VT Group in the waste sector As government landfill taxes rise, society & organisations need to discover the most efficient ways to minimise, reuse and recycle the waste of their communities. VT offers them a unique approach to addressing this. Working with experienced technology partners we use project management and engineering expertise to identify ways of educating waste producers and processing waste as a resource, reducing the need for landfill. Applying technology VT draws upon a range of technologies to create effective waste management solutions. Autoclave A large pressure cooker that injects steam into the waste under pressure, while agitating it to sterilise and break it down. Sorting systems Once ‘cooked’ in the autoclave, clean metals, glass, plastics and aggregates are recovered using a state-of-the-art mechanical sorting processes and sent for reprocessing/ recycling. Fibre, clean of contaminants and high in biomass content, is prepared to produce gas either through Anaerobic Digestion or Pyrolysis/Gasification.

Green power generation Autoclave fibre can be mixed with water and treated in anaerobic digestion tanks. Natural organisms digest the fibre giving off a methane gas which is collected, stored and used to generate heat and power in gas engines, with excess power being exported to the national grid. Alternatively, advanced thermal treatment processes, such as pyrolysis and gasification, converts the fibre into an inert residue and gas which again can be used to generate heat and power. Composting Green waste is treated to produce compost. This compost can be used as a soil improver in farming or gardens.
Wakefield Metropolitan District Council (WMDC) VT is working with WMDC to provide a waste management solution that meets the needs of the Wakefield area. The PFI project between VT and WMDC ensures the council achieves its waste strategy targets of diversion and recycling. It began in 2010 and subject to financial close, the construction and commissioning will be completed in early 2012. The plant will process 200,000 tonnes of municipal waste every year.
