News, deals and people Retailers’ Choice Let’s Get it Clear Opinion: Graham Ewart Buyers’ Guide: Powerchairs

With such a huge choice of powerchairs on the market it is perhaps not surprising that a retailer’s recommendation of a particular product is influenced by the service it receives from a supplier. This was certainly the case with our Retailers’ Choice feature (p8) this month, which features some top powerchair recommendations. You can also discover a comprehensive guide to the best powerchairs on the market in the bumper Buyers’ Guide (p38). THIIS also meets Dallas Newsham, International Category Manager for Powered Mobility at Drive DeVilbiss, to reflect on the last 18 months and find out about more about the firm’s new and innovative products in this category. One person who is all about innovation is the inventor Ian Gray, Owner of Torbay Mobility. On page 16, Ian talks to THIIS about balancing his working life as an inventor of mobility products with managing a busy retail business. Meanwhile, on page 36, Graham Ewart, CEO of Direct Healthcare Group, discusses the importance of digital inclusion and why it needs to be allencompassing in order to be truly successful. On page 34, Dr Barend ter Haar takes an in-depth look at the hierachy of standards across the world for medical devices as they benefit us in the UK and reflects on their importance. As ever, THIIS is always interested to hear from mobility retailers with their news, so whether it is opening a new store, celebrating an anniversary or a new service contract, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

DHG acquires Vendlet ApS

Hampshire retailer helps fund community footie team

in brief...

Romsey-based Hampshire Mobility Services is helping to fund a children’s football team as part of a mobility service and maintenance contract. The retailer was awarded a service and maintenance contract of stairlifts and other mobility equipment with Abri, one of southern England’s largest housing providers. Part of the terms of the minimum three-year contract is for Hampshire Mobility Services to financially contribute a percentage of it into a ‘social value fund’, which provides support to local football club Millbrook FC and the work it is doing with grassroots football and community engagement. So far, Hampshire Mobility Services has invested just over £1,000 into the fund, which is helping to cover the costs of equipment, pitch hire and specialised training for young players to enhance their skills.

INVESTING IN CLEANER TECHNOLOGY Following trials with two vehicles last year, Medequip has taken delivery of six zero emissions electric vans to help with delivering community equipment across 21 London boroughs. With road vehicles identified as the leading cause of air pollution in London, Medequip stated that it wanted to respond positively by investing in clean air technologies. The Mercedes E-Sprinters chosen by Medequip produce no CO2 or NOx emissions and are amongst the cleanest vehicles in the world to drive.

Welsh medical device manufacturer Direct Healthcare Group (DHG) has completed the acquisition of Danish patient turning system manufacturer Vendlet ApS. Vendlet, based in Aabenraa, Denmark, has been developing and manufacturing award-winning powered patient turning systems for over 30 years. The acquisition of Vendlet adds a well-regarded product to DHG’s safe moving and handling portfolio, providing a holistic package of care for patients who are suffering from reduced mobility within the bed. DHG recently reported a 49.7 per cent growth in turnover for its latest financial year, which it partly attributes to the continued execution of its acquisition strategy.

WESSEX DRIVEABILITY OPEN AGAIN Following the theft of its specialist fleet of modified vehicles, Southampton-based Wessex DriveAbility has managed to re-open its disabled driver assessment services thanks to donations from local and national companies. Part of the national network of Driving Mobility Assessment Centres, Wessex DriveAbility provide ‘fitness to drive’ driving assessments for elderly and disabled people. With the majority of its specialist vehicles stolen following an aggressive break-in, however, the centre had been unable to provide vital support for drivers seeking independence.

Customer service win for Handicare Stairlifts Handicare Accessibility has received the Feefo Trusted Service Award for delivering outstanding customer experiences for its stairlift, homelift, and accessible bathroom customers. Handicare, working with Age Co, received the Gold award for the fifth year running, while Handicare’s direct selling arm, Companion, received its third consecutive Platinum award. The award is judged on independent reviews from verified customers to give the most reliable insights into the company’s customer service standards. The annual awards celebrate organisations who consistently go above and beyond to receive a genuine consumer rating of over 4.5 stars. David Harrison, Customer Experience Director at Handicare, commented: “Our teams put in an incredible amount of effort to provide outstanding customer service, and it’s fantastic to see those efforts paying off with this award. “We’ve invested in training and internal programmes for all service staff, as well as digitisation of processes to make our customer journey smoother and more efficient.”

Sarah Sutcliffe, Head of Customer Care at Handicare Stairlifts

ROSS CARE SUPPORTS ‘CLEAN AIR’ SCHEME Ross Care has taken part in an initiative set up by Sheffield Council to test how to utilise an electric vehicle van fleet. The goal of the ‘Clean Air’ scheme is to support local businesses in integrating electric vehicles into their fleets with the aim being to reduce air pollution from diesel vehicles in and around Sheffield. Light commercial vehicles, such as vans, contribute to over a quarter of emissions in Sheffield. Ross Care undertook a two-month trial of a Nissan Acenta, enabling it to explore the benefits of electric, experiencing EV (electric vehicle) charger networks and gain a better understanding of electric vans.

Stiltz partners with Podplan Stiltz Homelifts has partnered with Podplan, an innovative monthly subscription service offering information and support for people with elderly parents. The partnership offers an opportunity for Stiltz Homelifts to engage with a growing audience of decision influencers in the age-proofing process. Launched in early 2021, the Podplan portal pulls together all the information children of elderly patients might need to help their parents to live well in later life, into a single online service. Jackie Cleveland, Creator of Podplan, commented: “When people are searching for information they must be connected with brands which have integrity. “Every service we share with our members, must be exemplary. Being aware of Stiltz Homelifts can change a decision from selling to staying in the family home instead.” Stiltz Homelifts also recently announced accreditation to the Advanced Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS). To achieve this, Stiltz had to demonstrate strong compliance with essential industry regulations, sound management of current health and safety legislation, and sustainable business practices.

TERRY LIFTS WINS A LOT Lift manufacturer Terry Lifts has been appointed to the Bolton at Home Disabled Facility Adaptations Framework, a charitable community benefit society that provides help with disabled facilities, grants and adaptations for residents living in the Greater Manchester borough. Terry Lifts was awarded Lot 2, making it responsible for the supply and installation of through-floor and step lifts. Four contractors were appointed to the Lot, with Terry Lifts ranked number one. The successful tender, Terry Lifts stated, proved technical and commercial compliance. The framework period will be for four years.

Midwest Mobility appoints Technical Director

Recare preserves historic mobility carriage To preserve a piece of mobility history, Recare, a mobility equipment specialist, has acquired a rare three-wheeler 1951 Argson Electric power trike from Yorkshirebased Mathewsons Classic Car Auctions. The Argson Electric was produced by the Stanley Engineering Company – historically a market-leading manufacturer of hand, motor and electric transport for users with disabilities. Between 1924 and 1954, the Argson Electric was a pioneering vehicle with around 1,500-2,000 manufactured on a specialist production line in Surrey. The example now owned by the Recare family was the 799th produced and is one of only around 30 remaining worldwide. This particular ‘invalid carriage’ still displays its original chassis plate. Once restored to full working order, the Holland-Oakes family, owners of Recare, intend to display the museum piece at relevant mobility events. Richard Holland-Oakes, CEO and Co-Founder of Recare, said: “When you have a combined passion for engineering and mobility, the opportunity to acquire a historic disability vehicle cannot be missed in my opinion.”

Gloucestershire-based mobility equipment supplier Midwest Mobility has appointed Nick Cawcutt as its new Technical Director. Midwest Mobility will continue to build upon its 2021 expansion into the commercial care sector with Nick being responsible for overseeing all installation and servicing contracts. Nick has over 25 years of experience, having worked for

both mobility manufacturers and service suppliers. During this time he built up a vast technical knowledge of a wide range of mobility and care equipment and a full understanding of current legislation to ensure that equipment is operating and certified to meet regulations.

Medequip tunes into user feedback Assistive equipment supplier Medequip has announced that it is partnering with Your Voice in Health and Social Care (YVHSC), an independent organisation that gives people a voice to improve and shape health and social care services. Part of the 2022 partnership plans is to recruit a mixed panel of representatives across London to help improve its Community Equipment Service, which covers 21 London boroughs. Over 200,000 people in London use Medequip mobility equipment and aids prescribed by local social care and NHS services to support daily living. New monthly panel meetings will bring together service users, their relatives and carers with community experts, to help Medequip better understand their service. The key aim is to find out what works well, areas for improvement, and help jointly develop a plan of progression.

Ottobock UK welcomes new Business Manager Mobility equipment specialist Ottobock UK has announced that Keir French has joined its Human Mobility team as Business Manager. Powerchairs

Wondering which powerchairs are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? Each month, retailers in the mobility industry highlight one product that has stood out for them and why…

Retailer’s Choice: Jazzy Air Powerchair from Pride Mobility

Retailers’ Choice: Aviva RX40 from Invacare “There are many really good quality brands of power chairs on the market these days and so often the retailer’s perception of what is best is coloured by the service that dealer gets from his supplier. “Added to that, any retailer must be responsible and accept that any brand they take on requires a commitment Alastair Gibbs of training both sales and technical Managing staff and holding sufficient spares on Director of TPG the shelf to give the correct level of DisableAids service to the end-user. “For these reasons our choice would be the Invacare Aviva. Not only does it have a whole range of options and great performance, it is backed up by a great area manager. “The Aviva RX is not only extremely manoeuvrable for a rear wheel drive chair, it has the fabulous LINX control system which constantly learns the performance requirements of the user and auto corrects imbalances to give a smooth high performance drive. “The new style of seat suspension isolates the user from many of the bumps associated with driving on hard surfaces and can be really important for those sensitive to bumps and jolts.” tpg-disableaids.co.uk

8 / www.thiis.co.uk

“The Jazzy Air 2 powerchair continues to be a proven popular choice for our customers, providing them with superb independence, both inside and outside the home. “This elevating powerchair is unique to the market and is packed with a host of features to boost a user’s independence and social confidence. “The smooth stability of the chair allows the user to elevate to 12 inches in just as many seconds, providing face-to-face social engagement and greater independence for reaching different heights around the home. “The performance of the Jazzy Air 2 allows for easy manoeuvring with its mid-wheel drive and ‘activetrac’ suspension. Its turning radius of just 53cm is also a stand-out benefit for our customers, making for increased opportunities. “With a modern and sophisticated design, and available in a host of colours, the Jazzy Air 2 is great on the eye too, providing confidence and allowing the user to express their personality. “All in all, the Jazzy Air 2 ticks all the boxes in regards to performance, reliability, style, and comfort.” ableworld.co.uk

RETAILERS’ CHOICE

Retailers’ Choice: iGo Lite from Pride Mobility “As we start to move into spring, our customers are looking for a product that can allow them to get out and about but also easy to transport in the boot of their car. The iGo Lite carbon fibre folding powerchair, weighing just 19.8kg, is the perfect solution. “Its simple one-touch folding system makes it ideal for folding quickly and storing away. It has a lithium battery which is easy to remove for charging. It also has a built-in USB charger allowing you to travel and stay connected with the world around you. “It comes with a large secure underseat storage compartment and has the option to adjust the control position, making it comfortable for the end-user. “The iGo Lite comes in black carbon fibre and its flight-safe batteries means you can take it wherever you go in the world. “This really is a fantastic powerchair and we have confidence when selling the chair to our customers that they will love the product! It looks great on the showroom floor too.” Laura Hays Director of Thistle Help thistlehelp.co.uk

Retailers’ Choice: Ergo Traveller from Karma Mobility “This wonderfully compact, costeffective, foldable powerchair delivers on all key criteria customers now demand from this type of product. “We have worked with Mark Duffield and his team at Karma Mobility for many years now. The firm’s ability in delivering value adding quality products is first class, as is its dealer support ethos, which is outstanding. “This cracking little rear-wheeldrive powerchair is an attractive, lightweight, foldable solution, which handles superbly well within confined spaces whilst navigating expertly through narrow corridors and tight doorways. “It also offers a very reasonable range with just over 14km on 22Ah batteries. It’s worth bearing in mind that this machine can upgrade to 35Ah’s which deliver a solid 18km.

10 / www.thiis.co.uk

“It has many other decent features like attendant control, adjustable footrest hangers, flip-up armrests and a brilliant easy-toadjust angled backrest. However, two of its real defining features are, firstly, a patented seating design called Ergo, which offers tailored comfort and great postural support. “Secondly, the ease in which this little powerchair can disassemble and reassemble is user friendliness at its very best, and its only 26kg – awesome for such a solid and robust little powerchair.” mobilityscotland.co.uk

RETAILERS’ CHOICE

Retailers’ Choice: Super Heavy Duty Electric Wheelchair D09 from KWK

Retailers’ Choice: Quickie Q50R by Sunrise Medical “There are lots of folding powerchairs on the market, however the Q50R stands out due to its high range of up to 50km, robust design and ease of folding in one simple motion. “Due to its large rear wheels it is suitable for outdoor use, as well as indoor, unlike some others on the market. “Although not suited to everyone due to its lifting weight, it works well for clients that require a folding chair for storage or for those using a car hoist when transporting. “It has a modern design with a choice of colour trim and provides the user with a comfortable ride. The frame has a five-year warranty which provides peace of mind for the user.” classicmobility.org.uk Lauren Bromfield Occupational Therapist at Classic Mobility

12 / www.thiis.co.uk

“The D09 folding powerchair has an amazing 180kg carrying capacity, yet only weighs 26.5kg. It is made from aluminium alloy with a three-year frame warranty made with the best quality materials. “Solid front and rear tyres with a 4.5” ground clearance makes it comparable with top all-terrain models. Its two 250w quiet brushless motors give ultimate power while the flip-up arm rests are a good feature as many folding powerchairs have fixed armrests. “It has a foot plate rather than leg rests, making it ideal for users with swollen legs. Easily foldable, it has a onetouch system where you just press the lever and fold. It really is easy to do, unlike some models with pull cables on them. The folding dimensions are 60x36x79. “The chair comes with two 24v/6ah lithium batteries, which are chargeable on or off board, and give a 25km range. “There are two different width sizes, 18.5” or 21.25” – both of which come with either a fixed back or reclining back option. The reclining back is adjusted with a gas ram at the back of the seat. It is available in a choice of colours – silver, black, blue and red in the 18.5” seat width and black and silver in the 21.25” seat Karen Sheppard width. Managing Director “It has removable washable seat of People First cushions, with a fully adjustable Mobility tension seat and back to ensure the users comfort.” peoplefirstmobility.co.uk

RETAILERS’ CHOICE

Retailers’ Choice: Lectus Low Rider from Evo “It is not news that manufacturers and dealers have an industry-standard goal to keep a low seat-to-ground height in a powerchair. Within this, it is a competitive aim to achieve this, whilst having all the seating options available. Often due to clients’ height restrictions within their wheelchair accessible vehicles, it is difficult to achieve. “The Evo Lectus Low Rider focuses on those end-users who need the benefits offered by a particularly low seat height. “The combination of an exceptionally low seat height (41.5 cm) with the ability of a seat lift of 40cm and an extremely high battery capacity makes this wheelchair genuinely unique in the market. “The Evo Lectus Low Rider is a high-end electric wheelchair considering its modern design. The biomechanical leg and arm support make it easy for the user to make transfers. It is characterised by the combination of mobility with power and individual seat support.” recare.co.uk

Richard Holland-Oakes CEO of Recare

Retailers’ Choice: F5VS from Permobil “Deterioration caused to the body is often shown in office workers who are sat in front of a desk or a computer during their working career, and it is also prevalent in wheelchair users. This is why our choice would be the Permobil F5VS standing chair. “Utilising the highest quality engineering, Permobil has created a standing chair and seating solution that can be used for a multitude of mobility conditions. This is a chair, which truly gives clients more independence.” lifestyleandmobility.co.uk

RETAILER SPOTLIGHT

Torbay Mobility was established 21 years ago

Torbay Mobility: Putting the wheels in motion! Ian Gray established Torbay Mobility 21 years ago, a business providing sales, servicing and repairs of mobility equipment in Devon and beyond. Being situated in a popular tourist

16 / www.thiis.co.uk

destination, the shop is frequented by holidaymakers on staycation who may need to hire a mobility scooter or wheelchair, or to get their existing equipment repaired. Ian states: “There is generally an

Torbay Mobility Owner Ian Gray talks to THIIS about balancing life as the manager of a busy mobility store while also creating awardwinning inventions…

older demographic in the local area that Torbay Mobility serves and this is naturally beneficial to business. “Torbay is also an attractive tourist destination and this has allowed me to develop a hiring part to the

business, mainly for mobility scooters and wheelchairs. “Also, if holidaymakers bring their own wheelchairs and travel scooters, these may still need servicing and repairs even if they are on holiday!” Ian says that his bestselling products are mobility scooters, wheelchairs, walkers and stairlifts. He stocks products from various suppliers, such as Drive DeVilbiss, TGA Mobility, Roma, Electric Mobility, Pride, Vinyl Value and Strident. The shop also stocks a couple of Ian’s own patented inventions, the RollerScoot and BattBoost. In fact, it was through the proceeds of one of Ian’s earliest patented inventions, the shock-absorbing stick, that Torbay Mobility even came to be established… A NATURAL PROBLEM SOLVER Ian qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 1990 and after working in the NHS for a number of years he established his own private practice. Says Ian: “I was always interested in assistive technology and very often, whilst treating people, it was very useful to be able to issue various daily living aids, as they can work very well together to achieve the goal of increasing the patient’s overall mobility, independence and freedom, as well as pain reduction. “But the daily living aids were invariably standard-issue and not always the best for everyone. Being a natural problem-solver, if needed, I was able to modify them to make them more suitable or comfortable for the patient. “For example, walking aids hurt people’s hands, wrists and shoulders due to the impact of them striking the ground, and I often attached a softer material to the handles of the walking aids. “I then decided to take this a stage further and develop an actual shock absorber, hence the invention of the shock absorbing walking aid.” The proceeds from the sale of the shock-absorbing walking aid allowed Ian to establish Torbay Mobility, he says, and to develop more ideas and inventions.

Ian has sold, serviced and repaired mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs for over 20 years and says that he is continually coming up with ideas. Ian admits that the road from that initial ‘lightbulb’ moment to developing a product is never easy and there are many obstacles to overcome. He says: “Although I have visualised many new concepts, most never make it any further than in my own mind! And those that do have a series of challenges ahead but developing a working ‘proof of concept’ prototype has to be the biggest challenge to overcome because if the concept can’t have a practical application, it’s pointless to carry on. Even then, the working prototype has to fulfil the initial expectations at least, and better than expected is a bonus!” Ian continues: “Even if the working prototype works amazingly, it’s not all plain sailing by any means. For example, sourcing components for a new concept is always difficult, and some have to be made from scratch right up to the pre-production prototype stage. “Sometimes even more testing is required before the final product is reached, whilst all the time doing market research to ensure a great idea is also seen as a great product by the potential consumers.” There is also patenting to sort out as well before the eventual launch of a product. But it’s all worth it, says Ian. “The satisfaction comes from knowing that I have developed a unique product from a concept that I have visualised to a successful product that helps people overcome problems, makes their life easier and increases their independence and freedom.” Two inventions that did make it to launch successfully are the BattBoost and the RollerScoot, mentioned previously. AWARD-WINNING INVENTIONS Ian explains that he invented and developed the BattBoost to mitigate “battery trouble”, which he says is the most frequent cause of problems experienced throughout the life of a mobility vehicle.

“The satisfaction comes from knowing that I have developed a unique product that helps people overcome problems, makes their life easier and increases their independence” As Ian states: “The batteries are the lifeblood of any mobility vehicle, give the vehicle power and dictate how far the vehicle can travel. But they have limitations and in time they begin to age, especially if they are not charged regularly.” Noticing that removable mobility scooter battery packs are commonly 15-20kg in weight and often very awkward to remove for charging Ian set about developing a way to mitigate these issues with the BattBoost. His product, he says, has been designed to automatically provide additional power to a mobility vehicle as and when required during use (for instance, going up hills), it helps to

Ian says that he has had a good response to the BattBoost from his customers

RETAILER SPOTLIGHT significantly increase travel range by an additional 10 miles, on average, and usage time, while simultaneously maintaining optimised charge of the mobility vehicle’s batteries. Ian adds: “And if the batteries remain in a healthier state for longer, they last longer, leading to much less breakdown and a happier mobility vehicle user!” The BattBoost is a quarter of the size of a battery pack, weighs less than 2kg and is usually all that is required to be removed and charged (using the supplied lithium charger). Ian says that he has had a fabulous response to the BattBoost from customers. “It seems to be just what users of mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs have been waiting for after putting up with battery problems for years! “But it has also given the mobility sector a new exciting product, which

can only be good to increase revenue for stores, not only through BattBoost sales, but by encouraging greater use of mobility vehicles in general.” Another product for which Ian said filled a need was the RollerScoot. When Ian first conceived the idea of the RollerScoot seven years ago, he had in mind a cross between a mobility scooter and a wheelchair, but with the additional advantage of being able to stand. Internationally patent-protected, Ian says that the RollerScoot was the world’s first upright personal mobility vehicle. It has a 360-degree turning circle and folds up to go in the car boot. Ian explains: “Many people desire a greater level of independence than a conventional walker, wheelchair or mobility scooter can offer and that is exactly what the RollerScoot does. “It gives people a sense of freedom

“Owning and running a mobility business alongside my life as an inventor is actually very synergistic and a great advantage” and it allows them to feel included as they are at the same height and eyelevel as those around them.” Thanks to its lightweight aluminium frame, Ian says, the RollerScoot is easy to take apart and dismantles into three lightweight parts. “It will fit into a small car boot as well as being suitable for taking on public transport,” comments Ian. The design of the RollerScoot also allows for it to be easily attendantcontrolled, for instance, in nursing and residential homes. When it came out, the product scooped the ‘New Product of the Year Award’ at Naidex, the UK’s largest disability equipment exhibition Naidex at the NEC, in Birmingham. THE FUTURE OF MOBILITY Ian is unfazed about balancing his working life as both a shop manager and an inventor. He says: “Owning and running a mobility business alongside my life as an inventor is actually very synergistic and a great advantage, as it helps to enable me to come up with ideas through my knowledge and experience of mobility equipment or

encountering people’s problems. “It also gives me the opportunity for some initial essential ‘market research’ on potential customers, albeit in a way that doesn’t disclose the actual invention itself. “But once I have got to the stage where the patent has been filed, a more candid chat with customers is very useful to get an idea of my new product’s potential!” The pandemic has had an impact on Ian’s general mobility business over the past couple of years in various ways. But the key to survival has been diversification, Ian says, and to turn what appears to be a negative into a positive advantage if at all possible. He comments: “Although I had already started developing BattBoost before the start of the pandemic, even though I couldn’t actually go to the store to work, the lockdown allowed me to work from home and accelerate its continued development, and without so many of the usual distractions! “People were tending to staycation rather than travel abroad, which, being a natural tourist destination already, increased visitors to this area and also helped with the hiring part of the business too, as well as the servicing and repairs of their own mobility equipment. “I have also found that people were much more likely to phone first before venturing out, to ensure that I had what they looking for, and to avoid unnecessary journeys. And even then, it is more likely to be friends or relations that initially enquire.” Although footfall into the shop is not yet back to normal, pre-pandemic levels, Ian feels very optimistic about 2022, especially now that retail is opening up and there are fewer Covid-related restrictions. “I expect people will still tend to staycation more than they used to before the pandemic and also I think that people may have delayed purchasing mobility equipment, especially equipment used outdoors, and if so, that will lead to a welcome sales boost in 2022!” Ian thinks that the mobility products of the future will continue

to embrace advancements in technology, in new ways of thinking, making life easier for people, whilst keeping in mind the impact on their health and on the environment. “I come up with new ideas all the time but only focus on those that I feel will be of most benefit to people and solve the biggest problems. “No doubt I will develop more inventions into products in the future, and these will almost certainly be centred around technology, health, solving problems and making people’s lives easier.” For the mobility sector as a whole there will still be challenges to overcome over the next year or so, in the wake of Brexit and Covid in particular. Perhaps, and not surprisingly for an inventor, Ian says that new and

innovative products are key to helping it move forward. Ian concludes: “We need to keep the industry exciting and interesting, listen to customers’ needs, improve on present products and develop new products accordingly. That’s how we will keep the industry alive and kicking.” torbaymobility.com Ian would welcome enquiries from retailers and distributors, and also from manufacturers/investors to make the BattBoost a global success. He is also looking for investment, or collaboration with another company to develop a larger, more robust version of the RollerScoot for the international, commercial and rental markets. Drive DeVilbiss: Powered to succeed 24 / www.thiis.co.uk

Faced with increasing demand for powered mobility products, Drive DeVilbiss has been busy launching new products and coming up with innovative updates on existing models over the past year. THIIS meets Dallas Newsham, International Category Manager – Powered Mobility at Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare, to find out more…

DeVilbiss Healthcare for just over 12 months it has been a whirlwind of excitement, and I have worked on a number of key projects within the powered mobility range. “For me, new product development of the Autofold Powerchair has stood out the most, working closely with the R&D team to ensure specifications and features align with our customers’ needs to ensure user experience is positively enhanced.”

Drive is looking forward to meeting retailers face-to-face this year

The last two years have been incredibly busy for Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare in the UK, across its European international businesses and globally. As a manufacturer and distributor of a wide range of mobility products, bathing aids, beds, wheelchairs, respiratory and pressure care devices, the business responded to a huge increase in demand for vital medical equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic by ramping up production at its Halifax, Staffordshire and Leicestershire manufacturing sites. It also worked closely with its partners to increase stock of goods in the UK despite the global supply chain issues.

During the height of the COVID pandemic, there was a slowdown in the sales of many mobility devices, simply because people were encouraged to stay indoors and not travel; during this time, however, Drive DeVilbiss invested heavily in developing new and innovative products, especially in the powered mobility category. THIIS chats to Dallas Newsham, International Category Manager – Powered Mobility at Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare to find out more… WHAT PARTICULAR PROJECT HAS STOOD OUT FOR YOU DURING YOUR TIME WITH DRIVE? “Whilst I have only been with Drive

CAN YOU EXPLAIN MORE ABOUT HOW THE AUTOFOLD POWERCHAIR WAS DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO USER DEMAND? “Traditionally, powerchairs have been large and heavy; creating issues for users when needing to transport in a vehicle. New developments in this product group mean we are seeing more versatile and innovative options available to suit independent lifestyles, lighter materials, folding solutions and products that are easy to disassemble for transporting. “The Autofold Powerchair is a great example of these new developments; it folds and unfolds effortlessly to a compact size using its remote control, fitting easily into most car boots and is lightweight at only 28kg (excluding batteries). “Additional user feedback identified a need for improved comfort, again this has been a consideration when designing the Autofold; we have included shock absorbing front suspension for a smoother ride, foam heel covers and a perforated, padded backrest to better support users and improve overall comfort.

“For me, new product development of the Autofold Powerchair has stood out the most, working closely with the R&D team to ensure specifications and features align with our customers’ needs” www.thiis.co.uk / 25

SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT “It also includes an increased maximum user weight capacity of 150kg, which is particularly impressive for such a lightweight, compact powerchair. “The appearance of the powerchair was also highlighted as being important to users, and we really feel that we have developed a chair with a fresh attractive design, including a striking black finish frame and stylish black and silver wheel hubs.” WHAT WAS THE RESPONSE YOU RECEIVED FROM YOUR RETAILERS? “The response from our retailers has been incredibly positive. We have received a great deal of enthusiasm for the newly developed features. They’ve told us all about the great feedback when demonstrating the remote folding function, with their customers being amazed as to how easy it is to use. It’s wonderful to hear that these developments will really make a difference to user’s independence.”

The new Autofold Powerchair folds and unfolds with a remote control

LAST YEAR DRIVE ALSO ANNOUNCED THE LAUNCH OF THE AUTOFOLD ELITE SCOOTER. WHAT INSPIRED THIS? “Following on from the success of the Auto Folding Scooter launched in 2018, we identified a gap in the market for a premium model that would offer additional features and benefits. User comfort was a consideration when designing the Autofold Powerchair

“Inspired by our customer feedback, we worked closely with the R&D team to create a “hitlist” of fantastic new features. Customers told us that they would really like to see front and rear suspension, LED headlight, Delta tillerbar, a USP port and a modern appearance.” WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE HAVE YOU HAD TO THE SCOOTER? “We were delighted with the response to the product launch; retailer feedback was fantastic, and we soon struggled to keep up with the initial demand. “This was particularly pleasing as we were unsure how keen endusers would be to get out and about whilst in the middle of the pandemic. Despite the uncertainties at that time, it went on to be one of the most successful powered mobility product launches in recent years across the industry.” WHAT ARE THE POWERED MOBILITY BESTSELLERS FOR DRIVE? “The Folding Powerchair was a fantastic seller for Drive and we are hoping the new Autofold model with its many new features will experience even more success. “The Autofold Elite scooter has most definitely been the bestseller of 2021, followed by other favourites such as the standard Auto Folding and Dual Wheel scooters. “For our 8mph road-legal range

This new innovative premium model will bring something completely new and unique to enhance the Drive powered mobility range. I don’t want to say too much at the moment, but watch this space!” HOW HAS DRIVE MANAGED TO NAVIGATE THE CHALLENGES OVER ISSUES SUCH AS GLOBAL SHIPPING AND BREXIT? “The last 18 months have been challenging for all in the industry, in order to mitigate delays we are working closely with our partners to increase stock of goods in the UK, despite the global issues in supply chain, rapidly rising costs and increased complexities at our borders

due to the UK’s exit from the EU. “Our Global Supply Chain teams work to minimise delays; we have increased products and parts on order and adopted a multi-channel logistics approach to ensure a regular flow of stock to maintain inventory levels where we can. Ensuring regular communication with our customers regarding their orders and lead times has also been key during this time.” DO YOU THINK TRAINING SHOULD BE GIVEN TO RETAILERS ABOUT THE USE OF POWERED MOBILITY PRODUCTS? “It is very important that retailers are trained to use the products that they are selling. We offer various types of training to our retailers to ensure that they can use the product safely and understand all the key features, so in turn they can confidently demonstrate and train their customers. “We offer face-to-face and virtual training options and have a range of supporting documents including comprehensive user manuals, quickstart guides, spare parts lists etc.”

“There is one product that we are particularly excited about. This innovative premium model will bring something new and unique to the Drive powered mobility range.” WITH FEWER COVID RESTRICTIONS THIS YEAR, HOW IS DRIVE LOOKING TO ENGAGE WITH MOBILITY RETAILERS DURING 2022? “Our teams are able to safely visit customers face-to-face on a more regular basis now, while always following the latest government guidelines. Whilst we have been able to use and adapt with technology to contact customers, this year we will be super excited about visiting customers more often as well as attending more exhibitions and seeing retailers there too. “Of course, for customers who are not able to or who are less comfortable with face-to-face interaction our virtual routes remain open and we will continue to have our internal account managers alongside a national field sales team for local service and support. “Our commercial team pride themselves on providing the best support for our retailers with a skilled technical team behind them to offer a gold standard service.” drivedevilbiss.co.uk

Trade Thoughts How can retailers maximise sales of pressure area care products? This month, in an occasional feature looking at how retailers can maximise sales in different product categories, THIIS seeks the thoughts from leaders in the pressure care industry.

32 / www.thiis.co.uk

Graham Collyer

Jason Brown

Products designed for the prevention of pressure damage should always be guided by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. “In the age of the ‘informed patient’, mobility retailers have a key role in signposting customers to information that will help them in ensuring that they are using appropriate products. “Often pressure area care products available through the NHS or social care are limited according to what is on a local formulary. Members of a person’s care team can advise on alternatives, which can be bought themselves or by a family member. “Some mobility retailers employ qualified healthcare professionals who may be able to help in advising alternative products to those available locally. There is a key role for mobility retailers to make available appropriate products such as mattresses – dynamic or high-quality foam, cushions – designed to be used by clients according to their risk category, and heel protectors. “These could be stocked, or, more likely, a retailer will order products from a manufacturer on a next day delivery. Product manufacturers such as Sumed make available charts showing which cushions, mattresses and heel products are available for clients at different risk levels. Pressure mapping sessions can also be arranged. “The mobility retailer has a key role in ensuring that their customers are aware of the early signs of pressure damage, steps they can take in avoiding pressure damage and when to seek advice from a healthcare professional.

Visibility is important when it comes to pressure care products. Retailers should avoid having their product stuck away in a corner or on a poorly lit shelf. To maximise sales, retailers must have their product positioned front and centre. Suppliers may have point-ofsales materials to help, particularly if a retailer is actively promoting their range. “Product knowledge is important. Retailers need to know what they are selling inside out so that the products they recommend are fit for purpose. Try to become the local expert. Pressure care can be a complex area and it is important that the product being recommended is the right product for the client. Incorrect products can lead to major problems like pressure sores. “Retailers can find out from the suppliers they use whether they are prepared to run courses on their products, allowing you to become the local expert. “It is also a good idea to network with care homes, local authorities and the local health service in the area so you become the ‘go to’ person for their pressure care needs, when they have to signpost for self funders. “Product up-selling is recommended. If a retailer is selling a wheelchair, for example, a fit-forpurpose cushion can be offered at point of purchase. “Where possible, retailers should follow up with the client about how the product is performing and offer options should their condition worsen. This links back to my earlier point, where retailers need to become the local expert.

There is sometimes confusion in our specialist retail healthcare market between what is known as ‘up-selling’ and that of ‘cross-selling’. “Up-selling encourages a customer to spend more by buying an upgraded or premium version. “Cross-selling is about building additional products to the order. “So in the example of ‘do you want fries with that?’ it is not up-selling it is instead-cross-selling an additional item. “How often have we experienced this ourselves when we purchase from an online retailer and they make suggestions at check-out such as ‘other customers also purchased this as well?’ “One of the challenges for retailers in our specialist healthcare market is not always being able to talk to the actual user of the equipment, but rather the family who have been tasked to source products that they may have never encountered before – this experience is all new to them. “Another challenges is that of space. Reatilers need to have room in their showrooms to display full size mattresses and beds when discussing pressure care. “Pressure care products are a great opportunity for retailers to enhance their sales, however none of this matters if not just the needs but the needs-behind-their-needs are not established. These are based on circumstances and effects.

Pressure area care is often associated with care homes and hospitals, but pressure injuries resulting in pressure ulcers can be suffered in the home just as easily as in a care environment. “Pressure injuries are basically a result of extended periods of time in the same position, sometimes exaggerated by bony prominences of the body resting on insufficient support surfaces. These are notoriously difficult to manage once acquired and, without the appropriate solution, can lead to hospital admissions. “So how does the mobility retailer fit into the process? Quite simply, they can offer products that will reduce that risk to their client and whilst a client may not need the whole suite of products that are available initially, they may need to purchase additional dynamic products if or when their condition changes, and you can be there to support them with those changing needs. “Products such as the Domus 1, a bubble mattress, can offer a costeffective and simple pressure area care on a rise recliner, or a dynamic (air) cushion for a wheelchair, such as the Sedens 500. “If the client is susceptible to spending lengthy periods of time in bed then a pressure area care mattress can be offered, such as the Domus Auto, with a simple “no-fuss” automatic function offering enhanced pressure care. “These simple-to-use products can afford the client greater comfort and minimise the risk of developing a pressure ulcer instead, offering a more care-free and heathier life.

Where I see opportunity in dealers for pressure care is giving it the attention it needs by introducing a specialist or a champion who can assist in identifying the user’s needs as they won’t be buying a pressure cushion just for comfort. “It is far too easy for the customer to look at the price and just purchase a very basic foam cushion, or even our enemy, the ring cushion, as it makes the process very simple when it shouldn’t be. Somebody needing a pressure cushion could have a huge number of issues that need to be considered, not just if they have skin breakdown. “A simple matrix supported by a few key questions or even the use of an assessment tool could quite easily identify which cushion the user should be directed to, then of course their comfort is key as well as meeting their need. “I feel the customer would really appreciate that they have been in discussion with an expert amd it builds trust and confidence to use the retailer/supplier in future. “I am sure this is a process most dealers use anyway, and the information that Barend ter Haar has been sharing through THIIS on pressure cushions is extremely helpful for anybody in our industry to refer to, especially people who are required to be knowledgeable about a wide range of products.

LET’S GET IT CLEAR

Understanding standards Most of us will have come across the BSI KitemarkTM. The BSI Kitemark originated as the British Standards Mark in 1903 for use on tramway rails when standardisation reduced the number of rail sizes from 75 to five. Today the BSI Kitemark can be seen on hundreds of products from manhole covers to condoms, from security locks to fire extinguishers and riding helmets. Having a BSI Kitemark associated with a product or service confirms that it conforms to a particular standard: each BSI Kitemark scheme involves a determination of conformity to the relevant standard or specification of the product and an assessment of the management system operated by the supplier. This symbol is one that is trusted across the UK, and indeed across the world. So what are these standards that are being referred to? WHAT IS A STANDARD? A standard is a document containing practical information and best practice that has been brought

together by a group of experts, and then put out to broader scrutiny and acceptance before final publication (see below). A standard is often an agreed way of doing something, or providing a unified solution to a broad problem. As a result, standards share good ideas and solutions, technological know-how, and best management practices. They identify safety issues of products and services, and make products compatible so that they fit and work well with each other. An example of the latter are the HDMI or USB ports on your computer. WHO ISSUES THESE STANDARDS?

There is a generally accepted hierarchy of standards, starting with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) being adopted worldwide; the European Committee for Standardization (CEN)’s EN standards being adopted across We are ISO, the International Organization for Standardization

* August 2019

We all come across items in our daily lives that are regulated by standards, even if we do not know it. Meeting standards leads to increased safety, better compatibility between items, and better practice. In this article, we cover the hierarchy of standards across the world as they benefit us in the UK, and reflect on their importance with particular reference to medical devices, and ultimately the safety of our customers, clients, and patients.

Europe; and national standards being created and adopted by individual countries (e.g. BS standards in Britain, under the auspices of the BSI (British Standards Institute). Some international standards will have been adopted (and ‘harmonised’) across the EU, and also adopted in, say, the UK, and as a result will have the letters BS EN ISO in front of them. The added bit of fun is that at each level, the adopting body can add its own foreword to make minor alterations to the standard, for their local jurisdiction. WHO CREATES THE STANDARDS? Standards are prepared by Technical Committees (TCs – e.g. ISO TC173 Assistive Technology or CEN TC 293 Technical Aids for Disabled Persons). Each TC has its own field of operation (scope) within which a work programme of identified standards is developed and executed. TCs work on the basis of national participation by the ISO or CEN Members, where delegates represent their respective national points of view. This principle allows the TCs to take balanced decisions that reflect a wide consensus. A Subcommittee (SC) can be established within a TC, in the case of large programmes of work (e.g. ISO TC173 SC1 Wheelchairs). The real standards development is undertaken by Working Groups (WGs) (e.g. ISO TC 173 SC1 WG1 Wheelchair test methods or ISO TC173 WG11 Assistive products for tissue integrity) where experts, nominated and appointed by the ISO or CEN country members, but speaking in a personal capacity, come together and develop a draft that will become the future

standard. This reflects an embedded principle of ‘direct participation’ in the standardisation activities. The aim of the WGs is to have a balance across potential stakeholders, from commercial providers, public sector, etc, through to end-user. Individual countries opt to be participating members of any committee, or observers (where, in this case, they do not have a vote), or decide not to participate at all. Each country that participates tends to have its own national ‘mirror’ group, which feeds back each country’s comments and votes to the TCs and thereby the WGs. THE KINDS OF STANDARDS In addition to ‘normative’ (i.e. prescriptive) standards, some will be called Technical Reports (TR) or Technical Specifications (TS), and these are informative. A number of these informative standards become updated to become normative standards, as the material in them has been shown to stand the test of time. In the UK, BSI also produces Publicly Available Specifications (PAS), which, with time, can move onto being BS (British Standard) versions. Standards go through an iterative process on the road to final acceptance and publication. ISO tends to have more steps than CEN or BSI. The ISO steps are generally as follows, though often the Working Groups get permission to skip a step or two. The earliest stage is when a perceived need for a new standard, or revision of a standard, has been identified, and this goes out to international vote, at which stage it is called a NWIP (New Work Item Proposal). When approved by a minimum of five countries (who also have to put forward experts to work on the project), it becomes an AWI (Approved Work Item). The document itself it may start as a WD (Working Draft) or as a CD (Committee Draft), which is put out for international comments and vote. The Working Group then works through the comments, and if the feeling is that these have been addressed, the next stage is a DIS (Draft International Standard – the European equivalent is prEN) (or else

it goes back for another round of CD comments and voting). At the DIS stage any technical concerns should have been addressed, so when this draft goes out for voting, any comments coming back should really be editorial, unless some technical issues had been overlooked. If everyone agrees technically with the DIS, then it can be agreed to go straight to publication (with any editorial corrections addressed), or else it goes for one more round of voting as an FDIS (Final Draft International Standard – the European equivalent is FprEN), after which with majority approval The journey to a published standard

need to have strong justifications not to have used a recognised published standard. Where a product is sold in the EU or Northern Ireland, and there is a harmonised EN standard, then it the standard must be followed. Outside the regulatory framework above, as a prescriber you are following better practice for client safety and product assurance if you select an item that has been tested to, and passed, one or more of these recognised standards, than if the product is selected on, say, purely price grounds. The price may be slightly higher, but you will have the peace of mind that the manufacturer has picked up the costs of passing product tests, and thereby that your client is protected. While some

NWIP  AWI WD  CD  DIS (prEN)  FDIS (FprEN)  Publication it can be published. The drafts from DIS onwards can be referenced and worked with in the public domain. WHERE AND HOW DO STANDARDS AFFECT ME? Medical devices are placed on the market with specific clinically-related claims. The manufacturer has to justify these claims, and show that the product is safe and fit for purpose. Testing to, and passing, recognised standards is part of this process. If the manufacturer claims that their product is a medical device, they have to have it CE/UKCA marked in the EU and Great Britain. The placement of a CE or UKCA mark, and the MD symbol, on the product and its packaging indicate that the product has been assessed against these criteria, and registered in the relevant market places. Testing to ISO standards is voluntary, but if a manufacturer chooses to take another route, they

standards cover product testing, others provide guidance to best clinical practice, as well. Over and above the latter standards, there are also other sources of guidelines, such as the BHTA range of Get Wise leaflets1 and guidance publications, the Posture and Mobility Group’s Best Practice Guidelines, and RESNA’s position papers, all of which are free to download from these respective organisations. GET INVOLVED BSI, and the Working Groups, welcome all applications to become a standards maker: you only need to have relevant knowledge and experience, or to represent a relevant group of stakeholders such as BHTA. Please get in contact with BSI via standardsmakers@bsigroup.com 1. For example, the material in this article, and a bit more, can be found in Get Wise to Understanding Standards, accessible from www.bhta.com/get-wise/ where other Get Wise leaflets are also posted.

OPINION

Opinion: The importance of digital inclusion Digitisation in healthcare must be all encompassing to be truly successful, writes Graham Ewart I was really interested to read that the World Health Organisation released a policy brief last month aimed at combating age-related bias in health-related artificial intelligence tools. The need to ensure healthcare is all encompassing is a topic I’ve followed closely over the past five years, especially as technological innovations shape our sector, and of course, how Covid has changed our ways of working. One area I was particularly struck by during the pandemic was how quickly digital GP appointments became the norm, and the resulting difficulty with which some patients were able to access (or not access) these services - whether this was because they don’t have access to a smartphone, iPad or video call platform, or simply because they weren’t familiar with the process. For many, the feeling that the whole world is using technology you don’t understand can be a truly lonely experience. I feel a degree

of this when I see kids aged six and up coding websites or animating cartoons, so I can, in a very small way, imagine how worrying it is when your healthcare depends on technology. ACCESS FOR EVERYONE Many GPs introduced programmes, or websites to aid this dilemma, and for the very elderly, face-to-face or home visits were still accessible, but there have been clear learnings over the past 24 months that if we introduce digital technology in healthcare, we need everyone to be able to access it and although health tech is the future, we mustn’t forget those who need care now. Of course, there are benefits to digitalisation. A recent Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh webinar explained, for example, that virtual consulting has huge benefits for older patients, especially in remote rural areas, and for the environment, and a public engagement survey by Near Me in September 2021 found 76 per cent

Let the Powerpack do the pushing Incredibly easy to fit and simple to remove Designed and made in the UK Range of up to 10 miles

36 / www.thiis.co.uk

of respondents aged over 75 were supportive of video consulting. But digital inclusion doesn’t just mean overcoming issues surrounding age. Rather it means we need to ensure we are providing healthcare for all demographics as one. This could mean those living in areas with high levels of social deprivation (including migrant and homeless populations) who may not have the means to access smartphones, ipads, laptops, internet access or data, or patients who are vulnerable. For these groups, accessing the right tech and connectivity remains a pressing issue and one that the healthtech sector must overcome. According to the latest Office for

Graham Ewart is CEO of Direct Healthcare Group (DHG), a Caerphillybased developer and manufacturer of pressure care products. www.directhealth caregroup.com

National Statistics figures (2019), 10 per cent of the adult UK population were classed as ‘internet non-users’ and an estimated 10.7 million people had limited or zero basic digital skills. The causes of this are complex, although poverty is central. Digital technologies can bring huge efficiencies and improvement to healthcare and the idea of virtual health provision is exciting, but we can’t be short sighted to believe that everyone wants or can access the innovation being uncovered.

So while we must be careful not to assume everyone over a certain age, or below a certain wage level is dismissive of digital healthcare, we must be realistic that it is, for now, an add-on to be used alongside traditional face-to-face care, in order to ensure everyone has equal access to the care they deserve. TECHNOLOGIES FOR EVERYONE We also need to ensure that, as the WHO made reference to, technologies are designed with everyone in mind.

“[Digital healthcare] is, for now, an add-on to be used alongside traditional face-toface care, in order to ensure everyone has equal access to the care they deserve” There are multiple devices specifically aimed at seniors, but it’s still only a fraction of the tools aimed at young people, and in addition, the products designed can often be seen as insulting or patronising, where the tech companies often fall for prejudices about the people in those age groups. If we’re going to embrace tech in our sector, we need to bring all age groups into the R&D phase, rather than using outdated assumptions. As Dr. Bertalan Mesko, PhD, the Director of The Medical Futurist Institute, recently said, “what is certain is that over 60s are definitely on the market and technology companies are trying to reach them. To be able to find each other they must start speaking the same language.” There are many ‘what ifs’ in our sector, and Covid has shown us that not only can things change in an instant but that technologies can have huge benefits to the overall population, but we must remember that the ageing population is growing, and if we’re truly going to introduce a greater level of digitisation into healthcare, we need to bring everyone with us.

People with muscular dystrophy encounter problems with using powerchairs when their hands and fingers become cold and stiff. The mo-vis Hand Warmer blows warm air on the hands and keeps the fingers and area around the joystick warm. The adjustable warm air flow retains the finger flexibility and the capability to control the power chair. While it is a more common problem during winter, some people need the warm air of the Hand Warmer all-year-round to maintain control of the joystick. With a simple press on a button, warm air is blown onto the hands, and the user can continue to drive without problem. To maintain the warm air even longer around the hands and fingers, a perspex dome-shaped two-hands hood is available. mo-vis.com

ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

The power behind powerchair football Over recent years, Powerchair football has grown massively in popularity here in the UK. In 2019, there were 107 affiliated powerchair football teams in England with over 1000 players training on a weekly basis. Aside from the powerchair, one of the most vital pieces of equipment which every player uses is the

system with which they control the powerchair itself. Most players have muscle wasting conditions and often find that as their condition deteriorates, they struggle with the standard controls – especially when playing powerchair football. The Multi and Micro Joysticks from mo-vis are perfect as the resistance is so light even players with greatly reduced dexterity and strength in their hands can control their chair and fully take part in games. All mo-vis joysticks can be adapted to meet the needs of the individual and be fitted to almost all powerchair models. The joysticks can be connected directly to the powerchair’s electronics to enable the user to drive and control the functions. The Micro and Multi Joysticks are

very small proportional joysticks, designed for people with limited muscle strength and movement. Requiring only 8.5 and 50 gr of force to move, they can be controlled by finger, chin and – in the case of the Micro Joystick – even the tongue or lip. Both models are highly recommended for people with muscle wasting or neuromuscular conditions such as SMA and Muscular Dystrophy. For more information on the full range of joystick controls available from mo-vis, email: contact@mo-vis.com, call +32 9 335 28 60 or visit www.mo-vis.com

Precision Rehab – putting the client first Precision Rehab is headed up by Founder Matthew James and his wife Emma. With over three decades of experience in the assessment, sales and servicing of specialist bespoke powerchairs, the Precision Rehab team works closely with the client, their occupational therapist and anyone else involved in their day to day care from assessment to delivery. Some clients require a specialist seating system and Precision Rehab can achieve this through its relationships with many of the UK’s leading seating manufacturers. This combined experience and network of contacts ensures that every client

receives the powerchair and seating system which meets their specific requirements. Alternatively, should a client require their existing moulded seating, this can be incorporated onto their chair using custom interfacing. “I believe the chair should fit the person as opposed to the person fitting the chair,” comments Founder Matthew James. Personalising a chair does not stop at the seating system. From mounting communication systems and bespoke controls which can include chin and head systems there is a wide choice of adaptions and paint finishes available. Matthew adds: “At Precision Rehab

we only use trusted manufacturers and suppliers to ensure we can provide our clients with high quality reliable products. “In addition to being the official supplier of the eight-model Paravan range of powerchairs for the UK and Ireland, we also work with several other leading powerchair brands including Dietz, NHD, Trackmaster and Eurovema.” To discuss the full range of powerchairs or book an assessment call 01256 300111, email: info@precisionrehab.co.uk or visit www.precisionrehab.co.uk

Sango Advanced by Dietz Mobility UK The Sango Advanced offers great traction and comfort for outdoor use with a compact chassis size for tighter manoeuvres when being used in indoors. A rubber suspension system offers an almost silent drive and a high level of comfort by absorbing vibrations from general surfaces as well as larger bumps from rougher outdoor obstacles. An additional pivot point also offers extra stability on cambers and when cornering. Available in either mid-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive or frontwheel-drive, features include four-pole high torque motors, 4, 6 and 8mph speeds and 60, 78 and 100Ah battery options. Featuring a low seat height starting from 38cm, its modular seating means that it is easy to interface third-party solutions, with customised and bespoke items able to be built onto this chair. dietz-mobility.co.uk

Multi Switch by mo-vis Controlling multiple switches can be very challenging for people with reduced hand strength and dexterity. To control all functionalities of the powerchair and have access to simple controls, communication aids or other devices, multiple switches are needed. The Multi Switch can control up to four outputs with just one input. This input can be any mechanical switch or a mo-vis proximity sensor. In case of the latter, no force is required to control all the different outputs. For example, with just one switch, the person can switch the power chair on/off, control the mode button of the chair, access the Hand Warmer functions and control their smartphone with the scanning software. mo-vis.com

Attendant Control Kit by Proactive Mobility The Attendant Control Kit allows a FreedomChair to be steered by a carer/attendant walking behind the chair. The thumbstick provides steering in all directions and the kit includes a pair of height-adjustable rear-facing handles for stable control. This kit helps to lengthen the usable life of a FreedomChair should the user become less able to control the chair from the main front joystick. Easy to fit, the kit simply plugs into the charging port of the front joystick. Turning on the rear-mounted thumbstick gives control to the carer/attendant, who can also set a comfortable walking speed using the thumbstick’s power button. e-goes.co.uk
