WAITLIST POLICY
Members are waitlisted for a class or camp that has reached maximum enrollment. They receive enrollment priority based on the order in which they are waitlisted for the class. Members are notified via email if a spot has opened, and they now are enrolled. Updates to registration status also can be viewed online at themac.com
In an effort to eliminate confusion for members about the availability of club services and facilities when severe weather is forecasted, the general manager shall determine club hours and service based on availability of staff and severity of weather as reported by the National Weather Service.
Club closure, delayed opening, or opening with limited services is announced to members at least four hours in advance, or 9 p.m. for the following day. Weather alerts are posted on themac.com homepage and at all entrances as soon as they are announced. When Portland Public Schools announces closure, early dismissal, or delayed opening due to weather, MAC Child Care, Playschool, and youth classes are canceled or delayed. Coaches determine if a specific sport team practice is canceled and use Team Snap or Team Unify to notify the team directly.
If a class or camp is canceled due to weather, no make-up sessions will be provided. MAC is unable to offer make-up classes for missed sessions due to limited space and full class schedules. We appreciate your understanding as we work to provide a consistent experience for all participants.
All junior members and guests participating in classes are expected to follow Club Rules. Parents are responsible for their children’s behavior while participating in club activities. To view the entire agreement, which includes expectations and behavior-management techniques that are employed by MAC staff, visit themac.com
For program-specific class cancellations, please refer to individual program sections within this guide.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
strengthandconditioning@themac.com 503-517-7539 themac.com/group/pages/strength
The Introduction to Strength & Conditioning series is open to junior MAC members ages 11-13 years old (sixth-eighth graders). Expect your young athlete to learn the basics of strength and conditioning. Participants work on developing general fitness by increasing basic strength, endurance, and speed, as well as movement skills such as hopping, skipping, jumping, and bounding.
The High School Strength & Conditioning series is open to junior members ages 1418 who are interested in building their power and fitness by learning how to safely and effectively execute basic barbell lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press), as well as improving their speed and acceleration for athletic performance. The primary focus of this training is to review and practice four basic strength movement patterns — squat, hinge, push, and pull — therefore increasing each participant’s basic physical literacy and “workout IQ.” Junior members can expect to gain confidence, knowledge, strength, and quickness in the weight room and on the field/court, setting them up for success as lifelong athletes and/or fitness enthusiasts.
Both the Beginner and Intermediate Adult Strength & Conditioning series are open to adults and focus on the big three lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press). This series gives members who usually take group exercise classes more variety and another option for training. The focus is learning and honing the barbell lifts, but also utilizing the weight room to give members an introduction to a new space, equipment, and exercises that they may not know. Adult members are exposed to exercises designed to improve strength and power and reduce the likelihood of injuries.
The Masters Strength & Conditioning series is for any individual 55 years or older who is just starting their fitness journey or any masters athletes who considers themselves fitness enthusiasts. Members from all sports and backgrounds are invited to join this series, which is designed to improve strength, balance, stability, and coordination while introducing basic barbell, kettlebell, and dumbbell exercises.
Athletic is MAC’s middle name. Take stock of the club’s huge range of offerings and explore competition, development, and fun from pools to courts, gyms to studios, and beyond!

Lynn McCaffrey – Gymnastics & Dance Supervisor lmccaffrey@themac.com | 503-517-7516 themac.com/group/pages/gymnastics
MAC Gymnastics offers recreational classes for 18-months to adults. Through the club’s safe, fun, and progressive classes, gymnasts develop and continually improve their strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and self-esteem. Instruction takes place throughout the entire Gymnastics Arena. Participants work out on the bars, beam, floor, vault, trampoline, and foam-filled pit! There are USA Gymnastics competitive teams for both boys and girls, levels 3 through 10, and Xcel. Tryouts for competitive teams are in May.
If you are new to the club and not sure in which level your child should enroll, email Lynn McCaffrey to set up a time for an evaluation.
Please note: MAC Gymnastics does not offer make-up lessons for any missed classes. There are no classes after 3 p.m. on Halloween, Oct. 31, and Nov. 24-30.
! REQUIRED READING
GYMNASTICS ATTIRE
A leotard with or without shorts; a unitard (leotard with shorts built in); or a T-shirt tucked into shorts is required. Jeans and dresses are not allowed, and everyone goes barefoot. No jewelry is allowed except stud earrings, and hair MUST be pulled up and away from the face with clips and ponytail binders.
MOVING UP LEVELS
Students do not move up levels based on their age; they are advanced into the next level because their skill level warrants it. If and when a child is ready to move up, the instructor will reach out to the parent.
GYMNASTICS — PARENT & TOT (AGES 1.5-3)
Parents and tots participate together. Classes start with a movement song, and then attendees warm up with stretching and body positions. Participants rotate weekly through different obstacle courses that incorporate strength, swinging, jumping, and balancing. A parent/adult interacts one-on-one with their child as the teacher guides everyone through activities. Adults wear socks or go barefoot during this class. This is not a free-play class. Capacity: 10

Intramurals are the cornerstone of MAC’s Racquetball program. The season starts in fall, and there are three sessions: fall intramurals run September through November, the winter session is January through March, and spring lasts from March through May. Participants automatically are drafted from the previous season unless they opt out by notifying the Racquetball commissioner. A draft party helps the commissioner place more than 100 participants onto one of more than 10 teams. Please email racquetball@themac.com to sign up!

MAC Tennis offers classes and lessons for all ages. Members improve their stroke, develop new point strategies, and get a great workout. Children are introduced to the game and given an opportunity to develop enthusiasm and basic skills. MAC Tennis coaches reserve the right to place participants in the proper class. For drop-ins, contact the coach. The drop-in fee is $20 per hour.
For safety reasons, all players must come to class with proper tennis shoes. Flip-flops, Crocs, boots, and dress shoes are not allowed on the tennis courts. In addition, players are encouraged to wear comfortable athletic clothing.
Tennis staff note: Please do not pressure your child to move up too quickly. Tennis is not a race to the yellow ball and full-size court; it is a race to rally. By developing skills to rally with peers and engraining technique, players can have years of fun on the court. There are no classes Nov. 23-30.
Players are introduced to the proper grips, preparation, and swing shapes. A variety of games and activities are used to develop hand-eye coordination and movement. Participants acquire the necessary skills for consistency and directional control as they learn to rally. The 36-foot court is used for this class. Capacity: 12

Competition for MAC Tennis classes is at an all-time high. For the benefit of all classes and to help ensure players are at a suitable level for each class, registration is limited to a player’s NTRP rating. Players with no NTRP rating are not eligible for 3.5 or higher-level classes. To acquire an NTRP rating, please visit the USTA League page at tennislink.usta.com/leagues/common/Default.aspx Registering out of level causes a player to be withdrawn from the class without notice. Please note, this policy is strictly followed. Below-level players only get into higher-level classes if there are no at-level players waiting and with a coach’s permission.
• NTRP 2.0: Player is a beginner to the game of tennis. Grip and stroke production knowledge is very limited, as are basic strategies for competition.
• NTRP 2.5: Player has taken some lessons but needs on-court experience and has obvious stroke weakness but is developing in singles and doubles.
• NTRP 3.0: Player can place shots with moderate success and sustain a rally at a slow pace but lacks control when trying for power.
• NTRP 3.5: Player has achieved stroke dependability and direction on shots within reach, including forehand and backhand volleys, but still lacks depth and variety, seldom double faults, and occasionally forces errors on the serve.
All Tennis instructors are subject to change without notice. Refunds are not issued if an instructor change occurs.

– FRIDAY
Kick off your weekend with Friday Night Bump – a lively tennis event that blends fun competition with a social atmosphere. This multi-court game keeps players moving, mixing, and battling their way to the top court. In Bump, players compete in fast-paced doubles matches, rotating partners throughout the night. Win three as a champion and move up a court – or if you’re the challenger, win two in a row to take the top spot on your court. Just don’t end up on the dreaded “dungeon” court! Individual singles players may participate if there is an odd number of players.
Bonus: At 75% capacity, players are able to enjoy a no-host bar with complimentary beer from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Capacity: 18
