With that in mind, we are turning our focus towards our Emergency Department. We understand that our emergency services touch the lives of almost every family in our community in some way. In fact, with approximately 40,000 visits a year at Driscoll’s Emergency Department on Alameda and at our Urgent Care facility on Saratoga, and with the knowledge that 44% of the children admitted to our hospital come through the ER, it’s no wonder we consider the Emergency Department our front door to the hospital.

During the past few months we have studied pediatric emergency rooms across the country and met with experts and our staff to determine what is needed to best serve our patients and their families. We know that we need to expand our emergency facilities by creating additional private rooms and a central state-of-the art physician and nursing station. And, we are committed to maintaining the warm, welcoming and caring environment that is Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

A Message from

The Driscoll Development Foundation Board President When I walked into Driscoll Children’s Hospital for the first time I knew immediately that there was something different, something extraordinary about this children’s hospital. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. It was an inexplicable, intangible quality that was present on every floor, in every department and in every employee who walked the halls.

Interestingly, the more involved I became as a volunteer and then a board member at Driscoll, the more that intangible “something” grew; and I realized that it was everywhere. There was an overwhelming sense of caring in the faces and actions of the doctors, nurses, technicians and service providers at every level. Even more amazing, it wasn’t just for the children, the caring extended to the entire family — to every member — and it starts the moment a child arrives at Driscoll and then extends way beyond the child’s stay in the hospital. In fact, we often hear families leave Driscoll having made friends for life with those who have cared so compassionately for them and their children.

What this actually means is that there is no limit to the caring and healing at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. It is truly caring without measure or concern for what might be given in return. Perhaps some might define it as a magical quality. Certainly there is an element of that here. But rather than magic, that inexplicable “something” is actually a deep passion — a passion that actually comes from the heart, and is at work here every single day.

The more you see and know about Driscoll Children’s Hospital the more you understand that having such a hospital in South Texas is a rare gift — one that we certainly need to count among our greatest blessings. And the second blessing of equal importance is having all of the passionate people who share their talents and their caring for children right here in our own backyard.

C

ynthia Maldonado sits along side her husband, Roger, on one of the recently-built concrete benches at the city’s newest water garden park just across the street from American Bank Center and watches while three of their six children splash and play together just as children should — without a care in the world.

“My husband,” she muses quietly, “sometimes asks me if I want to move from Corpus Christi.”

Glancing up at him for just a moment and turning back again to take in the scene of her children laughing and playing, she says with obvious conviction, “I just shake my head and say, ‘No, I will never leave Driscoll Hospital.’”

er reason, she confides easily, “I know there are children’s hospitals everywhere, but I don’t think there is any other children’s hospital like Driscoll. They are saving my kids.”

And Cynthia does mean kids, plural.

As thus far, two of her six children who range in age from 19 months to 13 years old have a genetic kidney disease that results in complete kidney failure, the need for dialysis and ultimately a kidney transplant.

“My husband and I both carry the gene that causes this type of kidney disease. There is nothing,” she says with resignation, “we can do about that. We just have to wait and see, hope and pray that our other four children will not get it also. We can’t keep that from happening, but what we can do for them is to stay close to Driscoll where they can get everything they need.”

At that moment, Mark who is now a fourth grade student at Kostoryz Elementary School and had his kidney transplant at Driscoll two years ago, comes running out of the water, soaking wet and grinning with unmistakable joy. He speaks politely to everyone as introductions are made, but it’s obvious he has something on his mind.

He has a plan. He wants to take two of his younger siblings to the tall side of the water garden and jump into the water together.

Mom says no, and Mark shrugs, smiles and returns to the water. No big deal.

For Mark, the beginning symptoms of juvenile nephronophthisis began early on in his life. He was officially diagnosed at the age of eight, but his parents had noticed that prior to that for a couple of years he had grown very little, if at all; his shoe and clothes sizes remained the same and he was always thirsty and wanted salty foods.

“We were a little worried, but we were not too concerned at that point,” recalls Cynthia. “Then one night Mark started screaming in the middle of the night and said he had these terrible cramps in his legs. It happened three times. So we took him to the doctor the next day, and they immediately rushed him to Driscoll.

His kidneys were only functioning at 20 percent. He had hypertension and he was in renal failure.

“I was shocked,” remembers Cynthia. “I don’t think any parent is prepared for anything like this with their child. Mark was in the hospital for two days. They ran all of the tests and Dr. Al-Akash told us what Mark had and that he would need to go on dialysis at Driscoll and he would need a kidney transplant. We couldn’t believe it.

“That” she recalls, “was in August of 2007.

In April of 2008, Mark went on dialysis.

On August 18, 2008 he had a kidney offer, and on August 19 he had his transplant at Driscoll. He had been on dialysis for only five months. I know,” Cynthia says with complete conviction, “God had a hand in all of this.

“And the reason I know and there is no doubt in my mind,” she explains, “is

“Mark has always been that way,” Cynthia explains. “Nothing bothers him too much.

Even when we found out he had this kidney disease. He took it well, and he wanted to know everything about it. He’s always been on top of things. He knows what medications he is taking and when he takes them. And now since he has been through everything, Mark helps his 13-year-old brother, Dondi, who was recently diagnosed with the disease, is now on dialysis at Driscoll three days a week and is on the kidney transplant list.”

“Mark and Dondi,” explains Dr. Samhar Al-Akash, pediatric nephrologist and medical director of the Renal Transplant Program at Driscoll, “have a disease called juvenile nephronophthisis characterized by loss of the kidney’s concentrating ability leading to very dilute urine, increased urination amount and frequency often w w w.D r i s c o l l C h i l d r e n s . org

because on August 18 we were supposed to go to Disney World through Make A Wish Foundation, and there was something in my mind — even up to the moment when we were about to go through security at the airport — that we shouldn’t go. Well what happened at security was I couldn’t find my ticket; it was missing. So I had to go back downstairs and see if I could find it or get a new one. I went all the way back and I found it. But when I was just about to get on the escalator to come back up, Roger and the whole family were coming down. I couldn’t imagine what was happening. Roger said, ‘They called, they have a kidney for Mark we have to go now.’

I know in my heart,” smiles Cynthia, “God was keeping us from getting on that plane.

smiles, “now Driscoll does living donor transplants, so if a parent, family member or friend donates their kidney they can be right there in the next room. That,” she smiles knowingly, “is a great thing.”

As Cynthia finishes that thought, Mark and his younger siblings — sensing swim time is about over — walk hand-in-hand up to their mom and dad and start chatting about what is next on the day’s agenda.

And as usual Mark, who his mom says sometimes wakes up as early as 4 a.m. ready to go, has plans.

During Driscoll’s Pilot for a Day program, Mark met the Blue Angels.

As for how long Mark’s transplanted kidney will last, Dr. Al-Akash explains, “Generally speaking a kidney from a deceased donor is expected to last 13-15 years, and from a living donor a few more years.”

“I have to stay healthy. I want to be a pilot one day.”

“We went straight to Driscoll. At 7:00 a.m. the next morning Mark went into surgery and by noon he had his new kidney. After that he was in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for one day and on the third day after his surgery we checked him out of the hospital and he wanted to play. It was,” recalls Cynthia incredulously, “as if nothing had happened. We couldn’t believe it.”

“My husband was a match for Mark as a living donor,” explains Cynthia, “but we decided that since it is so much easier for a child to get on the transplant list and receive a kidney than an adult that we would hold off on Roger donating his kidney because he might need to do that for Mark or Dondi later in life. And,” she

“Saturday I’m going to run the half marathon at Whataburger Field, so I need to go run today. I have to stay healthy. I want to be a pilot one day,” he grins.

Then his dad interjects, “Yes, but remember Mark what do you have to do first if you want to become a pilot? You have to study for four years in college before you can go into the military.” Mark immediately nods knowingly and then begins to tell his story about being a Driscoll Children’s Hospital Pilot for a Day and meeting the Blue Angels, who his mom says to Mark are the equivalent of rock stars.

Yes, Mark Maldonado has big plans — high flying plans for his future. But for the moment, with his new kidney in place and functioning well, Mark Maldonado can focus on what he now has a chance to do best – living life and getting to be exactly what he is, an 11-year-old boy growing up with a loving family in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Pilot for a Day

But for Cynthia and Roger Maldonado seeing was certainly believing as Mark began to grow again, he could eat just about anything within reason, he could run, swim and play baseball, all items on his favorites list and every now and then even have a hamburger and french fries.

“But at my house,” smiles Cynthia, “we are healthy eaters, all of us. There is nothing but water to drink. That is all my family drinks and we have turkey burgers, no cheese, no chips or salt. We want Mark and Dondi to eat healthily so Mark can keep his kidney for as long as possible, Dondi will be as healthy as possible when he receives his kidney and our other children will be healthy also.”

Raising Awareness for

CHILDHOOD CANCER

More than 450 community members came to Driscoll Children’s Hospital on September 14th and showed their support for a worthy cause — childhood cancer awareness. The first-ever event of its kind was a victory for our pediatric cancer patients and for raising awareness of this disease. Attendees were able to donate hair — with Driscoll oncology patients operating the barber’s shears. A final touch up was provided by local hairstylists who graciously gave of their time. All 175 ponytails collected were donated to Children with Hairloss, Inc. In addition to hair donation, community members also had the opportunity to donate blood at the Coastal Bend Blood Center BloodMobile, with 31 people donating to save 93 lives.

“People have come here to give from their hearts,” stated Mara Ellis, Child Life Specialist with the Stripes Child Life Program at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

New Voice Lab Includes Suite of Modern Equipment In June, Driscoll Children’s Hospital’s Rehabilitation Center hosted an open house to unveil its new voice lab, consisting of an endoscopy tower which includes two distal chip endoscopes, voice analysis programs, rigid stroboscopy and a nasometer. The instruments, used to teach children to orally communicate, allow for increased accuracy in diagnosis, efficient and specific therapy and enhanced care and experience for the patient.

This specialized equipment is used in therapy to address voice and resonance problems; at Driscoll, it is primarily used for children with cleft palates.

Perhaps the most impressive feature of the endoscopy tower is the stroboscopy function. The rigid strobe, or small camera, is inserted deep into the mouth to view the vocal folds in motion. w w w.D r i s c o l l C h i l d r e n s . org

Intern for a Day A DAY IN THE LIFE

This unique program offers community leaders a firsthand opportunity to experience the practice of pediatric medicine. On October 28th, Ashley Cocke, Mary Sterrett, Leslie McClanahan and Sally Wallace shadowed physicians from various service areas of the hospital throughout the day, accompanying him/her through everything from office rounds to clinic visits to surgery. Intern for a Day is an exceptional way for medical staff at Driscoll to show appreciation to key supporters and develop even stronger relationships and involvement between the hospital and the community.

“High Hopes”for

DCH Summer Campers A growing program at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, summer camps for patients of all ages with all conditions provide a much-needed opportunity for kids to be kids! Patients experience the independence, friendship and adventure that camping provides in a safe environment suited for their particular medical needs. Specialized camps in areas of cardiology, nephrology, oncology, hematology and others give children outlets to socialize with peers with the same conditions and give families opportunities to network. DCH Nursing staff are onhand to administer medication and monitor the health and safety of each camper. These camps continue to be very popular among patients, and are made possible in large part by private support from the community.

NICU REUNION

CELEBRATING MIRACLES In October, more than 350 patients and families attended the annual Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Reunion. The Fall Festival, designed to bring NICU families and hospital staff together for an afternoon of fellowship and fun, featured games, prizes, moonwalks, pumpkin decorating and other children’s activities.

“We have so much fun visiting with our patients and families,” NICU Director Patricia Carr said. “It is a very special time for the staff. They enjoy seeing how their patients have progressed. There are few things that bond people together like sharing the birth of a child, and if that child is sick or has special needs, the bonds are even tighter. We are all thankful for the opportunity to work with these wonderful children and their families.”

Dr. Stern earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, completed his residency and internship in pediatrics at the University of Maryland Hospital and his fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Duke University Medical Center.

magine, you are a Mom and you are donating your kidney to your child who will not survive without it. No doubt, stress is high for you and your family. But the good news is you are a living donor, you are giving your child life for the second time, and even better you are in the same hospital right next door to your child. You are there with them literally every step of the way. What could be better? Only one thing if you live in South Texas: The fact that you can now — as part of Driscoll’s Renal Transplant Program — have a living donor transplant performed at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

“We performed our fist living donor transplant at Driscoll in June,” explains Dr. Samhar Al-Akash, pediatric nephrologist and medical director of Driscoll’s Renal Transplant Program. “The living donor

program took about a year to bring to life.

It was a huge team effort, but we now have the ability, in addition to the accreditation which we had since 2006, and we can ease the stress on families and children.

And,” he says candidly, “it is very rare to have a living donor program in a pediatric center. In fact,” he says, “we are the only city in America that has a pediatric renal transplant program but does not have an adult transplant program.

“The living donor program,” explains Dr. Steve Almond, pediatric surgeon and surgical director of the transplant program, “has been a tremendous advantage for the medical teams and families. For the medical team, the logistics of coordinating those two operations (previously done in two different hospitals) is much easier. In addition, the amount of time the organ spends out of the body is decreased. For the family, it allows the friends and family to come together at one hospital to see both the donor and the recipient. And it allows the donor, usually a mother or father, to see their child immediately after the postoperative period simply by walking down the hall.”

Obviously the transplant program and living donor program at Driscoll Children’s Hospital are an extension of the dialysis program which began in October 2004 as the vision of Dr. William Allen, pediatric nephrologist and administrator of Driscoll’s Renal Transplant Program. The transplant program has made extraordinary strides with superior results in a very short period of time, and that is exactly what the team had in mind from the outset.

“When I came here from Saudi Arabia in 2006,” explains Dr. Al-Akash, “I came here to work with Dr. Allen and Dr. Almond to start a transplant program that would have

excellent outcomes. Our original goal was to do five or six transplants the first year. We did 13 the first year with excellent outcomes and since we began the transplant program in 2007, we have performed an average of 12 transplants per year, one per month with 100 percent success rate. In fact we exceed the national average in every category from patient survival to length of hospital stay — our hospital stay is an average of threeand-a-half days and the national average is 11 days.”

Dr. Almond also believes Driscoll’s program already has a proven record of success and has come a long way since its beginning in August of 2006.

“In the first two years, we did the administrative work to get the program going by developing policies, procedures, educating the staff and obtaining UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) approval and Medicare approval. We performed the first transplant on February 14, 2007. Since then we have performed 38 renal transplants with overall patient and graft (organ) survival rates of 100 percent and 97 percent respectively, well above the national average.”

“In addition,” explains Dr. Al-Akash, “even though we have a young program at Driscoll we have the expertise and knowledge that make us comfortable doing complex cases. We are comfortable with what we do and we have a great team from the nephrologists to the surgical team, the case manager, nurses, nurse supervisors, educators, social workers, dieticians, financial coordinator and of course the dialysis nurses.

“And the dialysis nurses,” Dr. Al-Akash says soberly, “they are not nurses, they

are angels. You can just feel how they love and care for their patients.

We would not have as wonderful of outcomes without them. Because the reality is to have a successful transplant program you have to have a successful dialysis program.

The 15th Annual Golf Classic and 5th Annual Singer Songwriter Showcase were held September 30th and October 1st, 2010, at the Corpus Christi Country Club. Award winning singer songwriters Casey Beathard, Don Schlitz and Allen Shamblin entertained a captivated crowd with favorite hit songs — some current and some classic. The audience offered a standing ovation and called for an encore performance to top off a delightful evening.

Lunch and a shotgun start kicked off the Golf Classic the following day. The Classic sold all of its 36 sponsorships, and 124 players came out to enjoy the fantastic weather. Valero Texas Open Benefit for Children Golf Classic Awards $35,000 Driscoll Children’s Hospital was honored to be the recipient of a $35,000 gift from the 2010 Valero Texas Open Benefit for Children Golf Classic. The generous grant will be used for the renovation of a hospice room, named the Butterfly Room, in an effort to provide families and patients at Driscoll with an environment of compassionate care.
