go ahead... jump into summer! [ because if I can do it, anyone can do it! ] I’M GOING TO LET YOU IN ON A LITTLE SECRET. I’M NOT EXACTLY THE JUMPING OFF THE DOCK TYPE. In fact, I’m perfectly content to sit in a comfy lounger and soak up the sun, while my boys show off their cannonballs and helicopter jumps. It’s my happy place! But I’m not going to make summer memories sitting in my chair, am I? So every once in a while, I grab a lifejacket (to soften the blow of that cold, cold water!) and jump right in.

It’s early July as I sit down to write this note, and I’m already dreaming of heading back to the cottage in a few weeks. As you saw in our photo collage on Page 1, my family has a serious love of a summer spent outdoors (and yes, my boys pioneered our tradition of dock-jumping in lifejackets). My grandmother looks so chic in her shorts. Were my parents ever that impossibly young? And check out my sister Catherine’s “Mork from Ork” suspenders. Such a blast from the past!

Does it help that the cold, cold water is at my family’s beloved cottage in Muskoka, Ontario? And that the sun sparkling on the lake—and the boys’ joyful cries echoing over the bay—are the reward for our twice-a-summer road trip from Boston? It sure does!

We had a blast putting this issue together and I hope you’ll have just as much fun putting our ideas to use. Remember, it’s summer! Which means no fuss, no muss... put away your glue gun and break out the Sharpies and stickers. That’s what we did and our Garnished-goodies are perfect just as they are!

BECAUSE NOTHING SAYS “MAKE SUMMER MEMORIES” LIKE TAKING IT ON THE ROAD. And that’s what this issue of Garnish is all about.

Enjoy your summer. ‘Til the next issue...

Whether it’s picking out your favorite road trip tunage, packing a hamper and meandering down a woodland path or kitting out the kids for an afternoon by the pool, this issue is brimming with ideas to help you enjoy the best summer has to offer.

clockwise, from top left 1. We encouraged each girl to make her box lunch her own. Each packed her favorite treats, personalized her wooden cutlery and tied it all up with some twine in our bio-pak takeout contatiner. 2. Our mini milk jugs make perfectly portable drink holders. And when they’re personalized with adorable washi tape, there’s no chance of a mix up. 3. Sharpies for the win! Nothing could be easier to do, or more fun for kids of all ages.

summer... to go! Summer is way too short to spend it in the kitchen. The next time your kids and their friends have a day of activities planned (or your family is heading on the road), why not pack up some portable treats. It’s easier than you think (and kind of fun, too!)

clockwise, from top right 1. Here’s another great summer to go idea. If lunch-on-the road isn’t your thing, how about this portable snack pack? We stuffed a quart-size berry box with a tasty muffin and a push pop filled with fruit salad. We added a couple of knotted picks, popped it all into a large cello bag, and secured it with some fun washi tape. This makes a great portable treat for some of those time-intensive summer activities like baseball tournaments, swim meets, soccer games... we could go on and on. You get the idea! Oh so easy! 2. Could we be looking at a future tennis champion? One thing’s for sure... the girls totally got in the summer spirit and worked up an appetite on the tennis court. By the looks of it, it was “love” all around. 3. You know what we love about this Garnish? It’s so easy to add a little adult flavor! How about packing lobster rolls, spicy coleslaw and Long Island Iced Tea? Or prosciutto and mozzarella sandwiches, pesto pasta salad and sangria? So many possibilities... so little summer!

nom more s’mores nom nom [ this is the taste of summer! ]

Chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers. Why do such simple ingredients add up to such a scrumptious summer treat? We don’t know... but we do know two things: we love them, and they’re always better when shared with friends.

The secret to s’mores is simple: it’s almost impossible to mess them up! Take two graham crackers, one or two squares of chocolate and one melted marshmallow (they’re best carefully roasted over a campfire, but trust us... a BBQ will do the trick just as well). Smoosh them all together and devour. S’mores are summer. ‘Nuf said. What we did… Aren’t these s’more kits adorable? We stuffed one of our kraft tie top bags with marshmallows, graham crackers and a chocolate bar. Rolling the top down makes a perfect space to pop in a marshmallow roasting stick. Finally, we made our intentions clear with a Sharpie: more, please!

our boys and their summer pals have loved s’mores since they were small [ we literally cannot handle the cuteness! ]

sometimes, they don’t want to swim Most days, we can’t keep Aaron and Ava out of the water. But on days when they’re a little less than enthusiastic about jumping in with both feet, we’ve got just the thing to keep them occupied all afternoon: custom pool kits. These were a snap to put together and because the kids helped decide what went inside, we knew they’d be excited to break them out during a lazy summer day at the pool. Hours of entertainment for the kids; hours of peace and quiet for the moms! Just how we like it. WHAT’S IN OUR KITS • 1 kraft cardboard drink carrier • 3 kid-approved coloring and activity books • 1 mini-pack of crayons or markers • 1 mini notebook • 1 bottle of bubbles • 1 sweet treat • 1 toy from the dollar store WHAT MAKES IT WORK • We opened up our arts & crafts box and let Ava and Aaron decorate their own activity kits. It would appear Aaron has a thing for monkeys! Ava chose an aquatic theme. The point is these are supplies we had on hand: stickers, washi tape and makers. Summer so easy! • These are perfectly portable: everything rolls up or fits neatly into the space and the kids can proudly tote them themselves. NOT HEADING TO THE POOL? THAT’S COOL! These activity kits are just the thing for summer road trips, or long afternoons spent spectacting at an older sibling’s summer sports event.

why help is in the bag don’t you [ it doesn’t get easier than this! ]

Some of our ideas are so simple that we think “Can we really put that in the magazine?” But we figure hey... if we loved it, you might too! And so here it is... our summer help bag. We took one big kraft paper take-out bag and stuffed it with all the on-the-road supplies we could think of.

how can you help? SUMMER ROAD TRIPPING: • Fill your bag with supplies to keep the kids calm on long car rides and pop it in the back seat between them (also helpful in keeping sibling poking and prodding to a minimum): granola bars, juice boxes, activity books, pencils and crayons, road maps... you get the idea! SUMMER SPECTATING: • Do you have a day at the ballpark coming up? Pack your help bag with sun screen, sun caps and hats for the little ones, a book or two for when they get bored, maybe even a small blanket for when they get tired. They won’t even have to ask for assistance if they know the help bag is open for business. SUMMER ELECTRONICS: • Now, we don’t advocate spending your summer glued to your iPad. But when you’re heading out of the house, why not stuff your help bag with all your electronics essentials: charging cords, adaptors, spare batteries, iPad styluses and the like. All in one place and easy to access in the car.

just press play

Wondering what’s in our bag? Just hit the play button for quick video show and tell (you’ll be taken to YouTube). We’ve got more videos like this planned. Check us out on YouTube here.

let’s hear it for the sounds of summer

We gave the girls a blank CD, one of our iBop CD cases and open access to their digital music files. After they had compiled their perfect road trip playlists, each decorated the CD case in her signature arts & craft style. This makes a fab getting-ready-for-a-road-trip activity. Everyone will enjoy groovin’ to their favorite summer tunes when it’s their turn to hit play!

here are some of our fave road trip inspired tracks!

adventure on two wheels Our family has gotten into biking in a big way. We’re not tearing down hills on mountain bikes, mind you, but we love discovering the trails and paths in and around our part of Massachusetts. You’ll often find us packing up our picnic baskets, strapping on our helmets and heading out for a Sunday afternoon of exploring. It’s almost like summer in slow motion, and we adore it!

here’s what’s in our basket: • • • • •

a picnic blanket for lounging a favorite magazine for reading a store-bought baguette for munching some linen napkins (because we think they’re pretty!) a lunch pack filled with leftovers (go ahead, make it easy on yourself!), Garnished up in one of our lidded Bowl Me Over containers and our wooden cutlery, and secured with bicycle washi tape (so cute!) a re-fillable bottle or two of flavored water

the games

we play Any parent who has ever hit the road with a carful of kids dreads hearing “Are we there yet?”! No matter how many times you explain the length of the journey, or how many pit stops you’ll make before you get where you’re going, they just don’t seem to understand. So in the spirit of sharing, here are some of our favorite ways to keep kids occupied and interested on the road.

I SPY “I spy with my little eye, something red.” This easy-to-learn game can keep younger kids entertained for longer than you might think. The game is simple: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.

I’M GOING ON A PICNIC

BY THE NUMBERS Here’s an easy activity to pack in the car. Choose six things that inevitably start a sibling squabble. For example: picking the next song on the radio, deciding where to stop for lunch, choosing the movie in the hotel, opting for ice cream or popcorn. You’ll know what works for your family. Then grab some blank card stock, write them out and pop them in some of our gift card enclosures. Package them up in one of our burlap bags and let the kids pick their numbers.

thinkgarnish.com

This alphabet-based memory game is great for kids five and up. It’s more fun when the whole family joins in. The first player says “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing...” followed by something that begins with A, such as apples. The second player repeats what the first person said, but adds something that begins with B, for example, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples and bananas.” And so on with C, D, and the rest of the alphabet. Forget an item? You’re out! The last player able to recite all the list wins.

20 QUESTIONS We all know this road trip classic. Player One thinks of a person, place or thing. Players take turns asking questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no. After each answer, the questioner gets one guess. Play continues until a player guesses correctly, or 20 questions have been asked without a correct guess.

WOULD YOU RATHER? This one is fun, and a great way to learn a little bit more about the likes and dislikes of your family. Brainstorm a bunch of “would you rather” questions: “Would you rather kiss a snake or a tiger?” “Would you rather be a deep sea diver or an astronaut?” The game can be silly or fun: however you like it! Print them out and put them in the car. They’re great for long stretches on the road!

the last word

“All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer–one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going–one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.” ~ L.M. Montgomery, “Ann’s House of Dreams”
