of its starring role in the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day.” Although all of Woodstock’s 23 parks and nature areas will be under review in the coming 2024 Parks Master Plan, planning for the Park in the Square has been fast-tracked to take advantage of funds from a $2.96 million state grant, administered through the Illinois Department of Commerce
and Economic Opportunity. Needed repairs for the bandstand and the Spring House are eligible for some of that funding, with the condition for work to be complete by the end of 2024. Planning for the Park in the Square will consider a wide range of alternatives, in both use and design, with the

Four lanes of Route 47 through Woodstock. Three roundabout intersections. 10-foot-wide path along the east side of the highway. And two construction seasons of major inconvenience.
2024 should be the year that decades-long planning for a widened and improved state highway finally moves into Phase 3 – actual construction from U.S. 14 to Route 120. Just a few months ago, the Illinois Department of Transportation was expecting to accept bids in January, but that has been delayed for the estimated $58 million project. Christina
Betz, the city’s executive director of operations, said mid-April is now the likely date for contractors to submit proposals. Preliminary engineering and an environmental study were approved in April 2019. Since then, the state has focused on detailed design and land acquisition for the project. See ROUTE 47 Page 2
