Welcome to our January edition of Thinklocal Magazine. Let us start off by saying Happy New Year to you all. We hope that you have enjoyed the nonnormal Christmas we have all experienced and that you managed to see your loved ones over the festive period.

The prospect of the vaccine in the first quarter of 2021 being rolled out to the masses gives reason for optimism that the Spring will be better, hopefully in the year ahead we will be able to enjoy some of the events and holidays that we all love to do, even if we are still wearing a mask. Let us all keep our fingers crossed that some sense of normality isn’t too far over the horizon.

Last month we reported on the opening of the Magic Garden and Earth Pods that Crosshall Nursery were enjoying. On the front cover we reported it as Crosshall Junior school by mistake, our apologies for this.

Gardening & Friendships Little Paxton Gardening Club “Where gardening and friendships blossom” Little Paxton Gardening Club will be holding 2 Zoom meetings early next year On Wednesday 20th January at 8pm we will hold on Zoom a club social for members only possibly to include suggestions for future outings and events programme for 2021 and a general get together and chat between members.

On Wednesday 3rd of February, a talk at 8pm. The talk will be by Gwenda Kyd. The subject will be People, plants, Molecules, Medicine and Mischief, Gwenda is a scientist and complementary medicine practitioner who’s main

interest is in plants and how to use them. She has written 2 books on the subject. Free to members and open to visitors for £2.

We hope to hold a Zoom talk during March and April to keep in touch with as many members as possible and meet some new ones. Like all clubs we are dependent on guidance from the Government.

Ducks and Drakes

How many different types of duck can you spot at Paxton Pits?

We are all familiar with the mallard, our commonest duck, which is found on rivers, ponds and lakes everywhere. But there are many other species of duck to be seen in the UK, especially in the winter, when thousands come over from Northern Europe to take advantage of our milder weather.

Of course, not all mallards look the same. As with many species of duck, the male (drake) mallard is much more brightly coloured than the female.

Mallards are “dabbling ducks”; they search for food by tipping upside down, with their heads in the water and their tails sticking up in the air. This means they can’t reach the bottom of deep ponds and lakes and so they are usually found in shallow water, near the edge.

Another group of ducks are the “diving ducks”.

The one you are most likely to see at Paxton Pits is the tufted duck. It’s the black-and-white one: at least the male is; the female is as usual, much duller. Next time you see one, watch how it behaves. You’ll soon notice that it regularly dives completely underwater and disappears for a

short while before popping up a few metres away.

That’s why it’s called a diving duck and that’s why it can reach food much further below the surface of the water. You can find diving ducks on deep lakes and gravel pits.

Some mallards and tufted ducks live at Paxton Pits all year round and you have probably seen them with ducklings in the spring and summer.

However, in the winter many more arrive, along with several other types of duck. Some are dabblers; for example, the colourful wigeon and tiny teal; some are divers, like the pochard.

So next time you visit the Pits, take a closer look at the ducks and see if you spot some of our winter visitors. A simple fire safety check list can help you avoid an unnecessary fire in your home Simple tips, simply STOP the chance of a fire.

• NEVER overload sockets: Multi-socket adapters, often used in homes to provide more plug sockets quickly and easily, are particularly popular during the winter period when people are more likely to plug in heating devices, lights, and other items. If used incorrectly however, these can be extremely dangerous and cause an electrical fire through overloading the socket. ‘One appliance, one socket’ is the

Bushmead Primary School

Happy New Year! I hope that you have all had a lovely Christmas with your families, despite the ongoing restrictions.

At the time of writing this article, the first Covid vaccinations were taking place. This gives me hope that we will be able to return to normality before the end of this school year and then do what we do so well here at Bushmead and educate our children with an experience rich curriculum. Despite the inventiveness of our teaching staff during the Covid restrictions, to ensure the children learn and enjoy their lessons, it will be so good to be able to take our children out and about to places of interest and even to think about the residential trips that normally take place. As we have our own minibus at Bushmead, during normal times we take our children out and about to many places. These, in the past, have included free visits to London, to the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum, visits to Cambridge and also visits to places in and around the local area. It is so reassuring to have a light at the end of the tunnel and to start to think about these events again.

Whilst we have learned a lot about using technology to communicate with our parents and others in the locality, it will also be so good to open our doors again to the local community. We have many local businesses that hire our facilities,

volunteers and governors who come into school to help our children, and also to be able to have the concerts and events in school that we normally host. Sporting Hero’s

St Neots Sporting Hero’s If you are thinking of taking up a new sport or joining an exercise class this January you will be in good company as St Neots has a proud sporting heritage that is celebrated at the museum with displays about some of the town’s sporting heroes.

Until the industrial revolution of the early 1800s everyday life was strenuous enough to keep most working people fit.

However, as jobs involving manual labour declined the idea of men getting together to enjoy organised team games grew in popularity.

When the Reverend Maule became the vicar of Eynesbury in 1851 a talented and experienced sportsman arrived in the town. He excelled at cricket and rowing, and while at Trinity College, Cambridge he had been President of the Trinity Boat Club. By 1865 he had established St Neots Rowing Club which produced many fine rowers including Laurie Evans, who was a member of many winning crews in the 1920s and 1930s. Another talented sportsman who threw himself into the sporting life of the town was C.G. Tebbutt who moved to the town in 1889.

Not only was he a gifted skater and ice hockey (bandy) player he also captained both the football club and cricket club at different times in the 1890s. The St Neots Cycling Club formed in 1887 and the early champion of the club was E. J. Bass of Eynesbury who was a rider of national importance. The photograph shows him with his trophies in 1899 after he had won several prestigious races.

More recent sporting heroes include footballer, John Gregory, of Longsands school who played for England in the 1983 – 84 season and hockey player, Tony Ekins, who twice played for England at the Olympic Games, 1968 & 1972.

Women were also keen sports players, but found it much harder to break into the world of organised sports. Although Eaton Socon Ladies’ Hockey Club formed in late 1898 and by 1894 St Neots Golf Club (founded 1890) was holding a Ladies Monthly Prize competition.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY HEALTH & WELFARE

F

or many years there has been the Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) document appointing Attorneys to look after someone’s financial arrangements.

However, some Attorneys mistake these as including all aspects of life, including Health & Welfare issues, but in fact are restricted to only deal with the finances of an individual.

When Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s) were introduced to replace EPA’s it was decided that there should be two types, Property & Financial and Health & Welfare, to help support Attorneys who find they need to deal with Health & Welfare issues of an individual; often quite unexpectedly.

There was a story in the news recently regarding a daughter who tried to take her 97 year old mum out

of a care home to care for her herself, as she had not been able to see her mum during the pandemic. But the daughter was arrested and the elderly mum was returned to the home. This is sadly not an isolated case. Over the years people have had similar problems and have also found themselves in Court.

There are proper procedures to follow as the Care Home are legally responsible for the welfare of their residents and the assigned Social Worker will help with the procedures.

It is important to remember that the rules are there to protect the vulnerable.

It is important when considering making Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) whether or not there is the slightest possibility of your Attorneys having to make decisions about your health, care and general welfare.

It is easier and better in the long run to make both LPAs at the same time.

You do not have to have the same Attorneys, but the important facts are that you have made the choice of who makes decisions for you at a time when you still are able to do so, as LPAs can only be made while you still have capacity to make decisions and cannot be done after this time.

ARE YOU A RABBIT, A SLOTH OR A MEERKAT?

W

e are the product of our behaviours and it can be difficult to change, even if you want to.

For many they will be happy as they are, regardless of what change could achieve. It’s not my place to make people change, I can, however, help if that’s what people want.

So let’s look at the three types listed in the title above: A Rabbit can be fast moving but often isn’t. They stick to what they know and, although sometimes inquisitive, can become blinded by the headlights of information.

A Sloth does very little. They are happy in their own world and don’t really care what’s going on around them. They do as little as possible and could be described as one of life’s plodders. They are consistent and reliable.

A Meerkat sits up straight and looks around into the distance to evaluate their surroundings, then settles down to get involved in the task at hand. Constantly aware of what’s needed to react to a situation, and preparing in advance.

I prefer to think of myself as a meerkat. There are times when my wife may think of me as more of a sloth, but certainly a meerkat in business, and like a meerkat, I am surrounded by other meerkat’s at Beacon.

Town Centre Initiative by John Davies

Hello everyone, Happy New Year and boy do we need a happy 2021, after the awful roller coaster 2020. A lot of people seem to have learnt to live by the rules and keep living and working. Many NHS staff, care workers and essential workers have had to keep working and accept the risks. Even basics like bin collections have been done so we all owe a lot to these people who kept things going regardless.

But we must not forget those who were isolated or fell through the holes of the care system or gaps in the many financial aid schemes that were desperately needed but not perfect in their application. As we enter the huge vaccine roll outs, we can perhaps see a new normal where we will all have to have a hard think about how we do things and look after each other. As we go forward, we have to live with the impact of Brexit and then the way we address the Climate Change challenge. That is quite a mix. As an ancient I cannot remember such challenging times.

As an Initiative we have had a long 20-year relationship with our Town’s retail sector but never have we seen such problems for this important sector and all the jobs they provide. The supermarkets and some other have actually done well but

many have suffered from the pandemic lock downs and footfall falling as people limit their going out to just shopping for essentials. This has accelerated a trend to buy online that was already happening.

If things get back to normal this pattern may not revert, so we have a High Street problem to add to the others mentioned above. Historically Town Centre served the centre of the Town’s population and anyone who rode a horse and cart in. With the car people moved out and drove in and the Town Centre became ghost towns at night, apart from pubs and entertainment.

The out of -Town stores started the decline and then new technology allowed on-line shopping. The pandemic has put us in a whole new place.

The District Council are promoting a ‘Think Local’ campaign. Funds are being created

by Central Government to make Town Centre is more attractive and for housing to repopulate Town Centre’s. We can only hope the support is sufficient it works!
