Welcome

Benenden Health’s partnership with Channel 4 has enabled us to shine a spotlight on many aspects of health. To tie in with the launch of the Menopause Hub on the Benenden Health App, we look at menopause, with insights from GP Dr Sarah Hattam and the experiences of our cover stars, Rylan Clark and his mum, Linda.

If, like me, you enjoy making the most of the warmer weather, turn to page 21 for our practical guide to protecting you and your family’s health when you’re out having fun. Meanwhile, on page 26 we offer some advice on dealing with dementia – a condition affecting many families in the UK.

Support when you need it

Our 24/7 GP Helpline offers extra peace of mind when you need to talk to a GP

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2022 we helped 35,975 members through our 24/7 GP Helpline

Unexpected but non-emergency medical issues have the habit of cropping up at the most inconvenient times. Maybe it’s Saturday night and your little one is running a temperature and you don’t want to wait until the surgery opens on Monday morning. Or perhaps you need a prescription quickly but can’t get an appointment with your GP until next week.

With the NHS coming under increasing pressure, as a Benenden Health member you can access a service any time of the day or night that allows you to book an appointment and talk to a GP sooner than you would through your local surgery.

Available from day one of your membership, you can call the 24/7 GP Helpline 24 hours a day, seven days a week or use the Benenden Health App to

CASE STUDY

book a phone or video consultation with one of our team of experienced GPs.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

 Telephone consultations are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

 Video consultations are available seven days a week, 8am to 10pm every day except Christmas Day and require an email address and access to an internet-enabled device with a camera and microphone.

 You can access this service when travelling overseas.

 You can book a consultation for your immediate family by calling our helpline. It’s not currently possible to book appointments for immediate family members via the Benenden Health App.

 If clinically appropriate, our GPs can prescribe some medications. Your prescription

can either be collected from a local pharmacy or delivered directly to you the next working day. Prescription costs aren’t covered by your membership or your NHS entitlement.

WHAT’S EXCLUDED

 This service is not intended for emergencies or urgent conditions as this may delay necessary treatment.

 The 24/7 GP Helpline isn’t designed to replace your own GP as we don’t have access to your medical records.

 The service can’t provide a referral that members can use to access any other Benenden Health services.

 GPs are not able to issue NHS prescriptions – separate charges apply for the cost of medication and delivery, which you’ll pay directly to the pharmacy.

 We’re unable to provide prescriptions outside the UK.

Adrian from York on getting medical support when he needed it the most

“I had previously been told by a consultant that I needed umbilical hernia surgery. As it was more complex than usual, I was placed on an NHS waiting list which was at least six to nine months.

so I started getting a bit worried. On Boxing Day things had not improved. With all the strikes and staff shortages, I was reluctant to go to A&E for fear of being turned away and wasting people’s time.

“I decided to contact the 24/7 GP Helpline to get some guidance. I called at 9am and was booked in for a consultation with a GP at 11am. After chatting with the doctor, he advised me to go straight to A&E. I was so glad I did – I ended up undergoing emergency surgery the morning after for a strangulated hernia.

“I’m now eight weeks post-op and back to running and getting ready for a snowboarding holiday. Calling the 24/7 GP Helpline really gave me that additional medical support when I needed it the most!”

Upto£2,500indiagnostics

Service focus

From 1 April, we are raising the diagnostic limit from £1,800 to £2,500 to ensure Benenden Health members are not affected by the rise in medical costs.

For anyone experiencing new symptoms, it’s vital to get a diagnosis as soon as you can to put your mind at ease and, if available, through your Benenden Health membership, access the treatment you need.

If you have been referred by an NHS practitioner, are faced with a long wait on the NHS and have been a member of Benenden Health for six months or more, Medical Diagnostics is here to support you. In 2022 alone, Benenden Health was able to fund more than 18,000 consultations.

Howdoes itwork?

 Please provide us with the following information:

1 Who have you been referred to? (consultant or test type)

2 How long is the NHS wait?

3 Do you have a referral letter from an NHS practitioner?

 We will look to authorise an appointment within our network of private hospitals nationwide or at Benenden Hospital in Kent if you live within a two-hour drive of it.

What’s included

 Depending on authorisation, our service includes appointments with an

 All authorised medical costs up to £2,500 will be settled directly by Benenden Health.

 All authorised appointments must take place within six months of the authorisation.

What’s excluded

 You’ll be responsible for funding any unauthorised diagnostics costs or any

incurred costs over £2,500. To help you manage these costs, ask the consultant or the facility where you have your appointment to provide you with a guide price that includes all associated fees.

 In some cases, we may advise that it is safer for you to remain on the NHS waiting list, for example, for psychiatry or a suspected cancer diagnosis.

 Other exclusions include cosmetic concerns and secondopinion consultations.

How to treat sports injuries

The warmer weather means many of us are getting active outdoors, and with that comes the risk of sports injuries. Benenden Hospital experts outline the most frequent problems as well as options for self-pay treatments

FOOT AND ANKLE

Liam Stapleton, Sports Medicine Podiatrist at Benenden Hospital

Taking up running and increasing your mileage too quickly is a common cause of injuries to the foot and ankle.

Achilles tendinopathy is pain and swelling of the large tendon at the back of the ankle. There are two very effective treatments that we use at Benenden Hospital, each with an 80% success rate.

Shockwave therapy works by sending pulses of energy through the skin, stimulating tissue to repair itself. High volume injection (HVI) involves injecting a saline solution mixed with local

ELBOW

Hemant Thakral, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Benenden Hospital

Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) affects the inner elbow. It causes pain when bending your arm and performing gripping or twisting movements. It can also be caused by other repetitive activities and by overloading the tendons, such as by lifting a heavy object with a straight arm.

Regular stretching and exercises can help support

and heal the tendons, and you may need ultrasound therapy. If the problem persists after three months, you can be referred to a consultant for steroid or other therapeutic injections or, as a last resort, surgery. The surgical procedure involves releasing the tendon, repairing any tears and removing scar tissue.

anaesthetic into the area around the Achilles under ultrasound guidance. This loosens scar tissue and adhesions so the tendon can move freely.

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the band of tissue along the sole of your foot. It causes pain under the heel, especially when you first get out of bed. Overuse is the main cause, but flat feet or high arches can mean you’re more prone to it.

Treatments include steroid injections, shockwave therapy and custom-made insoles to correct foot posture.

SHOULDER

Daniel

Consultant Orthopaedic

Shoulder injuries are often caused by a sudden impact in sports such as rugby and football, or by over-stretching the joint.

A labrum tear is damage to the thick band of tissue that encircles the ball and socket joint and helps hold it in place.

at Benenden Hospital

A traumatic injury can detach it from the bone, causing a feeling of instability and shoulder pain, particularly when you rotate your arm backwards. You may also feel pain when your arm crosses your chest or with twisting motions.

REDUCE THE RISK OF SPORTS INJURIES

 Start off gradually and build up, especially if you’ve been inactive for a while.

 Before you start playing, raise your body temperature with some jogging on the spot, then warm up and stretch the muscle groups you’ll be using most.

SUPPORT AS PART OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP

It’s important to get an exact diagnosis with an MRI or ultrasound scan. Steroid injections can help dampen down the inflammation. If a tear fails to heal, you may need keyhole surgery to reattach the tendons to the bone. AVAILABLE AS

After six months of membership, you can call us on 0800 414 8100 to request a physiotherapist to assess your condition over the phone or on a video call.

 Treatment could include guided self-managed exercise or virtual or faceto-face physiotherapy (up to six sessions).

KNEE

 Correct technique can help you avoid repetitive strain injuries so get some coaching if you’re unsure.

A SELFPAY OPTION

For information on self-pay treatments at Benenden Hospital, call 01580 232499 and ask about member discounts and payment plans.

Mark Jones, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Benenden Hospital

An ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tear is damage to the strong band of tissue that runs diagonally through the knee and gives it stability. It’s usually caused by twisting, jarring or overextending the joint, so is common in sports with quick changes of direction, such as netball and football. Symptoms include pain, swelling, limited range of motion, and your knee suddenly giving way.

If you have a severe rupture or accompanying damage to other parts of

your knee, you are likely to need ACL reconstruction surgery. This is commonly done as keyhole surgery and involves using a graft, usually a small piece of tissue taken from your hamstring, to reconstruct the rupture.

Surgery is followed by a physiotherapy programme and it usually takes three to six months to get to the point where you can safely do activities such as walking on uneven ground, and 12 to 18 months to return to sports participation.

Behind the scenes of Benenden Charitable Trust

Did you know that Benenden Charitable Trust (BCT) has a single benefactor, Benenden Health? BCT was set up to provide financial assistance to current and former Benenden Health members experiencing hardship and distress. This can include health-related needs, specialist equipment, home adaptations and financial help if everyday living costs are a struggle.

BCT has a robust review panel of experts and clinicians who assess each application to decide whether they can support the applicant. The review panel’s decisions are final. The charity is also governed by three trustees who have in-depth knowledge of the sector and whose primary goal is to support those going through tough times.

BCT and Benenden Health have joined together to provide automated external defibrillators to local communities. See next issue to meet some of our lucky recipients.

MEET THE TEAM

BCT is managed by a small but highly dedicated team who will be able to support you on the whole application journey, advising which documents are required and how to navigate our online application portal.

Michelle helps support applicants through their application journey, from the initial enquiry through to the decision stage. She has worked at Benenden Health for more than 22 years and with BCT for two years.

With 16 years at BCT, Amanda has a wealth of experience in supporting applicants. She works as the Charitable Trust Manager and supports our applicants, colleagues and trustees in BCT’s daily running.

Cheryl, our Society Matron, has also been with BCT for four years and is responsible for the charity’s process and strategy. She also brings her considerable clinical expertise to support applicants.

New beginnings

A grant from Benenden Charitable Trust towards a hip operation helped Carole Parker get back on track

Carole Parker, 62, was facing a tough situation with her health and her finances.

Carole, from Burley in Wharfedale near Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire, was having excruciating hip pain, making it increasingly difficult to do her job at the local garden centre, which involved long periods standing. In May 2022, she decided she was no longer able to continue her job and went on Statutory Sick Pay.

A Benenden Health member since 2021, Carole was advised by a consultant that she needed a new hip. She started researching different NHS hospitals but was told she would have to wait until June 2023.

“That was too long,” explained Carole, “and I simply couldn’t afford all of the £13,500 needed to have the operation privately. It was a tight financial situation for me.”

She called Benenden Health and it was suggested that her case might be considered for funding by Benenden Charitable Trust.

“They were absolutely brilliant,” says Carole. “Michelle at Benenden Charitable Trust had also had hip surgery so it was wonderful to speak to someone so understanding and professional. The whole application process from start to finish had a personal touch – nothing was too much bother.”

l Call us on 0800 414 8450 (Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm) to discuss your circumstances and to request an application form

l Email us at charitabletrust@ benenden.org.uk

Carole was delighted when she heard her application was successful. “I was over the moon to be given a grant of £3,000. It helped me no end.”

Things are looking up for Carole who had the hip operation last November. “Work have been really good, so I don’t have to rush my recovery. The BCT process was brilliant – they helped me get back on my feet.”

Wild swimming

Boost your mental and physical health with an outdoor dip

Wild swimming has enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent years, likely due to swimming pool closures during lockdown. If you don’t mind the cold, wild swimming can be hugely beneficial to your health. Anyone who has so much as dipped a toe into a British waterway will know that the cold water sends blood straight to your organs and away from your skin. The effect is a much-improved circulation, particularly when done regularly.

As a calorie-burner, wild swimming is also a great option. Not only do you get the usual benefits of the exercise itself, but your body will also be working hard to keep you warm.

Ultimately, though, wild swimmers will describe a sense of liberation from embracing the elements. As a mood-lifter, a perspective-giver and a satisfaction-supplier, wild swimming can help you to leave the stresses of the day behind.

Make sure you consider safety. It’s best to try out wild swimming for the first time with a group or with a friend who has done it before. You’ll find wild swimming clubs on social media. Always take a set of warm, dry clothes to change into and remember that your swimming ability will be reduced by the effects of the cold. Pick a location that is suitable, with considerations including currents, water depth, weeds, algae and accessibility.

MY

My time wild swimming

Phillip Conde, Business Development Executive at Benenden Health, reveals his experiences

“I started wild swimming when I was about three, so I’ve always known it. Then I had a back injury 10 years ago and so I’ve increased the amount of swimming a lot over the last few years.

“I don’t work out how far I’ve swum, it’s just about being in the water. I normally stay in for around an hour, which is quite long. Sometimes my daughter wants me to stay in a little longer as I go with her.

“It’s a shock to the system when you first get into the water so it’s important to focus on your breathing and slow your heart rate down. Your body adapts to the temperature of the water after a few seconds and then it feels amazing.”

5 no-gym workouts

Keeping active doesn’t mean you have to pull on the Lycra. Here are some everyday tasks that offer fitness benefits

The key to staving off weight gain – as well as diseases such as diabetes, which are associated with inactivity – is burning calories. That’s why we’re advised to do 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week.

It sounds a lot but, says David Rogerson of Sheffield Hallam University’s Academy of Sport and Physical Activity: “That breaks down to 22 minutes a day. And what’s known as Instrumental Activities of Daily Living – everyday physical activities – can be part of that.”

1Mowing the lawn

CALORIE BURN 367.5 kcals per hour

Pushing a lawnmower strengthens legs and arms and is good for heart and lung function. In fact, David sees gardening as the best all-round exercise. “It’s not just mowing, but carrying compost, pushing a wheelbarrow, digging beds, weeding,” he says. “These improve strength, mobility and cardiovascular function. Being engaged in nature also boosts mental wellbeing.”

2Washing the car

CALORIE BURN 257.25 kcals per hour

Skip the car wash and wash the car by hand – not only does it burn calories, it benefits the cardiovascular system and improves mobility. “That’s because you’re squatting, bending, twisting –moving your body in three-dimensional space,” explains David. “Mobility is important, particularly as we age, as lack of balance and coordination is associated with falls.”

3 Vacuuming

CALORIE BURN 205.8 kcals per hour

Vacuuming gives arms and the upper body a workout and burns a similar number of calories as a low-impact aerobics class. David says: “It works the muscles of the back and hamstrings to maintain good posture (keep a flat back if you can).”

4 Carrying the shopping

CALORIE BURN 183.6 kcals per hour

“As well as expending energy, carrying heavy shopping bags counts as strength training,” explains David. “It also increases grip strength – an important health marker, indicating strength and muscle mass across the whole body.”

5 Climbing the stairs

CALORIE BURN 660 kcals per hour

Top in terms of calorie burn, climbing the stairs really works the heart and lungs too. “The stepping-up movement also has a strengthening effect,” says David, “and is great for muscles (thighs and calves) and joints (hips and ankles).”

Member story

Pet Cotterell’s knee pain started after a broken right ankle meant her left knee was taking the strain during the healing process. Steroid injections from her GP offered limited relief and there was a long NHS waiting list for knee replacements.

Thanks to her Benenden Health membership, Pet was referred to Benenden Hospital (only a 15-minute drive from her home) for diagnosis in December. Soon afterwards, following an arthroscopy, a keyhole procedure to examine the joint, she was booked in at Benenden Hospital for knee replacement surgery on the NHS at the end of May with consultant orthopaedic surgeon Kumar Reddy. “He did a marvellous job,” enthuses 72-year-old Pet. “After about six weeks, the flexibility in my knee was almost back to 100%.”

But then Pet began to experience pain in her right hip and, six months after her knee surgery, she was referred back to Benenden Hospital via NHS Choose and Book for a hip replacement on the NHS, this time carried out by consultant orthopaedic surgeon Raj Shrivastava. It was done using an epidural, or spinal anaesthetic, so she was awake during the procedure. “I was chatting to the anaesthetist all the way through and was amazed when she said it was finished after just over an hour,” says Pet.

She was soon back on her feet and a few months later was able to enjoy a three-mile walk around Dungeness Nature Reserve with husband Philip.

“While you’re recovering from joint replacement surgery you want to feel supported, safe and at home, so I’d really recommend

HOW

MUCH VITAMIN D DO WE NEED?

The dosage for daily supplementation is typically as follows, unless advised otherwise by your doctor:

 Adults: Between 25 and 75mcg

 Teens: 25mcg

 Children over 4: 10-20mcg

 Children aged 1-4: 10mcg

The benefits of vitamin D

Getting enough of the ‘sunshine vitamin’ is important for many areas of our health

Statistics show that around one in six people in the UK are vitamin D deficient. Between late March/early April to the end of September, most people can make the required vitamin D through sunlight and some food sources (oily fish, liver, mushrooms, meat and fortified foods).

However, doctors now often advise taking supplements during the winter.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF VITAMIN D?

 Helps bones absorb calcium and other nutrients

 Supports the immune system and may help prevent prolonged or excessive inflammatory responses, including from some viruses and infections

 Can support healthy cell replication and may play a role in protecting against developing autoimmune conditions

 Supports cardiovascular health, helping to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol levels and inflammation

 Helps manage blood sugar levels and works with calcium to regulate insulin secretion

 May help prevent depression and mood disorders, especially during the winter

 Is thought to help prevent obesity – deficiency is linked to greater volumes of fat storage

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY?

Symptoms include weakened immunity, frequent coughs and colds, fatigue, bone ache and muscle pain, depression

and headaches. In the worst cases in children it can lead to rickets, a condition that affects bone development.

WHAT CAUSES US TO BE DEFICIENT IN VITAMIN D?

1. Lack of sun

Most children today spend unprecedented hours inside. Similarly, most adults work indoors, exercise inside and spend their free time at home. It’s no wonder we don’t get enough vitamin D and that more than one billion people worldwide are deficient in it.

2. Risk factors

Other reasons you may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency include having underlying health conditions, having darker skin and being overweight.

MENOPAUSE MATTERS

Get the facts from our menopause expert Dr Sarah Hattam, and hear about the experiences of Linda and Rylan Clark

For many, the hormonal changes caused by the menopause and the less well-known period leading up to it –perimenopause – can present significant physical and mental health challenges. Until relatively recently, the menopause was not usually discussed publicly and was often seen as no more than a few hot flushes.

Thankfully, things have changed and we’re finally talking a lot more openly about the menopause and how it affects women and their families.

Be Healthy asked GP and women’s health expert Dr Sarah Hattam to answer some common questions about this significant stage of life.

What is the (peri)menopause?

The menopause is a natural part of female ageing. It marks the end of the reproductive phase of a woman’s life when menstrual cycles stop. When a woman hasn’t had a period for 12 consecutive months (and there isn’t another obvious cause for this), she has reached her menopause. The average age for menopause in the UK is currently 51-52

years. But it’s important to remember that for some women menopause can happen much earlier than this. These women need appropriate medical advice to reduce the risk of longer-term health complications from an early menopause.

The perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to the menopause. It usually lasts for several years. As the ovaries run out of eggs, levels of the female sex hormone oestrogen start to fluctuate and decline, causing many different perimenopausal symptoms.

What are the typical symptoms?

Women have receptors for oestrogen all over their bodies so the symptoms of the perimenopause can be wide-ranging.

Many women first notice that they don’t cope as well with changes in ambient temperature. This is because the brain’s thermostat is affected by fluctuating hormone levels and can trigger hot flushes and night sweats, a common feature of early perimenopause.

Other physical effects include irregular periods, aching joints, tiredness, sleep disturbance, headaches, dry or itchy skin and hair changes, urinary symptoms and vaginal dryness or soreness.

16 Be Healthy Summer 2023 INTERVIEW
GETTY

‘Thankfully, we’re finally talking a lot more openly about the menopause’

Support from family and friends can help women navigate the menopause

benenden.co.uk 17

Symptoms such as brain fog, forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating can lead to loss of confidence at home and at work. Women may also experience emotional changes such as mood swings and irritability, feeling low or anxious.

The mid-forties and fifties can bring with them competing demands for many women. Caring responsibilities for older family members, children still living at home and work commitments can collide with symptoms of perimenopause to make this a challenging time. It’s important to seek support from family and friends. Also speak to your employer to see what menopause support they have in place.

What medical treatments are available?

The most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Current guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence tells us that for most women aged between 45 and 55 who are experiencing menopausal symptoms, the benefits of HRT usually outweigh any small risks.

Women in the UK can be prescribed HRT which is ‘body-identical’ on the NHS. This means that the hormones contained in it are the same as the hormones produced by a woman’s ovaries. When the oestrogen in HRT is given through the skin as a patch, gel or spray, the risks are exceedingly small for most women.

HRT also provides significant benefits to female health beyond the menopause and into later life. It strengthens bones, protects the heart and cardiovascular system, and is likely to protect brain health too.

Some women experience significant problems with vaginal dryness and soreness and/or bladder issues during the menopause and beyond. This can affect their sex life and general quality of life. Local oestrogen therapy is highly effective and can be delivered directly to the vaginal area as a pessary, gel or ring. This type of local HRT can, and usually should, be continued long-term.

For women who are not able to or don’t wish to take HRT, cognitive behavioural therapy is an effective way to reduce the impact of hot flushes and sweats.

What lifestyle changes can ease the symptoms of the menopause?

Alcohol and caffeine tend to exacerbate hot flushes and sleep disturbance so it’s a good idea to reduce both. Stress often makes symptoms worse too, so making time for self-care is important.

How can women talk to their families about the issue?

We need to talk about the impact of the menopause and to normalise it. After all, it’s an issue that affects 50% of the population. Equally, don’t expect your loved ones to be mind-readers. Find a time when you can calmly explain how you’re feeling and suggest practical ways that they can support you.

What should be done to increase support and awareness?

Every woman’s experience of the perimenopause is different. A fortunate few sail through with few or no symptoms. For some women, the symptoms can be severe and debilitating.

My top tip is to find out which doctor or nurse in your surgery has an interest in women’s health and menopause and make an appointment to see them. Keep track of your symptoms and write them down.

It’s great to see the increasing awareness of menopause. We still need to ensure that women who experience early or premature menopause know that this can predispose them to longer-term health issues and encourage them to come forward for advice and treatment.

Dr Sarah Hattam is an experienced NHS GP, an accredited menopause specialist doctor and founder of the workplace wellbeing and performance consultancy conciliohealth.com.

How we can help

To help members, we’ve launched a new Menopause Hub on the Benenden Health App. For more information, turn to page 20.

Benenden Health’s partnership with Channel 4 included Rylan Clark talking to his mum, Linda, about her experience of menopause. Be Healthy asked the mother and son duo about how they dealt with Linda’s early menopause.

INTERVIEW
‘Caring responsibilities and work commitments can collide with symptoms of perimenopause to make this a challenging time’
RYLAN CLARK AND LINDA CLARK ON MENOPAUSE

Be Healthy: Rylan, tell us about what you experienced when your mum was going through the menopause? What should be done to support women?

Rylan: People should talk about menopause and not bottle it up.

I remember being quite young and Mum becoming more snappy and angry with me. As a young lad, I wasn’t sure what was going on. If I’d been older, I would have asked about it. Now, it all makes a lot more sense.

As much as we need to educate women into getting themselves diagnosed, men

also need to learn about it so we can remove the stigma that surrounds menopause.

I don’t think a man will ever completely understand what a woman goes through with the menopause. But I do think men can be aware and informed and educated. It doesn’t need to be scary if you’re talking to someone about it.

BH: Linda, tell us about your experience with the

menopause. What support did you get? What needs to be done to educate people about the menopause?

Linda: My menopause came on early because of my illness (Crohn’s disease) which is not what any woman wants to happen. I didn’t know what was happening really – I felt a bit confused and lost at times. If Rylan had been older I would probably have sat him down and told him about it.

I didn’t know enough about the situation to seek the help I needed. That why it’s so important for us all to talk about it. It’s a relief if you’re talking to someone.

The boys need to step up and read about it – it will affect them as they need to be there to support their mums or partners. We have to talk about it more with our GPs and celebrities need to be more honest, like Davina (McCall) has been.

But, there’s one positive thing out of it. You don’t have any more periods!

For many, summer is a time of golden opportunity. It’s a chance to spend more time outdoors, do more exercise or prepare for a family holiday. However, increasingly hotter summers and all the fun that comes with them, can present some challenges for you and your family’s health and wellbeing. Here’s a guide on what to bear in mind…

1STAY HYDRATED

The human body is 60% water, so staying well hydrated is vital. The average adult woman is advised to drink around 2.7 litres of water per day, a man a litre more and a four-year-old child needs around 1.1 litres a day. On hot days, stock up on water-rich foods such as cucumber, tomatoes and strawberries to keep family hydration levels up.

Dehydration puts people at risk of heat exhaustion, the signs of which include thirst, dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating and cramps. Anyone affected must be cooled down and rehydrated. If there’s no recovery within 30 minutes it could indicate heatstroke, which can cause seizures and requires urgent medical attention.

BE ACTIVE SAFELY

Longer days and warmer climes may inspire a desire for activity but it is worth planning ahead, says Louis Wicking, a Senior Physiotherapist at Benenden Hospital. “If you’re an exercise rookie, beware of the boom-bust mentality,” he says. “To avoid burnout and harm, it’s important to set your goals before you start and then pace yourself to get there.”

Louis suggests identifying an aim – it may be running 5K,

achieving a target weight or the ability to walk the dog around the park non-stop. “By setting mini-goals, steadily building on progress, everything is achievable,” he says.

To foster connection as well as motivation, he encourages joining community groups, such as local parkruns (parkrun.org. uk). “It’s about much more than exercise,” says Louis. “It’s good for mental health too.”

A specialist in musculoskeletal issues, Louis cautions against “going too hard too fast” to avoid injury. Routine strains and sprains normally respond well to resting and massage, but if pain persists specialist advice should be sought. After six months of membership, Benenden Health members can self-refer for physiotherapy assessment and treatment.

2

BE AWARE OF SEASONAL ALLERGIES

For 20% of people in Britain, hayfever triggers seasonal bouts of sneezing and sniffing, coughing and wheezing. Otherwise known as rhinitis, it is a common allergic reaction to plant pollens in the air. Summer weather reports often give a pollen count, allowing people with seasonal allergies to take protective measures, such as staying indoors, shutting windows and wearing a mask in windy weather.

A range of allergies can cause rhinitis, and persistent symptoms that lead to sleeping problems or interrupt normal activity should be referred to a GP.

Sunbeds are not advised – they give out the same harmful radiation as sunlight

6

TREATING STINGS AND BITES

5PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE SUN

Sunlight nurtures good health and wellbeing, generating vitamin D, strengthening bones, promoting sleep and improving mood. But too much exposure can be harmful. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and preventing it means wearing ultraviolet (UV) protection in the sun and avoiding the midday sun.

The risks of sunlight exposure are higher for younger people. Babies should stay in the shade, while older kids/

young adults should wear a sun hat and UV-resistant clothing as well as high-factor sunscreen.

Sunscreen offering a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 with broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection is recommended to minimise the risk of damaging skin. Always check the expiry date, don’t skimp and ensure you reapply frequently. While some makeup and moisturisers do contain SPF, for better protection suncream is recommended.

Bees and wasps, spiders, horseflies and midges can deliver painful stings and bites that might cause local itching or swelling. After removing any obvious sting, routine treatment involves a soapy wash, cold compress or limb elevation and taking an antihistamine tablet or applying antihistamine cream. In rare cases there can be an infection or allergic reaction when medical help is required.

Tick bites are on the rise across the UK. To minimise the risk of picking up a tick, apply insect repellent and stick to paths in the

countryside. Wear longsleeve tops, full-length trousers and socks, and tuck everything in. After a walk in a high-risk area, check yourself and others for ticks and remove them carefully using fine tweezers or a special tick-removing tool. And don’t forget to check your dog too!

In rare cases a tick bite can transmit Lyme disease, a bacterial infection which left untreated can lead to joint inflammation and neurological problems. Symptoms may include a circular or oval rash around the bite site and flu-like feelings. It is advised to seek medical treatment.

Being born male brings with it particular health risks – men in the UK typically live around four years less than women, they are three times more likely to die from suicide and tend to seek help for health problems far less often.

Greater public awareness is starting to address this gender disparity, but there is further to go to maximise men’s health and wellbeing, whatever their age.

“There are many reasons why males are more reluctant to take charge of their own health, including social stigma and traditional reluctance to admit vulnerability,” says Benenden Health Matron Cheryl Lythgoe. “Men need to be encouraged to talk about their concerns.”

Checkoutany changes/symptoms

Right across the lifespan there are male-specific health issues to consider. In young adulthood, men are at particular risk of testicular cancer. “Males ought to examine their testicles once a month, getting to know what’s normal for them,” says Cheryl.

Older men may develop an enlarged prostate gland in the pelvis, which can constrict the flow of urine, causing discomfort and frequent urination. Clinical investigation is important and effective treatments are available.

Checkinon yourlifestyle

Men are 26% more likely than women to develop type 2 diabetes, and heart disease is the biggest killer of men over 50. “It’s all about being more active and making

lifestyle changes,” says Cheryl. “A general health check-up could give you a baseline against which to monitor progress towards your goals.”

Being more prone to risky behaviours, men can develop harmful addictions – commonly

drinking, smoking and drugs. “Acknowledging the issue is the starting point to making better choices,” says Cheryl.

Checkinon mentalhealth

An estimated one-ineight males in the UK has a mental health issue such as anxiety, yet few seek professional help for it. Celebrities sharing their mental health challenges is helping to normalise discussion about male wellbeing. “It’s OK not to be OK,” says Cheryl. “Too many men still suffer in silence.”

Loneliness has been shown to have a similar detrimental effect on health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, so group exercise is a good way to counteract this. Many communities have walking football and walking rugby clubs to encourage older men to participate in group sports. “Find out what’s near you and take steps to safeguard your health and wellbeing,” says Cheryl.

More than 900,000 people in the UK have dementia, with one in six of those affected aged over 80. Here’s a guide to living with and caring for someone with the condition

DEALING WITH DEMENTIA

MEN’S DEMENTIAHEALTH

6 WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR RISK

According to Alzheimer’s Society research, dementia is the condition we fear above all others. At present, there’s no cure, but scientists are working hard to find one, as well as investigating causes, prevention and treatment. However, there are various coping strategies for people living with dementia or caring for loved ones with the condition.

SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Memory loss is a key sign, but there’s a big difference between normal forgetfulness and dementia.

“Dementia is not part of normal ageing,” says Tim Beanland, head of knowledge management at Alzheimer’s Society.

“For those experiencing signs of dementia, symptoms are bad enough to affect daily life and include significant memory loss, problems with language and understanding, and changes in regular behaviour.”

Examples include getting lost in familiar surroundings, problems with everyday tasks, struggling to find words, repeating questions and forgetting people’s names.

GETTING A DIAGNOSIS

If you or a loved one does experience such symptoms, consult your GP. Being diagnosed is the key to unlocking the right treatment and support. In fact, one Alzheimer’s Society survey showed that three out of five people with dementia wished they had been diagnosed sooner.

“The specialist doctor who diagnoses a person with dementia will usually be able to tell what type of dementia a person has, by bringing together their clinical history, results of various pen-and-paper tests and often a brain scan,” explains Tim. “This is important, partly because medication is available for some types and not others. For example, drugs can help with Alzheimer’s symptoms for a while.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPITE

“Looking after a loved one with dementia can be emotionally and physically challenging, so it’s imperative to look after yourself,” says Tim. “Staying emotionally, physically and mentally healthy will allow you to better support the person with dementia and ensure you don’t burn out.’

Take a break – respite can be anything from an hour out for a coffee, to a break of a

Being a carer Caring for a loved one with dementia isn’t easy. But these tips can help you and them DON’T CORRECT SOMEONE

If your loved one is looking for their late mother, don’t say they passed away years ago. Instead, chat about their mum, look at photographs and share memories.

KEEP UP COMMUNICATION

When talking, get their full attention, talk in simple sentences, use facial expressions and body language, and don’t jump in, even if they’re struggling to find a word.

SCHEDULE IN ACTIVITIES

Help your loved one keep up old interests and try new ones, such as singing groups.

ENCOURAGE BETTER SLEEP

A familiar bedtime routine helps – for example, putting

This promotes sleep and reduces agitation – try a walk in the fresh air or some gardening.

‘We are the bank of family’

Danske Bank’s partnership with Benenden Health helps to put the health and wellbeing of its employees front and centre

One of the leading banks in Northern Ireland, Danske Bank prides itself on a contemporary and inclusive approach to wellness, which it is constantly developing in partnership with Benenden Health.

“We’re aiming to help both our colleagues and society,” says David Moore, digital learning and wellbeing consultant at Danske Bank. “We work in collaboration with colleagues and Benenden Health to ensure that we understand what matters to our staff, whatever their stage in life. Along with the usual emphasis on taking care of mental and physical health, life cycle is very important to us, as different things matter to people at different stages of their careers.”

All employees receive Benenden Health membership, but with around 1,300 members of staff, there’s no such thing as one size fits all. “If we want them to perform well, we need them to be well,” says David.

As he points out, behind the headlines are individuals. “We take a strategic approach to the data,” he says. “After Covid, 70% of UK adults suffered a mental health challenge, which means nearly 1,000 of our staff were affected. As well as health, caring responsibilities, bereavement, children’s milestones and a wide range of other issues can affect the five different generations we have in the workplace.”

A holistic healthcare model

Benenden Health has been Danske’s healthcare partner for six years. For David, who has been leading on the bank’s wellbeing strategy, this work is of the utmost importance.

“We don’t look at one component in isolation, but consider a full wellbeing

model, including triggers and coping mechanisms. We all have stressors daily and have a responsibility in working towards good mental health, both our own and others’. Benenden Health webinars explain different treatments and approaches so staff know exactly what to expect. After each one we do a review with those involved, and we’re getting really high numbers of staff having a good understanding of what Benenden Health does as well as feeling confident about contacting them. Staff also say they feel confident about speaking to managers and colleagues about any issues that might impact on their work, which is so encouraging.”

Orla King, senior manager HR, regards Danske Bank’s aims and culture as a good fit with its wellbeing approach. “Even as recently as 2008, when the financial crash

happened, wellbeing wasn’t part of many organisations’ culture,” she says. “Danske Bank wanted to take a holistic approach to mental and physical wellbeing, which was reflected early on in our social clubs, occupational health and charity partners, such as Cancer Focus NI and AWARE NI. It’s a win/win situation for everyone, as staff also volunteer and fundraise, while getting the benefit of these charities’ expertise.

reflects the training at every level and colleagues’ needs being met through good times and bad.”

Northern Ireland doesn’t have the Equality Act like the rest of the UK, so Danske Bank made a deliberate decision to look outwards at best practice. “We do it because it’s the best thing to do,” says Jenny Moore, employment lawyer HR, who has been instrumental in developing the bank’s latest wellbeing strategy, for staff experiencing menopause.

“We’re reassuring staff that we’re here for the long haul, which means supporting them through pregnancy loss, parental bereavement, domestic abuse, career breaks and now menopause.”

“In 2020 we were listed as A Best Place to Work and I think there are a number of key components to that. A focus on wellbeing helps to drive engagement, which leads to higher productivity. We are the bank of family, and when we asked what makes it a great place to work the responses included ‘Open communication from senior leadership’, ‘Effective line managers’ and ‘Looking after colleagues’, which

Danske Bank already had 10 days’ paid special leave in place to help with these situations, and in February 2022 it started working with colleagues and Benenden Health to develop a menopause strategy, which was implemented towards the end of the summer.

These measures include quiet reset spaces for colleagues to take time out to relax, fans on every floor, medical advice and care when needed from their Benenden Health membership and a desk-booking app to allow staff to choose where they sit. “Menopause leave won’t trigger any attendance concerns either,” says Jenny. “We tailor this to the individual, as we aim to do with any situation our staff face.”

David adds: “Supporting colleagues as individuals has never been more important to us. Our partnership helps ensure we’re a considerate, world-class company to work for, which is reflected in the consistent rise in uptake of Benenden Health services.”

The charity Medical Detection Dogs provides highly trained canine companions who can sniff out medical emergencies

Henry is a Medical Alert Assistance Dog for Lizzie, who has PoTS

Seven years ago, Lizzie Draper – who lives in West Sussex with her mum, dad and brother – was diagnosed with PoTS, or postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

“When I’m upright, standing or walking, my heart rate soars, my blood pressure drops and I black out,” she explains. “There’s no warning. I go over like a falling tree. On good days, it happens three or four times. On bad days, it’s 28 or 29.”

Symptoms started when Lizzie, now 27, was 16, and falls have caused cuts, bruises and concussions. “At school, I blacked out constantly, missing lessons. I was so behind, I did an extra year.”

Lizzie got to university. “But, studying animal science, I was in labs a lot – a dangerous place to black out without warning.” She had to give up. “I was stuck at home on the sofa, a prisoner to my body.”

Then one day, Lizzie was watching The Supervet on TV. “They were treating an epilepsy alert dog and I thought, could a dog be trained to alert me to my blackouts?”

She started researching – and found the charity Medical Detection Dogs (MDD).

“Our Medical Alert Assistance Dogs can smell when their client is about to become ill,” explains MDD’s Gemma Butlin. “For example, before having a serious hypo, someone with type 1 diabetes will smell different. Trained to detect this odourchange, dogs give a five to 10-minute warning by nudging, pawing, jumping or barking – enough time for their client to take medication or get to safety.”

Canine carers

MDD was set up in 2008, after animal behaviourist Claire Guest, now CEO, was diagnosed with breast cancer – discovered by her dog, Daisy. “Daisy kept nudging Claire in her chest area,” says Gemma. “Medical investigation found a deep-seated tumour. Without Daisy’s early warning, Claire wouldn’t have survived.”

Fifteen years on, MDD has proved that dogs can detect many cancers and other diseases. And, crucially for Lizzie, they train Medical Alert Assistance Dogs.

First, dogs live with a volunteer socialiser, doing basic training. “For 18 months, the dog comes everywhere with me – shops, hospitals, restaurants – learning to settle wherever we are,” says socialiser Marion. “The day my first dog, Ava, left was

Lizzie is in safe paws with labrador Henry, enabling her to finish university and live a full life

heart-breaking, but I knew she’d end up keeping someone safe from injury every day. Now I have my third dog, Kenny.”

Next, dogs are trained by a scent instructor. “Initially, instructors might hide a tennis ball, ask the dog to find it and give them a reward,” says Gemma. “When earmarked for a client, a dog is trained on the specific odour associated with an attack.”

“Meeting labrador Henry was like going on a first date,” laughs Lizzie. “But we bonded immediately. Then, when I had a debilitatingly high heart rate, I’d have to take breath or sweat samples, and friends or family took sweat samples from behind my ear during a blackout.” These were sent to MDD and placed among control samples. “Henry would sniff the samples, doing an alert behaviour on finding mine.”

Instructor Debra Church worked with Henry. “I’ve been doing this for 10 years and when newly placed dogs alert for the first time, it fills me with joy.”

In five years, Henry hasn’t missed one episode. “He even alerted me when he was with my brother in the garden and I was inside. He insisted on being let in.”

As walking brings repeated episodes, Lizzie uses a wheelchair. “But I’ve been standing on a train platform before, and if Henry hadn’t alerted me, I’d have fallen on to the tracks.” When an alert happens, Lizzie sits or lies down. “I can then be unconscious for several minutes. Henry watches over me until I come round.”

Life-changing companion

Conditions like PoTS are MDD’s priority. “Technology helps some conditions, but not PoTS,” says Gemma. “For our PoTS clients, our dogs are life-changing.”

That’s certainly true for Lizzie. “Since having Henry, I’ve not needed one ambulance for a blackout or blackoutrelated injury.” Crucially, he’s enabled her to get on with her life. “I went back to uni, finished studying and graduated.” She also goes out with friends without worrying. “Plus, Henry and I are going on our first trip abroad, to Disneyland Paris on Eurotunnel.”

Henry has changed Lizzie’s family’s lives too. “Initially, they had to learn to put their faith in Henry. Now they know I’m in safe paws.” When out with Henry, everybody asks about him. “People think he’s some magical being. And he is – he’s a superdog!”

Making your voice heard

As a mutual, we believe an important part of being a Benenden Health member is the opportunity to get involved

Members recently voted on a change that increases the opportunity for you to have a say. We’re now transitioning to a structure that gives you the power to influence change all year round and to get involved in person and online at a time that suits you.

Connect with other members

You’re part of a Benenden Health Community based on where you live. If you joined us before December 2022, you should have been told by letter or email which Community you belong to.

If you’ve forgotten or joined us since then, don’t worry, we’ve created a map opposite to help show where the 19 Benenden Health Communities are based. Each Community is managed by a group of volunteers and their role is to engage with you and your fellow members to make sure you are all kept informed and given the opportunity to share your views in different ways.

It might be that you have an idea for a new product or service that would make your Benenden Health membership even more valuable. We want to hear your ideas and your Benenden Health Community will be the quickest way to put them forward for the Board’s consideration.

We’ll soon be launching a brand-new online space where you can connect with other members by posting in forums, sharing tips and advice, voting in polls, watching videos from guest speakers, and having healthcare discussions with your fellow members.

If online isn’t for you, or if you want to see other members in person, you’ll be able to attend one of our Member Meetups

that will take place across the UK. At these events you can expect to hear from guest speakers who will talk about health and wellbeing topics, receive updates from Society representatives and learn more about how to make the most of your membership from our partners and so much more.

You’ll hear more about Benenden Health Communities, our new online platform and Member Meetups later this year.

Member Council –behind the scenes

Something else we’re excited about is our new Member Council, who’ll provide a two-way channel of communication between members and the Board of Directors. They will consider member ideas and when appropriate forward them to the Board and consult with their Benenden Health Community on Board proposals, gathering your views and feeding them back to the Board.

The first meeting of the Member Council took place on Wednesday 18 January 2023 in York, with every Benenden Health Community represented. It was a packed

Some of the representatives on our new Member Council

agenda and a common theme was the responsibility of the Council to represent the views of members and Communities focusing largely on healthcare and the Society’s services. Bob Andrews, Chief Executive Officer, introduced the key themes for 2023, which are instrumental in making sure Benenden Health is a Mutual for Tomorrow.

To find out more about our Member Council, visit benenden.co.uk/have-yoursay/the-member-council

DIRECT MEMBER VOTING –HOW IT WORKS

Don’t miss out! You’ll soon be invited to cast your vote on the key decisions for the Society. You will receive your 2023 Voting Pack in May with all the information you need to make your vote count!

The voting results will be announced at our Annual Conference on Friday 23 June where Community Representatives will also gather to discuss health and wellbeing, our services and plans for the future.

Can I please recommend that readers consider contacting, and if it’s beneficial to them, joining their local Men’s Sheds or Community Sheds (some Sheds, but not all, are mixed, even if they still use the established ‘Men’s’ title).

Following a spinal injury, I had to close my business and experienced many months of recuperation with all the mental and physical issues and problems that came with it, as well as the pressure it put on my wonderful wife. I’ve now been a member of my local Shed for nearly four years and can definitely say it has benefited me hugely.

★★★

I recently had bloods taken for a range of tests and was able to access my medical records online to see that two of my cholesterol markers are abnormally high. I fully expect to be called to the surgery soon to discuss treatment.

The day after reading my results, Be Healthy (issue 61) landed on the doormat, complete with comprehensive advice on the foods that I should be enjoying or avoiding. I cut out the page, laminated it and attached it to a kitchen cupboard. My stress levels over the results have been quickly managed because I can see at a glance how I can start to address the issue immediately. Thank you.

including accounts of men, of or around retirement age (although some of us are younger), who say it literally saved their life, with men who were suffering mentally, for various reasons including bereavement, and were close to suicide.

Trips to the Shed every week are now firmly part of my social diary and somewhere I enjoy going. I’ve learnt new skills in woodworking, been able to give a little something back (making items for schools, hospitals, care homes, Scouts etc), and made some good friends… and still enjoy a cuppa while putting the world to rights.

Underpressure

Being young, particularly an adolescent, isn’t easy. You are expected to navigate new expectations and responsibilities, all while your hormones rage and your body changes. Add to this pressure from social media, bombarding them with images of perfect bodies and lives, it’s little wonder that around 50% of children are thought to have mental health problems, according to some surveys. Figures from UCAS last year show the number of prospective students declaring mental health conditions on their university application forms has soared by 450% in the past decade.

Youngsters feel under increasing pressure to conform to online images of supposed beauty, pushing some to diet. For those who are psychologically susceptible, this can develop into an eating disorder. Others, inundated with images of bulging biceps and chiselled abs, are becoming obsessed with the gym and even

taking anabolic steroids. It is a disgrace that more is not being done to force social media companies to take responsibility. In no other area would a company be allowed to provide a product that has demonstrably caused harm in this way, and yet do so little to prevent it.

It’s not just eating disorders and body image issues either. When I worked in adolescent mental health, I saw countless youngsters who had started self-harming as a direct result of viewing images glamorising cutting. Teenage angst is now almost fetishised online, with youngsters vying to outdo each other in who is the most depressed, morose and nihilistic.

Social media also contributes to mental health problems in more subtle ways. With the carefully posed photographs and inspirational posts depicting a ‘perfect life’, youngsters are developing a warped view of the world, finding their lives coming up short compared with what they see on social media. Many youngsters think they have ‘depression’ when in fact they are just experiencing the normal ups and downs of life.

Many celebrities have spoken out about their struggles with mental health, which has increased awareness and encouraged people to seek help. However, it has also created another phenomenon. Colleagues speak about how they are inundated with referrals from those with mild symptoms who have become convinced they have a mental illness.

If we are going to tackle this epidemic of mental health problems, we need to ensure there are adequate resources for those who are experiencing a real mental illness while talking about the realities of life to help all young people develop resilience to its difficulties.

The negative aspects of social media are hard to police, but we can encourage youngsters to limit their exposure to social media and keep reminding them that much of what they see is only a highly edited version of reality.
