European music is special. What makes it special? Maybe because of the sounds are different. Rarely do you hear music that is exactly the same or a part of a growing trend. Sure the music genres maybe categorized that way but for the most part, the artist compete with one another to be different.

Most people don’t realize that RnB exist outside of the conventional countries such as England and America. We found a unique and “relevant” story of someone that is not only taking the music culture in Germany by storm, but also on the verge of conquering the world with smooth, harmonic, well produced songs. And of course a touch of beauty!- And she sings in German.

We caught up with the sensual singer in October 2013 and on the eve of her highly anticipated that is currently riding high in the German charts with the single “Venus & Mars” , took the time out to explain the process in creating a blend of international sound in a normally corned market within Deutschland.

WJ: The latest record. Why an E.P? Rola: We had the idea to shoot a live performance of two songs to give a small impression of what i have been working on. After shooting the two videos we decided to release these live versions of the songs as a little E.P. WJ: We know that you sing in German and have a remarkable voice but do you think it limits yourself in regards to reaching a worldwide audience?

Rola: Even if I hate limits, singing with German lyrics sets the limit that people out of Germany don’t understand them. Since I always listened

to a lot of English music, I’m very influenced by it but I decided very early to sing and write in the language I speak. At one side I can go deeper with the lyrics and German is also a very poetic language but at the other side German words sounds very sharp and its harder to get them smooth on a song than with English words. Anyway I always wanted to represent German music as a German artist with German lyrics but with an international influence and feeling. I would love to reach a worldwide audience, and why not with this kind of music.

And this is what I’m doing now. I can also imagine having a project in English in the future.

WJ: You know other artist or bands from Germany that sings in German have reached to world wide audiences but they also were more of a stage act with pyro technics e such as Ramstein for example. To do it within the R&B world would be quite unique and interesting.

Is there anything special that compliments the music other than the remarkable voice that you think would draw people to your music?

RnB and soulful music is hard to find in Germany and nowadays I would rather say its “pop” music is what I do. Every song I sing and write is everything that I am and I feel like every aspect is important. I want to touch the people with the lyrics, the melodies, the instruments and of course the sound of my own voice.

WJ: Who does your styling? You seem to stand above the rest when it comes to your dress sense. Is that on purpose or was that part of the plan / marketing strategy to compliment the amazing music ?

First of all thank you very much = ). I do my styling by myself. I just love playing around with looks, hairstyles and make up. It’s so much fun but that’s just me. I have always got bored very fast and always tried something new. It depends on how I feel...that’s how I dress and style myself.

WJ: On the EP ( which is really good by the way ), what’s with the song “ Punkt Erreicht” ?

The EP is a really small preview of what we are working on. “ Punkt Erreicht” was the first song I wrote for myself as a solo artist. It’s a broken love story and it basically says “the time has come for us to go seperate ways or to move on but even though I still love you! “ WJ: Where will you go from here ?

I want to release my album and that’s where I am now. I don’t know where it will take me. I just want to sing and be heard. I want to share what I love, Music.

WJ: First off how is your Russian?

Zoi: So my Russian is not so good. I only know the basic phrases like “how are you?” The truth is, I didn’t try so hard to learn cause almost everybody on my team speaks English and my coach is Greek as well. But I think I’m going to start Russian lessons since my hometown in Greece (Thessaloniki) has really good relations with Russia and there are a lot of Russians that come for vacation or business.

WJ: And how are you adjusting to the weather? (It has to be a huge difference than to France and of course Thessaloniki) Zoi: It is different than France and Turkey and absolutely different than Greece! Even though I’m Greek and used to warm weather, I’ve traveled a lot. (Small pause) Plus I’m a Gemini, which means I can adjust easy to new places and conditions! ha-ha WJ: Prior to last season in Turkey, you played 4 years in France. What road did you take to be signed to Nadezha?

Zoi: I started my career outside of Greece it started in France with Aix En Provence. The next year I played for Charleville -Mezieres. After I got signed to the number one team in France (Bourges), my first Euro league team. Later on I played for Kayseri in Turkey, and we reached the finals of Eurocup! You see I made a bet with my self that every year I will go one step ahead! So that’s why this year you find me playing in Russia for Nadezhda Orenburg!

WJ: The Euro league is the top league in Europe and supposedly second in the world, but compared to the previous teams you played on it must be an adjustment. How are you adjusting to a new role on Nadezha?

Zoi: Playing for a team as Nadezhda, I had to make adjustments. But I’m getting there. For example I had to adjust that sometimes I might play 30 minutes in a game, other times I will play 16minutes.You need to change the way you see things and when you are not used to it takes time. But if you want to play for a different higher-level team you need to do different things than you were doing before. This is how it is! It’s a big challenge for me especially in my mind and psychology, but I was never a quitter. A Greek proverb says. “Whoever is persistent always win!”

WJ: What is your weekly routine schedule (training regime, diet, preparation for games)?

How tough can the scheduling can be and how do you prepare yourself mentally for Euro games and the domestic games as well?

Zoi: My weekly routine changes depending on the games, if we play home or away. During the first round, which just finished last night with a win, we had a lot of away games. So when we play Euro league games and a league game away on the same week, I’m absent from home for a week. Traveling is really tough here. The average travel time for one way is 12hours.That means that we don’t have time to come home in the middle. While we are away we have one practice per day, video sessions, the game and then go to our next stop. On the other hand when we are at home we have 2 practices per day.

I try to eat healthy and that is a better feat than when I’m home. I know how to cook few things, but the truth is it’s not fun to cook for one person, so I just have it delivered to me from a restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine WJ: How do you feel about player marketing? Where are you with the modeling career?

There was a time in my life when I was 18years old, and I was really interested in modeling.

I started booking a few jobs but soon I realized that modeling wasn’t for me. Coming from a sports family, my father was a basketball player and my mother was a swimming star, so I was totally coming from a different world. I don’t regret my experience with modeling. Sometimes you need to experience other things to really appreciate what you have! And i would never change what i have! I’m really thankful for my family. My parents never stopped me; instead they let me see for myself! They trusted me and that’s true love!

It usually starts with a few friends hanging out at my house on a fairly average Southern California evening. The autumn here does not really change the colors of the scenery like it does in other places where there are proper seasons; it just gets a little darker, windier, and cooler. You can smell the wood burning in fireplaces, and you can smell the trees. The darkness comes earlier and surrounds you.

I have had a reoccurring nightmare since I was a teenager. A few noises outside the house let us know that something is not right. The dog barks at something aggressively, and following that is a frightened, high-pitched yelp followed by silence. Just as we get up to check on the dog in the backyard, we hear a more frightening sound of someone banging on the door to the backyard, scratching at the window, and a raspy voice moaning, something incomprehensible, almost a deep drone.

I go to my room and grab my Mossberg 930 (a 12 gauge pistol grip). The pistol grip can make this shotgun illegal in California, and will get you a felony conviction if it also has a collapsible stock. Gun laws make no sense while I am dreaming.

We go towards the rear of the house from where the noise is coming and while walking towards the door, I hear a crash. Something breaks through the window behind me and grabs my friend, pulling him partially through by his left arm. At this point I catch a glimpse of the cause of the earlier noise, which was probably responsible for snuffing the life out my dog. It is zombies again and I realize that I am in the same nightmare, which I have had many times over, and it is not going to end well.

This was just a dream!

The point of the story is, like many Americans, I have fears. I have fears of our government doing things behind closed doors. I am afraid of the viruses they play with for biological weapons. I am afraid of homeland security amassing stockpiles of weapons, ammunition, and military vehicles for use on the civilian population. I am afraid of our drone war, and the use of these drones to kill American civilians ordered by our president. Growing up in Los Angeles in the 90s left a few images from the LA riots burned into my mind. I have a vivid imagination, and these things are very unsettling for me.

So this October, in celebration of Halloween and all things dark and macabre, I began thinking what I would do if there were some kind of zombiepocalypse, or large-scale urban unrest and rioting. What would I want to stockpile in case of a major vascular or extremity injury that I could use to keep my friends or myself alive a few hours until I could get them to a hospital? We all read and view horror stories on the news these days of mass shootings within America, at our workplace or sadly but true the schoolyards, and now in the suburbs.

I have made a top ten list of the things that would be useful to buy some time. These things could just as easily be used in a wilderness setting, if you have seen 127 hours with James Franco, you will know what I am referring to.

1. A tourniquet Initially used during Roman times around 500 B.C., these devices are incredibly useful to control bleeding from an amputation. If one is not available, a makeshift tourniquet can be fashioned out of a strip of cloth with a stick to twist it tighter, or a belt.

2. Intra-osseus vascular access kit recent literature has shown that the most rapid, trouble-free way to start an IV (intravenous access) is punching a needle directly into your bone, usually into the top of your tibia, just below the knee in your shin. This is placed using a hand-operated drill that comes with the kit.

3. 2 liters of lactated ringers solution the best way to control shock and blood loss initially is to stop the bleeding and then give fluids to restore the blood volume that has been lost. After gaining IV access with your intra-osseus IV kit, give 2 liters of this fluid 4. A trauma dressing with quick clot In case of a major wound, advances in technology have resulted in the production of a gauze dressing impregnated with kaolin that activates your blood’s own intrinsic clotting pathway by activating factor XII leading to a fibrin clot and hopefully stopping the bleeding.

5. Trauma shears might sound simple, but it is really important to be able to cut away clothes in a hurry to get to a wound on a patient. Plus scissors always come in handy, and these are tough enough to get through just about anything.

6. A big needle Just in case someone gets a tension pneumothorax (a dangerous accumulation of air in between your lung and rib cage) you need to be able to poke their chest to let that air escape so blood can still get to their heart, and air into their lungs. At least a 14-gauge needle will suffice. Stick this needle directly into the chest in the space between the 2nd and 3rd ribs below the collarbone and wait for a woosh of escaping air.

7. Bag-mask ventilation device I know airway should be first, but I am putting this farther down the list because if you are by yourself, or with only one other person, you are not going to be able to handle their airway by yourself and carry them. Airway management becomes more difficult the fewer people there are in your group.

Know your limitations.

8. Cricothyroidotomy kit (a kit to punch a big hole in someone’s neck) In case someone gets their face or neck injured and they can’t breathe, sometimes poking a hole in their trachea is the only way to save them.

9. A chest seal or 3 sided dressing A huge puncture hole in the chest with air gurgling out is bad news. If you recognize a sucking chest wound you need a dressing that is sealed on three sides to act as a valve to let air and blood out, and prevent air from coming back in.

10. Stretcher or Board Some sort of device to lift or drag your friends out of the area is useful. Chances are, they won’t be moving under their own weight after a bad injury and one of these will help you get them out of there. …………………………………………….

There are a few caveats to go along with these supplies, none of them are meant to be used without at least some basic training in the techniques for using them, but it’s trauma surgery, not rocket science. All of these tools are designed to be used by people with basic medical training or at least a strong self-assurance if nothing else.

Are they “relevant” in today’s society? YES, sad but true.

While I have suggested these items would be useful in a hypothetical, horror-movie situation, with zombies pursing me in a nightmare, isn’t it interesting that all of these items are available to the general public? Does that not bare some discussion on the state of our society? I suppose it is somewhat suboptimal that we live in a society where practical people are considering these to be essential for self-preservation.

If you walked down the street in any town or city in Ireland in the late seventies or early eighties the odds of seeing a black or Asian person were slim except for the medical students or latterly Black American Basketball players.

One such player is Jerome Westbrooks who came over here in 1981 after graduating from Ronald Reagan’s old Alma Mater Eureka College outside of Chicago.

Jerome is quick to thank the people of Ireland for what he and his family has achieved since arriving with his wife Lois.

“I came over here to play basketball with Killester and thirty two years later I am still here, we have five children. I am a teacher in Portmarnock and all my family has gone through college or are currently in college” “Yes Ireland has been good to us, we are all Irish citizens and when I talk to the new migrants I always point out that you can get what you want in this country if you are prepared to work” Another person who has achieved so much and is instantly recognizable since arriving here is Ifrah Ahmed.

Ifrah is a Somali lady who fled her native war torn land and arrived in Ireland with nothing in 2006 as a young seventeen year old who didn’t know where she was going to land.

Ireland turned out to be her destination and such is the impact that this young lady has made since her arrival that RTE the National TV Broadcaster in Ireland has made an award winning documentary called “Would You Believe” about her amazing story. The documentary has just recently been aired on Australian TV. Ifrah who is now an Irish Citizen and very proud of it, has worked tirelessly since she set herself up in Asylum Seekers Accomodation.

are living in Ireland and we have members from all over the world like Africa, Asia, South America, all over Europe and of course Ireland” This years event was a huge success and we had twenty contestants with the eventual winner being Phokuhle (Pho) Mafu from South Africa.

“We are so proud of Pho, she is going to be a wonderful ambassador for all we stand for and she is ready to work on all of our campaigns” said Ahmed.

A forward thinking person, she set up the Ifrah Foundation, following in the footsteps of her hero Somali Super Model Waris Dirie (Author of the wonderful book Desert Flower) Waris gave up life on the catwalk to campaign for women’s rights and in particular Female Genital Mutilation and this gave the young IFRAH the confidence to do the same here in Ireland and led to the foundation of United Youth of Ireland.

Her work has led to her lobbying the Government in Ireland and the UN in Brussels and working with the likes of Minister Joe Costelloe and his wife Emer who is a European MEP.

Ian McCafferty is Head of Communications at the Integration Centre in Dublin’s Mountjoy Square and he filled us in on the immense work that his office does for the immigrant community that is continuing to grow in Ireland.

She has also worked tirelessly with the European Commissioner of Justice Viviane Reding and recently met another hero of hers Mary Robinson (Former President).

“There are 122,585 Polish residents living here according to the last Census, 112,259 from the UK, 36,683 from Lithuania, 20,593 from Latvian and the top African country in 5thplace is Nigeria with 17,642”

In 2009 she set up Miss Ethnic Ireland, a pageant dedicated to fighting the abuse of women and Female Genital Mutilation. The pageant celebrated its 5th anniversary on November 24th at the Communications Workers Union Convention Centre in Dublin.

Ifrah takes up the story. “Our aim has always been to integrate people of all nationalities who

pay The intention of this article is to explore the nature of opportunities of employment within the American society, without defining or distracting personal goals, beliefs or core values.

In a day and age when the majority of American newsreels are publishing horrific stories about individuals with low self-esteem within this society, we wanted to share with readers an ethical point of view of employers who are giving work to those who seek it.

This is about challenging the perceptions of individuals who can not find full time employment because of their past mistakes or lack of qualifications, yet find a daily job and no matter what the conditions of the

work is, bring home a paycheck.

Within the Labor Finders organization we found both challenges for the employers, who are motivated to find work for individuals on a daily basis, and success stories for the workers, or “associates�, who come to Labor Finders across the country, not only to preserve their self esteem but to eat, on a daily bases.

With professional athletes salaries going through the roof and college graduates that are expecting to have the world at their feet, it’s hard to tell that Labor Finders exist.

There was only one way to find out how this operation runs and exist. More importantly, once hired via Labor

Finders, what do the employees (associates) do? What do they think? What are their goals and ambitions or dreams? Why are they getting up at the ungodly hour of 4.30am to be the first in the door at their respected regional offices to get a “ticket” which is considered a job for the day?

Where was this idea coming from?

was hard to imagine that employment offices such as Labor Finders exist. In this “Relevant Story from a Reliable Source” we infiltrated the system not only to find an amazing story but also to experience the journey first hand.

Before I started my list of questions at one of the head offices in South Florida it was pointed out to me by JC Castilla (one of Florida’s District Managers in Miami); “I totally believe that we are good for the community. The fact that we are fair to our associates is what makes it work. I have been with Labor Finders since 1989; I mean I started off just like most of our associates”.

“Why don’t you call Labor Finders to get a secure job or any job, because sir I haven’t heard of your publication”

The more and more we went through the process it

THE PROCESS Upon arriving in Ft. Lauderdale, I was told by a perfect stranger (as I looked for temporary accommodation);

My reply: “What’s that? If they are labor finders then why do I need to go through them when I can find a job myself” His reply: “Well you can get a job that day and get paid!”

My reply: “I thought, you have to be kidding me. Get paid on the same day!”. My agenda was quite simple. I

///Feature LABOR FINDERS/// was traveling on a shoestring budget across America looking for an amazing story to send to our publisher and editor for WJ. Little did I know I would discover a world I never knew exist.

This experience made me wonder if I was just too cocky or arrogant to know about the agency because of my extensive education or, if I thought I was too good to work for a temporary agency. But why not, right? I needed to bring in a check that day.

Once I filled in the application and informed them that I was driving as well, I was asked to wait, as there may be the possibility of work for me that day. I couldn’t believe that because I had filled in the application at 5 am and went through the other screenings such as safety courses etc., I would have a job of some sort and could get paid that day.

“Then why are people complaining about work or the lack of?”

THE JOB ASSIGNMENT Once I received the ticket (which has the job description and location on it), I was out the door and on a building site before 8am.

The job was the job, but at the end of the day I was back on the premises of Labor Finders and had a check in my hand.

Sounds easy? Well not so fast. From the moment you step onto the job you are basically labeled. The normal workers are either informed of your arrival or instructed to just get the job done and from their glare and stare they more or less treat you as if you are the lowest form of a human. Again this was first hand experience. I was there working for less than $9 dollars an hour just like the next guy. Sure my agenda was completely different from that of the other workers, but was I any different? No. It was obvious to me that, we were labeled “loosers” in the eyes of the regular workers. This couldn’t have been further from the truth. The individuals that get up at that time of the day wants to work and more than anything wanted respect for their efforts.

Was the latter there? It really depended on the job.

Most of the employers motivate the workers of the day with promises of a “repeat” ticket, which would guarantee work for the next day. If the work was easy, it certainly was the main focus on the “associates” mind.

We all need qualifications within the work force. In the land of freedom you also have to have a clean record or an approved background check. The majority of workers at Labor Finders have dubious backgrounds. But here I was witnessing, a company, giving individuals male or female the opportunity to work. As long as they abide by the company rules they qualify for any position that the despatchers at Labor Finders see fit.

This was strange to me as I thought America was the land of opportunities and “chances” no matter how many chances one needed. There was never a day in this short term experience did I not find it a challenge to say, “Hey man, are you kidding me? I normally do this and that and this is only a means to an end for me.”

What impressed me the most was the number of individuals that were lined up out side the Labor Finders’ door on a regular bases. Sometimes these individuals would complain, like anyone else, but they displayed a tenacity to keep their self-respect of working for their earnings. Their past was exactly that, “their past”. All the associates wanted was to earn an honest living.

As I complete this piece sitting in the comfort confines of Dublin, Ireland, I smile with more respect for those who worked at Labor Finders than I ever would any of the subcontractors or employers.

Why? Read on.

The point is, if you work hard enough and the general contractor is satisfied with you then you will be asked back or your “ticket” will be signed as a “repeat”. This guarantees you work for the following day.

However, if you are at Labor Finders at 5.45 am when the doors open, you could be on to the job site within an hour and have a cheque in your hand that day.

JC concluded that Labor Finders makes sure that everyone is happy, as “the associates are also liabilities just as they are products to earn money”.

“If the associates are not happy then we know they wont be repeated for the job the next day.”

Imagine, Labor Finders places over 16,500 jobs daily across the country.

THE JOB EXPERIENCE When you step onto the job site naturally everyone knows you’re from Labor Finders. There is a sense of

urgency to prove yourself to the employer for the “repeat” ticket however you can’t help but look at your watch waiting for the break or the final tick on the clock.

There are egos and unorthodox questions concerning the instructions about the task at hand. For the associates it is their first day and they have to catch up with those who have been on the job for years or months on end. The employers’ motto is “do a good job today and we will call you back.” This by all accounts happens very seldom.

As JC pointed out “ Some of the jobs I wouldn’t go out to do.
