Thirsty Work editor, Lisa Machin. Talk to any union at the moment and they’ll tell you things aren’t peachy keen for everyone in the sector. This month our thoughts are with the workers of Peabody Energy and CQMS Razer as their share of the cash cow dries up. We are constantly hearing about the lucrative salaries of energy workers, and it seems like a dream too lofty to be shattered for those working in the industry. That is until their job gets the chop. Things are pretty tight for some companies, with the downturn in coal and heightened restrictions proving even the best funded projects can hit some speed bumps. Thirsty Work’s advice is to get to know your union, and take a good look at your contract. In other news, we are coming off the back of one of the most action packed weeks in Australia we’ve seen in some time. Many Origin fans would have been more than a little peeved to see the pre-game chat of Origin II replaced with live coverage from Canberra as Gillard and Rudd fought it out.....again. What a night. One former PM managed to remove the knife in his own back and return it to the back of the PM that knifed him in the first place. Oh Labor, get it together. While a lot can chance in the space of a few months, one thing is for sure Tony Abbott will have been watching the Labor infighting unfold with a look of total glee on his face. While Rudd may be polling with more encouraging election hopes than Gillard, many believe he still doesn’t stand a chance against the Coalition on September 14. Meanwhile, on the sideline, Australia seems to be growing tired of the two biggest kids in the toy room fighting, resulting in the sneaky climb of both Palmer’s United Party and Katter’s Australia Party.

➤ MARYBOROUGH JOBS GET THE CHOP

High & dry this July Razer has confirmed it will suspend employment for most of its Maryborough foundry workforce from July 1 to August 13. The company wouldn’t say how many would be affected, but the CFMEU suggested 50 to 60 staff would suffer. CQMS Razer chief executive officer David Haslett blamed a downturn in the mining market for the cuts, and said the company’s Adelaide manufacturing plant would also be closed. He said the closure of the Adelaide plant would benefit the Fraser Coast, with manufacturing operations to be moved to Maryborough within the next four months, creating up to 20 extra jobs. “The outlook for mining in Australia is still uncertain as the sector continues to focus on reducing costs,” Mr Haslett said. “The consolidation of our Adelaide facility into our Maryborough operations shall reduce our manufac-

Marathon construction effort brings Australia Pacific LNG to halfway

Lifting 1050 tonne with air

HALFWAY THERE: The second of two enormous LNG tanks on Curtis Island had its 1050 tonne lid lowered onto it, marking the halfway point of the four year construction. Photo Contributed

AFTERN AN eight hour marathon effort, Australia Pacific LNG has successfully placed their 1050 tonne roof on the second LNG storage tank. The placement of the roof marks the half-way point of project, which first began in June 2011. ConocoPhillips’ Downstream project manager Kent Anderson said putting the roof into place, was “not dissimilar to blowing up a camping air bed,” and was a significant milestone. “The complexity of the roof raise is in itself a construction feat, with 1050 tonnes of carnbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium materials life into place by low air volume created by fans,” Mr Anderson said. The five fans, which are nearly 80cm in diameter, built the volume to create enough pressure to lift the

roof from the ground to the top of the tank. The fans are so powerful that no cranes are required to lift the roof into place. Once the roof was lifted into place it was secured by a crew of welders and boilermakers. The LNG facility has also seen a number of huge developments over the past six months, including the completion of the material offloading facility, the arrival of the first modules and the commencement of work on both processing trains. Mr Anderson said the roof for the second tank was not far behind. “With the roof of the first tank now in place, we will look to raising the roof on the second tank in coming months, and progress the remaining works on both LNG storage tanks,” he said.

450 workers dumped to secure competitiveness PEABODY Energy will dump 450 contractors from its 11 coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales. The mining giant owns seven projects in Central Queensland, including Burton, Coppabella, Eaglefield, Middlemount, Millennium, Moorvale, North Goonyella

and Wilkie Creek west of Dalby. In a statement, the company said the cuts were in response to market conditions and an effort to lower costs. “Peabody Energy regrets the impact on the contractors directly affected and is conscious of the likely impacts on communities in

which we operate. “We are taking these steps to secure the long-term competitiveness of our operations.” Already this month, Xstrata cut 46 workers from its Ravensworth coal mine in NSW and Anglo American was preparing to shut down its Aquila underground mine in Central Queensland, with 80 workers affected. The Federal Government estimates 9000 jobs have now been lost throughout the Australian coal industry, with 6000 of those in Queensland since early 2012.

Guard up for healthy fight A favourite with all my clients, and particularly those working out as a group, is boxing. It is a fantastic cardio workout that gets you fit and strong. It shapes and sculpts your arms and shoulders. It also requires mental focus to perform the boxing combinations, so it is great for training your mind as well as your body. Another added bonus is the stress relief it can provide, as you punch and upper cut your way through the workout. Lastly, it helps to improve your reflexes. Boxing leaves you feeling breathless, energised and smiling! Boxing workouts can be organised into short rounds of intense exercise with

minimal rest in between rounds. This High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is great for getting your heart rate up and burning calories. When boxing moves are combined with strength moves, it makes for an even better and more holistic workout. Grab a partner or shadow box your way thought this workout. Repeat each combination 3 times: 45 seconds of work/ 15 seconds of rest 1. 10 jabs + 1 push up 2. 20 upper cuts + 10 squat jumps 3. 10 high punches + 1 burpee 4. 4 jabs + 1 tuck jump 5. Hold plank and al-

ternate hand punches 6. 2 jabs + run, back for 4 jabs + run, back for 6 jabs + run (Increase to 20 jabs and then backwards to 2 again.) Need variety? There are many, many boxing combinations you can do, so get creative and design your own. Simply combine jabs, upper cuts or hooks with a strength exercise. Work out the reps, set your interval timer and go for it. Good luck! ● For PT in Dalby email nikki@focuspt.com.au

A few tips to fit a consistent and balanced diet into your schedule THE HEALTH and wellbeing of the FIFO worker is always a hot topic. It’s easy to fall into bad habits when you are living and working away from home. Being offered a large selection of foods, as well as cheap drinks on site, can make it hard to be disciplined and health conscious. When bad habits are formed, it means we often go about our day without listening to what our bodies want or how they are feeling. If you notice that your weight is increasing, your energy levels are diminishing or you are just generally feeling ‘off’, you can make simple changes to your diet and lifestyle that will have an amazing effect. Below are some reminders of simple things you can do to start changing some of your habits.

1.Eat Breakfast- the most important meal of the day. Limit your BIG breaky to only 1-2 days per week and go for porridge or oats instead. They keep you fuller for longer, which means you are less likely to snack before lunch. 2. Snack on fruit or nuts- be prepared by taking a small zip lock bag with some nuts and a piece a fruit with you to prevent last minute vending machine purchases. Avoid cakes and biscuits. 3. Drink Water! Soft drinks and energy drinks are wasted calories so don’t bother with them! Have a water bottle with you all the time. If you do feel peckish before a meal, sometimes a drink of water can put off hunger for a little longer.

Or try herbal tea in the winter months. 4. Decide on your meal- don’t be tempted to have a little bit of everything. Make a decision about what you feel like and just have that. Have something different the next night to ensure variety and a good balance. 5. Limit portion sizes - stick to the 50:25:25 rule: 50% vegetables and salad, 25% protein, 25% breads, pasta and potato. 6. Limit alcohol. Have only a couple of drinks per sitting and try to have 2-3 alcohol free days a week. 7. Don’t have seconds Sit and wait for 10 minutes at least after your meal and let your dinner settle. You usually find that you are not

hungry any more and are less likely to go for more food. Try these simple changes and see how much better you start you

start to feel. For the winning combination, add in at least 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 times a week.

ZORBING WHOEVER invented the working week ration of five days of hard slog versus two days off should be locked up. Yes the weekends are far and few between, and if you’re doing shift work it’s a whole different ball game. So next time you have some time off, don’t let the days slink by you as you sit on the couch. Get up. Get out there. Why not strap yourself in a giant, clear ball and roll down a hill? Also known as sphering, orbing or globe-riding, the first zorb site was of course constructed across the creek by our mad kiwi neighbours. Since then the sport has gathered momentum, with sites popping up all over the world to cater to this weird and wonderful market. Zorb Park on the gold Coast is one such location. Zorbs are generally a double layer of flexible plastic, with the inside ball acting as a shock absorber. While they were designed for ‘gentle slopes’, they also go quite well when flying off the end of a ramp

(sfety considered!). There are two types; harnessed and unharnessed, with the unharnessed allowing for up to three people to share the quirky zorb experience inside one big ball. They also go well on flat ground, with the person inside using their weight to roll in the desired direction. A zorb was used by song gods The Flaming Lips in one of their famously good live shows at Splendour in the Grass. Lead singer Wayne Coyne emerged from a giant vagina on stage, inside a zorb, before rolling across a delighted crowd while hundreds of coloured balls rained down from above. In next month’s Thirsty Work keep an eye out as we profile another weird and wonderful reason to get yourself off the couch and into the great world of adventure sports. ● Zorb Park on the GC is at 232 Old Pacific Highway, Pimpama ● Zorb balls are made of PVC and around 3.5m in diameter. ● Some zorbs have water in them to add to the fun.

Clean eating craze takes off in camps

Eeasternwell reports success from healthy eating campaign EASTERNWELL will now be serving up a new healthy eating plan for workers in their camps. The camp has overhauled the camp menus, aiming to increase vegetable consumption and decrease red meat consumption. The change is part of the camp’s employee Healthy Lifestyle program. Camp management general manager Marco Waanders said many workers in the camp were keen to shift towards a healthy diet. “Workers on camps and rigs encounter many barriers to

up by five and 10%. Camp occupants have quickly adapted to their cleaner living diet. Worker Terry Sanders said he had noticed a difference since Easternwell introduced

their healthy eating campaign. “It can get pretty tough to stay motivated to eat well when you’re out on roster,” Mr Sanders said. “When I go to fill up my dinner plate, there are so many

delicious yet healthy options to choose from now.” The program was developed in conjunction with RHealth Limited, and aims to help workers reduce their sugar intake and increase water intake.

Worker Terry Sanders

It can get pretty tough to stay motivated to eat well when you’re out on roster choosing health options,” M r Waanders said. “Being away from home and the family support network can sometimes result in a lack of motivation to eat well. “We have been working hard to not only dish up healthier food options by provide the knowledge and encouragement about how to live a healthier life.” The past six months have already seen a drastic change in eating habits, with vegetable consumption increasing by 10% and red meat has decrease by 10%. Workers are now satiating their appetites leaner meats, with seafood consumption and chicken consumption shooting

See you later Kelly Slater Champ chipped off the podium

VETERAN surfer Kelly Slater has been overtaken as world number one by Joel Parkinson after an action packed Oakley Pro in Bali. Slater was sitting well heading into the event, having carved it up in Fiji at the Volcom Pro to win convincingly. INSIDE: BEEF RATATOUILLE ON THE BARBECUE, STICKY PORK BELLY AND MEXICAN RICE

Winter cocktail to warm you Something a little different for Easy Eating readers this week as we hand our feature page over to one of Australia’s leading bartenders. Adam Bastow from Black Coffee Lyrics on the Gold Coast tells us how to make a special winter warmer.

ADAM BASTOW adam_benjamin_@hotmail.com IT’S becoming more and more obvious that winter is well on its way. The nights are getting colder, the mornings are getting fresher and our noses are red. You’ve retrieved your favourite coat from its archive, found artefacts from last year still in your pockets and the smells in the air are bringing it all back. But what does winter mean for the world of cocktails? For me it means one thing. Brandy. Brandy is one of my favourite spirits so I get very excited at this time of year.

COCKTAIL KING: Adam Bastow creating another winning blend. It’s soft, warming and very nostalgic. Vanilla, tobacco and mahogany on the nose with a smooth taste of dried fruits, nuts and rich oak. Being such a complex and flavoursome spirit I don’t like to tamper with it too much, but one drink I’m really looking forward to serving over the winter is my own twist on a brandy blazer.

The 25th Blazer (Recipe by Adam Bastow) 40ml Brandy 10ml Salamandre Chataignes (Chestnut liqueur) 10ml Grand Marnier 1 small tsp of raw sugar Dash of Aromatic bitters Splash of over proof rum The drink is made by lighting the ingredients on fire and passing the mixture between two silver cups, add a sprinkle of

ground cinnamon before extinguishing and served still hot, in a brandy balloon with some dried currents, a nice orange twist and a single clove. This drink will warm the soul and wrap you up nicely to brave the cold. Tips for at home: Add a splash of brandy to your hot chocolate with a tiny pinch of salt and a sprinkle of grated nutmeg. You can even drop some hazelnuts in there as a crunchy treat after you’ve drank it.

OUT&ABOUT

Surat Basin Mining and Energy Expo

THIS year’s Surat Basin Expo generated $6million for the regional economy. The two-day event at the Toowoomba Showgrounds attracted more than 500 exhibitors from across the state. Australian Events director Bob Carroll they had exhibitors from around Australia and from overseas attending this year and around 7000 visitors. “The event has been hailed as an enormous success by all areas of industry,” Mr Carroll said. He said they’d had tremendous feedback from international exhibitors and it was a reflection of what was happening in the Surat Basin. “Local councils and the Surat Basin Enterprise have been overwhelmed with investment enquiries,” he said. Thirsty Work was there to catch all the action and check out the displays.

Life Memories are accurately preserved thanks to the speed of modern cameras

Catch the moment Mark Furler THERE’S nothing worse than taking a photograph of your kids and missing the moment. The time he scores his first goal at soccer, or the time she punches the air after winning her first big swim. Let’s face it some point-andshoot cameras are hopeless when it comes to speed. You push the button down and your child has already left the frame before the picture is taken. That’s where the Nikon 1 J2 and J3 compact cameras come in. They offer super quick speeds of up to 60 frames a second and the ability to shoot still images and video where you can capture water droplets in the air, a candle going out on a cake or the dog mid-air as he leaps for a treat. We took the J2 for a spin, along with the Nikon S9500. They are two very different cameras with distinct advantages – and disadvantages. The S9500 features a 22x optical zoom which takes it from the wide-angle 25mm format to an impressive super-telephoto 550mm lens. The Nikon 1 J2 30mm to 70mm lens is better for landscapes and portraits, but no good for taking a shot across a soccer field.

We spent more time checking out the S9500 because of its versatility. Small enough to put in your pocket, it’s the camera you would pack on any overseas trip, knowing it has enough zoom to capture

something between a decent point and shoot and a full blown DSLR. The camera’s creative mode includes panorama, selective colour, miniature, soft, night landscape, backlighting and night portraits. Spend some time playing around with these settings, in different environments, and you can come up with some really different photos. You can also use the normal manual exposure controls (P, S, A,M) similar to those found on far more expensive cameras. Given their specifications, both cameras offer amazing bang for buck.

The wi-fi allows you to send images and movies to smart devices (phone or iPad) and social media sites via the wireless mobile utility app. We took photos everywhere from capturing the water flowing across rocks on the beach in low light before sunrise to a Guy Sebastian concert at night. Brash big Yank performance VITAL STATISTICS

Stuff the greenies, Vani Naidoo finds plenty to love about this sporty wagon

■■■ ▼

OU know there is a good car parked in the garage when you send the other half on a manufactured mission to find the three-year-old’s favourite stuffed toy, knowing full well it is languishing at the bottom of your bag, just so you can quickly ensconce yourself in the driver’s seat. You know there is a good car in the garage when you hide the keys and feign ignorance, when you deliberately forget to buy the milk just so that you can go out to the shops again and when you happily make space for reversing vehicles during the school car park shuffle for once caring not a hoot that you are late. You know there is a good car in the garage when your husband offers to do the after-school activities drop rather than play golf, when he

Model: Jeep Cherokee SRT8. Details: Five-door four-wheel drive performance SUV. Transmission: Five-speed automatic Engine: 6.4-litre petrol V8 generating maximum power of 344kW @ 6000rpm and peak torque of 624Nm @ 2900-6000rpm. Consumption: 14.1 litres/100km (combined average). And so went our week with Jeep’s flagship Grand Cherokee SRT8, a week of clandestine activity and very nice surprises.

Comfort

Chrysler Jeep’s forced union with Italian schmoozers Fiat as a result of the crushing effects of the Global Financial Crisis has been good for the Grand Cherokee with the interior of the SRT8 presenting a standard of quality and sophistication which has eluded the American product until now. There is soft stitched nappa leather wherever you look – on the

seats, door trim even the dash. Carbon fibre accents work well to highlight standout features but also help create an aura of quiet elegance in lieu of that American brashness. The steering is chunky and nicely weighted with the controls most used close to hand. The surrounds of the instrument binnacle and sat-nav system were a disappointment, their cheap plasticky feel spoiling what is essentially an air of exclusivity. Seats are generous and comfortable with the back pew benefiting from the “supersize me” mantra which is so

prevalent stateside. The boot, too, is properly proportioned with depth and height eclipsing competitors.

On the road

The SRT8 may seem big and bulky but boy can it move. Only the slightest urging is needed for the 6.4-litre V8 to take flight powering from standstill to 100km in five seconds. It has a great turning circle, is nimble on crowded roads and demonstrates a penchant to run when the way is clear. Steering can sometimes be a bit loose but cornering ability, especially for a

vehicle of this bulk, is spot-on with the Grand Cherokee using its wide berth and weight to plant itself firmly. Some 90% of the torque is available between 2900rpm-6000rpm for improved straight-line performance. You have the option of five modes – Auto, Sport, Tow and Snow to cover most weather conditions and terrains or Track (if you really want to show off) with the dampening tightening to deliver more performance-driven rides. There are paddles to manually work your way through the gears but we found both their position and

WHAT MATTERS MOST

What we liked: Overall package, power and good looks. What we’d like to see: Better fuel consumption and availability. Warranty and servicing: The Grand Cherokee is backed by a three year/100,000km warranty with service intervals at 12 months/10,000km.

THE LOWDOWN

This is an SUV that is surprisingly impressive delivering a top-notch all-round performance at half the price of its competitors. An updated version with an eight-speed transmission, a new seven-slot grill design and a larger more interactive touch-screen infotainment system is expected to make an appearance sometime late next year and may be worth the wait. The race will be on though – Australia usually receives only a small number of Jeep Cherokees which tend to be snapped up even before their arrival. ★★★★ underwhelming negotiation of the gearboxes slightly irritating. You are best served leaving the SRT8 on auto and allowing it to impress. The Grand Cherokee’s off-road performance is somewhat hampered by the low clearance but it remains steady and composed on trails which are moderately challenging.

What do you get?

The inclusions list reads like a celebrity package and has been extended to feature heated steering wheel and seats, nine-speaker stereo system with 40GB hard drive, powered tailgate, radar-assisted cruise control, uConnect navigation

system and command centre with Bluetooth connectivity, LED daytime running lights, push-button start and keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers and blind spot monitoring. The safety package is equally jaw-dropping boasting advanced multi-stage airbags, anti-lock braking system with rough-road detection as well as brake assist, rain brake support, electronic stability control, forward collision warning and reverse camera with parking sensors.

Other options

The Fiat Chrysler Group who makes

the Jeep is certainly not one to be lost in modesty and says they are looking at the Mercedes Benz ML 63 AMG ($179,400), the BMW X5 M ($183,700) and Porsche Cayenne Turbo (from $222,000) as the SRT8’s main competitors.

Practicality

The SRT8 is a great way to pair a performance-driven SUV with the needs of a family and present it in a package that will appear affordable to the general population. The five-speed transmission borrowed from Mercedes is a bit

dated despite its ability to handle the wide torque range and its eight-speed replacement reputed to be propping up next year’s updated model will be a welcome addition. The SRT8 also sports a performance page in its trip computer which allows you to time yourself in 0-100km sprint and braking tests while displaying the lateral and longitudinal G-forces. It is a feature that has little real benefit other than being a big boy’s toy but does rank highly on the cool scale.

Running costs

Greenies block your ears and shut

your eyes because the SRT8 is a thirsty chap and proud of it. That throaty treble comes at a price and although manufacturers quote figures of 14.1 litres/100km, ours was not far off 18 litres/100km which may be an acceptable penance for taste of the SUV’s treasures.

Funky factor

We like the chunky blunt edges and box nose of the Grand Cherokee SRT8. It makes a welcome change from most other SUVs on the market who all seem to be cut from the same cloth and also accentuates its power and performance.

Couples just clicked IN 1995, newspapers started reporting the first weddings of couples who, they revealed with breathless amazement, “Actually Met On The Internet!” It seemed freakish then. No sly glance across a crowded room, no awkward conversation steered round to that coy invitation for a first date. No setting eyes on someone before you asked them out. Instead, an online profile and maybe an email. Today, partnerships made on the internet are not only commonplace, but fast becoming the standard way you meet your future spouse. The latest figures show nearly six million Britons are using internet dating sites, an increase of 22% over the year before. Not all of them are honest. Many internet daters report people who lie about their weight, height, drinking or smoking. And a 2005 University of Chicago study of 23,000 users of dating sites found 75% of men claimed “above-average looks” – not a percentage many women would corroborate. And then there are the serial philanderers prowling online dating sites, like the Gloucestershire management consultant who was finally confronted in a pub by the four women he’d been stringing along. Or the woman who wrote to The Sun’s agony aunt in 2002: “I started talking to a man of 37 who I met online. He was married but unhappily. I visited him three months ago and we knew immediately it was love. We agreed he would divorce and I would move to the US. Back home I signed the house over to my ex and quit my job. But now my lover tells me his divorce proceedings have not even started yet …” But a University of Chicago study found those who met their spouse online reported higher marital satisfaction than those who did not (and, incidentally, those meeting offline at school, church, or social occasions had higher levels of satisfaction than those who met their partner through work, family, bar, club or blind date). It’s likely that, soon, the majority of people will be meeting their future spouse online. The only wonder is that eBay isn’t offering people a chance to bid on pre-loved partners. – INDEPENDENT

Judge dodges charges for marijuana

JENNIFER Aniston has built a chicken coop in her Bel Air mansion. The Friends actress has reportedly poured more than $6 million into re modelling the lavish Los Angeles home she bought for herself and fiance Justin Theroux last year, and it seems the couple will move in a few feathered friends as Jennifer has installed a lavish hen house on the grounds. According to planning permission files, the chicken coop boasts a “luxurious wooden deck”.

JOEL Madden hopes he “didn’t cause too much drama” after marijuana was found in his hotel room in Sydney on Sunday. The Good Charlotte rocker, who has children Harlow, 5, and Sparrow, 3, with his wife Nicole Richie, is grateful to police in Sydney for not pressing charges after he was kicked out of his hotel when a housekeeper uncovered a small amount of the drug in his room and reported it to law

enforcement. The 34-year-old singer, who is serving as a judge on Australia’s version of The Voice, issued a statement on his Tumblr site, writing: “The police were called and responded. PRINCE Harry has reportedly been flirting with Cara Delevingne. The royal is said to have enjoyed the young model’s company while attending a barbecue thrown at his cousin Princess Beatrice’s home recently and “spent the whole afternoon” playfully chatting with her. A source told LOOK magazine: “Harry made a beeline for Cara as soon as he spotted her. Everywhere you looked there were models, actors and aristocrats but Harry and Cara didn’t seem to notice.”

MUMFORD & Sons’ Ted Dwane has a blood clot on his brain. The 28-year-old bassist was hospitalised and a scan revealed he will have to undergo emergency surgery. A message posted on the band’s official website said: “Ted has been feeling unwell for a few days, and yesterday he was taken to a hospital to receive emergency treatment. “Ted is receiving excellent care and we are being assured that he will recover quickly.”

➤ DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD YOU INVITE TO DINNER?

➤ BAD ADVICE

Q&A with Bill Sankey

1. Name and position Bill Sankey - Group Manager, Business Development at Easternwell 2. How long have you worked for Easternwell? Four and a half years 3. What is the most challenging aspect of your job? Understanding and evaluating different client needs can be a challenge but it can also be very rewarding. You’ve got to have a natural orientation towards service provision to do well in business development. 4. What is the most rewarding? Having recently become more involved in marketing activities due to our Marketing Manager being on extended leave, it has been very rewarding being involved in some of the more ‘front end’ activities such as the Australian Petroleum Producers and Explorers Association’s national conference. Also, some of the internal communications activities such as the Global Corporate Challenge have been great fun so far. It’s been fantastic to see how the staff at Easternwell has been so eager to participate in our corporate giving programs such as the

Global Corporate Challenge. 5. Where are you from? I’m from the Darling Downs (born in Dalby) and have been back on the Downs in Toowoomba for the last 20 years. It’s been great to be involved with the burgeoning gas sector as it has led to significant economic benefits for the region and will continue to do so for many years to come. 6. Where do you now work and was it work that brought you to the area? Work mainly in Toowoomba, but as many of our clients are based in Brisbane I tend to spend a fair bit of time there too.

Bill Sankey - Group Manager, Business Development at Easternwell Photo Contributed

7. Run us through what an average day is for you. I don’t think there is an average day really! It does depend a little on whether or not we’re in the middle of a major client proposal such as a tender process. During these periods I spend a lot of time liaising across the organisation in preparing our submission, talking to our technical people, health, safety and environment, HR and finance and legal teams. It can be pretty intense as we get near to the due date, but it is very rewarding especially if we end up securing a contract. This then means we will employ and train more people who will hopefully have very successful and rewarding careers with Easternwell. 8. What is the most important thing you have learnt in your career so far? Success is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration 9. What do you think is the future of the energy sector? The future of the energy sector is very bright. It is a very interesting stage of our history as we move to a more carbon restrained world while at the same time more of the world is

demanding the quality of life western countries have enjoyed for generations. Much of that requires energy and the gas sector in particular is likely to play an important role. 10. What is one thing people don’t realise about mining/ energy workers? They are extremely generous. Most people talk about the high salaries in the resources sector, but I’ve been taken aback by the generosity of people and their enthusiasm for charitable events/activities. Easternwell, the company and it’s people, has contributed significantly to programs such as the Global Corporate Challenge and Movember. 11. What do you do for fun? Exercise, reading, cooking. Even though I’m a fair way from retirement, I’m also working on an extensive ‘bucket list’! 12. If you could have three people over for dinner and a beer who would they be? (Dead or alive) Billy Connolly (for the entertainment), Jamie Oliver (for the cooking) and whoever is the CEO of Penfolds (for a copious supply of Grange Hermitage).

When should I see a doctor for my pain? Yahoo! Answers user "Sky" asks: “I have a sharp pain between my right hip bone and my belly button. I looked on some websites and I have a couple of symptoms like constipation. The pain gets worse, then dies down a little then get worse again. The pain I’d say is a 5 out of 10. Please help me. Here goes: if you think you may have a ruptured/ septic appendix, and you have pain in your abdomen, don't ask Yahoo!, SEE A DOCTOR! Attacks on PM ugly, rude

Gillard deserves respect as human being AFTER this week, it makes me wonder why anyone would even dream of going into politics. Especially women. The headlines all week have screamed two things: sexism and misogyny. What an embarrassing look for Australia. The Prime Minister of this country, no matter who they are, should be held up to task and accountable for many things. Disagree with them if you do, but question their partner’s sexuality and make fun of their genitalia? It’s absolutely sickening. I’m not Julia Gillard’s biggest fan, however, I certainly don’t despise her. But I can’t help but feel sorry for her personally after the lack of respect shown this week. The whole “menu-gate” saga was shocking. No matter who came up

with it, whether it was a mock-up or not, it’s disgusting. That person needs serious mental help if that’s what they consider funny. Then, we had Howard Sattler open his mouth. How he could ask that question of anyone is beyond me. A person’s sexuality is their business and their business only. These are two completely

disgusting and despicable ways to treat a woman, let alone the Prime Minister. Yet apparently, to some of us, it’s totally okay. I’ve read plenty of comments online in the wake of Sattler’s interview. One person said Ms Gillard was terrible in the role and deserved “everything she gets”. What a disgusting view. This is our Prime Minister and more importantly a human being. Regardless of who might be occupying the office, they should be shown some respect. This week has achieved nothing but to highlight Australia’s immaturity and feelings for our first female Prime Minister. You can disagree with her policies and her party, but she is our country’s political leader. Respect is indeed earned,

don’t lower yourself to what we’ve seen this past week. It’s just ugly. Have some respect.

STARS: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper, William Fichtner. DIRECTOR: Gore Verbinski. REVIEWER’S LAST WORD: Director Gore Verbinski confidently helms this action-packed, but family friendly big-screen remake of the classic TV western.

Star Profile ■■■ ▼

Johnny Depp Most famous for: 21 Jump Street, Edward Scissorhands, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Quirky fact: He fronted a series of garage bands including The Kids, which once opened for Iggy Pop. Notable quote: “I don’t pretend to be captain weird. I just do what I do.”

SEANNA CRONIN

ORE THAN six decades after he rode triumphantly on to the small screen, The Lone Ranger is about to be introduced to a new generation. The masked ex-Texas ranger, played by Clayton Moore in the original 1949 TV series, is getting a major reboot from the team behind Disney’s hugely successful

It’s hard to feel like a sissy sitting on a white horse with two guns Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. For anyone born in this century, the new film will put pop culture catch phrases like “Hi-Ho, Silver, away” and “Ke-mo sah-bee” into context. Starring in his first true Hollywood lead role is The Social Network star Armie Hammer, who plays hero John Reid opposite Johnny Depp as Native American warrior Tonto. “It was daunting in the beginning a little bit,” Hammer told APN. “It’s such a big part in so many people’s childhoods. I wanted to do the best job possible.” Standing at 196cm tall and sitting astride a large white horse, Hammer certainly looks the part. “It’s hard to feel like a sissy sitting on a white horse with two guns,” he laughed. And Hammer was certainly no sissy when it came to stunts. Disney recently released a clip online showing the actor performing a dangerous stunt atop a “spirit platform”, a rickety wooden structure standing more than 600 metres above the ground.

Using a helicopter, the scene was filmed with Hammer unharnessed and without the use of a green screen. “To be able to see the character’s face when all these things are happening, to see the look of surprise and sense of shock, it’s a really great part of the movie,” he said. “It felt real and that always carries over to the screen.” Hammer bonded with his co-stars, Depp in particular, during a cowboy camp ahead of filming. Depp is also one of the film’s executive producers. “They intentionally kept us together a lot,” he said. “We knew chemistry was such a big part of what can make this work. It could make it or break it. “He’s an amazing dude. I was constantly seeing new sides of him. He was so game to do anything. They would say ‘Johnny on this one we’re going to hook you up to this thing and swing you around’ and he’d be super open and

receptive.” The movie was filmed on location in the deserts of Utah and New Mexico with anamorphic lenses to give it the feel of an old Western. “If by some odd chance nothing else in this movie works, then at least it’s going to look so beautiful,” Hammer said. With American TV guru Jerry Bruckheimer serving as a producer, the chance of “nothing else” working in The Lone Ranger is highly unlikely. The Lone Ranger opens nationally on July 4.

Charter a vessel with a group of mates for some spectacular fishing

Chase some high sea tail mates. The Queensland coastline is dotted with prime spots for chartered fishing. As a result, the amount of businesses operating is great Some particularly popular locations include Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Port Douglas. Price is what you ultimately have to be wary of. A crew on your charter will undoubtedly raise the cost of its hire. Hiring prices are usually worked out per day, and start at around $500 for smaller yachts, with a maximum of four to six people. From here, the prices can shoot up to $10,000 a day for the luxury vessels –

SPORT ➤ STATE OF ORIGIN - MAROONS

Maroons chase eight straight dream

Queensland’s dream of eight consecutive State of Origin series wins is still alive after a drama-packed 26-6 win over New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium last night. The victory gives the Maroons the chance to emulate the results from 2006 and 2008 when the Blues took game one at home, but lost the series 2-1. Anyone who wondered whether the league’s crackdown on throwing punches would extend to the Origin cauldron had that question answered in the second half when the game was reduced to 11-a-side with four players given 10 minutes each in the sin bin. Blues pair Greg Bird and Trent Merrin were despatched for throwing punches, which is now a complete no-no, and Queenslanders Justin Hodges and Brent Tate also had some time out for their involvement. NSW paid the highest penalty, however, with star Maroons centre Greg Inglis making the most of a depleted defensive line to score his 15th Origin try and extened

The victory had been orchestrated by a brilliant first half from Queensland. Just as New South Wales had set up its win in Origin I on the back of a dominant start, this time it was Queensland who made the early running, jumping out to a 14-0 lead after just 17 minutes. Playmakers Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk all started with much more purpose, consistently challenging the Blues line. Thurston made it 8-0 after another penalty, before a third penalty for a late tackle on the Queensland fiveeighth resulted in Corey Parker being held up over the line. Thaiday was a constant

Queensland’s second try

came in the 17th minute when Blues debutant Nathan Merritt paid the price for being too eager to shut down Maroons danger man Greg Inglis, rushing up in defence and allowing Thurston to find Merritt’s opposite

number Darius Boyd clear in the corner. In a carbon copy of the second try in the first half, Thurston again made Merritt pay for trying to shut down Inglis instead of concentrating on his own man. That

allowed Boyd to slide over in the corner in the 48th minute to set up what was a matchwinning lead. NSW coach Laurie Daley will clearly need to make some changes ahead of the decider.

Card happy refs in Origin

BY EXPELLING four players from the field in Origin II, the referees may have acted impetuously, but they still delivered an affirmative message. No longer will the game allow punch ups. Brent Tate was the real victim. On any given weekend in the NRL, dozens of players would be guilty of removing a loitering opponent from a tackled player in the same fashion, so he was unfairly treated. But the other three were chiefly responsible for what could have become ugly. Trent Merrin threw punches and Justin Hodges and Greg Bird flew in to the gathering mob like crows to a carcass. That it did not escalate is a positive outcome of the warning last week that a punch now means an automatic 10 minutes in the sin bin. After further review of

the incident the authorities responsible would more than likely agree that Merrin was the only player truly deserving of dismissal. Those critical of the trigger-happy referees are saying the fans love the biff, and even Maroons coach Mal Meninga suggested fans be polled for their opinion. And Blues skipper Paul Gallen says fighting has been part of rugby league for more than a century, so should remain. But while existing fans are important, those administering our game need to be acutely cognisant of the future. We should not kid ourselves that soccer and AFL in particular are making inroads into traditional rugby league heartlands, and the opinions and attitudes of the mums and dads of today’s kids will define the evolution

of the game. And as much as I despise the word melee, which the AFL fraternity prefers to use when a group of players come together to vent their spleen, it is a much more accurate depiction of the incident from Origin II than brawl, which all and sundry trotted out. As Mick Dundee would say, that was not a brawl.

Sad, but true

WITHOUT being too unfair, we witnessed graphically on Wednesday night why past NSW coaches have been loath to select Nathan Merritt for State of Origin. For an age, Merritt supporters have been decrying the non-selection of this try-scoring machine, and while coach after coach has said he was close, none ever picked him. Laurie Daley was the one who finally took

the gamble, and it backfired big time. His shocker is just another reason Blake Ferguson should hang his head in shame.

Soured Jamie

JAMIE Soward has left Australia for the London Broncos, and his departure has scored barely a headline. Compare that to the support another Dragon, Josh Dugan, has attracted over the past 10 days and convince me it is fair. Apart from the odd brickbat concerning his perceived

lack of intent when running the footy, Soward has hardly attracted a negative headline in his 162-game NRL career, in which he scored 1003 points and won a premiership in 2010. He also made three Origin appearances. The split between Soward and the Dragons was, we are told, amicable. The coach was conspicuous by his silence when Soward was axed, then allowed to leave, yet has been sycophantic where Dugan is concerned.

To say he had no issues with Dugan’s boozy antics last week when his injured ankle was supposed to be encased in a moon boot flies in the face of the club’s strict rehabilitation guidelines. Soward, a model athlete, would never have dreamt of such amateurism. But then Dugan has helped win two vital games for the Dragons since his arrival, results that have more than likely saved the job of the coach. And as we all understand, winning is everything.
