Benjy’s

Beyond... Houston, TX

2424 Dunstan Road

Benjy’s has 15 years of service under their belt and continues to hold the title of best Sunday Brunch in Houston. Texans like things spicy and the bartenders at Benjy’s do an excellent job whipping up cocktails with a kick. A great complement to brunch is the Coriander and Habbanero Bloody Mary as well as the Spice treat containing rum, agave nectar, lime, soda water and jalapenos. As for the food, don’t get carried away with the plate of muffins and breads that arrive first, the lump crab tacos will be worth saving room for. The way to go for dessert is refreshing sorbet served with cookies and the hip lounge attached to the Rice Village location provides your after hours Benjy’s fix!

Opening a cupcake shop near a University is smart business especially if you have good product. Great presentation mixed with artfully swirled creamy frosting will make you want to sample each and every flavor combination. Celebrity Cupcakes, located near Rice University opened earlier this year, creating some competition for other Houston based shops catering to cupcakes. Only complaint is the service was less than warm for something so sweet!

Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen

12637 Westheimer Road

Contents, 249 West 19th Street

It’s really a toss up of who has the best or where you should go for Mexican food in Texas. With endless options it comes down to a matter of preference but if your looking for a good enchilada you can’t go wrong with Sylvia’s. Nestled in the corner of a shopping center on Westheimer Road, the robust sauces top a filled tortilla with ingredients ranging from chicken to crabmeat. The ambience of Sylvia’s will remind you of a neighborhood taqueria. If you live for variety the enchilada platters will definitely have something to your liking, with a north and south version. The North platter is more tex-mex inspired where as the south, picks up more traditional Mexican flavors. To clear things up, there are other menu item’s besides enchiladas but Sylvia has really perfected this one. THE WRITE TRACK

A Note from

LCG ...

This is our first issue dedicated to food! I didn’t grow up in a household with a master chef, but I did have two parents that cooked well. Home cooked meals are something that I advocate, not just for nutritional purposes, but a way to save money and for family and people to enjoy conversation over some commonality...food! With that said, there is something that still remains alluring about dining out! Discovering new dishes and ingredients is inspirational for me, seeing as though I am always looking to expand my culinary exposure. Restaurants in Atlanta are a little different than what I experienced growing up in an East Coast city. There is quantity, but seemingly a lot of the same. For this issue, I decided to showcase some of the cities delights, giving you some suggestions of places to enjoy over the Labor Day Holiday and making you aware of some recent openings. On the musical side of life, I couldn’t leave you out in the cold, so make sure you check out “A Party with Mike Phillips” and pick up the new album M.P.3. There is always our musical podcast “You’re On The Write Track”, Episodes 1-5 are available on podomatic.com If you are visiting Atlanta, stop by The Botanical Gardens and see their herb wall, which also serves as the backdrop for this page! In the next edition we’ll be back to our normal flow, including the next Editions Showcase. If there is anything that you would like to see in an upcoming edition, feel free to contact me at thewritetracklcg@gmail.com. See you after the holiday! LCG
