Voting options worth a look Few contests on primary election ballot might not justify driving to polls By Larry Lough

Next March’s primary election didn’t cause a great rush last week on the final day for candidates to file their campaigns with the office of McHenry County Clerk Joe Tirio. “And no rush on the first day, either,” Tirio noted.

Voters in the Woodstock area will have few decisions to make – whether they take a Democratic or Republican ballot – in the March 19 primary election. “I think it’s probably going to be a low [voter] turnout,” Tirio said. Although 2024 will be a presidential election year, the Democratic and Republican candidates are pretty well

decided at this point, barring a “February surprise,” the clerk said. And while some state-level races will be on the ballot, next year will have no campaign for governor to get voters to the polls. “It’s hard for people to to get excited about down-ballot races,” Tirio said. See ELECTION, Page 2

Water line work is going to cost you By Larry Lough

LARRY@THE WOODSTOCKINDEPENDENT.COM

About 1,300 buildings in Woodstock need to have lead water-service lines replaced under a federal mandate at a cost of more than $10 million. And your water rates are going to go up – once now, and again later – as the city works to comply with state and federal deadlines to fix the

health-related problems in the water supply system. The City Council last week approved a formal Lead Service Line Replacement Program that will meet the federal deadline to complete full replacement by April 15, 2042. City staff members are now working to meet a state deadline of April 15, 2024, to submit a plan to replace all lead service lines as well as any

galvanized pipes connected to lead services. Property owners will share in the cost of the project, since water service lines are privately owned. But the city plans a reimbursement program that will provide up to $8,000 for each single-family residential property that is owner-occupied and $4,000 for commercial See WATER LINES Page 3
