Knutsen adds another record THE WORLD

Knutsen took over the national lead in the 400-yard individual medley for the 1112 age group with her time of 4 minutes, 32.92 seconds, which also improved her

state record in the event. She also set a new state record in the 200 freestyle with her time of 1:54.71. In all, Knutsen won all six of her events in the meet. Natalie Cheal, Vianka Hoyer, Bella Jones, Jerrad Perez-Duncan and Makenna Roberts also had top-10 finishes in the meet for SCAT. Others who competed were Konrad Hoyer, David Roberts and Kenneth Shepherd. Results for the group are listed in today’s Community Scoreboard.

Area teams win titles in Shark Shootout THE WORLD A couple of South Coast teams won their divisions in the fourth annual South Coast Shootout, hosted by the South Coast Sharks last weekend. The North Bend fifthgrade boys, fresh off a second-place finish at the state tournament in central Oregon, won their age group. The Coos Bay Area Basketball Lady Rebels played in two different divisions, winning the seventhgrade division and placing second in the eighth-grade division. Tess Garrett was the most valuable player for the seventh-grade division and Mallory Heyer was the outstanding defensive player in the eighth-grade division. Garrett, Heyer, Gracie Brugnoli, Alex Locati and Halle Layton were named to the all-tournament team.

In the eighth-grade division, the team lost to the Springfield Dream Team in the championship game. In the seventh-grade division, the squad beat teams from Humboldt, Calif., and Crescent City, Calif., and beat the South Coast Sharks of North Bend in the final. Others on the team were Marissa Erickson, Ravyn Geels, Jazmin Chavez, Melanie Cavanagh, Isabella Webster, Maddie Arzie and Taylor Dea. The Sharks were third in the eighth-grade girls division. North Bend boys teams placed second in both the sixth- and seventh-grade divisions, while Coquille’s boys placed third in the eighth-grade bracket. Other results were not available. The tournament is a fundraiser for the South Coast Sharks.

The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon’s sports team will host a Texas hold ’em poker tournament on Saturday, April 19, to raise funds for the club’s sports programs. The event will be held at the Broadway Theatre, 240 S. Broadway in Coos Bay, with registration and seat assignments beginning at 4 p.m. and the tournament starting at 5. Early registration is recommended because seats are limited. The cost to buy in is $75 and a re-buy is $50, with an add-on also $50. The prize pool is based on participation. Proceeds will benefit the youth soccer, vol-

Kindergarten Soccer The Boys & Girls Club’s kindergarten soccer program kicks off next week. The program meets from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through April at the Southwestern Oregon Community College field. Boys and girls will learn the game of soccer while participating in fun drills and competitions with instruction by SWOCC’s players. The fee is $45 with a club membership. Road Runs Upcoming Road Races on the South Coast For more information on upcoming road races and for photos from past events, those interested can log on to the South Coast Running Club’s Web page at www.southcoastrunningclub.org. Salmon Creek Run — Saturday, April 5, starting at 10 a.m. in Powers at the corner of Second Avenue and Hemlock Street. Events include 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races on an out-and-back course along Salmon Creek south of town. The entry fee is $5 ($3 for students under 19) and the winners of each race received canned smoked salmon. For more information, call Joe Hallett at 541439-4485. Roseburg to Coos Bay Relay — Saturday, April 19, starting at KPIC-TV in Roseburg with a staggered start (slower teams start earlier). This 67-mile relay is for five-person teams (or more runners for noncompetitive teams). A related 23-mile walk relay starts at LaVerne County Park near Fairview. Both races finish in Coos Bay at the Fred Meyer store. The event is a fundraiser for Camp, which provides an outdoor experience for children living with cancer. The entry fee is $32 per team member for teams that sign up by April 5 and $37 per team member from April 6-12. No entries are accepted after April 12.
