Students voting for a magazine idea

6699 is the typographical shape of quotation marks: “ and ”. This hand-made zine is a collection gathered by students in the Design Specialized English class at Kyoto University of Art and Design.

The theme “Lockscreen Psychology” was chosen by popular vote in class on Wednesday the 29th of May, 2018. It was suggested by Lu Wang (Lulu). Each page in this magazine contains an introduction of each student’s lockscreen, and the psychology of their choice behind it.

Can you guess what kind of student this is, just by looking at their lockscreen?

Hi! My name is Duncan Brotherton. I’m a teacher at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I teach various English courses in the Language Center. I’m interested in design theory, typography and editorial design. I also like craft beer, classic books and the beauty of nature.

This is a picture of the river very close to my house in Kyoto. I live near the mountains to the West, so the area is always very green. I took it in the spring of 2018, on a day where the greenery was just starting to come to fullness. I always go down to the river here to take a photo; the place has a very personal connection for me being so close to my house, and also it’s a great place to take a breather. I usually just snap a photo on my iphone.

When I think about it, I notice that I tend to change my lock screen seasonally. Usually I feel like changing it when the image is out of season. For example, if the picture is still one from winter, but it’s spring, I feel like it’s out of season and I either take a photo of something seasonal, or I find the latest seasonal photo on my phone.

I’m from Australia, from a small city called Darwin in the North, which is quite tropical. There are only two seasons in Darwin: the wet and the dry. In Japan there are four distinct seasons and seasonal activities and foods almost every month... before I came here i’d never felt the seasons as strongly as I do now... in Darwin I would eat tomatoes all year round and think nothing of it, but in Japan I feel a bit strange eating tomatoes out of season.

From my lockscreens, you can see that I’m a nature lover.

You could probably tell that I enjoy walking around my neighborhood and soaking up the sights, smells and sounds. If you watch my patterns, you’ll see that I don’t change my lockscreen so often, but it’s always something that reflects the season we are in right now.

I’m Cha Minjin (Call me Chacha) from Korea. I’m in the 3rd year in Spatial Design. I’m studying in the Jewelry Design course. I’m a person without individuality, but that is my individuality. If you like shavedice, you can be my best friend.

This is my lock screen from the 2nd of June, 2018.

The picture is one of my favorite brands, Yohji Yamamoto. It’s from his new collection. The woman looks like a painting but it’s a real person, so I think it’s quite attractive. And as usual, the song that I always listen to before I sleep is twisted. I’ve always hated piano sounds for no reason since I was young, but this song by Ryuichi Sakamoto is strangely comfortable so I like it.

I change my lock screen once a month. I usually change it when I get into something, like movies, food or people, for example. I always seem to choose dark colors without getting tired. I feel I have quite a strong taste in preferences and I easily get into something or someone.

The reason why I keep changing my lock screen is that I don’t want to lose or miss out on the things I like, even in my busy life.

Born in Bangkok, Thailand on June 12, Nuttiya Kornprasertvit is a clumsy and forgetful university student who’s always tired. If you give her snacks she will befriend you however: FEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. She does bite (most likely with sharp words) but nothing serious, just beware your fridge might go empty.

My current lock screen is of an illustration done by a Korean artist on Twitter named Chaa. I started using this illustration around a month ago. The reason I selected this illustration was because I admire her tricky yet unique coloring style consisting of a combination of unpolished lines and dreamy colors. I have a habit of cycling my lock screen between my favorite artists every month or so, and I source my images from a folder designated to hold only one work from each artist I intend to cycle through. I usually select works that have styles I aspire to achieve, which are often ones with good color palettes. The reason I do this rotation is so I don’t forget to check their new works from time to time for new content.

One of the possible psychological reasons why I cycle my lock screen images is because I’ve been in instances where I like almost every style and lose sight of what I really find inspiring or aspire to achieve. It may also be because I’ve learned that content on the Internet can disappear very quickly; there have been many occurrences in which the artists I follow delete their sites and just vanish. Perhaps not necessarily from my current lock screen, but from my acts of cycling lock screens, you could depict my character as being slightly paranoid and insecure when it comes to things I do not have complete control over such as Internet data and my own memory.

Erica Ho is a second-grade student in Information Design. Erica is a Kyoto-based Taiwanese, and has lived in Kyoto for about 3 years since 2015.

Her dog Pocky is in Taiwan. She is an animation (especially Japanese animation) lover but also likes to collect animation art books. In recent years, she prefers creating digital artwork and illustrations.

This is an Illustration I drew it on the 30th of May. The new information about the latest version of the game Pokemon was released on this day. That is the reason why I drew an illustration: to memorize the day.

As you seen, there are 3 characters in this work. Pomi, a little fox, Moro, a snow-rabbit and Eevee, a Pokemon.

I designed Pomi and Moro myself. It took me about 90 minutes to finished this work in Photoshop.

When do I change my lock screen? In fact, there is no exact period.

I usually select some lovely animal or a picture of a character or artwork as my lock screen. Once I see my lock screen, I feel pretty great and comfortable.

Hi. My name is Tomotaro Iida. I am a 1st year student studying oil painting at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I am interested in Contemporary Art and drawing. I also like DIY, journeying and bird watching.

This is a photo of Kyoichi Sawada, a famous Japanese war photographer. I found it on Google and took a screenshot. I recently set him as my lockscreen. I like him; his attitude towards life and learning English is great.

I change my lock screen picture when I get bored. I usually select my favorite people. I can see patterns in the selection: I prefer to choose people who I respect for my lock screen picture. On of the past lock screen pictures was og Nagase Tadashi, a tough Japanese adventurer.

The reason I do this is because I want to think and be like them. You can learn a lot about my character from your lock screen: I think it’s easy to recognize and identify my character.

Hello, I’m Honoka Kira. I’m a second year student studying Course Art studies and Cultural Production. My professional interests are fine art, architecture and installations. I also like drinking beer, watching movies, and anime.

This is a scene from a movie. The title is The Notebook.

This story is a very romantic love story. The two actors names are Ryan Thomas Gosling and Rachel Anne McAdams.

How often do I change my lock screen? After I watched this movie, it became my favorite lock screen.

Did you learn anything about yourself? Their relationship is my desire. They are always get into fights. But, become friends again. I want to fall in love like their love.

Hi. I’m Naoki Kumagai. I’m 19 years old. I’m studying oil painting at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in dream diaries, but I also like Pokemon and sports.

This is an illustration of a charging Elekid Pokemon. I drew it in the year 2018, during my spring break on a paint application. I like Pokemon: they relax my eyes.

How often do you change it? Once 3 months What do you usually select? I select all poke’mons. Are there any patterns? I choose cute poke’mons. Why do you think you do this? I always think about poke’mon and I love it.

3 Did you learn anything about yourself? ・Can you learn about your character from your lockscreen? Yes I can, My character is a person who seek healing for poke’mon.

I change my lock screen once every three months. I always select Pokemon. I usually choose cute Pokemon.

I’m always thinking about Pokemon; I love them very much. I can learn a lot from my lock screen; I’m the type of person who’s always seeking healing from Pokemon.

Hi, my name is Li Biyu, but you can call me Emma.

I’m from China. If you want to be my friend, you have to get know me a little bit. I don’t like bitter things such as chocolate or coffee. My hobbies are more like batting baseball and skating...but I can’t swim. The man I yearn for in my life is Takahiro Sakurai. Being an artist is one of my lifelong goals.

This illustration was download from the internet a few years ago. I like collecting beautiful illustrations. I often go to the PIXIV app to see illustrations and find some inspiration. When I see good-looking illustrations I save them to my mobile phone. PIXIV is a mobile app where many artists including ordinary people submit their own drawings and illustrations.

A few weeks ago, when I was talking with my boyfriend, he passed me his chat screenshot. I found that he didn’t have a chat background. So I wanted to pass some pictures to him. When I was looking for an illustration in an album, I discovered this one. This illustration gives a feeling of silence with a beautiful night sky plus the dancing fireflies. It looks beautiful. While passing this illustration to him, I also set it as his lock screen.

I change the lock screen depending on my mood. Maybe I will change it on the same day, maybe I won’t change it for over one year. I often choose a beautiful illustration as my lock screen: I choose something that looks comfortable so that when I pick up my mobile phone and can feel comfortable.

Hello, my name is Megan Marumi Yama. I am a first year student studying Illustration at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in visual design, photography, and animation. I also enjoy eating, gardening, and shopping.

My current lock screen is of my baby girl “Nala” in California.

I have wanted a dog for my entire life and my dad claimed that he was allergic. Every Christmas I would write “A dog” on my wishlist. Of course my wish would never come true and I eventually gave up. Fast forward to when I’m about to move to Japan, my mom considered letting us foster a dog. She said it was a good compromise because our house wasn’t ready for a dog. I immediately applied to foster through an adoption agency, and my mom wanted a “Medium size, quiet, and no shedding. MAKE SURE IT DOESN’T SHED A TON”.

My options were a bit limited but I applied for the ones that fit her description. Angel, Glitter, Poppy, the list goes on. Fortunately, they were all adopted which I am so happy about, but I still wanted to foster one. I was rigorously checking their website when I saw Nala’s picture. “40 lbs, sweet, and in need of a good home”. I thought she would be a perfect fit and I wanted to love her and prepare her for her forever home. When we got her, she was the sweetest, smelliest dog I had ever met.

Also she’s 65 lbs. She was definitely not the kind of dog that matched my moms specifications but I didn’t care. I decided to try not to get attached because there was just no way my dad would let us keep her.

Thankfully with a lot of extra convincing from my aunt and Nala’s charm, in 3 days my dad decided to let us adopt her. My family says its the best decision they have ever made and she has brought out family closer together. Well, it turns out that my dad was lying to me about being allergic so he wouldn’t have to deal with my begging. Although I was lied to, I can’t stay mad for long because the outcome is Nala.

Every morning Nala will come into my room and rest her head on my bed and she stares at me until I wake up. The face on my lockscreen is exactly how she looks at me and it melts my heart every time. I was fortunate enough to snap a picture before she looks away. I only recently started using her as my lock screen because I never see her anymore. I can see that I choose pictures that I love and make me feel calm or happy. I usually check my phone first thing in the morning and the first thing I see is her adorable face and it puts me in a great mood. I used to use illustrations from my favorite artists when I was back home and didn’t consider using her pictures because I didn’t have to. But using her pictures now makes me excited for when I can see her again.

My name is Kana Matsumoto. I’m a 3rd year student studying product design at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in planning products and package design. I also like Japanese rock music, masking tape and rice cakes.

My lock screen is an illustration drawn by Hatsuki Miyahara. She is my favorite illustrator. Transparency and colorfulness are her trademarks. I like her works because they’re beautiful and cute. I first heard about her works when I was a junior high school student. She drew an illustration for the cover of a book I read. She often draws illustrations for books covers. I also use her other work as the wallpaper of my PC. I was very happy to get her signature when I went to her solo exhibition last year in Osaka.

I don’t change my lock screen frequently. But when I do, I change it when I find a picture or illustration I like. I don’t have a fixed pattern. Sometimes I choose my favorite illustration, and sometimes I choose a picture of my favorite artists. The reason I choose them is that my favorite things make me happy. They cheer me up.

Maybe you can’t learn about my character from my lock screen. I think that I have some goods that look similar in taste though.

Hi. My name is Sora Nakabayashi. I’m a first grade student studying how to make films in the film production course. I’m interested in Experimental Films, with directors like David Lynch and Shuji Terayama. I also like some artists like Taro Okamoto and Yayoi Kusama.

My Lock screen picture is Franz Ferdinand. They’re a U.K. Rock Band. They formed when they were college students at the Glasgow School of Art. Actually, they tried to sing rock music in order to be popular among girls (girls love rock music).

I first heard about them last year in December. When I listened to their song Take Me Out, I though they were so cool! Not only their style but also lyrics are really unique and cool. I think girls must love their lyrics.

I choose this picture, because I have a longing to be like them. They graduated from art college, so their music videos are extremely cool, and their ideas are original: I think art students would like those designs. I want to be like them because their style, designs, and ideas are so cool.

Hi! My name is Ami Nakano. I’m a 4th year student studying Art Produce at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in Art Work Enjoyment, Area Art Projects and Exhibition Construction.

I also like playing shamisen, watching movies, and shopping.

Ariana Grande is my favorite singer. This photo is from her new album, No Tears Left To Cry.. I like her looks and her music. I downloaded this picture from the Internet.

I change my lock screen picture once a month. I choose photos that make me happy. I never get sick of the photos I choose. I do this because I want to see them everyday, all the time.

The photos I choose for my lock screen are my favorite artists, favorite cars and a pictures with my boy friend.

When I lay eyes on my favorite things on my screen, my motivation goes up.

Hello, I’m Ayaka Obu from Kyoto University of Art and Design.

My lock screen is members from my favorite band, Yorunohonki Dance: the person wearing blue shirt is guitarist Kazuki Nishida, and other person wearing white shirt is the drummer Akito Suzuka. This photo was taken on June 3 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture. They played the stage of the Million Rock Festival (百万石音楽祭), an outdoor music festival.

The sequence of this picture shows Kazuki encouraging Akito, before their autograph session. What did they do?

Surprisingly, Kazuki hit Akito. Kazuki said “喝。” (“Katsu” a scolding or threat said as a shout). But Akito didn’t feel good, so he said to Kazuki “Don’t do these things before our event.”

I often change my lock screen when I go to live events and festivals. Why? Because I want to feel each and every time. That’s why my lock screen’s photos are mostly my really favorite artists. I don’t live with a cute dog or cat, but if I take care of someone’s pet, I will set it as my lock screen. I don’t set photos taken with me or my friends. It makes me feel so embarrassed…

So, my lock screen shows “MY FAVORITES”. I feel so good watching my lock screen.

My name is Cheng-Chung Shin, but you can call me Harrison. I’m in the KUAD Mixed Midea course.

This picture is the ending of one of my favorite skate videos. I put this as my lock screen when I was 19. I’d always had a dream to become a pro skater since I was 17, although it didn’t workout. I broke my ankle, gave up and entered the army.

I’ve been using this lock screen for three years. I’ve changed smart phones three times, but I’ve never changed my lock screen, if I find something really fits me well I won’t change it so easily.

This picture always reminds me not to forget where I came from, why I started, and what’s my goal.

Hi! My name is Haruna Takata. I’m a 3rd year student studying Performing Arts at Kyoto Univercity of Art and Design. I’m interested in acting and stage directing. I also like taking pictures, cooking, cocktails and whisky.

This is a picture of the sunset at Sanjou station on April 2nd. I took the photo on my iPhone and adjusted it. The reason why I took this picture was that the beautiful coloring and simple composition of the sunset moved me.

I change my lock screen about once a month. I often use pictures and illustrations. I have pictures of the sky, landscapes, posters and cocktails, for example. I think there is some pattern. They tend to be something I think is beautiful. I like taking pictures. I usually looking for something fascinating. At times like this, I’m attracted to sunsets, landscapes and cocktails. When I change my lock screen to a poster, there is usually a movie or an exhibition which I’m interested in, or a performance in which I appeared. I work hard for those events. I learned about my sensitivity towards what I think is beautiful. I didn’t think it would become clear as to how I think from my lock screen. When I changing my lock screen from now onwards, I’ll be paying attention to that.

Hi! My name is Lu Wang, but call me Lulu. I come from China. I am a first year student studying textiles at Kyoto University of art and Design. I am interested in how to make Japanese Kimonos; this is also the reason why I study in Japan. I also fancy Lolita fashion.

My lock screen is a girl called Sansui Li from China. She is standing outside on the grass, with her back to the railing, looking very relaxed and comfortable.

The tone of this picture makes it look like a 20th century movie screenshot, but it is a promotion photo for a cloting brand. The model on my screenshot is also one of the brand designers. The reason why I choose this picture is not only because I am the fan of Actually, the clothing band is the brand, but also I want to be a kind of Lolita fashion brand. this kind of person.

Lolita fashion emerged during I am a fan of Barbie dolls, I collected a lot when I was younger.

When I grew up, I started to dress myself up. The model in the photo is actually the same age as me, also with the same interest in Lolita fashion. When she graduated from university, she turned her interest into a job which I admire a lot. I am also a student of an arts university, Sansui Li is the type of person I want to be.

the 1990s as a radical form of street style born out of the Japanese taste for Hello Kitty cuteness. Whether dressed in pink, power blue, red, white or black, Lolitas are immediately recognizable by their doll-like make-up, frilly shirts, fanciful headgear, ribbons and lace. It is a very exaggerated style. With the development of the audience demand, Lolita fashion also changed gradually. This brand is one of the modern Lolita brands: it shows exquisite girls, but they’re not that exaggerated, and wear normal clothes. With traditional Lolita fashion, you have to spend a lot of time dressing up, also you have to wear a lot to make it fluffy. So I prefer the modern Lolita fashion more.

I change my lock screen twice a year; I do not like to change it a lot. Because I get used to it, if I change my lock screen it makes me feel strange about the phone. I usually select the same kind of picture: a girl wearing a beautiful dress.

Because I think I want to be the person, every time I open the mobile phone, it gives me an unconscious though that I am going to be better.

I think it is easy to understand my character from my lock screen, because I usually wear this kind of clothing. But this kind of clothing also makes me learn a lot, because it is quite unusual: you need to do your make up better and diet to fit into the clothed better.

Hi my name is VE△N. I’m a 3 year student studying character design at Kyoto University of Art & Design. I’m interested in hip-hop. My dream is to be a Korean top rapper. Design is just my hobby. And I also like liquor.

This is my lock screen. He is my favorite artist, a Korean rapper. I love hip-hop; when I searched for a cool song, I found his song. It was so cool. I searched for him on the net, and found his face. He is so handsome. So I followed his instagram, and download this picture. But, now... he is a skinhead. Maybe he likes unique fashion, so he became skinhead.

I have phobia of skin-heads, so I changed my lock screen to the other picture. This is my artwork. I drew this picture for homework. The theme was ‘Japanese illustration sold to foreigners.’ I like making patterns with the Japanese feeling. For example, maneki neko, cherry blossom... But, my teacher wanted a character illustration, so it became my lock screen because I was afraid to throw it away.

Looking at this lock screen, you might think I like cute things. But I don’t like cute things. My homework theme is an illustration to sell to foreigners, I have just drawn a illustration to sell... But I don’t change my lock screen, because It’s bothersome to change.

My name is Shiina Yamamoto. I’m a first grade student studing about fashion design and space design at KUAD. I’m interested in shoe design, human’s faces and their figures. I also like movies, sports and drinking water.

This is a photo of a Chinese model whose name is Taoye, but perhaps it is her stage name (I don’t know her real name).

When I was looking for a Gucci collection on Instagram, I found her picture. The reason why I chose this photo is that I love the mole on her eyebrows, so I enlarged the photo and set is as my background picture.

I change my lockscreen about twice a year. I usually select a girl’s face, but they’re not cute. If I find a point I like, I pick it. Why do I choose the face of a girl? l feel a longing there. Every time I see this, it reminds me that humans are not just their appearances: we have to respect our mutual individuality.
