AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS AT THE WOODS
CHECKMATE! According to research*, after school programs increase learning time by providing educational opportunities that are more engaging, broadening young peoples’ skills and interests. These programs provide social and intellectual enrichment, such as music, dance, artwork, and service learning opportunities to instill a broader set of values.
The Woods Academy provides a variety of after school activities for our students to help them expand their mindset in new areas or help them finetune certain skills like playing an instrument.
The Chess Club is one of the Woods ‘ most popular after school activities. Students of all grades are welcome to participate and engage in friendly competition under the supervision of the 5th and 6th Grade Social Studies Teacher Mr. Kalas. Students involved show great interest in the activity and are willing to further develop their skills whether they’re new or greatly experienced. The 8th grade contributors asked a few chess participants some questions…
What is your favorite thing about the chess club? “I get to use my mind and just relax!” Constantine P. (3rd grade)
Why do you like to play chess? “It messes with my mind, it is a great mind game.” Quentin T. (8th grade)
Why did you start playing chess? “I’ve been playing chess with my father since I was little. I have always enjoyed the thinking and strategy of the game.” Mr. Kalas (5th and 6th Social Studies teacher)
What we find to be unique about the Chess Club here at Woods is the strong sense of community and togetherness we see amongst the players. Students have the opportunity to work on tactical abilities and challenge their minds while socializing with their peers.
