Dad was born in Birmingham, England in September 1932 to parents that were told not to bother naming him just yet as he probably wouldn’t survive beyond two weeks.

Well, he certainly proved them wrong by living a very full life to the age of 90 years young.

He left school at age 14 to become a Toolmaker with Wrights Ropes, then for Lucas and then moved on to The Rover Company and was present when the first original Land Rover was built and tested.

Once Dad became old enough, he joined the British Army in the (REME) Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

He was posted overseas to Malaya and then Honiton in England on his return where he met Mum in 1958. They married in July 1959 and were moved around the countryside during which time Caron and I were born.

During his time he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and his fondest memories of the Army were his time as a Drill Sergeant where he trained recruits and shouted orders at them on the parade ground. He certainly loved the sound of his own voice!!

Often discipline came by way of what was known as The Sergeants Stare.

While we were growing up, Dad never raised his hand to us, because he didn’t have to…….that Sergeants Stare was more than enough to keep us in line.

He had a short posting to British Guiana, and then on his return he left the Army after 16 years of service, and Mum and Dad went into business, buying in to a Reptile and Tropical Fish Shop. This was when they were first introduced to Helen who had just married Dad’s best mate, Tom. They became great friends and the families spent lots of time together.

They built the business up for 6 years until deciding to make the move to Australia.

Arriving here, we moved up to Newman in the Northwest where he made a new life for us all.

He started off in the Geology Department, and then moved on to become a Blast Hole Driller and then a Security Officer. After 15 years up north, he and Mum made the move to live up in the hills around Perth.

Dad worked for Ridge Construction, and he mainly produced the Z Foot Rest and helped install custom kitchens.

In 1990, they moved to Corrigin and had their house built in Janes Drive. Dads workshop was definitely his solace where he taught himself picture framing and wood turning among other things. He was often called on by Corrigin locals to either repair or create wooden items of all sorts. He was definitely a master of improvisation. If he couldn’t get it, he’d make it. Many houses in Corrigin will have pictures or paintings or footy jumpers in one of his frames hanging on their walls. His frames were unique in that he didn’t buy mouldings, he brought

rough sawn planks and made the moulding from scratch. He enjoyed wood turning too and was extremely good at it but his favourite description of his work was – “That Old Rubbish”. I would describe his ability to create absolutely beautiful pieces of art from a lump of firewood as being a master craftsman.

Sometime after Mum passed away, Dad decided to try and reconnect with Tom and Helen but unfortunately Tom had passed away, Dad and Helen then began chatting and they amazingly spent the next four years deeply in love and travelling backwards and forwards between France, England and Australia.

Covid caught them out extending a five-week trip to France in to a 2 years and 8 month stay in the UK. They finally got back to Australia in October last year.

Dad has fought Cancer on and off for the past 18 years, but the body can only take so much and eventually it caught up with him.

He passed away peacefully at 7.00pm on the 20th January with Helen, Caron, Annie and myself by his side.

Dad turned out to be one of those parents who was so much more than just that, he became our friend, our confidant, an excellent teacher, an all-round top bloke and one of the worlds true gentlemen.

We would like to thank everyone who attended dads service, and the commiserations from those who couldn’t attend. We would also like to thank everyone for their support, cards and kindness.

Corrigin Agriculture 100th Show To celebrate 100 years of cookery, jams and preserves with a recipe book. I am reaching out to the community for recipes relating to the Corrigin Show from 3rd October 1923 until 9th September 2023. Have been researching past schedules and found 42 recipes from 1963, however there are some years missing especially 2015 for the schedule recipe.

I would like to find a Ganache recipe for the 1998 Miss Maud Chocolate Mud Cake also the 2001 Cream Cheese frosting for the Hummingbird Cake, these were only available on request.

Harpers Empire Self Raising Flour Cakes and Scones recipes as well as Aunt Mary’s Baking Powder Scone recipes. As these go back to 1920’s, could be a long shot!

Grain Brokers Australia Weekly Market Report January 31, 2023 Warm spell leaves European winter crops exposed…

Unseasonably warm weather across large swathes of Europe in late December and through most of January has reduced snow cover and roused European grain crops from their winter dormancy, leaving them highly susceptible to any sudden and extreme drop in temperatures.

Most of Europe saw relatively cold weather in the first 18 days of December, but this was quickly followed by an unexpected transition to much warmer weather, with some parts of the continent registering temperature records over the New Year period.

In the central German state of Saxony-Anhalt, temperatures went from minus 20 degrees Celsius to plus 17 degrees Celsius in the space of two weeks. Farmers fear the sudden and prolonged warm spell will trick the crops into thinking that spring has arrived and they will start to grow accordingly. Those crops will be extremely vulnerable to frost damage and winter kill when the cold weather returns.

The cold tolerance, or hardening, of winter wheat and barley varieties builds up gradually after crop emergence.

As the temperatures decrease with the seasonal transition to winter, the low-temperature resilience of the plant increases. Tolerance to below-freezing conditions is pivotal to plant survival over the extreme European winter months. If the winter is warm, the farmer will be poor, according to an ancient German proverb.

Winter hardiness is a complex trait that is strongly influenced by many environmental factors such as temperature, snow cover, soil fertility, soil heaving or ice encasement, and biotic factors like disease pressure or insect damage.

The ability to withstand prolonged exposure to low temperatures can vary substantially between varieties and is associated with their particular vernalisation requirement.

An unwanted consequence of Europe’s recent shift to well above-average temperatures is a process referred to as de-hardening. The cold tolerance previously accumulated by the plant is lost, leaving the crops susceptible to frost damage and winterkill in subsequent cold spells. Furthermore, alternating freeze/thaw phases can harm the plant, reducing plant vigour, making them more vulnerable to later cold snaps and potentially slowing growth once the plant emerges from dormancy in the spring. This, in turn, can reduce the yield of affected plants.

The only regions of Europe spared the warmer-than-usual temperatures were parts of Norway and Sweden and the eastern reaches of European Russia. The good news is temperatures have begun to decrease slowly and there has been very little frost damage recorded thus far, save for a cold snap in Russia’s Volga region in the second week of January which is expected to have rendered some damage, more so due to lack of snow cover.

The warmer temperatures have been accompanied by lower rainfall, increasing moisture deficits across more than 70 per cent of the continent’s farming regions. Precipitation is running at less than half the long-term average in the Mediterranean regions of Spain, southern parts of Italy, parts of Greece, much of Bulgaria, the majority of Turkey – more than 20 per cent of which is in drought - and the southernmost districts of European Russia.

The wetter-than-usual area is much smaller and comprises a strip from the Netherlands, through northern Germany and into the Scandinavian farming regions. There is also a band that extends from Slovenia through Slovakia, south-eastern Poland, Belarus, the Baltic states and into the central parts of European Russia. Portugal and parts of central Spain have also seen above-average rainfall in recent months.

Weather models suggest that temperatures across most of Europe will remain above average in February before slowly moving closer to normal conditions in March and April, especially for much of the Iberian Peninsula, the North European Plain, and the southern parts of Scandinavia. European rainfall registrations are forecast to return to average values in most of Europe in February, March and April, with a possibility of exceeding median values in Italy and the western Balkans in March.

Lack of precipitation is a big concern for European farmers coming off a season of extremely low rainfall and depleted subsoil moisture reserves. The lack of snow cover raises anxiety levels as the majority of the continent’s winter cropping, and spring cropping for that matter, rely heavily on water supplied by snowmelt to initiate the spring growth burst.

Snow is very good at protecting and irrigating farmland. It provides insulation against weather extremes and melts gradually, so water is slowly absorbed over an extended period. Heavy rain, by contrast, can often end up running off the crops and into the river system, especially when it falls on parched soils which are less able to absorb water.

According to FranceAgriMer almost all of the French winter cropping area was in good condition going into winter.

Good autumn rainfall helped the planting program and partly replenished the soil moisture reserves. And the area planted to winter wheat, winter barley and rapeseed has reportedly increased in response to higher prices.

Late autumn crop conditions in Germany were similar following a relatively uneventful planting period.

Nonetheless, the recent warm spell has left most fields with no protective cover, and farmers are extremely concerned should a cold snap hit before a blanket of snow can be re-established. Winter wheat plantings are reported to be 1.9 per cent lower year-on-year, but the rapeseed area has ballooned by 7.6 per cent.

While it is far too early to ring alarm bells, the crop does remain susceptible in the absence of adequate soil moisture and a snow layer to shield the crop. Damage to date has been minimal, and a gradual temperature decrease will allow the plant to rebuild some hardiness. Nevertheless, the most feared scenario is a repeat of the 2011/12 season, when a cold snap in February extensively damaged French crops and slashed grain production.

These men and their families worked on the railways and for the water department in the 1950s & 60s.

BOWLS NOTES Bowlers have been kept busy throughout January, with many events to keep those keen ones happy. Three championships have been played with the following results.

Singles: Steven (Horse) Sloan is the singles champion for the ninth time, defeating Mark Szczecinski in an evenly contested final.

Mixed Pairs: This was played over 2 afternoons due to the pleasing number of entries.

Winners: G Humphries and S Jacobs, who defeated E Jespersen and N Forbes, in windy, tricky conditions.

Mixed Fours: This was played in near perfect conditions, with one particular bowler playing almost perfect bowls!

Learning to Paint.

It makes me feel sad that So many people say “I can’t paint, I haven’t drawn anything since I was in kindergarten”. Painting isn’t easy but luckily in Corrigin we have a great Art Club and some very talented people who will help. I have watched the progress of the After Dark Painters and there is so much improvement in their work after just a year at 2 hours a week.

Congratulations to the “The Mummies” who are now starting classes this year.

A very diverse range of subjects and styles were on view and although none of the art was for sale during the show, I am happy to report that several pieces sold after the exhibition.

Training For 2023 Get together on the following dates: 9th February 9.30am start plus morning tea 23rd February 9.30am start plus morning tea. AT MORNING TEA THE AGM WILL BE HELD AND THE TEAMS WILL BE SORTED OUT FOR SENIORS GAMESAT MERREDIN ON THE 28thMARCH 2023. SUBS ARE DUE BY THEN AT $30 PER HEAD. 9th March 9.30 start plus morning tea 16th March 9.30 start plus morning tea 23rd March 9.30 start plus morning tea Anyone who is interested to come along on any of the above dates please let Stan or Josie know.
