IN SEPTEMBER WE CELEBRATED MY FATHER’S 70TH BIRTHDAY. (I’M GETTING OLD!!) The month was also packed to the brim with sports, back to school activities and settling into the post-summer groove. Needless to say, it’s a busy time here. I know you can relate! When my dad’s big day was less than a week away, I had yet to put together a gift. I wasn’t at a total loss, though. I knew what I wanted to do. As the days approached my head was swimming with ideas. Folding laundry would bring one bit of an idea; loading the dishwasher another. And then walking the aisles of my craft store brought the final inspiration and sealed the deal. You see, my dad was going to be in the South on his special day with his brother and some great friends. But the rest of our family would not be there to celebrate. So why not bring us to him. Heaven forbid I pop a picture in a frame and send it on its merry way. I mean, I had a brainwave! And when one hits (and let’s be honest, it ain’t that often!) you’ve got to go with it. It was going to be a hectic couple of days to get my project done in time to overnight ship but I guess that’s the way it goes when you wait until the last minute. I thought about abandoning the project and just sending a picture frame but come on, where’s the fun in that? WHERE AM I GOING WITH ALL THIS YOU ASK AND WHAT IN THE WORLD DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH OUR GARNISH WORKBOOK? Let me tell you a little something about that birthday gift I created. Yes, it took a little time. Yes, the dust bunnies nibbled a couple of extra days on my floors. Yes, I put the power of my dishwasher detergent to test from neglected dishes. But here’s the thing. He loved the surprise gift. Everyone at the party thought it was great fun having the rest of his family there. And I had a deliriously beyond giddy time putting it all together. It was far from perfect and let’s just say you could definitely tell it was homemade. I was laughing at myself for laughing at my creation. I know, I know, what can I say? I live on the corner of giddy and geek!

Tie up the bag with some twine.

Make it your own! This is what we packed for our friend, but you could swap out anything here for some of your hostess’s favorite treats.... how about mini-donuts? A fruit cup? Maybe some greek yogurt? OK, we’re hungry now!
The game plan: 1.
Prep my labels on kraft paper... about 8.5" x 2" is the right size.
2.
Empty the instant cereal into the soup container and pop on the lid.
3.
Fill the plastic bottle with juice and screw on the lid.
4.
Pop some granola into the glassine bag and staple it shut.
5.
Use some bakery twine to tie a teabag to the granola.
6.
Place the mini bagels in the cellophane bag and secure with twine.
7.
Everything goes in the squat gable box. Add the label, and tie the handle with a final twist of twine.

a little something for the kids AAAHHH.... THE HOLIDAYS. FOR MANY OF US, ALL IT TAKES IS THE MENTION OF “FAMIILY THANKSGIVING” AND IN OUR MIND’S EYE WE SEE... THE KIDS’ TABLE! Remember the kids’ table? When we were growing up, we were relegated to our grandparents’ coffee table, and got to indulge in mini glasses of ginger ale (oh, the luxury!). But that was about the extent of the kids’ table festivities. Today, we think the experience can benefit from a little Garnish. After all, you’re only young once!

a little this or that. DO YOU KNOW WHEN WE HAD OUR “AHA” MOMENT? WHEN WE SAW HOW THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA (A.K.A INA GARTEN) PACKAGED UP LEFTOVERS FOR HER GUESTS TO TAKE HOME. She didn’t put them in Tupperware. She didn’t use plastic baggies. She used deli containers. We were delighted, and a business was born! That “this or that” philosophy is what drives Garnish. It only takes a moment to turn the ordinary (OK, our scalloped potatoes are a little more than ordinary... they’re delicious!) into the extraordinary. And we think celebrating those moments is part of what makes this season so special.

2 pounds thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 cu ps)
3 Tbsp butter or ma rgarine
3 Tbsp all-purpose flo ur
1 tsp salt (or to ta ste) 1/2 tsp pepper (or to taste)
2 1/2 cups milk
1 small onion, finely ch opped 1 Tbsp butter or ma rgarine
BORROW THIS RECIPE!
Preheat oven to 325.
Heat 3 Tbsps of butt er in saucepan over low heat until melted. Stir in flo ur, salt and pepper. Co ok over low heat, stirring const antly, until mixture is smooth and bubbly. Remove fr om heat, stir in milk. Heat to boiling, stirring con stantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Arrange potatoes in 2-quart greased ca sserole in 3 layers, topping each with 1/3 of the onions and sauce Dot with 1 Tb sp butter. Cover and bake 40 minutes. Uncover and continue baking for 45 minutes or until potat oes are tender. Let stand 5 to 10 minuts before serving. garnish workbook • 2012

Everything’s cute when it’s mini! We used a mini scoop to form our adorable (we told you we live on the corner of giddy and geek!) little dough balls (similar to this one from Williams Sonoma).
These Joy of Cooking chocolate chip cookies are our fave! Preheat the oven to 375. Grease or line two cookie sheets.
