Dick Stack, then 18, founded DICK'S Sporting Goods in 1948 while working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. Dick, a fisherman, was approached by the store owner to create a list of products required to enter the fishing tackle business. The owner told Dick he was a stupid kid who had no idea what he was doing after he presented his suggestions.
Dick was so hurt inside and promptly left. He went to his grandmother's house, where he had spent much of his childhood, and told her what had happened. Dick's grandmother inquired about the cost of building the store himself. Dick estimated the cost to be $300. His grandmother then went to the cookie jar where she had kept her life savings and handed him $300, telling him, "Do it yourself." Dick put that money to invest in a bait and tackle shop in Binghamton. By the late 1970s, he had expanded his product line to include much of what is now available at DICK'S Sporting Goods.
