THELIFESTORYPROJECTINTERVIEW WITHJEANKETCHAMBEGANONTHE CRISPMORNINGOF

October 10, 2023

as the first hints of sunlight broke through, I stood in front of my bedroom mirror inside our home in Shoreview, MN embarking on a ritualistic dance of getting ready as myself. Today wasn’t just another day; it was the day Jean Ketcham was visiting The Zebra House for the UVM EOL Doula Life Story Project. Ensuring I somewhat matched, I finally stepped into my my White Furry Manitobah Mukluk boots.

Promptly at 11:30 a.m., the door swung open to reveal Jean. And boy, was she a sight! Donning her signature zebra-striped sunglasses, statement jewelry that echoed her bold spirit, and an aura that screamed ‘legend’, she was every bit the icon I remembered. As I ushered her in, offering a steaming cup of my finest coffee, she said, “What do you think if I got a pair of white cowboy boots?”

That question wasn’t just about fashion; it was a time portal. Suddenly, I was transported back to a day stamped in my memory. A day when, after a stint of shock treatment, my mother emerged in what could only be described as a fashion statement for the ages - white cowboy boots. Was Jean’s mention of white cowboy boots a coincidence? (More on that in future editions)

With this delightful juxtaposition of past memories and the present rendezvous, our interview setting felt more like a cozy coffee chat between long-lost pals. As we settled in the basement to hit ‘record’, I felt it in my bones: this wasn’t just the beginning of “The Life Story Project” it was the beginning of us.

VIBRATORS, EDUCATION,

Settling into the coziness and privacy of the basement, a nudge of serendipity whispered to me that today’s rendezvous with Jean was lined with delightful stars. With a glint in her eyes, Jean regaled about her granddaughter's new chapter at The University of Vermont and the progressive educational approaches they offer today. I thought....hold on – the very same place my daughter and I roamed during her university hunt, etching our bond with spontaneous motherdaughter tattoos and now me diving into the EOL Doula Class at UVM and this Life Story Project? And here we are, in Minnesota, worlds away, yet sharing this beautiful connection.

Jean's mention of "progressive educational approaches" had my ears perking up like a dog hearing the rustle of a treat bag. I was all in, eager to hear more. As we ventured deeper into the discussion, Jean painted a picture of a world where human sexuality is embraced in all its complexity, touching on everything from the joys of healthy relationships to intimacy. This refreshing perspective had us pondering the universe and everything in it, including, yes, vibrators. Jean mused over whether to include such a chapter in her book but had second thoughts, fearing it might be too much information?

& UNCHARTED CONVERSATIONS

I thought to myself, could Jean’s book can be that beacon, that safe place where curious minds find answers, where the unspoken becomes spoken, where taboos transform into dialogues?

Reflecting on my own revelations and the moments when knowledge had come from the unlikeliest of sources, I found myself really excited that there may be a day where these topics could be discussed more freely.

This dialogue highlighted the beauty of open conversation and the bridging of gaps between assumptions and reality. Jean, with her extensive experiences, reminded me that while some knowledge may seem universal, there are still many areas enveloped in silence, awaiting the curiosity of eager minds.

In emphasizing the importance of comprehensive and inclusive sexual education, Jean's thoughts resonate with the principle that everyone deserves access to accurate, respectful, and pleasure-centered information about sexuality and relationships

WHEN I SPEAK ON STAGE I DO WANT TO TALK ABOUT VIBRATORS

for women and the health benefits. Jean's words continued to flow with an unmistakable blend of humor, candor, and conviction.

Internally, my thoughts raced ahead, painting a vivid picture of what could be. The vibrant 83-year-old Jean Ketcham, cofounder of "Aging but Dangerous", presenting on stage addressing these “taboo” topics The idea wasn’t just exciting; it felt right. The universe seemed to be connecting dots in ways I hadn’t foreseen

Jean’s intent to share her wisdom with younger generations, to break barriers with humor and understanding, and to create conversations around once-whispered topics, exemplified the power of sharing one ' s truth. And in that moment, I truly believed that if anyone could bridge generational divides and challenge age-old silences, it would be Jean.

THE HEALTHFUL BUZZ BEHIND VIBRATORS

Stress Relief: Aids in the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good hormones, which in turn help to alleviate stress and boost mood.

Improved Sleep: Thanks to their relaxation-inducing properties, regular vibrator use can lead to better sleep quality.

Better Pelvic Floor Health: For women, vibrators can aid in toning pelvic muscles, especially important post-childbirth or during menopause.

Pain Relief: They can alleviate menstrual cramps and even help with certain kinds of chronic pelvic pain.

Increased Circulation: The stimulation they provide can increase blood flow to the genital area, promoting better sexual health and responsiveness.

Enhanced Sexual Awareness: Regular vibrator use can help individuals become more attuned to their bodies, leading to a more fulfilling intimate life.

I was so curious, I had to do some quick research on the health benefits of vibrators.

Two young professionals, representative of the fresh wave of thinkers in many modern organizations, had shown initial interest in the tastefully nude calendar. But when the moment came to seek broader approval for the calendar's showcase, the consensus was clear: the calendar was "too daring."

Jean’s vivid recounting of urging these young minds to breathe new life into the establishment was both humorous and insightful. Though Jean emphasized the importance of discretion in sharing this episode, its core message is undeniably powerful. It's a narrative that highlights the tension between audacity and convention, pushing boundaries, and navigating established beliefs. The young duo hinted at a brighter future, suggesting Jean might have her moment post her book's release.

A TAPESTRY OF TIME: THE ORIGINS OF JEAN'S ALLURE

The ebb and flow of our conversation carried us to deeper waters "Tell me about the beginning," I ventured Jean's expression was momentarily quizzical "The beginning of ABD?" referring to 'Aging But Dangerous'. "No," I said, The beginning of you. " Jean's voice softened, her gaze drifting to a distant past. "I was birthed amidst the simplicity and charm of a small Kansas town. My father played the vital role of the town's bread delivery man, a constant in the daily

lives of our neighbors." Jean's voice took on a reverent tone when she touched upon the memories of her mother. "You know," she began, leaning in, "I never once saw my mother without her makeup. Even in the quiet moments at home, she always had her 'face on ' . Charles of the Ritz wasn't just a brand to her it was an armor, a declaration, an embrace."

"Can you imagine?" Jean continued, eyes twinkling with a mix of pride and wonder "The folks at Charles of the Ritz wanted to send her to New York New York City!" The implication was vast this was an era when such an opportunity was both a tremendous honor and a profound leap "They were one of the top brands in skincare To think, all those years ago, they recognized the unique magic she brought to their line "

Yet, the twinkle in Jean's eyes dimmed slightly as she shared the next part. "She never went. The lights and allure of the Big Apple, the promise of being trained in the very heart of beauty and skincare it was all too overwhelming. She declined. My mother and I," Jean mused, a distant look capturing her features, " we are poles apart. Where I'm a river, constantly surging forward, she was a still pond, reflecting the world but rarely rippling "

Drawing a deep breath, she delved deeper "She had her insecurities Deep-rooted ones My dad, for instance, was an avid golfer and joined the Country Club But my mother? She was embarrassed about our membership there, so much so that she wouldn't set foot on the grounds My brother and I, we made many memories there swimming, playing golf, laughing with friends But mother she always held herself apart, cocooned in her own world."

She paused, reminiscing about a time when her entrepreneurial spirit was in full bloom. "Even when I had my own clothing store, and friends or acquaintances would pop by, eager to meet the dynamic mother of Jean Ketchum, she'd shy away, often not leaving her room "

THE
BEGINNING

THE ORDEALS OF YOUTH

STITCHED IN MEMORY: THE ORDEALS OF YOUTH

With a contemplative pause, Jean looked off into the distance. "There are certain memories," she began slowly, "that become a part of your being Not because they're cherished, but because they shape you in ways you can't even begin to fathom " Her voice was soft, almost as if she was treading on fragile ground "I've penned these down in my book, but sharing them aloud that’s a

different catharsis " "I was but nine," she continued, "when life threw its first curveball Jean leaned in, a glint of mischief in her eyes, mixed with a touch of nostalgia "Alright, buckle up, " she began, chuckling, "because we ' re going way back to when I was just nine You see, I had this emergency appendectomy – I don’t much remember the surgery itself I probably pushed that frightening memory to the back of my mind But oh, the aftermath! That is a tale "

She paused, smirking. "Every night, my dreams became like episodes of a drama series – bits and pieces of my time in the hospital, painted with both stark reality and dreamy exaggerations."

She took a deep breath and continued, "So, the doc said I'd likely start my period early because of the surgery And lo and behold, still in the third grade, it happened Imagine the scene: little Jean, in complete and utter shock, seeing blood for the first time I yelled out for my mother, expecting some comfort "

Her eyebrows shot up, and she threw up her hands dramatically, "But Mother! Oh, she outdid herself that day She walks in, sees the situation, and instead of a soothing word, she just starts screaming and dashes out Off she goes, running across the street, yelling for her sister, 'Maxine! Maxine!' Like it’s some sort of soap opera climax."

Jean's gaze met mine with understanding and acceptance. "She was beautiful, my mother, in so many ways. Yet, she was also a fortress of insecurities. In understanding her, I learned to embrace myself even more fiercely, to stride ahead with purpose, with passion "

As Jean shared these vignettes, the tapestry of her life became even more intricate a mosaic of influences, experiences, and choices that molded the incredible woman before me
