On course for success
East Anglian DriveAbility hosted the latest successful Powered Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter training course for retailers…
East Anglian DriveAbility, the accredited Driving Mobility centre in Thetford, recently delivered the latest Powered Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter (PWMS) Retailer Training course.
Supported by the Department for Transport in England, Driving Mobility provides this free customer assessment and safety training courses for mobility scooter retailers. The scheme aims to improve road safety for all – through a process that ensures people looking to purchase or hire mobility vehicles are given comprehensive advice on the right product for their individual needs along with safe driving guidance.
PWMS Educators, Karen and Dawn, ran the engaging and insightful course which was attended by a healthy number of local retailers.
QUALITY TRAINING
The free training consists of online modules and a practical session at one of the designated Driving Mobility centres across the UK.
There are two modules which can be accessed via the online training platform Moodle. These two online modules can be undertaken at work, or from home, whichever is preferred. Following the successful completion of these online modules, participants are then invited to attend their nearest Driving Mobility centre for half a day. Attendees undertake desk-based sessions and hands-on product training

which aim to promote customer assessment good practice.
Retailers and hirers who complete the course receive a qualification certificate and an eye-catching window sticker. These provide a clear indication that the business has completed training that is officially accredited by Driving Mobility and the Department for Transport. Customers are then given confidence they are purchasing mobility scooters or powerchairs from a reputable retailer who has received clinically-led training for better assessment of their needs.
ABOUT DRIVING MOBILITY
Driving Mobility is a registered charity which accredits a network of over 16 ‘fitness to drive’ and mobility equipment assessment centres across the UK. Many with outreach facilities, these centres include independent charities and NHS departments which provide clinical guidance, advice and training so disabled and elderly people can gain or retain independence.
With the use of powered mobility equipment increasing in the UK, Driving Mobility ensures products are matched more effectively with customer needs. With this first ever Department for Transport-supported training programme led by clinicians from Driving Mobility, retailers can combine new skills with their own product expertise, a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair that is well-suited to their needs.
WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP
Through the training scheme, retailers and Driving Mobility centres are working closer together and building stronger relationships. This means when retailers have clients who would benefit from a more in-depth clinical assessment, they can be referred to a Driving Mobility Centre and then returned to the retailer to purchase the best suited equipment.
Hosted by Driving Mobility, the scheme was launched in the summer of 2023 at a House of Lords reception. The reception was attended by leading representatives within the mobility equipment retail sector, assessment centre managers, representatives from ShopMobility UK and figures in the public eye, including Baroness Tanni Grey-Thomson; Margot Shatz, Department for Transport; and Raymond Hodgkinson MBE.
Since the launch there have been several well-attended training events held at Driving Mobility centres around the country.
Attendees at the PWMS retailer training course in Thetford qualified with a certificate (pictured above right) at East Anglian DriveAbility.

This includes 3kg for the motor and a 1.4kg lithium-ion battery, which can be disconnected and transported separately (the intuitive, easy to grip two-peg design allows easy mounting without using any tools). Karen Sheppard Managing Director of People First Mobility peoplefirstmobility.com
Harley Back Support from Able2
“One of our favourite mobility accessories is the Harley Back Support cushion which has been specifically designed to be used either in a wheelchair or on a standard chair.
“It is popular with our customers due to the level of support it provides, making it ideal for those who struggle with their seated balance or back pain.
“Available in two models, one is the standard version which is ergonomically moulded from cold cast
Sensaflex Cushion Range from Alerta
“We have sold many cushions over the 18 years we have been in business but the range we are currently selling are the Sensaflex range from Alerta.
“The Sensaflex cushions provide effective comfort, care and pressure redistribution for users in hospital, nursing and care home environments.
“They have different pressure care levels ranging from medium to very high risk. The Sensaflex 200 is a medium-risk cushion whilst the Sensaflex 300 is a very high-risk cushion. They all take a user weight
of 150kg. All cushions come with a multi-stretch and vapour permeable PU cover, which are all water resistant and machine washable.
“Alerta also offer a Mobile Cushion System, which is a battery-powered alternating pressure relieving cushion which is effective for prevention and treatment for users up to high risk of developing pressure ulcers. This system takes up to 130kg in user weight.
“We have sold many of these cushions due to their quality and reasonable price point. Many of
polyurethane foam.
The other is the designer model which is moulded from visco elastic memory foam and provides a slightly softer back support with more give.
“The Harley Back Support cushion has been designed with shaped sides to ensure a gentle lateral support.
"It comes with a fixing strap to keep the back support cushion in place and offers an ideal solution for those who need to stay seated for long periods of time. “

our customers who buy a manual wheelchair from us tend to buy one of the Sensaflex cushions to use with the chair.”

Laura Hays Director of Thistle

Splash Range from Able2
“Here at TPG we have a great range of mobility devices as standard from various manufacturers, but as a general rule clients will often want to add accessories and attachments to their purchase to personalise it for themselves.
“It is often that these accessories can improve the overall sales price significantly and should never be overlooked in these difficult trading times as an important way to improve the margin.
“One of our most popular lines is a high visibility storage bag that goes over the backrest of the scooter or wheelchair. It provides very useful storage for wet weather gear, shopping, walking sticks or refreshments.
“It has the added advantage that it increases the visibility of the user, which in turn makes it safer for them to travel in high traffic areas.
“The nice thing for the retailer is that it also carries the logo and telephone

number of the retailer, advertising to all that see it.
"Our choice is the Splash Range of bags from Able2. They come in a few variants to suit either wheelchairs or scooters and even options for carrying crutches. The embroidery is of great quality and delivery is always in a timely fashion.”

Meeting customers’ needs
Mendip Mobility is looking forward to welcoming new customers into its new showroom in Bridgwater, Somerset…
Mendip Mobility opened its fourth mobility showroom in Bridgwater, Somerset earlier this year. The family-run business has been operating in the southwest of England since 2007 and also has retail outlets in Street, Trowbridge and Yeovil.
Stocking mobility scooters, powerchairs, adjustable beds, rise & recliners, wheelchairs and more, Mendip Mobility stocks brands such as Able2, Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare, Motion Healthcare, Pride Mobility, Dash Rehab, CosiChair and Electric Mobility with its team priding themselves on
their product knowledge and customer commitment.
Helen Allcock, Store Manager at Mendip Mobility in Bridgwater, explains that the customer has always been at the very heart of Mendip Mobility’s service.
“We want to provide a valuable service to people in the community,” says Helen. “Disabilities can affect anyone at any stage of their lives and they can have a huge impact on the people around us and this was something close to the heart of the family when the business was established.
“We have a commitment to putting customers first, helping to ease their daily challenges and pride ourselves on our approachable nature and industry knowledge.”
“We want to provide a valuable service to people in the community”
Customers Mr and Mrs Hill join Helen Allcock and Jason Delange at the opening of the new showroom

“The large open interior allows the products to be really visible to the customer”
Apart from Helen, other key people at Mendip Mobility include Jason Delange, who is the general manager of the showrooms at Bridgwater, Yeovil and Trowbridge.
Says Helen: “At the moment we just have two staff members at Bridgwater but we will be expanding soon.
“All our staff across the stores have their specialities which offers an extensive knowledge base to our customers.”
Mendip Mobility also has a technical team based at its Street branch which covers the local area for any technical issues that may arise.
NEW SHOWROOM
The Bridgwater showroom is located directly off Junction 23 of the M5. Bridgwater itself has a rich industrial history, and the showroom sits within a large unit at the industrial end of the
town. There is plenty of free allocated parking and the location is easily accessible from town.
The site works really well, Helen says: “Having such a large open interior allows the products to be really visible to the customer. There’s an indoor area to test products on colder days but plenty of outdoor space too.”
Finding a site suitable for their needs had been challenging initially, Helen explains. As with any location there are pros and cons but there were a few key factors on the checklist that they were lucky enough to encompass within the unit in Bridgwater.
“Space and parking were two big considerations and we have an abundance of both here,” adds Helen. “We wanted to be accessible. Bridgwater is a very busy place, and we have lots of passing traffic, but we’re also a stone’s throw from the main stores like Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer.”
This was a huge space to prepare for the opening, she says. “There were many challenges getting it up and
running. Just getting the keys took longer than expected but with an active deadline to work to we managed to pull together and get everything set up and looking great for opening!”
The store's large open space enables Mendip Mobility to stock a wide variety of products from different manufacturers. “We particularly love that there’s a good sized indoor area to test drive and lots of product visibility so customers can peruse. We wanted to keep the feel of the open nature of the space by not overcrowding.”
Helen explains that opening the store in Bridgwater has opened them up to a younger demographic than some of their other stores and the Motability Scheme is already proving to be very popular. She adds: "Many older customers visit the store as well and there’s a real variety of product interest.”
Word of mouth has been the best source of footfall, with many people locally recognising the Mendip Mobility brand as it has been in the vicinity and fostering good relationships
The showroom offers plenty of space for customers to sample the products

with customers for 18 years. Local advertising and leaflet drops all helped to promote the new store, with some customers finding out about the store through online search engines such as Google.
INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS
Staff at Mendip Mobility all have different skill sets and specialise in different product areas. Jason, the general manager, has a special interest in powerchairs and wheelchairs, while Helen particularly enjoys working with rise & recliners and beds.
Pavement scooters, such as Motion Healthcare’s Airscape mobility scooter, and lightweight powerchairs are proving to be particularly popular at the moment with many customers looking forward to getting out and about in the summer months.
Helen says: “The local area has a wide variety of product users because of its location. The roads carry lots of heavy lorries and so some users want a robust product but want to avoid road use due to the traffic, so pavement scooters have been a great solution to this.”
Mendip Mobility, she says, has seen an increase in the sale of lightweight folding powerchairs at the showroom. “With these more readily available they make accessing the local area easier
for people with mobility issues but are lightweight and small enough to pop in the boot of a car without any hassle.
“We’re not far from some wonderful countryside and the seaside so our products definitely have to be capable of coping with all kinds of situations.”
Pride Mobility’s Outback powerchair, which has is designed to handle rugged terrain, is one of the newer products to be stocked in the showroom and looks set to appeal to customers seeking to experience the freedom of the great outdoors.
Helen says that Mendip Mobility has a good relationship with its suppliers and likes to work closely with them. “We aim to maintain a responsive service to customers supported by our positive supplier relationships. We’re always interested in new products, especially those that bring something different to the table.
“Our commitment to customer service also means we need to rely upon our brands to be supportive when issues arise and we’re lucky to work with some great industry leaders.”
COMMUNITY LINKS
This year Mendip Mobility is focused on reaching out to the local community and fostering links, says Helen. “Our ethos is integral to our service and it’s important our customers know what
type of business we are. The business has already started to pick up pace as the sun has started to shine so we’re looking forward to a busy summer and hopefully some product expansion.”
The firm’s e-commerce site allows customers to see the range of products the store has available before popping into store, comments Helen. “Our website has been a valuable point of reference for many customers though nothing beats popping into store and being able to test out a product and speak to our staff in person!”
Helen continues: “E-commerce is important, especially when customers know what they are purchasing. It also provides an opportunity for them to research what they want and is often a first point of reference for many people, particularly younger product users.”
As for the future, Mendip Mobility just wants to get the word out that it is here and let people know what kind of company it is.
“The business has already started to pick up pace as the sun has started to shine”

The showroom stocks a selection of rise & recliners and beds
Lithium LiFePo4 Batteries

More Power. Longer Life. Faster Charge.
Strident Lithium batteries offer increased cycle and design life together with faster charge acceptance over standard lead acid batteries, helping to minimise replacement cost and reduce cost of ownership.

> Faster charging
> Greater depth of discharge - so you can discharge almost the entire battery without damaging the battery
> Light weight
> Longer lifespan - over 10x the cycle life of AGM/GEL technology
> Cost - although a higher upfront cost, long-term, Lithium batteries can be cheaper due to longer lifespan
Battery Accessories

> On some scooter models, the frequency of current from the lithium battery can interfere with the accuracy of the battery state of charge indicator, please ensure you check all functionality thoroughly before running on lithium technology. Your questions answered... CHHP24-1.5CAR(LI) In-Car Lithium Battery Charger BCT01 Tests lithium batteries (12v only)
So, can AGM/GEL Batteries be swapped out with a like-for-like Lithium Battery?
> Yes, often Lithium can be a good alternative, and can directly replace AGM/GEL Batteries!
Some considerations to bear in mind would be:
> Lithium batteries need a lithium-specific charger.
> Ensure you swap with the same voltage, Ah and battery dimensions as the original battery.
> Check the mobility scooter is suited to lithium battery use as they are lighter in weight and this can, on rare occasions, interfere with weight distribution.

“We love helping our customers and are looking to expand our team accordingly so we can hopefully open for longer hours.”
Helen admits that there are challenges within the market with a wide range of products more readily available online and acknowledges that price is a particular consideration for a lot of people when purchasing.
“It’s important we stock a range of cost effective products that serve those people with limited budgets.
“On a more practical level we believe there’s a wider variety of product users with different requirements and ages and so the challenge of the sector will be making products flexible enough to cater for that range of need. New

innovations are needed constantly.”
At present Mendip Mobility has four stores and staff have plenty to manage but Helen says that it is always looking for innovative products to improve and
extend its range. “We want to be able to meet customers needs and provide the best quality products we can.”

“I joined Care & Independence in February 2018 as Finance Director, becoming Managing Director six months later. It soon became apparent to me that the DNA of the business lay in our expertise to solve complex problems, with an outstanding assessment service offered to support that.
“With areas of the business struggling to deliver required

performances, we embarked on a restructuring programme across 2019 and 2020, focusing only on what we were good at. The result of which is the company we know today. We emerged from the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic in a strong position and have subsequently enjoyed years of growth and investment in sales and marketing.
“The success of any organisation is down to the people it employs. During my time at Care & Independence I have been fortunate to recruit and develop an excellent management team, who alongside the existing highly experienced staff have established an outstanding brand and medical device company.”
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN MOST PROUD OF DURING YOUR TIME AT CARE & INDEPENDENCE?
“Our company ethos of ‘improving lives’ is something that our staff have taken to heart. Every day I have been proud of the amazing effort and dedication that the entire team give across the business irrespective of their role – it is truly humbling; the fact that last year we improved the lives of over 170,000 individuals is testament to that.
“I’m also incredibly proud of winning the BHTA Manufacturer of the Year 2024. To have such a prestigious industry award was not only a great achievement in itself, but gave everyone at Care & Independence much deserved recognition for their collective contribution in our success.”
WHAT HAVE BEEN THE STANDOUT PROJECTS FOR YOU?
“In the past few years Care & Independence has brought a number of new products to market, all of which have driven innovation in patient handling and improved lives. Probably most notable is our patented Glove Diamond Deluxe family of slings which addresses concerns around pressure issues to coccyx and legs during lifting, representing the pinnacle of sling innovation.
“Equally, the Glove Convenience Max which was shortlisted for BHTA Product of the Year 2024 with its highly supportive design features, allows more users to use an access style sling. Additionally, with the launch of our Comfort Value range back in 2019, we
have been able to supply top quality and high-performing sling and bathing products to the multi-equipment sector at budget-friendly pricing, which has greatly benefitted the community sector.”
HOW DO YOU THINK CARE & INDEPENDENCE HAS EVOLVED DURING YOUR TIME WORKING THERE?
“The company I leave behind is very different to the one I joined six years ago. Then it was a newly formed consolidation of four independent businesses that on reflection was not best playing to our strengths. We subsequently took the decision to strip back to focus on slings and bathing where our expertise firmly lay, which has paid dividends.
“Today Care & Independence has a strong identity with clear commitments and goals – two of which being to achieve net zero emissions by 2035, ahead of the NHS England & Wales target, and to improve the lives of one million people per year by 2031. In the past six years, we have experienced exponential growth across all areas and the business has never been in stronger position than now.
"As my time with Care & Independence comes to a close, I feel incredibly positive about the company’s next chapter and am confident it
will continue to go from strength to strength – it is in more than capable hands with GBUK Group.”
WHAT IS THE BESTSELLING HERO PRODUCT AT CARE & INDEPENDENCE?
“The Glove Airflow in-chair sling has been consistently in demand for many years and is without doubt considered a staple product by sling prescribers.
“The Glove Tux, which we first brought to market nearly 20 years ago, has also proven time and time again to be a popular sling choice, only becoming eclipsed since we launched the Glove Diamond variants. Furthermore, as we design and manufacture our own products, our ‘Specials’ service of modified solutions too is a constant necessity in supporting the needs of our customers.”
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED IN THE UK?
“Primarily we sell direct to sling prescribers (occupational therapists and clinicians etc), with the occasional direct sale to end users too. We have also been highly successful across the country in getting equipment onto framework, working with multivendor providers such as community equipment stores and care homes."

The Comfort Value range was launched in 2019

WHAT KINDS OF CHALLENGES HAS CARE & INDEPENDENCE HAD TO MANAGE IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS?
“As for everyone, the Covid-19 pandemic was a difficult time to navigate and required considered business decisions to ensure business security and resilience. As a UK manufacturer we were less affected by global shipping crises but the resulting cost of raw materials and impact to the general cost of living is something we have had to be mindful of.
“To help combat these challenges, we adapted a number of manufacturing processes and reviewed overheads keeping costs to a minimum, the benefits of which we’ve been able to pass onto our customer base.”

conversations with a number of loan stores to this end and are highly optimistic that further demand will follow elsewhere.”
HOW HAS CARE & INDEPENDENCE CHANGED SINCE ITS ACQUISITION BY GBUK GROUP LAST YEAR IN TERMS OF PRODUCTS AND PRACTICES?
“Our principal product portfolio remains unaffected but from an operational perspective, we are benefitting from shared resources and additional support in terms of personnel, expertise, and system administrations amongst other things.”
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT SOME OF OF THE NEWEST PRODUCT LAUNCHES TO COME FROM CARE & INDEPENDENCE AND DESCRIBE WHAT LED TO THEIR DEVELOPMENT?
“As Care & Independence now forms part of GBUK’s Patient Handling Division alongside GBUK Banana, we are in a position to directly offer our community-based customers a number of GBUK Banana products such as slidesheets and transfer boards.
“This co-op has allowed us to further enhance our product portfolio with established high-quality products to benefit those in the community sector. We have already had progressive
WHAT IS CARE & INDEPENDENCE FOCUSING ON AT THE MOMENT?
“First and foremost, we remain dedicated to improving lives of those less able and their carers.
“We are very much continuing to support healthcare professionals in the field by providing free joint assessments and training to promote best practice. We continue to exemplify our core values of being humbly confident, caring and friendly, going the extra mile and having a growth mindset, all whilst working for the greater good.
"We will continue to invest in product development and in our people, and build upon the brand legacy of the past 25 years as a company that is respected, trusted, and seen as a leader in the patient handling field.”
WHAT PRODUCTS IS CARE
& INDEPENDENCE WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
“As part of the GBUK Group we remain committed as ever in continuing to invest in the development of products that will help improve lives. We
closely monitor the issues facing our community from both a carer and user perspective, taking this as our lead to develop products that address these real-world issues.
“There are a number of worthy projects being considered at present. As we move through the due diligence research stages, we will establish priorities and realistic timeframes to bring these to market in due course.”
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MAIN ISSUES AFFECTING THE MOVING AND HANDLING SECTOR?
“It’s impossible to discuss the challenges facing the moving and handling sector without acknowledging the significant financial pressures on the wider healthcare industry. Ever-tightening budgets are putting immense strain on local authorities, hospitals, and care homes as they struggle to support an aging population, compounded by the growing obesity crisis.
“There is increasing pressure to transition individuals from statemanaged care facilities back into home care settings, yet the shortage of trained care staff makes this transition incredibly difficult. Those who are available are already stretched to their limits with overwhelming caseloads. The situation is unsustainable, and without bold, decisive action from the

government and key stakeholders, the risk of collapse looms large.
“As manufacturers and service providers, we are acutely aware of these challenges. We remain committed to supporting the sector by keeping costs manageable, offering practical solutions, and working towards more sustainable, long-term strategies.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR CARE & INDEPENDENCE OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?
“Care & Independence is joining forces with GBUK Banana to form a Patient Handling Division. Having a consolidated approach to both acute and community sectors will greatly benefit both sides.
“As a division, we will be better placed to offer holistic solutions to see individuals through from institutional stays through discharge to homebased care with a far more seamless transition that is often experienced by many now. We are very excited by the potential this partnership will be
able to deliver both to patients and the authorities managing their care.”
AND HOW ABOUT YOU? WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
“The plan had always been to take an early semi-retirement, so personally I plan to spend more time with the family and in enjoying a more relaxed pace of life for a while. In April I become a grandad for the first time and have a daughter’s wedding to look forward to in August, so there is plenty to keep me occupied in 2025.
“However, in my role as a BHTA board member, I will be continuing to advocate improvements for healthcare and in lobbying government bodies for support to the industry at large.”

Back to the future
It is more important than ever for business owners to keep up with the latest technology, as Mike Glynn explains…
Imagine waking up in the 1800s –there was no electricity, internet, or smartphones – just steam engines and horse-drawn carriages. Fastforward to today, and we have AI doing our work, drones delivering packages, and businesses running entirely in the cloud.
The trading of goods or services for money has remained the same, but the tools we use to execute this activity have changed immensely.
When you look at day-to-day life today compared with 25, 50 or even 100 years ago, technology is the catalyst for change in our lives. In a nutshell, what’s been achieved in the last 50 years is vast compared to the previous 500 years in terms of advancement.
EVOLVING TECHNOLOGY
Technology has flipped the world upside down, especially in the business world. The last 25 years have seen
changes at warp speed, forcing businesses to sink or swim.
First, it was fire, then came electrical power. Can you imagine running a business without electricity? Exactly. Factories could work at night, offices had lights, and communication was boosted significantly – productivity shot through the roof.
Who would have thought that when television first appeared in 1926, you would have a television in the palm of your hand today? Today, you can watch videos, television, YouTube or any other streaming service 24/7, and there is no test card or national anthem at midnight.
Strangely enough, when it first started to be used, television was where household global brands advertised; now, you can advertise regionally to a smaller targeted audience.
Remember when we first had internet at home on dial-up? You could
use the computer or the phone, but you could never use both together, as they shared the same line. Back then, we thought it was groundbreaking. Can you imagine that arrangement today?
Now, 5G and fibre connect us at lightning speeds on several devices simultaneously.
STAYING CONNECTED
Today, we like to be connected; it’s as essential as food and drink for many. But how many of you connect with your customers regularly? Remember, it’s our job to remind customers of the good things we do! The internet has reshaped business more than anything else. It has erased borders, opened digital storefronts, and made competition fiercer than ever. If you’re not online, are you even in business?
Handwritten letters became a thing of the past when email arrived. It was more likely that you knew the person

Why businesses can’t afford to fall behind
Now, let’s get real. The last 25 years have been a technological whirlwind, and the pace isn’t slowing. If a business fails to adapt, here’s what happens:
Competitors leave you in the dust: If they’re online and using AI while you’re still relying on paper records, guess who wins?
Inefficiency drags you down: Manual processes waste time and money. Automation isn’t a luxury—it’s survival.
Customers move on: Modern consumers expect seamless digital experiences. They’ll find someone who does if you don’t meet them where they are.
Opportunities slip away:
Companies that embrace tech gain access to new revenue streams, markets, and customers. Those that resist? Not so much.
Financial strain increases:
Outdated models don’t compete in today’s world. Slow adopters often see profits shrink and doors close.
sending the letter then as opposed to the hundreds of emails that you receive today from, in many cases, anonymous persons.
Today, you will likely communicate with friends and family via video chat, phone, social media, or email.
When you compare how we communicate today to a hundred years ago, the difference is speed, clarity, and accessibility. You no longer have to queue up for the public phone on the corner with a handful of 10p and 2p pieces. The days of waiting for your neighbour to get off the phone because you had a party line are long gone.
The mobile phone started the size of a small briefcase and is now no longer just a phone. They evolved into sleek

smartphones, untethering businesses from desks and revolutionising customer interactions.
E-commerce came after computers and smartphones. Online shopping has changed everything. Businesses could now sell 24/7, reaching customers worldwide without opening a physical store.
Pioneered by Amazon, Ebay, and Shopify, the online virtual shop offers gamified shopping with easy access and frictionless returns. People are buying and returning more online than ever before.
EMBRACING SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media isn’t new, but how it is used in business has changed, and companies can now engage directly with customers. Marketing became more personal, feedback was instant, and brands had to stay authentic. Businesses that use social successfully will see more visitor engagement and better-qualified prospects. Customers will check you out online before raising their hands or asking in their social group, where your reviews and advocates play a significant role.
Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn – from tracking website visits to predicting customer preferences, businesses can now make more intelligent decisions with data-driven insights.
Imagine holding meetings in a virtual office or selling products in a digital store. The metaverse is set to transform how businesses interact with customers and employees.
This is all very interesting, but what’s it to do with running a mobility business? You may be quite happy with how things are at the moment. But if
you don’t embrace some of the new technology available now in one, two or even five years from now, you will be left behind. Some of you will be saying, “That’s alright. I don’t need to worry about that. I won’t be here.” If that’s you, then you’re the person who needs to grab this with both hands.
If you don’t implement it now, then leave it. Your exit value for the business will be hugely diminished.
But don’t panic. Next time, I will share some quick ways to implement processes and systems and add massive value without impacting the day-to-day running of things.
ADAPT OR BE LEFT BEHIND
The lesson here? Technology isn’t an option—it’s the foundation of modern business. Every major innovation has reshaped the business world, from steam engines to AI. The question is: Are you riding the wave of change or getting swept under?
Embrace technology, stay curious, and evolve. Because in today’s fastpaced world, standing still is the fastest way to disappear.

Flammability risks of mattresses
Flammability testing of mattresses tends to be based on furnishings flammability testing, but are these fit for purpose for medical devices, with their varying designs and structures?
Where issued on a bed for the prevention or alleviation of skin pressure injuries, the mattresses provided will be medical devices as specified by their manufacturer. For the protection of the patient and carers, the risk of harm from ignition of the materials used should be minimised, but not at the cost of increased risk of tissue damage. But how much of the risk comes from the medical device, and how much from human behaviour and other external factors?
This topic was highlighted in a recent Society of Tissue Viability webinar1 which concentrated on the challenges presented by ‘air powered’ mattresses where if punctured by an ignition source, the air pumps increase the airflow, thereby ‘fanning’ the flames. Dr Jeannie Donnelly (Lead Nurse – Tissue Viability, BHSCT (Belfast Health & Social Care Trust)) presented a case study which highlighted all the risks to and from a specific individual, who was a smoker. She emphasises the needs to:
• Recognise human factors which
Rollbuddy
must be considered prior to providing a powered mattress to people who smoke.
• Discuss potential intervention strategies and their effectiveness in minimising the risks associated with accidental dwelling fires.
• Examine the role of individuals, and agencies, that are in contact with people at risk and how they can be employed to reduce the risk from fire.
Peter Cassidy, Station Commander with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, describes the Safer Together project they have carried out with BHSCT to try to reduce the risks from fire for the Trust’s patients. Part of this was to produce an e-learning package2 , of value to anyone who may be in contact with a ‘vulnerable’ patient. This includes a Risk Awareness Form listing Red Flag Indicators to be brought into the total risk assessment process, as well as other useful items such as posters. (The project has just won the Regional Social Care Award 2025!).
• Stylish, modern indoor rollator
• Wooden non-slip, removable tray
• Available in black, silver and copper

Elements of human behaviour in the 32 fatalities recorded between 2020 and 2022 were highlighted by Peter:
• 94% were people over the age of 50
• 44% were triggered by smoking
• 53% of the individuals were known to the services
• 30% were discovered by carers

PROCUREMENT
In prescribing a suitable pressure care product, where does one start? From a procurement perspective, what should be specified within the description of the relevant flammability criteria for selection of a pressure care device? The answer is that there’s no simple answer, and it all falls back on the assessment of ‘risk’. Even that is not straightforward since often we have a range of external (that are external to the device being specified, such as the behavioural aspects outlined above) ‘environmental’ inputs, each at a point somewhere along a risk scale. It is the summation of the external risks relating to fire that will guide to the degree that the pressure care device needs to manage the fire risk. The end result inevitably will be some kind of compromise.
For this article, we concentrate on pressure care devices which are offered as ‘medical devices’ since these are specifically excluded from UK fire regulations, whereas domestic beds, mattresses, and cushions fall under furnishings fire regulations.
ENVIRONMENTAL INPUTS
The following is a list of some of the inputs needing to be considered for the risk assessment. This list of inputs covers the ‘environmental’ risks to a patient. Once these have been assessed, then the properties of the pressure care device itself will come into play.
• Use environment
The scale of risk from fire will vary, depending on where the patient is situated. This will be along the scale of increasing risk from hospital to residential home to domestic home to ‘institutions’ (e.g. prisons).

In the US, this is managed by requirements that institutional, i.e. non-domestic, settings have sprinkler systems to manage any fire, rather than relying on the pressure care device to control the fire risk. (Note that in England new-build residential homes must now have sprinkler systems installed.)

• User – mobility
In the case of fire, how easily can the individual get away from the conflagration? If the user has impaired mobility, then the flame retardancy of the pressure care device becomes more important.
• User – behaviour
There are environments where the degree of risk from the patients’ behaviours, be it from smoking,
mental stability, cognitive ability, disruptive arson, or other, need to be taken into consideration.
• User – extraneous risks Is the patient on oxygen and therefore potentially offering up a greater risk if a small fire were to start? Is the patient being treated with emollients3 – these are usually made up in volatile flammable solvents, and can be on the patient’s skin, on their clothing, and/or on their bedding. Emollients have been shown to be a much higher contributor to patient burn injuries than previously thought. How flammable are their clothing or their bed coverings in their own rights? Are alcohol wipes being used (there’s many a tale of

cautery devices setting light to drapes in operating theatres!)?
• User – pressure care device application
There will be less fire risk around a small device such as a wheelchair cushion than a full-size mattress, for example. When selecting a cushion for a wheelchair the risk from fire has been shown statistically to be very low, in part because the occupant’s body covers most of the pressure care product, whereas the potential risk of skin damage is higher, because of the higher forces and lengths of time involved.
PRODUCT ELEMENTS
As the environmental risk score increases, then the prescriber needs to compromise increasingly between the risks to the patient from the environmental factors versus the risk of the ‘fire-proof’ materials to their skin health. If the combination of all the environmental risks is low, or manageable, then full attention can be turned to the patient’s risks of tissue injury, and how to prevent it.
• User – medical
The leading question here is which is the greater risk to the patient: serious health impairment from tissue injury or from fire.
• Ignition resistance vs retardancy
Around the world, most of the flammability standards have had as a minimum a lighted cigarette test and a flame test. In the UK we have also had Crib tests where increasing amounts of heat have been applied to the device: a Crib 5 test is a heat source designed to burn for 5 minutes, and a Crib 7 test for 7 minutes, for example. Two aspects are of relevance from the testing: how easily will the device catch light, and if, once alight, how quickly will it selfextinguish.
• Fire retardants
Various fire retarding additives have been banned around the world arising from concerns about their biocompatibility when
coming into contact with naked skin. For cover materials that are washed or cleaned down, do the retardants get washed away or deactivated – so should the device be tested as new or after a number of wash cycles? Fire retardants in foam decrease their useful life, but may be needed for the foam to pass flammability tests.
• Materials – should the cover on its own and the inner material on its own be tested individually and/ or as a composite?
• Materials – even if the material passes the flammability selfextinguishing testing what is the risk of hydrocyanides and other gases given off while the product was combusting?
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
While furniture flammability tests are the current basis for testing medical support surfaces in many parts of the world, these tests will be heavily weighted around furnishings being made with polyurethane foam fillings, and the fire source coming from above.
current can be turned up to give the equivalent heat output of a flame or a Crib test. Meanwhile the furnishing cigarette, flame, and Crib tests will continue to be called up, until an alternative is agreed upon.
Finally: Returning to the case study referred to at the start of this article, where the patient presents a high risk from his smoking habits, I would avoid prescribing an air-powered pressure care mattress, since there’s still a good range of alternative pressure care devices suitable for patients at high risk of tissue injury – if we compare the prescription of air-powered devices in the UK with the rest of the world, dare I ask if they are over-prescribed?

The international wheelchair cushions standard working group came to the conclusion that a cigarette type of test would be appropriate around all the external and medical risks. They found that there was no such thing as a standard cigarette, however, so they came up with a surrogate cigarette in the form of a NiCr coil through which a suitable current is passed, and this has been accepted around the world including by the FDA: The standard is ISO 16840-10 plus Amd14. This test method is suitable to be used equally with foam filled, gel filled, air filed, or air-powered products. It also addresses testing all surfaces (top, side, or bottom) that might be at risk.
This is being investigated by the international mattress standards working group and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission as being appropriate for mattresses. The coil
