It’s gonna take a whole lot more than financial obstacles, inhospitable weather, and repetitive trauma to the cervical spine to stop Nada Lunsford in her crusade to provide aid for the homeless in Woodstock and beyond. Seated over a steaming plate of huevos rancheros at Isabel’s Family

Restaurant, with her neck in a restrictive brace, she shares one of her many mission statements for friends in need. “This is what I tell them,” she said. “I wanna be eating in your kitchen a year from now.” Her outreach program, Steven’s Home, which is 100 percent selffunded and run, has assisted McHenry County’s homeless for the past year. She refers to those people in need

as friends, not clients, and supplies meals, housing assistance, tent repair, shoes, phones, and just about anything else one living on the street needs. But to ask Nada, the greatest resource she gives is “trust, compassion, and respect.” “When someone feels empowered, they begin to work for themselves,” she added. See HOMELESS, Page 2

Workers from DK Contractors of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., tear into tennis courts at Emricson Park, where the courts will be resurfaced and restriped. The project will use the two north tennis courts in Emricson and one in Olson Park for pickleball, with pickleball nets installed. That will leave Emricson with three tennis courts and Olson with one. The completion target is June 28.

‘New beginning’ seen at Hearthstone By Susan W. Murray

In a hopeful development for Woodstock’s Hearthstone Communities, SAK Healthcare – headquartered in Riverwoods, Ill. – took over management of the continuing care retirement community on Feb. 8. Residents were introduced to

members of the new management team at a meeting six days later. The Hearthstone complex on North Seminary Avenue includes 28 independent living duplexes; assisted living in Hearthstone Village; skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and memory care at Hearthstone Manor; daycare, preschool, and before- and afterschool care at Hearthstone Learning

Center; and several brick duplexes at Serenity Creek off South Street. SAK Healthcare “specializes in advising distressed healthcare facilities that require strategic redirection and turnaround management services,” according to the company’s website. The move resulted from a See HEARTHSTONE, Page 3
