This Easter would have seen the 3rd performance of the St Neots Passion Play on the streets of St Neots. It is with deep regret that this has now been cancelled due to the current health crisis, see page 40 for more information.

We have some uncertain times ahead, please support your local businesses as much as possible, as they will need the local community more than ever over the coming months. COVID-19

COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a virus called coronavirus.

Stay at home if you have either: a high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back, a new, continuous cough – this means you’ve started coughing repeatedly Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. You do not need to contact 111 to tell them you’re staying at home. Testing for coronavirus is not needed if you’re staying at home.

How long to stay at home? if you have symptoms, stay at home for 7 days, if you live with other people, they should stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person got symptoms, If you live with someone who is 70 or over, has a long-term condition, is pregnant or has a weakened immune system, try to find somewhere else for them to stay for 14 days. If you have to stay at home together, try to keep away from each other as much as possible.

Urgent advice: Use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service if: you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, your condition gets worse, your symptoms do not get better after 7 days How to avoid catching and spreading coronavirus (social distancing) Everyone should do what they can to stop coronavirus spreading. It is particularly important for people who: are 70 or over, have a longterm condition, are pregnant, have a weakened immune system.

Do • Wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds • Always wash your hands when you get home or into work • Use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

• Put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards • Avoid close contact with people who have symptoms of coronavirus • Only travel on public transport if you need to • Work from home, if you can • Avoid social activities, such as going to pubs, restaurants, theatres and cinemas • Avoid events with large groups of people • Use phone, online services, or apps to contact your GP surgery or other NHS services

One of the sons of St. Neots

It is with great pleasure that we can tell the story of one of the sons of St. Neots, Squadron Leader Victor Ekins DFC. Victor was born at 28 New Street and lived there until the outbreak of war. He made a huge contribution locally throughout his life but is probably best known for the contribution he made 80 years ago during one of the hardest fought and most important air battles in history- The Battle of Britain. Victor Ekins was transferred to 501 squadron and on 27th September 1940 had a miraculous escape on his first combat mission with the squadron.

After climbing to engage enemy bombers at 15,000 feet, they were set upon by 20 Bf110s and Victors Hurricane was attacked.

His aircraft was shot up with a bullet passing through his body, out of his stomach and smashing into the controls of the Hurricane!

Victor took to his parachute in a very bad way but miraculously landed in a Canadian field hospital who immediately gave him the medical care he needed. He was back in the firing line with 501 within just 8 weeks (!) and in 1943 went on to command 19 Squadron.

Victor was a people’s person and a privileged look at his wartime diary proves it as his personality jumps from each page.

Respected by both his superiors as well as the chaps he commanded; Victor Ekins

was there to do his duty when his country needed him most.

This year is the 80th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain and we are so proud that St Neots has one of Churchill’s ‘Few’ whom we can call our own. In these uncertain times, how reassuring it is to be reminded of a generation who rose to a global challenge with such dignity, unity, courage and resilience.

HCCN Huntingdonshire’s Best Kept Secret Transforming Cancer Care in the Community Hunts (HCCN) is a partnership between an NHS funded nursing service and a charity. We support people (over 18) across Huntingdonshire through their cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. We are there for the person with cancer and for their partners and family.

Our team of skilled HCCN Oncology Nurses visit people at home, at work, in the hospital or somewhere neutral for a cup of coffee if necessary! They help to reduce the amount of time spent sitting in clinics and in hospital admissions. They keep our patient’s symptom-free. They help them to hold on to feeling of normality through difficult times.

HCCN the Charity aims to help people who are recovering from or living with cancer to play an active part in managing their health.

We offer programmes to support lifestyle changes, focusing on exercise and nutrition, education and wellbeing. All are needed to promote long term health.

We support people with the emotional side of coping with cancer, including counselling, where 1 to 1 support is needed. Programmes of gentle massage, art therapy and sleep courses are all designed to help heal the emotions.

The Charity offers a range of exercise activities including Yoga, Tai Chi, Boules and

Walks & Talks. We have a number of social drop-in groups that meet regularly. We also have available nutritional advice.

We know that doing things together helps the healing process. As does knowing that you matter, that you aren’t alone and that you are not the only one to feel this way.

As your local volunteer-led charity, we are wholly dependent on your support to enable the nursing service to do more for our patients in the community. For example, we fund specialist training in ancillary and valuable skills and therapies which can help with side effects of chemotherapy plus we provided them with mobile phones to stay in touch with patients remotely. Eaton Socon Cricket Club Eaton Socon cricket club is a local social club based in Eaton Socon .

We run junior teams at under 9-15s and girls teams at under 11-13s .

We run 3 senior sides who play at weekends .

We are always looking for people to come and support the club during the summer and the licensed bar will be open .

The club is expecting an exciting summer in 2020 so please pop along to the club .

We are also running a family Easter Day on Friday 10th April at the cricket club with bouncy castles etc Eaton Socon Cricket Club are looking for sponsors for the 2020 season. We run three senior teams and various youth sides from ages under 9 to under 19.

We offer one board for £250 and two boards for £350.

In return for this, we supply the boards around the ground from April to October, a sponsors’ day during the summer and an advert in the fixture book and ESCC programme.

We have travelling players, officials, and parents from across various counties, including Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire, giving your company lots of easy exposure. We also play in the national village cup which is a nationwide event, with the final held at Lords.

VJ Day event

On Friday 8th May this year the museum will be commemorating the end of World War II with a VE and VJ Day event to mark the 75th anniversary of the original Victory in Europe and Victory in Japan Days in 1945. After over five long years of war, on the 8th May 1945, the entire population of Europe prepared to celebrate the end of the fighting, even as they mourned all those who had died or been injured or traumatised.

The local paper, the St Neots Advertiser, reported details of the many celebrations that took place in the town and the surrounding villages. In St Neots the paper reported “An outward sign of rejoicing was a profuse display of flags …Russell Street was a specially high spot. Church bells rang merrily in St Neots, Eynesbury and Eaton Socon” Church services were held throughout the day and the paper reported “joyous scenes on St Neots Market Square on VE night” loud speakers had been installed on the square and dancing to popular tunes continued in to the early hours. The re-formed Eynesbury and St Neots Town Silver

Prize band, paraded the town and played on the Market Square. Although at 9.00pm a hush fell as the “immense crowd” listened to the speech by H.M. the King.

Lights in the darkness must have been a particular pleasure after five years of the night time black-out. Little Barford power station was floodlight and could be seen for many miles around. Many other buildings were also floodlit in celebration.

In Great Gransden the paper reported that ‘Hundreds of people assembled in the Cricket Field in the afternoon to hear Mr. Churchill’s broadcast of the end of war in Europe,….

In the evening it was estimated over 1,000 people were on the field where an open-air dance was held.’ In Waresley the village was gaily decorated and a dance took place on the Tuesday evening and on the Wednesday tea and sports were held in Mr. A. Minney’s meadow.

In the same newspaper under the heading “News of our Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen” appeared reports of men who were returning home after being held as Prisoners of War. The Museum is still looking for photographs and memories of St Neots 1939 – 45, so if you have any information please do get in touch with the museum. We can scan and return photograph so precious family items do not need to be donated to the museum. Investments Coronavirus and the Financial Markets There are many people far more qualified to advise on Coronavirus than me, but most will know little of how this affects your finances.

At the time of writing, UK and World cases are increasing and there is no sign of a cure.

World production has been hit with China almost closing its boarders to imports and exports as well as incurring reduced consumption.

China is the 3rd largest market so what affects them affects most people.

Tourism has slowed dramatically impacting many companies, small and large, as demand for goods and services are decimated in some sectors.

How does this affect the Stock Market?

All the above affects stock market companies and their share price suffers.

There has been some selling of equity stocks in favour of Government Bonds, but most investors have remained unchanged. A cure is unlikely within the next 3 – 4 months, which will lead to a continued downward pressure on shares, but investments into shares are long term investments and when the market bounce happens you could lose out significantly if you have sold out.

Clearly I didn’t have advanced warning about Coronavirus, just as I don’t know what’s going to happen to the markets going forward, but what I do know is that markets are much lower today than they were at the end of January, so I will be hoping to take advantage of this.

I may be a Chartered Wealth Manager with a highly experienced investment team who continue to produce way above average returns, but even I don’t know if it’s the right time to invest, I just know it’s better to invest when markets are down…….

They could go lower, but as I said earlier it’s better to be in the markets than out, and trying to time the markets is nigh on impossible.

Town Centre Initiative by John Davies

The world does get more and more complicated as we go along. Years of Brexit are now followed by the coronavirus situation. As I write we are waiting to see what happens with no meetings being planned at the moment and those that are planned are being kept under review with all the respective group members now in regular email contact looking at issues as they arrive and feeding back comments.

News from the County Council of the cancellation of the Northern Pedestrian/ Cycle Bridge was one such issue, discussed under the current process this discussion included looking at the large amounts of money already spent, seemingly from the Section 106 money from developers that is meant to benefit the Town. There was another bridge route that some of us favoured i.e. from the busy Riverside Car Park across to the corner of the Market Square and we have asked if some of the earlier planning /spending could be reconfigured for this route. This was considered, I think, as a lower cost option favoured originally by the Combined Authorities’ own consultants. Another issue looked at was a press report that the Wintringham Brook, on the Wintringham Park Development, was to be diverted for an access road. The Brook is part of the environmental strategy where two brooks

will be green corridors on the site. The developers were contacted and denied the story and said they would take the matter up with the paper concerned.

We did have our Manufacturing Club meeting at Wyboston Lakes and enjoyed their usual friendly and professional support. One speaker spoke about a project in the North West, around Liverpool. This will convert a former oil refinery to make hydrogen. Current technology means using a lot of fossil fuel to make hydrogen which itself can be used as carbon free energy so quite a contradiction. In the future they hope to refine a new technology that will not create this strange situation. For now, they get around this issue by capturing the carbon and piping it into the Irish Sea into an old undersea oil field. The hydrogen produced will be piped mainly to local industry in a mix of 20% hydrogen and the rest natural gas to trial this idea that will reduce carbon emissions. I am out of words so I will say more next time on where the hydrogen project will take us. And I have not even mentioned our nuclear fusion presentation.

April Fools Day April can be a great month for showery weather as the weather rhyme reminds us but the first day can also be interesting for inventive well thought out pranks.

Who recalls the finding of St Neot’s bones in a cellar in the Cross Keys? The news article noted that these bones had been lost for hundreds of years and had been found in what was once part of St Neots Priory. The discovery was even mentioned on local TV programmes a few days later! It was a while before some people realised that the original find had been announced on April Fools Day! One year there was an article in the local papers about the decision to have a road in a tunnel under Grafham Water Reservoir between Grafham and Perry linking up the two roads that go into the water but once crossed the land and went over a stream in the valley.

Blue Peter, the children’s TV programme, many years ago announced that new tablets had been created that turned into water when exposed to sunlight. It was noted that these would be a life saver in drought areas but on

a news clip the programme had reported that a lorry carrying a large number of tablets had been involved in an accident and the nearby village had been badly flooded. Photographs were shown of the severe flooding! Many children believed this and were very concerned about the villagers!

In the late 1970s one radio station reported that an aircraft was flying over England and a prize would be given to someone who phoned in with the numbers written on the wings.

Housewives and workers popped outside to take the number on aircraft flying around and there were phone calls from many parts of the country indicating that the plane was flying either very fast or there was more than one plane.

Looking at church registers we can find people born, baptised and married on April Fools Day – did they have pranks played on them during their lives? What can you remember of pranks from your childhood?

When did this day of pranks begin – no-one knows – it has been happening for centuries and it is harmless fun so why not look on social media on April Fools Day and see what you can find that is a fun piece of news!

Our wonderful nature reserve

Looking west from Great Paxton village, you cannot fail to spot our wonderful nature reserve, nestling by the side of the River Great Ouse. We are 30 years old this year and offer visitors a rich mosaic of wildlife habitat just waiting for you to explore.

Consisting of some 200 acres of lakes, riverside meadows, reed beds, scrub and mixed woodland, it is little wonder that the Reserve owned by Huntingdonshire District Council and financially supported by our own charity, “The Friends of Paxton Pits Nature Reserve” supports a rich range of wildlife. This includes 160 plus species of birds with about 60 breeding, 300 plus species of fungi and 600 different kinds of moths and butterflies. The

Our 10Km of easy walking nature trails are just part of a much wider network of paths that link with the long-distance Ouse Valley Way. Depending upon the availability of our volunteers, the Centre is open every day except Christmas Day from 10 am to 4.30 pm for light refreshments, information about the Reserve and membership of The Friends.

Our local Wildlife Trust has a busy Environmental Education Centre nearby which is staffed to cater for younger visitors.

If you have never visited us, this is an ideal time – even if only to enjoy the great autumnal colours that are showing all over the Reserve.

St Neots Passion Play

It is with deep regret that St Neots Christian Performing Arts – after prayerful consideration - have concluded that we should cancel the St Neots Passion Play which was scheduled to be performed in the Town Centre on Easter Sunday (April 12th). Although this date is still 4 weeks away, this decision was made now for the following reasons: • That there is a strong likelihood that large outdoor gatherings will be banned over the coming weeks

• Many projections show that the Easter period is the time when we reach the ‘peak’ of the COVID 19 virus.

• That whilst we are keen to share the great news of Jesus’s Passion, and the first Easter, we would not want the re-telling of this story to bring any further risk to public health; either to performers, spectators, or those working on the production.

• That we wish to minimise the wasted effort and expenditure that would be necessitated by a later cancellation, and avoid the disruption and upset caused by a last minute decision.

We apologise for any disappointment caused by this decision. Over the coming weeks we shall examine the financial implications to us of this postponement and be looking at options for putting the play on at an alternative time.

We would like to place on record our thanks to the following:

• Our actors, dancers, singers and musicians who have been working tirelessly over the last 3 months to prepare for the production;

• The local churches and councils for the support they have given;

• Simon Leher and Phil Barrett for the design and photography work they have selflessly offered over recent weeks.

Chocolate Easter eggs Many pet owners are now aware that chocolate is poisonous for dogs – but why?

The main danger in chocolate is a substance called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine. A relatively small amount of chocolate can affect our pets, it is all dependant on quantity and the pet’s weight. Different types of chocolate have varying amounts of theobromine. The rule is the higher the cocoa solids the higher the level of theobromine, (so cooking chocolate is the most dangerous and white chocolate the least). Chocolate also contains sugars and fats which our pets can’t metabolise as well as we can.

Chocolate poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, panting, uncoordinated movement, seizures and irregular heart rhythm. In large doses it can be fatal. As little as 60g of cooking chocolate could be fatal for a 10kg dog!

Although dogs are far more likely to sniff out and eat those hidden Easter eggs, chocolate is also poisonous for cats!

Hot Cross Buns These Easter buns traditionally contain raisins, currants or sultanas and these (along with the raw fruit – grapes) are all poisonous to dogs. It affects the kidneys, and in the worst cases, it causes life-threatening kidney failure.

At the moment it is not known how these fruits harm the kidneys and dogs appear to have varying reactions.

Some dogs can somehow eat whole bunches without a problems and others eat just a few and develop irreversible kidney failure. Due to this unpredictability and the possible severe consequences we recommend no dogs are fed grapes, raisins, currants or sultanas and no matter how much has been consumed they are seen by a Vet. flowers are toxic to our pets and can cause a variety of symptoms. Daffodils are one such plant and the bulbs are the biggest danger. Signs include drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. In severe cases it can affect the heart and breathing of the animal too.

St Neots litter minimisation pilot

Huntingdonshire District Council has chosen St Neots as the first market town in the district to have recycling ‘on the go’ bins installed in the town centre, in a bid to support ongoing environmental project goals and the Council’s green agenda commitments.

Following evaluation of; the efficiency of existing waste disposal facilities and surveys on footfall, usage and location, 11 recycling stations have been set up for trial. Consideration was also taken by looking at litter hotspots. Quarterly surveys are to follow to identify whether there has been a reduction in the volume of waste to landfill and the ability to monitor the volume of street recycling – indicators of public behaviour changes.

The new bins – which aim to turn litter into recycling and ensuring litter ends up in the ‘correct’ bin comprise of containers for cans, plastic bottles and general waste in the following locations:

• High Street • Moores Walk Following a successful pilot, the Council aims to expand into other areas of the town.

Councillor Ryan Fuller, Executive Leader said: “This is a great opportunity for St Neots to trailblaze street recycling. Currently, no litter is recycled from on-street bins and it is estimated that 55-65% of litter within high street general waste bins is recyclable, so we hope to start capitalising on this great opportunity.

“By installing the additional bins across the town centre, this pilot will provide an increase of over

40% in waste and recycling capacity throughout the high street.”

Mayor of St Neots, Councillor Gordon Thorpe, said: “I’m thrilled St Neots has been selected as the pilot location for this project. By working collaboratively alongside the District Council, I’m positive we’ll achieve success by focussing efforts on more than just the traditional methods of responding to litter.”

In line with Corporate Strategic Plan objectives, is a vision to support a safe and healthy environment by making Huntingdonshire a better place to live, work and invest. This project underpins part of the council’s agenda that focuses on social responsibility and pride of place under new ‘Love Huntingdonshire’ branding.
