Pathway To Success This conference features a full range of informative, educational sessions that provide attendees with a path for learning about critical issues important to today’s ever-changing financial industry. Gain information on the economy, lending environment and much more from premium speakers. The Southeast Regional Directors’ Conference focuses on understanding the role of director, strengthening the team effort between management and volunteers, and the pursuit of organizational uniqueness. The Bluegrass State will provide conference attendees a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in distinctive opportunities. The horse racing industry and bourbon distilleries are the cornerstone of what makes Kentucky exclusive. In 2010 take advantage of the oppor tunity to join together with credit union board members throughout the Southeast region, including: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nor th Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, to help make a dif ference in the future of your credit union.
Speakers Chris Abely is the Senior Vice President of Specialty Distribution for CUNA Mutual Group. In this role he leads the Executive Benefits program and Long-Term Care product distribution for the company. Chris joined CUNA Mutual in 2002 when the company acquired Members Service Corporation, where he was the President and principal shareholder. Chris has served on a variety of boards, including three credit unions, where he has held positions of Chairman of the Asset/Liability Committee and Chairman of the Supervisory Committee. Patrick Adams is flat-out one of the most dynamic and
versatile credit union presenters around. He has devoted over 25 years to the credit union movement and has served as executive vice president of St. Louis Community Credit Union for more than fifteen years. He has also held various positions at other large Missouri credit unions, and has helped the Missouri League in developing numerous programs and projects.
Bob Larson is a Financial Solutions Officer in the
Credit Union Financial Solutions area at CUNA Mutual Group. As a Financial Solutions Officer, Bob helps credit unions understand the financial impact of CUNA Mutual’s products and services, and also consults with credit unions on the use of CUNA Mutual’s financial solutions.
Gary Montgomery has presented in front of audiences
for nearly four decades. He recently retired after a 35-year career as a television sportscaster. Today he continues teaching audiences as a trainer and keynote presenter. He started his personal speaking business 15 years ago and has addressed audiences all over the United States and beyond. Gary is both a motivational communicator and a storyteller. In his unique style he connects with the audience and demonstrates ways of stepping up to the proactive approach to life.
Debbie Painter began her career with credit unions in 1979
Carolina law firm of Smith Debnam Narron Drake Saintsing & Myers since 1994, following a sixteen year practice specializing in creditor’s rights, bankruptcy, and repossession law in Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Drake graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1975 with a B.A. with honors and with his law degree in 1978. He has practiced in North Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia and the federal courts of southern Indiana.

She currently serves on AACUL’s Political Involvement and Grassroots Committee and as Treasurer for the Kentucky Jumpstart Coalition for Personal Finance. Debbie received a B.S. degree from Sullivan University in Business Management and is a graduate of the Credit Union Management Institute (CUMI) and CUNA Management School (Madison, WI). Debbie is a certified BSA Compliance Specialist.

He has a doctorate in economics from the University of Colorado, taught at the University of Wisconsin, and was corporate economist for a Fortune 500 company.

As the Regional Director, Mr. Swann is responsible for coordinating the examination activities for over 1,700 federally insured credit unions in 12 states. Mr. Swann joined the National Credit Union Administration’s (NCUA) Chicago Region as an Examiner in Gary, Indiana in February of 1983, examining Indiana, Illinois and Missouri credit unions for six years.
Pre-conference Workshop
BSA Update for Volunteers Debbie Painter Boards of Directors must have adequate BSA/AML training in order to understand the requirements, the risks and the ramifications of noncompliance. This session is intended to give Volunteers an overview of the general requirements and the most updated information regarding the “hot” buttons for examiners in 2010: Risk Assessment Analysis, Member Due Diligence Program and Third Party Vendor Relationships. This is an excellent opportunity for those Volunteers who have not had previous training, and for those who have, to be updated on the changes and new expectations.

NCUA Update Alonzo Swann
Alonzo Swann will discuss regulatory issues and examination priorities that are impacting credit unions in the current economic environment. This is an opportunity to hear directly from the regulators and identify how it may affect your organization.
Executive Benefits Chris Abely
A board perspective on developing a retention/motivation strategy. This session will give board members the ability to understand the components that make up an Executive Benefits plan, from reviewing current compensation trends to understanding GAP analysis and shortfalls executives encounter in retirement.
The Many Pitfalls of Credit Union Mergers
Frank Drake Plenty of credit unions perceived merger as a fine method to expand their market share, furnish better services and returns for their member, and assure themselves long-term survival. Many discover after a merger that they have married in haste, to a “spouse” far uglier than they ever imagined, and with unexpected baggage besides. Mr. Drake will provide a general checklist to be added to any surviving credit union’s due diligence recipe. This list will permit suitors to discover surprises in advance that they would certainly discover after the merger is complete.

A graphic overview of the important elements of the economy and the dynamic path the economy is taking. What makes this valuable for credit union volunteers is seeing all the parts of the economy together in one place. Grasping the overall is by far the most difficult thing for most people. The snippets of daily news on TV and in the press do not provide the kind of “aha” experience you’ll have as you sit through this presentation.
A Baker’s Dozen...At Least 13 Ideas That Need to Stay on a Director’s Radar. Patrick Adams Now is the time. During my career, never have credit unions been in a better position. Rather than let the good times pass by without gaining market share, let’s kick it into gear. Here comes a potpourri of ideas that will keep moving the “ball down the court.” Come prepared to fill a notebook with ideas to carry back to your shop as possible strategies to help you own your market.

This session will provide an overview of credit union financial management principles which contribute to the financial viability of a credit union. Mr. Larson will help you understand the current economic environment and the impact it has on your Credit Union’s balance sheet.

Credit union board members are called on to define, teach, lead and share the pathway to success for their credit union and it’s members. As volunteer leaders you are asked to be mentors and guides and keep everyone on this path to success!

Woodford Reserve
Enjoy a “Picnic on the Porch” upon arriving at Woodford Reserve Distillery, one of Kentucky’s oldest distilleries, dating back to 1812. Once lunch is finished, you will tour the historic distillery where unique exhibits, historical photos and artifacts celebrating the living history of Kentucky Bourbon await you. During your tour you will see Woodford Reserve Bourbon being distilled in genuine copper pot stills, just like those on this site over a century ago. At the end of the tour, guests are allowed to taste the award-winning bourbon and browse the gift shop.

theatre performance of the play “Dear Friend: The Civil War Diary of Annie McCarroll Starling.” Next you will enjoy Kentucky artifacts within The Center for Kentucky History. This multi-million dollar museum and research facility houses thousands of treasures from Kentucky’s past.
Kentucky Horse Park
You’ll visit the KENTUCKY HORSE PARK, the only facility of its type in the nation, bringing the history of equine breeds from around the world to the famous Bluegrass Region. This 1,032 acre working horse farm features more than 30 breeds performing in the Parade of Breeds show, actual racing greats stabled in the Hall of Champions and a spectacular film presentation, “Thou Shall Fly Without Wings”. You’ll move about the park on foot or by horse-drawn carriage or surrey ride, visiting the blacksmith, harness maker, International Museum of the Horse, Calumet Farm Trophy Exhibit and a fine gift shop.

Come join the Director of Grounds at the Resort to hear about Griffin Gate’s Audubon Sanctuary Program. You will learn about the Audubon Certificate and how the Resort achieved this prestigious status. Scott Bender will share slides of the 213 beautiful acres that the Resort resides on. Some to include wildflower gardens, bluebird boxes, bat boxes and so on. If you have 45 minutes to spare you won’t want to miss this presentation.
