Any parent knows there’s no manual to the toughest and most rewarding job in the world and sleep is a really complex issue.

You’re certainly not alone and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

If you find yourself staying away from home this Christmas with your child then take a look at my top tips for travelling with baby: 1. Don’t over schedule yourself – late nights will only make sleep harder for your overtired child. Stick to routines and bedtime as much as possible.

2. Make sure you bring your child’s sleeping toy/blanket and their unwashed sheets from home so that the smell is familiar.

3. Don’t share a bed with your child even for a few nights, you could find yourself having to teach them to sleep independently all over again when you get home.

4. If a separate room is unavailable then try to make some sort of private space for your baby to sleep, anywhere that you can build a partition so that if she has a night waking she is not excited to see you and thinking its playtime!

5. It is very normal for children to test the boundaries around sleep when they are somewhere new, this may mean that your baby cries for some time at bedtime or has a night waking or two. The best way to deal with this is not to do much different than if you were at home, go in and offer a little reassurance every 5 minutes or so, but other than that don’t bend - even to the pressure of your well meaning in-laws standing outside the door repeatedly asking if you’re sure the baby is ok!

Winchester’s Christmas Market & Ice Rink 10 Years On! 2015 marks the tenth year of Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market and Ice Rink. From relatively modest beginnings, these major events now attract over 350,000 visitors a year and have achieved a reputation as being amongst the very best in Europe.

The Christmas Market started in 2006 with just 40 stalls and now boasts over 100 pretty chalets brimming with gifts, decorations and festive foods. There’s an area dedicated to British crafts and a food court offering a range of mouthwatering treats to enjoy on the spot or take home.

The Ice Rink is situated in the heart of the Christmas Market and with the Cathedral providing a stunning backdrop. It really is the perfect winter playground for adults and children alike. Special Tiny Tots sessions are available for children as young as 2 to enjoy the rink. For times and ticket prices please see the Cathedral website.

Winchester Bonfire & Fireworks 7th November, 6pm The 57th Bonfire, Fireworks spectacular and procession is a sight to behold as over 20,000 people gather to celebrate the failed plot of Guy Fawkes. Every year there is a torchlit procession through the streets of Winchester, which ends at River Park Leisure Centre where the bonfire is lit by the Mayor of Winchester. The firework display takes place around 7.45pm.

Apple Pie Smoothie!

Some days you just want a homely, cosy, snuggly kind of breakfast.

Porridge can be a bit heavy for little ones, but this Apple Pie inspired smoothie means you can pack in the healthy oats and fibre, whilst making it easy-peasy for them to drink!

Ingredients • 3 Cooking apples • 30g Breakfast oats • 100g Natural yoghurt • 100ml Almond milk • Honey (to taste) • Handful of ice • Sprinkle of ground cinnamon You will also need a blender, baking dish and bowl.

Method • Pre-heat the oven to 180oC (Gas 5) • Core and chop the apples. Leave the skins on as these are the most nutritious bit and will disappear as they get blended anyway.

• Put the apples on a baking tray with a splash of water and place in the oven.

• Meanwhile, pop your oats in the milk to soak and soften.

• When the apples are soft (after approx. 20-30 minutes), remove them from the oven and leave to cool (you could even do this the night before to save time).

• Put the cooled apples, oat and milk mixture, yoghurt and ice in a blender and blitz until smooth.

• Add honey and cinnamon to taste and blend again to incorporate the sweetness.

• Serve in a cool glass with a big fat straw and watch the kids enjoy a tasty, healthy Apple Pie in a glass!
