. Was there any opposition to it, maybe from your parents or peers?

Yes, definitely. My dad wanted me to be a lawyer. And then he used to call me an orator. So, he felt that would be a good field for me because my father felt that I do good argument. But unfortunately like I said when the music came out and it was all over the place, I just said “ok bye, bye to law,” But I came back later to do an online course on law. But I was not focused because I was travelling all over the place taking my son around. So, I couldn’t really settle down and go through with it. But I did start the law programme just to please my father. But my father eventually died anyway.

You were known popularly during your reign as the ‘Samba Queen,’ How did that come about?

It was you people (the media) that gave me the name. I came out with a song called ‘Arigo Samba,’ and it was quite popular, people loved it and then from there the media just tagged me ‘Samba Queen,’ and that’s how the name came about.

Has there been any regret or event that gave you reason or cause to want to think otherwise taking up music? No, not at all. Like you said, I was in my teenage age when I started. And I tell you a lot of things happened to me in my teenage age. As a teenager, so many things happened to me that I didn’t expect. Like I went on a lot of tour; I went to Oraton world Festival of Arts in Berlin through University of Lagos Drama department. I travelled extensively. We went to Bourne, Sabricane, Frankfurt, West Berlin, it was an extensive tour. And then we went to Switzerland and then we went to Netherlands. It was a first eye opening break for me to know that a teenage girl like me could go and represent Nigeria. Though it was through a drama presentation, eventually after that tour another tour came up. Several other tours came up. We went to Yamoussoukro in Abidjan to represent University of Lagos (Unilag) at the All University Games; we went to sing the Nigerian national anthem; that was another eye opening tour. It was fantastic and then I came back and we went on another tour

to the Caribbean. Late Tony Momoh was leading the delegation with General Yakubu Gowon and his wife. Senator Chris Anyanwu was on that tour. It was something else and you know I was still young; I mean I was still in my 20s when that came up, we went to Caribbean from there they took us to New York. One of the ambassadors from Nigeria welcomed us in New York. The next day in Caribbean I was tagged “Bombshell from Nigeria”. It was a good thing because General Gowon was proud of me because I came and I had this line up of band behind me; all the henchmen like Phil Onyia was playing the horn for me; Peter King was on the saxophone; Lagbaja was on bass, late Willie Bestman was on drum; Remy Kabaka too was on drum a whole lot of them. All these big men were just behind a tiny me and we did so well in Caribbean because everybody came from all over the world. It was the 150th anniversary of slave trade in diaspora. I was the only band. I have done so much for Nigeria and everything happened in my early life. I tell you the truth, the reason I don’t really have many albums to my name was because national work kept falling on my laps. I was there at the 30th anniversary of corporate world in Abuja; I was on the band stand when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was formed; I was the one who played at the opening of the EFCC. Then I branched into human rights with late Gani Fawehinmi, late Enahoro, late Beko, Mrs. Odumakin, we were all always on the road doing all kinds of human rights thing; we did road shows, that part of my life too came up. Then I went to work for a

Foundation where we were serving food in school. So many things also distracted me from my career. But I know a lot of people don’t know all these things. While all my colleagues were enjoying fame, money and making money, I was busy working for Nigeria. That would have been an interesting experience, not something somebody can buy with money? Not, I didn’t make money from it but I enjoyed every minute of all those things that I did because it was for my country and I was really, really satisfied.

A lot of girls are now into music. How different was this during your time?

In our own time, I don’t think girls were even going into music right now. There are not many girls today. Like in our era a lot of girls came up - Uche Ibeto, Funmi Adams, Christy Essien, Onyeka Onwenu, Stella yama - name it. There were a lot of people in our era. And of course, you know the reason is different now. Today, it is always about beat and sex. In our own time, its content you know its serious content. You are either singing love songs or you are singing songs to correct the ills in the society. So, it’s a bit different from what they are doing now and not a lot of girls. Yes, of course people demand for sex from women when they want to do things for you. But in this era it’s even worse. They are not even allowing them to surface. You can see its only Yemi Alade, Simi and Tiwa that have only been able to bring their heads from the water. Okay, there is Ayra Starr, which I think is very talented. She’s going to go places. There’s also Teni. These girls are great talents, they are really, really talented. But the girls are not coming up enough. I don’t know but that’s how I feel.

What do you think can be done to encourage more girls to take to music?

We were lucky we had record companies that were rooted. You can just go to the record company. But in this case, have to go to individuals to produce who knows all kinds of harassment they will be getting. So, that could be part of it. And these girls are stronger than us in our era. When I mean stronger, they are able to put their foot down than when we were coming up. I’m not saying we were not tough too, we were tough. But this era, these girls are exposed, they are wise, they are strong and they are better placed. Some of them have done a lot for their lives before coming into music. I just hope that they get better and that they come up more. I hope the producers will help them come up more and don’t harass them so that they can be free to come up. I know we have a lot of talent. I just pray that things get better for the women.

At some point, some of your contemporaries stopped recording and left the scene. Some went abroad, some into oblivion. Why did that happen? It got to that point in Nigeria where the record companies started folding; EMI folded, sold it to a Nigerian company who didn’t really do well with it. Premier too went through the same thing; they folded when all the white people left these companies. And then don’t forget the pirates didn’t really help matters. Pirates really worried us in our time. It’s not like now that people live on corporate endorsement and streaming. We didn’t have social media in our time. So, it was difficult. The Alaba boys were just feeding on our works and we never got money back. And the record companies they use all their monies to promote and never got money back. And then don’t forget corruption aspect of it, we were not

Monye

Stella Monye: My Regret is Not Commercialising My Music

getting paid. There were just so many issues and the record companies became afraid of the Alaba people and that kind of killed the industry. And don’t forget that in our era we didn’t really make a lot of money. That’s the truth. I remember Onyeka Onwenu borrowed money to do ‘One Love’. And it took time for her to pay back that money. And ‘One Love’ was a mega hit! But people didn’t know what she was going through. So, we had those challenges unlike the children of today. They open their own record label and they all have studios in their houses. We didn’t have that kind of opportunity. So, people started travelling out, some just travel out and go and do something or become a nurse or something. Some got married and never looked at music again.

Going by what you just mentioned now how piracy affected the industry, and in a way affected your colleagues and made some of them to leave the industry. By recorded account, your debut album, ‘Mr. Right’ sold out. How much did it bring you in return?

I must say that I never earned a penny from that album. It was just a hit that I rode on. Like I said, when it came out, they started inviting me for government functions. I was able to do a lot of government functions. I was able to represent Nigeria outside the country. But earning, no I didn’t. By the time I got back and went to EMI Records, they said the book of account was lost (laughs). Can you imagine that? And that they couldn’t find the book of account. That’s how I lost out of that I never made a penny. They never paid me a penny royalty. But Tabansi Records eventually bought me from EMI. EMI said I owed them and that they are not the ones owing me. So, Tabansi had to pay EMI to take me over even though Tabansi didn’t do much for my career. When I got to Tabansi I did ‘Ife’, ‘Ife’ moved a little, ‘Arigo Samba’ moved a little, and then like I said, so many other things came up. I was distracted, I was just doing national work I was there at “Nigeria 99” I was part of the theme song, “Peace for Nigeria” I was part of the theme song. I just went into a lot of Nigerian thing.

How many other albums do you have and which of them comes close to the success of your debut?

It was ‘Ife’; ‘Ife’ was my second album and it moved. I mean a lot of people at least can point to that, and then ‘Kilode’ was another good song. They didn’t give me the kind of push that I expected. But like I said, it’s all too part of my fault I was not really focused anymore on my album I was just doing national work

and I was okay. I liked the live show so my band was always active even the One Lagos they do every year in December I’m on it. We were in Cross River for Calabar Carnival. We were just all over the place. Benson and Hedges Loud in Kano, Loud in Lagos, I was on band stand. So many other things that I went into that I didn’t really focus on albums. I was engaged on my daily lives than album.

If you could turn back the hands of time in terms of your career and some aspect of your life which you may recall, for what could that be?

I must tell you the truth I have no, no single regrets because the little fame that I got in Nigeria opened a lot of doors for me. I did a lot of national things. At least I can knock on any door now and they would say “okay you are Stella Monye, come in.” It’s joyful. We made a lot of mistakes along the line. Some things that we thought we could have done we didn’t do. And God sometimes uses our needs to

correct or to lead us to our destination. If my son didn’t have accident I’m sure by now, career wise I would be riding very high. Because just when I was thinking “okay, I didn’t do well when I started out, I had a lot of distraction, now I want to start my career,” then my son had an accident. And that was it. There’s no way I would have left my son to go and say I’m doing career because it was a very tragic accident that would have claimed his life, but fortunately I got help from here and there in Nigeria. I hope very soon we would be through with it by the grace of God. And I will start the phase two of my career (laughing).

What is your take about the music industry and the kind of music being churned out today, compared to what you had in your time?

Hmmm… sometimes it’s difficult to want to compare. Remember, music is evolving, things are changing. The era is changing. So we cannot

compare what we were doing to what they are doing now. Everybody doesn’t have to be doing human rights songs. Yes, they sing a lot about sex these days, they use life incident, daily incident, nobody is talking about human rights again, nobody. Like Fela, Okosun, and other people who really fought for freedom. Sometimes I really don’t expect kids to start fighting for freedom having known that their predecessors a whole lot of them suffered fighting for freedom. They jailed some, some died in the process. And then these children of nowadays, like I said they are exposed, they are wise, they have a lot of wisdom, they just want to come enjoy their lives play music they don’t want to go through that phase of going to jail like Fela whose house they even burnt down. These children don’t want to do that. They just want to entertain us. And then they want to say the things that they want to say to entertain us and the beat is there. This day it’s about beats. It’s okay we are enjoying it; it’s cool. People like 2face are still on the right track singing the right things, singing love songs, singing all the good things that you want to hear. They are all trying. They all can’t be singing human rights, no. It’s a trend. If a trend goes, other people will come and maybe those ones will choose another subject matter. The single I did in recent time is called ‘He was Preparing Me’. It’s an inspirational song that will inspire others. It’s about what I went through in my life; God was preparing me for greater seat in front of me because he has taught me a lot of things. I’m experienced now. I know a lot of things. I know that I cannot make the mistakes I made in the past and I know I will only sing inspirational songs these days. And please don’t condemn them. They have to come with something.

What advise do you have for this set of musicians and you have mentioned mistakes you made in the past can you share some of these mistakes so they can learn from it? You see they (present musicians) are more focused. Let me put it that way. We had a lot of work to do in our era. They are not really practicing politics like we did. I mean we joined politics at that time. We even campaigned for people and there was a lot of digression. I went into human rights I enjoyed it o! You know because I have always wanted to do human right work which the opportunity just came and fell on my laps and I enjoyed every road leading to that human rights.

Governor Otti, Benjamin Kalu: Masterclass in Bipartisan Cooperation

On the 28th of December, 2023, Abia State witnessed a beautiful moment when Governor Alex Otti rolled out the red carpet in a grand civic reception in honour of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

Otti is of the Labor Party while Kalu is of the All Progressives Congress.

The event, which was entirely bankrolled by the State Governor, saw the Deputy Speaker being received in a State Reception at the Ochendo International Conference Center and culminated in the conferment of the highest title in Abia State, ‘Enyi Abia’ on the Deputy Speaker.

By the next day being December 29th, 2024, the people of Bende Federal Constituency held a Homecoming Reception for their son and Representative, Kalu and Otti not only attended, but was the Chief Host at the event - going the extra mile to receive the avalanche of dignitaries that stormed Bende and lending invaluable support to the success of the event.

The Governor and the Deputy Speaker have since maintained a cordial, mutually respectful relationship to the admiration of all development-minded individuals and the consternation of agents of mischief, strife and division.

On Friday, May 3, 2024, Kalu was in Abia and the first place he visited was the Umuehim-Nvosi residence of the Governor where he pledged his continued support for Otti, despite belonging to different political parties, because “the Governor is working for the people of Abia State”.

In the words of Kalu: “You are working for the people of Abia State. We are seeing it. We will stand by you come rain, come shine. What are we looking for in leadership if not to impact lives? You are an accomplished man. You are not looking for a big name because you have earned it before coming into politics.”

“We are seeing the signs; that the steps you are taking will take us to the Promised Land. I have sat down to analyse your approach. Your approach is, do a general work for the people first before individuals,” Kalu affirmed.

He thanked Otti for the honour done to him last December, when the Governor hosted a homecoming reception to welcome him back into Abia, after he was elected Deputy Speaker by his colleagues in the Federal House.

Responding during the courtesy call, Otti expressed deep appreciation to the Deputy Speaker and attested to the

numerous support that he has received from him.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank him for all the support, and he has given so much support that has attracted a lot of projects. I believe that the last one was an Industrial Court in Aba. We have already found a location for it and very soon work will start,” Otti disclosed.

Another project the State is getting the backing of the Deputy Speaker is an airport, which according to the Governor is already provided for in the Federal budget as an airstrip. “An airport is in the works. I have had a discussion with him (Deputy Speaker) and with the Honourable Minister of Aviation, and we know that what differentiates an airstrip from an airport is the runway. Since the budget has made provision for an airstrip, we believe we can also make it an airport”. It was admirable seeing the two leaders display publicly, such level of camaraderie and obvious mutual respect which can only be a precursor to impactful developments in Abia State.

One is therefore left praying fervently to God against agents of mischief and division who may not be comfortable with the relationship between the duo.

Rumours had hitherto being flying about the assumed political aspirations of the Deputy Speaker and how such ambition is bound to pit him against the Governor but from the public display of bond between the two, they seem to be sending a message to fifth-columnists: get thee behind us. Leave us alone

to concentrate on the work we have been elected to do.

For too long, leaders have allowed personal and political schisms to derail their chances of working together for the good of their people. They have allowed gossip-mongers and crisisbeneficiaries to sow seeds of discord between them and create crises where none exists.

It is therefore imperative that Governor Alex Otti and Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu be commended for rising above partisan considerations and joining hands for the good of their State. It is to the benefit of Abia State that they pull resources together to develop the State. There is a lot a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives can attract to a State and if he is working with his State Governor for easy follow-through, it is the State that benefits at the end of the day.

Already, the fruits of these collaborations between the Deputy Speaker and the Governor are evident. Land is being allocated at rapid speed for the citing of Federal Government Projects in Abia State and the Deputy Speaker is encouraged to do even more for his State.

Kudos to these gentlemen who have decided to look beyond their partisan affiliations to work together for the good of the State. It is the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our sights.

How to Minimise Losses in Retail Business

The Nigerian retail boasts one of the most lucrative businesses in the country, contributing an estimated 10 to 15 per cent to the economy.

Despite its prospect however, operators are bedeviled by theft, often perpetrated by mischievous shoppers or internal employees. Cases also abound for misdemeanor like return fraud, administrative error, vendor fraud and unattributed loss, amongst others. This does not have to do with whether it is a physical or online store in as much there is human interface.

Many operators have been forced out of business for this reason, while some still roughing it are but counting their losses. This menace is however not peculiar to Nigeria. According to the National Retail Federation, retail shrinkage due to theft in the United States amounted to over $100 billion in 2023 and projected to grow year-over-year.

Multinational e-commerce company, Shopify reported that shoplifting and employee theft make up the bulk of a $61 billion annual problem for the retail industry.

Indeed, the impact of this threat is far -reaching beyond the obvious.

Honeywell Global Retail Marketing personnel, Tony Boncore, submitted that retail theft was not the overall shopping experience and trust between customers and retailers.

On his part, Global Retail expert, Andy Farley, put forward some proactive measures that operators, especially new-comers should embrace to eliminate and or minimise retail loss. They include the following:

Retail security guards are a must have.

It may seem self-explanatory and already be a routine, but it pays dividends to stay abreast of the latest developments in retail and technology, and how the two intersect as the society moves towards an increasingly high-tech future. Organisations Urged to Embrace Remote Work Culture

Business organisations have been urged to accept the new reality of remote working. This, they were enjoined to adjust their operations to align with the new trend. They were equally advised to direct investment to modern technology tools and build capacity of their workforce to be able to effectively maximise the new business model that was said to have effects on overall business goals.

Speaking at the virtual conference of the National Institute of Office Administrators and Information Managers (NIOAIM), recently, Head of Department of Business and Entrepreneurship Education, Kwara State University, Dr. Lawrence Ademiluyi, asserted that traditional office practices

were already outdated, noting that organisations averse to change would be left behind.

In particular, the don asserted that embracing digital operations had proven to simplify business management and administration, also at a friendly cost.

“Beyond cost efficiency, embracing remote work holds immense promise for unlocking new opportunities, while opening up new frontiers for innovation and collaboration.

“Leveraging the right tools like cloud based collaboration tools and platforms, employees can share, edit and work together on a project. This enhances teamwork, collaboration, efficiency, sense of importance, unity and common purposes among employees,” he said.

Identity Mgt. Crucial to Achieving Financial Inclusion, Experts Say

Proper capturing and management of Nigerians’ identity has been considered a viable step towards achieving 95 percent financial inclusion target before the end of 2024.

Speaking at the inaugural Nigeria Fintech and Financial Inclusion Roundtable in Lagos, recently, Managing Director of Human Manager Ltd, Adekunbi Ademiluyi, maintained that identity capture was a sine qua non for financial inclusion, noting that collaboration between banks and fintechs was necessary to deliver set target.

Quoting report by Enhancing Financial Innovation & Access (EFInA), Ademiluyi, expressed concern that with only 52 per cent of Nigerians owning bank accounts, the challenge of poverty was not subsiding soon.

He frowned at the unhealthy competition that existed between banks and fintechs, saying it was a drawback to financial inclusion goal.

“Before now, banks attempted to compete with fintechs, but they have since realised that collaboration is the way forward. By working together, fintechs can continue to reach out to individuals and facilitate account openings.

implemented across its stores was timely to curb malaria spread in the country.

Head of Modern Trade, Reckitt Nigeria, Gbenga Olotu, stated that the partnership was dedicated to enhancing public awareness on malaria prevention that was now a public health issue in the country.

Tosin Adarabioyo Premier League New Beautiful Bride

After a stellar season with Fulham and not ready to renew his contract with the Cottagers, four top Premier League sides have reportedly entered the scramble for the signature ofAnglo-Nigerian,Tosin Adarabioyo. With the future of four senior Manchester United central defenders now uncertain at the club,OldTrafford may probably be the destination of 26-year-old

Four top Premier League sidesNewcastle, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have all made inquiries about out-of-contract Fulham’s AngloNigerian defender, Tosin Adarabioyo ahead of the summer transfer window.

Despite money not readily available, Manchester United new owners, INEOS are looking to make a positive first impression and it’s a finely balanced situation that the Old Trafford club find themselves in.

As a result, Manchester United could look to utilise cheaper signings than they’re typically used to, as any outbound spending is largely dependent on selling players first.

Without wanting to delve too far behind their paywall, United are still weighing up a move to sign Adarabioyo.

The Fulham made has already been linked with a Manchester United move over the last few months, with the Manchester-born defender out of contract this summer. Adarabioyo is being eyed as a cheaper option due to the financial restraints that United find themselves under.

United could look to sign the 26-year-old on a free transfer, with Adarabioyo’s contract winding down to its conclusion during the upcoming summer transfer window. As things stand, all roads point to the centre-half leaving on a free.

Adarabioyo could be an extremely astute piece of business. He’s an excellent defender who’d definitely add some quality and consistency to a Red Devils backline that has majorly struggled for any sort of momentumbuilding form throughout the course of the campaign.

The issue for United however is that interest in Adarabioyo will be high due to the fact he’d come without a transfer fee.

The Manchester City academy graduate will end his four-year association with Fulham at the end of the season after turning down a new deal that would have made him one of the highest paid players at Craven Cottage.

Manchester United are in the market for a new central defender, with the futures of Raphaël Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf and Jonny Evans uncertain.

Both Varane and Evans are out of contract at the end of the season, while either Maguire or Lindelöf is expected to leave the club during the summer.

The newly appointed technical director of Manchester United, Jason Wilcox, is familiar with Tosin from their tenure together at Manchester City.

Tosin has made 24 appearances in all competitions this term, including 22 starts, and was on target on two occasions.

He is now surplus to requirements at the Cottagers, with manager Marco Silva omitting him from the matchday squad in back-to-back games against Crystal Palace and Brentford despite being in tiptop condition.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are understood to lead the race to sign the Fulham FC centre-back according to a report this Wednesday by Foot Mercato. The defender was touted last summer as a target for Ligue 1 side AS Monaco. The deal fell through and the outlet report that Les Monégasques are out of the race to sign Adarabioyo, whose status as a free agent in June has steered interest among Premier League outfits with Newcastle United leading the race to sign him.

Foot Mercato understands that positive talks occurred between the English centre-back and Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe. The outlet add that Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur were also interested in acquiring the services of Adarabioyo. However, the latter reportedly did not receive any guarantees from the Spurs regarding his game time. Besides, the lack of clarity surrounding the Blues’ sporting policy may have hampered Adarabioyo from making the short trip from Craven Cottage to Stamford Bridge.

Though, Chelsea have become renowned for their big spending under

Todd Boehly, yet the Blues are targeting a summer move for a free agent and the 26-year-old, who was once on the book of Manchester City, could be a wise signing for the Stamford Bridge club.

Adarabioyo is out of contract at Fulham after signing for the Premier League side in 2020 for a fee of just €1.65 million (£1.5m). He has since gone on to play 78 Premier League matches for the Cottagers and is now seen as a potential solution to Chelsea’s central defensive woes.

Romano reports for the Daily Briefing: “Newcastle are in the race for Tosin Adarabioyo, that’s for sure. Talks are taking place, he’s one of the names in their list for sure, though nothing is done or agreed yet.

“Chelsea also called to be informed on Adarabioyo a few weeks ago but there’s nothing advanced and no proposal from them at this stage. Still, the defender will be leaving Fulham as a free agent, so it’s not surprising to see interest from multiple clubs.”

“Adarabioyo would go straight into the Chelsea starting XI, according to SciSports, which rates the Manchester-

born player only behind Levi Colwill in this area of the field.

The analytics experts suggest that Adarabioyo is already a better player than the likes of Thiago Silva, who will leave Chelsea on a free transfer this summer, and Wesley Fofana, who has much to prove after another long-term injury.

The former England youth international joined Fulham from Manchester City, where he played under Jason Wilcox in the academy, for £2m in 2020. He played just a handful of first-team games for Pep Guardiola’s side and never featured in the Premier League but has blossomed in London. It however remains to be seen which of the Premier League sides that have made their intention known wins his heart.

The Mirror however believes his history of working with United’s technical director, Wilcox, when the pair were at Manchester City, could help them.

“Manchester United could be in pole position to sign Fulham ace Tosin Adarabioyo,” the paper was quoted as saying.

Arsenal Take Title Hunt to Old Trafford as Man Utd Crave Restoring Parity

Arsenal’s attempt at winning a first Premier League title in 20 years faces another test at OldTrafford tomorrow as they battle sleeping giants, Manchester United in an encounter any other result than a win for the Gunners may end their title aspirations. Mikel Arteta’s men are top of the table with a point advantage over second placed Manchester City, who have a game on hand but the North London side are very much aware that only a win at theTheater of Dreams can keep their title aspirations alive. Meanwhile, having been pummelled in their last match 4-0 by Crystal Palace, Erik ten Hag’s side knew they have to be at their best to get something against a sleekly Arsenal side. With pride to play for, it would never be a walk in the park for Arsenal

Sunday’s solitary Premier League offering sees a pair of English football powerhouses scrap it out at Old Trafford, as Manchester United welcome Arsenal to their crumbling fortress.

Erik ten Hag’s men are reeling from their embarrassing 4-0 thrashing at Crystal Palace on Monday night, while the Gunners eventually wore down the Bournemouth defences in a 3-0 win last weekend.

Just when Man United’s forgettable 2023-24 season could seemingly not reach a lower ebb, Crystal Palace completed

their first-ever league double over the Red Devils in astonishing fashion on Monday night, hitting Ten Hag’s disorganised troops for four without reply at Selhurst Park.

Michael Olise - allegedly a summer transfer target for Man United added a few more pounds to his value with a brilliant brace in the capital, while Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell also got in on the act to condemn the Red Devils to an 18th loss of the season in all competitions and their 13th in the Premier League, a new unwanted record.

Man United’s Champions League hopes had long since evaporated before being blown to Selhurst smithereens, and earning just one win from their last seven Premier League contests leaves the Red Devils outside of European contention completely as far as the standings are concerned, sitting in eighth spot but only behind Chelsea on goal difference.

Of course, Ten Hag’s charges could earn a golden ticket to the Europa League via the FA Cup glory route, with two weeks to go until a repeat of last year’s final with Manchester City, and stardom in the Wembley sunshine will likely be Ten Hag’s last saving grace before he vacates the hotseat to a new name this summer.

Shipping four goals to the Eagles on Monday night also took Man United’s conceded column for all tournaments this season to an alarming 81 - their worst tally since the 1976-77 term - although Arsenal will not be underestimating the Old Trafford factor; Ten Hag’s side have scored in

all of their Premier League home matches in 2024 so far.

On the flip side, the ball just would not go into the back of the Bournemouth net for Arsenal during their last Saturday lunchtime showdown against the Cherries, who produced more blocks than a beleaguered boxer at the Emirates until a controversial penalty decision went the Gunners’ way.

Bukayo Saka did what he does best from the 12-yard mark to settle any Arsenal nerves, before Declan Rice both set up Leandro Trossard and fired in a low strike of his own from a tight angle to ultimately ensure a straightforward Gunners success, albeit one where their visitors also had a goal questionably ruled out.

As Andoni Iraola was left to lament the contentious officiating calls, Mikel Arteta and co rejoiced in a fourth straight Premier League win, one which leaves them one point clear of Manchester City at the summit for now, but the champions can reclaim their rightful spot at the top by defeating Fulham today.

The Citizens’ game in hand means that not even perfection between now and the end of the season may be enough for Arsenal, but the Gunners head north having amassed 22 points from a possible 24 in Premier League away matches since the turn of the year, and a Theatre of Dreams triumph would see the visitors set a new club record for single-season Premier League wins with 27.

Arteta’s men produced one of their late

Former Serie A Top Scorer Hails Osimhen’s Aerial Prowess

Former Serie A top scorer, Guiseppe Savoldi has hailed reigning African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen for his aerial prowess which he has shown consistently over the years for Napoli.

The Super Eagles forward is known as one of the finest strikers in European football particularly in the past two seasons, finishing as Serie A top scorer in the last campaign.

One of the attributes that makes the 25-year-old a special player is his ability to score consistently with his head, having recorded five headed

goals across all competitions for Napoli this term.

He scored with another headed attempt against Udinese last weekend which excited a lot of fans and pundits including Savoldi who has revealed how impressed he has been with the Nigerian forward’s quality particularly his aerial prowess.

“Victor Osimhen scored a goal at Savoldi, in Udine?

Beyond his characteristics and comparisons, he is a sensational player, a driving force: if he is well and is on the day, he makes the difference,” Savoldi told Radio Marte via Area Napoli.

“The year last time he played alone. Stork-like legs that allow him to get everywhere... With his head, he’s really exceptional, but I felt where the ball would go and I was aiming to get ahead of the defender.”

Osimhen is hoping to finish the season strongly having been dealt a great blow with the poor form of Napoli and his injury worries. He has scored four goals in his last five Serie A games to take his tally to 15 for the season which is still miles off the 26 bagged in 2022-2023.

Everton Withdraw Points Deduction Appeal

Everton have withdrawn their appeal against a two-point deduction for breaching Premier League financial rules.

The Toffees were docked two points after an independent commission found the club had breached profit and sustainability rules (PSR) by £16.6m for the three-year period to 2022-23.

The appeal was due to take place next week with a verdict announced before the final game of the season at Arsenal on 19 May.

The Toffees had a 10-point deduction reduced to six on appeal in February for PSR

breaches in the three-year period to 2021-22. Successive home wins over Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brentford last month secured Everton’s Premier League safety.

In its written reasons for Everton’s most recent deduction, the independent commission said the Premier League’s starting point for any PSR sanction was a five-point deduction but conceded two should be taken off because of the overlap in the years that were assessed in the club’s two cases.

The commission decided that

any breach of PSR justifies a three-point deduction, with an additional two points because Everton’s breach of £16.6m - 15.8% above the £105m threshold - was deemed significant.

However, the commission accepted Everton’s arguments for mitigation in relation to the fact the club had already been deducted points this season, suffered a loss of revenue because of the suspension of a sponsorship deal with Russian company USM and made an early admission of guilt. This led to the sanction being reduced to two points.

Casemiro Dropped by Brazil for Copa America

Brazil have left Manchester United midfielder, Casemiro out of their squad for this summer’s Copa America.

The 32-year-old has endured a poor season and had a particularly tough night in Monday’s embarrassing defeat at Crystal Palace, which led to Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher believing “football has left him”.

The ex-Real Madrid man, who was named Brazil’s captain in March last year, is one of a number of Premier League players to miss out on the Copa America squad.

Nigeria to Debut in ISF World School Cross Country

A seven-man contingent will represent Nigeria at its maiden appearance at the International School Sport Federation (ISF) World School Cross Country Championships taking place in Nairobi, Kenya.

The team, made up of four boys and three girls, are champions from the Nigeria School Sport Federation’s (NSSF)-organised national crosscountry championships held in Kaduna in March. Winners in the U-12, U-15, and U-18 are expected to compete against their counterparts from 21 other nationals from May 10 to 14.

Speaking at the press briefing before the team’s departure in Lagos on Thursday, May 9, NSSF President, Olabisi Joseph, described the trip as part of the efforts by the federation to expose the students to global tournaments on a global stage.

She particularly commended the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, for supporting the students in their quest to compete on the big stage.

Being the first time Africa will be hosting the tournament, Joseph said Nigeria will be making its debut at the tournament with the hope of returning home with medals.

“For us at NSSF, this is another opportunity to showcase the talents of Nigerian students, as talents abound in our schools across the country. ISF has given our students the opportunity to showcase their talents on a global stage. This is the first time Nigeria will be part of the tournament, and we must commend the good people of Plateau, most especially, the sports loving governor, for ensuring that the dreams of the athletes become a reality with their participation

in the competition,” Joseph said.

For Plateau State Commissioner for Education, Mohammed Yalum, the NSSF must be commended for identifying the athletes through the national competition while promising that this would surely ignite the promotion of sports in school curricula across the state.

“We are happy that NSSF organised the national competition to be able to discover the athletes, and this again has shown their genuine interest in Nigerian students regardless of where they come from. We are happy that our athletes dominated the team, and we hope this can ignite interest in sports across all schools in Plateau. I hope and believe the athletes will make Plateau and Nigeria proud in Kenya, the commissioner, who is also the leader of the delegation, said.

Newly Promoted Premier League Teams Scout Nigeria Striker, Adebayo

Luton Town striker, Elijah Adebayo has caught the attention of Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, according to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT.

The 26-year-old’s impressive performance in his first Premier League season, scoring 10 goals in 25 games, has made him a sought-after player.

Adebayo’s journey to the top flight has been remarkable, from his humble beginnings in Fulham’s youth academy to becoming a household name

Real Madrid hold a long-term interest in the 25-year-old forward, who would have to take a pay cut to join the Spanish side, even though they are prepared to make him the highest-paid player in their history.

Fury won. Scott has revealed what Fury could look to use to his advantage in his clash against Usyk. “In terms of winner, I would go with Usyk but at the same time, Fury is big and knows how to use his size.

Reflecting on Flawed Nationhood

Exactly three years ago, last week, we published the fifth in a nine-part series of articles attempting to interrogate the causes and effects of our calamitous manhandling of our national development. It was broadly dubbed ‘Great Nation, Poor People’. No one individual, generation, sector or profession was spared…we were all part of the mountain of decay and decadence that we have wrung our country into.

Let us gingerly remind ourselves of what was, and what could have been; perhaps, we can submit ourselves to genuine introspection, capable of igniting a desire to “do something” about our inglorious situation. Here we go…: “In truth, we are so far away from where we hope to be, and too near to where we believe we should not be. The ongoing hoopla about the alleged sexual peccadillo of a Nigerian movie star concerning an underage girl - a torchlight for reprehensible social abominations that have, in the past five years, taken a more rapid frequency. This tragic narrative eloquently typifies the fifth element in lifting our people out of diverse manifestations of poverty, to promote and produce a great nation. Society.

Let us ask ourselves a few questions. And answer them with honesty at the tip of our tongues. What do we hold dear nowadays? Who do we celebrate in our society today? What do we justify? We cannot hide under the cool shade of “in our own days…”- it won’t cut. We are seeing the perfidy of today because of what our children saw in some of us, read about many of us, and watched as some of us struggled in the mud with greed and shamelessness.

What exactly do we hold dear as Nigerians? It is useless rhapsodising about a great period in this nation when every adult in the community was a disciplining parent to any wayward child, irrespective of tribe and tongue; when the scandalized ‘owner’ of the child would seek the surrogate out for thanksgiving - and a reassurance that remedial ‘works’ were ongoing. It is pointless luxuriating in the glow of the 60s and 70s when low fences were mainly to prevent

straying animals from disturbing your household; when there was no wrought iron behind your curtains to irritate burglars or robbers; when driving against the traffic flow (‘one-way’ we call it now) was unheard of, except in serious emergency.

Now is our problem. Now is what is letting us down, and showing us in discomforting probelights that our descent into total damnation is certain, unless we reverse and recapture our innate human essence. Today, we see and behold head-shaking spectacles, and we shrug in resignation - ‘children of nowadays’ is our national mantra of acquiescence. Young men and women in flashy cars drive around the neighbourhood, plunking money in the air for the next generation to scurry after, with seeds of future conquests and acquisitions sowed in their fragile minds. More often than not, the neighbours murmur against the spend-loose behind hooded curtains - ‘only God knows where they get their money from!’ Of course, that’s a lie. We know the ‘wherefrom’ - Yahoo-Yahoo, and other wire frauds. But their mothers pray for them - to be successful, to evade capture, and to prevent evil spirits and vengeful partners from disrupting their new prosperity. All the prayers are to the same God who abhors evil, cheating, ostentation and swindling.

When we justify villainy because others are doing it...or because governments have been irresponsible...or the country has gone to the dogs...and several other ‘reasons’… we inevitably pauperise our country, and besmear all as a people whose long history of academy, sophistication and high culture is now seen as merely a poorly sewn dress to cover a mind predisposed to crime and subversion of rules. That crime without punishment is locked deep in our DNA.

So for the roguery of a few, the entire nation is condemned into ignominy. Our hardworking, law-abiding citizens are dragged through the guillotines as possible fraud artists, drug barons, or mules - and indecently treated and filtered. For the sake of a few, we are all tarred when you engage in online transactions, and your currency and nationality suddenly became an irritable

an inflexion in corruptive American English! Unnecessary input?

“Unfortunately, however, I, and many other Nigerians, have been infuriated by our servants….” In pursuit of linguistic orderliness: many other Nigerians and I. The concept of the cart and the horse applies to language usage, too.

“One can only hope that these peoples’ representatives would realise that the electorate is (are) patiently waiting for another chance.”

“But all our future blessings would be achieved through waiting in the Lord.” If you are after God’s heart you wait on, not in, Him.

Wrong: pomp and pageantry; right: pomp and ceremony or pomp and circumstance or just pomp.

issue - a cause for caution. The picture of eating with the devil wielding a long spoon pops up - simply because your ‘compatriots’ had gone ahead of you to muddy the waters.

Our level of depravity is not synonymous with youth. The generation before them, in places of trust and responsibility, have also been involved with activities that suggest mental retardation, spiritual hocus-pocus, or some level of group mysticism. How do you steal from your company or business (even if you have the largest shares, or serve as the chairman) then pocket 90% of the loot, and go to church to give God 10% as tithe? The amazing part is the tendency that some people indeed believe that the penance of paying the tithe bestows on them a sense of restitution, a settled conscience. Laughable as it may sound, it is altogether possible that some righteous rogues actually believe that giving to God, or more appropriately, to the church (or the pastor) a portion from proceeds of their corruption, then all would be well.

When we find a scintilla of justification to contextualise the villainy of the tither, and the consuming ignorance of the church (some bordering on arrogance), then we add to the layers of foundations that pauperise our struggles for a virile, great nation under a righteous God who takes so much time and give so much rope in dispensing immediate righteous condemnation.

More soul-sapping were reports of some pastors who have allegedly taken possession of physical property (cars, buildings, other hardwares) that some harebrained worshippers willingly transfer to the church, in moments of ‘spiritual’ catharsis...but those property, in some cases, actually belong to the entire family who are completely ignorant of the generous giver’s beneficiary, nor of his mental or religious evolution. However, on being made aware of the wilful duplicity of the

‘righteous’ giver, the pastor plays the ostrich, or acts affronted! And these are the end-time bastion that would be relied upon to pull us back from the awesome pestilence of the devil and his infernal host, in the coming Armageddon. So, mentally, spiritually and governmentally, the Nigerian society is in a depressing cul-de-sac. Then, our ethnic and tribal relations are sorely tested. Nigerians are so divided, with obvious push from politicians and profiteers of irredentism that every act and statement are now filtered through frames of ethnicity, religion and tribal affiliations. It is grotesque when every kidnapping is surely by the Fulani herders; every fake product is likely by an Igbo trader; most, if not all, romance fraud, is, of course, by a Yoruba chap. Broken and brittle are words that now describe our national fabric which ought to be a one-size-fit-all coverlet for our more than 200 nationalities. The entreaty, ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ is trampled in these times.

We accept abnormal tendencies, and normalize deviants and pedophiles who have star-rights, not human rights. We indulge buffoons as political representatives because some hawk-eyed godfather has assumed power of omniscience to identify great works of God in one man or woman. We are no more shocked or incensed when ritualists kidnap and disgorge our children for money-making condiments. We are no longer troubled when kidnappers ask for and receive humongous ransoms, even from highly placed persons, and strategic functionaries - in a world where phone calls and electric messages can be traced to the tiniest end of the pin-point. We are now in a society that vilifies honest actions of upright individuals, and deodorizes the unfortunate excesses of dubious characters. We are sinking!” But has anything changed?

“There is none of his infrastructure that is affected. I agree that there are some people he sub-leased the place to, but the shoreline was never given to him by the Oniru family. These people he sublet to, he erected some caravans, makeshifts, so on and so forth within the shoreline. So, we are dealing with these people who sublet the shoreline illegally” – Minister of Works, Dave Umahi speaking with persons whose property were affected by the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project Umahi on Landmark

Begging? I Beg Your Pardon!

As the Igbo would say, the man who sets out to marry a wife and celebrate his wedding in the Village square while wearing stolen and brightly coloured clothes of another should pray that the owner of the apparel on his back does not turn up in the Village Square while he is rocking his new-found body gear of questionable origins. And this saying has an extension: He who prays that the owner of the stolen clothes he chose to wear to a public event should not attend the event and see him should remember that the village is a small place and that the original owner of the clothes has friends and relations who will carry home a report that would make the thief unable to sleep after close of the day’s business.

But the matter of whether Ohaneze was planning to embark on a begging expedition or not has been laid to rest for good. Just when it was beginning to look like a crescendo was about to be attained by drivers of the campaign of calumny, the project ran out of gas. Untruth may rear its head, and even display some bright colours you cannot ignore, but it can never last long enough to challenge the truth. The mischief makers who tried to float the totally reprehensible narrative lost out in the end. But there is still the after-smell of un-sanctity in the air. No matter.

In reaction to the shocking tale of beggary, the President-general of Ohaneze and the organization’s Secretary General rolled out the tanks of public discourse and drowned out the ridiculous, but viral, claim that the organization came up with the had the hare-brained idea going on some kind of begging expedition to the northern part of the country. To begin with, there was nothing remotely resembling that thought in the two-day Ohaneze retreat where the idea was alleged to have sprouted.

I was at the event. I was also the Lead Speaker at the retreat held in Enugu. My presentation, and other presentations, were focused on new paradigms for Igbo selfactualization in the nation that essentially undergirded by a conspiratorial, and not openly and freely competitive, political economy. It was a soul-searching and truth telling outing. The ensuing Communique spoke to the issues discussed, as well as the new programmes and focal concerns of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Worldwide. So where did the tale of begging and supplication come into it?

Ohaneze, and Ndigbo generally, had a chance to “beg” the North or, more specifically, the Fulani, for support about a year ago. That was before the Last presidential elections, when Peter Obi was a candidate. They did not such thing. Instead, a meeting was called some five months before the elections between the South East Elders Forum and the Northern Welders Forum. In attendance covered the confederacy of

all otherwise distinct platforms from both parts of the country, all with a common interest on the issues the coming elections were likely to put the table.

Prof Ango Abdullahi led the Northern team, while the South east team was led by Chief Simon Okeke, for Chairman of the Police service Commission (PSS) and Chairman of the Anambra Public Officers and Elders Forum (ASPOF). The atmosphere was sombre. The air was charged with barely concealed expectations of horse-trading proposals, since it was a question of an election wherein the highest position in the land was being sought by an Igbo man.

There was a smell of “What is in it for us” in the air. So, it was for the South East Elders Forum to “Make their case” and convince their counterparts that a Peter Obi Gamble was worth their while. The Northern Elder presented Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed as spokesman, while the South East Elders presented Prof Okey Ikechukwu, mni, as spokesman. And so, Ikechukwu was invited to address the Northern elders after the leaders of the two teams had put forth their opening pleasantries.

As one of the very highly respected and also very old Northern Elders later quipped, after the three-hour interaction and exchanges, “We did not see it coming at all. That your Ikechukwu just compelled some of us to thinks about things we probably have bever adverted my mind to in the politics of the momen”. So, what really happened?

As the designate spokesperson for our own side of the table, I started by saying that we had come with a central message; which is captured in the statement: “Come let us reason together”. I said the we had not come to beg them to vote for Mr. Peter Obi, or to ask them to support our son and brother, no. Instead, had come to compare

notes with them, on the good product that Nigeria needed a tthat historical hour.

I pointed out that Obi’s choice of their son and brother as running mate was based on his assessment of the latter, as enlightened, successful, and hands-on manager of human and material resources. Obi chose one of their best, who, in addition to being broadminded, was also known for his substantial, and sustained, investments in human capital development. So, let us reason together, with these questions in mind: (1) “What sort of leadership and navigational skills do we need to save Nigeria. (2) What type of person can deliver on this, and is Peter Obi, alongside his running mate, the type of team that dan do this job well?

Then came my clincher: “Gentlemen and elders, what every one of us here has in common is that we have all the attributes of people who can be kidnapped for ransom. are prime targets for kidnappers. That is not to say that we are wealthy by any stretch of the imagination in the conventional sense of Nigerians who can routinely sign off millions of naira, or eve n dollars, without blinking; no”!

I pointed out that we all came in more than passably clean air-conditioned vehicles; all in relatively good condition. We all look a little less harassed and less desperately hungry than the average person out there. So, anyone seeing us, and who has caught unto the new-fangle trade of capturing human beings in order to release them again after being paid, will see a potential product he can secure and use to make money”. Everywhere was dead quiet.

I continued: “No bandit, kidnapper or terrorist who accosts any of us on the road will first try to find out who we are, how good or bad we are and whether we are doing our best for humanity and for our fatherland. We would all be just, “ransom-able commodity” and nothing more. Professor, Imam, Senator, Senior military officer, students, name is!

Turning to the Prof Abdulahi, I said: “Recall, sir, that your son was one of the unfortunates of the Kaduna-bound train mishap. Fortunately, no stray bullet found him. But unfortunately, he was taken captive alongside everyone else they people could get hold of after derailing the train and killing some of the passengers. The young man’s identity as your son your son did not make any difference to them, or to anyone for that matter. No! with all the sacrifice you and many other people have made over the last 50 years?

I spoke if the demand for ransom and of the fact that the criminals held unto the young man until the full ransom was fully paid. Shortly thereafter, an incident involving the kidnap of another of your relations, this time with four of your beloved grand children in tow, was reported. It was all Ango Abdullahi’s problem while it lasted.

“The concern for us at the South East Elders Forum had more to do with a desperate need to rescue even our humanity as a

people, in addition to all the hullabaloo about elections and positions after the elections. The coming elections, we held, must be sued as a tool for the restoration of the people-centred leadership ideals that characterized the era of the Ahmadu Bellos, Ziks, Awolowos, and so many others of that era.

I reminded us of the circumstances under which Prof Onyemelukwe lost his life in Anambra State, at the age of 84. He was accosted on the road by armed young men. Then they discovered that he was a saboteur working with the Fulanis in Nigeria against Igbo interests. Yes! And they had clear evidence and proof of his treachery before their very eyes. They also told him about this evidence and proof before they shot him. Guess what proof of his treachery and betrayal of Ndigbo they had against him? The 84-year-old man was wearing a caftan. That was all. He had to be executed for wearing Fulani dress in Biafra Land. That was the end of a great scholar of international repute and community leader.

Traditional rulers hitherto thought to be untouchable in various parts of the country are now routinely picked off their royal stool in their kingdoms and emirates like hapless chickens I nan exposed cage. Alongside the foregoing several other issues that were discussed in confidence on both sides.

Baba Ahmed was at his eloquent, and also very realistic best when it was his turn to speak for his side of the table. He raised all the relevant issues, forever focusing on the things that mattered the most. There was neither begging nor demand for begging. The gathering did not query, or try to impugn, the reputation or aspirations of other candidates besides the ones we had on the table at our meeting.

Then the meeting rose, agreeing embark of serious group reflections and introspection, and to reconvene soon thereafter to determine next steps. It was about Nigeria, about or physical, economic, political and moral survival as a people facing common problems that we needed to “reason together” and chart a way forward.

Imagine if a man who, as Vice chancellor of Ahmadu Bello university, did so much to fast-track tertiary education for Northerners were to lose his son to criminals at whose current means of livelihood is the fact that they had no education and no socially useful survival skills. The north stood by and Ango’s son was held captive for months. Just as the East watched the husband of Dora Akunyili bumped off in broad daylight by gunmen.

Going back to the matter of whether Ohaneze was planning to beg anyone or not, ”Untruth may rear its head, and even display some bright colours you cannot ignore. But it can never last long enough to challenge and permanently displace the truth”. Begging? I beg your pardon!
