Presidency: New Forex Window Records $25bn Inflows in One Year Omololu Ogunmade in Abuja The Presidency yesterday released the record of its economic performance since 2015, stating that the new forex (FX) window introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in April, 2017, yielded an average of $1 billion turnover every week and $25

billion inflows in one year. According to a release by Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, the fact-sheet contained in a 41-page document showed that FX Window inflows culminated in a total turnover of $47.14 billion, which it said signalled a rising investors' confidence in Nigeria.

The release which said the 41-page document highlighted successes of the administration on economy, security and the fight against corruption, disclosed that $10 million was spent by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) in March 2018 for the establishment of a world-class Cancer Treatment

Centre at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). It also said another $5 million each was invested in the Aminu Kano University Teaching Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, to establish modern diagnostic centres. Disclosing that the diagnostic centres would be completed before

the end of the year, the release further said Nigeria’s economy was back on the path of growth after the recession of 2016-17 with 1.95 percent growth in the first quarter of 2018. It also said inflation had fallen from 18.7 percent in January 2017 to 12.5 percent in April 2018 while external reserve had doubled its

former size as of October, 2016 and capital importation standing at $6.3 billion. The release also said tax revenue rose to N1.17 trillion, representing 51 percent increase from the generation in the first quarter of 2017 while N2.7 trillion was spent Continued on page 6

mustered by the opposition, saying the power of incumbency at his disposal could not match the volume of alleged mischief from the opposition.

Buhari who made this remark while addressing members of the Buhari Media Organisation in the State House, said members of the opposition were firing from

different angles and the volume of resources at their disposal made him afraid. According to him, the consistency of the group had

been helpful in defending his government from the barrage of such mischief from the opposition, pointing out that such a degree of consistency and steadfastness from

US to Designate Nigeria ‘Country of Particular Concern’ over Killings Accuses FG of failing to hold perpetrators accountable

Bayo Akinloye Against the backdrop of incessant killings in Nigeria, particularly the predominantly Muslim herdsmen slaying Christian farmers, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has recommended to the US government that Nigeria should be designated as a “Country of Particular Concern�, CPC. This recommendation is contained in the latest report of the USCIRF titled, “2018 Annual Report–Key Findings and Recommendations,� obtained yesterday by THISDAY on the website of the US Department of State. While on Thursday, at a telephonic press conference on the latest report on religious freedom with Samuel Brownback, US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, in Washington, D.C., it was disclosed that plans were underway for the American envoy to visit Nigeria and later for religious leaders in the country and other African countries to be invited to the US

to discuss the issue of religious violence and freedom with the Donald Trump administration. Touching on prevailing violent conflicts having religious connotations in Nigeria, the report said: “Religious freedom conditions in Nigeria remained poor during the reporting period. The Nigerian government at the federal and state levels continued to repress the Shi’a Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), including holding IMN leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, without charge, imposing state-level bans on the group’s activities, and failing to hold accountable Nigerian Army officers who used excessive force against IMN members in December 2015. “Sectarian violence between predominately Muslim herders and predominately Christian farmers increased, and the Nigerian federal government failed to implement effective strategies to prevent or stop such violence or to hold perpetrators accountable.
