candidates in a two and half hour debate where he openly disagreed with the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Peter Obi on the issue of fuel subsidy. While Osinbajo justified the

necessity for retention of fuel subsidy or the pump price will peak at N220, Obi criticised government's retention of oil subsidy to the detriment of other sectors like health. Obi also faulted the All Progressive Congress (APC)-led

federal government approach to anti-graft war, saying while the government was busy fighting corruption, Nigerian Stock Market lost N2 trillion in one year. Obi made this disclosure in Abuja at the 2018 vice

2019 Elections: US Worries about Intimidation, Partisanship of Security Agents We are already seeing increased tension, polarisation as poll approaches Chineme Okafor in Abuja The United States has expressed concerns about intimidation and partisanship by security forces as Nigeria’s general election draws near.

A statement obtained by THISDAY in Abuja, yesterday, said the Assistant Secretary, Bureau of African Affairs at the U.S. Department of States, Tibor P. Nagy, Jr., stated this, among others, while testifying

on Thursday before the U.S. House of Representatives’ Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organisations. According to the statement, Nagy, Jr., whose testimony

before the committee was titled, “Nigeria at a Crossroads: The Upcoming Elections,” noted that heightened insecurity, terrorist attacks on elections institutions, or violence towards voters, observers, or electoral officials;

and inability of large numbers of internally displaced persons or persons with disabilities to vote were also sources of concern to the U.S. Additionally, it listed voter suppression, the use of armed

Obinna Chima in Lagos, Shola Oyeyipo, Adedayo Akinwale and James Emejo in Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja told the 36 state governors that the Nigerian economy was in bad shape and that Nigerians would need to tighten their belts. Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) cum Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, disclosed this to State House correspondents after the governors met with President Buhari in the Council Chambers of the presidential villa. The President’s alarm on the economy came on the day it emerged that the provisional estimates for Nigeria’s Balance of Payments (BOP) in the third

quarter of 2018, showed the overall BOP swinging into a deficit of US$4.542 billion, compared to surpluses of $503.97 million and $2.787 billion recorded in the preceding quarter and corresponding period of 2017, respectively. Also, report released yesterday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that the consumer price index (CPI), which measures inflation, increased to 11.28 per cent (year-on-year) in November compared to 11.26 percent in the preceding month.
