President’s Message

I am honored and humbled to be elected as your next President. In the 48-year history of

the ASID TX Chapter, I am the first Allied Member and first African American to become President, reflecting your commitment to growth and inclusion for our chapter. It is with

great pleasure that I accept this position, and I look forward to serving you all with utmost

dedication and compassion. I am grateful for the warm congratulatory praises and support I have received from industry professionals at all levels. Thank you.

My goal is to continue improving the values and initiatives of ASID by informing the general

public about health, safety, and welfare and demonstrating why “Finding a Pro” through ASID is worth the investment. I also hope

to remind existing and prospective members about the incredible benefits and resources ASID offers that make it the leading

organization it is. From retirement plans, health and liability insurance, contracts, and CEUs to social events, advocacy, small

business solutions, and networking, these benefits make us a thriving community.

We are seeking enthusiastic and engaged members who are eager to be active participants in the change they wish to see. We

invite you to share your accomplishments with us, join us at events, and become involved in your local design communities. Our

organization is always on the lookout for individuals who are committed to the growth of their chapters and its members, both

at the local and state level. I look forward to visiting many of you at upcoming events in your respective cities.

We heard your requests and are answering the charge to serve you better. Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force is a

valuable resource for ALL members, not just a minority group, providing support and guidance on the many disparities we face as a human race. Our Texas Chapter membership is made up of just 9 percent minorities, 23 percent from the LGBTQ+ community,

and more than 66% who are seasoned in age and/or disabled. We need to welcome representatives from all of these diverse

communities to help develop programming that promotes awareness, education, and actionable solutions, as well as enhance the community environment and continually improve.

Stay tuned for updates on new resources that will improve equity for our diverse membership, support for our aging and disabled

designers, visibility for our IPs and members, scholarships for students, and mentorship for Emerging Professionals. Expect more

programming on aging-in-place, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), sustainability, commercial design, small business solutions, and how our chapter office will support you daily, as well as more social events in all Design Communities to build camaraderie.

As I step into this new role, I am excited to expound on the legacy of ASID and continue serving as a design colleague and friend

to all of you. I am committed to upholding the values and mission of ASID and working toward the betterment of our community. Let’s make this year a great one.

I look forward to seeing you in action, being the change you want to see, and working to show how design truly impacts lives! Sincerely, Veronica Sanders, Allied ASID

of wonderful showrooms, many of which are ASID Industry Partners.

Several volunteer leaders are working on the office’s design and securing vendor donations. The space is a work in progress, but in the coming year, we

anticipate holding more meetings and events in the office and look forward to spotlighting our Chapter Gold Sponsors on a rotating basis. As the finish-out

progresses, ASID members will be welcome to drop in to charge devices, do a little work, and maybe even hold small vendor or client meetings. New physical address (use for UPS, DHL & FedEx shipments):

Attention Industry Partners: For 2023 we listened to feedback from you and consolidated our Design Community sponsorships and Chapter event sponsorships into one comprehensive ASID Texas Chapter Sponsorships Package. What did this “One Ask, One Give” concept mean to you? Your company only needed to pay once for the year, and you received coverage across the entire Chapter, not just in one Design Community. The 2023 sponsorships package was a huge hit; therefore, based on even more input, we have made a few valuable tweaks to improve the offerings and now have available our 2024 ASID Texas Chapter Sponsorships Package! Plan on enhancing your ASID Industry Partner membership with one of our 2024 ASID Texas Chapter Sponsorships! Visit tx.asid.org/chapter-sponsorships to learn more and sign up.

Celebrating Design Texas: Education, Expo & Awards Brings Together 400+ Design Industry Members Wednesday, August 2 through Friday, August 4, 2023, over 400 design professionals, students, and industry members from across the state and beyond gathered in Dallas at our ASID Texas Chapter Conference, Celebrating Design Texas: Education, Expo & Awards (CDT). Attendees came together to learn, source, socialize, and recognize the design achievements and volunteer spirit of the talented members of our beloved interior design industry. Though much of this year's event, which was only CDT's third, again took place on the campus of 2023 Chapter Diamond Sponsor Dallas Market Center (DMC), the volunteer organizers changed things up a bit.

Emily Calorino Sipe (left) of ASID Industry Partner & Exhibitor DUCHATEAU met designer Tania Vazquez & architect Juan Leon (both first-time CDT conference goers) of Stuhle Home Interiors in New Braunfels at our Opening Night Party hosted by Visual Comfort & Co.

ASID Texas Membership Director Nichelle Hosley, Allied of San Antonio (center), and designer Ariel Merk, Allied ASID of McKinney (left), thanked Sandra Kimble of Visual Comfort & Co. and her team for helping us kick off our annual conference in their dazzling showroom.

Edyie Tindell and Troy Lyons show off the latest offerings by ASID Industry Partner Vadara Quartz to designer and CDT23 Award winner Faye Nielsen, Allied ASID of Irving.

Michael Yates (with microphone) and Bryan Yates, Allied ASID, of Yates Desygn (Dallas), gave one of four 30-minute Pop-Up Talks. They shared their personal experiences of building a network of clients, vendors, and other design professionals that has helped their business grow. - 8 - ISSUE 4 I 2023 | ASID TEXAS CHAPTER

We still offered: • Fourteen hours of IDCEC-approved HSW CEUs on a variety of timely subjects. • A vendor showcase featuring new residential and commercial offerings. • An interactive networking happy hour. • DMC Campus Tours for Students and Emerging Professionals. • An Expo Bingo game to help connect designers and vendors. Congratulations to interior designer Juana Rodriguez of Studio B Design Group in Fort Worth, a graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, who won a $100 Visa gift card! However, we also made the following changes and additions: • The Expo & Education portions of the conference moved from the DMC Trade Mart to the 10th Floor of the DMC World Trade Center, providing a more open and flexible environment with access to daylight from the building's atrium. • Our 34 Exhibitors – 20 of whom had never before exhibited at CDT – enjoyed a more formal booth structure with 8' high white partitions delineating each vendor's space. • We flew in Mark Bonnett, Founder and President of the CorePath Companies, to talk about ASID's new Retirement Program, as well as offer a CEU on setting business goals to both grow your design firm and support the life you want to live. • Anyone was able to take advantage of four different informative 30-minute Pop-Up Talks – which took place in the middle of the Expo floor – focusing on business, marketing, networking, and creativity. • Students engaged in an intimate, conversational session with two experienced interior designers – 20232024 ASID Texas President-Elect Adrian Galvan, Allied ASID (San Antonio) and 2022-2024 ASID Texas AtLarge Director Jessica Janzen, ASID (Dallas) – to explore different career options in both residential and commercial interiors. • Designers, Educators, and Students were treated to a delicious complimentary lunch on both full days of the conference in the bountiful showrooms of 2023 Chapter Silver Sponsor Designer's Patio (Thursday) and Uttermost/Revelation/The Buhmann Group (Friday). • After a day of Expo set-up on Wednesday, we kicked off the conference that evening with a fun and refreshing Opening Night Party hosted in the sparkling showroom of Visual Comfort & Co. • Not only did 2023 Chapter Silver Sponsor Feizy Rugs treat us to a lively Happy Hour on Thursday evening in their beautiful showroom and gave away several generous gift cards, but they also provided nine large rugs to accentuate and enhance different areas of our Expo floor. • Finally, we held our festive Friday evening Awards Gala in the historic Crozier Hall in downtown Dallas, a newly available event venue. The vibe was a little more formal than the past two years, but the funky industrial scene lent itself to lots of revelry. At the Awards Gala, we: • Celebrated the talented winners of the 2023 Celebrating Design Texas Awards, the annual design competition recognizing the finest interior design achievements within the ASID Texas Chapter. See Design Texas magazine Issue 3, 2023, for a complete list. • Honored the deserving recipients of the 2023 Texas Chapter Member Awards for volunteerism. (See page 11 for details.) • Recognized the beneficiaries of the 2023 President's Awards bestowed by 2022-2023 ASID Texas Chapter President Kathryn Nelson, ASID. (See page 12 for details.)

Winners of the 2023 Texas Chapter Member Awards Announced The ASID Texas Chapter Member Awards recognize those who have provided exemplary volunteer service to the chapter. Each award is named after an individual who has exuded the characteristics everyone should admire and strive to emulate. They both left a legacy behind, setting the bar for us all to reach for in our dedication to the interior design industry through the Texas Chapter of ASID.

On the evening of Friday, August 4, 2023, during the ASID Texas Chapter Celebrating Design Texas Awards Gala, the following members were recognized for their service to the chapter by winning the 2023 Texas Chapter Member Awards: THE KATHY HAMMOND INDUSTRY PARTNER AWARD Kathy Hammond was praised for her commitment to professionalism, keen sense of style, and eagerness to support the community. She consistently stepped up to the plate, always willing and eager to contribute where needed. This award is for an Industry Partner Representative who has continually and enthusiastically supported the Texas Chapter by contributing time, energy, materials, and resources. Amy Mints, ASID Industry Partner Representative with Interior & Textile Solutions (Fort Worth) | As the Fort Worth Design Community Chair, active Industry Partner, past booth volunteer for Dallas Build Expo, past chapter Industry Partner Liaison, and a champion of supporting the Texas Chapter as a whole, Amy's dedication and determination for the future of Fort Worth and that of the Texas Chapter as a whole should be celebrated. She took over the Fort Worth Design Community Chair role mid-season and will continue to step up and lead into the following Leadership Year 2023-2024. THE ROBERT PRESTON HENRY PRACTITIONER AWARDS Serving as ASID Texas Chapter president from 1993-1994, Robert Preston Henry actively promoted the profession he loved so much through a vibrant career spanning 60 years of dedication. He cultivated a love for interior design and was devoted to ASID. Practitioners nominated for one of these three awards radiate the same vibrant eagerness to support the chapter through volunteerism and commitment to peers, events, and the chapter as a whole. On the Rise Legacy Award This individual is still immersed in their interior design studies while plugged in and eager to volunteer time and energy at the student level, encouraging peers and fellow members alike to further advance the interior design profession, the chapter, and ASID. Michele Traylor, Student ASID (Dallas) | Michele was nominated by her supportive instructor and future Texas Chapter President, Veronica Sanders, Allied ASID, for this role. She accepted, stepped up, attended one-on-one training with Laura McDonald Stewart, FASID, on a weekend, and has taken on the Texas Chapter Magazine Chair position as a

student in her senior year! She has helped keep us on schedule by contacting contacts and our publishers with deadline reminders and follow-up correspondence. Michele has been an active participant in local events for the Dallas Design Community and has attended all of the Emerging Professional events to date. We would like to celebrate her contributions to the Texas Chapter as a whole for her many hours of help with Design Texas Magazine and our attendance in almost all of the board meetings/conference calls. Emerging Legacy Award This practitioner is relatively new to ASID but supports the chapter with lots of time and energy, all with a fresh outlook and positive attitude. Brittany Rice, Allied ASID (Lubbock) & Paije Holliman, Allied ASID (Lubbock) | As the West Texas Design Community Chair and Financial Chairs, respectively, for this 2022-2023 Leadership Year, both Brittany and Paije have been passionate about reviving the newly re-established design community. This year, they have been focusing on getting trained, learning the ins and outs of the board, bylaws, Texas Chapter policies and procedures, and have big ideas for the future of Lubbock and the surrounding areas. We cannot wait to see what they do and know they have a bright future ahead within the Texas Chapter! Longevity Legacy Award This individual has graced the ASID Texas Chapter with support, time, and energy for six or more years of consecutive membership. Corey Davey, ASID, RID (Dallas) | Having graced the Texas Chapter with his support, time, and energy since being the Student Representative to the Board, Corey has worn many hats for ASID, including in multiple national roles. As an active Chapter Support Team member for ASID nationally, he also stepped up to continue on the chapter's NCIDQ Exam Prep Chair and Student Symposium Chair. Having successfully fulfilled our five required seats with eight future exam takers, he exceeded our expectations. This year's Real World Design Week and return to the concept of mentoring was received with rave reviews by student attendees, and the Texas Chapter plans to continue with this format for many years to come.
