Welcome to the 2020 unveiling of the 7th edition of OVATION: A Tribute to Iowa Women and Girls! As I sat down to write this message considering the COVID-19 crisis, I was overwhelmed by a sense of gratitude for all essential workers on the frontlines of this pandemic. Your courage and resiliency to arrive in person day after day in this time of adversity is to be applauded. I am also inspired by the greater good in the collective effort to remain connected as we honor each other by practicing social distancing. As we strive to create connection, our unveiling will differ greatly from past years. However, I think that this will be one of our most memorable events. We are excited to share these stories of resilient Iowa women with you.

As we celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote, this theme resonates with us all. We have made progress, but we dream bigger. The Iowa Women’s Foundation (IWF) celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2019 and continues to impact the lives of women and girls across the entire state. The work of IWF, driven by research, identified six barriers that inhibit women and girls from reaching economic self-sufficiency: 1) Housing 2) Mentors 3) Transportation 4) Child Care 5) Education/Training 6) Employment

We honor and celebrate the Iowa women and girls in the 2020 edition of OVATION: A Tribute to Iowa Women and Girls. You may find that some of the same attributes used to describe the women of the Iowa suffrage movement are also fitting for the women and girls honored in this edition. However, as you read each unique personal story you will find those attributes and so many more. We celebrate all our honorees and are inspired and encouraged by the big and the small things they do each day. We celebrate their stories and know that the end is not yet written in all they do. Hard Won, Not Done!

IWF uses five key strategies to shatter these barriers: Education, Collaboration, Advocacy, Research, and Grantmaking. Through the growing support of individuals, businesses, and community partners, IWF has awarded more than one million dollars in grants to more than 230 programs that have supported thousands of women and girls in all 99 Iowa counties over the last quarter century, but our work is not done. Hard Won, Not Done!

DEDICATION The seventh edition of OVATION: A Tribute to Iowa Women and Girls is dedicated to Carrie Chapman Catt, Mary Jane Coggeshall, and Annie Savery—three suffragists whose spirited leadership led the way to Iowa becoming the 10th state to ratify the 19th Amendment.

Savery was the first woman to address women’s suffrage with a large group of Iowans—an audience that was not favorable to the movement. She founded the first women’s suffragist society in Polk County and traveled the state as the leading spokesperson.

Coggeshall was a founder and charter member of several suffragist groups in Des Moines. She served at the state and national level in a number of capacities, including president, secretary, and executive committee member. She was the first editor of the monthly newspaper, Woman’s Standard, and wrote for several national papers on the subject of suffrage.

Mary Jane Coggeshall

Catt was an accomplished reporter who also wrote about women’s rights. She began working nationally and was invited to speak at the 1890 National American Woman Suffrage Association conference. She addressed Congress on the proposed women’s suffragist amendment and served as president of this national group in the early 1900s and again from 1915–1920.

In 1871, the suffragists came under attack due to an advocate that strongly promoted free love, a standard not acceptable by the majority. Savery defended the right of any person to join the suffrage ranks despite their

personal values. Because of this, she was banished from the suffragist movement, but nevertheless, continued her support of women through entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors.

In 1908, Coggeshall was part of a major lawsuit against the city of Des Moines after women were denied ballots in a city bond election. Based on a law passed in 1894 which gave women the right to vote in these types of elections, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled the Des Moines election void. This same year, Coggeshall marched in the historical women’s suffrage parade in Boone, Iowa—the third women’s suffrage parade in the United States.

Catt served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Under her leadership, she brought senators and representatives together to support the suffrage movement at both the state and federal levels.

When the United States entered World War I, Catt moved to support the war effort, which shifted the public’s perception of the women’s movement. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed his support of the women, and the 19th Amendment was adopted on August 26, 1920.

Despite the hardships and resistance to the suffrage movement, each of these women devoted much of their time, energy, and resources to their cause. They were resilient visionaries and courageous advocates who paved the way for future generations.

For their strength, resilience, and passion, we dedicate this edition of Ovation in their memory.

ANNA MILBACH Anna Milbach is Vice President, Commercial Banking Deposits and Payment Relationship Manager at US Bank in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Anna has been with US Bank for seven years and manages Deposit and Cash Management needs of higher education institutions, municipalities, and large businesses. Anna has received recognition for her exceptional service to her clients, and has been recognized as a top performer for US Bank.

Anna brings a smile to the face of those around her while also instilling a sense of total professionalism. Anna brings the wow factor to client interactions with her positive outlook and focus on solutions. Anna participated in the inaugural US Bank Women’s Sponsorship Class in 2014, and eventually took ownership of the 2020 class. This is a perfect example of Anna, going from a participant to leadership. Anna’s leadership and willingness has been important in the continuation of this program, and in devising summer programs for interns.

Anna is also a leader in the community. She has served on the Waypoint Services Board of Directors since July 2014, has been on the steering committee for Women Lead Change since January 2014, actively organizing the WLC annual conference, has been a Junior Achievement classroom volunteer since 2014, and has served as the US Bank United Way Company Coordinator, responsible for exceptional employee participation and funds raised.

DAWN MARIE MARTINEZ OROPEZA “If you want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him... the people who give you their food give you their heart.” – César A. Chávez

Dawn Marie Martinez Oropeza is the Executive Director of ¡Al Éxito!, a recipient of a LULAC Latino Hero Award, a Business Record Women of Influence Honoree, a consultant to the César E. Chávez Foundation, an artist, curator, muralist, activist, Mexica dancer, sister, mother, daughter, prima, and the first person in Des Moines to invite me to her home for a meal.

Dawn became the first Executive Director of a new organization ¡Al Éxito! that was founded in Marshalltown to help mentor Latina youth. Since her hire, Dawn has had the opportunity to use her blend of skills and talents as an artist, dancer, mentor, and educator to grow the organization to a statewide one that serves close to 1,000 Latinx youth each year. Through her leadership, the organization offers opportunities for students (many first-generation) and their families to visit college campuses, help parents learn about education and career pathways for their children, and offer culturally relevant programming that helps students succeed academically while embracing their cultural roots.

I continue to see the fruits of Dawn’s labor: young, bright, and successful Latinx youth honing their skills and leadership abilities. This is all thanks to the work and sacrifice of Dawn Marie Martinez Oropeza: artist, educator, honoree, and one of the only people I know to offer me their food, and their heart.

It is my pleasure to honor Dawn alongside the Al Éxito Board of Directors, Gabby Guerra, Assistant Director, her family, and her beloved friends.

ROSANNE HOPSON Rosanne, you are a gem. You have so many people who love you: family, friends, past and present coworkers, and your community. Your dedication to helping and inspiring others has been shown over and over through your 20 years of nursing at UIHC, and nearly 20 years as a fitness instructor at North Dodge Athletic Club. However, you are so much more than a fitness instructor. You are a friend, therapist, chauffeur, and party planner to name a few. You are best described as selfless and always thinking of others — always.

You have also spent countless hours (years?!) volunteering to make our community a better place to live. In every role you have served, from councils, committees or boards, and no matter how big or small, you lead with grace and integrity. You exemplify generosity, patience, and a knack for rolling up your sleeves and taking on a task or obstacle of any size without complaint. You can plan the perfect holiday, dinner or birthday party, or huge community event effortlessly and under budget, while giving someone else the credit. You are amazing. We are grateful.

MARY DONEGAN-RITTER Mary Donegan-Ritter is currently serving as Interim Department Head in the Department of Teaching at UNI. This is the second time that Mary has stepped in to serve as Interim Department Head for the College of Education. Helping out, stepping in, and doing what she can for others is what Mary does best. As an associate professor of early childhood education, Mary focuses on preparing early childhood teachers for inclusive practices. A quote on her bio page highlights how inclusion teaches compassion, understanding, and patience. Mary’s compassion, patience, authenticity, and passion are reflected in her volunteering with Quota, St. Luke’s Food Pantry, her children’s school and sports, and are the characteristics that make Mary such a wonderful professor, wife, mother, daughter, friend, and colleague.

SARAH GOETTSCH Sarah Elizabeth Goettsch may have been born into the church, but it didn’t always welcome her with open arms. Raised in a family where both grandfathers were conservative Lutheran pastors, her decision to enter seminary was met with disapproval. In that church, women were not allowed to be ordained. Her early response to oppression was indicative of the dynamic, brave woman that she was to become. She stood by her convictions and met that opposition with determination and a desire to do what’s right and to speak up for those who are in need of an ally. That strength of character is on display when she preaches against oppression, patriarchy, abuse, and injustice. Her skill as a speaker is second only to her ability to express empathy and compassion for those who surround her. When friends were asked for their thoughts on the impact that Sarah has had on their lives, this is what they shared: She fights for the rights of all humans, no matter their gender identity, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, sexual preference, or religious preference/no preference.

Her ability to be both genius and authentic in the same stroke make her inspirational and approachable.

She is brilliant, confident, and has a way of putting all who are around her at ease.

During Flash’s battle I found my true faith, and Sarah played a huge role in that.

Sarah’s desire to give is unmatched by anyone I’ve ever met. She is generous with her time, her kindness, and her love.

KATE MORELAND Kate Moreland is the epitome of an empowered female leader. She leads with courage and foresight balanced with intuitiveness, kindness, and humility.

She has a pulse for how to reach people on all levels, at the head and the heart.

Anyone who crosses paths with Kate feels grateful and somehow better because of her presence.

DR. BEVERLY A. SMITH Dr. Beverly A. Smith recently retired as the Associate Superintendent for Human Resources and Equity for the Waterloo Community School District.

She is currently serving as the Interim Principal for Lincoln Elementary School. Born and raised in Waterloo, Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell College and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa. She was the first African American woman to earn a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Northern Iowa.

She has dedicated her life to education in the state of Iowa. Prior professional positions include elementary teacher, elementary principal, and adjunct professor in the education departments of both Wartburg College and the University of Northern Iowa. She has been very active in many civic and professional organizations. She currently serves on the Allen Hospital Board and the Black Hawk Grundy Mental Health Board.

Past involvements include serving as Chair of the State of Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, appointments to the Iowa State Board of Regents, the Governor’s Education Roundtable, the Governor’s Task Force for Closing the Achievement Gap for African-American Males, service on the boards of Cedar Valley United Way, Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, Afro-American Community Broadcasting, and past president of Tau Zeta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Dr. Smith and her husband James have two daughters, Felicia and Nina; three granddaughters, Brooklynn, Kingslee, and Jaymes; and two grandsons, Aaron James and Landon Cole. She worships at Hope City Church.

In virtually all aspects of Doris’s adult life, whether she was volunteering to help serve on the Board of Directors for non-profit and non-partisan groups like the United Way, Salvation Army, Silo’s & Smokestacks, Waterloo Telecommunications, and 50-50 in 2020; co-chairing a referendum to help Cedar Falls become the second city in the nation to have fiber-to-the-home; spearheading the rejuvenation of the Cedar Falls downtown merchant area (and receiving a national award); being hired as the first female administrator (Marketing Manager) at Cedar Falls Utilities; being the national telecommunications spokesperson for Black & Veatch Engineering; creating University of Northern Iowa’s Women in Politics Bipartisan Scholarship Benefit to award $15,000 annually in scholarships to females pursuing a career in public service; representing 30,000 constituents while serving in the Iowa House of Representatives; protecting three million Iowans while in charge of Iowa’s Board of Parole; or chairing Iowa’s 19th Amendment Centennial Commemoration with over 100 activities occurring statewide during 2020 . . . she’s been a change agent.

A change agent is an individual who promotes and supports a new way of doing something, whether it’s the use of a new process, the adoption of a new management structure, or the transformation of an old business model to a new one. That is what Doris has done—she’s been an agent of change and a change advocate while assuming responsibility for promoting the value of any transformation that is being undertaken by an organization, formulating how the transformation will happen, guiding and supporting others through the transformation, and ensuring that the new processes, procedures, and structures are implemented in ways that deliver a value that’s greater than when she started any initiative.

Doris exemplifies six characteristics which we marvel: a clear vision, patient yet persistent, asking tough questions, street-smart knowledge, leads by example, and creates a strong relationship built on trust. We respect her for being not only a change agent with agencies and institutions she’s represented, but also for being a change agent in our personal relationship.

We marvel at your passion, commitment and leadership. You are an exceptional role model for others. We are honored to know you, to work with you, and to call you friend!

KIM HORRAS “Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” — Maya Angelou I was fortunate enough to interact with, watch, and learn from someone who gave those words meaning. Kim made sure things were sunny even when it was dark around us. It never seemed like work in our office with Kim there – the Halloween parades, the never-ending parties, and events to recognize people or accomplishments, while she remained in the background, smiling.

The impressive part for me was when things were difficult, she continued to focus on the fun and not the dysFUNction. She kept us all human and helped us through difficult times with advice, encouragement, and a push forward to get out of the slump.

It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you don’t care who gets the credit.

Ms. Horras exemplified this statement, working continually behind the scenes to make all of us better, even though we thought we were doing it by ourselves.

We would later realize how untrue this was.

Kim taught me that it’s important to have a sense of family at work, the importance of genuinely listening, and caring for all. We may not always agree but we can always care - this is what Kim does best. LISA GRAY

PHUONG TRAN There’s no one I would rather have on my team in this life than Lisa Gray. She’s always thinking of others and what she can do to help them out or let them know she cares. She feels the joy and pain that her friends, family — and strangers for that matter — go through. She is always willing to give of her time when someone is in need. Lisa is devoted to helping at her children’s school, organizing countless activities and the PTO. She serves on the board of the Red Shamrock Foundation — one of the many ways she embraces being involved and making a difference. Lisa’s big heart touches the people around her and her whole community. She makes our world a better place.

Phuong Tran grew up in Bien Hoa, Vietnam, where it was accepted that living in America is heaven on earth if you work hard. She works 10-hour days, six days per week while raising two kids with her husband Tran. She never sleeps in, ever. Phuong opened Elite Nails in Iowa City in 2007. She has a devoted base of regulars, for good reason. After she greets you by name, she reminds you what colors you like as she finishes another guest’s manicure and catches up with their life, the details of which she remembers from their last visit. Her ability to make your day with the light that she shines on everyone who enters her shop is the reason that we honor her today.

MARINAN COONS One word we could use to describe Marinan is altruistic; her unselfish devotion to the welfare of others shows in everything she does.

Born in Germany and given her great-grandmother’s maiden name, Marinan’s family soon moved to Bettendorf, her hometown. Marinan married her high-school sweetheart, Scott, in 2005 after graduating from the University of Iowa in Finance. She’s faithfully available for family near and far, and she bridges the gap through regular visits and calls.

An integral part of SouthGate since 2011, Marinan has been indispensable in her roles, especially the successful company transition in 2019. She steps up to tasks and projects, and she enjoys the challenge of solving a problem.

Outside of work, Marinan plays softball, hangs out with friends, plays with her dog, Cammy, and cats, Everett and Randall, and enjoys gaming with her husband. With everything she does for others, she takes care of herself by focusing on her health and fitness. She and Scott are longtime RAGBRAI riders, and she participates in races and events for causes she’s passionate about —those helping people and pets. A regular volunteer at the Iowa City Animal Shelter, you’ll also find her supporting Habitat for Humanity and the Iowa Women’s Foundation. A forever fan, Marinan cheers on the Hawks no matter the sport and reunites with the Hawkeye Alumni Marching Band every year.

We, the SouthGate team, are better individuals because Marinan is part of our lives. We appreciate her and are thrilled to honor her.

MARY KAY MCGRATH Mary Kay McGrath has been a vital part of the Cedar Rapids community her whole life. She raised her children here, was heavily involved in their schools and activities while completing her own education at Kirkwood and Coe College, served on numerous boards, and is a longstanding donor of the McGrath Family Fund through GCRCF. Her most recent impact has been on the Czech Village Neighborhood.

While serving on the board of the Czech and Slovak Museum, she decided to nurture the area by purchasing properties, placing businesses, fixing up buildings, and creating an Airbnb to boost tourism. Czech Village was just awarded “Best Neighborhood on the Rise” and “Best Tourist Attraction.”

This community is fortunate to benefit from this remarkable woman’s influence and dedication.

JENNIFER COOPER Jeni Cooper, CCIM is Vice President and Manager of the Commercial Real Estate team at Bankers Trust. She is responsible for new business development, cross-selling of other bank products, and all phases of underwriting loans, including real estate analysis, cash flow models, profitability models, and credit underwriting. In 2019, Jeni was named Commercial Real Estate Professional of the Year by the Des Moines Business Record.

Throughout her 30 years in the industry, Jeni has originated more than $2 billion in loans for construction/term financing of commercial property in Des Moines. While she certainly excels at the everyday loans any commercial real estate banker could do, Jeni has consistently taken on complex projects with multiple layers of financing and unique loan structures. She began working on these sorts of projects early in her career with low-income housing and historic tax credit projects that included several funding sources.

Jeni has a knack for taking complicated projects and structuring and monitoring a loan that will achieve the developer’s or project’s goals, while at the same time protecting repayment sources for the bank and mitigating credit risks. Many of Jeni’s deals are not only good for an organization or developer, but are also contributing to important growth, development, and revitalization projects across central Iowa.

She spends a significant number of hours volunteering her time and talent for affordable housing-related nonprofits in central Iowa, including serving on the board for the newly formed Iowa Housing Partnership and H.O.M.E., Inc., where she is also treasurer.

MONICA ROGAN

HEATHER WOODIN

Monica joined VGM in 2010 as a care coordinator, and has continuously moved up through the company, spending time as a team lead, operations manager, and assistant vice president of business office operations. Monica approaches her work with a growth mindset. Her development is a testament to her commitment to continuous improvement.

Heather Woodin serves the Iowa City area as the Children’s and Family Ministry Director at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, dedicating 20+ years of her life to improving the lives of children.

She is the definition of selfless and a voice not only for children’s faith development, but also growing their life skills and providing for their basic needs. While Heather would never want recognition for the time and energy she gives to ensure fun, creativity, love, and space where all are welcome and included, we felt it was crucial that she be celebrated! Heather, you are dearly loved for all you give back to this world, most especially its children. Thank you for showing up every day and being wonderful, amazing Y-O-U!

In addition, Monica sits as the incoming chair on VGM’s Women in Leadership (WIL) committee.

Monica has been a driving force to provide our WIL participants with the resources, tools, and support network to empower their potential to be heard, influence key decisions, and be a sought-after strategic voice within the organization.

LORET MAST Loret Mast is a character in the best sense. Born and raised in Montana, she rode her horse Lark to her one room schoolhouse, and when she learned to drive a car, with her pet sheep Mossy. After attending Montana State University, she married Tom Burton and, with three young children (Craig, Julia, and Hanly), made her way to Iowa City, where Tom assumed a faculty position at the UI College of Medicine. In addition to full time parenting, she earned her BFA in painting from the UI. A fierce advocate of women’s, human, and LGBTQ rights, and politically active in local and national politics, Loret has served on the boards of DVIP, RVAP, Iowa Abortion Rights Action League, and NARAL. Some of Loret’s favorite memories of grassroots politics are attending rallies with her daughter Julia and driving Jesse Jackson Sr. across Iowa during his presidential campaigns.

Loret is a prolific painter and ceramicist, with works at UIHC and in private homes. She’s known in the community for her love of animals: this photo was taken when she and her dog Guernsey won a pet/owner look-a-like contest!

She’s generous with friends, helping care for them when they are ill and serenading them on the accordion for birthdays!

Her love for her family is exceeded only by how much they treasure her: “Loret has an insatiable curiosity about the world. She has a wickedly sharp sense of humor, an incredible mind, and a courageous heart. I’m honored to be her daughter.”

VICKI BROWN Simply put, Vicki Brown is a trailblazer, paving her own path throughout the volleyball world in a short time. In May 2019, Vicki was unexpectedly named the head coach of the Iowa volleyball team, becoming one of two female coaches in the Big Ten Conference and the second African American head coach in Big Ten volleyball history. She didn’t hesitate when her name was called, becoming a leader for her student-athletes, staff, and the University of Iowa Athletics Department.

It was clear from the beginning, the job was earned, not given. A former AllBig Ten volleyball player at Illinois, it only took Vicki 11 years to find herself at the helm of the nation’s best volleyball conference. If you ask those around her, they believe even that is overdue. Perhaps the most exciting thing about Vicki is that her footprint in the world of sport is only beginning.

Vicki’s larger-than-life personality is infectious; every conversation always includes a smile and a laugh. Her personal mantra, “I will use my platform to assist in the development of female empowerment always, in all ways”, isn’t just something she says, but something she demonstrates every day.

Though her life as head coach keeps her busy, her family remains a top priority. She’s especially proud of her role as Aunt Vicki. She’s the family member you can rely on, the friend you want by your side, and leader you want as your coach. The world is a better place because of you, Vicki Brown!

NINA LOHMAN The world is full of boxes and Nina Lohman doesn’t fit into a single one of them.

Nina is a poet. An explorer. A sister, a mother, a daughter. A friend. Nina listens and cares and makes everyone she talks to feel like the only person in the room. And the thing is: it is real. For that moment, they are.

Nina makes order from chaos. Her junk drawer is probably better organized than your filing cabinet.

She is full of surprises. Ask her about her unicycle sometime.

Nina makes art and shares art and is an essential, inconspicuous, and indispensable part of making Iowa City the Greatest Small City for the Arts. She exudes the wonder of a child and the sagacity of someone far beyond her years.

CAROL ANN SEYDEL Carol Ann Seydel was an amazing woman. She was a daughter, wife, mother, friend, teacher, and grandmother that was loved and feared by many. Carol expected the best from you. Because of her love and commitment, you were compelled to respond to those expectations. If you were her student, you became a better writer. If you were her child, you learned to strive for something better. If you were her grandchild, you grew up knowing that you were loved unconditionally.

Her first teaching license was in Home Economics, but she hated cooking and loved to joke about that. She had five children under the age of five, and became a matriarch and formulated a recipe for a great family event. We all loved to gather and eat, and still do because of her. It wasn’t really about the food, it was about providing comfort, people, and a reason to gather.

Getting together was and is our family’s tradition.

Here are some secret family “recipes” to make you laugh and celebrate your family history. ● Grandma’s Turkey Roast – get a Jennie O pressed turkey roast and place in oven. Take drippings and serve with mashed potatoes and stuffing. ● Liver and Onions – get one disgusting piece of liver and some onions and put them in a pan and cook them until they are disgusting. Serve. Sit at the table until you have eaten your liver and onions, or all night, whichever comes first. Any chance to feed the dog is a welcome relief from this ritual. Otherwise, it’s all night at the table. ● Carol and Lyle’s Last Stand Turkey Dinner prepare turkey for roasting, argue about who’s doing what when, place turkey in oven, set to temperature, prepare all side dishes. Wait until appropriately too late to recover, pull out wonderful looking turkey and recognize that it is indeed a rare treat- oven is set to broil, not bake. Argue about what went wrong.

Continue arguing while two of the children hack up the turkey and place in the microwave. Argue about whether the stuffing inside should be thrown away.

Argue about whether the carcass should be saved for soups and such. Sit down and enjoy with great consternation and worry about digestive diseases.

● Wake Up At Grandma’s House – if there are no frozen sourdough pancakes, expect to find toaster strudels without the frosting packets. Eat them that way unless you find extra frosting packets, in which case you eat all the frosting packets with your toaster strudel and leave the remainder for those who woke up late. If there were no frosting packets, you woke up late. ● Grandma’s Dove Bars – come to Grandma’s house, look through the cupboards, find nothing good, look in their freezer, find little Dove bars, but don’t take any. Walk forlornly in Grandma’s view until she offers you one, at which time you’re free and clear to eat the whole box.

JACKIE REGER

JODY WHITE Jody White is the definition of a life-long giver, the epitome of ebullience, graciousness, and encouragement.

Jody is the Executive Director and Founding Partner of Dress for Success Des Moines. Since 2011, they have helped over 2,500 women who are supporting more than 5,000 children in the Des Moines community on their career journeys.

She volunteers at the St. Francis Academy Library, as Assistant Coach for Girls on the Run, and the School Auction. She is a Girl Scout Troop Leader, Treasurer and Co-Cookie Mom. She led the East High School Alumnae Association Annual Gala & Silent Auction.

Jackie is a dedicated member of her family, a contributor in her community, and a frontline healthcare worker in the Iowa City VA system.

She is the rock of the Reger-Wahls household—a committed wife to Terry, a loving “short mom” to Zeb and Zach, and “Alpha” to our dog Teddy.

Jackie is quick to lend a helping hand—maintaining local mountain bike trails, serving as a Den Mother, volunteering with Moms Demand Action, helping Terry figure out how Instagram works—she always goes above and beyond.

In her “free time”, she runs 5Ks and half marathons, golfs, and attends Hawkeye sports. She is a selfless leader who empowers, inspires, and enriches our community!

CAMILLE HOGAN Camille Hogan of Waterloo views her life as a tapestry, with her family creating the main threads. Married for 57 years, she and Dennis are devoted to their daughter Stephanie (David) LeCompte and grandchildren Nathan, Meta, and Caroline.

The other threads represent the people with whom Camille has worked. She considers the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, where she served as president, her outstanding “prep school for volunteerism.” While Camille has served on over a dozen other boards, usually in leadership positions, the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center was a primary focus. Throughout her fourteen years on the Board, Camille was part of the visioning and feasibility study for the PAC, the major gifts campaign (which she and Dennis co-chaired), construction of the facility, and the critical early years of the GBPAC. She also served as the Board’s chair.

In 1979, Camille purchased Shorts Travel in Waterloo. Today, the family corporation, now run by her son-in-law, specializes in corporate and sports travel. Shorts is still headquartered in Waterloo but has staff/offices in 27 states.

Camille’s other volunteer passion began with Wheaton Fransican Iowa/ Covenant Hospital (now MercyOne). Camille chaired the Covenant Board, then became one of nine members of the WF Governing Board. Today she chairs the Otto Schoitz Foundation, with assets over $50 million, created when MercyOne received the hospital. Her leadership in getting the Foundation started, and distributing funds to enhance the health and quality of life of residents in the Cedar Valley, has been a gift to the community.

The Cedar Valley thanks Camille for the opportunity to be part of the beautiful tapestry her life has created.

NANCY HUMBLES Strive to make a difference in students’ lives.

Nancy Humbles has based her life’s work on these words. She has made that difference by encouraging, mentoring, and advocating for students to help them maximize their personal potential.

Nancy has worked with students all her life. She began her career at the Marion Learning Center working with high school dropouts. She also worked with children at the Jane Boyd Community House before joining the University of Iowa in 1990 as an academic counselor, commuting from Cedar Rapids where she lived with her husband and children.

During her years at the university she became a valued advisor in the Tippie College of Business and later held other positions that provided support to underserved students. From 2007 until her retirement in 2015, Nancy served as the director of the UI Center for Diversity and Enrichment. She devoted her efforts to providing opportunities and resources for students from diverse backgrounds, including students of color, first-generation college students, and students from low-income families.

In retirement she remains busy, serving on numerous boards and committees. She is the first African American elected to the Cedar Rapids Community School District Board of Education and currently serves as board president. She recently joined the African American Museum of Iowa (AAMI) Board of Directors. She is a recipient of the AAMI History Maker Award, NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, and 2017 UI Distinguished Alumni Award. She was a 2019 inductee into the Iowa African American Hall of Fame.

NORA LEE BALMER Wife, Mother, Confidant, Grandmother, Businesswoman, GreatGrandmother, Philanthropist.

Nora Lee Balmer has excelled in many roles through her 92 years, and the preceding list captures just a few of them. She is known amongst the family as The Matriarch and remains the driving force behind her ever-growing brood.

Nora Lee and husband Wayne, who recently celebrated their 72nd year of marriage, moved from Kellogg to Iowa City in 1958 to join her father’s new business, Plumbers Supply Company (PSC).

While Wayne was helping grow the business on the front end, Nora Lee was making sure bills were paid and relationships with the bank were strong.

When they retired in 1998, the company had grown, and the back office was a well-oiled operation. During this time, her role at PSC was actually her second job. Raising her three boys (John, Jim, David) and one girl (Mary), along with managing the household, was her primary role, and we’re all thankful for it. With nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Nora Lee continues to be active and extremely generous with her time and energy.

Speaking of generosity, Nora Lee was exposed to the arts and possibilities of Hancher early on and has been a supporter ever since. In addition to Hancher, the Hawkeye wrestling program holds a special place in Nora Lee’s heart. She appreciates the work ethic and the heart of the team, and she prefers it when the Hawks cut to the chase and pin the other guy.

CAROL BODENSTEINER Carol Bodensteiner is a writer who finds inspiration in the people, places, culture, and history of the Midwest. Born and raised on her family’s dairy farm in eastern Iowa, Carol published a memoir Growing Up Country: Memories of an Iowa Farm Girl in 2008. Her debut novel Go Away Home was published in 2015. This WWI era novel was the 2014 Readers’ Favorite SILVER MEDAL winner in the Historical Fiction-Personage category. In 2018 Carol published her second novel Simple Truth.

It is through Carol’s love for people, places, and culture that she found her way to the Oakridge Neighborhood where she invested nine years as a member of the Oakridge Board of Directors. Comprised of individuals representing 16 countries and speaking 25 different languages, Carol immersed herself in the Oakridge work where a service enriched housing model allows children, adults, and families to develop to their full potential.

Carol is the consummate non-profit board leader and ideal volunteer who continues to share her immense communication and public relations skills, her incredible generosity, and philanthropic spirit to the benefit of the Oakridge organization and those it serves.

When one thinks of Carol Bodensteiner words like passionate, committed, steadfast, and persistent come to mind. Carol embodies the spirit and intent of this recognition by the Iowa Women’s Foundation and Oakridge is incredibly proud to celebrate her and all she has done to benefit the organization and the Des Moines community.

CHRIS ROHRET Chris Rohret is the definition of a lifelong learner.

Ask her what she’s reading these days, and she has a variety of reading materials on her end table: several professional books about teaching gifted learners or online learning, a home decorating magazine, fictional texts from Oprah’s book club, the NY Times bestseller list, and her daily crossword puzzle from the newspaper to expand her vocabulary. Her love of learning, reading, and questioning shows how passionate she is about continuing to educate herself and others.

As a mother, she would often leave her children’s questions with more questions. Her responses often prompted them to think deeper, like, “Why do you think that? How would it change if…? What do you think people could do about…? Where could you find the answers to that question?” Chris has served a multitude of roles as a mentor, teacher, or simply an interested learner and participant in the community.

Her involvement in groups and committees in the Iowa City area highlights her leadership and organizational abilities as well as her desire to keep learning new things. Chris has not only had a huge impact on the learning of her children, who also became teachers, but also her grandchildren, sisters, brothers, fellow teachers, friends, community members, and countless others who have crossed her path.

FEMALE ALLIANCE OF CIVIL ENGINEERS

BECKY SVATOS Making the world a better place has always been the driving force behind Becky’s life and work.

From a career spanning decades as an environmental engineer and as current Vice President with Stanley Consultants, to her empowerment of countless women with the Society of Women Engineers, Becky is always fighting for future generations. Another of the countless examples of Becky improving our world and helping those in need, is her work as President of the Iowa Chapter of Engineers Without Borders, where she has worked to bring fresh water to remote villages in El Salvador.

The Female Alliance of Civil Engineers exists to create a community on campus with the purpose of improving the networking opportunities for women and their allies within the civil engineering department at the University of Iowa. The goal of this group is to empower and unify women pursing a degree in civil engineering, by creating a safe place for women to study, network, and talk about the experiences and challenges faced in this field.

Even while changing the world, she has always shown endless love and care for her family. We could not be prouder of her and we love her so much!

Outside support has assisted financially and provided structure, networking opportunities, and mentoring. Co-founder Stephanie Krogh said it best – “supporting women is important in any field: representation matters. When you look around and see other women succeeding, it boosts your own self confidence. You are not alone.”

JASMINE ALMOAYYED Jasmine Almoayyed manages the City of Cedar Rapids Economic Development Division, directing economic development activities for the city, including new business recruiting, retention, workforce development, strategic planning, and marketing. Before joining the city in January 2013, she performed business and economic development outreach at Kirkwood Community College.

Jasmine holds BA degrees in psychology and political science from the University of Iowa, and a master’s degree in political science from Iowa State University. She serves on the board for the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, Four Oaks, and the Regional Workforce Investment Board, and is a past member of the board for the Entrepreneurial Development Center, East Central Iowa Council of Governments, and Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Jasmine has a passion for creating programming and solutions to encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a first-generation American, she has a perspective and understanding of how inclusive practices can produce economic benefits which, with her determination and persistence throughout the course of her unique journey, has resulted in unprecedented new business development and support service growth within Cedar Rapids.

Born to her Bosnian parents, Jasmine was raised with the value of hard work and helping the disadvantaged. Upon marrying her husband, Andrew, she gained family in Bahrain, which has given the Almoayyeds an excuse to do what they love – travel and see family. Jasmine’s most important accomplishment arrived in 2019, when her daughter Aya was born. She’s already working on instilling her values in Aya, with no limitations on what she can accomplish.

Every day they CREATE home for our residents, and employees. CREATE is an acronym for our corporate values of Caring, Respect, Enthusiasm, Awareness, Teamwork, and Encouragement. The management team works together to help everyone stay healthy, happy, and engaged in the life of the community. The women being recognized lead by example.

KRISTEN COREY Kristen Corey is passionate about equality and inclusiveness. She works to expand opportunities for women and girls and give voice to Iowans who are often underrepresented and undervalued. It’s fitting, then, that Kristen finds motivation in this Jane Goodall quote — “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

Kristen is purpose-driven and knows what kind of difference she wants to make.

She leads the Iowa Office on the Status of Women as its program planner. She has actively forged collaborative initiatives to engage women of all backgrounds and interests, while working as a champion to expand opportunities and improve policies that affect the education, economic security, and safety of Iowa women and their families.

Kristen earned undergraduate and master’s degrees from Iowa State University.

She started her career in academic research for ISU Extension, then moved to a policy position with the Iowa Department of Human Services Child Support Recovery Unit. At the Office on the Status of Women, she advocates for early childhood education, expanded access to quality childcare, equality and financial security for women, and a range of policies to improve the lives of Iowa women and girls.

One way to expand opportunities is through the Iowa Talent Bank – an online tool that connects interested individuals with governmental roles serving on state and local boards and commissions. Kristen played a pivotal role to make this concept a working reality and a catalyst for inclusivity.

JULIE MONSON “Iced tea, please. Is it brewed?” Those of us who know Julie hear this phrase often, as it’s her drink of choice. Her caring, compassion, and genuine warmth draw people to her. She brings a joy and sparkle to every conversation.

Julie is an active contributor in the Iowa City Community. Without ever seeking the spotlight, she’s a team player who is always fully engaged and has a “cando” attitude. She’s an excellent leader with a genuine interest in peoples’ lives.

She brings a positive influence through her generous contribution of time and talents.

Julie was very involved in her daughters’ schools, volunteering in their classrooms and becoming President of the PTA. Julie also served for three years as a Board Member of the Iowa City Public Library’s Friends Foundation.

In 2015-16 Julie co-chaired the United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties and was also a member of the Community Impact Council. Julie currently serves on the Board of Iowa Public Radio. Myrna Johnson, Executive Director says, “Julie is generous with her time and talent, offering her network and ideas to help IPR be the best we can be as an organization.” As an active member of her church, Julie also supports her congregation’s ministry and mission.

Julie is fiercely loyal to family and friends. She’s always happiest when she’s doing something to help others. A friend says there is one word that comes to mind to sum up Julie – “Joy! She radiates joy and inspires joy in others.”

Work would take her to three of our surrounding metros and land her back home in Iowa. Today she continues a 12-year dedication at Pearson, and volunteers with Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates at Washington High School.

She’s a mother and role model of two beautiful girls who reflect her love and kindness, Vice President of club softball, and never afraid to catch for her 13-year-old pitcher or manage the continuous curiosity of her four-year-old.

Mary’s generosity, grace, and kindness become quickly known to those who work with her. She has a passion for serving others and has spent a lifetime caring for those around her. Mary’s husband, children, pets, plants, and communities have all been lifted up through her commitment to their wellbeing.

Mary grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Following family tradition, she earned her BA at Purdue University. It was there that she met her husband, Bruce Harreld. Soon after marrying, the couple moved to Boston where Mary earned her JD at Boston College Law School. Thus began an adventure of 12 major moves, four children, eight grandchildren, and countless hours of service. Throughout all of these transitions, Mary learned that the best way to get to know a new community was to get involved. Her educational background and compassion have made her an asset to many. In 2016, Mary arrived in Iowa with heart and arms open to her new community.

It was no surprise that she quickly found new friends and meaningful work through the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, The University of Iowa Trans Inclusivity Task Force, the Rafael Club, and the 19th Century Club, to name a few.

Mary’s passion shines when creating beauty through elegant design and impeccable events.

She loves creating spaces for her family and friends to gather. The past few years, she has hosted and supported numerous events for the Iowa community. In 2017, she began a new tradition with the first ever UI President’s Pride Luncheon, complete with a rainbow walkway, reminding us that all Hawkeyes are welcome, equal, heard, and included. In 2018 she once again launched a new tradition by displaying flags of all the nations represented in the Hawkeye community on the Iowa River bridge.

Mary’s eye for beauty and inclusiveness lifts us up and brings us together.

Mary is not one to seek the limelight, but her impact is immeasurable. Once in a while, it’s our turn to do something for her! We hope that she can hear our resounding gratitude and love.

ADRIEN WING We honor Adrien Wing, Bessie Dutton Murray Professor of Law and Associate Dean for International and Comparative Law Programs at the University of Iowa College of Law for the international reach of her legal work, for her national impact of issues of race and gender, and for her caring work with students and members of the community.

Few Iowans have more global engagement than Adrien Wing. She has advised “the founding fathers and mothers” of the South African, Palestinian, and Rwandan constitutions. Wing is the leader of the College of Law’s program in Arcachon, France and has led the College’s London program. She is critical to the College’s connections with the Republic of Kosovo – giving opportunities for students to work on international treaties.

Professor Wing is a recognized and award-winning presence on the national level. She is the author of eight books and hundreds of chapters, articles, conference proceedings, and presentations. She is truly an inspirational speaker. She is at the forefront of critical race feminism. She is a mentor to minority faculty across the country.

Beyond her public contributions, Adrien Wing has always provided support, counsel, and care to her many students, especially students of color and international students. She goes out of her way to assist students in our international program — for example, providing a trip to a grocery store and helping students on their first trips abroad to have enriching and educational experiences. This personal touch is heart-warming. We are proud to be her friends and colleagues.

JENNA BERENDZEN, ARNP, DNP, PMHNP-BC, FNP-C Jenna has a big heart and has always been driven to help others in need. This is what brought her to nursing, eventually becoming a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and a family medicine nurse practitioner.

Jenna began her career as a staff nurse where she focused on patient care in a hospital setting. Eventually, she moved into public health nursing where her work focused on reproductive health and pregnancy prevention in diverse populations. This experience led her to earn a degree as a family nurse practitioner specializing in women’s health. She continued her work caring for patients in family planning and reproductive health. She expanded her training and earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Psychiatry.

Jenna’s training in psychiatry and extensive work in reproductive health helped her gain knowledge and expertise in understanding how hormones and life transitions, such as pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause, affect a person’s overall mental health and wellness. Today she sees herself as a partner in her patients’ wellness journeys. She wants patients to know that they’re not alone in the journey, and that she will help carry the light in times of darkness and pain.

Jenna’s love is larger than life. Being friends with Jenna means an immediate answer to an urgent call, a bonus parent to your children, an authentic friendship that runs deep and is filled with empathy, compassion, and kindness.

Jenna is a blessing to her entire community. The world is more magical thanks to her.

HEATHER GUNDERSON Paving the way and gaining attention and respect across her industry describes Heather Gunderson. Heather is an expert in CPA Services, especially in Gifts, Trusts, and Estate planning and taxation. Heather was the first female Partner with the firm Bergan Paulsen, now BerganKDV. Since that honor, she has continued to focus on D&I initiatives and inspiring other females to achieve excellence.

Heather is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Iowa Society of CPAs, and the Black Hawk County Estate Planning Council. She also volunteers with Exceptional Persons, Inc., the University of Northern Iowa Foundation, and Tate’s Army. Heather is an amazing professional, mother, wife, and inspiration.

JEANETTE DOSTAL Intelligent. Passionate. Caring. These are words used to describe Jeanette Dostal, a 24-year member of UFG Insurance who successfully manages our most profitable region today.

Throughout her career, Jeanette has shown a constant willingness to help wherever and whenever she can. From establishing a new service center division for policyholders to partnering with regional managers to collaborate on best practices, Jeanette is committed to continually moving UFG forward.

“One characteristic that makes Jeanette unique is her ability to see the big picture, yet still master the details of a tactical plan to get us from where we are today to where we want to be tomorrow,” says UFG Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Wilkins.

A people-centered leader, Jeanette has been recognized for fostering a positive and productive workplace culture within her region, empowering her team to deliver outstanding customer service to our independent insurance agents.

While Jeanette is known for providing good direction to her team at UFG, she doesn’t always apply that to herself. “On a funny note, Jeanette is very directionally challenged,” added Ruehle. “Asking her how to get anywhere or following her somewhere is a real hoot.”

SONI HARNEY The daughter of a WWII veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, Soni Harney learned firsthand about hard work, perseverance and caring for people from both her father and mother. She began her banking career in 1979 as a teller and has advanced to Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at MidWestOne Bank. Largely due to Soni’s leadership, the company has been named to The Des Moines Register’s Top Workplaces list seven years in a row and counting! She has led the team through mergers and acquisitions and numerous initiatives including Blue Zones Workplace Certification, the MidWestOne Leadership Institute, and implementation of the new Paid Time Off program.

Community involvement has always been important to Soni. She currently serves on the ICR Talent Acquisition Council and the Board of Directors for 100+ Women Who Care. One of her most notable recent contributions to the Iowa City area is working with area non-profit groups conducting talent searches for new CEOs. She also spent many years actively involved in the Iowa City Athletic Booster Club. Soni was named a Corridor Business Journal “Woman of Influence” in 2015.

Soni is infinitely proud of her two sons, Brock and Drew, and she will excitedly tell you that spending time with Nora and Jack, her grandchildren, is the greatest thing ever!

BETH BROWN Beth Brown is greeted with smiles whenever she is out and about in Iowa City. Her 18 years as the music teacher at Longfellow Elementary School has endeared her to many students and parents who happily greet her when they meet. Beth’s love for her students, her energy, creativity, quick intelligence, and musical skill lead her students into the enjoyment and appreciation of music.

Beth started on the path to be a teacher when she was nine years old. She and a friend organized and taught a summer preschool for neighborhood children. Grateful parents paid 25 cents per day. It was very successful! This path eventually led to Italy, where Beth taught English to Italians in a private language school for a year, then back to Iowa City and Longfellow School. She has also taught music part-time at several other schools, including City High.

She loves her job!

Beth’s love for choral music led her to become the co-director of the Iowa City Girl’s choir ten years ago. In addition to teaching music, and being a homemaker and mother, Beth has earned a master’s degree and PhD in educational psychology. She teaches two courses in Ed. Psyc. at the University of Iowa each year. She also helped organize and was Executive Director of the Nolte Performing Arts Preschool for five years.

Family is very important to Beth, and she loves to have get-togethers with family and friends. She is a wonderful teacher, mother, daughter, sister, and friend!

ELIZABETH BERNAL Elizabeth Bernal is the mother of five children who describe her as “courageous, humble, and caring”, and they will tell you she came to the United States to give them a better life. Those in the Latino community she has helped and supported through unselfishly offering her time, her knowledge, and her effort will tell you she has given them a better life as well.

Unaddressed needs make Elizabeth restless. Those unaddressed needs led her to help found the Eastern Iowa Bond Project, to gather backpacks and school supplies for children who lacked them, to assist two single mothers through the process of home ownership with Habitat for Humanity, to speak at rallies highlighting immigration, and to embrace community members who have been marginalized. Elizabeth has helped to address needs through DVIP, the Iowa City Schools, St. Patrick’s Church, Open Heartland, and by means of her own networking. She casts a wide net. She is everywhere and her children are by her side, learning how to serve and how to build trusting relationships as they help their mother do her work.

Elizabeth is truly a valued member of our community and an inspiration to us all as she demonstrates her belief in our shared humanity through her selfless acts of kindness and love.

DANETTE KENNE A leader in higher education for over twenty years, Danette Kenne brings a vast amount of knowledge and wisdom to her role as Assistant Dean for Graduate & Professional Programs within the College of Business & Public Administration at Drake University. Having completed the Drake Executive Leadership Program this spring, Danette advocates for continuous personal and professional development for her staff and peers. She is a wonderful mentor and role model to all women.

In addition to her role at Drake, Danette has served as a board member for the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute and the Iowa Women’s Foundation. She earned her Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa.

Danette lives in Urbandale, Iowa with her husband, Patrick, and daughter, Bekah.

As Barb Baker’s daughter, I’ve witnessed all she does for others, seen and unseen. She coached my AAU teams, served as president of the local youth baseball and softball association, and directed the high school prom committee.

In addition to her official positions, she also had many unofficial duties: muddy cleats were always clean before the next practice and my clothes-hanger solar system project was perfectly symmetrical.

She was the mom who organized carpools and made the best ham balls and brownies (both a top request at gatherings). More importantly, my mom served as a role model by fulfilling her own passions. As an empty nester, she returned to school and earned her MBA. Her attitude about self-investment and education influenced decisions my brother and I made to continue our own education with post-graduate doctoral degrees.

My mom is a shining example of a woman who has made a difference. She never missed an event or parent-teacher conference. At the same time, she valued our family time and we enjoyed dinner together every night.

These small, consistent things have had a profound impact on my life and have set the foundation for the family’s newest generation, my son. I know that “being a parent is the responsibility, and being the grandparent is the reward,” and I can say with certainty that my mom has earned the reward.

Barb Baker is one of the best things that has happened to Grinnell, Iowa. She involves herself in areas that she is passionate about and it shows. I had the pleasure of working with her on the Imagine Grinnell Board, and the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation Marketing Committee was always impressed by her organization and drive to want to make Grinnell better.

She always goes the extra mile and it amazes me how she can wear many different hats and still keep one of the most contagious smiles on her at all times. I’m a better person because of my friendship with Barb.

Dodi Reilly

Barb has devoted her career to Grinnell Mutual. She’s currently the Director of Advertising and Community Relations and is the face of Grinnell Mutual, maintaining important relationships in the industry, in the community, and across many organizations.

Barb leads many of the company’s efforts to make the world a better place, including the Road to Success program, the Grinnell Mutual Group Foundation, and Partners in Education.

Beyond her contributions at work, Barb has dedicated more time than most of us can imagine to making a lasting impact on the community through her personal involvement in activities and organizations that focus on education, athletics, and sustaining her community.

Groups that have benefited from Barb’s involvement include the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation, Leadership Iowa, Social Entrepreneurs of Grinnell, and the Iowa Sports Foundation.

LESANNE FLIEHLER What is important to know about Lesanne Fliehler: She stays globally informed and provides financial assistance to groups that provide services to people in poverty, areas of violence and oppression, and women and children.

She stays knowledgeable about national issues and politics, again supporting groups that increase access to services for those in need of food, shelter, or clothing. She understands and supports the need for equitable access to healthcare, childcare, legal assistance, and education.

She acts locally by canvassing for political candidates, writing postcards to legislators, volunteering for groups to package and supply food to those in greatest need, participating in marches for peace and justice, purchasing Holiday presents for families who cannot do so, helping with clothing drives, working at the Iowa City Animal Shelter, coordinating fundraisers, and cheerfully providing assistance whenever asked. She also provides funding for local initiatives and serves on boards that have great impact on our community, such as Women’s Resource and Action (WRAC), Riverside Theatre, and currently volunteers for TRAIL. Lastly, she is a constant and loyal friend, who will organize others to provide meals for sick friends, bring needed supplies to support anyone in crisis, and transport friends to doctor’s appointments, surgeries, or just to help retrieve a car from the repair shop. She does all of this joyously. She has helped us become better individuals by modeling the behaviors we hope to engender in ourselves and she has been, and continues to be, a constant positive influence on our lives.

YESSICA RICHARDSON Yessica Richardson is a single mom of three, born on St. Marten Island.

After fleeing domestic violence, a fire took her home along with everything she owned in 2017. With all paperwork, passport, and IDs burned, Yessica had no way to provide a living and no local support system. As the road showed impossible, Yessica never gave up. Moving into House of Hope, Yessica worked hard to fight the obstacles in her path. Today, Yessica has solid employment, permanent housing, her driver’s license after overcoming a language barrier, her very own first car, won an expensive custody battle, and is fully financially self-sufficient.

Yessica, we see you, your beauty, and your incredible strength, and we are inspired by you every day.

KRISTIE FORTMANN-DOSER Kristie Fortmann-Doser was named Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in April 2004. She’s worked in the domestic violence and sexual assault fields for over 30 years. She has a BA in Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Iowa and is a Certified Victim Advocate.

Kristie is currently a member of the Iowa Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault. She’s a former President of the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault and co-authored and authored statewide Ethical Standards and training materials for domestic violence programs, sexual assault programs, and healthcare professionals. Additionally, Kristie was on the statewide steering committee that developed Iowa’s Batterer’s Education Program.

Kristie’s research examines the efficacy of domestic violence shelters and the disproportionate impact of shelter closings on marginalized populations, with specific focus on African American women and women struggling with poverty that have been battered by an intimate partner. Considered an expert in this field, Kristie has presented to area, regional, and national audiences concerning the nature and incidence of violence against women, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Kristie has been vetted and provides expert testimony for civil and criminal cases in the Iowa Judicial system, testifying for more than two dozen cases.

Over the years Kristie has mentored and fostered the growth of countless advocates and social justice warriors with compassion, honesty, and grace. A vast community of individuals has found themselves safer and better for having known her.

SANDI HANNA Sandi Hanna is a remarkable woman, in both her generosity of spirit and the ferocity of her love for others.

She freely gives of her time, reading with students in an elementary classroom in Mount Vernon, spending hundreds of hours preparing educational materials for students at Bowman Woods Elementary in Cedar Rapids, and serving as the Linn Grove Church treasurer for over 20 years. She gives her time to friends, caring for neighborhood kids when they need a safe place to go after school. She spends countless hours gardening, sharing produce with coworkers, neighbors, and friends. She gives because she loves to give, receiving joy as she grants it to others. As she so humbly gives, so she becomes a gift to all of us.

Sandi is the best grandmother anywhere. She loves her five children and ten grandchildren with a fierceness that belies her gentle nature. Her kids know without a doubt that they are loved unconditionally, which has given them a sense of safety in her presence. She has taken the time to get to know each grandchild individually, and goes out of her way to make them feel cared for and special.

Her example is an inspiration to all who know her, as we seek to follow her lead as generous, loving citizens in our own communities.

DEBORAH (DEB) HOFFMAN While her heart is forever on the stoop in Queens and her soul in the deserts of the Southwest, we have the wonderful fortune of Deborah Hoffman living in Iowa with us, making our lives and the lives of countless other women better. Deb is a woman of integrity, pride, and perseverance. She is highly intellectual, incredibly hard working, and subversively powerful in her efforts toward empowering women. She is a genuine, eclectic soul. She is a feminist and principessa. She is bold and darling. She is authentic and traditional. She is intuitive and tenacious. She is hilarious and deliberate.

Deb embodies adventure, from trekking across Europe, India, and Mexico with family and friends to scaling tall buildings in Iowa City wearing red and white striped socks to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House. Deb is a wife, doggie mama, daughter, sister, friend, and social advocate. She is fiercely loyal to her family, her pups, her friends, and the causes she champions. She is deeply caring and protective and boldly defends those in her circle. Deb Hoffman is a force of life, love, strength, stubbornness, curiosity, and passion!

KATHY COURTNEY Kathy Courtney is the Chief Operations Officer for GreenState Credit Union.

When you meet Rachelle, you will remember her! She is a splendid example of a woman who balances her devotion to her family, her faith, and her caretaking in the community.

You will remember she is hard-working and dedicated and professionally daring. Her undimmed spirit is present in all that she does, and she does it with kindness and caring.

KARLA FULTZ MCHENRY In 2007 a group of dedicated women united in the belief that a strong community supports strong women. Karla Fultz McHenry led that group to create a female-centered, feminist nonprofit agency in Des Moines – GEEZ Louise! (Growth, Education and Empowerment Zone).

Karla knows all about empowerment and strong women. Her mother began practicing law in 1969 and served as a Polk County judge. When Karla founded her nonprofit, the name she chose paid tribute to Louise Noun, a legendary strong-minded woman.

Karla’s mind is as strategic as it is strong. She is adept at leading organizations through transformational leadership and strategic direction-setting. She served as a division administrator and legislative liaison for the Iowa Department of Human Services, then led the state legislative and federal advocacy staff as Vice President of Public Policy for the Iowa Medical Society.

Always looking for new challenges, and undaunted by risk, Karla started her own consulting business nearly ten years ago. The successful business she owns and leads provides public policy advocacy and consultation. She represents her clients with integrity and passion; her strategic focus leads to positive outcomes.

In countless ways, the outcomes derived from Karla’s public policy work have made the lives of Iowa women and girls healthier, safer, and more equitable.

SARAH ORDOVER How many women could turn a casual conversation over wine into the revitalization of a flood-ravaged neighborhood and economic incubator for small businesses? Sarah Ordover could – and did – when she spearheaded the establishment of NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids.

In March 2009, Sarah and a group of friends were having a lively conversation covering (among many topics) flood recovery efforts, the lack of entertainment options in the dreary pre-Spring weather, and what fun it would be to have a public market like those we had all seen in larger cities. Excitement built among the group over that last item, and Sarah ran with the idea.

The very next day, Sarah contacted people she knew who were connected and involved in the community to bounce the idea and determine if the project had merit. And it did! Soon Sarah had put together a powerhouse board and started the work of establishing a new 501(c)(3) that would eventually create and open the NewBo City Market in October 2012.

Sarah was a passionate champion, a strong leader, and a tireless fundraiser to make NewBo City Market a reality. She attended City Council meetings to garner support for the project, spoke to community organizations to educate and get input, met with State officials to discuss funding, and ultimately spearheaded a successful $6 million capital campaign to build the market.

Today NewBo City Market is the heartbeat of a thriving business district and a wonderful addition to the Cedar Rapids Community. Thank you, Sarah!

Driven by her knowledge of Perceptual Control Theory and her passion for leading children and adults to a path of success through positivity and compassion, Andrea became the principal of Orchard Hill Elementary. SANDY STEIL Sandy is the definition of a true community partner. Aside from excelling at her day job in land planning and development with MMS Consultants, she excels at connecting individuals and entities for collaboration on projects and opportunities in a way that I’ve rarely encountered. She seeks to make her community better every day, brick by brick, bit by bit, and person to person. If she doesn’t know the answer, she knows who does or can find out.

Recently, Sandy created the Home Improvement Confidence Course for women. The course title is a throwback to the Confidence Course she went through during Air Force basic training. This course instills knowledge and empowers students on various home improvement projects. During the process of remodeling, women are introduced to tools, techniques, and materials used during construction. Working in a remodeling environment exposes them to the challenges and obstacles they will inevitably face outside of class.

“I’ve heard many women talk about how they would like to learn about construction however are scared to take classes because it is usually all guys… that’s intimidating for most women. A lot of women would like to buy a home but can’t afford anything that doesn’t need a little work. Housing isn’t cheap anywhere around Iowa City, the older stock homes are your best bet for getting something affordable, but that means a little bit of fixing up.”

Sandy is truly an inspiration to women everywhere and we are lucky to call her colleague and friend.

SHARON JUON Iowa is blessed that Illinois native Sharon Juon chose ISU for college, where she met her husband Dave. They settled in Waterloo to raise their twin daughters, Jennifer and Lindsay. Sharon was the Executive Director of the Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governments from 1988–2013.

During that time, she held offices (including President) on the Board of the National Association of Development Organizations for five years. A member of the Cedar Valley United Way for 17 years, Sharon was Chair, Campaign Chair, and the Co-Founder of Women’s Philanthropy Connection.

She spent twelve years on the Black Hawk County Gaming Association, license holder for the Isle of Capri. In addition, Sharon served on 40 other boards and professional associations.

A loyal ISU alum, Sharon served for 15 years on the Foundation Board. She’s a Sustaining Life Member of the Alumni Association after serving for six years on their Board of Directors, serving as chair in 1992. Involved in many areas, she is approaching her 30th year on both the Board of Governors and Order of the Knoll.

In 2010, Sharon coped with the sudden death of her beloved husband and the diagnosis of Stage 4 Breast Cancer. Sharon’s courage, inner strength, and positive attitude are obvious when looking at her community involvement since then. Most notably, she was elected to the Waterloo City Council as an At Large member in 2018 and serves as the Mayor pro tem. She remains a devoted mother and the grandmother of Emily and Megan.

Faye Swift is a force of nature, a force that has guided her and her teams for the last 30 years. She embodies all of the qualities of a great leader; she is driven, smart, kind, thoughtful, straight to the point, and most importantly, she treats her staff like family. She is also a devoted mother, best friend to many, and the best yia-yia around, to borrow the Greek word for “grandma.” Faye has always put people first, and it has shown with her success both personally and professionally.

Faye grew up in Chicago, in a proud and loving Greek family. The oldest of six siblings, she learned quickly the value of being a leader. Fueled by a free spirit and a need to break out of her chosen path, she broke the mold and moved to Iowa to attend Cornell College.

She found comfort in Iowa; she loved the land and the people. She has lived here ever since.

After selling groceries for Hawkeye Foods, she decided to blaze her own trail and open up her first restaurant, Sluggers Sports Bar & Grill. The path was not easy for women entrepreneurs in the late 80s; Faye was even told by local bankers that she should stay home with the kids. Her parents helped her along with the SBA to secure her first loan. While the path was difficult, she believed in her vision for a neighborhood restaurant and succeeded in bringing her dream to life. Sluggers opened to the public in 1988 with much fanfare and success. Sluggers was the first true sports bar in the area, and it was owned by a woman. To this

day, people still come up and ask her about Sluggers, the food, the staff, and the stories. She wasn’t in the food business, she was in the experience business, and people loved her for it.

Sluggers was lost to the great flood of 2008. It was a devastating blow that hit hard on many levels; however, Faye is one tough cookie. Her touch with people, her drive, and her energetic attitude kept the family in tack. She decided, after much debate, to open a new location with her son, Matthew. She was awarded the Phoenix Award from the SBA and used that money to open Reds Alehouse in North Liberty.

Her vision for the neighborhood community gathering spot remained strong and the community responded.

Reds Alehouse won many awards, including the best restaurant in The Corridor three times. The success at Reds spun off multiple other locations that she helped design and launch in the community.

As a woman, Faye has broken through barriers throughout her career and life. She inspires others to reach for their dreams and not take no for an answer. Her famous quote “not preparing is preparing to fail” still haunts us in our dreams! She is a legend in hospitality and is a fabulous human.

ARLENE PARKER Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust honors Deb Gertsen, Senior Vice President, Trust & Investments, for her leadership and tireless efforts to improve financial literacy and well-being in our community. With nearly 40 years of experience, Deb uses her knowledge of investments and financial planning to make an impact far beyond her professional practice.

She’s volunteered assisting individuals enduring financial hardships beyond standard investment advice. In cases of death, divorce, or financial hardship, she spends many hours counseling, analyzing, and coaching with no payment other than the sincere thanks of those who didn’t know where else to turn. She’s a founder of CRBT Women’s Network, and served in various capacities for United Way, Kirkwood Alumni Board, American Heart Association Circle of Red, Meth-Wick, and Horizons.

There are some people that come into your life by chance. That person that is a mentor before you even know she is providing guidance and support. The kind of person that shows you how to climb through adverse situations with grace, and always keeps her chin up. That woman who shares a friendly smile and a big hug, who never forgets your birthday, plays games until all hours of the night, is a continuous learner, shares insights about many things, and can share a hearty laugh until you are in tears. MARGARET N. REESE Margaret Reese has long been an asset to her hometown of Iowa City. In everything she does, Margaret brings commitment to mission, openness to change, and great personal flair.

In her professional roles in not-for-profit settings, Margaret has provided inspiration, optimism, and forward-looking leadership, and she has worked passionately to connect people with causes they care about. She has served as Director of Development for the College of Liberal Arts at the UI Foundation and as Manager of Development and Marketing for Iowa City Hospice. Margaret’s longest standing professional commitment has been to Mercy Iowa City, where she is President of Mercy Foundation and Director of Communications. When 2020 threw a curve ball in the form of COVID-19, Margaret became a key member of Mercy’s Incident Command Team.

Margaret has served on many local nonprofit boards, including the Senior Center Commission, Iowa City Noon Rotary Club, Altrusa Club, Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Honoring Your Wishes Advisory Board.

In 1996 Margaret even took on the sprawling assignment of organizing the Olympic Torch trek through Iowa City, and she’s been generous with her time and talents ever since.

At the same time, Margaret has raised three dynamic daughters, reflecting the values she learned from her parents, John and Gail Nothnagle. Today she never misses a chance to spend time with her seven grandchildren, and no portrait of Margaret is complete without her husband, Dennis Reese, sharing time at home with their standard poodles, Ruby and JuJu.

ELIZABETH POPPLEWELL Elizabeth Duff Popplewell is a beloved priest at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. For the past ten years, she’s been a blessing to her parish and this community.

Elizabeth has affirmed St. Luke’s as a welcoming church where everyone is invited to fully participate in worship, believing “it is the Lord’s table, not the Episcopal table” and preaching the church’s mission extends beyond the church walls. She’s led St. Luke’s to become a lifeline to the Cedar Valley community, especially the underserved and overlooked. Elizabeth inspires St. Luke’s to participate in the Cedar Valley Pride Fest in Waterloo, where they distribute “Jesus loves you. No exceptions.” stickers. Elizabeth facilitated the creation of the “Neighbor-to-Neighbor Food Pantry”, which functions as a satellite of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Elizabeth serves her parish and the greater Episcopal Diocese of Iowa with love and compassion, and is one of the “go-to” priests for leadership. She meets with parish children each week, has led high school students on pilgrimages across the country, and has twice visited southern Africa in support of companion Episcopal dioceses. Prior to her ordination, she was an active member of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and served as the chapter president.

Elizabeth is a loving and supportive daughter, sister, wife, and mother. She’s raised two wonderful children, Taylor and Jared, and is a rock of support for her husband, Dennis. Elizabeth is the inspirational matriarch of their family – a family that will soon welcome their first grandbaby.

BRIA MARCELO As Director of the Diversity Resources at The University of Iowa, Bria Marcelo shifts and maintains a campus culture that’s more inclusive, welcomes diversity, and increases dialogue across difference.

Many have benefited from her application-based workshops that illuminate ways in which bias works. Her passion is contagious, inspiring participants to build skills and contribute to making communities more welcoming and inclusive. Her impact extends beyond the University and US borders. She’s worked as a teacher and mentor in Shanghai, China and continues to ensure diversity initiatives are integrated into the broader community. Bria’s work is rooted in evidence-based practice and centralizes the voices of marginalized populations.

MARY STRANG Friends and family have described Mary as “one of the most selfless and loving people” they’ve met, as someone who’s “touched so many lives”, and as a nurse who “truly has a huge heart for the women [she] takes care of”. After 40 years in women’s health at UIHC, Mary retired this past year.

Her generosity and kindness continue in her personal life as a fabulous mother, friend, sister, and woman. She is the first to help when others need support.

In retirement, Mary hopes to pursue her musical passions in the Court Hill Wind Quintet, Zion Lutheran Church Brass Choir, UI Faculty Orchestra, and the Iowa City Community Band. She’s also looking forward to getting more involved with women’s organizations in the area.

BARB PRATHER Barbara Prather is Executive Director of Northeast Iowa Foodbank in Waterloo, Iowa, and has held this leadership position for more than 20 years. Prior to this, she worked for Capitol Area Food Bank, Inc. in the Washington, DC area. While in her current position, she has grown the capacity of the foodbank significantly, including a multimillion-dollar capital campaign to expand to new facilities to be able to serve even more people in Northeast Iowa. Barb is active in many clubs and has served in numerous leadership positions in the community. She is very passionate about helping the food insecure and has an exceptional work ethic. Since moving back to Waterloo, she has had a tremendous impact on the community and is considered a go-to person to get things done. She is a graduate of Concordia College and has a certificate in nonprofit management from George Mason University. On a personal note, Barb is married to Jim and has a daughter, Steph, who is attending University of Northern Iowa.

OUR WORK

Resilience – Recovery – Reward RESILIENCE

Iowa has a child care crisis. This crisis directly correlates to women’s ability to achieve economic self-sufficiency and prosperity. In Iowa communities, child care has become unaffordable, inaccessible, or nonexistent. This crisis impacts all of Iowa’s women but especially those in low-income families. The child care crisis keeps women from entering and remaining in the workforce and keeps women from the education and training they need to upskill and attain economic prosperity. To address the child care crisis, IWF and its community partners established the Building Community Child Care Solutions (BCCCS) collaborative.

The BCCCS collaborative is the only program of its kind in the state of Iowa. It is a network of 30 communities, engaging in collaborative, solution-driven efforts that are research-based and community-led. Under our program and oversight, more than 650 volunteers — from business and community leaders, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, civic groups, philanthropists, and elected officials — are working together to increase awareness and explore innovative ways to promote child care investments that support families, businesses, and communities, both in the short and long term.

Through listening and learning, educating and engaging, the BCCCS collaborative brought people together from across the state to learn from each other and work together — saving time, money and energy, and providing collective intelligence and creativity to solve the child care crisis. Because of the BCCCS partners, this work has expanded from the original nine communities that identified child care as the priority barrier to women’s economic security, to over 30 communities, now working together to shatter the child care barrier and increase the availability of quality affordable child care across Iowa.

The IWF, along with partners Early Childhood Iowa (ECI) and Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R), is the convener, strategist, and voice for the collaborative and our strong direction and leadership provide accountability through two-way monthly reporting and communications with each community we work with.

RECOVERY

In a matter of weeks, the child care situation has become even more stark, as both licensed centers and in-home providers close their doors at alarming rates because of COVID-19. The economic destruction we are living through spotlights both how vulnerable and essential the child care sector is for our families, businesses, and communities. It is an economic driver that was crumbling little by little before the COVID-19 pandemic and it is suffering blows that will prove insurmountable for child care providers and set our work back for years.

Yet, we are leveraging the work we are doing and already preparing for recovery. We are well positioned to pivot our focus and use our tools, collaborative network, and community partners to stabilize and build on the work we have already done.

The BCCCS collaborative increases awareness and supports investments in community-led solutions to address the child care shortage. A statewide child care awareness campaign is being developed and implemented. Investments are being made through the Child Care Solutions Fund (CCSF) and the local level by businesses. Finally, additional tools are being created to help recruit and retain the child care workforce. Stabilizing and increasing the availability of quality affordable child care will increase mobility for ALL of Iowa’s female population to reach economic self-sufficiency.

REWARD

The BCCCS collaborative’s 30 communities will grow, and will be an informed, aligned, engaged, and collaborative network of local people working together to make and influence strategic decisions, regain the losses related to COVID-19, and invest to create a growing and sustainable child care sector. Business and community leaders’ understanding, as well as the general public’s understanding, of the critical role child care plays in our social and economic lives will become deeper. Strategies and activities will be grounded in research which are community-led and solution driven. Communities will have the leadership, strategic solutions, and tools needed to increase the availability of quality affordable child care and expand its workforce.

With a growing and sustainable child care sector, Iowa’s female workforce of 770,792 (pre-COVID-19) will grow, becoming more sustained and reliable. Post-COVID-19 working women need to have quality affordable child care available in order to return to the workforce after possible layoffs, furloughs, and reduced hours of employment. We must increase the availability of quality affordable child care to allow Iowa’s more than 121,000 families the ability and reassurance to confidently enter, remain, and/or return to the workforce. Finally, in keeping with our mission, this work will reduce the number of Iowa’s female-headed households living in poverty and struggling to make ends meet.

With the child care sector growing and sustainable, IWF will take the networks, framework, and tools created and use those resources to begin work on the next priority barrier. Ultimately, through these efforts we will eliminate the other five identified barriers to women’s economic self-sufficiency and prosperity.
