Pathway to Excellence Pathway to Excellence is a guide to help students of all ages understand the recommended progression from beginning-level to more advanced-level music and dance study and achievement. The goal of the Pathway to Excellence is to provide an opportunity for all students to achieve their full potential in a nurturing and supportive environment. The School is equally committed to students who desire music or dance solely as an enrichment activity, as well as those who seek to pursue music or dance as a professional career. A General Overview of Course Types EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC INSTRUCTION Begin your child’s musical journey at a young age in Third Street’s Early Childhood Music Program, which encourages the development of social, rhythmic, emotional, creative and academic skills. Research has shown that there is a window of time in a young child’s life during which the capacity to achieve musical competence and excellence is greatly enhanced if the child is exposed to an enriched musical environment. Students can apply the skills they acquire to all areas of their early childhood learning, especially building a strong foundation for future music and dance activities. Third Street is home to Third Street Preschool, a preschool built around children’s natural love of learning. Entering Third Street Preschool, young children step into a world of music: meeting musicians, attending concerts and enjoying a rich music and movement curriculum. Students are also engaged in experiences such as painting, sand play, block building and dramatic play. Learn more at www.thirdstreetmusicschool.org. BEGINNER GROUP CLASSES Beginner group classes are an effective way to start learning a new instrument in an exciting and supportive environment. Classes are small, usually three to six students, and include 45 minutes of instruction. INDIVIDUAL & PARTNER LESSONS Individual instruction (one teacher with one student) and partner lessons (one teacher with two students at a time) provide the opportunity for concentrated work and individual attention. Individual lessons promote skills, achievement and enthusiasm, and are recommended for all students who wish to move along Third Street’s pathway to musical excellence. Beginner students have the option to register for beginner group or partner instruction before taking individual lessons. Both are offered in 30- and 45-minute increments, with 60-minute sessions also available for individual lessons. Partner lessons are an excellent precursor to individual lessons. About Traditional and Suzuki Instruction Methods Traditional Method Instruction (for all instruments and voice) There are many methods for teaching music. The most effective teachers bring the best of what they have learned through their own training and experience and develop an approach that enables them to respond to the needs of each individual student. In general, the traditional approach to music study integrates note reading and playing, with a customized repertoire based on the student’s needs and interests. The traditional approach is best suited to adults and children over the age of five who have already begun to read words. Parent/guardian participation in a child’s lesson, though desirable, is optional with the traditional method of instruction. Suzuki Method Instruction (piano, violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute) The Suzuki Method of instruction, which is as much a life philosophy as it is a method, was developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in Japan after the end of World War II. Dr. Suzuki believed that all children are innately musical, that they can excel musically and that a “beautiful heart,” sensitivity and discipline can be achieved through hearing and playing music when started early in life. The Suzuki Method is most effective when started with very young children.

Here are some hallmarks of the Suzuki Method:

­n The method is based on the way children learn their native language—by listening and imitating. Pieces are learned by ear (without reading music) and played from memory. Note reading is incorporated later on in the child’s training, when the child is beginning to read words.

­n Parent, teacher and child are all active participants in the learning process. Parents must be willing to learn the instruction method and make a commitment to attend lessons, group classes and performances. Parents are also required to participate in at-home practice.

­n The curriculum uses a common repertoire which is organized by books of advancing levels, starting with Book 1. The common repertoire enables students to play with each other and creates an international community of Suzuki learners.

­n In addition to individual, partner or group lessons, young Suzuki students are required to attend a weekly repertoire class. The purpose of this class is to review and reinforce pieces learned in lessons while developing musicality and ensemble playing skills, often using games to highlight important technical points and encourage music reading. Repertoire classes also promote development of musical rapport among students.

Early Childhood Music, Movement & Dance Start your child’s musical pathway with programs that bring music to life. Third Street children discover the joy of responding with their whole selves to instruments, song, dance and movement. Taught by talented early childhood specialists, classes are lively and engaging. These are foundational experiences that enrich children’s future learning, both creative and intellectual. As children’s love of music grows, so do they! This is music to grow up on. All Movement and ballet classes include a piano accompanist. MOVEMENT FOR TOTS Ages 18 months to 4 years with an adult Run and run and run and stop… Gallop, tiptoe, spin and drop… Inspired by their teacher, by the music, and by their own imaginations, children discover how much their bodies can do and say. They contrast body positions and experiment with speed and tempo in an active, playful environment. MUSIC & MOVEMENT Ages 18 months to 3 with an adult Children respond to music by moving, singing and experimenting with rhythmic instruments. They explore fine and gross motor skills, such as twisting, jumping, striking a cymbal or balancing with a hoop. Music & Movement opens doors to creative expression while building children’s confidence, independence and focus. The perfect starter class to share with your child! MUSIC MAKERS Ages 1 to 4 with an adult Singing, rocking, bouncing and clapping… children enjoy every step on the road to music literacy! Music Makers introduces young

children to the joys of music through rhyming, echoes, lullabies and imaginative play. This is a joyful and natural way for parents and caregivers to share musical experiences with their children. n Toddler Music Makers Ages 1 to 3 with an adult Toddlers experiment with simple percussion instruments, listening for beats, rhythms and sounds, and responding with their voices and whole bodies. n Preschool Music Makers Ages 3 to 4 With percussive instruments, scarves and hoops, children explore music in greater depth. Everyone is a musician as they create their own melodic patterns, echo shifts in tempo and volume, and build new skills with percussive instruments.

LAURIE BERKNER’S THE MUSIC IN ME Goldfish 12 to 24 months with an adult Dinosaurs 2 to 4 years with an adult Best-selling, award-winning children’s recording artist Laurie Berkner partners with Third Street for a very special series of music classes. Laurie Berkner’s The Music in Me captures the natural musicality in every child and opens the door to playfulness, joy and the organic quality of making music. All teachers are personally trained by Laurie Berkner.

COURSES OF STUDY Play flute Ages 4 to 5 with an adult The flute is a beautiful instrument. Its tone sparkles and shines. It is light and easy to carry. Children love learning to play using the Suzuki approach, based on the way we learn language. This small group class is a perfect introduction to the world of instruments. Parent participation makes flute a family experience.

PRE-BALLET Ages 2 to 5 This introductory class engages young children in the basics of movement and ballet. Spatial awareness, body alignment and musicality underscore the rich imaginative experiences that delight young dancers. Includes a family demo-day. HIPPITY-HOP Ages 3 to 5 High energy Hippity-Hop is a lively, musical introduction to rhythmic movement and dance. Boys and girls master basic moves and short routines in a class that is active and fun. Includes a family demo-day.

Beginner Group Classes for Children Ages 5 to 14 – Instrumental Ages 5 to 18 – Chorus and Dance Beginner group classes are an effective way to start learning an instrument, a dance or to sing in an exciting and supportive environment. Instrumental group classes are small, usually three to six students of similar age, and include 45 minutes of instruction. Days and times of beginner group classes vary by instrument.

Piano The Piano Department welcomes students of all ages and levels for individual lessons, partner lessons and beginner group classes. Placement: New students age five and under, or students with prior playing experience, will have the opportunity to meet with the Department Chairperson. INDIVIDUAL/PARTNER INSTRUCTION Individual (often called “private”) lessons provide personalized attention that enables students to progress at their own pace, improve their skills and learn repertoire that is most suited to their particular interests and needs. Partner lessons are lessons with two students and one instructor and can provide a fun and lower-cost option for many students. BEGINNER GROUP CLASSES Beginner group classes are an effective way to start learning a new instrument in a fun and engaging environment. Classes are small, usually three to six students, and include 45 minutes of instruction. Days and times of beginner group classes vary by instrument. Please contact Student Support Services for the most updated schedule or visit the School’s website at www.thirdstreetmusicschool.org. Group Option for Traditional Piano Students The School recommends that all school-age piano students who are enrolled in Traditional Method individual lessons take at least one group class each week, such as Music Theory, Composition, Piano Ensemble or Jazz Ensemble. When combined with Traditional Method individual lessons, these group classes are reduced-fee. Please see page 9 for a description of the Traditional Method.

Suzuki Repertoire Classes For students learning to play the piano through the Suzuki Method, a weekly Suzuki Repertoire (“Rep”) Class is required. Each level of piano Rep Class has one weekday and one Saturday option, and students must participate weekly. Students will be assigned to a Rep Class by the Department Chairperson based on level and teacher recommendation. Please see page 9 for a description of the Suzuki Method.

PIANO DEPARTMENT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS The Eda M c farlane Clark Piano Certificate Program The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate Program is designed for motivated piano students who are committed to achieving their full potential. This program is open to both Suzuki and Traditional Method piano students. Third Street has adapted the curriculum of the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program for The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate Program. Like the Music Develop­ ment Program, the Piano Certificate Program provides a fair and challenging assessment tool that measures achievement and is deliberately broader in scope, as Third Street wishes to encourage students to include such important musical pursuits as Chamber Music and concerto performance in their course of study. The requirements are similar enough that students can participate in either or both programs as desired from year to year. The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate Program is free to all students enrolled in piano instruction at Third Street. Students are evaluated on repertoire, sight-reading and technique as part of a

COURSES OF STUDY year-long program of study that includes concert attendance and performance. Upon completion of the 10 graded levels of The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate Program, each student will have completed a high quality, comprehensive piano and general music education. This program also includes many opportunities for public performance, personal growth and musical development. PIANO ENSEMBLE PROGRAM The Piano Ensemble Program provides a fun and enriching experience for pianists and an opportunity to discover the joy of making music with others. The Piano Ensemble Program enhances each student’s piano skills and leads to more rapid development. Students are grouped by level and age, with group membership ranging from two to four. Enrollment in the Piano Ensemble Program is limited to students who have at least one year of instruction. Students are placed in ensembles by the Piano Department Chairperson. Piano Ensemble classes are scheduled according to the availability of students and coaches. PIANO IMPROVISATION Instruction in piano improvisation is offered to all interested students with at least one year of piano instruction. Improvisation builds confidence and freedom at the keyboard, and further develops musical creativity. BARBARA E. FIELD CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM Piano students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Barbara E. Field Chamber Music Program, which is open by audition to students participating in the Piano Certificate Program.

JAZZ PIANO ENSEMBLE PROGRAM Instruction in jazz piano is offered to all interested students with at least one year of piano instruction. Jazz piano students are also encouraged to enroll in Jazz Theory & Composition, or one of the School’s jazz ensembles. MUSIC THEORY & COMPOSITION See pages 24-25 for more information. LARGE & SMALL ENSEMBLES Students, with recommendation by their teacher and the Piano Department Chairperson, are encouraged to play in one of the School’s ensembles. Music, Jazz, Rock, Orchestral Percussion THE MUSIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TM The Music Development Program is initiated by the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada) in an effort to establish a standardized course of music study throughout the United States. Periodic, non-competitive assessments (examinations) are a core component and help to measure each student’s progress. Third Street is a Founding School and Assessment Center for the Music Development Program. PIANO DEPARTMENT SPECIAL EVENTS PIANO OLYMPICS The Piano Olympics are a fun way for students to strengthen skills and gain a sense of accomplishment. It is especially helpful to students of The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano


C O U R S E S O F S T U D Y 15 Certificate Program because Piano Olympics events include the program’s required scales, chords and arpeggios. Students are divided into teams by skill level and age, and compete for their adopted “countries” with prizes given to all participants. The emphasis is on participation, preparation and team spirit. The Piano Olympics concludes with an international reception. This program is free to all students enrolled in piano instruction.

PIANO MONSTER CONCERT A Piano Monster Concert is for large piano ensembles of up to 16 players who play with a conductor. Piano students of all ages and levels are invited to perform in the Monster Concert on the last Saturday Music Hour in June. Students may sign up for a piece at their sight-reading level.

Strings The String Department welcomes students of all ages and levels in violin, viola, cello and string bass. All instruction for school-aged students employs the Suzuki Method, requiring all students to take one individual/partner lesson and one Suzuki Repertoire (“Rep”) Class each week. Beginner Group Instruction is available for viola, cello and string bass. Students are assigned to a Rep Class by the Department Chairperson based on level and teacher recommendation. Many string faculty members incorporate their own teaching styles and methods into this Suzuki program, including the Mark O’Connor Method, to meet the individual needs and interests of students. String students participating in the program must be available for Saturday Rep Classes. Beginner violin rep classes are scheduled primarily on Fridays. FIELD CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM String students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Barbara E. Field Chamber Music Program, which is open to all students by audition. Woodwinds, Brass & Percussion Third Street offers individual, partner and beginner group classes for students of all ages and levels on most woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, including: n Woodwinds: flute, recorder, oboe,

Students pursuing studies on woodwind and brass instruments should be at least eight years old, with the exception of flute and recorder students who may begin as early as age five. Percussion students may begin as early as age five. percussion ensemble: Come join the fun in Percussion Ensemble! In this group class, students will learn to: “groove” and improvise together on congas, “rock out” on snare drums and bass drums as a Drumline, and play beautiful melodies on the vibraphone and marimba. It’s recommended that interested students be about 9 years old and have one or two years prior musical experience. This is a great ensemble class to add to your child’s schedule if they are already enrolled in private lessons on any instrument. Drum circle: Is your child interested in playing drums? The Drum Circle is the perfect place to start. Drum Circle is a group class for younger students, approximately 6 to 8 years old, who are interested in playing the drums. In this class, students will be introduced to rhythm with the conga drums and will build toward playing drums with sticks and Orff Xylophones as the year goes on. No prior musical experience is required!

COURSES OF STUDY THE MUSIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TM The Music Development Program is an effort initiated by the Royal Conservatory of Music to establish a standardized course of music study throughout the United States. See page 14 for a full description of this program.

Band Ensembles give students the opportunity to create music with peers of the same or greater levels of ability. Through this process, students elevate their performance skills in an environment that fosters teamwork, fun and music making. Each ensemble prepares students for advancement and growth through each of the subsequent Third Street ensembles.

Placement New students or students with prior playing experience will have the opportunity to audition for the Department Chairperson. PRELUDE BAND Ages 8 to 11 Prelude Band provides a strong foundation in fundamental music concepts for young musicians. This ensemble focuses on popular and traditional works for young bands. Students should be enrolled in individual/ partner lessons or beginner group lessons and possess basic skills, including the ability to read music.


P R E S C H O O L E R S 19 CONCERT BAND Ages 8 to 14 Concert Band consists of woodwinds, brass and percussion students at an intermediate level. The ensemble will focus on original works for wind ensemble as well as transcriptions of popular tunes and jazz selections. Students will develop musical expression, technical accuracy and ensemble skills. Interschool orchestras symphonic BAND Ages 12 to 19 The InterSchool Orchestras (ISO) Symphonic Band, in residence at Third Street Music School Settlement, is a partnership between the ISO and Third Street. Third Street’s Wind Symphony (formerly the School’s most advanced band) was replaced by the ISO Symphonic Band beginning in 2012. The ISO Symphonic Band explores the world of band literature from classic to contemporary. Students not enrolled in individual or partner instruction at Third Street, please contact ISO at isorch.org, or call 212-410-0370 for fees and to schedule an audition. Students discover and learn basic jazz concepts, including performance techniques, improvisation, ear training and basic music theory. Students should be enrolled in individual or group instruction, or have at least two years of experience in playing their instrument.

JAZZ BIG BAND Ages 12 to 18 Jazz Big Band studies big band compositions and arrangements in a variety of styles, including: swing, blues, bebop, ballads, funk, rock and Latin. Members of the ensemble work to develop proficiency in jazz phrasing and advanced improvisation techniques.

Jazz Jazz is America’s music and New York City is the jazz capital of the world. Originating in the United States around the beginning of the 20th century, Jazz encompasses many different styles, from swing to blues to ragtime to bebop. Study Jazz at Third Street, the nation’s oldest community music school! To participate in the Jazz Program, students must have completed at least one year of instruction on their instrument. JAZZ COMBOS Jazz combos are small ensembles that study and perform music from early jazz to today’s modern composers, as well as original compositions. Students learn jazz improvisation, style and music theory concepts in a small informal setting. Enrollment in Third Street Jazz Theory is recommended (see below). JAZZ BAND PREP & JAZZ BIG BAND See page 19 for more information. JAZZ theory & improvisation One key element common to almost all jazz styles is improvisation. A strong base in jazz theory, performance and improvisation can also provide an excellent background for popular styles of music. The School offers an introduction to Jazz Theory, which complements participation in band and jazz programs. Students who are participating in Jazz Combos, Jazz Band Prep or Jazz Big Band are encouraged to enroll in Jazz Theory & Improvisation. In this hands-on class, students learn jazz theory and improvisation techniques and have the opportunity to study using their own instrument. Guitar Third Street’s Guitar Department offers individual, partner and beginner group classes in many styles for students of all ages and levels. Classes are available in the following styles: Classical Guitar, Blues, Flamenco, Folk, Jazz and Rock. Placement: New students age five and under, or students with prior playing experience, will have the opportunity to meet with the Guitar Department Chairperson. ACOUSTIC GUITAR FOR CHILDREN Ages 5 to 8 Using size-appropriate classical guitars and methods geared toward young beginners, this course teaches the basic skills and techniques required to play all guitar styles. Students are encouraged to perform in Guitar Music Hours (informal recitals), Department Recitals and concerts throughout the year. Thirty-minute partner lessons are recommended for young beginners. classical guitar Classical guitar instruction incorporates traditional methods of right- and left-hand development, including scales, arpeggios, studies, note reading and varied repertoire by Carulli, Sor, Tárrega and Villa-Lobos. Intermediate to advanced classical guitar students are encouraged to audition for one of Third Street’s classical guitar ensembles or chamber music groups. electric guitar and electric bass Instruction in electric guitar and bass guitar reflects the diversity of modern popular guitar styles. Voice and Chorus Singing is fundamental for musicians and Third Street encourages all students to enroll in individual voice lessons and chorus. Vocal training helps students to build skills in ear training, musicianship and performance. The School offers individual and partner lessons for students above the age of eight, and chorus for students five through 18. Singers can pursue instruction in many styles, including classical or contemporary (rock, popular, Broadway and jazz). Above all, Third Street places an emphasis on healthy singing and vocal technique.

Center for Music Theory & Composition Third Street’s Center for Music Theory & Composition provides a complete course of study for music theory and composition. Courses are open to Third Street students and others throughout the New York City region. Here is some important enrollment information:

­n Students enrolled in composition or who are studying instruments or voice at Third Street can take theory at a discounted rate.

­n All instrumental and voice students learn and improve their note-reading skills while taking music theory. Students apply these skills in their group classes, ensembles and lessons.

­n The Center welcomes students who are at least seven years old through adults of all ages.

­n Students who have studied one year or more of an instrument/voice may enroll in a music theory class. n Classes are offered six days per week with

ten levels of instruction to meet the needs of every student. n Students successfully completing Third

Street’s theory courses are prepared to pass official Royal Conservatory exams through the Music Development Program. It is anticipated that in later levels students successfully completing the curriculum could pass AP Music Theory and college theory entrance exams.

Placement: n For returning students, placement is

determined by successfully passing the appropriate theory exam given at the end of the previous year. n For new students, placement exams are

offered before registration begins and can be taken until registration closes in the fall.

MUSIC COMPOSITION Ages 8 and up Third Street’s music composition programs teach students to create original music. Students explore both contemporary and classical styles, creating original compositions that are presented in several performances throughout the school year. In addition to traditional composition methods, a fully-equipped technology lab with Mac computers helps students learn to compose using cutting-edge, user-friendly software applications like Sibelius, GarageBand and Logic. The courses are taught in a workshop environment that emphasizes group participation and shared learning, while allowing for significant individual instruction. Each class is limited to eight students. The prerequisite for composition is a minimum of one year of music study and one year of music theory. Students must read notes fluently. A theory class is included in the tuition for all composition classes and is required. Tuition also includes a performance and a recording of the student’s work.

BEGINNING COMPOSITION, COMPOSITION, & ADVANCED COMPOSITION workshop Beginning students learn the basics of software notation as well as strategies in music composition to compose short pieces for several instruments. CHAMBER MUSIC Chamber music is written for small ensembles and said to be the “music of friends,� whether played at home or at a world-renowned concert hall. Chamber music spans many eras, genres and forms. It requires the development of both musical and social skills, as each instrument has its own part that gives voice to a musical conversation. Whether amateur or professional, being able to collaborate

with other musicians is a vital skill that is honed through chamber music. In chamber music, students learn to communicate and develop close relationships through music, to give expression to a vast, wide-ranging body of repertoire, and to make music for the enjoyment of the musician, ensemble and audience. Please talk to your Department Chairperson and schedule an audition with the Programs department.

Performance at Third Street With more than 250 recitals, concerts and events by students, faculty and guest artists each year, performance is an extremely important part of Third Street’s musical life. Public performances help students set and achieve goals, and experience other aspects of music and dance at Third Street as well as professional performances by faculty and guest artists. The School strongly encourages students to perform as often as possible. Performance opportunities at Third Street include: n Music Hours: Music Hours are student

recitals led by each Department Chairperson. Music Hours provide an opportunity for students to try out new pieces, polish old ones and prepare for upcoming recitals and concerts in a relaxed, informal, supportive and nurturing environment. Students are expected to attend Music Hours to perform, as well as learn how to become good audience members. Music Hours take place on Saturday afternoons for both string and piano students; on Monday evenings for woodwind, brass and percussion students; and at varying days and times for the guitar department and voice department. Please note that participation in Music Hours and other public performances may be a requirement for certain merit-based­ scholarships.

presents his/her students in an annual recital, usually during the second half of the school year. n D epartment R ecitals : Each depart-

Dance Dance enables the expression of musical ideas and sounds through body movement. Third Street Music School Settlement believes that dance and music are inseparably connected, and that dance offers a unique opportunity for physical and artistic expression. Third Street’s dance program emphasizes proper body alignment, healthy physical development and the complete integration of music and dance. In addition to being a discipline of its own, dance study can help to expand the musicianship of instrumentalists and singers. For example, dance can enhance the physical connection to music in terms of breathing

and artistic expression. It also helps develop a deeper understanding of the many musical forms that are based on dance styles like the waltz, sarabande, minuet, gigue, barcarolle, mazurka and polonaise. Third Street recommends that all music students study dance at some point in their education. Students follow a carefully developed, sequential course of study that includes increased participation and performance opportunities as they progress through the program. Students considering a career in dance can pursue an accelerated course of study.

Boys and girls master basic moves and short routines in a class that is active and fun. pre-ballet Ages 2 to 5 This introductory class for boys and girls engages young children in the basics of movement and ballet. Adult Programs Adult students are an important part of the Third Street community. The School welcomes adult students of all ages, levels and abilities for individual, partner and group music instruction on most instruments and voice, including music theory and composition, as well as selected dance classes. Chamber music and ensemble activities provide great opportunities for improving musicianship skills and for socializing. Adults may enroll at any time throughout the year and may purchase a “Season Pass� (see description on page 32), which allows flexibility in the number of individual lessons taken and when they are scheduled.
