THE EYES AND EARS OF THE STUDENTS

Event Held for Student Support and Understanding Domestic Violence

and Sexual Assault

Editor-in-Chief

On Tuesday, April 8, the Counseling Center hosted their annual Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Event to raise awareness and talk about safety precations for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Present at the event was Tracy Curtis, Community Educator and Outreach Coordinator at the Crisis Center for South Suburbia, who spoke to inform and aim to prevent future domestic violence and sexual assault instances from occurring since.

“This right here is the first big step, becoming educated on it. We will go through signs and how to safely advocate for victims. It’s very important to be able to do that but never to confront the abuser or perpetrator. It’s definitely not safe, they can be extremely volatile. So, it’s always better if a victim comes and discloses to somebody to just be supported and given resources,” Curtis expressed.

Different types of abuse

include physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, mental (psychological), and financial. However, in Illinois and most states, only physical and sexual abuse are criminalized, requiring physical evidence in order for continuation on a case.

“In the United States, we want physical evidence, usually isolated instances of physical assault, to consider there to be domestic abuse,” according to Curtis’ powerpoint presentation.

Curtis explained, “I think it’s important to have these events especially for you all on campus but just for community awareness because domestic

violence and sexual assault both have community impacts. It’s best to educate and raise awareness, especially here on a college campus.”

Curtis delved into the different warning signs to look out for in an abusive relationship, and explained that in many cases of abuse, the victim ends up murdered by their abuser. She continued, “38% of all murders of women are committed by an intimate partner or former intimate partner.”

On Tuesday, April 8, collaborating with the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois, Students for H.O.P.E. hosted a Free Kidney and Diabetes Screening event for preventative care. The event took place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the fourth floor boardroom. The event was labeled as public, encouraging students, their families, and friends to attend.

According to Cyndi Grobmeier, Ed.D, Director of Faculty Development, 96 people were already pre-registered to get tested and walk-ins were also welcomed.

Daniel Lietz, Program Manager of the Illinois Secretary of State’s organ/tissue donor program, attended the event and explained why it is important for the community to care about their kidney and organ health, as well as getting early detection for kidney disease for prevention.

“The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois is a great way to get an early detection of

chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease in Illinois is the seventh leading cause of death, with over 30 million people in the United States that have early stages or some form of chronic kidney disease that can be detected by a simple test, which is what they’re doing today. It’s a big problem,” he said.

John McNamara, Vice President of Students for H.O.P.E., and Giluniana Islas, Orientation & Belonging Coord., also explained the importance of this event.

“The kidney screening event was an important one to plan because a lot of SXU students don’t have access to this kind of medical care otherwise. We figured, as Students for H.O.P.E., that organizing this event would combat this issue,” said McNamara.

Islas explained, “This event was so important to have on campus, and I am so happy I got to attend. While I am fortunate enough to have access to healthcare, this is such an incredible resource to bring to

A Celestial City: Spring Formal 2025 Information

Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) annual spring formal will be taking place on Friday, April, 11 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel from 6-10 p.m.

This year’s theme is a Celestial City, and students are encouraged to dress in theme wearing “colors like blues and purples” to fit into the “celestial vibe,” shared Evelyn Martinez, Vice President of Student Government Association (SGA).

Students are requested to wear formal attire. However, “no one will necessarily be denied entry for their attire unless it’s inappropriate. We want students to be able to express themselves through their outfits and would love to see students get creative,” Martinez continued.

Martinez explained that planning the spring formal can be difficult and takes months of hard work and dedication from members of the Student Activities Board (SAB), Student Government Association (SGA), and Student Life Administrators. Planning begins during the fall semester and ends the week of formal.

“As much fun as it is to plan and execute Spring Formal, it is not an easy thing to do. However, all the hard work and all the time spent is worth it when we see how much students enjoy one of the biggest events SAB & SGA host,” stated Martinez.

Check-ins will begin at 3:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall. Martinez shared, “We do encourage students to make sure that they come with their plus one and/ or friend group that they intend to bring. To make sure that they aren’t scrambling and worrying at the last minute. As well as, making sure that they bring their state issued ID’s, SXU ID, and their Den pass. And make sure to bring a jacket if you want to enjoy the outdoor terrace.”

Those who are over 21 and interested in purchasing alcoholic beverages must provide a valid ID. After providing a valid ID, said students will receive a wristband, as well as drink tickets for the cash bar.

Buses will depart from campus at 4:45 p.m. Students and their guests are required to take the provided transportation. However, if accommodations are needed, they “will be assessed

on a case by case basis, and should’ve been asked about early in advance,” stated Martinez.

Once arriving at the venue, students can settle down at their tables and wait for food to be served. The provided food will include a starter, main course, and dessert. If students have any dietary restrictions they were asked to fill out the Dietary restriction form on the SXU Den by Friday, April 4 at noon.

Dinner will include lobster bisque served with cornbread muffins, airline chicken breast with demi-glaze sauce, roasted

garlic potatoes, asparagus, and carrots. Coffee and tea will be served alongside red berry mousse and chocolate covered strawberries for dessert.

Before deciding what music will be played at the event, students were asked to fill out a song request form to share with the DJ performing at the event by April 4 at noon.

Almost all tickets were sold, with ticket sales ending on April 7 at noon. Prices increased by $5 closer to the end date of ticket sales.

When asked why ticket prices

increase closer to the date of the formal, Martinez explained, “We increase the prices closer to the date, as it is something that has been done for a while.”

“The Hyatt Regency in Chicago is a beautiful venue. However, if you would like to see how it’ll look once decorated you’ll have to attend Spring Formal,” Martinez said.

RA Adriana Holds Event

Spreading Kindness

On Thursday, April 3, Resident Assistant (RA), Adriana Witkus, hosted an event called “Spread Kindness One Note At A Time.”

This event was held in the Pacelli Lounge from 4-5 p.m.

At Saint Xavier University (SXU), RAs organize monthly events that are focused on promoting one of the core values. Throughout the academic year, each month represents one of the seven core values, hospitality, diversity, respect, excellence, compassion, integrity, and learning for life. However, some of the core values may repeat throughout the school year.

With it being April, Witkus stated, “Since this month is dedicated to showing acts of service, I decided to do an event where students would show service to each other.”

Service is a core value that encourages students to give back to others.

In this event, students were invited to write inspirational quotes on a post-it-note to give to others. While students wrote to other students, they were provided with cookies and cupcakes.

Valentino Gist, an attendee, stated, “I enjoyed taking time to go to a chill event where I was able to enjoy some snacks and brighten up someone’s day.”

Many students, like Gist, were able to share uplifting messages that not only made others feel

campus for students, staff, faculty, and community members who might not have that privilege.”

According to the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois, “over 37 million people in the United States are estimated to have chronic kidney disease” and “the leading causes of kidney failure are diabetes and uncontrolled high blood pressure.”

The Kidney foundation not only aims to help people with chronic kidney disease, they also promote healthy living.

better but also gave the SXU students a sense of belonging.

Gist continued by stating, “I gave one of my friends a postit note that I wrote. It was nice knowing that I made their day.”

Witkus continued saying, “I really wanted to do this event because I know when I am having a rough day, it always helps me to feel better when someone shares some kind words with me.”

“As the academic year comes to a close, I really wanted to have an event where students could come together and have time where they aren’t worrying about studying or doing homework,” he continued.

As the semester winds down, the RAs encourage students to continue spreading kindness and supporting one another one note at a time.

RAs are continuing to promote their future events on The Den, The Den is frequently updated with events that RAs are taking part in.

Domestic violence can be influenced by the observation of others, experience, reinforcement, culture, family, communities, and peer groups. It can also happen to anyone of any race, gender, and religion, Curtis shared.

Domestic homicides rates increased by 110% since 2023.

One of the most common instances of abuse before death is strangulation, which increases the victims rate of fatality, meaning that the next time a victim is strangled it could potentially lead to death, according to Curtis.

Curtis further explained that the presence of a gun in a domestic violence instance can increase the risk of a homicide by 1000%, doubling the rate it was when she first started her position at the Crisis Center for South Suburbia (500%).

Before an abuse instance occurs, a cycle of violence almost always takes place. This cycle has to do with “power and control” that the abuser wants from the victim. Abusers may not participate in each stage of the cycle, but the most common are considered: the pleasant phase, the pursuit phase, the remorse phase, the abuse phase, and the tension phase.

over their victim “to dominate their partner and limit their freedom,” shared Curtis. This can be used through isolation, gaslighting, and monitoring, and is typically used in most domestic abuse cases.

“While coercive control can be found in any type of relationship, it’s most common in heterosexual relationships in which the man uses coercive control against the women,” she continued.

One in three women in an domestic abuse instance report being a victim of coercive control.

The importance of recognizing these signs was discussed as well as plans to ‘escape’ and ‘cope.’ These included but are not limited to understanding warning signs, making the environment safe, preparing for a quick exit, internal coping strategies, asking for support from family/friends, and finding professionals and agencies that can offer assistance.

Those who were not preregistered were sent to a signup table near the entrance for assistance in registering for testing. Along with this, there was also a table that provided informational sheets and packets of kidney disease, organ donation, how to become more active, dieting tips for those who have kidney disease, and information on protein, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium intake.

“As far as organ donation goes, nationally, there are over 100,000 people that are currently waiting for organ transplants.

85% of them are waiting for a kidney. So, from our standpoint, if we can eliminate more people getting sick and being on the list it’ll give people who are already on the list a better shot at getting a kidney transplant. It is vital that they do something like this and to raise awareness about healthy lifestyles and habits of how you eat and exercise,” explained Lietz.

During the event there were different stations available for testing. These included a urinalysis, blood glucose, body mass index, blood pressure, a blood draw, and condults after testing.

Lietz stated, “Our program at the Organ Donor Secretary of State’s office has 8 organ donor coordinators that go throughout the state and cover all the way from Carbondalle to Rockford, Illinois. Annually, for organ donor

S.O.U.L. Hosts Prayer Journal Event

On Thursday, April 3, a new RSO (Registered Student Organization) called S.O.U.L (Showing Others Unconditional Love), held a prayer journal event in the Wiseman Lounge.

S.O.U.L’s main mission is to give African American Christians a safe space to strengthen their faith and explore their connection with God.

The event lasted about an hour, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and anyone was welcome to come and participate.

At the event, attendees were allowed to decorate prayer journals for personal use. Markers, faith-themed stickers, stick-on gems, and small brown journals were laid out for everyone at tables.

A prayer journal is a journal to record thoughts, feelings, prayers, Bible verses, and more. According to S.O.U.L, the goal is to deepen your connection with God and reflect on your spiritual journey.

They’re also intended to be meaningful down the line, as people can look back on their old journals and see how their faith has evolved.

“We wanted our first event to be decorating prayer journals because many people may not

have them, and we wanted people to be able to have a place to put their thoughts or prayers as they document their walk with Christ,” said Taylor McDonald, co-president of S.O.U.L.

Around the room, people chatted and shared their faith while working on their prayer journals. The organization fostered a calm and relaxed environment.

Paris Brown, the other co-president of S.O.U.L, decorated her own prayer

journal at the event and filled the cover with faith-oriented stickers. All of them serve to inspire, such as one that read: “For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).”

“For our first event, I think we had a pretty good turnout. We’re still getting our foot in the door as far as being an RSO, but we hope to keep creating safe and intentional spaces where students can feel loved, seen, and spiritually refreshed,” said Paris Brown.

Office of Belonging and Engagement Hosts Henna Event

On Thursday, April 3, the Office of Belonging and Engagement hosted a henna event in honor of Arab-American Heritage Month.

The event was held in the diner atrium from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Henna is a body art with cultural and spiritual significance in many cultures such as Arab and Middle Eastern.

events, we did around 600 last year. Throughout the state we are doing 2 a day.”

He continued, “For health fairs, we probably do relatively over 100 in state per year, where we partner with the National Kidney Foundation and other organ donor organizations throughout the state. We try to raise awareness towards organ health and transplantation.”

“I, personally, would love it if we as Students for H.O.P.E. planned more events like the kidney screening in the future,” expressed McNamara.

Students were able to choose from a variety of tattoo designs, including flowers, swirls, hearts, and dots, as well as options featuring different colored glitter.

This event welcomed Susan from Sahara Henna Designs & Body Art. While students were getting their henna tattoos, many of them were asking Susan about her knowledge of henna tattoos and the different types of cultures.

Student Anahi Hernandez, an attendee, stated, “I learned that it is all organic matter for the ink.”

Susan explained that she uses the organic matter in her ink to prevent irritation to the skin but to also help the tattoo last longer. She also talked about her experiences working at weddings for Arab cultures. The weddings would host an event the day before the ceremony for the wedding party to get henna tattoos. She explained that it is very popular in Arab culture to have henna tattoos of symbols from their culture.

Nadia Ghouleh, an attendee,

stated, “As a Palestinian-American student attending SXU, I thought it was nice to see my culture being represented at school, so I knew that I wanted to support and attend this event. I love seeing how SXU can represent the diversity of the students and the staff, so I also really love to attend the different culture-focused events we have.”

Hernandez continued, “I think it was a great event to showcase a tradition in their culture and wanted to experience it.”

Ghouleh also stated “ I would like to thank SXU for hosting these events for Arab-American Heritage Month. It’s valuable to see my culture be represented and shared in our SXU community.”

Throughout this event, Susan gave the attendees her business cards. On the back of her card, it explained what the attendees needed to do to take care of their new tattoo. Some include keeping out of water for 24 hours, not

scrubbing the area, allowing the paste to come off by itself, and allowing the tattoo to last about a week or two.

Ghouleh continued saying, “I would definitely go to more of these types of events. I think that one of SXU’s strengths is the wide variety of cultures represented by its students and staff, and I think it’s so important for us to share our cultures, so we can better our community.”

Throughout April, events will be held on campus for ArabAmerican Heritage Month. The Den is where students can register for any upcoming events.

Students are encouraged to attend the upcoming events for Arab-American Heritage Month. Some events include the “Bisan:” Film Screening, the April Lunch-and-Learn, and the ArabAmerican Achievement Awards.

If a student would like to get in touch with Susan, she can be reached at (708)-738-2240.

“The prayer journal event was really special. Although it was simple, it was meaningful. Just seeing people take time to slow down and reflect meant a lot to us,” Paris Brown continued.

As a brand new RSO, S.O.U.L is working hard to establish itself on campus. With how well the prayer journal event went and the turnout it got, S.O.U.L is excited about doing similar events in the future.

Whatever events are next for S.O.U.L, the goal will stay the same: provide a judgmentfree space for SXU students to explore their faith, particularly African American students. To those who wish to learn more about S.O.U.L and their upcoming events, S.O.U.L’s Instagram is up and running. There, interested students can learn more about S.O.U.L’s mission and future events. All upcoming events will also be listed on The Den.

I Don’t Trust Family Vloggers. Here’s Why:

Biopic Casting: Successfully Embodying the Icon

After seeing the recent casting for the upcoming biopics on the members of The Beatles, I heavily questioned the choices. While biopics are important for the storytelling of historical figures, the key components in a successful one is its casting and actors dedication.

There was a plan to produce four separate biopics about each member of The Beatles. The casting included Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

I noticed very quickly that the resemblance of the actors to the members of the band were not very accurate. It felt as if they were chosen because of their current rise in popularity and their known heartthrob fame.

I do love these actors from their previous works, but because of their lack of resemblance, I hope they can make it up through an accurate portrayal of each Beatle.

I understand that looks don’t always equate to a great performance, but fame doesn’t either. Casting directors can get caught up on an actor’s “star power” because it can bring

numbers into the box office.

By using these actors, producers can naturally expect younger audiences will run to watch these films whether they know The Beatles or not.

Obviously from a business perspective this decision is quite smart, but there is a lingering worry that choices made in the name of profit undermine the subject of the biopic. In the end, it’s disrespectful to the historical figure.

Especially in a movie about a specific icon, they should be honored in the best way possible without another icon overpowering their story.

Actor Timothee Chalamet was casted to play a biopic about Bob Dylan, which had many mixed reactions because people were unsure if his performance would do enough justice since he was popularized for his looks.

However, once the film came out, Chalamet received large amounts of praise for his spot on impression as well as the amount of work he put into embodying Dylan in the end.

The work he put into becoming Bob Dylan is a prime example of what cast members should be doing. He watched videos observing Dylan’s mannerisms, singing voice, and took about 5 years mastering the

guitar.

Similarly, actor Val Kilmer put in extensive preparation to play the role of Jim Morrison in the biopic of The Doors.

This involved extensive musical preparation to match Morrison’s vocal style and even a physical transformation.

Taking this into account, people who are being casted in a biopic need to have this type of huge dedication toward researching the icon, so they can portray them in the truest way possible.

Both of these actors delivered a successful performance that people enjoyed watching because they were able to perfectly mimic these artists as if they were actually on screen.

Surface level traits aren’t the only factors to consider either when it comes to embodying these figures. It is also important to understand their struggles and motivations so that their grit can be shown in the film.

If an actor only focuses on the surface level of who they need to portray, it will end up coming out as shallow and inauthentic. A person is more than their surface level, for there is always another level that needs to be dug into.

Once both of these factors are considered and incorporated, an actor will be able to give a

An Ode to the Man in the Orange Vest

On the morning of Sunday, March 23, as I was driving on I-294 and an oil tanker overturned, causing a massive fire to burn. Every vehicle began to stop, and the next thing you know, everyone was running.

In the moment, I couldn’t help but think of the scene of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” when Doc Ock approaches Peter Parker on the highway, and everyone was running. However, this time around, someone was going car-to-car explaining why everyone was running.

It was a man wearing a neon vest, saying “help” on the back. I believe he was a highway safety officer. He explained exactly what was happening. “Oil truck might blow, get out of your car as fast as you can and run,” he yelled. Essentially, as the fire began, oil began leaking from the truck onto the highway. The oil ended up being underneath cars, and if lit on fire, the cars could have possibly caught on fire as well. With this, there was an extremely high chance that the oil tanker was going to explode. The fear of God shot into my soul, and I began running for my life.

At least two hundred people were running besides me. There were children, senior citizens, and adults alike. I’d never been in such a tragedy before. Seeing children clutching their stuffed animals tightly was enough to make me

performance that has depth and emotion. The audience will be able to further understand the story and feel the emotional weight of it.

It also is worth recognizing that household Hollywood names don’t always need to be on the table for casting. Unfamiliar and lesser known actors have the ability to bring justice and depth to a role just as well.

Additionally, this decision can eliminate the chances of popular stars overpowering the story of the biopic and even give a small actor a chance to debut their talents.

In all, biopics are so significant in helping spread and share the story of an individual that brought many people joy. Whether they

are dead or alive, they should be honored in the best way possible because these films are preserving their image, their legacy. When time goes on, these biopics might be all that’s left of their stories. Older audiences can look back and reminisce on these people, meanwhile, younger audiences can have a chance to learn about the historical significance of someone they weren’t around to know.

Casting directors should always prioritize the impact an actor will have on the role, because it’s affecting how someone’s story is being told. When done right, the biopic can be transformative and powerful enough to make a lasting impression on its viewers.

cry.

I made multiple phone calls explaining what was happening, trying to maintain my composure.

As the crowd of people distanced themselves from the fire, there was one man trying to calm everyone down. That man just so happened to be the one in the orange vest.

He had a walkie talkie on his belt, and was actively picking up and talking to the authorities onsite. With every update, he told everyone what was going on.

People would ask questions, and he had answers for every single one of them. He even offered his jacket to a young man who was cold. It’s people like this, that I consider to be heroes.

In the media, people think that superheroes are the made up people that fight crime. To me, heroes are the people who go out trying to help others even when they themselves are in danger.

As we all continued to stand by the edge of the highway, waiting to see an explosion, the man in the vest decided to go check in with firefighters. We were all scared that when he would get up there, the explosion would happen. However, it didn’t.

He returned with news from the firefighters, that the fire had been completely extinguished. However, the oil needed to be cleared from I-294 before anyone could continue their drive.

It was a scary situation, and I think that the only reason I stayed calm was because the man had been there for us. Such selflessness is something that I don’t think

anyone except God himself can live up to.

After an hour of standing by, we were allowed to go back to our vehicles. However, it wasn’t time to go yet. I never thought I’d ever be walking in the middle of the highway, but here we are.

The man kept walking up and down, asking if people were okay.

It’s an action that I cannot forget.

As we all began driving off, going our separate ways, I had a realization. I don’t think anyone thanked him for everything he did that day. I felt bad, honestly.

I do have to say this, though:

To you, whomever you may be, I want to thank you. Many lives could have been taken if things hadn’t been under control. You saved us from what could have been our final outings. You are a hero. Remember that.

Growing up, I frequently watched family YouTube channels like The Ballinger Family, among a few others. Because I was so young, I never saw a problem with parents whose content was centered around the lives of their children.

However, in recent years, a number of family vloggers have proven to display harmful or even abusive behavior.

Recently, I took it upon myself to watch “Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke,” a Hulu docuseries released on Feb. 27 that provides viewers with an account from the family of Ruby Franke, a former YouTube influencer/“mommy vlogger” who was arrested in Aug. 2023 on six counts of aggravated child abuse, of life with Franke behind the scenes in the years leading up to her arrest.

After watching the docuseries, I have pondered other family vlogging channels who, like Ruby Franke, have proven to be problematic. Another instance that comes to mind is YouTube comedian and family vlogger Colleen Ballinger, sister of Chris Ballinger, one of the co-founders of the Ballinger Family account.

While there are no allegations of any kind regarding Colleen’s behavior towards her own three young children, a multitude of damning actions from her past resurfaced online in June of 2023, one being a video of Ballinger placing an underage girl named Becky in a suggestive position onstage at one of her live shows in 2018.

A more extreme example, similar to the case of Ruby Franke, is the DaddyOFive YouTube channel, which was run by Mike Martin, a Maryland father who

would post videos physically and emotionally abusing his children, hiding the true, evil nature of his actions behind the label of “pranks.”

A common denominator between all of these parent vloggers is that they all partake in what has been coined as “sharenting,” which Wikipedia defines as “a portmanteau of ‘sharing’ and ‘parenting’ describing the practice of parents publicizing a large amount of potentially sensitive content about their children on internet platforms, most notably on social media.”

Franke and Martin in particular have been known to post horrifically intrusive content of their children. Franke, in one case, after her eldest son was expelled from school for repeated behavioral mishaps, posted a video to millions of subscribers detailing the expulsion.

Similarly, Martin would post so-called “prank” videos, often physically abusing his children and forcing his children to do the same to each other during them: in one instance, Martin had his stepson slap his daughter for not completing a water bottle flip successfully, after which the young girl is seen crying.

It seems that there is a trend of distasteful, unethical, and often illegal behavior within vlogger families. Chad Franke, the eldest child of Ruby Franke, who also has firsthand experience with a number of other family vloggers,

seems to agree.

“The stuff that my mom did behind the scenes, like, you know, yelling, or ‘get back in place!’ or ‘say that again!’ or, you know, the sternness–that wasn’t just my mom—as well, I mean, a lot of, you know, vloggers and parents who are putting their kids on camera, they act the exact same way,” Chad Franke said in an interview with People magazine, recounting instances of other children he knew in vlogger families who suffered similar harsh treatment from their parents as he had from his own mother.

But, surely it can’t be all family vloggers. There must be some who are genuinely innocent people just trying to have fun and have a passion for sharing their lives with the world… right?

The issue, I would argue, is not whether or not family vloggers are well-intentioned people. It’s even possible that Ruby Franke began sharing her life on YouTube without any particular ill intentions (though what they morphed into is certainly up for debate).

However, intention does not always equal impact. Regularly forcing one’s own children to frequently do anything that only benefits a parent is inherently exploitative, whether these parents realize it or not.

Like many other things throughout history, family vlogging is often defended with reference to the intentions of the

vlogger, rather than the impact of their actions. As a result, family vlogging remains a widely accepted practice.

I don’t suppose an influencer posting videos or photos with their child here and there is much of an issue, but when their private lives are constantly blasted all over online, especially not by their own doing, it honestly raises a huge red flag for me that something is off. All too often, this has proven to be the case. This makes it immensely difficult for me to consume content that is heavily based on the creator’s underage children. There is a clear difference when a young person is making content on account of their own free will, and when a camera is simply shoved in front of their face for a parent’s page. All of this gives reason as to why I am so viscerally in support of California’s decision to pass Senate Bill 764, which requires content creators whose content features children at least 30% of the time must set aside a proportionate percentage of the income made from said content for the child, who will have full access to those funds once they turn 18. Because of the inherent exploitative nature of family vlogging when young children are heavily involved, especially when it is clearly their parents who are driving the content, it isn’t content I find I can enjoy consuming anymore.

Our Generation’s Sad Fashion

Pajamas in Public is not a Cute Look

When I was little, I always thought people dressed cool in college. They were able to wear whatever they wanted and experiment with cool style choices. As I got to college, I realized the people with the cool clothes were usually the ones who lived in the city.

While Saint Xavier University may be technically in the City of Chicago, I still consider it a suburban school, filled with suburban students, and suburban styles. I was extremely disappointed to see that almost everyone I go to school wears their pajamas or the same outfits as everyone else. Everyone looks the exact same from hairstyles all the way down to their shoes. Where’s the personality?

There are a select few I’ve noticed that like to experiment with their clothes and actually try to make themselves look presentable, and it brings me such joy. What does not bring me joy is seeing people purposely looking a mess. I thought we left that in high school, but apparently not. I mean, I understand the

want to be comfortable, but there’s a difference between comfort and generally not caring about your appearance. There’s a time and place for that, and it’s not in public.

Showing up to class like you just rolled out of bed and putting in zero effort shows how little people care anymore.

It’s a bit embarrassing to have to present a project in class

and try to look professional when the people in your group are showing up in house slippers and flip flops. It’s honestly filthy too, particularly when they walk back in and around their homes with the same slippers. What gets me even more is when I witness people wearing Nike slides or crocs with no socks. That is absolutely horrific. It’s really not that hard to put on a pair of socks and have some dignity.

It’s like no one has a sense of self-awareness. Maybe it’s just my generation, and if it is, my generation needs to pull it together. I might sound like a hater, but so be it. I just wish I was surrounded by more people who tapped into their professional and creative side.

Society used to care about fashion, and I’m not talking about Shein fashion. Whoever buys clothes from Shein can stay far away from me. I’m talking about REAL fashion, an artistic take to clothing.

Nowadays, it’s a rare occurrence that I meet someone else who enjoys putting together something unique to wear each morning. I used to walk through the malls when I was little and see so many cool people wearing cool clothes, and now all I see is everyone trying to be the same as everyone else.

What happened to being yourself? You may argue, “well I am being myself, I just like the clothes that everyone else wears.” I mean there’s really no problem in that, you like what you like, but I still think it’s boring.

Others may argue, “I don’t have the money for the clothes I like.” I guarantee if I hit up a local thrift store I can find you a whole new wardrobe that fits your preferred style for under fifty bucks. And, in all honesty, it’s the people that only shop at the mall that I hear complaining. If you want to keep hurting the environment, that’s on you.

I do, however, miss seeing people with crazy out-of-the ordinary outfits. I mainly only see cool outfits online. I think this can have a lot to do with social media though. People take a picture of their cute outfit or a video and it’s like as soon as the video ends or the picture is taken they switch back to their “normal” clothes and normal is boring.

I, myself, don’t want to dress up everyday. I mean even I want to throw on a pair of sweats every once and awhile, but come on, bring the creativity back people. It’s about time you do.

Revisiting HYYH 10 Years Later

HYYH (화화화화) or “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt.

1” was BTS’ third extended play released April 29, 2015. With its tenth anniversary coming up, I thought it was no better time to revisit the iconic tracks from this album.

“The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” represents a major shift in BTS’ discography. They started to lean away from their gritty image and settled into something new. It was the start of their current sound and arguably remains as one of their best works.

My personal favorite track off this album is the intro titled “Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment In Life.” It’s so simple yet so beautiful. It features a melancholic solo rap from member Suga that really sets the tone for the rest of the album.

The best way I could describe the vibe of this album is bittersweet youth. I always get an intense feeling of nostalgia when listening to any song from this era, even though I wasn’t a fan at the time of its release. I think the members do a wonderful job of capturing the stage of life they were in at the time.

Many of the tracks are yearning love songs, and others are fun spunky tracks that show off the group’s charms. Most notably, the title track “Dope.”

“Dope” is one of the tracks that stayed true to their early grit,

but it feels less delinquent. It’s clear that the group’s confidence grew and they settled into themselves.

It’s a dynamic song that has a lot going on in a way that keeps you entertained.

The music video is also one of my favorites from the group. It was distinct from their previous ones and still stands out to me in comparison to newer ones. I love how it represents that youthful underdog energy the group had at the time.

A highlight track off this album definitely has to be “I Need You.” It’s the song that got BTS their first music show win on SBS MTV’s “The Show” and for good reason.

It’s a track describing pining that’s done so artfully. The lyrics discuss missing a girl after a tumultuous relationship that came to an end. What I love about it is how the lyrics are delivered.

The emotion in this song is intense and hard hitting, I feel

Stanza Bonanza

Flooded Brass

A drain does not trickle or drip, it echos and resounds. It maps shapes in sounds like a great flooding brass. Its piping trumpets the fall of a thousand streams, as air dances out of its street covers, billowing and belching a myriad of sounds that lack stagnation or reframe. It calls unto no fret for it doesn’t feint the notion of the reason behind its evoking emotions, instead finding solace, in its instrumental interplay unbound

Gen Z Nintendo’s Unique Charm

Nintendo is set to release the ever anticipated Switch 2 in June, but truthfully I’m still stuck on the DS and Wii line.

When thinking of old Nintendo, most think of the “retro” consoles like the NES or N64, but for Gen Z, our nostalgia lives with the (3)DS and Wii/ WiiU. Though, it is strange to think of these devices as being “nostalgic” now.

in the present. I still vividly recall yelling at my 3DS trying to get my dog to comprehend my mumbled kid voice telling it to spin. It did end up bringing together some of the TRIO office, with many finding amusement in the virtual dog refusing to listen.

A few even attempted to help get it to listen, but to no avail unfortunately.

Meet Craig J. Harris: Journey Into the Entertainment Industry

convinced of the lyrics. The music video is also beautifully shot and helps push the song’s narrative in a way that draws you into the story.

I could go on about this album and its arguably even better successor, “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt. 2.”

It’s one of my favorites of BTS’ discography and always comes to mind when I think of BTS’ signature sound.

Above all, it marks the start of their one of a kind exponential growth over the years. Just a year after its release, the group became the first from a small company to win a Daesang—the highest honor an artist can receive in Korea.

BTS’ story as a group of underdogs truly cements that no dream is truly impossible, and I think HYYH perfectly encapsulates the passion and determination that brought the group to where they are today.

I recently spent some time playing with my old 3DS in an attempt to use my phone less and it’s truly brought me an immense amount of joy. It’s a different type of serotonin you can’t get from anything else. Something about it transports you to a greater place, even just for a little bit.

For a few days, I actually brought it to campus to show some friends and play during downtime.

To my (partial) surprise, it brought them as much joy as it did me. It struck up conversations even with those not close to me.

In the Xavierite office in particular, some of the staff and I chatted about Pokemon and our favorite games from the series.

Pokemon Black and X seemed to be favorites among us. It was nice to be reminded of why I loved the 3DS and its games in the first place.

Funnily, I quickly rediscovered certain frustrations. The most humorous thing was trying to teach my Nintendog new tricks. Thankfully, it was far less stressful

The most beautiful surprise I found while using my 3DS, though, was realizing how it was a snapshot of my childhood. I found various photos and videos, many of which captured important memories—summers in Mexico, accompanying my big brothers to the airport, and so many more.

It’s harder to recall what you’re like at that age until you’re faced with it. It was endearing to see what was most important to me then. In comparison, I don’t have nearly as strong of a connection with the Switch line, which is natural as I had grown up with the older devices.

I was around 13 when the first Switch came out and knew then it didn’t resonate with me completely. It didn’t feel as convenient as my 3DS, nor did it feel as fun as my Wii.

Of course, I still used it frequently and still do pick it up every so often even now, but it could never give me that same serotonin boost. Though it is

It’s not often that you meet someone who has been brave enough to take such a path into the world of film and television. Craig J. Harris, who has been a producer, actor, writer, stuntman, and even a voiceover actor, was kind enough to meet with me recently to share his experience and journey into the entertainment industry.

Throughout our interview, Harris spoke about his struggles, breakthroughs, and the very human moments that made his career. “I’ve been doing it ever since,” he said, “Once again, I like to be multifaceted because it keeps me grounded in every facet of the production, so that when I’m in a position as an executive producer, I can understand the perspective of a stunt person, of an actor, of a writer, of a director, because I’ve worked those jobs.”

Harris is also well known behind the scenes. As a veteran TV producer and creative writer, he has his works aired on networks like CNN, A&E, HGTV, Discovery, and Lifetime.

He has won five Emmy Awards and four Telly Awards. He’s acted in known shows like Empire, Prison Break and Shameless.

He’s also produced documentary series like Chicagoland and wrote award winning projects like Skin Complex.

Harris was even recognized on the 2020 Reel Chicago Black List. His experience is proof that

you can be a person of creativity, follow your instincts, and explore each opportunity as it comes along.

In the beginning of the interview, Harris started thinking back to his youth. He talked about how he grew up in a family that valued both education and creative imagination.

“Imagination ruled supreme in our household,” Harris said, He mentioned that he was surrounded by music, history, and encouragement to dream for something more. A mindset that would later guide his path in the entertainment industry. Before Harris committed to entertainment full time, he had already spent about a decade working in information technology. But during that time, something started to shift. As he mentioned in our interview, it was a moment of quiet reflection that

caused what he expressed as an “existential worry.”

“And I stepped back... I heard this huge sigh... and it just set off a chain of existential worry, right?

Because I was like, what am I doing?”

That moment led him to a conversation with his wife, one that would change the direction of his life. “I told her, I want to quit this job and I want to go into the performing arts. I felt like the best way forward was to jump in with both feet.”

Once Harris made the transition, he got himself into any part of the entertainment industry he could be. His early starts were focused on whether he was doing stunts, acting in TV shows, or even just contributing to productions. When asked about his stunt work and how he prepares mentally for the risk. He responds, “When I’m

The Brewed: Chicago’s Coffee Shop for Horror-Lovers

Sunny skies, warmer weather, and… zombies getting their own unique display? It is a horrorthemed celebration all year long at Chicago’s The Brewed, a coffee shop perfect for caffeine lovers who also enjoy their fair share of scares.

When I first walked into The Brewed, I was overwhelmed by all of the decorations surrounding me. I am a fan of October and all things of that nature, so there was a lot to take in. From the standout purple entrance on the corner of the street to the hanging sculpture that greets guests, I was slowly falling in love with the place.

Aside from the hanging sculpture, the coffee shop has checkered floors with a rainbow of colors in every corner, the main one being the purple over the walls. There is a variety of seating, with different sections of stools, couches, and booths.

I was so caught up in looking around me that by the time I got to the cashier to order, I had not had a chance to look at the actual menu. While I ended up ordering my usual iced vanilla latte, there are some specials that The Brewed is known for.

Specials include: Firestarter, tangerine ancho chili latte; Skull Island, banana mocha; Kaijuice, salted pistachio matcha latte; Reagent, espresso tonic; and Leland Palmer, cold brew lemonade.

On top of the specials, The Brewed serves all types of coffee you can typically find at a coffee

preparing for stunt roles, I continue to learn from some of the best stunt men in the business, and I make sure that I keep my exercise and diet conducive to that sort of work. It’s about staying in shape and being ready for any opportunity that comes up.”

For him, it shows that he is always prepared and open to any opportunity that comes along. He’s open to taking on new challenges, whether it’s learning stunt work or exploring different roles.

Another growth in Harris’s career came when he decided to move behind the camera. While many dream of being the star in front of it, he mentioned that real creative control remains in the roles of writing and producing.

Harris’ transition to writing and producing gave him the opportunity to create his own works and take control of his career.

Harris mentioned, “There are so many opportunities in the production industry and television, film, or just creative content… If you’re building a career behind the camera as a producer, you can start creating your own content and even hire yourself. I’d say to your audience: think about a career behind the camera. It’s rewarding, it gives you creative control, and it pays well.”

In an industry where on screen talent can come and go as fast as an opportunity, Harris’s choice to step behind the camera as a writer and producer is a

reminder that the most lasting impact is created. Harris’s journey shows that it is often when you are behind the camera that you have the most power.

One recurring conversation we had was about the importance of mentorship. Harris spoke about the challenges of finding a mentor in an industry where people are “headstrong and ambitious”. But eventually, “Only one person actually really invested in me and became my mentor out of all those years, and his name is Gary Sherman. I’m a television producer today because Gary took a chance on me”.

Now, with years of experience, he takes the opportunity to mentor up and coming talents. He believes that, “God provides opportunity for you, whether you’re a believer or not… if it’s not meant for you, you’re not going to get it. Not everything is for you, but the things that are meant for you, are for you. Nobody can deny me my blessings because they’re mine.”

So, for anyone looking to make it, this is testament to having faith in yourself and taking that leap when the right opportunity comes your way.

Harris’s story reminds us that the road to success is going to have both risks and rewards. So, whether you’re an upcoming actor, a writer, and so on. His story is a reminder that taking a leap of faith can result in something greater.

shop along with a variety of tea and pastries. The iced vanilla latte was pretty good, but I would love to go back to try some of the more unique items on the menu.

Along with selling drinks and food, there is also a case near the front full of horror movies on DVD. These are for sale along with unique T-shirts and bags.

I also had the opportunity to walk around the entirety of the coffee shop. There are cases of horror memorabilia throughout to add to the overall experience and vibe of the place.

For anyone interested in events held at The Brewed, there is a special “Brewed Monster Movie Club,” you can sign up for free, exclusive alerts and

announcements to future movie screenings and events you won’t want to miss.

One thing that was also nice about visiting was the amount of street parking available. While it was standard, this was a less congested area of the city, so it made it easier to find a spot and park for free.

Near the coffee shop, you can also find a local bookstore, some food places, and a neighborhood to walk around if the weather allows.

You can find The Brewed at 2843 N Milwaukee Ave in Chicago, Illinois. On weekdays, they are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On weekends, they are open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

portable, I never really enjoyed taking it out. Even now, bringing my 3DS to campus felt far more natural.

In terms of its use as a home system, I think it lost some of the original Nintendo charm. I think part of it is Nintendo’s attempts to ditch the Wii branding after the massive failure of the Wii U. This rebrand has done well for them, but it doesn’t feel as “fun.”

I can admit the Switch is generally a better quality console and nostalgia makes the Wii systems seem nicer, but I think in terms if individuality the Wii line is undefeated. I still use both the Wii and Wii U occasionally and that feeling always sticks with me. Something else that has always bothered me about the Switch is that it is not a true hand

held. I touched on this briefly, but there’s a lack of convenience with the switch. Any DS is far more portable and comfortable to carry. The Switch provides greater updates to previous DS games, but the sacrifice in quality is just fine to me in comparison to actually getting that true handheld experience. I don’t think there’s any way to replicate that feeling in a home/handheld hybrid. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy the Switch as a console but that old vibe just isn’t there. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia blinding me, but I’d much rather pick up my 3DS above all else.

I’m sure in a few years Gen Alpha will feel a similar territorial nostalgia to the switch line. Regardless, I’ll always bet that the consoles I grew up with had a charm of their own that could never be replaced.

Blind Reads: The Suspenseful Masterpiece, “The Housemaid’s Secret”

**Spoilers ahead.

It can be difficult to find a book that is hard to put down.

Yet, I recently stumbled upon “The Housemaid’s Secret” by Freida McFadden, and found myself finishing the 352 pages in two days.

Despite how much I enjoyed the book, it isn’t one that I would have grabbed on my own. I actually bought it unknowingly.

There is an interesting thing called “blind date with a book” that can be found at certain libraries or bookstores. It’s where you choose a book only knowing the genre, as the entire thing is wrapped in paper and hidden.

I normally go for books of the thriller or horror genres. It can be difficult to choose one from so many options, so I grabbed a random wrapping labeled “thriller” and went on my way.

“The Housemaid’s Secret” follows protagonist Millie Calloway, a convicted felon, as she tries to make ends meet while finishing college. After being fired from her old job, she is desperate to find another one with her criminal record. Calloway is able to land a job working for Douglas Garrick, the wealthy husband with a wife who is claimed to be ill. Calloway is to mind her own business and keep up with the housework. What she does not know is that there is a greater plan heading into action, and Calloway plays the main role.

The novel is meant to be a sequel for “The Housemaid.” This worried me a little bit because I had not read this prior and wanted to start the book I had purchased.

One of the unique things about “The Housemaid’s Secret” is that it can stand alone as a novel, not requiring readers to seek the first or third books in the series. While a lot of readers online would recommend reading them in order, it is not required to be able to enjoy the story.

As I was getting into the book, there were a lot of things set up that did not quite make sense right away. This was not due to information a reader would need from a prior book, but there were certain parts that were mentioned repeatedly, but did not get explained until later on.

With this being said, everything that was happening was set up to fit quite perfectly.

There is a specific car with a license plate that Calloway memorizes and feels is following her around. She sees it often, and continues to have the feeling that she is being watched. The person doing the watching remains unknown, though she has her guesses. It ends up being none other than her ex-love interest, Enzo, who has come back from Italy to watch over Calloway and make sure she is safe. The two split after his move out of the states to care for his mother; Calloway was never given a time he would return and ended up trying to move on due to the uncertainty.

She has instead taken on a relationship with Brock, a wealthy aspiring lawyer who does not know anything about her past. Readers see the way Calloway holds off from letting Brock in, while she knew she could tell Enzo everything and he would be her biggest supporter.

The addition of Brock to the storyline was interesting to see because he did not seem to add anything at first.

Calloway would go on to end up being the prime suspect for the murder of her “boss,” after helping assist his wife Wendy, who claimed the relationship was abusive. Wendy would act the part: she did makeup for bruising,

left blood all over the bathroom, would lock herself in her room and never leave, and even threaten to take action herself with a gun.

As someone with a history of helping women out of these types of relationships, Calloway is vulnerable to Wendy’s actual plan: to frame her for the murder of her husband so that she can be rich and go off with her new lover. Calloway has never actually met the man who is supposed to be her boss. The entire time, it was Wendy’s actual lover. This man would go on to pretend to choke Wendy so that Calloway would shoot a gun to get him off.

While they made the scene look real and set a bunch of other evidence up throughout

Calloway’s employment, Calloway did not actually kill anyone because the gun did not actually shoot.

Going back to Brock being pointless, he agrees to meet Calloway at the police station as her lawyer, where the truth of her past comes out, inevitably leaving her.

Yet the only reason I see for him to be a part of the storyline is the pills he had left in Calloway’s apartment. These were the pills that would be used to kill Wendy later on by her new lover’s actual wife.

He could have served to prove Enzo was the right guy for Calloway the entire time, but I did not think Brock’s character was necessary.

The way this all came fullcircle in the end was incredible.

Readers get a part from Calloway’s perspective, then a part from Wendy’s perspective. For the terrible twists that happen, I went from rooting against Calloway to rooting for her. With all of her secrets and how she went about doing things, she was a hard character to like at first.

Overall, this was definitely a book I enjoyed reading; it was a unique, suspenseful thriller that kept me wanting more.

I would not only recommend this book to anyone who also enjoys reading thrillers, but I would recommend the idea of buying a book you do not know the name of upon purchasing. You never know what you might find.

Who Student Media Expects for “Avengers: Doomsday”

Following the mass announcement of the “Avengers: Doomsday” cast on March 26, a large anticipation grew within Saint Xavier’s Student Media crew. Here’s who we think will return for the film: My Picks: Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Anson Mount as Black Bolt

The last time Doctor Strange appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), he was summoned by Clea to face an incursion (a tear between two realities causing the destruction of both). It’s quite ironic that an incursion is now happening in the Sacred Timeline.

It would make perfect sense for Strange to return. He’s a prominent member of the Avengers, also rumored to be one of the new leaders of the team, alongside Captain America.

As Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige revealed the many teams which would take part in the battles against Doctor Doom, one was prominently missing: the Inhumans. The Inhumans are genetically engineered superheroes that haven’t been introduced yet to the main MCU timeline, although Black Bolt appeared in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

It would make sense to include the original Black Bolt, from the “Inhumans” series, along with the rest of that team. I mean, they were supposed to be a part of

the MCU. At this point, there’s many dark corners that haven’t been explored much that they can simply be thrown into.

DJ Jason’s Picks: Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher As they recently were reintroduced to the MCU, Daredevil and the Punisher have not appeared suited up on the bigscreen. DJ Jason Jimenez-Garrido believes it would be an incredible experience. “Perhaps they can have the street-level heroes fighting Doom’s army on Earth-616 while the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men team up against him in Battleworld,” Jimenez-Garrido theorized.

He also described that the banter between the characters is what makes them among his favorites. They are also characters considered to be in their own corner of the MCU, with littleto-no experience with the other heroes.

“Though it is pretty unlikely, I would love to see them show up in some capacity,” Jimenez-Garrido concluded.

Features Writer Grace’s Picks: Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight and Tom Holland as Spider-Man

One of the most beloved and criminally-underused characters in the MCU is Moon Knight.

“His series did well,” said Features Reporter, Grace Tynski. Even with the high viewing numbers, the character has only appeared in “What If…?” but as an alternate version.

Tynski went on to explain

that the character has yet to encounter any of the Avengers.

“It’s important for Avengers movies to tie loose ends of the MCU together, and bringing Moon Knight into the mix would be a good way to do that,” Tynski continued.

As for Spider-Man, Tynski mentioned that Spider-Man has many connections to the previous Avengers. However, she continued by mentioning that he would be in a rough spot due to his identity being erased from everyone’s minds. “It’d be interesting to see how that conflict would come off in how Spider-Man fights and handles battles,” she stated.

Previously, in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the character

nearly took a dark turn. He gave into his hate, and nearly killed Green Goblin. Although he was stopped, it’s possible that he will give into these feelings again.

Opinions Editor John’s

Picks: Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon

“Specifically with Star-Lord, since he’s on Earth at the end of the 3rd Guardians film,” Opinions

Editor John Street stated, “I think he’ll end up roped into whatever happens.” As the film ended, a message popped up saying that Star-Lord is set to return.

It would feel strange, though, seeing the former Guardians of the Galaxy team leader without a team to lead. “Maybe something

What Happened to True Movie Stars?

Since the beginning of Hollywood, there’s always been a select few actors and actresses that shine brighter than the rest. Movie stars, from Marilyn Monroe to Harrison Ford, shape Hollywood and attract audiences with little more than their name printed on the movie poster.

A movie star isn’t just a respected actor like Robert De Niro or Meryl Streep. It’s also not a promising up-and-comer like Glen Powell or Rachel Zegler.

A movie star is someone who’s at the peak of their fame or close to it. They’ve established themselves, but audiences aren’t bored of them. They’re talented, but also marketable to general audiences.

In the age of the internet and streaming services, movie stars aren’t quite as easy to come by. There are familiar faces, but who are the true movie stars of our generation? Are there any at all?

The issue is a nuanced one because people can’t seem to decide what they want from Hollywood.

When a much-anticipated movie is being cast, many people will complain that unknown actors never get a chance. Apparently, audiences want to see new actors get discovered. Yet these same audiences tend to complain about the lack of modern movie stars in Hollywood.

will happen with the Guardians, and they’ll call him back to Knowhere,” Street suggested. Meanwhile, Rocket Raccoon is the new leader of the Guardians team. Street mentioned that Rocket is one of his favorite characters in the MCU, but unfortunately, the film may not be ‘cosmic’ enough for the character. The massive amount of possibilities is quite exciting around the Campus Media Center (CMC). As the film releases on May 1, 2026, it will mark the beginning of graduation weekend for students such as myself. It’s exciting, especially since an “Avengers” film hasn’t been released in over five years.

A certain four films set to release in April 2028 stirred up this exact discourse. Director Sam Mendes announced his next endeavor: four separate biopics focusing on each member of The Beatles. Although there will be four films, each will have the same cast and intersecting plots.

The cast was later announced and so far consists of Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

All four actors are heartthrobs to a certain degree, but none of them overtly resemble their Beatles counterparts yet.

Many movie fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to complain about the casting choices.

Several people pointed out that Paul Mescal, for instance, still has the muscles and physique from his starring role in “Gladiator II.”

He’s a far cry from the slight build of Paul McCartney.

Most critiques came down to the theory that Hollywood casts the same recognizable faces regardless of how they fit the role. Unknown actors are usually harder to market to audiences, but now it seems that’s just who people are yearning for.

However, if unknown actors consistently secure all these large movie roles, how will any actor solidify themselves among the ranks of esteemed movie stars? To

be a movie star is to star in many movies, hence the name.

People complain of seeing the same faces in every movie, but it’s less of an issue than it’s made out to be. All four actors chosen for The Beatles biopics don’t actually have many films under their belts.

On X, these four actors may be familiar. In the real world, not many people know who they are. They aren’t household names, having mostly starred in indie films with a few exceptions.

Whether they’ll be right for the roles or not is yet to be seen, but they shouldn’t be disregarded immediately because of their popularity on select corners of the internet.

The internet makes it harder to gauge an actor’s actual popularity. Just because I see Drew Starkey edits with millions of views on TikTok doesn’t mean he’s anywhere near the popularity of someone like Timothée Chalamet.

Speaking of Timothée Chalamet, he’s one of the strongest contenders for the title of this generation’s movie star. He’s a respected actor, having starred in seven Best Picture nominations and been nominated for Best Actor twice already. He’s especially liked by younger audiences as well. His range of roles is also impressive. From starring in the scifi blockbuster, “Dune,” to playing Willy Wonka and Bob Dylan, Chalamet caters to all different demographics of moviegoers.

It’s not hard to believe that in twenty years, we’ll look back and recognize Chalamet as a hallmark of this era of Hollywood.

For actresses, the strongest contenders are probably Zendaya and Margot Robbie. Both have dominated the box-office in movies like “Dune” and “Barbie” respectively.

Margot Robbie, in particular, has solidified her place in Hollywood among the greats. She’s worked with two of the most lauded directors of all time, Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. She’s also a talented producer and prioritizes women’s stories in films like “Barbie,” “Promising Young Woman,” and “Birds of Prey.”

Although these actors are a level above their peers, it’s hard to say whether they’ve reached the stardom of the movie stars of old.

To complicate matters further, it’s also important to look back on

who Hollywood tends to market and popularize. In past decades, the most popular movie stars have a few things in common.

Old Hollywood was overwhelmingly white, straight, and conventionally attractive. Of course, there were talented people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community hard at work, but they weren’t the names on marquee signs or printed in the tabloids.

As Hollywood evolves, so does the definition of a movie star. Hopefully, we’ve grown past the discriminatory criteria required to get into the club.

A movie star should be someone talented, charming, and committed to the craft of filmmaking. That craft, after all, should transcend any perception of status or fame. That dedication is what makes someone truly worth watching.

inZOI Early Access Review: Should You Play It Now or Wait?

As someone who loves a good life simulator game, I couldn’t stop myself from checking out the new release in the genre, inZOI.

If you’re like me and a fan of life sims like The Sims, there are always new features we just can’t wait to try.

For me, it’s things like creating the perfect character, decorating my houses, or even just watching my characters get into the kind of situations I’d never find myself in ever. There’s something about games like this that feels a bit real.

So, when I heard that the game had these features, that’s when I made the decision that I was going to purchase inZOI as soon as it was released on Steam.

The question that I’ve been seeing everyone asking lately is whether it’s worth playing now, or if they should wait until it’s fully released.

For anyone who hasn’t heard of it, inZOI is a new life simulation game released on March 27, 2025, developed by inZOI Studio and published by KRAFTON.

So, in this review, I will go over what I enjoyed, what I think needs improvement, and whether or not I think it’s worth buying during Early Access.

The moment I opened inZOI, I was welcomed by a super cute introduction video. Honestly, one of the reasons I was so excited to try it was because of the graphics; it just looked so realistic. That alone was enough to get me.

When I used to play The Sims,

I was always downloading custom content (or “CC”) to make things look more real. If you’ve played, you might have heard of “alpha CC.” That’s the kind of file that makes the characters look super detailed and realistic. It took a lot of time to get all of my CC, but it made the game feel way more fun. With inZOI, I didn’t have to do any of that. The realistic look is already built in, which honestly surprised me. The graphics are so sharp, and the details on the characters are really good. The best part for me was the character creation. It’s super detailed and fun to spend your time on. You get two options, basic editing and detailed editing, where you can make your character look exactly like you or even like a celebrity, which I’ve seen people do. You can also start with a character that’s already been designed and customize everything from the face, body, outfits, accessories, and even a new feature I’ve never seen in a life sim before, Craft. I love this option because it’s creative. You can make your own outfits and accessories, which is different. You don’t even need mods or outside custom content. They also have a feature called Canvas in the game, where inZOI players get to share their designs and characters with other players. This has got to be one of the best features for me.

There’s also a feature for people who don’t feel like working, they added money cheats. As someone who always uses them in

The Sims, I loved how easy it was to access here. You don’t have to type in commands; you just go to the Help section, click on it, and you get some extra money.

Decorating is another thing I love. Once I start, I can spend more than two hours decorating my house. To be honest, I’m more into decorating than building.

Building feels like too much work, so I usually pick an apartment, delete everything, and redesign it exactly how I want it.

Another thing that I enjoy about this game is watching my character go about their daily life. This is exactly where the job system really shows its strength.

I’ve been an assistant, a trainee firefighter, and a few other jobs in between. The fact that I get to see my character involved in these jobs brings the game to life in such a vivid way.

Customization is also all over the game, as well. You can change the animals, tree colors, billboards, and even the weather. This really brings the game to life. However, while I think there are many good things, there are definitely some areas that need improvement.

One thing that I had a problem with was the game’s performance. First, after creating my character, I went into the game and everything kind of changed.

The graphics started to look grainy whenever I moved the camera around. It wasn’t sharp anymore.

My computer usually can handle high graphics settings, but with inZOI, I had to lower the settings.

Also, I do think the game can feel a little void at times. I have noticed that other players have

said the same thing. In my case, I spend so much time designing my characters and decorating that I don’t really feel that emptiness that much. But if you enjoy the game for gameplay alone, you may feel it too.

Overall, this game seems great, and it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re a fan of life simulation games. I bought it during Early Access because it was cheaper. If you’re deciding whether to buy it, its low price could be a factor since it is lower than what it will be once it’s fully released. As the game also continues to grow and new features are added by the developers, I’m sure there will be many different opinions. I, however, like the direction that the game is going in.

One day, I was laying on my bed scrolling through Instagram, and came across this video of someone singing. The music entered. It was the instrumental of That’s What I Like by Bruno Mars then the vocals followed. When I heard the first words I was confused. I didn’t know if I should laugh, be amazed by the singing talent, or in deep thought. It was someone remastering the lyrics to that song with lyrics about how great LeBron James is.

We all know in sports that there are people titled the greatest of all time. For football it’s Tom Brady, for hockey it’s Wayne Gretzky, but it will forever be a Jordan versus James debate for basketball. When I hear the greatest of all time, I think of someone who has accolades, accomplished great feats, and done things that no one else has done. There’s always been a select few of people that have done these things, but what happens when there’s so many people who have done such similar things. One thing I’ve found so interesting about the Jordan and James debate is that no one talked about Kobe Bryant. Maybe I’m a delusional casual when I say this, but not putting Bryant in the debate is crazy. As far as rings go, Jordan has six rings and James has four, but Bryant has five. Even so,

I’ve heard some people say he isn’t on that tier, which I think is crazy.

Another thing that I find even more interesting about this debate is that both Bryant and Jordan three-peated. I’d say a three-peat is pretty convincing in a greatest of all time debate. I bet some people reading this are probably punching the air, and probably thinking that I don’t know basketball. In reality, I’m just going off the facts and it is what it is.

I bet I’m enraging the mob of LeBron fans, so let me even the playing field. In terms of accolades James has too many to count on one hand, but I’ll point out the important ones. As long as the NBA has been around, having the most points in NBA history is nothing shy of amazing.

James with four NBA Finals Championships has four Finals MVPs, which is insane. Being on one of the biggest stages of them all and being named the most valuable player every time you appeared is crazy. Other notable accomplishments James has is the all-time leader in assists, a Rookie of the Year Award, and a sixtime Defensive Player of the Year Award.

James has also done one thing that has never been pulled off before in NBA history, which is pulling off a 3-1 comeback in the NBA Finals in 2016. This moment is probably the most iconic moment in NBA history.

The infamous “Blocked by James!” came from this game, as well as the “Cleveland, this is for you!” also came from this game.

How could you ever forget about the frame of James trying to usher J.R. Smith went away from the rim after grabbing a rebound off a missed free throw. I remember being 12 years old and watching this go down, definitely one of the best basketball moments I’ve witnessed. I remember coming to school, months after this game, and people were still talking about it. That 2016 team had a great team overall. Having James and Kyrie Erving is already crazy.

James can play just about any position there’s not a whole lot of players who can do that. On top of Erving’s ball handling and scoring made that team so lethal. One thing people say about Jordan, Bryant, and James is that they never had help. Bryant was teamed with arguably the best center in NBA history in Shaquille O’Neal. That duo has one of the most iconic highlight tapes in sports history.

At that point, you might as well have had them two on the court because they were so dominant. Jordan had Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen which was one of the most versatile trio in NBA history. Being able to score, defend, and spread the rock all in one team is crazy. No

team could possibly be made that versatile in just three people. In all, the term greatest of all time is subjective. People who say Jordan or Kobe are the greatest of all time are usually from older generations, and those who argue James are usually younger unless you’re Shannon Sharpe. If you ask me who’s the greatest of all time. I’m going with my guy Luka Doncic. High fly, sky dive, gold mine, Lakers in 5.

The Cougars made it to the outdoor portion of the season and things are off to a great start. We’ve seen players hit new personal records (PR), NAIA standards, claim weekly awards, and cruise past competition.

The main leaders of the Cougar dominance came from senior sprinter/hurdler Lendale Franklin, and senior thrower Ayobami Arokoyo.

Franklin earned CCAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, making this his second time claiming the award this season, and his fourth overall award combining both indoor and outdoor honors.

Arokoyo earned CCAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, making this sixth time overall claiming the award as he claimed the honor both in Outdoor and Indoor.

SXU Men’s Track and Field vs. St. Louis University (Mo.)

Bilikins Invitational: 2nd of 2091 points

The Cougars made sure to come out strong in their outdoor season debut, earning a total of 91 points at the Invitational which earned them second place out of the 20 teams competing. This is the second time in team history where the Cougars placed second at a meet.

The 91 points are the third most accumulated points by the Cougars at any meet. With the first two being their best, a total of 106 points at the CCAC Outdoor Championships in 2014, and their team record 123.5 points at the CCAC Championships in 2023.

Franklin’s performance at the Bilikins Invitational is the reason for him claiming the weekly awards. He achieved a lot at this meet as he broke his own school record in the 100m Dash, placing first with a time of 10.68 seconds.

Franklin became the first Cougar to win this event since former standout John Stancato did so in the CCAC Championships and the Ted Hayden Invite in April 2013 and 2014. Franklin also hit the NAIA ‘B’ Standard in the 110m Hurdles, placing second in the event with a time of 14.32 seconds breaking his own program record.

Arokoyo hit the NAIA ‘A’ Standard in Discus as he posted his third-best throw with a throw of 54.23m. He placed first winning the event, making it the 13th time in Arokoyo’s career where he has won the Discus event.

He also took part in the Shot Put event where he placed at fourth with a throw of 15.39m, which is his sixth-best career mark.

During the 200m Dash, junior sprinter Sean Harris hit the NAIA ‘B’ Standard when he clocked in a time of 21.17 seconds. Harris also set an SXU record with this time.

Sophomore

Moore set a new PR in the 200m Dash with a time of 22.63 seconds.

Moore also took over in the 100m Dash, setting another PR in this event by finishing with a time of 11.13 seconds. Placing him at 11th place.

At the Hurdles event, junior Karam Jaber performed well in the 400m Hurdles. Jaber established a new PR with a time of 55.15 seconds, placing third in the event. Jaber broke the record that was set by former standout Chris Spencer back in 2010.

Senior jumper Ronnie Foster took part in the Triple Jump event and broke his own program record. Foster placed second overall when he jumped with a distance of 14.51m.

Sophomore jumper Faruq Sulaimon also competed in the Triple Jump, setting a new PR with a distance of 12.08m. Barely getting over the edge with this PR by 0.01, with his last best being a distance of 12.07m.

SXU Men’s Track and Field vs. Chicagoland Championships: No Team Score

The Cougars did it again and took over the meet. We saw the guys win up to four different events at the Chicagoland Championships which was hosted by Elmhurst University (Ill.).

Arokoyo continued to sweep the competition at the Discus event making a throw of 52.22m, making him the only thrower to surpass the 50.00m mark at the meet. This also makes it Arokoyo’s 14th time in his career where he

won the Discus event.

Franklin also had a good weekend as he posted the thirdfastest time of his career and in program history in the 110m Hurdles preliminaries. Franklin posted a time of 14.36 seconds, proceeding to claim first place in the finals with a time of 14.63 seconds.

Franklin wasn’t done here, as he took part in the 4x100 Relay Team that won the event with a time of 41.85 seconds. He joined Harris, junior sprinter Ryan McFadden, and sophomore sprinter Jamaurien Thomas as they recorded the fourth best time in team history, and gave SXU their fourth win in the meet.

Foster takes credit for one of SXU’s victories of the weekend as he won the Triple Jump with a distance of 14.66m. Foster broke his school record with this distance and also proceeded to hit the NAIA ‘B’ Standard.

Harris made a new PR in the 100m Dash preliminaries with a time of 10.97 seconds, qualifying for the finals and posting a time of 11.03 seconds.

Senior distance runner Isaac Sytsma made his outdoor season debut in the 1500m, finishing with his third-best career time of 4:08.32 minutes.
