Greetings Woods Community,
The summer is the perfect time to slow down and reflect on the past year and set new priorities for the upcoming school year. As I reflect on the past school year, it was filled with joy, hard work, and lots of firsts! Over the past year, I have come to value the following at The Woods:
● Students are happy – At the conclusion of Mass one day this year, Monsignor John Enzler leaned over during the processional and said, “The kids are so happy at The Woods,” and I couldn’t agree more! The smiles, laughter, and joy that our students display at all times reminds me of the importance of childhood and is a great reminder to take some time to enjoy the journey.
● Teacher expertise is invaluable – The Woods is fortunate to have experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated faculty and staff who truly care about the whole child. This was on full display as teachers worked the week following the last day of school to ensure there is cohesive curriculum and programming throughout The Woods, reflect on innovating teaching and learning, and identify opportunities for students to engage in hands-on application of their learning.
● Community is the heart of The Woods –The warmth and connection here at The Woods really is unique. There is a sincere level of care and connection amongst all of our community members that really sets us apart. We are an intentionally small school. This was on full display at closing night of the Middle School production of Peter Pan JR. this May. Former students and parents who had been at The Woods for over a decade, and current families all gathered to celebrate and share in the beautiful work of our Middle School students.
● There is true value in a PK-Grade 8 education –The value of having students here at The Woods for potentially eleven formative years of their childhood
is priceless. Not only do they get a top notch education and a solid grounding in their faith, but they are able to form lasting friendships and connections with fellow students and staff. This longevity and consistency helps students face challenges and take risks because they feel loved and supported. Our deep knowledge about each student allows teachers to personalize their approach to learning to meet the needs of students.
The summer has been buzzing here at The Woods as we plan for our 50th Anniversary celebrations this year as well as the launch of our Strategic Plan: Tradition Meets Innovation.
The vision for the Strategic Plan is for The Woods Academy to stay true to its essential identity as an inclusive Catholic community that nurtures the whole child through academic excellence, spiritual enrichment, and character development. The goal of the Tradition Meets Innovation plan is to build upon the foundation of each of these key areas and further define our commitment to preparing our students and community for the evolving, multicultural world around us. At the center of this commitment is our mission: The Woods Academy is an inclusive Catholic community preparing boys and girls to lead lives of significance.
This upcoming year, I am looking forward to celebrating our past while setting the course for the future!
Warmly,
Jess Palladino

50TH ANNIVERSARY
This coming school year, we will begin to celebrate 50 years of The Woods Academy.
On January 29, 1975, Our Lady of the Woods Corporation was admitted to record by the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation. According to the 1976 Annual Report, “the corporation came into existence as a Maryland non-profit corporation for the purpose of conducting a private Roman Catholic school, now known as Our Lady of the Woods Academy. The School was conceived as a continuation of the Lower School of Ursuline Academy, which had operated in Bethesda, MD for more than twenty years prior to its unexpected closing announcement in November, 1974.”
Three families came together after this announcement and decided that they would incorporate Our Lady of the Woods to continue to provide a Catholic school in Bethesda, MD.
The founding families of The Woods Academy, include:
● George and Pat Reese
● John and Rose Scozzafava
● Robert and Jean Walsh
Thanks to the three founding families, The Woods Academy continues to thrive in Bethesda, providing a Catholic education for boys and girls ages 3 to Grade 8. We have had many “owlvocates” (a person who gives their significant time, talent, and treasure to transform the lives of The Woods Academy students) over the past 50 years and we look forward to honoring them throughout the 2025 calendar year.
We hope our whole community –from the past 50 years – will join us in January for our celebratory events to kickoff the 50th anniversary of The Woods Academy! Save the dates for the fun events we’ll host in January – you can see the initial list on the following page. If you’re interested in helping with the 50th anniversary events, please reach out to Director of Advancement Caitlin Chalke. She would love your assistance in making sure we remember the rich history of The Woods while looking to its bright future.

GRADUATION DAY RECAP
GRADUATION SPEECHES CLASS OF 2024
On Friday, May 31st, we celebrated the Class of 2024 at our Grade 8 graduation ceremony. It was a day dedicated to honoring the remarkable accomplishments of our students and recognizing their hard work throughout their journey here. As faculty and staff, we have cherished watching them grow into the individuals they are today. We are confident that they will continue to excel as students, and we eagerly anticipate their future achievements. Congratulations, Class of 2024!

Student Reflection
I feel very grateful to have been a part of this amazing community of students, teachers, and parents who have supported all of us throughout our time here. This class is full of so many extraordinary kids that I have had the privilege to learn and grow with and I know much of that is owed to all of the teachers that played a role in our lives here at The Woods.
These teachers have also been our guides throughout the high school application process and were ready and willing to help us whenever we needed it. I know that we are grateful for all of the work that these teachers have put in to help us not only with our time at The Woods but also in preparing us as we take the next steps to high school.
I would like to thank you, the Class of 2024, for all you have done for each other, me, and The Woods community. We have helped each other grow just as much as any teacher or parent.
We have been there for each other during our time at The Woods, and for me, this place has come to feel like a second home. We have made lifelong friends – we are The Woods, and we will all continue to be. Whether we know it or not, we have all made a lasting impact on each other’s lives. I will never take the time we’ve had here for granted, and I am going to remember The Woods Academy as an extraordinary place because of all of you, my friends, classmates, teachers, and parents.
Luka Radović Class of 2021
Alumni Reflection
I’d like to highlight the game of kickball as an analogy for our experiences at The Woods, you’re not quite sure of all of the rules, and the field looks enormous, but as you play, you start to understand the game better. You kick the ball further and with more accuracy each time you step up to the plate, and as students, we all grow for the better in our respective ways throughout middle school. Being dropped off on Greentree Road for the first time is just like stepping up to the plate for the first time.
As you gain experience, you find your rhythm, and you learn that your friends and teachers are there to support you, just like your teammates in a kickball match.
As you all begin your transition into high school, remember that the game isn’t over – it’s just moving to a bigger field with new challenges and opportunities. High school will bring faster pitches, and tougher opponents, and it will require more practice, but you’re ready for it. You’ve already learned how to play the game, how to work with others, and most importantly, how to keep going even when things get tough. Your hours upon hours of practice and dedication as a student of The Woods Academy have set you all up for success.
Congratulations, Class of 2024. You’ve turned the final page on an important chapter in your lives, and this is just the beginning.
I know that you have all been given the knowledge and skills necessary to step up to the plate and take whatever pitch is thrown your way with confidence. The field is yours.

CAPSTONE
The Grade 8 Capstone Leadership Project at The Woods Academy is an end-of-year reflection where students look back on their time here at The Woods. They showcase examples of how they have embodied the four pillars of The Woods Academy – O.W.L.S. –throughout their time here and outline their plans to uphold these principles in the future. One of our recent graduates, Santiago de Lucio, describes his personal experiences implementing and exemplifying these pillars during his time here.
Open To Growth
The willingness to accept the challenge of always pushing to do more than what is required of me. That mindset will assure me that I will succeed.
Since I arrived from Argentina at The Woods in Grade 6, I’ve embraced the challenge of adapting to my new reality. When I came to a country where a different language was spoken, it was tough at first, but the support of The Woods teachers and friends that I made along my journey helped me overcome these new challenges. I am proud to say that The Woods gave me the tools to develop new skills that made me more resilient and also guided me to get accepted into the high school of my choice.
Willing To Live My Faith
I live my faith by attending Mass on Sundays and participating in the sacraments. My Confirmation has made me closer to God. Reverence, Understanding, and Courage are among the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit that I’ve received in confirmation. We also thank God for everything He has given us. I have also given back to the community by helping people pack food for the ones in need.
Leaders In Their Community
I have been a leader through my participation in The Woods soccer team. I was the captain for the 3 years that I have been here and also received the Coaches Award
each year. I have always encouraged the boys at soccer because I love the sport.
Striving For A Just And Joyous Life
Striving for a just and joyous life for me means working hard to make things fair for everyone and finding happiness in what you do. It’s about treating people with kindness and respect while also enjoying life’s moments and opportunities.
In conclusion, I feel that The Woods has helped me grow as a person, becoming a better friend, student, and member of the community. The Woods has given me the tools and confidence to achieve greatness. Every day at The Woods was a happy day for me. I will always remember the staff and teachers as my family and will always remember these lovely three years of my life.

GRADE 8 TESTIMONIALS
As our Grade 8 students prepare to enter high school, we asked them to reflect on their time at The Woods Academy. Read on to discover their thoughts and experiences!
Q How do you think The Woods Academy has prepared you for high school?
Carina Radolinski – The Woods has taught me so many different skills for how to manage my time, keep myself organized, and study thoroughly and I know that these skills will be very helpful in high school.
Q How do you think The Woods Academy is different from other schools?
Selah Tappin – It’s a very tight-knit community.
Megan Holmes – The teachers are what made the most significant difference. At my old school, the teachers just taught. There was only one teacher I had who made things fun. Here at The Woods Academy, all the teachers did what that one teacher did, ten times more! It would always be interesting, and the classes were either intriguingly useful or fun.
Andrei Radović – The arts program is elite. I loved theater.
Q If you could use only one word to describe The Woods, what would it be? Why?
Charles Nicholas – Fantastic, everything about the Woods is great. I believe you can make any place great if you have a positive mindset.
Maren Petretich – Welcoming. The school is inclusive and the community is friendly and welcoming.
Q If you could take one thing with you from The Woods to high school, what would it be?
Jacqueline Pineau – Amazing support from teachers.
Asher Coleman – It would be that I should always be open to growing and trying new things.
Q What do you want The Woods community to remember about you and your time at The Woods?
Sara Holmes – I want The Woods community to remember me for all the good, positive things I’ve done for this school, like picking up the balls that people left behind.

auditioned for significant roles in the musical, and took up new instruments. Their stories showed me how much you can grow by stepping out of your comfort zone.
At the same time, it was a bit sad knowing that many of us had developed friendships with the Grade 8 students through activities like the spring musical and hanging out during breaks and recess. It was also a little scary realizing that next year, I will be in their position. High school is a
“I am reassured knowing that the teachers at The Woods are incredibly supportive and friendly.”
I recently attended the Grade 8 graduation ceremony, and it stirred up a lot of mixed emotions in me. It was incredibly heartwarming to see my classmates who have been at The Woods since they were three years old graduating alongside those who joined in Grade 8. This truly reflected how welcoming and inclusive The Woods community is, clearly seen through the students’ strong friendships.
I felt inspired listening to how the Grade 8 class pursued their passions during their time at The Woods. They tried new sports,
bit intimidating, and the thought of transitioning there next year is both scary and exciting.
However, I am reassured knowing that the teachers at The Woods are incredibly supportive and friendly. They not only help us with regular assignments and tests but also prepare us for high school entrance exams. Hearing about the support the Grade 8 students received during their application and preparation process gives me confidence that my grade and those to follow will be just fine.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
This year’s Come One, Come All Auction was an evening filled with love and warmth towards The Woods Academy.
This spectacular event would not have been possible without the helping hands of our Auction Co-Chairs and the amazing Auction Committee. Please find the full list on the opposite page. Thank you to these parent volunteers for dedicating their time to The Woods Academy, creating an evening that all enjoyed.
The tradition of The Woods Academy’s auction is to not only celebrate the joyful and unique school that The Woods Academy is, but to also provide an opportunity to support a particular priority for the school. This year’s “Fund Our Future” (raise the paddle) was for our “Brighten the Blacktop” initiative, which will help
refresh and revive the back blacktop and play area at The Woods. Funds raised from this year’s Fund Our Future will help our school add trees and landscaping around the campus as well as remove the current asphalt in the back and repave it creating a safe, useful, and fun environment for our whole community. The repaved blacktop area will have our children’s favorite games, including basketball court lines, four square, hopscotch, copy me games, and more.
Thank you to the supporters of this initiative at this year’s gala and the days following. It was a tremendous success and that is all thanks to our community! More details will be
shared in our annual report around this initiative (you can find the draft annual report via the QR code below), but the work in the back of the building for the Brighten the Blacktop initiative is already underway! We are confident our students will be beyond thrilled with this upgrade come September.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS
Another year has passed, bringing with it a season of growth and reflection. We asked our teachers to share their thoughts as they look back on this past school year.
What inspired you to teach?
Megan Mullally, Grade 5 and 6 Math Teacher
I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember… When I started teaching, I was actually a 3rd grade teacher in my elementary school and found a book that my class had written. In it, I had said that I would be a teacher when I grew up. In addition to my family members, my teachers influenced my decision to get into education. During my elementary, middle, and high school years, I had some teachers that made a big difference in my life. They went above and beyond, and I will always remember the positive impact they had on me.
Colleen Kish, Grade 5 and 6 Language Arts Teacher
I was the youngest of three siblings for 14 years until my parents unexpectedly had another child. My early adult years were spent chaperoning his field trips and running him and his friends around. Those memories are what drew me to teaching middle school. For some reason, I loved supporting him during those middle school years.
If you could share one piece of advice with students, what would it be?
Andrea Webber, Montessori II Teacher
Ask lots of questions and listen closely to the answers. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake or be wrong! Mistakes are proof that you’re trying. If you are trying your best, that’s all anyone can ask for.
Jill O’Shea, Librarian
Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy! Enjoy your life and explore!
Stephanie Rocco, Grade 3 Teacher
Don’t be afraid to make a mistake or be wrong! Mistakes are proof that you’re trying. If you are trying your best, that’s all anyone can ask for.
TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS
If you weren’t teaching/working at a school, what would you be doing?
Capri Coleman, Grade 2 Teacher
I can’t see myself doing anything else.
Mary D’Antonio, Grade 4 Teacher
I contemplated between becoming a chef or a labor and delivery nurse. Both careers promised happiness and excitement. However, the pull towards education was undeniably stronger for me. Fortunately, teaching has proven to encompass both the thrill and joy I was looking for!
So far in your career, what do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Tom Parker, PE Teacher
Keeping students from not giving up after they have failed several times and seeing the confidence grow in them once they have succeeded.
Kimberley Jibladze, French Teacher
Creating the Paris trip as a part of the Grade 8 curriculum and starting the Owl/Grade 7 French class!
Danielle Shegerian, Grade 1 Teacher
My greatest achievement is seeing my students develop a love for learning.

Since 1999, Erin has been a steadfast member of The Woods Academy community. Erin joined The Woods faculty as a firstgrade teacher soon after earning her Master’s degree as a Reading Specialist from Hood College. As a classroom teacher, Erin worked collaboratively with her colleagues and parents to provide a strong foundation for our young learners. She also shared her athletic talents coaching girls basketball and softball teams along the way. In 2016, Erin transitioned from the classroom to the playing courts and fields and became Athletic Director. Her dedication, teamwork, and leadership on and off the field have had a positive impact on all who have been lucky enough to interact with her. In addition, Erin is the proud parent of a 2024 Woods graduate. Her son Jake was a Woods Lifer and her daughter Kylie will enter 6th Grade this fall. INTERVIEW WITH INES VEGA
By Bridget B.
SCAN THE QR CODE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE!
At the Woods Academy, we strongly support volunteering in our free time and giving back to the community when we can, in whatever ways we can. Alumni parent Ines Vega is someone who shows these values in The Woods community. Ines Vega has frequently volunteered in different ways and has served on the Woods Board of Trustees since 2019. When it came time for the recent renovations of the school, Ines played a major role. I hope you enjoy this interview with Ines Vega, who helped manage the school renovations.
Q What is your connection with The Woods Academy?
A “Three of my children have graduated from The Woods
Academy. My two boys started in Montessori and first grade. Then my oldest child, our daughter, started a year later in sixth grade.”
Q Can you describe what your role was in the renovations at school?
A “I was like an owner’s representative in a way. I tried to translate everything that the school needed to the design team and the construction team – and vice versa, to essentially explain to the school team how the construction and the design worked.”
Q How long did the renovations take, including the planning time?
A “About four years ago, we started selecting the architect for the project and we started the design right after that, so about three and a half years. We were slowed down by the pandemic in between because we almost took a year longer in design than we should have. It typically ends up taking much longer to design than it takes to construct.”
Q How much time did you end up spending on the entire renovation process?
A “Some weeks I spent an hour or two and some weeks I spent about the time of a full-time job, depending on what was going on at that time and how we were preparing for things like the
budgeting and everything else. Sometimes it took up a lot of time for just planning out certain efforts.”
Q What motivated you to volunteer and help with the renovations?

A “I saw it as a way to give thanks because the experience here at The Woods Academy was so wonderful for my three kids and I knew this project would touch the lives of everyone in the building. I just want to thank the whole community for being there for my kids, the teachers and the students and the community in general. Overall, it was my way of showing my gratitude to the school.”
Q What were some of your favorite parts of working on the renovations?
A “One of my favorite things was in the planning process, in the early design phase, when we were trying to explain to the architect what we wanted the spaces to be. We met with all the teachers and all of the administration to discuss exactly what the different spaces would be used for. We came up with lists that we gave to the architect and that is how the design came to be. It was a description of how we wanted to use the space. Then the architects were able to create the space for that.
WILLIAMSBURG
By: Ian F. and Dylan M-J.
Every year the seventh graders travel to Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown for their Grade 7 overnight trip. We spent a total of 3 days and 2 nights, and the hotel we stayed at is called The Woodlands, and it’s in Williamsburg. Our first stop was Jamestown. During our visit to Jamestown, we were able to see authentic recreations of different sights. Such as the ships that brought the first colonists to Jamestown, a recreation of a native Powhatan tribe, and the English fort. Our second stop was Williamsburg and it’s the largest outdoor educational living museum in the world. It was made by John D. Rockefeller.
THANKSGIVING HAPPENINGS AT THE WOODS
By Lizzie B. and Lillian K.
Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and acknowledge those who have helped you. During this Thanksgiving season, The Woods has taken action to spread gratitude with gratitude exercises and activities. One of the gratitude activities held at The Woods was the prayer partner activity led by Grade 7 girls where we went around to classrooms, and handed out paper for people to write what they’re thankful for. We then put all of the strips into feathers and put them on a turkey.
A BOARD MEMBER FOR OTHERS
By Dylan M-J., Co-Editor of The Owl Post
The first board member that I had the opportunity to interview was Mr. John Glennon. He is the headmaster at Georgetown Preparatory School, a Jesuit high school in our area. Mr. Glennon was born and raised just outside of Boston, Massachusetts and did his early education there before he moved to our area to do his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University. After completing a masters degree at Georgetown he completed additional post graduate studies at Harvard University.

THANK YOU, WAPTO!
The 23-24 school year did not disappoint as it relates to community events. The Woods Academy Parent Teacher Organization (WAPTO) outdid themselves with the plethora of events and activities for the parent community to gather together and connect with one another. They also showered our teachers with appreciation!
A BIG thank you to WAPTO leaders Amanda Candy and Aly Leydig for leading these initiatives and making sure every detail was covered. Amanda served as WAPTO President from 2022–2024 and accomplished so much in that timeframe. Thank you for all that you have done, Amanda!

What is a Woods Parent Ambassador?
Parent Ambassadors help increase outreach to all Woods parents, particularly new families, and to provide ample opportunities for all families to feel part of The Woods community. WAPTO relies on its ambassadors to welcome new families and share their knowledge and know-how of The Woods, while encouraging grade-level involvement in a myriad of activities throughout the year. Each grade level (Montessori – Middle School) in the Lower School and Middle School has one ambassador.
Why Volunteer?
We asked our parent volunteers from the 23-24 school year why they volunteer at The Woods Academy and we couldn’t love their responses more! Do you want to volunteer next year at The Woods? Email Director of Advancement Caitlin Chalke (cchalke@woodsacademy.org) and let her know!
I enjoy volunteering at The Woods because it allows me to contribute to the community that is nurturing my children into productive citizens. It gives me a chance to be actively involved in their education, connect with other parents and teachers, and witness firsthand the positive impact the school environment has on their growth and development.
Deb Notini (P’27, ‘31)
I enjoy volunteering, because it allows me to give back to the school that has given so much to my children. I also hope to spread the great news of The Woods Academy to others in our community through my volunteer activities.
Kimberly Sherman (P’28, ‘24)
Volunteering at the Woods is a great way to meet and develop relationships with other families, which makes our community even stronger.
Brooke Ybarra (P’26, ‘28)
It’s very comforting to be able to contribute as a volunteer, supporting the school in various initiatives to make the children happier and the school more united.
Isabel Quintana (P’26, ‘28, ‘31)
Love the chance to get to experience the joy and fun of Woods with the children. To see why they are always excited to go each day.
Donna Swistowski (P’22, ‘25, ‘28)
Volunteering stems from several rewarding experiences, such as: connecting with my kid’s education; helping me build relationships with staff, teachers, and other parents; contributing to a positive school atmosphere and helping with various activities and events. Lastly, enjoying the satisfaction that comes from giving back and making a difference in the educational experience of many children.
Maryangelica Prado (P’31, ‘33)
It makes me feel a part of the wonderful community! I love getting the word out about how amazing the school has been for our family, and could be for so many others!
Jess Nolen (P’33, ‘35)
