2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM STEPHEN KARAM CHAIR OF THE BOARD

I am pleased to present the Board’s Annual Report for the 2010-2011 school year. The York School has undergone some exciting changes as well as celebrated many successes over the course of the past year. In June, the Board announced the hiring of Conor Jones as our new Head of School. Prior to this appointment, Conor was our Director of Advancement. He has also held various other roles at The York School, including Director of Admissions and Chair of the English Department. Conor’s energy, International Baccalaureate teaching experience and leadership skills, combined with his passion for engaging and communicating with our entire community, promise excellent leadership for many years to come. In last year’s Annual Report Jason Hanson highlighted the completion of our new Lower School campus. As hoped, the expansion of our facilities has enabled York to grow (our 2011-2012 enrolment is over 600 students, a record for York) and to more effectively deliver its programmes at all grade levels. 2010-2011 was a record-breaking year for fundraising, which saw our Advancement team raise in excess of $1.4 million, enabling us to make some dramatic improvements to both campuses. The largest transformation and financial outlay was for the development and construction of a playground at the Lower School campus. Improvements at the Upper School campus included an expanded library, a Grade 12 lounge, a new Fitness Centre and most recently the creation of the new Mac Lab and a small, but much needed, outdoor field in the parking lot. These initiatives were made possible by the generous support of our community, which included over 40% of our parents. Technology and our needs continue to change and evolve, challenging educators to find new and interesting ways to incorporate technology into their programmes. In order to help address those challenges, Justin Medved was appointed as the Director of Instructional Innovation last year. In this role Justin has been working with our teachers, students and parents preparing and educating them for the demands of the 21st century, while also finding innovative ways to incorporate technology into the curriculum. Justin’s hiring as well as some other strategic investments made by The York School will help to ensure that we remain creative in the way we use technology to further our students’ education. Being creative and finding innovative ways both to tell our story and capture the essence of The York School was an important part of developing our new marketing and communication plan. This process began in earnest last year. Our new branding and advertising campaign took many factors into consideration, including the opening of the Lower School campus, taking ownership of Yonge Street, how we wanted to be recognized as we move forward and our relationships

with competing schools. The result of this research is reflected on the new York website, on our transit shelter ads in surrounding neighbourhoods, in our new Prospectus and all of our online ads. The York School prides itself on its international outlook and being openminded about all thoughts and opinions. In keeping with this outlook, we hosted our first TEDx event. TEDxIB@York was a two-day event that brought together IB students from all over the world, members of The York School community and over one hundred other guests to listen to our great speakers. The TEDxIB@York Committee included York alumni, students, parents, faculty and staff as well as other business, technology and design professionals. The entire event was streamed live and people in over 40 countries tuned in to watch. The main event took place at the Ontario Science Centre and was a huge success. On the Athletics front, we celebrated five athletic championships by our students. These included Varsity Ultimate, Junior Girls Volleyball, Senior Boys Volleyball, Senior Curling and Under 14 Girls Basketball, all of which won their division championships. Of note is that our gold medal win by the Ultimate team represented our school’s first-ever Gold for a co-ed team, as well as our first Ultimate championship. As I look back on a successful year I want to say farewell to two friends and outgoing Board members. Zool Kassum joined the Board in 2007 and was a key contributor to the Lower School building acquisitions and renovations. Heather Conolly joined the Board in 2005 after many years of active involvement in our York community. Heather served as the Chair of many committees, including The Guild, the Annual Giving Fund, the Traffic committees for both 1320 and 1639 Yonge Street, as well as many other special events and galas. Zool and Heather’s dedication and commitment to The York School have left a legacy that will benefit our community for many years to come. Both will truly be missed. Best wishes go out to the 2011 graduating class and we look forward to sharing in their future stories of success. I truly hope each of them remains connected with our community. Lastly, a special thank you to each of the members of the Board as well as the many parent volunteers who have selflessly given their time to The York School and supported our mission. Respectfully,

Stephen Karam

MESSAGE FROM CONOR JONES HEAD OF SCHOOL

As you read through this Annual Report you will get a terrific sense of our accomplishments as a school. When you read the report from Stephen Karam, Chair of the Board of Directors, and that from Andrew Kay, Chair of the Finance Committee, you will be assured of the financial well-being, fiscally responsible spending and sound financial footing of our school. The generosity of our community in terms of donations in time, talent and financial support are well outlined in the report from Lynn Clarfield, Chair of the Board Advancement Committee—and for all of these donations we are truly grateful. What is left for me to note in this Annual Report is a quality much harder to describe but equally or perhaps even more important in defining the success of a school. We can record the number of students involved in sports; the amount of scholarship dollars received by our graduates; the number of trips, teams and clubs on offer to all our students. None of these figures will adequately present the intangible quality that is evident in the halls, classrooms and wherever York students are gathered to work, play or compete. That quality is happiness. When I was Director of Admissions for The York School I had the pleasure of meeting many families as they toured the school. The comment I heard most often after one of our ‘average day at York’ tours was that in comparison to other schools the children, teachers and staff seemed to be happy. They were enjoying their work. This surprised many of the families, but it did not surprise me. I know of no clear metric, no key performance indicator or formula that can accurately capture the feeling that exists in the halls, classrooms, or anywhere else York students work, play or compete. The York School is a happy place.

The 2010-2011 school year saw many improvements to the physical plant and the opportunities available to our students. It was a banner year for sports, clubs and academics. The year was a success from any number of vantage points. If student happiness is a quantity that interests you, it was a good year. As I write this, I must note that while last year was a terrific one, I have already seen our students make use of our new Mac Lab to produce videos of incredible quality, I have had the opportunity to spend time at the Lower School and hear the laughter in the new playground, and have observed the supportive cheering of our students in the sports arena and the organized arguments of our debating team. I have learned to read again with our JK and SK students and have myself laughed a great deal, because our students are just amazing. It is a long journey from learning to read in kindergarten to graduation, but together we manage it. I was proud to watch our graduates cross the stage this spring and I extend heartfelt congratulations to all our graduates of 2011. No doubt they are headed for great things and will have a positive impact on the world, and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Sincerely,

Conor Jones

MESSAGE FROM ANDREW KAY CHAIR OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

The year 2010-2011 was a historic one in the evolvement of The York School as we successfully commenced our first year with two campuses, the Lower School at 1639 Yonge Street and the Upper School at 1320 Yonge Street. The fiscal year ended June 30, 2011 not only encompassed the completion of the Lower School leading up to its September 2010 opening but also renovations to the Upper School to enhance the educational facilities and student life for the Upper School students. Renovations to the Upper School included a new Grade 12 student lounge, a state-of-the-art Fitness Centre and an expanded Upper School library, among other improvements. Upgrading the facilities is an ongoing process that allows the school to continually adapt to changes in technology and student and teacher needs as we continue to deliver the best education to our students. I am very pleased to report that the bulk of the Upper School renovations were paid for by a generous donation from a parent and, additionally, the dynamic, newly renovated outdoor space that is now the Lower School playground was entirely funded through the generous donations and efforts of over 100 parents. The challenge of operating two distinct campuses from a facilities, administrative and financial perspective was also met with great success, with only a very minor increase in the number of staff. It was the Finance Committee’s and Senior Managements’ goal that the new facilities and renovations would have no impact on tuition levels. We are pleased to report that we achieved this goal, as our moderate increase in staffing needs with the additional building and finance costs are now supported by increased enrolment throughout all school grades. The 20112012 school year enrolment is at an all-time high, with most grades at or near capacity and an overall increase of approximately 6.5% over the previous year. It will continue to be our intention that tuition fees will be based on the operating needs of the school, while remaining competitive with other GTA independent schools. Balance Sheet Capital assets grew by $1.36 million due to the completion of the new Lower School on Yonge Street as well as the upgrades and modifications made to our Upper School campus. Now that the major renovations at the Lower School are

completed and fully paid for, our mortgage balance as at June 30, 2011 was $10.0 million. This is an increase of $4.6 million from two years ago prior to embarking on our Lower School development and Upper School modifications. Since then we have invested over $7.2 million in both the Upper and Lower School facilities. Our strong balance sheet and our history of prudent fiscal management, along with generous donations from our parent community, have allowed us to complete our strategic plan while maintaining a healthy debt-to-assets ratio. Revenue Revenue from all sources was $15.56 million, which is an increase over last year of $890,000 or 6%. Tuition fees accounted for 86.6% of the total. Registration fees, ancillary services and donations made up most of the balance of revenue. Expenses Expenses totalled $15.8 million. Operating expenses, which exclude mortgage interest, amortization and a non-recurring charge, were 7.8% higher than the previous fiscal year. This percentage increase was expected and is well within reasonable limits given the opening and operation of a second campus. Strong Financial Governance Congratulations go out to our Finance, Facilities and Administration Departments, led by Annette Whiteley, Chief Financial Officer. The 2010-2011 year will be remembered as the year the school transformed itself from a one-campus operation south of St. Clair Avenue to two fantastic facilities on either side of St. Clair. This was achieved seamlessly while controlling our costs and ensuring the school has access to all the necessary resources needed to meet the ever-changing needs of our students, faculty and staff. Well done! Respectfully submitted,

Andrew Kay Chair, Finance Committee

MESSAGE FROM LYNN CLARFIELD CHAIR OF THE ADVANCEMENT COMMITTEE

The mandate of Advancement at The York School is to support the school’s mission of developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are engaged citizens of the world. As we uphold this mission we support the many endeavours undertaken by The York School’s students and faculty. Our fundraising priorities have supported improvements at both of our campuses, including the transformed playground at the Lower School and the new turf at the Upper School. In addition to facilities improvements, we have helped finance co-curricular programmes like TEDxIB@York and computer lab updates. Our community’s commitment to the school is reflected in the generous donations which fund improvements for our students today and in the future. On behalf of the Board I thank The York School community, parents and Alumni for their support and participation in the life of the school. The volunteer hours and donations-in-kind have helped make The York School a place where students can be themselves and be great. I must also take this opportunity to thank the current and past members of the Advancement Committee for their dedication and leadership. Sincerely,

Lynn Clarfield, Chair of the Advancement Committee and Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors

MESSAGE FROM NARGESS KHOSROWSHAHI AND ROBIN STORFER, CO-PRESIDENTS, PARENT GUILD 2010-2011

On behalf of the York Parents’ Association (YPA—formerly The Guild), we would like to take this opportunity to highlight the YPA’s accomplishments during the 2010-2011 school year. It was an amazing year full of noteworthy events that further enriched our strong school community. We carried over many of the popular events from previous years, as well as offering new and exciting

activities for both parents and students. One special event of which we are particularly proud is the Parent Social evening. Instead of going off-site, parents experienced an elegant cooking demonstration and dinner with Chef Ezra Title conducted in the new Lower School cafeteria. The event was sold out, brought Upper and Lower School parents together and got rave reviews. Another success was the Lower School Social evening, which was held at Loots Lounge. This social event for the younger students allow them to come together away from school for some dancing, games and fun. In addition, we introduced a birthday cupcake programme for students in the Lower School. This programme made it easy for parents to order nut-free cupcakes from our on-site caterer. While remaining focused on community-building for the parents and students of The York School, several successful new fundraising initiatives were kicked off. We introduced the first-ever Spring Market which, combined with the Annual Second-Hand Uniform Sale, made for an excellent weekend for the parents. As a direct result of these successful fundraising initiatives and the work of the YPA volunteers, the YPA was able to make significant contributions to the school this year. Our fundraising efforts allowed us to support several school initiatives, including the new turf at the Upper School and the purchase of a new drum kit for the Upper School jazz programme, a climbing rock for the playground at the Lower School, costumes for the Middle School play, ride-on equipment for the Kindergarten classes, brooms for the curling team and other exciting projects that are coming up in this school year. Having a new Lower School campus at 1639 Yonge Street has given us a wonderful new space within which to work. We were able to utilize this space in creative and different ways for events such as Halloween, Treats for Teachers and the Terry Fox Run.

In the spring, The Guild also went through some changes itself. We changed our name to the York Parents’ Association and refocused our mandate. We decided to prioritize community-building, with our primary goals being to enhance the social programming for both students and parents and to foster stronger ties between each campus. In line with our new mandate, the YPA will be holding its Annual General Meeting in May 2012, at which time next year’s YPA Executive will be elected. If you are interested in serving or just learning more, please check out the YPA page on YorkNet. The new policies and election procedures will be posted soon. A Nomination Committee will be forming after the holiday break. Finally, we would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who helped support us this past year. The events at the school run so smoothly because of the dedication of our parent population—we truly could not have done it without you. A very special thank you is extended as well to our York School liaison, Sarah Behl. Sarah was instrumental behind the scenes in ensuring that all events ran smoothly. Grad Gift The graduating Class of 2011 wanted to give back to the school and create a legacy for their class, so they decided to donate money to transform the Student Lounge, now known as the Grade 12 Lounge. Bean bag chairs for hanging out, tables for catching up on work and a nice quiet atmosphere contribute to this space being a favourite destination for Diploma students. A plaque recognizing this generous donation now hangs in the lounge. It reads: The Grade 12 Lounge, through the generosity and support of the Class of 2011. We thank the graduating class (now Alumni!) and hope they will come back to the school to check it out!
